HURON DAILY TRIBUNE, Bad Axe, Michigan Local Obituaries Week of August 6, 2000 Katherine DeChane Katherine Direlle DeChane, 62, of Bad Axe died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, at St. Mary's Hospital, Saginaw. She was born Nov. 30, 1937, in Phoenix, Ariz. She was the daughter of the late Lee and Ruth (Hartenbower) Drake. She graduated from high school in Phoenix and later attended college in Long Beach, Calif., for bookkeeping. Miss Katherine Drake and Mr. Harold DeChane were married on July 27, 1957, in Phoenix. He preceded her in death on Aug. 10, 1991. She was employed with Huron Behavioral Health in Bad Axe as support staff. Prior to that she worked at Business Service, Long Beach. Katherine liked doing crafts, playing bingo, bowling, volunteering at Camp Fowler and the Special Olympics through Thumb Industries. Surviving are her daughter, Debbie Jurges and her husband, Tim, of Bad Axe; six grandchildren, Cory DeChane, Merritt Ligrow, James Ligrow, James Jurges, Kathylyn Jurges and Julia Jurges; seven brothers and sisters, Harold Wygal of Arkansas, Walter Wygal, Gordon Drake, Phillip Drake and Pat Eierman, all of Arizona, Dorothy McDonald of Michigan and Paul Drake of Texas; one sister-in-law, Evelyn Voss of Bad Axe; two brothers-in-law, Gerald DeChane and his wife, Ilene, of Bad Axe and Richard DeChane and his wife, Francis, of Eastpointe; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, at the MacAlpine Funeral Home, Bad Axe, with the Rev. Jerry Sutton, pastor of the Bad Axe Free Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will take place in Colfax Township Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 9 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. until the time of services at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Bad Axe Public Library or to the Bad Axe Free Methodist Church. James Malloy James Loran Malloy, 95, of Pigeon passed away Wednesday night, Aug. 9, 2000, at St. Gertrude Health Care Center near the home of his daughter in Shakopee, Minn. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m., Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, from the First United Methodist Church, Pigeon. Visitation will be 2:30 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Meyersieck- Bussema Funeral Home, a Golden Rule Funeral Home, Pigeon, and 9 to 10 a.m. Monday at the church. A full obituary will appear in Sunday's edition of the Huron Daily Tribune. Iva Woodruff Iva Irene Woodruff, 94, of Croswell died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, in Tendercare Nursing Facility, Cass City. Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, in Kranz Funeral Home, Cass City. Interment will be in Elk Township Cemetery, Peck. Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. tonight and 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association. John Stefanski John J. Stefanski, 83, of Elkton died Monday evening, Aug. 7, 2000, at his home following a four-month illness. He was born June 24, 1917, in Detroit to the late John and Wladyslawa (Marx) Stefanski and moved with them to Elkton in 1920. John farmed all his life in Oliver Township and was employed at the Elkton Co-op Farm Produce Co. for many years, retiring in 1985. He was a member of St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church, Pigeon. Surviving are his sister, Sophia Burzyck of Elkton; three nephews, Leo Burzyck and his wife, Lucy, of Armada, Ed Burzyck and his wife, LaDonna, of Clio and Marty Burzyck and his wife, Deb, of Elkton; two nieces, Barbara McIntosh of Elkton and Carolyn McKinnon and her husband, Robert, of Essexville; several great-nieces and nephews; and his very good friend, Junior (Albert) Volz of Pigeon. A funeral Mass was conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, at St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church, Pigeon, with burial in the church cemetery. Steve Boldiszar Steve Boldiszar, 94, of Owendale passed away Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, at the Huron Medical Care Facility, Bad Axe. He was born in South Bend, Ind., on July 7, 1906, the son of the late Michael and Rose (Albrecht) Boldiszar. During World War II, Mr. Boldiszar served with the 116th Infantry Division at Normandy Beach as well as in Paris. