HURON DAILY TRIBUNE, Bad Axe, Michigan Local Obituaries Week of July 23, 2000 Harold Smith Harold A. Smith, 65, of Detroit, formerly of Bad Axe, passed away on Monday, July 24, 2000, at his home in Detroit following an extended illness. He was born on June 20, 1935, in Port Hope, son of the late Harold Schmidt and Helen Bucholtz-Chaplinski. Mr. Smith was a former member of the Caseville Eagles Club. He enjoyed fishing, sports and tending to his flowers. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He is survived by one brother, Gerald Smith and his wife, Shirley, of Bad Axe; and one sister, Betty Zick and her husband, Alfred, of Elkton. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Frederick and Wallace Smith. A private service will take place at the Kaufman Funeral Home in Bad Axe with the Rev. Kenneth Lueke, pastor of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Bad Axe, officiating. Burial will be in Forest Bay Cemetery near Port Hope. Mildred Clabuesch Mildred E. Clabuesch, 99, a retired Sebewaing pharmacist, passed away on Tuesday evening, July 25, 2000, in Lansing. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, July 28, 2000, from Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home, Inc., a Golden Rule Funeral Home, Sebewaing. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. until the time of services at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Norman Rasch Norman Albert Rasch, 79, of Summerfield, Fla., formerly of Unionville, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, July 23, 2000, at the Monroe Regional Hospital, Ocala, Fla. He was born Oct. 1, 1920, in Detroit, son of the late Norman and Alice I. (Davidson) Rasch. On June 20, 1941, he was united in marriage to Maxine Mae Raymond in Fraser. Maxine and Norman had been married for more than 59 years. Norman had been a self-employed carpenter in the Unionville area for many years and also for Michigan State University before retiring and moving to Florida in 1985. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran and a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Summerfield, Fla. Surviving besides his wife, Maxine, are three daughters and a son: Norma Kemp and her husband, John, Karen Davidson and her husband, Donald Krust, Janet Mitchell and William Rasch; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Irene Dembinksi; and a brother, Edward (Horace) Rasch. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 27, 2000, at the Dinkel- Juengel Funeral Home, Inc., Sebewaing, a Golden Rule Funeral Home. The Rev. Charles Kuhl, pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Sebewaing, will officiate with burial in Demorest Cemetery near Akron. Genevieve Dahlke Mrs. Genevieve A. (Talaski) Dahlke, 68, of Bad Axe died Thursday, July 25, 2000, at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor after a short illness. She was born Aug. 12, 1931, in Harbor Beach, daughter of the late Jacob and Mary (Siemen) Roberts. She married Zigmund J. Talaski on March 25, 1947, in Louisville, Ky. He preceded her in death July 20, 1981. She married Chester Dahlke on Jan. 2, 1996, in Bad Axe. She was a devoted wife and mother. She enjoyed reading, traveling, baking, taking rides in the country and spending time with her family and her husband, Chester. She was a parishioner of St. Joseph Church of Rapson and a member of St. Rita's Altar Society of the parish. Genny was a member of VFW Auxiliary No. 9344, a member of the Daughters of Isabella Fidelis Regina Circle No. 608 of Bad Axe, an officer of the Huron County League of Catholic Women and a charter member of the Rapson Sportsman Club. She is survived by her husband, Chester, of Bad Axe; six sons, Jerry Talaski and his wife, Agnes, of Elkton, Randall Talaski and his wife, Nancy, of Valrico, Fla., Alan Talaski and his wife, Sharon, of Brandon, Fla., Andrew Talaski and his wife, LeAnn, of Redford, William Talaski of Bad Axe, and Bryan Talaski and his wife, Amy, of Bad Axe; six daughters, Denise Kern and her husband, Charles, of Port Huron, Debra Glover of Dover, Fla., Donna Peruski and her husband, Gerald, of Bad Axe, Delphine Trepkowski and her husband, Karl, of Bad Axe, Diane Talaski of Wayne, and Dierdre Behnke and her husband, Pat, of Harbor Beach; 24 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two stepsons, Curtis Dahlke of Earlville, Iowa, and Charles Dahlke of Jackson; two stepdaughters, Charlene Benson and her husband, Michael, of Westminster, Colo., and Connie McClure of Beaverton; nine step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; seven