HURON DAILY TRIBUNE, Bad Axe, Michigan Local Obituaries Week of May 21, 2000 Kermit Hartwick Kermit E. Hartwick, 82, of Cass City died Tuesday, May 23, 2000, in his home. He was born March 15, 1918, at home in Sanilac County to Earl and Pearl (Agar) Hartwick. He married Alma L. Spencer on July 28, 1941, in Bowling Green, Ohio. Kermit owned Hartwick Asphalt Paving. He was a life member of the Elf Khurafeh Shrine Temple in Bay City, a 32nd Degree Mason of the Bay City Consistory, the Royal Arch Masons and the Cass City Masonic Tyler Lodge No. 317. He also was a member of the Cass City First Presbyterian Church. Kermit loved traveling, antique cars and tinkering in the garage. Kermit is survived by his wife, Alma; daughters Connie Brink and her husband, Douglas, of Cass City, and Kimberly Smentek and her husband, Thomas, of Irmo, S.C.; grandchildren, Michele Pringle and her husband, Steven, Laura Smentek and Brett Smentek; a brother, Kenneth Hartwick and his wife, Thelma, of Saginaw; a sister, Virginia Greenlee of Argyle; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 27, 2000, at Cass City First Presbyterian Church. Interment will be in the Elkland Township Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Kranz Funeral Home in Cass City, and 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Irene Champagne Irene Elizabeth Champagne, 70, of Saginaw died Tuesday afternoon, May 23, 2000, at her home after a short battle with cancer. She was born Feb. 5, 1930, in Chandler Township at the home of her parents, the late George and Laura (Seigwart) Shaw. She was a 1947 graduate of Elkton High School. On Sept. 9, 1950, she was united in marriage to Robert Champagne at St. Felix Catholic Church in Pinnebog. They lived in Elkton until 1960, when they moved to Saginaw. Irene was a homemaker all her life and was a devoted mother and wife. She loved planting flowers and working in her garden and especially loved playing games with her grandchildren. She was a Nana for a special family in Saginaw for the past 17 years. Irene also was an avid card player and NBA fan. She was a member of St. Stephen Catholic Church of Saginaw. Surviving are her husband, Robert; five sons, Mark Champagne and his wife, Linda, of Davis, Calif., Brad Champagne and his wife, Sue, of Bay City, Gary Champagne of Billerica, Mass., Jack Champagne and his wife, Susan, of Redford, and Troy Champagne of Midland; 11 grandchildren, Craig, Kevin, Cory, Kelly, Ashley, Matthew, Robert, Brian, Kathryn, David and Megan; two sisters, Marge McPhee and her husband, George, of Kinde, and Shirley Murray and her husband, Sam, of Bad Axe; and one brother, George Shaw and his wife, Rita, of Elkton. Lemanski, 92, of Harbor Beach passed away Monday, May 22, 2000, in Courtney Manor, Bad Axe, following a long illness. Born on Aug. 10, 1907, in Harbor Beach, she was the daughter of the late Theophilus and Julia (Novakowski) Pawlowski. She and Sylvester Lemanski were married on Oct. 30, 1937, in Harbor Beach. He preceded her in death on April 10, 1987. Clara was a member of Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach, a member of the Altar Society and a member of the Daughters of Isabella Circle No. 608. She is survived by a son, Dennis Lemanski and his wife, Jean, of Dearborn; a grandson, Travis Lemanski; and two brothers, Frank Pawlowski of Detroit and Bernard Pawlowski and his wife, Rita, of Warren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Rose Dropiewski; and a brother, Theophilus Pawlowski. Mass of Christian Burial took place at 9 a.m. Wednesday, May 24, 2000, in Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church, Harbor Beach, with the Rev. Edward Konieczka, pastor, officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Willard Ellicott Willard Henry Ellicott, 84, of Grant Township near Owendale died Wednesday morning, May 24, 2000, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. He was born Nov. 30, 1915, in Grant Township, son of the late George and Emma (Holshoe) Ellicott. He married Helen Putman on Feb. 17, 1939. He worked