Obituaries for the week of December 24, 2000 Sunday, December 24, 2000 Virginia Bachman Virginia A. Bachman, 69, of Port Richey, Fla., died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at her home. She was born June 5, 1932, in Bach, daughter of the late Michael and Pauline (Reher) Schmidt. She married Paul Bachman of Sebewaing on July 29, 1950, at St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church, Pigeon. Surviving besides her husband, Paul, are three sons and one daughter, John Bachman and his wife, Carla, Raymond Bachman of Bay City, Edward Bachman and his wife, Diane, of Houston, Texas, and Debbie Carstens and her husband, Dave, of Lowell; eight grandchildren; sisters Margaret Hamilton and her husband, Floyd, of Pigeon, Caroline Miller of Okeechobee, Fla., Rose Winter of Sebewaing, Nancy Gainor and her husband, Gene, of Bad Axe, Frank Schmidt and his wife, Evelyn, of Sebewaing, and Dale Schmidt and his wife, Lorene, of Flint; sister-in-law Ella Schmidt of Sebewaing; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by brothers Joe, Elmer and Nicholas Schmidt; sister Judy Bock; brother-in-law Edgar Winter; and several infant sisters and brothers. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in New Port Richey, Fla. Pawlowski, 77, of Harbor Beach passed away Friday, Dec. 22, 2000, in Autumnwood of Deckerville following a long illness. Born in Harbor Beach on May 8, 1923, she is the daughter of the late Alfred and Mabel (Ogle) Roberts. She and Allen Pawlowski were married on Nov. 20, 1947, in Harbor Beach. Lois enjoyed the out of doors with her gardening and flowers, walking and being with her family and pets. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Allen (Whitey) Pawlowski of Harbor Beach; two daughters, Kathy Hoffman and her husband, Jeff, of Troy, and Susan Pawlowski of Harbor Beach; two grandsons, Matthew and Stephen; a sister, Ila Kiehl of Bad Axe. She was preceded in death by an infant brother; sisters Cecilla Rollin, Elsie Soule and Eileen Grills; two brothers, James and Harry Roberts. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, at Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach with Fr. Gerald Kukla, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Ramsey Funeral Home in Harbor Beach. Memorials may be given to Our Lady of Lake Huron School. Paul Schave Paul J. Schave, 68, of Port Hope passed away unexpectedly Friday, Dec. 22, 2000, in Harbor Beach Community Hospital. He was born on Nov. 26, 1932, in Port Hope, the son of the late Paul and Beatrice (Hunter) Schave. He and Elsa Zampich were married on June 2, 1962, in Port Hope. Paul was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Port Hope. He is survived by his wife, Elsa Schave of Port Hope; son Robert Schave of Port Hope; three brothers, Ken Schave and his wife, Berny, of Florida, Donald Schave and his wife, Deanna, of Lennon; and Leroy Schave and his wife, Alice, of Port Hope; four sisters, Phyllis Will and her husband, Elwyn, of Lennon, Beatrice Harwood and her husband, Hugh, Doris Kaufman and her husband, Nathan, and Beatrice Smith, all of Port Hope. Paul was preceded in death by his daughter, Pauline Schave, in 1973, and a brother, Lee Schave. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, in the Ramsey Funeral Home in Harbor Beach. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Port Hope. The Rev. Marcella Vegenski Marcella R. Vegenski, 76, of Bad Axe died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at St. Mary's Medical Center, Saginaw. She was born on Nov. 25, 1924, in Lincoln Township. She was the daughter of Josephine (Samelko) and Sylvester Miller. Marcella was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. On Nov. 25, 1944, Miss Marcella Miller and Mr. Michael Vegenski, Sr., were united in marriage. They lived 33 years in Bad Axe. Mr. Vegenski preceded his wife in death on May 27, 1993. Marcella was a homemaker, liked to bake, and enjoyed country-western and Polish music. Surviving are three daughters, Marlene Hammerle and her husband, Elwood, of Bad Axe, Carol Long of Bad Axe and Connie Worden and her special friend, Jeff Lorenz of Bay City; one son, Michael Vegenski, Jr., and his wife, Darla, of Brandon, Fla.; nine grandchildren, Rick Long and his wife, Lynette, of Port Hope, Jeffrey Peyok and his wife, Jenny, of Grandville, Brian Long of Bad Axe, Heather Ziegelman and her fiance, Matt Ryals, of Essexville, Joshua