sisters, Mary Hartman and her huband, Dick, of Mishawaka, Ind., Ms. June Pawlowski of Ubly, Agnes Petruk and her husband, Joseph, of Hot Springs, Ark., Gladys Page and her husband, Joe, of Davison, Shirley Booms and her husband, Eugene, of Harbor Beach, Bernice Messing and her husband, Marcus, of Peck, and Joyce Pleiness and her husband, Harold, of Port Hope; three brothers, Vincent Roberts and his wife, Leona, of Harbor Beach, Jerome Roberts and his wife, Stephanie, of Las Vegas, and Bernard Roberts and his wife, Doris, of Harbor Beach; and several nieces and nephews and special friends. She was preceded in death by two infant sons, David and Michael; one grandchild; her brother, James Roberts; and two sisters, Rosie Anstett and Anna Winkle. There will be a parish wake service at 8:30 p.m. tonight and a joint rosary with the Daughters of Isabella and the St. Rita Altar Society at 8:30 p.m. Friday at Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly. Visitation will be 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. tonight, from 1 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, and from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the family. Stanley "Tub" Apley Stanley "Tub" Apley, 71, of Clovis, N.M., and formerly of Bad Axe, passed away on Monday, July 24, 2000, at his home in New Mexico following an extended illness. He was born on Oct. 25, 1928, in Bad Axe, son of the late Asa and Nellie (King) Apley. Stanley was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He served in the U.S. Air Force for nearly 25 years, serving in active duty in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He loved the Lord and was a member of the Advent Christian Church of Clovis. He was a lifetime member of both the Disabled American Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a former member of the Clovis Evening Lions Club. He was an active community volunteer in various ball leagues, ARC, Special Olympics and many other organizations. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was well known for his woodworking skills and his award winning sand bill plum jelly and apricot preserves. He is survived by his wife, Nina Jo (Josie) Apley, of Clovis; two sons, Alan Scott Apley of Wylie, Texas, and Joel Leighton Apley and his wife, Lisa, of Knoxville, Tenn.; two daughters, Rebecca Ann Kirby and her husband, William, of El Paso, Texas, and Anna Marie Sprain and her husband, Phillip "Butch," of Knoxville, Tenn.; one stepson, George McCandless; one brother, Wilfred "Moon" Apley and his wife, Susan, of Bad Axe; five sisters, Lorraine Woolner of Port Hope, Bernice "Bid" Schwin and her husband, Ralph, of Sandusky, Alta Gonzales and her husband, Hector, of Muskegon, Marge Kovach of Muskegon and Inez Gerstenschlager and her husband, Alton, of Bad Axe; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and his former wife, Lillian Scott- Apley. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Asa Wallace Apley and Archie Mack Apley; and three sisters, Evelyn Moeller, and Joann and Jean Apley. Funeral services will take place at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, at the Kaufman Funeral Home in Bad Axe. Officiating will be the Rev. Donald Stroud, pastor of the Filion Church of the Nazarene. Lola Chippi Lola Eleanor Chippi, 84, of Cass City died Monday, July 24, 2000, at her home. She was born February 25, 1916, in Sanilac County to George and Ethel (Meredith) Ferguson. She married Frank L. Chippi. He preceded her in death on Dec. 28, 1987. Lola was a Worthy Matron in the Order of the Eastern Star of Decker. She was active in Hills and Dales General Hospital Auxiliary, Cass City VFW Auxiliary and a member of the Senior Citizens of Cass City. She was a member of Deford United Methodist Church. Lola enjoyed playing cards, needlework, bowling, baking and spending time with her family. Lola is survived by her son, Duane Chippi and his wife, Janice, of Cass City; daughter, Darlene Collins and her husband, Don, of Sam Rayburn, Texas; a son, Bradley Chippi and his wife, Susie, of Cass City; a daughter, Sherry Michels and her husband, Greg, of Ortonville; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; her brother, Larry Ferguson and his wife, Marilyn, of Bad Axe; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Frank G. Chippi; and three brothers, Doyle, Ken and Cliff Ferguson. Helen De Smet Helen De Smet, 85, of Kalamazoo and formerly of Minden City, died on Sunday, July 23, 2000. She was born on Feb. 3, 1915, in Detroit, to the late Frank and Bernice (Prokop) Moskal. She married