production at Michigan Lumber and farmed until his retirement in 1976. He was a member of the Elkton United Methodist Church. He graduated from Owendale High School in 1934. Willard enjoyed gardening, playing cards, spending time with the grandchildren, hunting, ice fishing and was a high school sports fan. He also liked the Detroit Tigers, Red Wings and Lions. He is survived by his wife, Helen; two daughters, Judy Sowden and her husband, Lee, of Owendale, and Joanne Sweeney and her husband, Ron, of Bad Axe; two sons, Frank Ellicott and his wife, Janet, of Mayville, and David Ellicott and his wife, Lesa, of Owendale; 12 grandchildren, Paul Sowden of Pennsylvania, Russell Sowden of Owendale, Susan Sauer and her husband, Dave, of Bad Axe, Pam Peters and her husband, Brian, of Cass City, Kelly Schiable of Bad Axe, Katie Sweeney of Bad Axe, Steven Ellicott of Owendale, Matthew Ellicott and his wife, Julie, of Caro, Timothy Ellicott and his wife, Shannon, of Sparta, Beth Ellicott of Sparta, and Lindsey Ellicott and Sarah Ellicott, both of Owendale; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Irene Neal of London, Ontario, Canada; one sister-in-law, Jean Putman of Owendale; and several nieces and nephews. Mary Kieca Mary Ann Kieca, 69, of Port Austin passed away Sunday, May 21, 2000, at her residence after an apparent heart attack. She was born July 15, 1930, in Detroit, daughter of the late Martin and Violet Sermack. She was married to Lawrence Mistor in 1955 in Detroit. She later married Joseph Kieca. Mrs. Kieca was a parishioner at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin. Surviving are two daughters, Audrey Mistor-Jackson of Northville, and Judith Mistor of El Tortal, Fla.; two granddaughters, Jennifer and Audrey; two sisters, Rose Brzezan and Helen Grabijas; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by four brothers and a sister. According to her wishes, cremation was provided today. A memorial Mass will be offered at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 24, 2000, at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Port Austin. The Rev. Michael J. Bell, pastor, will officiate. Martha Meininger Martha Meininger, 83, of Sebewaing died unexpectedly Sunday morning, May 21, 2000, at Bay Medical Center in Bay City. She was born Aug. 15, 1916, in Bach, the daughter of the late Christian and Florence (Unger) Fuerst. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sebewaing. She also was a member of the Unionville-Sebewaing Senior Citizens organization. Martha was employed at the former Sebewaing Industries, Inc., for more than 30 years before retiring several years ago. Surviving are one daughter, Helen Sontag of Sebewaing; two grandchildren, Mark Sontag and his wife, Sherry, of Sebewaing, and Terri Mihacsi of Gagetown; four great-grandchildren, Darcie Sontag, Stacey Rueger, and Charles and Jennifer Mihacsi; four sisters, Viola Guillett and Lillian Rothfuss, both of Sebewaing, Hannah Armbruster and her husband, Donald, of Allen, and Luella Colvin and her husband, Robert, of Stanwood, Wash.; two brothers, Edward Fuerst and his wife, Lucille, and Wilbert Fuerst, all of Sebewaing; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Elmer Fuerst, Arthur Fuerst and Milton (Whitey) Fuerst. The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 25, 2000, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Sebewaing. The Rev. Charles Kuhl will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church or the charity of the donor's choice. Donna Fritz Donna Luella Fritz, 79, of Owendale went to her heavenly home on Sunday, May 21, 2000. She was born March 6, 1921, at the family home in the Unionville area, the daughter of the late Elmer and Rose (Gotham) Hahn. On Feb. 22, 1941, she was united in marriage to Lester Fritz, Sr., in Bad Axe. They celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary in 1999. He preceded her in death on Nov. 22, 1999. Donna was a devoted member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Linkville. She was the church's custodian for