HURON DAILY TRIBUNE, Bad Axe, Huron County, Michigan Obituaries for the week of December 31, 2000 Sunday, December 31, 2000 Edmund Clabuesch Edmund John Henry Clabuesch, 96, of Pigeon passed away Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at the Scheurer Hospital Long-Term Care Unit, Pigeon. He was born Aug. 15, 1904, in Pigeon, son of Wilhem and Louise M. (Strieter) Clabuesch. He married Corrine E. Martens on Sept. 16, 1926, at Zion Lutheran Church of Ferndale. She passed away Dec. 4, 1993. Mr. Clabuesch was an auto mechanic and worked for the United States government in development of aircraft engines in Detroit and the southern states. Later, he and his wife moved to Fenton where they opened and operated Thursday Island Peat Farm, retiring in 1973. He moved to Country Bay Village in July of 1994. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Berne. He is survived by Frederick Collison of Pigeon, LoAnn Rieman and her husband, Duane, of Sebewaing, William Meyer and his wife, Mildred, of Clinton Township, Alfred Meyer and his wife, Tressa, of Lakeland, Fla., Irene Wangelin and her husband, Earl, of Shelby Township, Johanna Meyer of St. Joseph, Mildred Bahlman and her husband, Richard, of Union City, Louise Wangelin and her husband, Robert, of Ray, Dale Collison and his wife, Neila, of Pigeon, Louanne Sattler and her husband, Gene, of Bay City and a sister-in- law, Mrs. Arlene Kunisch of Sebewaing. He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Frederick Jacob; sisters, Mrs. Sarah Meyer and Mrs. Irma Collison; brother, Alfred Jacob; and nephew, the Rev. Ervin Meyer. The funeral service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 1, 2000, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Berne, with the Rev. James A. Gorsegner, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Assembly of God Cemetery, Sebewaing. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home in Pigeon and from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the service at the church on Monday. Herbert Heider Herbert Clarence Heider, 69, of Sebewaing passed away Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at Huron Memorial Hospital in Bad Axe. He was born in Sebewaing on March 4, 1931, the son of Herbert A. and Alma M. (Spomer) Heider. Mr. Heider served with the United States Army, and was a member of the American Legion, Sebewaing Post No. 293. He worked in the controller's office of Saginaw Valley State University for more than 13 years, retiring in 1993. Mr. Heider was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sebewaing. He is survived by his mother, Alma Heider, of Sebewaing; a nephew, Larry Heider and his wife, Becky; three nieces, Linda Wiltse and her husband, Bob, Ann Zsido and her husband, Art, and Sue Fagan and her husband, Michael; four great-nephews; and two great-nieces. He was preceded in death by his father, Herbert A. Heider; a sister, Sharon Heider; and two brothers, Donald and William Heider. The funeral service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. today, Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sebewaing with the Rev. Albert W. Bahr officiating. Burial will be in the St. John Lutheran Cemetery, Sebewaing. Memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church. Thomas Stewart Thomas E. Stewart, 86, of Harbor Beach died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, of natural causes at Harbor Beach Community Hospital. Stewart was employed by Arnold Powers Typesetting in Detroit for 50 years. He was also a member of Composite Lodge No. 499 F & AM in Grosse Pointe Woods. He is survived by his wife, Ruth; two daughters, Barbara Pesamoska and her husband, Thomas, and Sharon Course and her husband, Gary; three sons, Larry Stewart, Thomas Stewart Jr. and his wife, Joanne, and Gary W. Stewart and his wife, Rosemary; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Margaret Johnson. He was preceded in death by daughter-in-law, Carol Neeried. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2000, at the Cadillac Memorial Gardens East, 38425 Garfield at Clinton River Road, Clinton Township. The Rev. Devin Strong will officiate. Tuesday, January 2, 2001 Grace Dunlap Grace E. Dunlap, 89, of Bad Axe and formerly of Minden City, died on Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. She was born on Aug. 19, 1911, in Verona Township, the daughter of the late Charles and Elizabeth (Golding) Sageman. Miss Grace Sageman and Clark P. Dunlap were married on May 12, 1930, in Pigeon. Clark preceded Grace in death on March 13, 1972. Grace was a 1928 graduate of Bad Axe High School. She graduated from Huron County Normal in 1929. She received a bachelor's degree in education from Central Michigan University in 1969. Grace taught school at Sigel No. 6, Oakland County, Minden City and Ubly Community Schools. She was involved with education for more than 31 years. Grace was also