Julian A. De Smet on Dec. 31, 1930, at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Detroit. He preceded her in death on April 24, 1979. She enjoyed reading, gardening, crocheting afghans and embroidering quilts for her family. She is survived by three daughters, Julie Ann Bielat of Kalamazoo, Darlene Stoyka and her husband, Charles, of St. Ignace and Gloria Macker and her husband, Ronald, of Minden City; six grandchildren, Michael Lesnoff of Jacksonville, Fla., Fredrick Bielat of Chicago, Charles Stoyka Jr. of Costa Mesa, Calif., Susan Stein and her husband, Richard, of Schoolcraft, Todd Macker of Harrison Township and Troy Macker of Minden City; three great- grandchildren, Cassandra and Margaret Stein and Cassandra Deanda; two sisters, Frances Alcini of Orlando, Fla., and Sophie Young of Macomb. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Chester, Bernard, Stanley and John Moskal. Mass of Christian burial will be at noon Wednesday, July 26, 2000 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Parisville. Visitation will be from 2:30 to 9:30 p.m. today and from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Smigielski Funeral Home on Cass Avenue in Minden City. Harvey Foote Harvey Edwin Foote, 76, of Sand Point died Monday morning, July 24, 2000, at his home under hospice care. He was born Feb. 22, 1924, in Missouri to the late Stanley and Ellen (Soule) Foote. On Dec. 30, 1942, he was united in marriage to Lola Robinson in Staddard, Ohio. Harvey was a truck driver and worked for Michigan Birch Doors in Mount Clemens, retiring in 1986 after 16 years of service. Prior to that he farmed for many years in Argyle Township. After retirement he and his wife moved to Sand Point. He was known for his crafts and helping his neighbors. Harvey especially loved to fish and hunt. He attended the Elkton United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Lola; two sons, Jim Foote and his wife, Julia, of Argyle and Tom Foote of Argyle; three daughters, Judy Humphrey and her husband, Fred, of Livonia, Ellen Kay Pfaff and her husband, Edward, and Louise Smith both of Argyle; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, George Smith; and one brother, Eugene Foote. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 27, 2000, at the Elkton United Methodist Church. "Butch" Maschke, 59, of Port Hope passed away at his home on Monday, July 24, 2000, following a long illness. He was born in Harbor Beach on Feb. 3, 1941, the son of Bernard "Ben" and Lucille (Bender) Maschke. He was an employee of Thumb Industries in Bad Axe for 29 years. Butch was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Port Hope. Butch enjoyed traveling all of the United States and was interested in NASA and the space program. He is survived by his parents, Lucille and Ben Maschke of Port Hope; two sisters, Linda Howard and her husband, Doug, of Harbor Beach and Myrna Lamb of Davison; nieces and nephews, Becky Block and her husband, Tom, Rhonda Beard and her husband, Rick, Sue and Ed Disher and Kevin Lamb; great nieces and nephews, Travis Irwin, Lindsay and Jamie Beard, Heidi (Koglin) and Noel Disher, Corey, Seanna and Ashley Block; and special friends, Kathy and Rodney Jaskowski. Memorials may be given to Thumb Industries and St. John Lutheran Church. Dale McArdle Dale Henry McArdle, 76, of Westland died Saturday, July 22, 2000, at his home of an apparent heart attack. He was born June 23, 1924, in Chandler Township at the home of his parents, the late Joseph and Louise (Roestel) McArdle. Mr. McArdle moved to the Detroit area in 1961 and worked for Cadillac for more than 20 years, retiring in 1989. Surviving are two daughters, Louise Dinsmore and her husband, Jim, of Sanford and Dale Anderson and her husband, Dave, of Midland; his son, Carl McArdle and his wife, Bonnie, of Marlette; eight grandchildren, Melanie, Darren, Debbie, Carmen, Chad, Nate, Jamie and Keshia; one great-grandchild, Skylar; two brothers, Bob McArdle and his wife, Dorothy, and Leo McArdle and his wife, Elaine, both of Elkton; three sisters, Audrey Galbrith of Jacksonville, N.C., Joan Blome of Pigeon and Bernice Vealey and her husband, Frank, of Weberville; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jim and Joe; and two sisters, Doris Dean and Helen Hyzer. Radabaugh, 60, of Sebewaing died Sunday afternoon, July 23, 2000, at his home following a lengthy illness. He was born Sept. 12, 1939, in Sebewaing, son of the late Chas and Ethel Naomi (Kelly) Radabaugh. He was united in marriage to Sharon Krauss on Sept. 27, 1961, in Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sebewaing. Don