HURON DAILY TRIBUNE, Bad Axe, Huron County, Michigan Local Obituaries for the week of February 4, 2001 Sunday, February 4, 2001 Laura Priebe Laura I. Priebe, 83, of Sebewaing died early Friday morning, Feb. 2, 2001, at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon following a one-year illness. She was born on Aug. 2, 1917, in Sebewaing, to the late William F. and Matilda (Fuerst) Finkbeiner. She was united in marriage to Carl W. Priebe on Aug. 19, 1939, in Sebewaing. He preceded her in death in 1972. Laura was a member of New Salem Lutheran Church in Sebewaing. Surviving are two grandchildren, Paul Priebe of Arlington, Va., and Lori Priebe of Fairfax, Va.; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Frieda Binder of Hemlock; one brother, John Finkbeiner and his wife, Ruth, of Zilwaukee; one brother-in-law, Arthur Priebe and his wife, Mildred, of Pigeon; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one son, Kenneth C. Priebe, on Jan. 20, 1987; four brothers, Menno, George, Levi and Alvin Finkbeiner; three sisters, Lillian Harder, Emma Dunlop and Martha Kuhl. The funeral service will take place at 4 p.m. today, Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at New Salem Lutheran Church. The Rev. William Mayhew will officiate with burial in St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Sebewaing. Visitation is from 9 a.m. to noon on today at the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing. Memorials can be made to New Salem Lutheran Church. Irene A. Robinson Irene A. Robinson, 87, of Harbor Beach passed away Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, in the Pine Knoll Convalescent Center in Taylor following a brief illness. She was born on June 26, 1913, in Parisville to the late John and Rose (Grates) Daggett. She married Harvey Robinson on Oct. 4, 1933, in Harbor Beach. He preceded her in death on Nov. 13, 1987. Mrs. Robinson was a member of Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach and was one of the original cooks for the nuns of the OLLH School. Irene was a wonderful mother and grandmother and will be missed. Irene is survived by a son, John Robinson, of Flat Rock; a daughter, Arlene Paine and her husband, Pat, of Taylor; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Jim; a granddaughter, Laura Lynn Paine; a sister, Gertrude Pedrotte; and two brothers, Stanley and Clarence Daggett. Funeral mass will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, in Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church, Harbor Beach, with the Rev. John Weiss of St. Joseph Church, Rapson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A parish vigil service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. today at the Ramsey Funeral Home, Harbor Beach. Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Hannah Tanton Hannah Tanton, 93, of Plainwell and formerly of Sebewaing, died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at Plainwell Pines Nursing Center in Plainwell following a brief illness. She was born Jan. 10, 1908, in Sebewaing to the late John Martin and Anna (Nitz) Koch. She was united in marriage to John F. Tanton on Jan. 16, 1932, in Detroit. He preceded her in death on May 4, 1987. Hannah had studied nursing at Harper Hospital in Detroit, graduating as a registered nurse. She was employed at the Pigeon Clinic in Pigeon from 1950 to 1976. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Sebewaing and the American Nurse's Association. Hannah is survived by one son, Dr. John H. Tanton M.D. and his wife, Mary Lou, of Petoskey; one daughter, Elizabeth Faupel and her husband, Kenneth, of Richland; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one son, Thomas Tanton in 1958; an infant sister, Alma Koch; and two brothers, Frank and Elmer Koch. The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing. The Rev. Ray McGee will officiate with burial in the Northlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until the time of service Monday at the funeral home. Monday, February 5, 2001 Elsie Hahn Elsie Martha Hahn, 77, of Cass City died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center in Saginaw. She was born June 19, 1923, in Ashmore to Adolf and Susanna (Becker) Lehman. She married Edward Joseph Hahn on Oct. 5, 1940, in Sebewaing. He died June 3, 1982. Elsie was a real estate salesperson working with her husband. They also grew and sold Christmas trees for 25 years. Mrs. Hahn was the owner of the Pine Cone Shop in Cass City. She was a member of St. Pancratius Catholic Church, the Woman's Council at St. Pancratius, the former Cass City Business and Professional Woman's Club, and Cass City Area Historical Society. Elsie participated in craft shows throughout