For the week of November 12, 2000 Monday, November 13, 2000 Mary Freilach On Sunday, Nov. 12, 2000, the Lord God took Mary Freilach, 87, of Owendale into his loving arms. She was born Aug. 30, 1913, at the home of her parents, Nicholas and Leona (Pevarnic) Swiastyn in the Ukraine and moved as a baby with her family to Detroit. In May 1934, she was united in marriage to Anthony Freilach in Pontiac. He preceded her in death on Feb. 3, 1972. They lived in Rochester for 20 years before moving to Grant Township in 1956 to farm. In 1966, she started working at Automotive Industries in Owendale until they closed. Mary was a wonderful mother and friend who walked this earth with kindness and love. She gave tenderly to everyone. With love and sadness in our hearts we will truly miss her, our mother, grandmother and friend. Surviving are one son, Theodore Freilach and his wife, Terrie, of Owendale; five daughters, Patricia Waterman of Winter Haven, Fla., Marilyn Verville and her husband, Bernie, of Pomona Park, Fla., Leona Freilach and her friend, Robert, of Kinde, Catherine Johnston of Elkton, and Alicia Morneau and her husband, Ray, of Owendale; 20 grandchildren, Marcia, Buddy, Dawn, Vincent, Ernie, John, Clifford, Mark, Brian, Tina, Tammy, Christy, Brandi, Anthony, Brittney, Pam, Bonnie, Terrie, John and Kathy; 26 great-grandchildren; one brother, David Swiastyn and his wife, JoAnn, of Owendale; and one sister, Anne Grishabor of Belleville. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Mike, Tony and Willie. A funeral mass will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2000, at St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church, Pigeon. Sr. Theresa Fox, pastoral administrator, will officiate with burial in the Riverside Cemetery, Elkton. Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. this evening, 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, and 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Champagne Funeral Chapel, Elkton. Memorials may be made to St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church. Frankie Jones Frankie Jones, 79, of Port Hope passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000, at the Harbor Beach Community Hospital. He was born on May 4, 1921, in Beaverton, son of the late William and Laura (Wolf) Jones. He married Edna Pelton-Hartz on May 12, 1969, in Midland. Mr. Jones worked for McNalley & Nimergood for several years and was proud to be a lifetime member of the International Union of Operating Engineers of Local 324. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He is survived by his wife, Edna, of Port Hope; four daughters, Frances Houck and her husband, Leonard, Linda Walters, Denice Jones and Bonnie Dulong; a stepdaughter, Cathy Hartz of Harbor Beach; a sister, Mary Bailey; a brother, Howard Jones and his wife, Joan; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren, Scott Hartz of Harbor Beach and Charity Rich of Ubly; two step-great- grandchildren; and his pet dog, Lady. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Earl Jones and John Jones; a sister, Mandy Hathaway; an infant son and an infant daughter; one grandson; and one step- grandson. In keeping with Mr. Jones' wishes, there will be no funeral service. A memorial service will be conducted at a later date. Arrangements were handled by the Kaufman Funeral Home in Bad Axe. William Romberg William James "Bill" Romberg, 80, of Keswick, Ontario, Canada, passed away suddenly at his home on Friday, Nov. 10, 2000. He was born June 29, 1921, in Baltimore, Md. He was the dearly beloved husband of Bernadette (Enright) Romberg of Keswick; the loving father of Paul and Pearl Romberg of Ubly and Bryan and Barbara Romberg of Williamsburg. He is sadly missed by his 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren from Michigan, Alaska and Georgia. He was preceded in death by one son, Michael Romberg. Bill will be greatly missed by his many friends and relatives. A prayer service will take place at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2000, at the M.W. Becker Funeral Home, 490 The Queensway South, Keswick. Cremation will follow, with interment at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Bad Axe. Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Willard Vallance Willard J. Vallance, 72, of Lake Township died Saturday morning, Nov. 11, 2000, at Huron Memorial Hospital in Bad Axe. He was born April 29, 1928, in Sumter Township, Gratiot County, to Howard and Clista (Carson) Vallance. On Jan. 7, 1950, he was united in marriage to Emma Lou Mealoy in Petoskey, and they moved to the Pontiac area a short time later. Willard was a test driver for General Motors for 39 years, retiring Jan. 1, 1989. They moved to their cottage near Caseville later that month. He was a very active member of the Caseville Retirement club and also was a member of the Caseville Eagles. Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Lou; five sons, Larry Vallance and his wife, Mary, of Orion, Donald Vallance and his wife, Lori, of White Lake, Bill Vallance and his wife, Debbi, of Clarkston, Russell Vallance and his wife, Siggi, of Aub, Germany, and George Vallance and his wife, Marty, of Fowlerville; his daughter, Kim Gary and her husband, Loren, of Indian River; 15 grandchildren; five great- grandchildren; three brothers, Lawrence Vallance and his wife, Monica, of Davison, Irwin Vallance of Irving, Texas, and Maynard Vallance and his wife, Darlene, of Cheboygan; and his sister, Lila Griswold and her husband, Neil, of Cheboygan. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Howard and George; and two sisters, Mary Doner and Ellen Griswold. An Eagle memorial service will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000, at the Champagne Funeral Chapel, Caseville. Visitation will be 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society. Tuesday, November 14, 2000 Robert Holdwick Mr. Robert C. Holdwick, 81, of Ruth died Monday morning, Nov. 13, 2000, at St. Mary's Center in Saginaw. He was born Oct. 15, 1919, in Ruth, son of the late Henry and Anna (Bischer) Holdwick. He married Irene Volmering on Oct. 8, 1947, at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church of Ruth. He was a graduate of SS. Peter and Paul Elementary School. He farmed until Feb. 2, 1942. He then served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater until Oct. 16, 1945. He worked at Booms Silo for one year and at Midwest Rubber for 10 years as a machine operator and retired in 1972. He then farmed until he retired in 1989. He was the Adjutant for the Parisville VFW Post No. 5740 and an honorary life member. He was a lifelong parishioner of SS. Peter and Paul Church of Ruth. He was a member of various euchre clubs and was the Sherman Township Percipitation Authority. He enjoyed traveling. He and his wife of 53 years lived their entire married life on a farm near Ruth. He is survived by his wife, Irene, of Ruth; three sons, Russell Holdwick, Sr., and his wife, Cheryl, of Clinton Township, Duane Holdwick and his wife, Rhonda, of Lake Orion, and Mark Holdwick Sr., and his wife, Cheryl, of Corona, Calif.; five daughters, Jean Peruski of Saginaw, Carol Sparks of Saginaw, Rosalie Sparks of Harrison, Ohio, Bonnie Gainor and her husband, Douglas, of Bad Axe, and Elaine Aernie and her husband, Dennis, of Parchment; 17 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lenore Kups and her husband, Stanley, of Sterling Heights, and and Magdelene Stacer and her husband, Merlin, of Ruth; three brothers, Roman "Red" Holdwick and his wife, Clarann, of Harbor Beach, Leo Holdwick and his wife, Shirley, of Ruth, and Joseph Holdwick and his wife, Loraine, of Ruth; and one brother-in-law, Harold Stacer of Ruth. He was preceded in death by a sister, Loretta Stacer; two infant brothers, Clement and John; and a granddaughter, Tina Peruski. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, 2000, at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church of Ruth. The Rev. Steve Gavit, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the Parisville VFW Post No. 5740. There will be a parish wake service by Fr. Steve Gavit at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly. Visitation will be 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. this evening, from 1 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, and from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Patricia Marks Patricia Marks, 60, of Bad Axe passed away Monday, Nov. 13, 2000, at Huron Memorial Hospital in Bad Axe following a short illness. She was born on Sept. 27, 1940, in Detroit, daughter of the late Thomas R. and Thelma (Neal) Burk. She married Richard E. Marks in June 1956. Mrs. Marks was a former nurse at the Huron Medical Care Facility and at Huron Memorial Hospital. She previously was employed at the former Hammill Manufacturing in Bad Axe. She is survived by her husband, Richard E. Marks of Bad Axe; two sons, Russell Marks and his wife, Deborah, of Ubly and Richard Marks and his wife, Charlene, of Ubly; one daughter, Alaina Harwood and her husband, Dale, of Marlette; a brother, Thomas W. Burk and his wife, Sherry, of Owendale; a sister, Dorothy Healy and her husband, Delbert, of Cass City; and 10 grandchildren, Brian, Ashley, Ryan, R.J., Amanda and Alyssa Marks of Ubly, Angie Fabyan of Ubly, and Jeremy, Jeff and Jesse Harwood of Marlette. She was preceded in death by five sisters, Deloris Arras, Estella Galavez, Margaret Englehardt, Patricia Burk and Barbara Waggoner. A memorial service will take place at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2000, at the Kaufman Funeral Home in Bad Axe. Officiating will be Fr. T.J. Fleming, pastor of St. John's Catholic Church in Ubly. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until the time of services Wednesday. Thursday, November 16, 2000 Roy Horn Roy E. Horn, 84, of Pigeon passed away Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000, at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon. He was born in McKinley Township on July 23, 1916, the son of the late Jeremiah and Christina (Kroll) Horn. On Sept. 23, 1939, he was united in marriage to Bette J. Snay at Otisville. She survives him. Mr. Horn attended the Hayes School during his childhood. He retired from Scenic Golf and Country Club, Pigeon, in 1976, having worked as a grounds keeper for 17 years. He was a member of the Pigeon Conservation Club as well as the North American Hunting Club. He is survived by his wife, Bette; a daughter, Gail Krenz and her husband, Don, of Pigeon; two sons, William Horn and his wife, Ginger, of East Lansing, and Thomas Horn of Pigeon; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, Tori, Shelby, Adam, Luke and Alexis; several nieces and nephews; and two sisters-in-law, Elsie Horn of Mount Morris and Neida Horn of Clio. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Walter, Elmer, Ted and Lawrence. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 17, 2000, at the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home, Pigeon, with the Rev. Allen DeGraw, pastor of Hayes United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Caseville Township Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until the time of services at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hayes United Methodist Church. Friday, November 17, 2000 Deanna Barsaleau Deanna Jean Barsaleau, 13, of Bad Axe passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2000, due to injuries sustained in a pedestrian/auto accident. She was born on Sept. 21, 1987, in Dubois, Pa. She was the daughter of the Rev. Jay and Lisa (Erdman) Barsaleau. Deanna was home schooled to grade 7. She enjoyed her hobbies of soccer, cross stitching, taking care of her dog, Jade, and collecting tea cups and porcelain dolls. She was a member of the Bad Axe First Baptist Church. She loved her family, friends and her Lord. Surviving are her parents, the Rev. Jay and Lisa Barsaleau of Bad Axe; two sisters, Annica and Aubrianna of Bad Axe; three brothers, Joshua of Grand Rapids and Aaron and Nolan of Bad Axe; grandparents, Jean Barsaleau of New Britain, Conn., Robert and Janice Erdman of Minden City and Jack and Fran Barsaleau of Meridian, Conn.; several aunts, uncles and cousins. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 18, 2000, at the Bad Axe First Baptist Church . Dr. Rick Flanders, pastor of Juniata Baptist Church in Vassar, will officiate. Burial will be in Colfax Township Cemetery in Bad Axe. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today at the MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Memorials can be made to the Bad Axe First Baptist Church. Maynard Rheinheimer Maynard Rheinheimer, 74, of Pigeon, passed away Wednesday Nov. 15, 2000, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. He was born in Goshen, Ind., on Sept. 23, 1926, the son of the late Clayton and Maude (Miller) Rheinheimer. He served with the United States Army during World War II. On June 15, 1952, he was united in marriage to Mildred E. Albrecht in Pigeon. She survives him. Mr. Rheinheimer worked as a gas station attendant for the Cooperative Elevator Oil Co. for 36 years, until his retirement in July of 1988. He was a faithful and dedicated member of the Pigeon River Mennonite Church. His survivors include his wife of more than 48 years, Mildred; two sons, Terry Rheinheimer and his wife, Jill, of Ann Arbor and Kent Rheinheimer and his wife, Debra, of Pigeon; four granddaughters, Candelien, Amber, Kristin and Alissa Rheinheimer; a great-granddaughter, Skyla Kay Rheinheimer; three sisters, Lois Blosser and her husband, Virgil, of Goshen, Ind., Ester Hoover and her husband, Floyd, of Elkhart, Ind., Pauline Schrock of Arizona; four brothers, Alfred Rheinheimer of Middlebury, Ind., Floyd Rheinheimer and Ivan Rheinheimer and his wife, Evelyn, of Arizona and Ernest Rheinheimer of Goshen, Ind.; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, John. Funeral services will take place at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000, at the Pigeon River Mennonite Church with Rev. Tom Beachy, pastor, and the Rev. Luke Yoder officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 tonight and from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home, a Golden Rule Funeral Home, in Pigeon, and from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the church. Memorials may be made to the Pigeon River Mennonite Church or St. Paul Lutheran School in Ann Arbor. John Vollmer John A. Vollmer, 80, of Pigeon passed away on Thursday, Nov. 16, 2000, at his home. Mass of Christian burial will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 20, 2000, at the St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church in Pigeon. Arrangements, which are being handled by the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home, a Golden Rule Funeral Home, in Pigeon, are incomplete at this time.
