Gemmell, 85, of Elkton died Friday evening, March 30, 2001, in the presence of her Lord and family at the Huron County Medical Care Facility. She was born on Nov. 13, 1915, the daughter of the late William and Marietta Jarvis in Grant Township. On Dec. 23, 1934, she was united in marriage to Clayton Gemmell at the Snover RLDS Church. Ardis was a lifelong member of the Owendale Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Church, where she often played the piano and organ. Clayton and Ardis farmed in Grant Township for 47 years and then retired to Elkton in July of 1981. She was a member of the Elkton Senior Citizens. Ardis especially enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She also spent many hours caring for the flowers in her yard. Surviving is her devoted husband of 66 years, along with three children; Don Gemmell of Elkton; Lewis Gemmell and his wife, Baraca, of Mio; and Charlene Craig and her husband, Tom, of Pigeon. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, April 2, 2001, at the Champagne Funeral Chapel, Elkton. The Elder Ellis Gardner will officiate with burial in the Grant Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today and after 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral chapel. Memorials may be made to the Owendale RLDS Church or extended services at the Huron County Medical Care Facility. Joanna Knoblock Joanna D. Knoblock, 82, of Dwight Township died Friday, March 30, 2001 at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. She was born on Sept. 20, 1918, in St. Louis, Missouri, daughter of the late Julius and Sophia (Zakizewski) Gembarski. She and Stanley Knoblock were married on Jan. 13, 1940, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin. He preceded her in death on March 25, 1995. Joanna was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin. She is survived by her children, Stanley Knoblock and his wife, Joan, of Warren; David Knoblock of Sterling Heights; Raymond Knoblock and his wife, Debbie, of Sterling Heights, Charlene Knoblock of Westland, and Marlene Hatch and her husband, Mark, of Portage; her son- in-law, John L. Lasceski; and her grandchildren, Marilyn Windorfer and her husband, Jeff, Sheri Andrews and her husband, Mike, Dale Lasceski, Amy Hahn and her husband, Rob, Debby Knoblock, Amanda R. Timothy, Katie Knoblock, and Sean and Eric Hatch; her great- grandchildren, Matthew, Kristine, Jenna, Phillip, LeAnn, and Zoi; and two sisters, Hattie Detkowski of Marlette and Regina Pethers of Ada. Phoebe Lemanski Phoebe Lemanski, 83, life-long resident of Bad Axe, died Thursday, March 29, 2001, at Huron Memorial Hospital in Bad Axe. She was born on Sept. 20, 1917, in Paris Township to the late Andrew and Martha (Peplinski) O'Parka. On April 24, 1937, Miss Phoebe O'Parka and Mr. Edward Lemanski were united in marriage at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Parisville. Mr. Lemanski preceded his wife in death on July 3, 1991. Phoebe was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. She was employed for many years and retired from the Hamill Manufacturing Co. She enjoyed playing cards and shopping. She is survived by her three daughters, Elaine Talaski and her husband, Frank, Joyce Stirrett and her husband, Douglas, and Carol Majeski and her husband, Timothy, all of Bad Axe; one brother, Chester O'Parka and his wife, Jean, of Bad Axe; four sisters, Martha Goniwicha of Harbor Beach, Minnie Bismack of Minden City, Grace Peruski of Ubly, and Beatrice Lemanski and her husband, Victor, of Bad Axe; eight grandchildren, Trudy Gage and her husband, Daniel, of Bad Axe, Tamera Teasdle and her husband, David, of Bad Axe, Todd Talaski and his wife, Dawn, of Bad Axe, Tina Tolitsky of Shelby Township, Traci Warren and her husband, James, of Bad Axe, Thomas Tolitsky of the U.S. Marine Corps, Camp LeJeune, N.C. and Sean and Danay Majeski of Bad Axe; six great- grandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren. Memorials may be offered to the family. Nicholas Miller Nicholas B. Miller, 86, of Decker died Friday, March 30, 2001 in his home. Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. today, April 1, 2001, at Kranz Funeral Home Cass City with James O'Brien officiating. Visitation will be from 2-5 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the United Hospice of Marlette. Victoria Taylor Victoria S. Taylor, 59, of Caro died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, in Covenant Health Care- Cooper, Saginaw. Funeral services were held Saturday, March 31, 2001, at Kranz Funeral Home, Kingston. The Rev. Margaret Passenger of Kingston United Methodist Church officiated. Interment will take place near her father's grave in Ohio. Memorials may be made to the Personal Independence Center. Monday, April 2, 2001 Andrew Kozan Andrew Kozan, 81, died Sunday, April 1, 2001, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Saginaw. He was born on Nov. 10, 1919, in Markage, Saskatchewan, Canada to George and Mary (Molenar) Kozan. He married Lula Mae Ashmore on July 18, 1938, in Napoleon, Ohio. She died on Feb. 20, 1988. Andrew served in the U.S. Army in Germany during World War II, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge. He worked for Nestles, Walbro and retired from General Motors after 17 years. He worked as a Crossing Guard for Cass City School District. Andrew was a member of the Fairgrove VFW Post No. 7486 and was a former commander of the Caro Disabled American Veterans. He served on the Michigan Veterans Trust Fund Board in Caro and the Soldiers and Sailors Relief Fund Board. Andrew enjoyed gardening and woodworking. He enjoyed being Santa Claus in Cass City for many years. Mr. Kozan is survived by three daughters, Margaret A. Czekai and her husband, Gary, of Cass City, Cheryl A. Dost and her husband, Mark, of Beulah, and Frances M. Palmateer and her husband, Carl, of Cass City; three sons, Andrew L. Kozan and his wife, Mary, of Clinton Township, Randy Lew Kozan and his wife, Sandy, of Delton, and Robert J. Kozan of Cass City; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Annie Endres of Beaumont, Calif., and Ethel Salem of Dearborn; two brothers, Joseph Kozan and his wife, Lillian, of Saginaw, and Frank Kozan and his wife, Barbara, of Novell Beach; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Vera Kaytar, Mary Molnar, and Catherine Compton; and five brothers, George Kozan, Vincent Kozan, Lewis Kozan, Jacob Kozan, and Anthony Kozan. Sageman, 79, of Bad Axe, passed away on Sunday, April 1, 2001, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Saginaw following a short illness. He was born on April 29, 1921, in Sigel Township son of the late Joseph and Olga (Reinke) Sageman. He married Gladys Maurer on Jan. 17, 1990, in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. She preceded him in death on Nov. 25, 2000. Mr. Sageman attended the Kipper School, was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Bad Axe Knights of Columbus, and The Disabled American Veterans. He received the Purple Heart while serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. He is survived by four brothers, Winston Sageman of Bad Axe, Wallace Sageman and his wife, Marie, of Bad Axe, Glenn Sageman and his wife, Winifred, of Port Hope, and Earl Sageman and his wife, Mary, of Port Austin; one sister, Harriett Britt and her husband, Kenneth, of Bad Axe; and several nieces and nephews. Williams, 85, life-long resident of Bad Axe, died Sunday, April 1, 2001, at his home. He was born on April 27, 1915, in Morganton, N.C. to the late Thomas Samuel James and Viola (Smith) Williams. On April 5, 1941, Mr. Erwin Williams and Miss Wilma Murdock were united in marriage in Bad Axe. Erwin was employed with Johnson Foods and Fairmont Foods. He farmed and was a self-employed carpenter. He also worked in the coal mines in West Virginia. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and traveling. He was a life member of the Verona-Huron Mason Lodge No. 365, and a member of the Bad Axe First United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Wilma; four daughters, Joanne Renn and her husband, Terry, of Pigeon, Connie Dubs and her husband, Walter, of Elkton, Janette Rumsey and her husband, Lance, of Invergrove Heights, Minn., and Sally Pearl and her husband, Vincent, of Bad Axe; three sons, E. Irene Kessler Irene "Inee" Ruth Kessler, 73, of Kingston, died Saturday, March 31, 2001, in her home. Kranz Funeral Home, Kingston is handling the arrangements. Lyle Lounsbury Lyle Arza Lounsbury, 84, of Cass City, died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at his home west of Cass City. