David was born March 6, 1957, son of Nellie and the late Leroy Hatch. During his life, he attended Michigan School for the Blind in Lansing and graduated from the Michigan School for the Deaf in Flint in 1980. David leaves behind his mother, Nellie; sister, Melissa and the rest of his brothers and sisters and their families; Mark and Pearl, Leroy and Janet, Dean and Trudy, Tammy and Mark, Sharon and Clifford, Mike and Jean and Ken and Charlene. David also leaves behind close friend, Terry Dubs. Preceding David in death were his twin nephew and niece, Joshua and Tiffany Hatch. Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, at MacAlpine Funeral Home-Gage Chapel in Kinde. The Rev. Robert Garrett officiated. Burial was in Port Austin Township Cemetery. Memorials may be offered to the American Diabetes Association. Monday, November 5, 2001 Laura Haley Laura E. "Betty" Haley, 79, of Elkton died Sunday evening, Nov. 4, 2001, at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon following a long illness. She was born June 21, 1922, in Bad Axe to the late George and Mabel (Rapson) Murdock. On April 11, 1942, she was united in marriage to Robert Haley at the Colfax Methodist Church. He preceded her in death on July 31, 1984. Betty lived and farmed with her husband in the Elkton area all her married life. While raising her family, she was very active with FFA and 4-H activities. She was a former member of the Elkton Methodist Church and the Michigan Milk Producers Association. Surviving are two daughters-in-law, Jean Haley of Warren and Carol Haley of Lake Orion; a son-in-law, Leon Kretzschmer of Caseville; six grandchildren; six great- grandchildren; and three sisters, Wilma Williams of Bad Axe, Mary Louise Wickard of Traverse City and Marlene Murdock of Bad Axe. She was preceded in death by all her children, Robert Haley, Gary Haley and Joyce Kretzschmer; and her brother, Harvey Murdock. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001, at the Champagne Funeral Chapel, Elkton. The Rev. William Wright, pastor of the Bad Axe United Methodist Church, will officiate with burial in Colfax Township Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and after 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the Michigan 4-H Foundation, the Michigan Heart Association or the charity of the donor's choice. Edward Zagorski Edward W. Zagorski, 80, of Burton passed away Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001, at Genesys Health Park after a short illness. Mr. Zagorski was born in Kinde on March 7, 1921, the son of Joseph and Sophie (Duda) Zagorski. Edward Zagorski married Virginia Maikrzek on April 19, 1947, in Rapson. She preceded him in death on Jan. 20, 2000. Edward was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, a member of the Knights of Columbus No. 4090, Third Degree, and a member of the Michigan Carpenters Council. He is survived by daughters Susan Orban and her husband, Richard, of West Bloomfield, Mary Graver and her husband, Philip, of Flushing, and son Patrick Zagorski of Burton; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, who called him "Poppy"; a sister, Gertrude Koroleski of Rochester Hills; and many nieces and nephews. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 5199 Richfield Road, Flint. The Rev. Fr. Andrew Czajkowski is the celebrant. There will be a rosary at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Allen Funeral Home, 9136 E. Davison Road, Davison. A joint memorial service will follow at 7:30 p.m. by the Knights of Columbus No. 4090, Third Degree, and the Daughters of Isabella Regina Coeli Circle No. 1095. Visitation will be 6 to 9 p.m. this evening and 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and from 10 a.m. until the time of services Wednesday at the church. Memorials may be made to Habitat for Humanity. Tuesday, November 6, 2001 Jack Armstead Jack F. Armstead, 79, of Bad Axe and formerly of Verona Township, died Monday morning, Nov. 5, 2001, at Courtney Manor Nursing Home in Bad Axe. He was born Sept. 3, 1922, in Verona Township, son of the late James and Jennie (Edwards) Armstead. Jack was a cement contractor for many years. He also enjoyed farming. Surviving is one daughter, Barb Reese of Elkton; four grandchildren, Penny Reese, Amy Reese, Debbie Reese and Dusty Reese, all of Elkton; three great-grandchildren, Derrick, Rebacca and Kyle; and one sister, Gladys Green and her husband, Everett, of Bad Axe. He was preceded in death by his special friend, Eva McMullen; and five brothers, Roy, Cecil, Glen, Don and Lester Armstead. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001, at the MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe. The Rev. Anthony Ferriell of the Bad Axe First Missionary Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Colfax Township Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. today and 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family discretionary fund. Dr. Orville MacAlpine Orville Duncan MacAlpine, M.D., 89, of Asheville, N.C., died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, at Pisgah Manor Health Care Center. A native of Bad Axe, he was a 1940 graduate of Loma Linda University School of Medicine. Following his graduation he served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1941 until 1946, including 13 months in Europe as an Army doctor during the Battle of the Bulge. After his service in the military, Dr. MacAlpine completed his residency in pediatrics from Loma Linda University School of Medicine in 1948. Moving to Asheville in 1949, Dr. MacAlpine started his practice as a pediatrician in the Asheville City Hall until moving to Haywood Road in West Asheville in 1954 where he continued serving the community until his retirement in 1982. Dr. MacAlpine was a member of Foster Seventh Day Adventist Church where he had served as head elder for many years and as chairman of the building committee during the construction of the current church facilities. He was a former member of the Asheville- West Rotary Club for 35 years and had served as their president and on many committees. He was the son of the late Duncan MacAlpine and Christina McTaggart MacAlpine and the husband of Leone Dufty MacAlpine who died Nov. 18, 1999. Surviving are his sons, James Edward MacAlpine of Asheville and Robert Thomas MacAlpine and his wife, Gail Yvonne Anderson MacAlpine of Candler, N.C.; grandchildren Jill and Trent MacAlpine, both of Candler; and a sister, Leola MacAlpine Davis of Indianapolis, Ind. A memorial service will take place at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001, at Foster Seventh Day Adventist Church with Pastor Erin Miller and Pastor William Ambler officiating. Tenbusch, 72, of Harbor Beach passed away Sunday evening, Nov. 4, 2001, at Port Huron Hospital following a short illness. Born in Detroit on July 23, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Hazel (Bamberg) Kanaby. She and Lavern Gentner were united in marriage on Aug. 6, 1949, in SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ruth. Lavern preceded her in death on April 4, 1977. On April 18, 1980, Shirley married Roman Tenbusch in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Parisville. Roman preceded her in death on Oct. 12, 1986. Shirley was a parishioner of Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach, and was a life member of the VFW Parisville Post Auxiliary in Ruth. She was a member of the Euchre Club at the Harbor House in Harbor Beach and enjoyed doing puzzles, card playing and bingo. She is survived by her children, Donald Gentner of Forestville, Ruth Gentner of Harbor Beach, Barbara Halifax and her husband, Charles, of Minden City, Joanne Peyerk and her husband, Kevin, of Richmond, David Gentner of Saginaw, and Mary Homrich and her husband, Dennis, of Kinde; seven grandchildren; and three sisters, Marie Killion and her husband, Buck, of Mount Morris, Dorothy Toruk and her husband, Nick, of Cedarville, and Peggy Messing and her husband, John, of Harbor Beach. The funeral mass will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001, in Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach, with burial in the SS. Peter and Paul Church cemetery near Ruth. The VFW Auxiliary will have a memorial service at 6:30 p.m. and a parish vigil service will take place at 7:30 p.m. this evening at the Ramsey Funeral Home in Harbor Beach. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. today and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Wednesday, November 7, 2001 Laurence Bartle Laurence R. Bartle, 85, of Cass City died Monday, Nov. 5, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center in Saginaw. He was born Feb. 2, 1916, in Cass City to George and Clara (Helwig) Bartle. He married Helen Sharrard on June 12, 1937, in Albion, Ind. Laurence was a beef farmer for many years. He retired from Saginaw Steering Gear after more than 30 years. Laurence regularly attended Salem United Methodist Church and then Cass City United Methodist Church. He enjoyed gardening, watching Tiger baseball and being with his family. Laurence is survived by his wife, Helen; daughters Connie Schwarderer and her husband, Gil, of Cass City, and Kathleen Tuckey and her husband, Roy, of Cass City; grandchildren, Cynthia Lalko, Craig Langmaid and his wife, Donna, Carolyn Costantino and her husband, Alan, and Paul Tuckey; great-grandchildren, Adam Lalko, Russell Lalko, Craig Langmaid and his wife, C.J., Autumn Langmaid, Emma Costantino, Molly Costantino, Samuel Tuckey, Erica Langmaid and Andrea Langmaid; a great-great- granddaughter, Elizabeth Erickson; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Joanne; a grandson, Christopher Langmaid; a great- grandson, David Lalko; brothers Herbert Bartle and Harvey Bartle; and a sister, Luella Ritter. Funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, at Cass City United Methodist Church with Dr. Philip Rice officiating. Interment will be in Elkland Township Cemetery in Cass City. Pallbearers will be Craig Langmaid, Paul Tuckey, Alan Costantino, Russell Lalko, Adam Lalko and Don Ball. Visitation will be 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Kranz Funeral Home in Cass City, and noon to 1 p.m. Thursday at the church.