the Thumb area. She enjoyed auctions, flea markets, traveling, gardening and flowers. She loved to read and passed that love onto her children. Elsie is survived by her children, Jeanne Grossman of Columbus, Ohio, Marguerite Baranek and her husband, Gerald, of Traverse City, Linda Baranek of Cass City, Karen Powell and her husband, Dennis, of Cass City, Brenda Jacobs and her husband, James, of Palm Coast, Fla., Yvonne Nye and her husband, David, of Cass City; grandchildren, Scott Baranek and his wife, Kim, Traci Campbell and her husband, James, Melisa Baranek, Jeff Powell, Paul Powell, Elizabeth Hillaker, Lorn Hillaker; sisters, Frieda Sy of Unionville, Dorothy Sy and her husband, Harold, of Unionville; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Buschbacher, Bertha Hahn and Lucille Hahn; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, Edward Joseph Hahn Jr.; son-in-law, Michael Baranek; brothers and sisters-in-law: Edward Lehman and his wife, Esther, William Lehman and his wife, Elsie; sister, Ida Sivic; brother-in-law, Melvin Sy. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, at St. Pancratius Catholic Church with the Rev. Paul Bala officiating. Interment is in Elkland Township Cemetery in Cass City. Memorials may be made to Rawson Memorial Library or St. Pancratius Catholic Church. Bertha Janke Bertha E. Janke, 94, of Sebewaing died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at St. John Lutheran Church in Kilmanagh. Dinkel- Juengel Funeral Home of Sebewaing is handling the arrangements. Glen May Glen Dale May, 77, of Deford died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001 at Hurley Hospital in Flint. Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Feb. 5, 2001, at Kranz Funeral Home in Kingston with Dr. Philip Rice of Cass City United Methodist Church officiating. Interment is will be in Ellington Township Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Family Discretionary Fund. Tuesday, February 6, 2001 Murel Kilpatrick Murel Kilpatrick, 88, died at her home in Ypsilanti on Jan. 28, 2001. She was born to Mary and James Kilpatrick on July 31, 1912, at Grindstone City. She attended Huron County Normal School before earning a B.A. Degree from Eastern Michigan University and a Master's Degree from the University of Michigan. A distinguished educator whose career spanned 42 years, she began teaching in 1931 in one-room school houses in Huron County. After stops in Marysville and Belleville, she found her long-term home at the Lincoln Consolidated High School where she taught and trained student teachers as a faculty member of the Education Department at Eastern Michigan University. She spent the last 3 years of her career teaching at Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor before retiring in 1973. She was a founding member of the Michigan Council of Teachers of Mathematics and served terms as both vice president and president. After retiring she spent her time between her home in Ypsilanti, the family farm in Grindstone City and her winter home in Lakeland, Fla. She had a passion for teaching, mathematics and American history and was a lifelong avid Detroit Tigers fan. Even with declining health limiting her activities during her past few years, her intellect, humor and spirit never failed. She is survived by a sister, Lottie Parker, of Ann Arbor. She was preceded in death by sisters Stella, Annabell and Essie; and brothers Sherman and Clarence. Services were held at the Muehlig Funeral Home in Ann Arbor on Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, followed by interment at the New River Cemetery in Huron County. Harold Parker Harold Burdette Parker, 87, died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at the University of Michigan Hospital. He was born in 1913 near Owendale. He attended Huron County Normal School and Eastern Michigan University earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree. He taught first in one-room school houses and then at Cass City High School before returning to Eastern Michigan where he earned a Masters Degree equivalent in Industrial Arts. He then taught drafting and industrial arts at Troy High School for 20 years before retiring in 1972. During that time he lived in Berkley and in Troy, where he built the house he and his family lived in for 26 years, before moving to Ann Arbor in 1995. After retiring he spent 21 winters in Lakeland, Fla. where he enjoyed golfing. During his life he devoted much of his time to woodworking, producing many beautiful pieces of furniture and carvings of animals. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Berkley and a member of the Michigan Association of Retired School Persons. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Lottie (Kilpatrick); three children, Barry of Philadelphia, Bonnie Smock of Parma and Rodrick of Ann Arbor; five grandchildren and a great- granddaughter. Also surviving are a sister, Onallee, of Livonia; and a brother, Hazen, of Gagetown. He was preceded in death by a sister, Ella; and brothers Dale, Raymond and Basil. Services were held at the Muehlig Funeral Home in Ann Arbor on Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, followed by interment at the New River Cemetery near Port Austin. Wednesday, February 7, 2001 Winford F. Warner Winford F. Warner, 79, of Pigeon passed away on Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at the Tuscola Medical Care Facility in Caro. He was born on Feb. 7, 1921, in Custer Township in Sanilac County, son of the late Frederick and Ida (Marks) Warner. He married Thelma C. Ford on Jan. 31, 1942, in Sandusky. She survives him. Mr. Warner served with the United States Army during World War II and with the occupation forces in Korea following that war. He worked for Awrey Bakery as a truck driver for 30 years before retiring in 1980. He and his wife, Thelma, moved to Huron County in 1982. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2236 in Pigeon and a former member of the Pigeon Conservation Club. Mr. Warner was a member of Cross Lutheran Church in Pigeon. He is survived by his wife, Thelma; two children, Janet Love and her husband, William, of Pigeon and Dennis F. Warner and his wife, Dawnese, of Canton; four grandchildren, Jonathan, David, Holly and Patrick; a great-grandson, Cody; a sister, Gertrude Peterson of Mayville; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Wilma Warner; and a brother, Ervin Warner. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at Cross Lutheran Church in Pigeon with the Rev. Raymond E. Orth, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery in Winsor Township. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home in Pigeon and from 10 a.m. until the time of service Thursday at the church. Friday, February 9, 2001 James Badgley James Paul Badgley, 26, lifelong resident of Hume Township, died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, due to a car accident in Lake Township near Caseville. He was born on Nov. 25, 1974, in Bad Axe, the son of Daniel and Ruth (Groat) Badgley of Port Austin. James attended North Huron High School in Kinde. James was a member of the Pinnebog United Methodist Church. He enjoyed music and was a member of the band, Broke. He also liked to hunt and socialize with family and friends. He was employed at Tower Automotive in Elkton. Surviving are his wife, Rachael, of Bad Axe; daughter, Angelina of Port Hope; son, James Danyul of Mio; stepdaughter, Dakota, of Bad Axe; parents, Ruth and Daniel Badgley of Port Austin; brother, John Badgley of Kileen, Texas; sister, Megan, of Port Austin; grandfather, Jud Groat of Melvin; special friends, Heather Lapke and Maria Redman; many other friends and relatives. James was preceded in death by his grandparents, Vean and Maleta Badgley and Bernice Groat. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, at MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe. The Rev. Robert Garrett, pastor of the Pinnebog United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Port Austin Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today and 10 a.m. until the time of service Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Pinnebog United Methodist Church. Floyd Moeller Floyd E. Moeller, 82, of Harbor Beach passed away on Wednesday evening, Feb. 7, 2001, in the long-term care unit of Harbor Beach Community Hospital following a long illness. Born in Kinde on Nov. 16, 1918, he was the son of the late Gustav and Matilda (Etzler) Moeller. Ruth Will and Floyd were united in marriage on Feb. 6, 1940, in Harbor Beach. Floyd was a farmer and a retired employee of the NutraSweet Co. and its predecessor, Searle Co., of Harbor Beach. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Harbor Beach. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ruth Moeller, of Harbor Beach; son David Moeller and his wife, Ethel, of Canton; three granddaughters, Kristen Moeller, Kimberly White, both of Holly, and Kelly Mikula of Interlochen; three great- grandchildren. Floyd was preceded in death by a sister, Matilda Jeffery; five brothers, John, Walter, Ernest, Frank and Alvin Moeller. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, in the Ramsey Funeral Home in Harbor Beach with the Rev. Mark Girardin, pastor of Zion Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Rock Falls Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. until the time of services Saturday at the funeral home. 1
