Obituaries for the week of December 3, 2000 Sunday, December 3, 2000 Pauline Herford Pauline Helen Herford, 47, of Elkton went to meet her Lord at 10:45 p.m. Thursday evening, Nov. 30, 2000, at her home. She was born May 15, 1953, in Bad Axe, the daughter and fifth child of John and the late Helen (Weltin) Maurer. She was united in marriage to William Welland Herford on Nov. 13, 1976, at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Smith Corners. Surviving are her immediate family members, who have always been by her side: her loving husband, William; two wonderful sons, Adam, a senior at Michigan State University, and Luke, at home; a beautiful daughter, Beth, also at home; her dedicated father, John Maurer and his wife, Joan; eight supportive and caring brothers, Benedict Maurer, Joseph Maurer, Stephen Maurer and his wife, Carlin, all of Ubly; Marcus Maurer of Homer, James Maurer and his wife, Jeannie, of Ruth, John Maurer and his wife, Diane, of Plymouth, Glen Maurer and his wife, Melissa, of Chesterfield, and Gary Maurer of Grand Rapids; seven caring and supportive sisters, Janice Shemka of Essexville, Marian Holdwick and her husband, Gene, of Harbor Beach, Theresa Mazure and her husband, Mike, of Port Austin, Lucille Recker and her husband, Gus, of Ubly, Ann Maurer of Waterford, Carol Maurer of Farmington Hills and Margaret Maurer of Kalamazoo. She was preceded in death by her mother, Helen Maurer, on Aug. 6, 1986. Pauline was a devoted member of St. Felix Catholic Church, Pinnebog, where a Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 4, 2000, with burial in Riverside Cemetery, Elkton. A parish scripture service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Sunday evening at the Champagne Funeral Chapel, Elkton. Visitation will be 2 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home, and after 10 a.m. Monday at the church. Memorials may be given to St. Felix Catholic Church, Michigan 4-H Foundation or the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. Charles Haun Charles Theodore Haun, 93, of Detroit died Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, at Hills and Dales General Hospital, Cass City. A memorial Mass service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at Guardian Angel Church, Detroit with the Rev. Luis Resma officiating. Interment of cremains will take place in the spring at St. Agatha Cemetery in Gagetown. Arrangements are being handled by Kranz Funeral Home in Cass City. Paul Prutchick Paul Micheal Prutchick, 53, of Pigeon passed away Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe, following a long illness. He was born in Pigeon on Jan. 17, 1947, the son of the late Micheal W. and Mary Katherine (Karle) Prutchick. On Nov. 2, 1968, he was united in marriage to Deanne Diller at the Caseville United Methodist Church. She survives him. Following his 1965 graduation from Laker High School, he served with the U.S. Army in Korea from 1966-1968. Mr. Prutchick was a member of the Caseville United Methodist Church. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing, as well as trap and skeet shooting. He was a member of the Caseville Rod and Gun Club, and a lifetime member of the Pigeon Veterans of Foreign Wars. He is survived by his wife, Deanne; two sisters, Mary Ann Henne and her husband, Kent, of Pigeon and Frances Scepanski and her husband, Jack, of Homosassa, Fla.; several nieces and nephews; his brother-in-law and care giver, Bill Diller; a cousin whom he loved and admired as a daughter, Sherrie Phillips and her husband, Bill, and her three children whom he loved as grandchildren, Dee Dee, Ray and Makayla. Cremation will take place. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 4, 2000, at the Caseville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Michael Quayle, pastor, officiating. Monday, December 4, 2000 Earl Kasserman Earl Norman Kasserman, 86, retired Oliver Township farmer, died Saturday evening, Dec. 2, 2000, at Tendercare, Cass City. He was born Aug. 24, 1914, in the home where he lived all his life. His parents were the late Andrew and Anna (Reibling) Kasserman. On Feb. 6, 1944, he was united in marriage to Mayme M. Bendrey at the Kinde Presbyterian Church. She preceded him in death on Dec. 18, 1994. Earl was a crop and dairy farmer in Oliver Township all his life, retiring in 1987. He was a long-time delegate and member of the Michigan Milk Producers Association. He also was a member of the Elkton United Methodist Church, Elkton Senior Citizens Club and the Just A Mere Farm Bureau Group. Surviving are two sons, Kenneth Kasserman and his wife, Shirley, and Keith Kasserman and his wife, Yvette, both of Oliver Township; his daughter, Joyce Reiley and her husband, Pat, of rural Kinde; eight grandchildren, Jill, Karen, Carrie, Julee, Brian, David, Kelly and Sarah; three great-grandchildren, Amber, Brandon and Chandler; a very special niece, Jean Kasserman; and nephew, Vernon Kasserman. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, at the Elkton United Methodist Church. The Rev. Pete Crawford, pastor, will officiate with burial in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Champagne Funeral Chapel, Elkton, and after 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Memorials may be given to the church. John Shine, Jr. John Shine, Jr., 72, of Hume Township died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, at Huron Memorial Hospital in Bad Axe. He was born on May 7, 1928, in Bad Axe, son of the late John and Theresa (Bubar) Shine. John was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin. He worked for Clancy Brothers Excavating in Port Austin and raised beef cattle on his Hume Township farm. He is survived by his brother, Father Robert W. Shine of St. Charles; several nieces and nephews, Marilyn and Ron Lamke of Bad Axe, Dan and Vanda Yaroch of Midland, Cindy and John Champagne of Bad Axe, Rick and Sharon Yaroch of Sanford, Shelly and Steve Lipford of Waterford, Susie and Mike Majznerski of Essexville, Sherry and Bob Thompson of Port Huron, Tim and Patty Shine of St. Clair, Jerry and Kelly Cristick of Royal Palm Beach, Fla., Sue and Jim Westrick of Wellington, Fla., Gerry and Patty Harrison of Marysville, and Kathy and Steve Weingartz of Marysville; and 24 great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, James Shine; two sisters, Kathleen Yaroch and Marilyn Shine; one sister-in-law, Marilyn Shine; and one brother-in-law, Anthony Yaroch. A funeral mass will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin. The Rev. Robert Shine will officiate. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Church Cemetery in Bad Axe. There will be a parish scripture service at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Knoblock Funeral Home in Kinde. Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. this evening and from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, and from 12:30 p.m. until the time of services Wednesday at the church. David Whitenack, Sr. David Boyd "Boss" Whitenack, Sr., 62, of Port Austin died Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor after a short illness. He was born July 15, 1938, in West Virginia, son of the late Grover Boyd Whitenack, Sr., and Hortense (Corey) Whitenack. He served in the U.S. Army for two years. He was united in marriage to Alice Goretski on Oct. 22, 1966, in Port Austin. He worked as an operating engineer at Sub-Surface of Grand Rapids and Anchor Pipeline, Local No. 324, for 30 years. David is survived by his wife, Alice; two daughters, Jo-K Wilkos and her husband, Michael, of Flushing and Cheryl Ratajczak and her special friend, Matthew, of Grand Blanc; two sons, David Whitenack, Jr., and his special friend, Rose, of Port Austin, and Richard Borgquist and his wife, Cindy, of Kinde; six grandchildren, Kristy, John David, Ryan, David Patrick, Katie and Jacob; three great-grandchildren, Bruce, Chelsey and Avery; six sisters, Wilma Parks and her husband, Ivan, of Parrotsville, Tenn., Frances Williams and her husband, Bud, of Jefferson, Ohio, Mary Miller and her husband, Lonnie, of Pinnacle, N.C., Sarah Herman and her husband, Norman, of Jefferson, Ohio, Patricia Bartrow of Amelia, Ohio, and Sharon Smallwood and her husband, Bruce, of Geneva, Ohio; three brothers, Grover Whitenack, Jr., and his wife, Marcie, of Clyde, James Whitenack and his wife, Diane, of Port Austin, and Jerry Whitenack of Ashtubula, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. David was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother-in-law, Larry Bartrow. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin, with Fr. Michael Bell officiating. In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association, the American Heart Association, or the Gift of Life. Wednesday, December 6, 2000 Marian Elenbaum Marian Ann "Mimi" Elenbaum, 72, of Sebewaing passed away Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, at her son's home in West Branch. She was born in Pigeon on Nov. 13, 1928, the daughter of the late Carl F. and Martha F. (Hafner) Stein. She graduated from Pigeon High School in 1947. On Dec. 31, 1955, she was united in marriage to Robert A. Elenbaum at the Kilmanagh Methodist Church. He preceded her in death on Sept. 22, 1979. Mrs. Elenbaum was actively involved with home crafts, making porcelain dolls, as well as more than 70 custom Santa Claus figures. She also enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing and cake decorating. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Linkville. Her survivors include a son, Terry Elenbaum and his wife, Omma, of West Branch; two grandchildren, Chad Robert and Amy Lynn; three step-grandchildren, David Moore, Karen Sines and Darla Kritzman; two sisters, Barbara Smith of Harbor Beach and Linda Koerner and her husband, William, of San Antonio, Texas; three brothers, R. B. Stein and his wife, Marian, of Birch Run, Loren Stein and his wife, Lola, of Pigeon and Ronald Stein and his wife, Betty Sue, of Lake, Miss.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two infant sisters, Marilyn and Myra; and two brothers, Gerald and Kenneth. Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, at the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home, Pigeon, with the Rev. Lee C. Wenskay, pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Linkville, officiating. Burial was in Grand Lawn Cemetery, Winsor Township. Memorials may be made to Children's Lutheran Home. Darryel Ellington Darryel (Duke) Ellington, 66, of Port Hope died Monday, Dec. 4, 2000, at Harbor Beach Community Hospital. Mr. Ellington was born Aug. 23, 1934, in Paragould, Ark., the son of Ford and Jean Ellington. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Port Hope and the Grindstone Sportsman's Club. Duke served in the California National Guard. He retired from Buick where he worked in skilled trades and was a member of United Auto Workers Local 599. Duke married Betty Roy in June 1976. He is survived by his wife; children Dennis Ellington, Timmy Ellington, Pam Greenley, Jeff Ellington, Cathy Cleaver and her husband, Don, David Ralph and his wife, Gayla, Cindy Ladd and her husband, David, and John Ralph and his wife, Shelly; many wonderful grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a sister, Doris Brown and her husband, Burl, of California; son-in-law Norbert Wallock; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Ellington was preceded in death by his daughter, Debbie Wallock. Funeral services will take place at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 8, 2000, at Reigle Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel, 5501 W. Pierson Road in Flushing, with Pastor Gilbert Mabry officiating. Burial will be at Flint Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. this evening and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to St. John Lutheran Church in Port Hope. Lillian Ellis Lillian J. "Bea" Ellis, 82, of Lake Placid, Fla., formerly of Pigeon, passed away Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, at Florida Hospital in Wauchula. She was born on Jan. 6, 1918, in Detroit, the daughter of the late Rush and Alice (Schnekenburger) Foster. On Oct. 11, 1940, she was united in marriage to Alton MacKenzie in New Hudson. He preceded her in death on June 13, 1983. She was married to Charles J. Ellis at Bradenton, Fla., in March 1984. He survives her. She had been employed as a secretary for DeSoto Motors in Detroit and at Alton Industries in Pigeon. Mrs. Ellis was a resident of Lake Placid for 16 years where she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She also was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was past Worthy Matron, Order of Eastern Star, Pigeon Chapter. Besides her husband, Charles, she is survived by a daughter, Janet Ballagh and her husband, William, of New Lothrop; three grandchildren, William Ballagh and his wife, Annette, of Stockbridge, Andrew Ballagh and his wife, Amber, of Las Vegas, N.V., and Lisa Clothier and her husband, Corey, of Whitmore Lake; and six great- grandchildren, Amanda, William A. and Daniel C. Ballagh and Kelli, Katie and Cole Clothier. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 8, 2000, at the First United Methodist Church, Pigeon, with the Rev. Karen L. Knight, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Detroit. Visitation will be 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home, a Golden Rule Funeral Home, Pigeon, and from 9 a.m. until the time of services Friday at the church. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Lake Placid, Fla., the First United Methodist Church, Pigeon, or the American Cancer Society. H. Maureen Pitcher H. Maureen Pitcher, 58, of Souletown in Chandler Township died Saturday evening, Dec. 2, 2000, at her home from multiple health problems. Surviving are her son, David; and a brother, Edward. A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8, 2000, at the Bad Axe Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Arrangements are being handled by Champagne Funeral Chapel, Elkton. Friday, December 8, 2000 Anthony Bloomfield Anthony "Tony" L. Bloomfield, 31, of Gagetown died suddenly Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, in Hills and Dales General Hospital, Cass City. He was born June 24, 1969, in Caro to Larry and Bonnie (Kaatz) Bloomfield. Tony previously worked for Acme in Sebewaing and currently worked for his mother delivering the Saginaw News throughout the west side of the Thumb. He truly enjoyed fishing. Anthony is survived by his daughter, Casandra Hope Bloomfield of Cass City; a second child due in eight months; his parents, Larry and Bonnie Bloomfield of Cass City; his fiancee, Michelle Dutcher of Gagetown; brothers Randall Putnam of Manistique and Larry Bloomfield, Jr., of Marlette; nieces Rebecca and Rachel Putnam of Cass City; a nephew, Shane Bloomfield of Deford; and his grandmother, Delphia Bloomfield of Sebewaing. He was preceded in death by his brother, Jerry Lynn Putnam, who died July 29, 1992; and his grandparents, John B. Bloomfield and Anna and Hugo Kaatz. Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at Kranz Funeral Home, Cass City, with the Rev. Eric Holmgren of Cass City First Baptist Church officiating. Interment will be in Almer Township Cemetery, Caro. Visitation will be 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Family Discretionary Fund. George McIlhargie George P. McIlhargie, 51, of Flint died at his residence on Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000. He was born Feb. 2, 1949, in Bad Axe and was a resident of Flint since 1967, coming from Kinde. He married Beverly Smith on June 3, 1972. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era. He was a member of the VFW Post No. 4139 and the International Union of Operating Engineers Local No. 324. Mr. McIlhargie enjoyed pool and singing karaoke. He loved life and making people laugh and will be sadly missed. Mr. McIlhargie was employed as an operating engineer for 32 years. Surviving are two sons, Brian and James of Flint; a daughter, Nichole McIlhargie of Flint; his mother, Betty Fisher of Kinde; brothers Eugene, David, Steven, Mark and Edward; sisters Sandy, Susan, Ann and Margaret; many nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Janet Winslow. He was preceded in death by his father, John; two brothers, James and Charles; and nephews Todd and Adam. Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, at Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road in Flint. The Rev. Ernest Davis will officiate. The service will be followed by a military service under the auspices of the VFW Post No. 3087 Honor Guard. Cremation will take place following the service. Visitation will be 6 to 9 p.m. this evening and 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Disabled American Veterans. 1