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post No. 2236, Pigeon. He is survived by a son, Raymond Boldizar and his wife, Elaine, of Glennie; three sisters, Rose Strobel of Taylor, Gizella Stein of Eastpointe and Anna Armstead Gettel of Harbor Beach; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Theresa Takis and Mary Piesack; and two brothers, Mickey Boldiszar and Joe Boldiszar. Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, at the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home, Pigeon, with Sr. Theresa Fox, O.P., parish administrator of St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church, Pigeon, officiating. Cremation will follow at Sunset Valley Crematory, Bay City. Visitation will be 3 p.m. until the time of services at 4 p.m. today at the funeral home. Richard "Dick" Buchholz Richard "Dick" Herman Buchholz, 57, of Bay Port passed away Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, as the result of an automobile accident near Bay Port. He was born in Bad Axe on Oct. 1, 1942, the son of William C. and Leona A. (Baur) Buchholz. He was raised on the family farm in Pigeon and graduated from Pigeon High School in 1960. Mr. Buchholz farmed throughout his lifetime and was employed with Agri-Sales in Elkton for the past three years. He enjoyed and actively participated in line dancing. He was a member of Northern Lights Dance Club and the East Coast Swingers. He was a lifelong member of Cross Lutheran Church in Pigeon where he was baptized and confirmed. His survivors include his children, Richard W. Buchholz of Pigeon, Anna-Leigh Buchholz and her special friend, Jason Strahan, of Bad Axe, Brian Witherspoon of Battle Creek and Wade Witherspoon of Pigeon; three grandsons; a sister, Barbara Dixon and her husband, Robert, of Ludington; a brother, Charles Buchholz and his wife, Jody, of Brighton; his father, William Buchholz and his wife, Margaret, of Pigeon; a sister-in-law, Nan Buchholz of California; his former wife, Sharon L. Collings of Bad Axe; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Leona; and a brother, Kent. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, at Cross Lutheran Church in Pigeon. The Rev. Raymond E. Orth, pastor, will officiate. Richard Furne Mr. Richard (Nick) Furne, 65, of Ruth and New Port Richey, Fla., died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, in New Port Richey after a short illness. He was born Nov. 8, 1934, in Battle Creek, son of the late Edward Earl Furne Sr. and the late Ida (Hansen) Furne Sr. He married Marjorie Fagan. She died Sept. 30, 1990. He was a graduate of Battle Creek High School. He is survived by Kendall Furne, Wesley Furne and his wife, Diane, and Craig Furne and his wife, Robin, all of Dennison, Iowa; three sisters, Marla Juhl and her husband, Virgil, of Elk Horn, Iowa, Leanna Jensen and her husband, Jerry, of Kimbalton, Iowa, and Carla Wianans and her husband, Larry, of Harlan, Iowa. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Andrew, Frederick and Willis Furne; and one sister, Frances Gute. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, at the Smigielski Funeral Home of Minden City. Sister Theresa Carlow, S.N.D., will officiate. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery of Palms. Visitation will be 12:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday and noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Ryan Hartwick Ryan W. Hartwick, 13, of Cass City died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, in Hills and Dales General Hospital, Cass City, as a result of injuries sustained in a four-wheel ATV accident. He was born Sept. 26, 1986, in Cass City to Richard E. and Donna (Francis) Hartwick. Ryan completed seventh grade at Cass City Middle School in June. He enjoyed playing football, baseball and basketball. He recently completed Alma College Basketball Camp. Ryan loved sports, especially basketball, which he practiced nearly every evening. He loved using his computer and spending time with his family and friends. Ryan is survived by his parents, Rick and Donna Hartwick; a sister, Heidi Hartwick, and a brother, Kyle Hartwick, both at home; grandparents, Elmer and Janet Francis of Cass City, Ray and Helen Waggoner of Vassar, and Elwyn and Toni Hartwick of Mayville; great-grandmother, Aleta Wills of Bad Axe; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Fred and Rachel Wright; and great-grandparents, Virginia and Clayton Hartwick, Ray and Susie Francis, and Elgin Wills. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, at Cass City United Methodist Church with Dr. Philip Rice, pastor, and Pastor David Edwards of Cass City Missionary Church officiating. Memorials may be made to the Family Discretionary Fund. Arnold Nimtz Arnold J. Nimtz, 82, of Sebewaing died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, in Bay Medical Center, Bay City. He was born May 16, 1918, in Bach to Albert C. and Theresa (Rueger) Nimtz. He married Ruth H. Weller on March 3, 1945, in Bach. Arnold served in the U.S. Army. He was a lifelong farmer and worked in the laboratory for Michigan Sugar Co. in Sebewaing for 40 years. Arnold was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, the American Legion Post No. 293 and was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed gardening, traveling, writing and listening to music. He was an avid Detroit Tigers baseball fan. Arnold was a devoted Christian and family man. He was a loving and caring father and grandpa. Arnold is survived by his wife, Ruth; children, Arlene R. Schweitzer and her husband, LeRoy, of Sebewaing, Gloria J. McKellar and her husband, Kerry, of Sebewaing, Mark A. Nimtz and his wife, Wendy, of Troy and JoAnn Nimtz Ross and her husband, David, of Essexville; grandchildren, LeAnn Treder and her husband, Mark, Arick Schweitzer and his wife, Stacie, Angela Schweitzer, Karissa G. McKellar, Travis D. McKellar, Dustin J. McKellar, Nathaniel M. Nimtz, Elizabeth E. Nimtz, Matthew M. Nimtz, David (D.J.) Ross and Lisa Jo Ross; and great-grandchildren, Cody Treder and Ethan Parsons. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Elfrieda Binder, Gertrude Nimtz and Dorothy Weippert; and brothers, Arthur and Clarence Nimtz. Memorials may be made to the church. Albert Tenbusch Albert (Bert) H. Tenbusch, 89, of Ruth died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, in Covenant Medical Center Cooper, Saginaw, after a short illness. He was born Nov. 25, 1910, in Huron County, son of the late Frances (Clor) and John Tenbusch. He married Anne Schmitz on Nov. 27, 1940, at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church of Ruth. He was a graduate of Pumpkin Center School. He was employed by Michigan Sugar Co. for 29 years. He participated in local government by serving on the Delaware Township Board of Review, Property Zoning Commission and Planning Board. Bert, in his younger days, spent five seasons sailing the Great Lakes and shared many fond memories of those bygone years. He was a lifelong parishioner of SS. Peter and Paul Parish, where he served as a member of the Parish Council and was a former Knights of Columbus member. He was an avid reader and ambitious farmer all his life. He enjoyed playing cards and loved to spend time with his grandchildren. Albert was a devoted husband and loving father. He is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Anne; five daughters, Diane Godi and her husband, Frank, of Frankenmuth, Judy Matuszewski and her husband, Arthur, of Frankenmuth, Alicia Mazure and her husband, Richard, of Ubly, Peggy Randall and her husband, Harold, of Caro and Sally Bellsky and her husband, Chuck, of Frankenmuth; two sons, Joseph Tenbusch of Hale and James Tenbusch and his wife, Gretchen, of Bad Axe; 20 grandchildren, Mary Birks, Christopher Godi, Michael and Cheryl Matuszewski, Karen Weber, Kevin and Paul Mazure, Becky Goodheart, Jason, Cavitt, Matthew and Jordan Randall, David, Thomas and Jennifer Bellsky, Joseph and Jeffrey Tenbusch, and Keith, Gregory and Chad