had been employed at Sebewaing Industries in Sebewaing for 28 years before retiring due to ill health two years ago. He was a avid fisherman and loved boating and gardening, especially roses. Surviving besides his wife, Sharon, are one son and two daughters, Kevin Radabaugh of Sebewaing, Dawn Jankowiak and her husband, Richard, of Bay City and Terri Wisenbaugh of Capac; seven very special grandchildren, Dana, Jessica and Kimberly Wisenbaugh, Nick Bolzman, Dylan Jankowiak and Kendall and Cody Radabaugh; four sisters; three brothers; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers; and one son-in-law, Lynn Bolzman. As per Don's request, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place at the Sunset Valley Crematory in Bay City. There will be a private memorial service for the immediate family. Memorials may be made to United Hospice in Marlette. Arrangements are being handled by the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing. Arthur Ranville Arthur Wilfred Ranville, 82, of Pigeon died Sunday morning, July 23, 2000, at Huron Memorial Hospital, Bad Axe. He was born Sept. 3, 1917, in Flint to the late Arthur and Rose (Sigman) Ranville. On Sept. 30, 1944, he was united in marriage to Irene Ciborowski in Wayne. Arthur worked for Ford Motor Co. for 24 years, retiring as a supervisor in 1977. After his retirement they moved from Dearborn to Sand Point where he enjoyed fishing. He was an avid golfer. Surviving are his wife, Irene; a daughter, Denise Cwik and her husband, Gordon, of Landrum, S.C.; a son, Gary Ranville and his wife, Janet, of Dearborn; a granddaughter; Renee Wester and her husband, Mike; a grandson, Jeffrey Ranville; two sons, Keith Thibeault of Cheboygan and Gerald Thibeault of Arizona; and a sister, Barbara Snider and her husband, Don, of Grand Rapids. Private funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, July 26, 2000, at the Champagne Funeral Chapel, Caseville, with the Rev. Fr. John Weis officiating. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to St. Roch Church, Caseville. Norman Rasch Norman Albert Rasch, 79, of Summerfield, Fla., and formerly of Unionville, died unexpectedly Sunday, July 23, 2000, at the Monroe Regional Hospital in Ocala, Fla. A complete obituary will appear in Tuesday's edition of the Huron Daily Tribune. Leonard Ziemba Leonard G. Ziemba, 59, of Decker died Saturday, July 22, 2000, in his home. Funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 25, 2000, at St. Michael Catholic Church, Wilmot, with the Rev. Rick Bokinskie and Sr. Ruth Adamites officiating. Pallbearers will be Dennis Ziemba, Jerry Cooper, David Landon, Mike Ziemba, Jay Ziemba and Rich Mika. Burial will be in St. Michael Cemetery, Wilmot. There will be a scripture service at 7 p.m. tonight at Kranz Funeral Home, Cass City. Visitation will be 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Memorials may be made to St. Michael Catholic Church. Michael Leppek Michael J. Leppek, 56, of Harbor Beach passed away Thursday evening, July 20, 2000, at Harbor Beach Community Hospital following an apparent heart attack. Born on Feb. 8, 1944, in Bad Axe, he was the son of the late Michael and Beatrice (Getza) Leppek. On April 1, 1967, he and Mary Ann Messing were married in Warren. Mike was a graduate of the Ubly High School in the class of 1962 and a former Chrysler employee. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War serving in the U.S. Navy. He was most recently employed at Huron Casting in Pigeon and was the financial secretary of the United Steel Workers of America. Mike was a member of Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach. He enjoyed fishing, boating and traveling. He will be missed very much by his family and friends. Mike is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Leppek, of Harbor Beach; two daughters, Sherry Susalla and her husband, Wayne, of Ruth and Rachael Landucci and her husband, Ron, of Golden, Colo.; a son, Al Leppek and his wife, Jennifer, of Ubly; five grandchildren, Joshua and Jennifer Susalla of Ruth, Loren, Sara and Dominic Landucci of Golden, Colo.; one sister, Shirley Smith and her husband, Jerry, of Bad Axe. At Mike's request, cremation has taken place at Sunset Valley Crematory in Bay City and a private family memorial service will take place at a later date. Ramsey Funeral Home in Harbor Beach is handling the arrangements. Ruth Rodriguez Ruth A. Rodriguez, 75, of Sebewaing died unexpectedly, Thursday, July 20, 2000, at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon. She was born Feb. 16, 1925, in Cromona, Ky., daughter of the late William and Alice (Sparks) Russell. She was married to Nester Rodriguez on May 7, 1945. He preceded her in death on July 7, 1987. She had lived in the Unionville area before moving to Sebewaing 12 years ago. Surviving are four daughters, Debra Stupka and her husband, Andy, of Kalamazoo, Carol Smith of Sebewaing, Linda Avery and her husband, Jim, of Caro, Ruth Fritz and her husband, Ron, of Essexville; one son, Rick Rodriguez of Fairgrove; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Gladys Johnson and her husband, J., of Mansfield, Ohio; several nieces and nephews; and her best friend, Richard Priest, of Bay City. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. today, Sunday, July 23, 2000, at the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing. The Rev. Jim Combs will officiate with burial in Columbia Township Cemetery near Unionville. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of the service today at the funeral home. Iola Ross Iola Ross, 80, of Caro died Saturday, July 22, 2000, in her home. She was born Jan. 19, 1920, in Caro to Russell and Gertie (Avery) Curry. She married Richard L. Ross July 26, 1941, in Akron. He died April 25, 1995. Iola attended County Normal and taught school for several years before having children. She was a member of Kingston United Methodist Church, Naomi Circle, Domino Club and Knitting Club. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, sewing and gardening. Iola is survived by her children: Jane Ross and her husband, Jon Christiano, of Essex Junction, Vt., Judy Ross (Arnold Leesy) of Lexington, Richard Ross of Caro; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a stepsister, Opal Hunter of Mayville; a sister-in-law, Emma Ross; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Margaret Curry and Ethel Seddon; and a brother, John Curry. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 25, 2000, at Kingston United Methodist Church with the Rev. Margaret Passenger officiating. Interment is in Indianfields Township Cemetery in Caro. Visitation will be 7 to 9 tonight, 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Kranz Funeral Home in Kingston and 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Clifford Volmering Mr. Clifford Volmering, 56, of Ruth died Wednesday, July 19, 2000, at his daughter's residence. He was born April 9, 1944, in Ruth, son of Theresa (Koch) and the late Alexander Volmering. He married Janet Siemen on Nov. 3, 1962, at St. Anthony Catholic Church of Helena. He was a graduate of SS. Peter and Paul High School in 1962. He was employed at the Ruth Farmers Elevator as a mill operator for 38 years and retired in December 1999. He farmed in Paris Township for years. He was an Insurance Agent for Prime American Insurance Co. He was a parishioner at St. Mary Church of Parisville since 1962 and he was a member of St. Mary's Men's Club. He enjoyed gardening, cards and playing with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Janet, of Ruth; three daughters, Susan Marie Roggenbuck and her husband, Brian, of Harbor Beach, Donna Lynn Glaza and her husband, Douglas, of Bad Axe and Lori Ann Schipinski and her husband, Robert, of Filion; nine grandchildren, Ryan, Melissa and Heather Kramer, Nicholas Roggenbuck, Eric and Ashley Glaza, Matthew, Tyler and Steven Schipinski; his mother, Theresa Volmering; four brothers, Donald Volmering of Petaluma, Calif., David Volmering and his wife, Linda, of Ruth, Daniel Volmering and his wife, Ladonna, of Ruth, and Robert Volmering and his wife, Tammi, of White Lake; six sisters, Janice Morell and her husband, Melvin, of Grand Rapids, Mrs. Mary Lou Pawlowski and her husband, Roy, of Millington, Yvonne Allen and her husband, John, of Flint, Joan Dodd and her husband, Charles, of Chattanooga, Tenn., Louise Morell and her husband, John, of Union Lake and Carolyn Andrews and her husband, William, of South Lyon. Mass of Christian burial will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 22, 2000, at St. Mary Catholic Church of Parisville. The Rev. Stanley Surman, retired former pastor of St. Mary's, will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A rosary service will be conducted at 8 p.m. tonight and a parish wake service will be at 8 p.m. Friday by the Rev. Fr. Stanley Surman at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home of Ubly. Visitation will be from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. tonight, from 1 to 9:30 p.m. Friday and from 11:30 to 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. 1