many years, as well as working at Automotive Industries in Owendale. Donna was a passionate, hardworking and spiritual caregiver and homemaker to her family and many friends in the community. She enjoyed family and friends and had a passion for Bible studies. Surviving are six children, Sharyn Rockefeller and her husband, John D., and Janice McKellar and her husband, Garry, all of Gagetown, Lester Fritz, Jr., and his wife, Mary, of Cass City, Marcia Kundinger and her husband, Dale, of Owendale, Van Fritz and his wife, Suzanne, and Lonnie Fritz and his wife, Bobbi Jo, all of Pigeon; 19 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three dear sisters, Mabel Hase of St. Clair Shores, Annabelle Diefenbach of Elkton and Lorelei Holmes of Sebewaing; two dear brothers, Larry Hahn of Sebewaing and Allen Hahn of Unionville; and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and her loving husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Mamie Tabor, Betty Wing and Arlene McCallum; four brothers, Arnold, William, Charles and Franklin Hahn; and a great-grandchild, Kassidy Lynn McHalpine. Stanke, 67, of Harbor Beach passed away unexpectedly Sunday, May 21, 2000, in Mercy Hospital in Port Huron. He was born on July 13, 1932 in Ruth, son of the late Fred and Edna (Isler) Stanke. He and Susan Hagedon were married on May 31, 1952, in Harbor Beach. Walter was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Army. He was a retired employee of 42 years of Hercules, Inc., and Champlain Industries Division of Red Star Bioproducts of Harbor Beach. He retired in 1994. Walter was a member of the Harbor Beach Gun Club and the American Legion Post No. 197 of Harbor Beach. He was an avid golfer and was in the Old Timers League and the Tuesday Nite Golf League of Harbor Beach. He also was a bowler and was in the Monday Night Bowling Association in Harbor Beach for many years. He enjoyed hunting, trap shooting, golfing and playing cards. Walter is survived by his wife, Susan Stanke of Harbor Beach; three sons, Richard Stanke, Robert Stanke and Steven Stanke and his wife, Donna, all of Harbor Beach; two grandsons, Scott and Matthew; two step-grandsons, Andrew and Jimmy; and one sister, Marion Gornowich and her husband, Leonard, of Harbor Beach. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Sue Stanke; and a sister, Betty Gerstenschlager. Sidney Marks Sidney Henrey Marks, 69, of Bad Axe, died Wednesday May 17, 2000 at his home. He was born May 31, 1930 in Bay City, son of the late Ellis and Nellie (Coppinger) Marks. He and Miss Doris (Nelson) Bowers were married March 25, 1963 in Bad Axe. She preceded him in death July 21, 1983. Sid served in the United States Army during WWII in Germany. He worked at Browns Produce for several years. He then worked at Active Industries until his retirement. He worked as a truck driver at Active for more than 30 years. He was a member of the West Branch Moose Lodge, Eagles Club and the American Legion. He enjoyed golf and hunting. Surviving are two daughters, Cindy Jewell and her husband Randell of Vestingberg, and Brenda Owens of Michigan; one son, Brian Marks of Calif.; five grandchildren, Brian Marks, Janell Marks, Derrick Jewell, Deven Jewell and Dorie Jewell; two sisters, Elaine DeGrandt of Bad Axe and Carol Clark and her husband, Don, of Bad Axe; one brother, Richard Marks and his wife Patricia of Bad Axe; several nieces and nephews; and great nieces and nephews. Fisher, 73, of Parisville, passed away Thursday, May 18, 2000 at the Huron County Medical Care Facility after a long illness. She was born on June 9, 1926, in Paris Township, the daughter of the late Leo and Martha (Zurek) Danielski, Sr. Ester was a graduate of the McDonald Country School. She was employed at Clements Wire and Cable of Minden City and Lyntex Manufacturing of Ubly until her retirement. She was a life-long member of St. Mary Catholic Church of Parisville. She enjoyed gardening, music and her home. She loved being with her children and grandchildren. Esther is survived by two daughters, Pastor Darlene A.