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at Kranz Funeral Home in Cass City with James Halsey officiating. Kranz Funeral Home of Cass City is handling the arrangements. Tuesday, April 3, 2001 Jean Kasserman Jean A. Kasserman, 66, retired Bad Axe school teacher, died Sunday evening, April 1, 2001, at Huron Memorial Hospital following a short illness. She was born Aug. 26, 1934, at the home of her parents, the late Gordon and Isabella (Young) Kasserman in Chandler Township. At age 17, she was struck with polio and spent more than three months in an iron lung. In the mid 1960s, she became a teacher's aid at Elkton Elementary. Three and a half years later she was an aid for the Head Start program in Pigeon. During those years she took college classes and received a bachelor's degree in education from Central Michigan University in 1974. That year she began teaching at the Bad Axe Public School in the elementary grades and later in the secondary grades. Before retiring in June of 1999, she earned her master's degree. She was a life long member of the Chandler Presbyterian Church, the Bad Axe Business and Professional Women and the Huron County Alpha Delta Kappa Teachers Group. She received much pleasure from crocheting, sewing, embroidery and reading. Surviving are her brother, Vernon Kasserman and his wife, Sadie, of Chandler Township; six nieces and nephews; her extended family, Kay and Greg Kingsbury of Bad Axe, and Keith and Stephanie Leipprandt of Caseville; also her special neighbors and care givers, Kandi, Chuck and Kayla McKichan of Bad Axe. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 5, 2001, at the Chandler Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in the Colfax Township Cemetery. Greene Elementary Library or her church. Emma McIntyre Emma L. McIntyre, 87, life-long resident of Huron County, died Monday, April 2, 2001, at Sunny Acres Nursing Center in Colfax Township in Bad Axe. She was born on Oct. 3, 1913, in Port Hope to the late Emil and Frances (Fuhrman) Schelke. On Sept. 25, 1943, Miss Emma Schelke and Mr. Colin McIntyre were united in marriage at the Baptist Church parsonage in Ubly. Emma graduated from Harbor Beach High School and attended Country Normal and Eastern Michigan University. She taught elementary school in Kinde, Port Austin, and numerous country schools. She was a member of the Bad Axe Church of the Nazarene. Emma enjoyed her family, grandchildren, and church activities. She also enjoyed nature, especially watching birds, and rock gardening. She is survived by her husband, Colin McIntyre; one daughter, Faith Deming and her husband, Jim, of Elkton; one son, Duane McIntyre and his wife, Elaine, of Bad Axe; one sister, Esther Perkins of Bad Axe; three grandchildren, Rhonda, Eric and Katie; and one great-grandchild, Hanna. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Beverly Joyce; and three brothers, Alfred, Clarence, and Lawrence Schelke. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 5, 2001, at the MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe with the Rev. Gordon Gossman officiating. Potts, 70, of Harper Woods and Forestville, passed away on Monday, April 2, 2001, at his home in Harper Woods following a short illness. He was born Aug. 3, 1930, in Lincoln Park to the late William and Marion (Haveland) Potts. He was a former singer and entertainer in the Metro area. John is survived by his children, John, Danny, and Jill; one brother, Charles (Bud) Potts of Harper Woods; and three sisters, Marion Houlihan of Southfield, Joanne Johnson of Bloomfield Hills and Sally Mastracci of Brighton. He was preceded in death by one sister, Noreen Caughlin in 2000. Funeral mass will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 5, 2001, in St. John Catholic Church in Forestville with the Rev. Anne Tenbusch Mrs. Anne Tenbusch, 85, of Ruth passed away Monday, April 2, 2001, at Covenant Transitional Care Unit of Saginaw after a courageous battle with heart disease. She was born on Aug. 17, 1915, in Ruth to the late Joseph and Lena (Braun) Schmitz of Huron County. She married Albert Tenbusch on Nov. 27, 1940, at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ruth. After nearly 60 years of marriage, her husband preceded her in death on Aug. 5, 2000. Anne was a graduate of SS. Peter and Paul Elementary School and a life-long parishioner of