She was born Nov. 11, 1901, in Pigeon to Jeremiah and Ellen (Krampien) Shantz. She married John A. Anker on Nov. 17, 1925, in Owendale. He died Aug. 19, 1962. Irma was a member of the Gagetown Church of the Nazarene and Elmwood Women's Extension Club for more than 20 years. She enjoyed raising her family, gardening and flowers. Irma is survived by her children, Norris Anker of Orion, Marjorie Braddock of Chatsworth, Calif., Stanley Anker and his wife, Joan, of Saginaw, Howard Anker and his wife, Patricia, of Saginaw, Geraldine Brown of Vassar, Donald Anker of Cass City, Audrey Short and her husband, Ralph, of Goodlettsville, Tenn., Lyle Anker and his wife, Judy, of Cass City, Mary Thayer and her husband, David, of Vassar, and Cathy Anker of Vassar; 37 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; seven great-great- grandchildren; sister-in-law, Lenora Shantz of Gagetown; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her grandsons, William Anker, Robert Anker and Nelson Anker; sister, Eliminda Proudfoot; brother Clarence Shantz; and son-in-law, Vern Brown. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 25, 2000, at Kranz Funeral Home in Cass City with the Rev. Donald K. Ault of Gagetown Church of the Nazarene officiating. Interment will be in Elkland Township Cemetery, Cass City. Visitation will be 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today and noon to 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Gagetown Church of the Nazarene or the American Cancer Society. Ralph Henne Ralph E. "Pat" Henne, 84, of Bay Port died Thursday, March 23, 2000, at his home following a six-year illness. He was born Aug. 4, 1915, in Bay Port, son of the late Herman E. and Kathleen (Cullen) Henne. He was united in marriage to Clara A. Baur on March 4, 1940, in Sylvania, Ohio. Ralph received a degree in business administration at Ferris State University and a degree in chemical engineering from Michigan State University. He was employed at Wallace and Morley Elevator and then Blunt's in Bay Port for many years before retiring in 1971. He was a member of Bay Port United Methodist Church. He was a pilot and was an avid reader. He also loved spending time with his grandchildren. Surviving are his wife, Clara A. Henne of Bay Port; three sons, Dennis Patrick Henne and his wife, Jan, of Bay Port, John Garlent Henne of Beijing, China, and Herman Edward Henne of Bay Port; seven grandchildren, Timothy Schafer, Layne Henne, Michele Lauth, Shelly Wurst, Jenifer Henne, Erik Henne and Misty Henne; great-grandchildren Shannon Schafer, T.J. Schafer, Derik Henne Wurst, Kalyn Wurst and Lauren Lauth; four sisters, Isabelle Kuhl of Berkley, Jane Wooley of Mount Pleasant, Frances Jeroue of Midland, and Kathleen Hailey of Oklahoma; a special friend, Bonnie Henne of New York; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters, Warren and James Henne, Anna Treat, Willo Anker and Ruth Sullivan. Robert Jewett Robert C. Jewett, 62, of Sandusky died Wednesday, March 22, 2000, at McKenzie Memorial Hospital in Sandusky. He was born Jan. 21, 1938, in Detroit, the son of the late Louis and Louise (Panck) Jewett. He lived in this area for approximately 20 years. Robert loved the outdoors, wildlife, westerns and being around people. He is survived by the mother of his children, Rosemarie Cipponeri of Sandusky; sons Michael Jewett and his wife, Kathy, of Gaylord, Robert Jewett and his wife, Stacy, of Lexington, John Jewett of Caro, Mark Jewett of Bad Axe, and Lewis Jewett of Gaylord; daughters Shelly Rogers and her husband, Jim, of Bad Axe, and Dawn Jewett of Lexington; a brother, Paul Jewett of Sandusky; a sister, Deanna Colburn of Sandusky; 23 grandchildren; and two great- grandchildren. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ron; a sister, Joyce; and a grandson, Deryk Jewett. Funeral services were conducted Friday, March 24, 2000, at 1 p.m. at Marsh Funeral Chapel, Sandusky, with the Rev. Paul Castle officiating. Burial was in the Greenwood Cemetery in Sandusky. Lloyd Mattice Lloyd Albert Mattice, 74, of Bad Axe died March 22, 2000, at Huron Memorial Hospital in Bad Axe. He was born May 10, 1925, in Bad Axe, son of the late Robert and Cora Mae (Hughes) Mattice. Lloyd lived in Bad Axe all his life and was loved and respected by all who knew him. He was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Bad Axe. He worked for the Bad Axe Theatre, Hebner's Block Plant, Jack Marks Septic Tank Builders and Brown's Egg Plant. He enjoyed riding his bike around town waving at his friends and neighbors and drawing crosses and Christmas trees. Surviving are one sister, Dorothy Mae Landenberg of Bad Axe; one brother, Clayton Mattice and his wife, Eileen, of Bad Axe; and over 100 nieces and nephews. Mr. Mattice was preceded in death by three sisters, Viola Wendland, Leona Wenzel and Cora Garascia; six brothers, twins Roy and Ray Mattice, Robert Mattice, Leland Mattice, Warren Mattice and Richard Mattice. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 25, 2000, at Our Savior Lutheran Church of Bad Axe. The Rev. Kenneth D. Lueke, pastor, will officiate. Memorials may be made to the family of Lloyd Mattice. Frank Lemanski Mr. Frank J. Lemanski, 87, of Deford died Tuesday evening, March 21, 2000, at Hills and Dales General Hospital in Cass City. He was born March 9, 1913, son of the late Felix and Stella (Petrykowska) Lemanski. He married Tillie Gosdzinski on Nov. 17, 1934, in Detroit. She was his loving wife for 46 years. She preceded him in death on Dec. 28, 1980. He married Grace Sampica in May 1982 at St. Michael's in Wilmont. He was a graduate of Tyre Country School. He was a World War II veteran of 1261st Engineer Combat Company A. He was a member of the VFW Post No. 3644 of Cass City. He was a United Auto Workers journeyman welder at Woodall Co. in the Detroit area for 33 years, retiring in 1975. He moved to Deford in 1974. He was a parishioner at St. Michael's in Wilmont. After retirement, he built a home in Deford, did welding for neighbors and enjoyed planting a huge garden each year. He is survived by his wife, Grace, of Deford; one stepdaughter, Kim Gross and her husband, David, of South Lyon; one stepson, David Sampica and his wife, Chris, of Simmerman, Minn.; five step- grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jennie "Ann" Rutka and Phyllis Salowitz; one brother, Chester Lemanski; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one brother, Alexander Lemanski; and two sisters, Louise Grzebski and Regina Lemanski. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, March 24, 2000, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Parisville. The Rev. Stanley Surman will officiate. (Clunker) Yonke, 79, longtime Unionville farmer and owner of Ed's Bar, died Tuesday morning, March 21, 2000, at his home following a lengthy illness. He was born Jan. 26, 1921, in Unionville, son of the late Edward and Regina Yonke. He was united in marriage to Virginia Hessler in 1982 in Unionville. Ed farmed in the Unionville area for many years and owned and operated Ed's Bar for 45 years before retiring two years ago due to ill health. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Unionville. He also was an avid woodworker. Surviving are his wife, Virginia Yonke, of Unionville; stepchildren, Bruce and Pam Hessler of Mount Clemens, Burt Hessler of Unionville, Bryan and Karen Hessler of Warren, Robert and Cheryl Hessler of Clarkston, Victoria and Joseph Trischler of Akron, Brett and Sigi Hessler of West Germany, Kathy Hudson of Pigeon, and Barry Marshall of Frankenmuth; 15 step-grandchildren; one step-great- grandchild; a brother, William Yonke and his wife, Nona, of Unionville; two nephews; and one niece. Selma Zurek Mrs. Selma Zurek, 90, of Ubly died Monday evening, March 20, 2000, at her son's residence in Caro after an extended illness. She was born on Oct. 29, 1909, in Parisville, daughter of the late Joseph and Catherine (Shubert) Wrubel. She married Peter Paul Zurek on Aug. 22, 1926, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Parisville. He preceded her in death on Dec. 4, 1997. Selma attended country school, lived in Detroit and returned to Ubly with her husband to farm in 1933 until the mid-1950s. She was a member of St. John Parish of Ubly since 1933 and an honorary member of St. Monica Circle No. 2 St. John Christian Mothers. Selma is survived by one daughter, Eleanor Ulfig and her husband, Gene, of Dearborn Heights; two sons, Donald Zurek and his wife, Mary Jane, of Ubly, and Vern Zurek and his wife, Kaye, of Caro; 12 grandchildren; numerous great- grandchildren; two brothers, Jacob Wrubel and his wife, Helen, of Shelby Township, and David Wrubel and his wife, Marie, of Warren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Peter Jr. and Gerald Zurek; one sister, Genevieve Wyrick; and four brothers, John, Cas, Isadore and Harry Wrubel. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 25, 2000, at St. John Catholic Church in Ubly. The Rev. T.J. Fleming, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. There will be a Christian Mothers rosary at 8 p.m. Thursday and a parish wake service at 8 p.m. Friday, both at Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly. Visitation will be 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday, 1 to 9 p.m. Friday, and 8 to 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. John McCarren, Jr. John A. "Bud" McCarren, Jr., died March 8, 2000, at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. He was born April 2, 1934, in Port Crescent to John and Nellie McCarren. Bud was a veteran of the Korean War and was an employee of Kelsey-Hayes in Romulus. He was an avid fisherman during his youth. His survivors include his mother, Nellie McCarren Flanery, a resident of Sunny Acres Nursing Center in Bad Axe; his wife, Lois; three children, Kenneth, Nancy and Lois Marie; three sisters, Annabel Fatalski and her husband, Richard, Delores Kollhoff and her husband, Ernest, of Evert, and Grace Baker and her husband, William, of Bad Axe; five brothers, Robert McCarren and his wife, Carol, of Lincoln Park, James McCarren of Dearborn, David McCarren and his wife, Y- He, of Maricopa, Ariz., Patrick McCarren and his wife, Judy, of Traverse City, and Joseph McCarren and his wife, Louise, of Allen Park; and many nieces and nephews. Bud was preceded in death by his father in 1949; and his infant sister, Suzanne, in 1946. Services were conducted on March 13, 2000, at the E.J. Mandziuk and Son Chapel in Warren. Interment was conducted on March 14, 2000, in the Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta with full military rites. Lillian Smith Lillian R. Smith, 83, of Port Austin died Monday morning, March 20, 2000, at American House in Lincoln Park. She was born May 27, 1916, in Detroit to the late George and Rose (Hoffmeyer) Eitel. On Aug. 27, 1936, she was united in marriage to James Ray Smith in Flat Rock. Mrs. Smith worked as a bookkeeper at the Red Star Credit Union in Detroit, retiring in May 1975. That year they moved from Madison Heights to their place in Port Austin, where they had been coming since 1947. Her husband preceded her in death that year on Sept. 17. She was a member of the United Protestant Church in Port Austin, the Caseville Eagles and a charter member of the Port Austin U & I Club, serving as treasurer until her health failed. Surviving are two daughters, Lois Mabrey and her husband, Ken, of Allen Park, and Janet Branham and her husband, Marvin, of Madison Heights; four grandchildren, Lorraine Wagner and her husband, Jimmey, Kenneth Mabrey, Anthony Branham and his wife, Michelle, and Eric Branham; a great- granddaughter, Monica Branham; two sisters, Gertie Hinchman of Caseville and Shirley Helisek of Dearborn; and her brother, Jake Eitel and his wife, Phyllis, of Sebring, Fla. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 23, 2000, at the Champagne Funeral Chapel, Caseville. The Rev. Gerald Yaroch Gerald Yaroch, 68, of Warren died Saturday, March 18, 2000, in St. Petersburg, Fla. He was born Aug. 22, 1931, in Port Austin, the son of the late Stefan and Emma (Stockoski) Yaroch. Gerald retired from the Chrysler Corp. in 1991. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Hamtramck. He is survived by three brothers, Harold Yaroch and his wife, Joanne, of Las Vegas, Nev., Victor Yaroch of Lansing, and William Yaroch of Port Austin. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 23, 2000, in St. Michael's Catholic Church, Port Austin, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. today, from 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, and from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Knoblock Funeral Home in Kinde. Loretta Boileau Loretta V. Boileau, 74, of Kingston died Sunday, March 19, 2000, at Covenant Healthcare-Harrison in Saginaw. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 23, 2000, at Kingston Wesleyan Church, Kingston, with Dr. Rudyard Fay officiating. Interment will be in Kingston Cemetery, Kingston. Memorials may be made to the Family Discretionary Fund. Elmeda Bechler Elmeda Bechler, 97, of Pigeon passed away Sunday, March 19, 2000, at her daughter's home on Rose Island. She was born in Baden, Ontario on Oct. 11, 1902, the daughter of the late Peter and Elizabeth (Swartzentruber) Litwiller. On Jan. 1,1929, she was united in marriage to Henry Bechler in Petersburg, Ontario. At the time of Mr. Bechler's death on Oct. 7, 1994, the couple had been married for more than 65 years. Mrs. Bechler was a homemaker throughout her lifetime and was a member of the Pigeon River Mennonite Church. She is survived by her daughter, Ruth Dutcher and her husband, Roland, of Sebewaing; a daughter-in-law, Beverly Bechler of Midland; four grandchildren, Judy Kretzschmer, Dennis Bechler, Bryan Bechler and Deanne Dutcher; six great- grandchildren, Jennifer Michalski, Jeremy and Jill Kretzschmer, and Shelby, Megan and Abigail Bechler; a great-great-granddaughter, Ashlen Michalski; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Glenn; a daughter, Ellen; and three brothers, Noah, Elmer and William. Clark, 72, of Harbor Beach passed away unexpectedly on Saturday evening, March 18, 2000, at Harbor Beach Community Hospital. Born in Detroit on April 27, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Nellie (Bundy) Brown. She and Charles Frederick Clark were married July 28, 1965, in Capac. She was a school bus driver for more than 18 years for the Capac and Harbor Beach Community Schools. She was a former real estate salesperson for Century 21 in Bad Axe and was most recently with Real Estate One in Harbor Beach. Vi and Fred enjoyed camping and traveled about with the Good Sam Club and the Coast to Coast Camping Club. She was also a member of the Thumb Two-Cylinder Club and Zion Lutheran Church in Harbor Beach. She enjoyed collecting dolls. She is survived by her husband, Charles Frederick Clark of Harbor Beach; two sons, Larry Gottschalk and his wife, Nancy, of Gaylord and Dennis Gottschalk and his wife, Barb, of Capac; three daughters, Dawn Wolschleger and her husband, Mark, of Harbor Beach, Cindy Schubring and her husband, James, of Milan and Melody Clark of Bad Axe; one stepson, Dennis Clark and his wife, Kim, of Harbor Beach; a stepdaughter, Cinthia Kluger and her husband, Frank, of Bad Axe; 19 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Leona Belt of Toledo, Ohio, and Marjorie Agnew of Florida. Shimer, 79, of Whitelake died Sunday, March 19, 2000, at Huron Valley Hospital in Commerce Township. He was born March 20, 1920, in Eckhart, Md., to Clevland and Mary (Skelly) Shimer. He married Inez D. Lockard on Oct. 18, 1941, at Frostburg, Md. She died Sept. 4, 1992. Roy worked for the Detroit News doing machine repair. He served during World War II as a Private First Class in the U.S. Army. Roy enjoyed woodworking and building homes. He loved to hunt for small game and enjoyed boat rides. Roy is survived by his son, Roy L. Shimer and his wife, Carol, of Deford; a daughter-in-law, Janet Shimer of Warren; grandchildren, Richard Shimer of Chesterfield, Keith Shimer and his wife, Lynn, of Mount Clemens, Tammy Caporuscio and her husband, Michael, of Sandusky, Donald Shimer of Macomb Township, Marlene Shimer of Fostoria, Gary Shimer and his wife, Pam, of Warren and David Shimer of Warren; great-grandchildren, Angie, Robert, Daniel, Michael and Carollyn Caporuscio, Sarah Shimer and Randi Shimer; and a brother, Donald J. Shimer of Whitelake. He was preceded in death by his son, Gary E. Shimer, on July 21, 1999; and a brother, Edward Shimer. Memorials may be made to the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan. Arthur Sommers Arthur W. Sommers, 83, of Adrian died March 19, 2000, at Herrick Memorial Hospital. He was born June 17, 1916, in Port Hope, the son of Frank and Olga (Ender) Sommers. On July 3, 1944, he married Ruth Ferrington in Ruth. Mr. Sommers was a resident of the Tecumseh and Adrian areas the past 25 years and was retired from Meyers Industries. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Arthur is survived by three sisters, Alma Iseler of Pigeon, Valinda Anderson of Bad Axe, and LaDona Engel and her husband, Herbert, of Bad Axe; and three sisters-in-law, Marlene Sommers of Tecumseh, Gwen Sommers of Bad Axe, and Ellen Sommers of Traverse City. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruth; one son, Richard; and four brothers, Freddie, Edgar, Gerald and Dewain Sommers. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 22, 2000, at the Purse Funeral Home in Tecumseh, with the Rev. Paul W. Herter officiating. Irven Miller, Sr. Irven Paul Miller, Sr., 84, of Tampa, Fla., died Thursday, March 16, 2000, at James Haley Veterans Hospital in Tampa, Fla. He was born Oct. 7, 1915, in Verona Township, son of the late Lester and Minnie Olive (Parney) Miller. Irven and Miss Anna Marie Kladzyk were married Dec. 31, 1941 in Bad Axe. Mr. Miller served in the United States Army in the Pacific Theater receiving honorable discharge and battlefield metals. Irven and Miss Anna Marie Kladzyk were married Dec. 31, 1941, in Bad Axe. He enjoyed horticulture and making knickknacks. Surviving are his wife, Anna Marie Miller of Tampa, Fla., one son, Irven Paul Miller Jr., of Cape Coral, Fla., four daughters, Marcella Jane Scott, Ethel Marie Miller, Patricia Ann Miller, Mary Carol Miller, all of Tampa, Fla.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; one brother, Clarence Miller and his wife, Eleanor, of Cass City and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Michelle Ann Miller; one son. Robert John Miller; one sister, Myrtle Ludlow; and two brothers, Lester Miller and Roy Miller. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 20, 2000, from the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. Father Jack Leipert, pastor, will officiate. Burial will take place in Sacred Heart Cemetery. A scripture service will take place at 7:30 p.m. tonight at the MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. until 10:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association. 1
