Frederick, 83, of Florida and formerly of Rapson, died Monday, May 8, 2000, at Mercy Hospital in Port Huron. She was born Nov. 16, 1916, in Parisville, daughter of the late Lawrence and Veronica (Ginther) Miller. She married George Frederick on Jan. 15, 1938, at St. Mary's Catholic Church of Parisville. She attended Sigel Country School. She moved to Detroit and did domestic work for a few years. She resided in many areas of Michigan before moving in 1943 to Rapson. She farmed until 1973 and then moved to Florida where she resided for 27 years. She enjoyed crocheting, needlework and visiting with her family. She is survived by her husband, George, of Port Huron; one son, John Frederick and his wife, Tina, of Garden; three daughters, Janet Bischer and her husband, Melvin, of Ruth, Doris Frederick of Ubly, and Ann Dudas and her husband, Donald, of Port Huron; seven grandchildren, Philip Bischer, Pauline Geiger and her husband, Brad, Dr. Nancy Krohn and her husband, Scott, Brenda Frederick, Jessica Dudas, Theresa Dudas and Michael Dudas; and seven great-grandchildren, Nicole Geiger, Stephanie Geiger, Jaclyn Geiger, Shelby Krohn, Ethan Krohn, Sara Beth Frederick and Jonathan Frederick. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Veronica Ann Frederick; two grandchildren, Melvin Joseph and Phyllis Maria Bischer; three brothers, Edward, Louis and Ignatius Miller; and two sisters, Theresa Woychowski and Dorothy Dezelski. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 10, 2000, at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ruth. The Rev. Ronald Wagner, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Our Lady of Lake Huron Cemetery of Harbor Beach. There will be a parish wake service at 8 p.m. tonight at Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly. Visitation will be 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. tonight and from 9:30 to noon Wednesday at the funeral home. Eleanor Steffen Eleanor J. Steffen, 73, of Caseville, formerly of Caro, passed away on Sunday, May 7,2000, at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon. She was born on Oct. 29, 1926, in Caro and lived all her life in the Thumb of Michigan. She was a graduate of Caro High School. The former Eleanor June Roblin married Lewis Steffen on May 10, 1947, in Caro. He preceded her in death on Feb. 1, 1983. She spent all her working career in clerical work for Osgerby Insurance, Maiers Motor Freight, and then, until her retirement, at the Caro Regional Center. She loved people, Las Vegas, playing pool and cards, and doing crossword puzzles. She was a member of the Women of the Moose Chapter No. 940 and Serta, the Michigan State Employees Club. She is survived by two sisters; Dorothy Campbell and her husband, Herbert, of Custer, and Gladys Schuch and her husband, Frank, of Charlevoix; a brother, William Roblin and his wife, Charlotte, of Caro; special friends, George Sulla of Caseville and Clara and Walt Halabis of Caro; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lois, in 1949; and two sisters, Leona Roblin and Helen Klea. The funeral will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 10, 2000, at Collon Funeral Home in Caro with the Rev. Duane Miller of the Caro United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Almer Township Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until the time of services at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Scheurer Hospital or the American Cancer Society. Olaf Sumner Olaf "Catfish" Sumner, 78, of Oak Beach died Saturday evening, May 6, 2000, at Covenant-Cooper Hospital in Saginaw. He was born Jan. 17, 1922, in Sunbright, Tenn., to the late Charles and Velma (Young) Sumner. On June 1, 1971, he was united in marriage to Wanda (Nichols) Easterwood in Detroit. This was a second marriage for both of them after being widowed. Between them, they were blessed with six children: Suellen Sale and her husband, Richard, of Detroit, Douglas Easterwood and his wife, Christine, of Lincoln Park, Sharon Easterwood of Detroit, David Easterwood and his wife, Beth, of Chelsea, Shelly Kelley and her husband, Kevin, of St. Clair Shores, and Alfreda Sumner of Waterword, N.Y. Mr. Sumner had been a salesman for Wards Bakery in Detroit for 25 years, retiring in April 1977. They had been coming to the Port Austin area for a number of years before settling near Oak Beach in 1980. He was a past active member of the Gilead Baptist Church, Detroit, driving their bus and teaching Sunday school, and he attended the Caseville United Methodist Church. Catfish was well-known along the shore as an avid fisherman, hence the nickname. He also will be remembered for his crafts and his unique talent of making beautiful flowers from discarded milk jugs. His favorite time of year was Library Week where he was able to show the children the art of flower making. Besides his wife and children, he is survived by 11 grandchildren, Derek, Jennifer, Matthew, Mark, Jessica, Alan, Seth, Brandon, Amanda, Lawrence and Catrina; and two brothers, Carol Sumner and William Sumner. He was preceded in death by a brother, Avery Sumner. In keeping with his wishes, there will be no public visitation or services. A private memorial service for the family will be conducted at a later date. Memorials may be given to the Pigeon District Library. Arrangements are being handled by the Champagne Funeral Chapel, Caseville. Maude Hagar Maude I. Hagar, 83, of Gagetown died Sunday, May 7, 2000, in Covenant-Harrison Hospital in Saginaw. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 10, 2000, at the Gagetown United Methodist Church in Gagetown with the Rev. Alice Sheffield officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood Township Cemetery, Gagetown. Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Kranz Funeral Home in Cass City. Memorials may be made to the Gagetown United Methodist Church. Regina Bushey Regina Bushey, 80, died Saturday afternoon, May 6, 2000, at the Deckerville Community Hospital, following an extended illness. She was born Feb. 2, 1920, in Huron County. She was the daughter of the late Frank and Josephine (Rice) Drake. Miss Regina Drake and Mr. William Bushey were married Sept. 7, 1940, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Dwight. He preceded her in death in 1990. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Dwight and belonged to several church groups. She enjoyed playing cards and was associated with several card groups. Regina also was a foster parent for some 20 years, caring for April Langford, until her stroke in 1987. Surviving are one daughter, Angela Brennan and her husband, Alvin, of Lakeport; three sons, Robert Bushey and his wife, Jeanne, of Mountain Home, Ark., David Bushey and his special friend, Rita, of Lakeport and Dennis Bushey of Bad Axe; several grandchildren, step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren; three sisters, Irene Veginski and her husband, Felix, of Port Austin, Alma Zauner and her husband, John, of Marysville, and Barbara Perz of Marysville; and several nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 9, 2000, at St. Edward's Catholic Church, Kinde, with the Rev. John Killop, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Edward's Cemetery. There will be a rosary by the St. Edward's Ladies Sodality at 6 p.m. tonight at the MacAlpine Funeral Home, Gage Chapel, in Kinde. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, and from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Autumnwood Nursing Home, Deckerville. Kenneth Hurren Kenneth L. Hurren, 74, of Harbor Beach passed away Saturday, May 6, 2000, in Harbor Beach Community Hospital following a long illness. Born on Aug. 21,1925, in Harbor Beach, he was the son of the late Clarence and Naomi (Essenmacher) Hurren. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II for two years and landed at Omaha Beach in the invasion of Europe on June 6, 1945. Wounded in Aachen, Germany, he then served in the 8th Air Force in England until the war ended. He received the Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart and the Combat Infantry Badge. Ken and Edith Zurick were married on Oct. 19, 1946, in Harbor Beach. He was a retired employee of the NutraSweet Co. in Harbor Beach, retiring in 1988 after 20-plus years there. He was a member of Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church, Harbor Beach, the VFW Post No. 99344 of Harbor Beach and the Disabled American Veterans. Ken is survived by his wife, Edith Hurren, of Harbor Beach; three sons, Thomas Hurren and his wife, Nancy, of Whitehall, Jack Hurren and his wife, Bonnie, of Ruth, and Norman Hurren and his wife, Joyce, of Carsonville; seven grandchildren, Aaron, Stephanie, Curtis, Scott, Jeffrey, Ryan and Kristal; two step-grandchildren, Ian and Jack; two great-grandchildren, Kylie and Trysten; four sisters, Lucille Breathour of Mount Morris, Shirley Newton of Fort Gratiot, Anna Cantanzero of Port Huron and Dorothy Detgen of Port Hope; and four brothers, Ronnie Hurren of Tennessee, William Hurren of Sterling, Russell Hurren of California, and Reginald Hurren of Sterling. He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Hurren; and a sister, June Guitar. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 9, 2000, in Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach with the Rev. Edward Konieczka, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military honors by the VFW Post. A parish vigil service will take place at 8 p.m. tonight in the Ramsey Funeral Home, Harbor Beach, a Golden Rule Funeral Home. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. today and from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church or the American Lung Association. June Nelson A memorial service for June Nelson, 90, of Caseville, who died Thursday, April 20, 2000, will be conducted at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, May 11, 2000, at the Champagne Funeral Chapel, Caseville. Visitation will be after 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the Pigeon District Library or the Huron County Historical Society. Donald McLean Donald C. McLean of Bad Axe died Thursday, May 4, 2000, in New Port Richey, Fla. A memorial service is tentatively scheduled for 11 a.m., Monday, May 15, 2000 at the First Presbyterian Church of Bad Axe. A complete obituary will appear in the May 12 edition of the Huron Daily Tribune. MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe is handling the arrangements. Kay E. Bearden Kay. E. Bearden, 66 of Allen Park, died Saturday, May 6 2000 in Oakwood Commons, Dearborn. Visitation is from 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Monday at the Dayton Center Church in Silverwood. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 9. 1