Ziegelmann of Bay City, Melissa Hammerle of Bad Axe, Michael Vegenski III of Brandon, Fla., Katrina Rose Ziegelmann of Bay City and Brandon Vegenski of Brandon, Fla.; two great- grandchildren, Brian Michael Ziegelmann of Essexville and Connor James Ewald of Elkton; four step- granddaughters, Dawn Hogan and her husband, Mark, of Springfield, Mo., Penny Lesperance and her husband, Dave, of New Jersey, Danielle Hammerle of Lansing, and Melanie Mielens and her husband, Alan, of Munger; and two step-great-granddaughters, Kayla Worden and Courtney Mielens of Munger. Wednesday, December 27, 2000 Phyllis Campbell Phyllis Louise (Sawyer) Campbell, 88, of Pinnebog went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe after four years of residency. She was born June 19, 1912, in Hume Township, the daughter of the late Louise (Yageman) and John Sawyer. Miss Phyllis Sawyer and Mr. Otis Campbell were united in marriage on June 21, 1930, in Port Austin. Mr. Campbell preceded his wife in death on June 12, 1984. They were married 54 years and lived in Pinnebog most of their years. Phyllis was head cook at the Pinnebog High School from 1943 to 1945. She was active as a salesperson for more than 30 years, selling Spencer Corsets for 10 years, Stanley Home Products two years, Tupperware for seven years and she was a sales clerk at the Mill End Store in Bad Axe. She also spent three years as a housekeeper for William J. Sovern, founder of Alladin Ready Cut Homes of Bay City. Marvin Terbrack Marvin Terbrack, 77, of Harbor Beach passed away Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at Covenant Medical Center in Saginaw following a short illness. Born in Ruth on Dec. 20, 1923, he was the son of the late John and Cecilia (Booms) Terbrack. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army in Germany. He and Jean Reid were married on Feb. 13, 1965, in Harbor Beach. Marvin was a retired employee of the Booms Silo Co., working for 35 years and retiring in 1984. He was a member of Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach and the VFW Post in Harbor Beach. Surviving are his wife, Jean Terbrack of Harbor Beach; three brothers, Clarence Terbrack and his wife, Delores, of Ruth, John Terbrack of Southgate and Donald Terbrack and his wife, Nancy, of Harbor Beach; six sisters, Evelyn Learman of Harbor Beach, Rita Glaza and her husband, Art, of Ruth, Beatrice Glaza and her husband, Norman, of Hazel Park, Adeline Block and her husband, Jerome, of Ruth, Alice Sadro and her husband, Ken, of Bad Axe and Rosalia Holdwick and her husband, Richard, of Bad Axe; and two brothers-in-law, Frank Sield of Ferndale and Bill Johnson of Detroit. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Herbert, Herman, Gerald and Morris Terbrack; and two sisters, Matilda Johnson and Jeanetta Siedl. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach with Fr. Gerald Kukla, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A parish vigil service will take place at 8 p.m. Thursday in the Ramsey Funeral Home in Harbor Beach. Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. this evening, from 1 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Walter Stark Walter A. Stark, 83, of Decker died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, in Marlette Extended Care Facility. Funeral Mass will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at St. Pancratius Catholic Church in Cass City, with the Rev. Paul Bala officiating. Interment will be in Holy Sephulchre Cemetery, Detroit. Veteran services will be by the Cass City VFW Post No. 3644. A vigil service will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday at Kranz Funeral Home, Cass City. Visitation will be 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, and 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church. Thursday, December 28, 2000 Virginia Pettinger Virginia C. Pettinger, 56, of Snover died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, in Huron Memorial Hospital, Bad Axe. She was born April 29, 1944, in Pontiac to Thurston and Cecelia (Whysall) Herr. She married Ronald Pettinger on April 19, 1964, in Tawas. Virginia worked for General Cable for 23 years, then for Clements in Deckerville for seven years. She enjoyed gardening and helping on the family farm. Virginia liked to knit and attend craft shows. Virginia is survived by her husband, Ronald; children Ronald Pettinger, Jr., and