a bookkeeper for 21 years at the Minden City Lumber Company, which she and her husband purchased in 1950. Grace retired in 1975. Mrs. Dunlap was a charter member and past president and treasurer of the Minden City Lioness Club. She was a member of the Sanilac County M & M Extension Club for 30 years. She was a 4-H leader and president of the Minden City Community Clinic Auxiliary. In 1975, she organized the Minden Senior Citizens group, which she operated until moving to Bad Axe in 1986. She was a member of the Sanilac County Council on Aging for many years. Mrs. Dunlap was a member of the Minden City Methodist Church and United Methodist Women where she served in many capacities. She was also a former treasurer of the Huron County Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel. She enjoyed many hobbies, including collecting poetry, making quilts, cross stitching, crocheting, all crafts and playing cards. She enjoyed visiting with family and friends. She is survived by three daughters, Elaine Hass of White Pigeon, Phyllis McQueen and her husband, Clare, of Snover and Betty Binder and her husband, Richard, of Bad Axe; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; five great-great- grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Walter, Alfred, Edwin, Howard and Raymond Sagemen; one sister, Annie Sageman; one son-in-law, Frederick W. Hass Jr. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at the MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe with the Rev. Robert Schock and the Rev. Helen Burns officiating. MacPherson, 44, of Harbor Beach passed away unexpectedly on Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at the Harbor Beach Community Hospital. She was born in Pigeon on Aug. 18, 1956, the daughter of Barbara (Stein) Smith and the late S. Lee Smith. Roxanne and Scot MacPherson were married on July 11, 1980, in Harbor Beach. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Harbor Beach and did volunteer work for the school. She also was a Girl Scout leader and active in the 4-H program. She was working currently at the Harbor Beach Theater. Roxanne is survived by her husband, Scot MacPherson of Harbor Beach; her daughter, Emma Rose MacPherson at home; her mother, Barbara Smith of Harbor Beach; two sisters, Leanne Smith of Kalamazoo and Lynelle Schott and her husband, Matt, of Harbor Beach; her father and mother-in-law, Alfred and Virginia MacPherson of Harbor Beach. Roberts, 90, of Harbor Beach passed away on Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, in the Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe following a long illness. She was born on Feb. 13, 1910, in Harbor Beach, the daughter of the late August and Julia (Hoin) Staroske. She and James Roberts were married in Harbor Beach in 1939 and he preceded her in death in 1965. Adelia was a member of Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach. She is survived by her children, Gary Roberts of Harbor Beach, Walter Roberts and his wife, Diane, of Clio, Carole Pleiness and her husband, Milton, of Harbor Beach and Joseph Roberts of Harbor Beach; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Viola Hill of Bad Axe. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jeanne Cartier in 1995; four brothers, Ed, William, Walter and Irvin Staroske. Marvin Wrubel Mr. Marvin Scott Wrubel, 28, of Minden City died unexpectedly on Friday evening, Dec. 29, 2000, at Detroit Receiving Hospital. He was born on May 21, 1972, in Harbor Beach, the son of Kenneth and Mary Ann (Lemanski) Wrubel. He was never married. He was a 1990 graduate of Ubly High School and attended Oakland University for three years. He worked construction in Huron, Wayne and Macomb counties. He was a member of St. Mary Church in Parisville. He enjoyed sports, fishing and billiards. He is survived by his parents, Kenneth and Mary Ann Wrubel; three brothers, Roger of Caseville, Gary and his wife, Angela, of Essexville and James of Royal Oak; two nieces, Nicole and Ashley Wrubel of Essexville; many aunts and uncles; maternal step-grandfather, George Lemanski of Bad Axe. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Henry and Gertrude Wrubel and his maternal grandparents, Alfred and Evelyn Lemanski. Mass of Christian burial will conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at St. Mary Catholic Church of Parisville. The Rev. Charles Hammond, pastor will officiate. There will be a rosary by the St. Mary's Men's Club at 8 p.m. at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly. Burial will be in the church cemetery in the spring. Richardson, 64, of Decker died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, in Hills & Dales General Hospital in Cass City. A private family funeral service will be conducted at a later date. Wednesday, January 3, 2001 Larry Gwisdalla Larry Gwisdalla, 52, died on Dec. 8, 2000, in Cebu, Philippines, following a short