HURON DAILY TRIBUNE, Bad Axe, Huron County, Michigan Local Obituaries for the week of March 4, 2001 Sunday, March 4, 2001 Floyd Byarski Floyd Michael Byarski, 85, of Kinde died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility. He was born on July 26, 1915, in Lincoln Township, son of the late Michael and Mary Byarski. He and Theresa F. Horetski were married Nov. 6, 1946, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Dwight Township. She preceded him in death on Nov. 3, 1994. Floyd was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Dwight. He worked at Spindex in Bad Axe for eight years and farmed in Lincoln Township. He is survived by nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Alice Heilig and Martha Lerash; two brothers, Ben and John Byarski. Funeral Mass will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, March 5, 2001, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Dwight. Burial will be in the church cemetery. There will be a parish scripture service at 7 p.m. today at the Knoblock Funeral Home in Kinde. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church. Sherman Fountain Sherman E. Fountain, 82, of Sand Point passed away Thursday, March 1, 2001, in Lake Placid, Fla. He was born on Sept. 20, 1918, in Millington, Tenn., to the late Maggie and Sherman E. Fountain Sr. He married Marion in Gaylord. She preceded him in death in 1997. Sherman was a retired vice president of manufacturing for Marlette Homes. He belonged to the United Methodist Church in Caseville. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren. Surviving are his son, Bob Fountain, and his wife, Angela, of Sterling Heights; one granddaughter, Angela Fountain; and a grandson, Ryan Fountain. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marion. Per his request, Sherman was cremated. A memorial service will be conducted at a later date. Ilene Holland Ilene Holland, 74, of Sebewaing died Thursday, March 1, 2001, at Bay Medical Care Facility in Essexville after a long illness. She was born on March 15, 1926, in Pigeon, to John and Agnus (Schulz) Fritz. She was united in marriage to Nelson (Jake) Holland on Nov. 28, 1947. He preceded her in death on Nov. 8, 1988. Ilene was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Kilmanagh. Surviving are her children, Terry Holland and his wife, Carol, Thomas Holland and his wife, Janice, Linda Lister and her husband, William, and Timothy Holland and his wife, Teri; 11 grandchildren, two great- grandchildren; brothers, Keith Fritz and his wife, Ruth, of Pigeon, Hazen Fritz and his wife, Arlene, of Pigeon. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Milton Fritz. The memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 5, 2001, at Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing with the Rev. David Lukefahr of St. John's Lutheran Church, Kilmanagh, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Timothy Talaski Jr. Timothy Michael "Digger" Talaski Jr., 4, of Constantine, (near Kalamazoo) passed away Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001, at the University of Michigan Medical Center, Ann Arbor after a short illness. Timothy was born Nov. 12, 1996, in Sturgis, son of Timothy Michael Talaski Sr. and Barbara Bowen. He enjoyed playing with heavy equipment toys, Harley Davidson motorcycles, hunting, fishing, baseball, gardening and loved the outdoors. Timothy is survived by his parents, Timothy Michael Talaski Sr. and Barbara Bowen; three sisters, Sarah, Rebecca an Hannah Talaski; one half-sister, Gemma Harris; one half-brother, Jeff Harris, all at home; grandparents, Thomas and Beverly Bowen of Bronson, Thomas E. Talaski Sr. and Terri Talaski of Filion; several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandmother Veronica Talaski; great- grandmother Mary (Hoody) Bouverette. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, March 5, 2001, at the MacAlpine Funeral Home of Bad Axe with Fr. John Weis of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Rapson, officiating. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. until the time of service Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family. Monday, March 5, 2001 Alfred Schelke Alfred E. Schelke, 82, resident of Sun City West, Ariz., passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001. He resided in Bad Axe for more than 20 years. He was born on Dec. 29, 1918, in Harbor Beach. Alfred was employed by the Kroger Co. as the dairy field manager and retired after 42 years of service. After retirement, he worked in Sun City West for Prudential Real Estate. He was a charter member of the Lord of Life Lutheran Church and past president in Michigan of the Little League, the Lions Club, the Dairy Association and the Dairy Tech Association. He is survived by his wife, Elsie Schelke of Sun City; one daughter, Karen Skipper of New Bern, N.C.; one son, Bob Schelke of Las Vegas, Nev.; two sisters, Emma McIntyre and Esther Perkins of Bad Axe; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; 16 nieces and nephews in Michigan. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m., Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at the Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Sun City West, Ariz. Tuesday, March 6, 2001 Jeffrey Beadle Jeffrey Clay Beadle, 49, a Caseville businessman, died Sunday morning, March 4, 2001, at Scheurer Hospital. He was born on April 23, 1951, at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon to Albertus and Lorraine (Fluegge) Beadle. On April 26, 1986, he and Gloria Marie Pedigo were united in marriage in Caseville. Jeff owned and operated Bert Beadle and Son Excavating since 1992, a business which was started in 1970 by his father. Jeff was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Berne. He enjoyed entertaining friends, hunting, fishing, boating and all of the outdoors. Surviving are his wife, Gloria; his daughter, Antoinette Hughes and her husband, Barry, of Goleta, Calif.; a grandson, Garrett; his parents, Bert and Lorraine Beadle of Caseville; two sisters, Jennifer Stuby and her husband, James, of Franklin, Tenn., and Jill Mellen and her husband, Tom, of Holt; his brother, Jonathan Beadle and his wife, Gayle, of Mount Pleasant; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 7, 2001, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Berne with the Rev. James Gorsegner, pastor, officiating. Memorials may be made to St. John's Church, the Cancer Society or PAWS. Robert Guetlech Mr. Robert F. Guetlech, 78, of Irons passed away on Friday, March 2, 2001, at West Shore Medical Center in Manistee. He was born on Aug. 19, 1922, in Huron County to Gustav and Emma (Rodliff) Guetlech. He grew up in the Pigeon area and graduated from Pigeon High School. On June 28, 1947, he married Vera M. Sarosky in Pigeon and together they owned the Jungle Haven Resort in Irons. Vera preceded him in death in February of 2000. Robert is survived by one son, James Guetlech and his wife, Bonnie Mae, of Irons; one grandson, Robert Edwin; many cousins; and a host of special friends. A memorial service will be conducted at a later date with burial at the Lakeview Cemetery in Irons. Arrangements were handled by the Stephens Funeral Chapel in Scottville. Philipp Iselli Philipp Iselli, 86, of Sebewaing died Monday, March 5, 2001, at Bay Shores Nursing Care Center in Bay City following a lengthy illness. He was born on Feb. 12, 1915, in Yugoslavia to the late Johann and Katharina (Tries) Iselli. He was married to Louise Kreilach on Jan. 5, 1941, in Yugoslavia. He served in the Army during World War II. They emigrated from Germany to the United States on June 23, 1956. They resided in Eastpointe until moving to Roseville in 1963. Philipp was employed at Atlas Tool and Die Co. in Roseville for 15 years before retiring and moving to Sebewaing in 1978. He was a member of New Salem Lutheran Church in Sebewaing and enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. Surviving are his wife, Louise; three sons, Leonard Iselli and his wife, Marianne, of Shelby Township, Ewald Iselli and his wife, Diane, of St. Clair Shores, and Theodor Iselli and his wife, Judith, of Mount Clemens; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Ema Iselli, living in Germany; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 8, 2001, at the Dinkel- Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing with the Rev. James Gorsegner officiating. Burial will be in the New Salem Lutheran Cemetery in Sebewaing. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday and from 9 a.m. until the time of services at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Bernetta Messing Mrs. Bernetta A. Messing, 92, of Minden City died on Sunday, March 4, 2001, at Marwood Manor of Port Huron. She was born on July 11, 1908, in the Helena area to the late John and Elizabeth (Buescher) Booms. She married Frank Messing on Sept. 3, 1929, at St. Anthony Catholic Church of Helena. He preceded her in death on Sept. 10, 1977. She was a graduate of Track Elementary School near Helena. She was a life-long parishioner of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ruth. She was a life-long member and one-time president of the Christian Mothers Sodality and an honorary member of the Daughters of Isabella Fidelis Regina Circle #608 of Bad Axe. Bernetta enjoyed her large family, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was a maker of many quilts. She loved to