his wife, Cindy, of Snover and Kimberly Crickon and her husband, Todd, of Grayling; a stepdaughter, Cari Baker and her husband, Bob, of Las Vegas, Nev.; grandchildren Rachel and Sara Pettinger, and Andrew, Kandace and Dylan Crickon; two step-grandchildren; brothers Robert Herr and his wife, Linda, of Lake Orion and Thomas Herr and his wife, Katy, of Homosassa, Fla.; a sister, Marilyn Kitakis and her husband, Gus, of West Bloomfield; a brother-in-law, Harold Pettinger and his wife, Velda, of Ubly; a sister-in-law, Ardis Dean and her husband, Wayne, of Bad Axe; and several nieces and nephews. Roberts, 82, of Deckerville died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, at Autumnwood of Deckerville. He was born on April 28, 1918, in Minden City, the son of the late Bernard and Martha (Guiger) Roberts. He married Mavis Stepka on Jan. 3, 1942, at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Freiburg. He attended Minden City High School. He farmed in the Deckerville area until retiring in 1972. He was a life long member of the Ruth Knights of Columbus Council No. 3823. He was a Marion Township Board Trustee for 30 years. He was a member of the St. Patrick's Church Committee and served on the advisory board of Deckerville Hospital for many years. He enjoyed gardening and playing cards. He is survived by his wife, Mavis; four daughters, Betty Cunningham of Frankenmuth, Doris Henige and her husband, Joe, of Thousand Oaks, Calif., Sister Rose Roberts, S.S.J. of Kalamazoo, Marie Graham and her husband, Tim, of Spring Lake; six sons, Fred and his wife, Delores, of Deckerville, Mark and his wife, Patricia, of Deckerville, Gerald and his wife, Debbie, of Frankenmuth, Tom and his wife, Laurie, of Deckerville, Joe and his wife, Debbie, of Eaton Rapids, John of Deckerville; 19 grandchildren; one great-grandson; four sisters, Edna Peters of Palms, Bea Hunt and her husband, Dick, of Palms, Marge Stocker and her husband, David, of Marysville, Fran Swartzendruber and her husband, Donald, of Saginaw; brother-in-law Ralph Halifax of Lexington; sister-in-law Florence Roberts of Ruth. Philippine Overby Philippine Overby, 91, of Altamonte Springs, Fla., formerly of Bay Port, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000. Funeral services will be conducted by the Carey Hand Garden Chapel Home for Funerals in Orlando, Fla. Friday, December 29, 2000 Frederick Banker Frederick L. "Fritz" Banker, 53, of Port Hope passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, at his home following a seven-month-long illness. He was born on May 25, 1947, in Detroit, the son of Bernice (Schave) Smith and the late Frederick D. Banker. He and Brenda Harshbarger were married on May 10, 1985, in Detroit. Fritz retired after 30 years from General Motors in Toledo in 1997. Fred was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Port Hope. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. He is survived by his wife, Brenda Banker of Port Hope; children, Fred P. Banker and his wife, Kim, of Plymouth, Kathy Banker of Northville, Crystall Banker of Port Hope, Randy McComas and his wife, Debbie, of Redford, Joseph Baer and his wife, Kriss, of Detroit, Robert Baer and his wife, Tanya, of Detroit, Gina Thrushman and her husband, Brett, of Westland; 14 grandchildren; mother, Bernice Smith of Port Hope; three brothers, Larry of Warren, Randy of China Township and Tony of Armada; sister, Pamela Banker of Bad Axe. Fritz was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Banker. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, at St. John Lutheran Church in Port Hope with the Rev. Henry Malone, vacancy pastor officiating. A scripture service will be at 8 p.m. today in the Ramsey Funeral Home in Harbor Beach. Burial will be in Marquardt Cemetery near Port Hope. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and 11:30 a.m. until the time of the services at the church. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society. Earl Franzel Earl J. Franzel, 78, of Ventura, Calif. passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at his residence after an extended illness. A memorial mass was celebrated on Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, at Our Lady of the Assumption Church in California. Burial will be private in Spring 2001 at St. Ignatius Cemetery in Frieburg and will be handled by the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home of Ubly. 1