Tenbusch; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, John and Edward Tenbusch; and one sister-in-law, Bea Tenbusch. Peter and Paul School in Ruth for Masses or to the charity of the donor's choice. Fred Gottschalk Fredrick H. Gottschalk, 46, well-known Meade Township farmer, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, at his home following a long battle with cancer. Fred was born Dec. 18, 1953, in Bad Axe, son of Herman and Regina (Krajenka) Gottschalk. Mr. Gottschalk and Debra A. Frantz were married Feb. 24, 1973, at St. John Catholic Church, Ubly, by Fr. Ben. The couple have been married more than 27 years and made their home in Meade Township where they farmed. Fred was a graduate of Kinde High School, Class of 1972, farmed with his father for many years, served on the Elkton Co-op Elevator Board of Directors for six years, was an advisory board member for Cooperative Elevators and was past president of the Huron County Bean Growers. He also was instrumental on the steering committee for the Thumb Oilseed Producers. He enjoyed playing basketball, golf and snowmobiling, coached in the Kinde softball league and was a coach for the Pee-Wee basketball team. Fred was a parishioner of St. Edward's Catholic Church, Kinde. Surviving are his wife, Debra; a daughter, Jennifer Wagester and her husband, Raymond, of Portland; a son, Jeffrey Gottschalk of Filion; his parents, Herman and Regina Gottschalk of Filion; five sisters, Elaine Fields of Kalamazoo, Frances Szymanski and her husband, Tom, of Port Austin, Virginia Gottschalk and her husband, John, of Hemlock, Pauline Booms and her husband, Ronald, of Ruth and Alice Neesley and her husband, Dan, of Glendale, Wisc.; brothers-in-law, Richard Frantz and his special friend, Marge Andreski, of Kinde and Kenneth Frantz and his wife, Sarah, of Bad Axe; sisters- in-law Denise Frantz of Whitmore Lake and Karen Talaski and her husband, Domonick, of Bad Axe; his stepmother-in-law, Dolores Frantz of Fort Meade, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. Dr. Kenneth Herrington Dr. Kenneth Herrington, 71, of Bad Axe, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000 at Huron Memorial Hospital in Bad Axe. He was born Aug. 23, 1928 in Bad Axe to the late Dr. Willet J. II and Margaret (Moore) Herrington. He married Patricia Herriman in 1952. Dr. Ken graduated from Admiral Billard Academy in Conn., in 1954 and received his bachelor of arts degree from the University of Michigan in June 1950. In 1954, he received his M.D. from the University of Michigan. He interned at Grace Hospital in Detroit and had a residency in Internal Medicine at Hurley Hospital in Flint. He served two years in the United States Army. Dr. Herrington was past president of the Huron County Medical Society and past chief of staff at Huron Memorial Hospital. He served 10 years on the board of directors of the Michigan State Medical Society and was a Huron County delegate to the Michigan State Medical Society for 23 years. He began his practice of medicine in Bad Axe in 1960 and retired in June of 1998. This bring to a close 118 years of family medicine in Bad Axe. Dr. Herrington was associated with the Boy Scouts of America for 55 years, holding many positions. He was an Eagle Scout. He also was a member of Sacred Heart Parish where he facilitated bible classes for eight years. He was a member of the Bad Axe Rotary Club for 20 years. He also enjoyed skiing, sailing, tennis, astronomy and was an avid photographer. He is survived by his wife, Patricia; children, Michael Herrington and his wife, Kim, of Bad Axe, Mary Kay Vargo and her husband, Don, of St. Clair Shores; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Willet J. Herrington III, and his wife, Joan, of Garden City, and Hira M. Herrington and his wife, Joanne, of Fraser; one step brother, Robert Hoover and his wife, Patsy of Zeeland; and four nieces and four nephews. A mass of Christian burial will take place at 1:30 p.m. Monday Aug. 7, 2000, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe with the Rev. Jack Leipert officiating. A Scripture service will be at 6:30 