crochet and do embroidery. She loved to cook, bake and play euchre. She helped many people through their illness and death. She loved her flowers and gardening. She is survived by four sons, Gordon Messing and his wife, Julia, of Carsonville, Norman Messing and his wife, Eleanor, of Carsonville, Marcus Messing and his wife, Bernice, of Peck, and Daniel Messing and his wife, Diane, of Eau Claire, Wisc.; three daughters, Mildred Uhl and her husband, Walter, of Sun City Center, Fla., Sylvia Landon of Wellington, Ohio, and Elizabeth Outlaw and her husband, Norman, of Garden City; 45 grandchildren, 86 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Rosaline Messing of Harbor Beach, Margaret Maurer and her husband, Edward, of Harbor Beach; one brother, Leonard Booms of Harbor Beach; Alphansa Marottikal, daughter by sponsor through the Catholic Near East Welfare Association. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Alice in 1937, and Arlene Ann Roggenbuck on March 24, 1980; one granddaughter, Lisa Messing on Feb. 20, 1972; two great- granddaughters, Veronica Koenig on Oct. 24, 1985, and Tonya Marie Kluger on July 18, 1997; four sisters, Clara Roggenbuck, Loretta Dropieski, Alma Messing, Emma Geiger; and five brothers, Roman, Arthur, Wilfred, Leroy and Bernard Booms. Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 9, 2001, at the SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church of Ruth with the Rev. Donald Eppenbrock, pastor of St. Denis parish in Lexington, officiating. Burial will be in SS. Peter and Paul cemetery. There will be a Christian Mothers Rosary at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, and another rosary will be conducted by the Daughters of Isabella at 8:30 p.m. Thursday. There will be a parish wake service conducted at 7:30 p.m. Thursday by the Rev. Steve Gavit, pastor of SS. Peter and Paul parish. All three services will be at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, from 1 to 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, and from 9 to 10 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Beulah Parker Beulah E. Parker, 84, resident of Bad Axe died Monday, March 5, 2001, at Huron Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. She was born on June 22, 1916, in Bad Axe to James and Fayme (Ball) Leckenby. She attended the Wakefield School and Laker High School. On Oct. 12, 1935, Miss Beulah Leckenby and Mr. Alex Parker were united in marriage in Sarnia, Ontario. Alex preceded her in death on Sept. 18, 1965. Beulah was a homemaker and enjoyed crocheting, quilting, sewing, gardening, and flowers. In the early 1950s, she and Dorothy McArdle owned and operated the Nimble Needle. Surviving are six daughters, Deanna Sommerfield and her husband, Owen, of Lake Ann, Maureen Gail Millgard and her husband, James, of Filion, Charlene McBride and her husband, Philip, of Elkton, Bonnie Gottschalk and her husband, Ralph, of Bad Axe, Lori Parker of Bad Axe, Renee Pulcer and her husband, Larry, of Harbor Beach; nine grandchildren, Jeffery Millgard of Kinde, Pamela Weber and her husband, Duane, of Grindstone City, Sheryl Young and her husband, Glenn, of Kinde, Brian Millgard and his special friend, Carol Koroleski, of Bad Axe, Jennifer Gottschalk of Bad Axe, Todd Gottschalk of Bad Axe, Chrystal Mattocks and her husband, Steve, of Bad Axe, Meghann Pulcer of Harbor Beach, and Lindsey Pulcer of Harbor Beach; five great-grandchildren, April and Kirsten Champagne of Grindstone City, Michael and Bradley Young of Kinde, and Amanda Talaski of Bad Axe; one sister, Dorothy McArdle and her husband, Robert, of Elkton; one sister-in-law, Lucille Leckenby of Texas; and several nieces and nephews. Bergman Sr., 82, retired Pigeon area farmer, died Tuesday morning, March 6, 2001, at Scheurer Hospital. He was born on March 4, 1919, in McKinley Township at the home of his parents, the late Gustave and Ida (Moenter) Bergman. On April 29, 1944, he was united in marriage to Florence Volz at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sebewaing. Edward was a lifetime member of Cross Lutheran Church and was baptized and confirmed there. He went to Big Turner and Cross Lutheran Schools. Ed was a farmer all of his life and still loved gardening in his later years. He also enjoyed fishing. For over twenty years he owned and operated a Resale Antique Shop. He was an associate member of All Saints Lutheran Church in Hudson, Fla. where he and his wife spent winter months. Surviving are his wife, Florence; four sons, Ed Jr. Bergman and his wife, Deb, of Frankenmuth, Roger Bergman and his wife, Lorna, of Vassar, James Bergman and his wife, Brenda, of Gainesville, Fla. and John Bergman and his wife, Julie, of Cass City; two daughters, Norma Hartwick and her husband, Roger, of Millington, and Nancy Mallory and her husband, Rick, of Cass City; 16 grandchildren; 12 great- grandchildren; his sister, Ruth Volz and her husband, Howard, of Winter Haven, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Mary Bergman of Caro; and a brother-in-law, Elmer Voss of Caro. Preceding him in death was his sister, Luetta Voss; his brother, Richard Bergman; an infant sister, Edna; his daughter, Mary Rucher and her husband, Ken; and a great- granddaughter, Miranda Heckroth. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 8, 2001, at Cross Lutheran Church in Pigeon with the Rev. Raymond Orth, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation is from 2 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the Champagne Funeral Chapel in Elkton and after 1 p.m. at the church on Thursday. Memorials may be given to Cross Lutheran Church or to the donor's choice. Harold Proudfoot Harold Proudfoot, 77, died Monday, March 5, 2001, at Tendercare of Cass City following a lengthy illness. He was born on Dec. 12, 1923, in Owendale to the late William and Elminda (Shantz) Proudfoot. Harold was employed at the former Sebewaing Lumber Co. for several years. Later he was employed by the Village of Sebewaing, Department of Public Works, for years before retiring in 1984. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, served on the parsonage building committee, was a trustee and served on several other church offices. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Surviving besides his loving wife of 55 years, Evelyn, are one daughter and son-in-law, Diane Ewald and her husband, Larry, of Pigeon; two grandchildren and their spouses, Robin Oosterveen and her husband, the Rev. Craig, of Roseville, and Gregg Ewald and his wife, Laura, of Jupiter, Fla.; two great-grandsons, Thomas and Tyler Ewald; one brother, Randolph Proudfoot and his wife, Sophie, of Tawas City; one sister, Coralee Nelson and her husband, Richard, of Marine City; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister, Ruth Chappel. The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 10, 2001, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Sebewaing with the Rev. Ray McGee officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Military grave side committal service will be held under the auspices of the Sebewaing V.F.W. Post No. 4115. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. on Friday at the Dinkel- Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing and from 10 a.m. until the time of services on Saturday at the church. The family would like to thank the staff of Brian's House, Heartland Hospice, and Tendercare of Cass City for the loving care they gave to Harold. Jane Rhodes Mrs. Jane A. Goslin Rhodes, 70, of Essexville and formerly of Unionville, passed away Tuesday, March 6, 2001. She was born in Unionville on Jan. 17, 1931, to Alfred and Lottie Fournier Goslin. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bay City, its choir, food pantry, Christian service, and the adoration chapel. Jane was an avid golfer. She was employed with General Motors Corp. Technical Center in Warren and retired after 28 years of service. She then moved to Essexville. She is survived by her brothers, Harold Goslin and his wife, Marge, Keith Goslin and his wife, Marie, all of Gagetown, and Pat Goslin and his wife, Mary Ann, of Unionville; his sisters, Ila Seurynk and her husband, Leo, of Gagetown, Helen Wood of Essexville, Marianne Beebee and her husband, Allen, of Roscommon and Constance Goslin of Sterling Heights; Jane's very special friend, Herbert Stark of Pigeon; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Dorothy Goebel, Felice Vermeersch, Aloysius Goslin, Evelyn Greybiehl and Clarence Goslin. A Memorial Mass will take place at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 9, 2001, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bay City. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of mass on Friday at the church. John Peklo John Peklo, 53, of Bad Axe passed away Sunday, March 4, 2001, at Huron Memorial Hospital in Bad Axe. Funeral services for Mr. Peklo will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 8, 2001, at the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home, a Golden Rule Funeral Home, in Pigeon. Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Thursday, March 8, 2001 Larry Ferguson Larry D. Ferguson, 69, of Bad Axe and formerly of Port Austin died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at Harper Hospital. He was born on May 30, 1931, in Shabonna to the late George and Ethel (Meredith) Ferguson. He and Marilyn Briggs were married on Dec. 12, 1953, in Pontiac. Larry was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during the Korean War, where he was held as a POW. He was involved in many organizations including the American Legion Post No. 499 of Port Austin, the VFW Post No. 116 of Bad Axe, a 50 year member of the Disabled American Veterans, the Port Hope Amvets Post No. 115, and a board member of the Huron County Veterans Trust Fund. He also owned and operated Larry Ferguson's Sales and Service in Pinnebog for 17 years. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Jim Love of Miles City, Mo. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Kenny, Doyle, and Clifton; and his sister, Lola Chippi. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 9, 2001, at the funeral home. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until the time of service on Friday at the Knoblock Funeral Home in Kinde. Gary Gornowicz Mr. Gary Joseph Gornowicz Sr., 58, of Seminole, Fla. and formerly of Caseville died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at his residence. He was born on March 21, 1942, in Detroit to Agnes Gornowicz and the late Lawrence Gornowicz. He married Bertha Hohmann on Feb. 16, 1963 at St. Barnabas in Detroit. He was a graduate of East Detroit High School. He moved to Florida in 1978 from Caseville, where he owned and operated Sand Point Market. He also formerly owned and operated Ebb-Tide Motel on Treasure Island. He was an Air Force Veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church, St. Petersburg, and the Augustus Ruser Jr. American Legion Post No. 273, Madeira Beach. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Bertha; one daughter, Greta Ann Capen and her husband, Douglas, of Seminole, Fla.; two sons, Gary J. Gornowicz Jr. of Tampa, Fla. and George A. Gornowicz and his wife, Carol, of Atlanta, Ga.; four grandchildren; his mother, Agnes Gornowicz of Caseville; and one brother, Larry Gornowicz of Largo, Fla. Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 10, 2001, at St. John Catholic Church in Ubly with the Rev. T.J. Fleming, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the St. Ignatius Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. on Friday and from 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly. Virginia Hartman Virginia K. Hartman, 57, died Wednesday morning, March 7, 2001, at Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe following a lengthy illness. She was born on March 17, 1943 in Sebewaing to the late Robert and Mildred (Carr) Nutt. Virginia and William J. Hartman were united in marriage on June 11, 1960, in Unionville. He preceded her in death on Nov. 16, 1993. She is survived by her two sons, Bill Hartman and his wife, Debbie, of Morrilton, Ark., and David Hartman and his wife, Shawn, of Akron; his grandchildren, Bill, Beth and Barb Hartman of Unionville, Amanda Hartman of Morrilton, Ark., Ben Hartman of Unionville, and Heather Hartman of Fairgrove; six sisters, Ella Glann and her husband, Don, Ruth Graves and her husband, Bob, Kay Lacko and her husband, Jim, Vivian Limberger and her husband, Earl, all of Sebewaing, Teddy Pyke and her husband, Don, of Bad Axe, and Donna Hartman and her husband, Roy, of Akron; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Robert Nutt, Leo Nutt, Kenneth Nutt and Ronald Nutt; four sisters, Patricia May, Betty Zuchnik, Bonnie Fuerst and Martha Karg. The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 9, 2001, at the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing with the Rev. Gordon Burger officiating. Burial will be in the Demorest Cemetery near Akron. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. on Friday. Memorials may be made to the family's discretionary fund. James Lewis James White "Jim" Lewis, 78, of Pigeon and Fort Lauderdale, Fla. passed away Tuesday, March 6, 2001, following a brief illness. He was born in Madison, Wis. on May 7, 1922, to the late James T. and Shirley (White) Lewis. Following his 1940 high school graduation in Madison, and his 1942 graduation from Madison Business College, Mr. Lewis entered the United States Army where he served with the 10th Mountain Division in Europe during World War II. He was a Master Sergeant when honorably discharged in 1945. On July 20, 1946, Mr. Lewis was united in marriage to Gloria Elizabeth Lemmel in Madison, Wis. She survives him. From 1962 to 1984 Mr. Lewis worked for Stow/Davis Furniture Company of Grand Rapids as regional manager serving nine states and Canada. He enjoyed hunting and was a member and founder of the Caseville/Pigeon chapter of Ducks Unlimited, as well as past district director. He was a member of the Audubon Society, the Pigeon Historical Society, and a former member of the Pigeon Lions Club. In Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Mr. Lewis was a volunteer tour guide at Flamingo Gardens. He was also a supporter, member, and a contributor of the National Association of the 10th Mountain Division. Mr. Lewis was a member of the Cross Lutheran Church in Pigeon. He is survived by his wife, Gloria; one son, David Lewis and his wife, Jane, of Pigeon; two daughters, Diane H. Lewis of Westland, and Debra Hoemke and her husband, John, of Howell; five grandsons, Lukas, Ethan, Nick, and Bryce Hoemke, and Trevor Lewis; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his stepmother, Ethel Lewis and his half-sister, Barbara Lewis. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 9, 2001, at the Cross Lutheran Church in Pigeon with the Rev. Raymond E. Orth, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Barbara Maurer Barbara Agnes Maurer, 71, resident of Meade Township, near Filion died Wednesday, March 7, 2001, at Huron Memorial Hospital following a short illness. Mrs. Maurer was born on June 25, 1929, in Santa Cruz, Calif. to the late Alfred "Kelly" and Pearl (Witherspoon) Filion. She was a graduate of Bad Axe High School, class of 1947. On March 1, 1947, Miss Barbara Filion and Mr. John "Jack" Maurer were united in marriage at St. Felix Catholic Church. They were life-long residents of Meade Township. Barbara was employed by the Bad Axe General Hospital in housekeeping, and Hamill Manufacturing Company for 18 years. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, playing cards, casino gaming, and visiting with friends and family. She is survived by her husband, Jack; two sons, John Maurer and his wife, Holly, of Raceland, La., and Steve Maurer and his wife, Kami, of Bad Axe; three daughters, Karen Nieschulz of Bad Axe, Dianne Glaza and her husband, Vern, of Mount Morris, and Sandra Appold and her husband, Dave, of Bay City; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one aunt, Dorothy Gilbert and her husband, Brad, of Pigeon; one uncle, Charles Filion and his wife, Helen, of Applegate; and several nieces and nephews. Barbara was preceded in death by two sisters, Beverly Ayer and Betty Voelker; and a special family friend, June Nelson. Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 10, 2001, at St. Felix Catholic Church in Pinnebog. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A Wake Scripture service will be offered at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at the MacAlpine Funeral Home-Gage Chapel in Kinde. Henry Reige Henry Reige, 81, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at John D. Dingell Veteran's Administration Medical Center in Detroit following a one-year illness. He was born on May 21, 1919, in Croswell to the late Peter and Mary Katherine (Hartmann) Reige. Henry and Dorothy Pobanz were united in marriage on Nov. 7, 1953, in Unionville. Henry was employed at Hengy Ford in Pigeon for 15 years. He later was employed at Don's Body Shop in Sebewaing before retiring 10 years ago. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, in the European African Middle Eastern Campaign and the American Campaign. He also served in Italy and Germany. Henry was a faithful member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sebewaing, served on the board of finance and was an usher for more than 50 years. He also was a member of the Sebewaing V.F.W. Post No. 4115, the V.F.W. Drill Team and the Sebewaing American Legion Post No. 293. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping and gardening. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; two daughters, Kathryn Southworth of Elkton, and Karen Barber and her husband, Ted Jr., of Spring Lake, Nev.; three grandchildren, Kristin Southworth of Elmhurst, Ill., Kelly Southworth of Big Rapids and Kameron Southworth of East Lansing; one brother, William Reige and his wife, Shirley; two sisters, Emily Smith and Emma Schneider and her husband, John, all of Sebewaing; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by two brothers, Peter Reige and David Reige; two sisters, Lydia Dortman, Hannah Sauers; and one son-in-law, Kerry Southworth. The funeral service will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 10, 2001, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sebewaing with the Rev. Charles Kuhl officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A military graveside committal service will take place under the auspices of the Sebewaing V.F.W. Post No. 4115 and the Sebewaing American Legion Post No. 293. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. on Friday at the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing and he will lie in state at the church on Saturday from 11 a.m. until the time of service.