illness. He was born on Jan. 14, 1948, in Minden City to the late Zigmund and Emma Gwisdalla. He attended St. Mary Parochial School in Parisville and Ubly High School. He worked for a short time for Nestles Co. in Ubly. He later moved to Waterford and worked for a construction company as a heavy equipment driver. He is survived by his wife, Elsa; one daughter, Nancy Simerson and her husband, Darrell, of Saginaw; three sons, Joseph Gwisdalla and his wife, Mary Jane, of Davisburg; David of Orange County, Calif. and Eric of the Philippines; three grandchildren, Steven Simerson, Joseph Gwisdalla Jr. and Cammielle Gwisdalla; one brother, Elmer Gwisdalla and his wife, Judy, of Bad Axe; four sisters, Gloria Smalley and her husband, Eugene, of Ubly, Jeanette Gwisdalla of Mount Clemens, Shirley Lewan and her husband, Roger, of Columbus, Ohio, Marge Perakis and her husband, Dean, of Plymouth; one sister-in-law, Joyce Gwisdalla of Ubly. He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Rachel Simerson in 1996, and one brother, Eugene Gwisdalla in 1993. Funeral services and burial were conducted on Dec. 17, 2000, in the Philippines. Mrs. Polk was born on Aug. 8, 1900, in Parisville, the daughter of Jacob and Martina (Wrobel) Gwisdala. She was united in marriage with Dominic Polk on Aug. 17, 1917, in Parisville. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Roseville. Mrs. Polk was employed at Boston Yacht & Sail in Clinton Township as a sail maker. Agnes enjoyed cooking, baking and gardening. She is survived by her sons, Virgil Polk and Leonard Polk of Fraser; daughters, Esther Cylkowski of Clinton Township and Betty Stawicki and her husband, Chester, of Macomb Township; 18 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dominic Polk. A funeral mass took place on Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, at St. Isidore Catholic Church in Macomb Township. The Rev. Fr. Virginia Yonke Virginia Grace (Hessler) Yonke, 71, of Linwood and formerly of Unionville, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, at her residence following a lingering illness. She was born on May 3, 1929, in Detroit to the late Charles and Anna (Detlohf) Sally. She was preceded in death by her husbands, William Frederick Hessler and Edwin Yonke. Thursday, January 4, 2001 Albert Braun Albert "Bert" Braun of Elkton died Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 2, 2001, at his home where he was born 73 years ago, following a brief illness. He was born Feb. 18, 1927, at the home of his parents, the late Albert E. Braun and Laura E. (Tamblyn) Braun Edighoffer. On March 16, 1946, he was united in marriage to Verneita G. Taylor at the Chandler Presbyterian Church. Bert lived and farmed in Chandler Township all of his life, the same farm his father and grandfather farmed before him. It became a Centennial Farm in 1970. Surviving are his wife, Neita; three sons, A. James Braun of Bad Axe, Ed Braun and his wife, Colleen, of Elkton and Duane Braun and his wife, Paulette, of Pigeon; his daughter, Ann Braun of Ubly; five grandchildren, Ed, Jr., Cory, Clint, Stephanie and Kayla; his sister, Grace Krohn and her husband, Warren, of Elkton; in-laws Duane and Lorraine Taylor and Toddy Nicklas of Caseville and Lois Jean Rowlett of Hazel Park. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at the Champagne Funeral Chapel, Elkton. The Rev. Ruth Martin, 83, of Port Huron and formerly of Deckerville, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, in Medilodge of Yale. She was born on Sept. 1, 1917, in Yale, the daughter of John and Margaret (Blasglow) Long. She married Edgar H. Martin on Dec. 21, 1938, in Port Huron. She moved to Deckerville where he was living at the time. She enjoyed her family, worked at various stores in Deckerville and assisted her husband in their Minneapolis-Moline dealership. In 1967 they moved to Port Huron. She is survived by her husband, Edgar Martin; three sons, Robert Martin of Yale, James Martin and his wife, Nancy, of Avondale, Ariz., and Grant Martin and his wife, Jacky, of Croswell; one daughter, Marilyn McConnachie and her husband, William, of Harbor Beach; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ethel Morgan of Port Huron and Mary Mass and her husband, William, of Davison; and two brothers, Alfred Long of Yale and Roy Long of Newport. She was preceded in death by four brothers. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today, Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, in the Apsey Funeral Home in Deckerville. Pastor Andrew Willis will officiate. Burial will be in the Downing Cemetery. Ella Pearl Ella J. Pearl, 68, of Caro died peacefully in her sleep on Jan. 2, 2001, in her daughter's home. She was born on Feb. 3, 1932, in Pontiac to Sidney E. and Mae E. (Callender) Proper. Ella owned and operated Danny's Flowers in Mount Morris for nearly 25 years. She was very supportive of the local schools, churches and veterans. She loved spending time with grandchildren and at the flower shop. Ella is survived by her children, Kimberly Green and her husband, Irwin, of Caro, Daniel Pearl of Clio and Lawrence Kirwan of Albuquerque, N.M.; grandsons Ryan Green and Michael Green, both of Caro; a sister, Emma Peter of Flint; a cousin, Bob Callender and his wife, Dorothy, of Flint; and special friends, Eva McClung and Janet McClung. She was preceded in death by by her parents and a brother, John Proper. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, in the Caro First Baptist Church with Pastor Ronald C. Memorials may be made to the Caro First Baptist Church. Friday, January 5, 2001 Thomas Browell Thomas J. Browell, 71, of Sebewaing died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon following a lengthy illness. He was born April 20, 1929, in Bedford, Pa., son of the late Soloman and Nellie (Swailes) Browell. He was married to Betty Jean Donohue Pobanz on Dec. 19, 1970. He had been employed in the construction trades for Local 1098 in Saginaw for many years before retiring Sept. 30, 1990. Tom had served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Sebewaing and the American Legion Post No. 293 of Sebewaing. Surviving besides his wife, Betty, are three step-sons, one step-daughter and spouses: Donald L. Pobanz of Los Lunas, N.M., David W. Pobanz and his wife, Barbara, of Unionville, Dale V. Pobanz of California, Diana Mae Nelson and her husband, Dale, of Akron; eight step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Gloria Wyborski and her husband, Albert, and Joyce Carcia and her husband, Robert, all of Pittsburg, Pa.; two brothers, Robert Browell of Pittsburg, Pa., and Kenneth Browell of Bradenton, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. As per Mr. Browell's wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Cremation has taken place at Sunset Valley Crematory in Bay City. Arrangements are being handled by the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing. Monte Gordon Monte W. Gordon, 59, of West Palm Beach, Fla., died unexpectedly on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, at his home of an apparent heart attack. He was born Jan. 20, 1940, in Port Crescent, son of Cecilia and the late Jack R. Gordon. Monte served four years in the U.S. Marine Corps. He is survived by three children, Cindy Falck of Gainesville, Fla., Kimberly Trask and Kevin Gordon, both of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; his mother, Cecilia Gordon of Port Austin; four brothers, Peter Gordon and his wife, Nancy, of Tucson, Ariz., Jack Gordon and his wife, Gloria, of Troy, David Gordon and his wife, Kay, and Greg Gordon and his wife, Lana, both of Port Austin; four sisters, Janice Warren and her husband, Robert, of Heber Springs, Ark., Sharon Butterworth and her husband, Tom, of Haverhill, Mass., Debra Schumacher and her husband, James, of Port Austin, and Pamela Finan and her husband, Pat, of Vancouver, Wash. He was preceded in death by an infant sister, Patricia Ann; and his father, Jack. A memorial service took place on Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., followed by a dinner given by his friends at the Moose Lodge in Palm Beach Gardens, where Monte had been a member for several years. Interment will be in Port Austin where a memorial service will take place at a later date. Frances Upton Frances Upton, 94, of Port Austin died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at Huron Memorial Hospital, Bad Axe. She was born Aug. 21, 1906, in Parisville, the daughter of the late Frank and Helen (Schefka) Warczak. Miss Frances Warczak and Mr. Charles Upton were united in marriage on Feb. 14, 1931. She moved to Port Austin in 1959 from Roseville. Mr. Upton preceded his wife in death on Aug. 21, 1940. She was a member of St. Michael's Church. Frances was a beautician for 55 years. She was active in the Senior Citizens Group and a member of the U & I Club. She enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also liked to sew, crochet, knit, quilt, play cards and was a Tigers fan. Surviving are one daughter, Joan Yaroch of Port Austin; two sisters, Gertrude Partika of Port Austin and Edna Hager of Aurora, Colo.; five grandchildren, Miriam Parrone and her husband, Paul, of East Rochester, N.Y., Rebecca Hirn and her husband, James, of Bad Axe, Anne Brown and her husband, Ken, of Grand Prairie, Texas, Elizabeth Yaroch of Ann Arbor and Ellen Yaroch of Bad Axe; seven great-grandchildren, Bridget and Michael Parrone, James Mitchell and Madison Hirn, Addison Brown, and Meghan and Lauren Ordus; and several nieces and nephews. Frances was preceded in death by her husband, Charles; a sister, Margaret Lucik of Arizona; and one son-in-law, Fred Yaroch of Port Austin. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, at St. Michael's Church in Port Austin. Fr. Michael Bell will officiate.