p.m. today. Burial will be in Colfax Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today and from noon until 1 p.m. Monday at the MacAlpine Funeral Home of Bad Axe. Eusebia Sanchez Eusebia Consepcion Sanchez, 68, of Pigeon, passed away suddenly on Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, at her home. She was born in Carne City, Texas on March 5, 1932, the daughter of Bonifacio and Josephina (Cabasos) Garses. On Nov. 22, 1954 she was united in marriage to Desiderio R. "D.R." Sanchez in Victoria, Texas. He preceded her in death on Nov. 25, 1997. Mrs. Sanchez was a homemaker throughout her lifetime, and enjoyed crafting, sewing, crocheting and gardening. She was a member of the Bay Port United Methodist Church. She is survived by four sons, Luis Sanchez, and his wife, Elida, of Sinton, Texas, Desi Sanchez and his wife, Suzanne, of Pigeon, Ramon Sanchez and his wife, Keri, of Bay Port, and Ramiro Sanchez and his wife, Geri, of Morenci; six daughters, Elena Garcia of Morenci, Angelina Emerson of Houston, Texas, Adelita Gamboa and her husband, John, of Plainview Texas, Anita Ertel and her husband, Tim, of Sebewaing, Amelia Pelletier and her husband, Dave, of Pigeon and Tonie Farmer of Daytona Fla.; 29 grandchildren; five great grandchildren; her mother, Josephina Sanchez of Three Rivers, Texas; a brother Paul Sanchez of Beeville, Texas; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Nicholas Sanchez; a grandson; her father, Bonifacio Garses; two sisters, Aurora Salinas and Rosa Guaijardo. Funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. Monday Aug. 7, 2000, at the Bay Port United Methodist Church with Rev. Alger T. Lewis officiating. Burial will be in the New Bay Port Cemetery, Fairhaven Township. Visitation will be from 4 until 9 p.m. today at the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home, Pigeon. Anna Rogers Anna Marie Rogers, 38, of Olive Hill, Ky., and formerly of Pigeon, died Wednesday evening, Aug. 2, 2000, at St. Claire Medical Center, Moorehead, Ky. She was born Feb. 2, 1962 in Pigeon to Joan G. (McArdle) Blome and the late Donald Blome. Anna was a 1980 graduate of Laker High School and moved to Williamston, near Lansing, a short time later. In 1996, she moved to Moorehead, Ky., with her family and took a position at St. Claire Medical Center, where she was a surgical assistant. She was a member of the Olive Hill Church of the Nazarene and marvelous artist and poet. Surviving are her husband, Gary; two daughters Sarah and Amanda at home; her mother, Joan Blome of Pigeon; her brother, Tim Blome and his wife, Raynette, of Pigeon; and three sisters, Arlene Jamison and her husband, Ron, of Cass City, Marjorie Justin and her husband, Jim, of Bad Axe, and Donna Deering of Pigeon. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday Aug. 7, 2000 at the Champagne Funeral Chapel, Elkton. Burial will be near her father in Grandlawn Cemetery, Pigeon. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today and after 10 a.m. Monday. Memorials may be given to the family. Velda Jakubowski Velda M. Jakubowski, 85, of Harbor Beach, passed away Aug. 4, 2000, at the Harbor Beach Long Term Care facility in Harbor Beach. Velda was born Oct. 30, 1914 in Gladwin County. She married Harold Jakubowski on June 24, 1936. He preceded her in death on Dec. 13, 1990. She owned and operated Western Auto until retirement in 1976. Surviving are Colleen Ortenburg and her husband, Ernest, of Harbor Beach; two grand daughters, Eryn Berry and her husband, Dwight, of Oklahoma City, OK, Erica Le Vasseur, and her husband, Alan, of Merritt Island, Fla.; four great grandchildren, Keith and Melissa Berry of Oklahoma City, Ok, Heather and Rebekah La Vasseur of Merritt Island, Fla.; two sisters, Dorothy Warner, of Clare, Donna Haines and her husband, Ervin, of Gladwin; aunt Helen Ogg of Gladwin; many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by a sister, Verna Shearer in 1992 and a brother, Wendell Foor in 1999. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday Aug. 7, 2000 at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Gladwin. Rev.