SS. Peter and Paul Parish in Ruth where she was an honorary member of the Christian Mothers' Society. Anne was a gifted seamstress designing patterns and constructing beautiful clothing. She was also talented in cross stitch, embroidery and crocheting. Her hobbies included baking, gardening, reading, and playing cards. A devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother, Anne is survived by one son, James Tenbusch and his wife, Gretchen, of Bad Axe; five daughters, Diane Godi and her husband, Frank, of Frankenmuth, Judy Matuszewski and her husband, Arthur, of Frankenmuth, Alicia Mazure and her husband, Richard, of Ubly, Peggy Randall and her husband, Harold, of Caro, and Sally Bellsky and her husband, Chuck, of Frankenmuth; one step-son, Joseph Tenbusch of Hale; 17 grandchildren, Mary Birks, Christopher Godi, Michael and Cheryl Matuszewski, Karen Weber, Kevin and Paul Mazure, Becky Goodheart, Jason Cavitt, Matthew and Jordan Randall, David, Thomas and Jennifer Bellsky, Keith, Gregory, and Chad Tenbusch; four great- grandchildren; two brothers-in-law, John Tenbusch of Minden City and Edward Tenbusch of Grosse Pointe; one sister-in-law, Bea Tenbusch of Ruth; and many nieces and nephews. Wednesday, April 4, 2001 Alvin Bittner Alvin Earl Bittner, 78, of Battle Creek and formerly of Elkton, died on Monday, April 2, 2001, at Laurels of Bedford in Battle Creek. He was born on March 8, 1923, in Elkton to the late Gustave and Edna Marie (Errer) Bittner. He graduated from Elkton High School in 1941, where he earned letters for baseball and basketball. In his senior year he was voted most valuable player in both sports. On July 19, 1947, he married Harriet L. Strom in Berrien Springs. Alvin served in the United States Marine Corps for three years during World War II and attained the rank of technical sergeant. He served in the Pacific Theater. He received the Sharp Shooter Medal, the Marine Corps Bayonet, Rifle and Grenade Medal, the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic/Pacific Campaign Medal with two Bronze Stars, the World War II Victory Medal and the Navy Presidential Unit Citation. Alvin was employed as a bus driver with the Pennfield Public Schools in Battle Creek for 10 years and retired from there in 1986. He was also an Elkton village council member from 1964 to 1972, Elkton police commissioner for two years, parks and recreation commissioner for eight years, Oliver Township fire fighter for 28 years, Elkton ambulance driver and attendant for eight years. He was an Elkton Rotarian for 18 years with 15 years perfect attendance, and he was a past president and secretary. He was a charter member since 1946 of the Elkton VFW Post No. 6013 where he was past commander and drill sergeant for 28 years. Alvin was a member of the Elkton United Methodist Church for 22 years where he served as chairman of the board and as a trustee. He ushered for 11 years. He managed a Little League team for eight years and umpired baseball and softball for 29 years. He refereed basketball for two years. He operated the down box for Laker football for 15 years and was president of the Laker Athletic Association for a year. He especially enjoyed driving the school bus for Pennfield Schools athletic teams. He operated the scoreboard at football games at Pennfield until 1994. After retirement, he volunteered at the VA Medical Center in Battle Creek and at the Salvation Army Soup Kitchen. He enjoyed all sports. He especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren perform in sports and band. He is survived by his wife, Harriet L. Bittner of Battle Creek; son Dennis Alvin Bittner of Battle Creek; daughters, Diane Harriet Hawk, and Lorraine Anne Wagley, both of Fort Wayne, Ind.; sister, Ina Holcomb of Thomson, Ga.; brothers, Herbert Bittner of Harbor Beach and Arnold Bittner of Saginaw; seven grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gustave and Edna Errer Bittner; sisters, Vernetta Bittner, Wilma Werner, Betty Lou Stensrud and Hilda Schmidt; brothers, Walter, Richard and Larry Bittner. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 5, 2001, at the Bachman Funeral Chapel on 223 N. Bedford Road in Battle Creek with Pastor Bruce Kintigh of the Christ United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Fort Custer National Cemetery in Ross Township. Frederick Hailer Frederick C. Hailer, 82, of Sand Point passed away on Monday, April 2, 2001, at his home. He was born on July 30, 1918, in Detroit, the son of the late Fritz and Grace (Laesch) Hailer. He graduated from Detroit Denby High School in 1936. He attended the University of Michigan and the Detroit College of Law, where he graduated in 1942. During World War II, Mr. Hailer served in the Philippines with the United States Army. Upon his return from the service, he began his career as a domestic relations attorney with the Friend of the Court in Detroit. In 1973, he was appointed Friend of the Court in the Third Judicial Circuit for Wayne County. He retired from that office in 1977. From 1955 to 1970, Mr. Hailer was an instructor of domestic relations at the Wayne State University Law School. On May 4, 1956, he was united in marriage to Velma "Scottie" Hay in Detroit. The couple moved to the Thumb area seasonally starting in 1966 and began their permanent residence on Sand Point in 1977. Mr. Hailer enjoyed traveling throughout the country in a recreational vehicle, fishing and golf. He was a member of the American Legion and the St. John Lutheran Church in Detroit before his move to the Thumb area. He is survived by his beloved wife, Scottie; son Frederick C. Memorials may be made to the United Hospice Service of Marlette. Thursday, April 5, 2001 Ila Hunt Ila Jean Hunt, 67, of Deford died Tuesday, April 3, 2001, in her home after a long illness. She was born on April 10, 1933, in Cass City to Albert and the late Hannah (Gotts) Neiman. She married Harold S. Hunt on April 14, 1951, in Cass City. They would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this month. Ila worked for Walbro retiring after 40 years. She was a member of the Cass City VFW Auxiliary. Ila enjoyed traveling, quilting, sewing, cooking and listening to old country and western music. Ila is survived by her husband, Harold; her three sons, Jerry Hunt and his wife, Carol, of Meeker, Okla., Daniel Hunt of Harrisonburg, Va., and Donald Hunt and his wife, Sandy, of Webberville; one daughter, Mary Lawson of Deford; one daughter-in-law, Martha Hunt of Shawnee, Okla.; 12 grandchildren, Craig Hunt and his wife, Carrie, LaDonna Leadbetter and her husband, Jim, Shannon Hunt, Brent Hunt, Michelle Hunt, Kurt Hunt, Amanda Hunt, Julie Walls, Carrie Lavielle and her husband, Dustin, Bradley Hunt, Erin Hunt, and Derrick Lawson; three great grandchildren, Austin Lavielle, Colton Lavielle, and Christopher Hunt; two brothers, Wilbert Nieman and his wife, June, of Goessel, Kan. and Clayton Nieman and his wife, Donna, of Freeland; one stepfather, Andrew Donnelly; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by an infant son, Larry J. Hunt; one son, Tom Hunt; and her mother, Hannah Donnelly. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 6, 2001, at Kranz Funeral Home in Cass City with Chuck Emmert of Novesta Church of Christ officiating. Ryan Klein Ryan Sheldon Klein, 18-month-old son of Jeanette Anna Avalos/Shippey of Bad Axe and Patrick Robert Klein II of Hillman passed away Tuesday morning, April 4, 2001, at Covenant Cooper Hospital in Saginaw. Ryan was born on Sept. 28, 1999. He is survived by his step brothers, Jason James, Chance Alexander, and Dalton Andrew; his maternal grandparents, Guy and Terry Shanks/LaPlaunt of Harbor Beach and Juan Avalos of Gagetown; his great maternal grandparents Apolonio and Ella Cantu/Avalos of Pigeon, and Barbara Shanks of Mount Clemens; his paternal grandparents, Patrick and Lilian Klein of Hillman; his paternal great- grandmother, Emma Dice of Hillman; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Visitation is at noon Friday at the funeral home. Friday, April 6, 2001 Alicia Phetteplace Alicia M. Phetteplace, 65, passed away on Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at her daughter's home. She was born on May 26, 1935, in Ypsilanti, the daughter of Frank and Nadine (Bordine) Pennisi. On June 20, 1955, she married Donald Phetteplace in Ypsilanti. He preceded her in death on Sept. 11, 1999. She is survived by three children, Debbie Piskor and her husband, John, of Ypsilanti, Cindy Stefani and her husband, Mike, of Plano, Texas and Scott Phetteplace and his wife, Lynne, of Ypsilanti; four grandchildren, Nick, Zack, Jordan and Matthew; five brothers; and three sisters.
