Soper, 88, of Detroit, formerly of Pinnebog, passed away July 30, 2001, in Dearborn Heights. She was born on April 2, 1913, to Edward and Ella (Manning) Santhony. She was married to Olen W. Soper on Oct. 21, 1933. Surviving are her two sons: Darrell, of Detroit, and Robert and his wife, Mary Helen, of Detroit; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; one brother; and two sisters. She was preceded in death by two brothers; and two sisters. Cremation took place and the ashes will be brought up to Huron County. Monday, August 6, 2001 - None Tuesday, August 7, 2001 Danny Freeborg Danny A. Freeborg, 52, of Hume Township died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, at Huron Memorial Hospital in Bad Axe. He was born on July 16, 1949, in Flint. Danny and Marci Buckenmyer were united in marriage on July 17, 1981. Danny worked as a security guard for many years. He enjoyed Harley Davidson motorcycles and was a huge University of Michigan sports fan. Surviving are his wife, Marci; one daughter, Becca of Hume Township; one son, Josh of Hume Township; his mother and step father, Geraldine and William R. Miller of Elkton; his father, Louis Turner of Florida; one brother, Larry Freeborg of Arlington, Texas; one nephew, Kyle Freeborg of Flint. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, at the MacAlpine Funeral Home Gage Chapel in Kinde. The Rev. DeWeerd Smith of the Community Wesleyan Church of Elkton will officiate. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 1 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family. Bernice Longuski Mrs. Bernice M. Longuski, 103, of Bad Axe passed away Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility after a short illness. She was born on Nov. 27, 1897, in Parisville to the late Frank and Rose (Schomack) Brazear. She married Bruno Longuski on Oct. 7, 1919, at St. John Catholic Church of Ubly. He preceded her in death on May 1, 1980. Bernice attended St. Mary's Elementary school in Parisville. She was a parishioner of St. Columbkille since 1935, and is an honorary member of the Christian mothers. She lived in Sheridan Twp. since 1937. She did domestic work locally, picked beans and worked on the family farm until 1958. She enjoyed wintering in Florida, gardening and visiting with family and friends. Bernice is survived by three daughters, Florence Vogler of West Bloomfield, Gladys Pickering of Bad Axe, Eleanor Landra and her husband, Cyril, of Homosassa, Fla.; two sons, Eugene Longuski and his wife, Marian, of Cass City, Jerome Longuski and his wife, Linda, of Bad Axe; 18 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Bruno Jr. in October 1953; one grandson, Billy Pickering in 1960; three brothers; four sisters; two son-in-laws, George Vogler and Tim Pickering. Funeral mass will be 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at St. Columbkille Catholic Church of Sheridan. The Rev. Kevin Maksym, associate pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. There will be a Christian Mothers rosary today at 8 p.m. at the Zinger- Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly. Visitation will be from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. today and from 8 to 9 a.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Wednesday, August 8, 2001 Edith Kretzschmer Edith Elizabeth Kretzschmer, 95, of Pigeon passed away Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, at the Scheurer Hospital Long Term Care Unit in Pigeon. Edith Hoppe was born in McKinley Township on Dec. 13, 1905, daughter of the late Charles and Catherine (Bechtel) Hoppe. She graduated from the Turner School in 1920, and Pigeon High School in 1924. She then studied at Bethesda Hospital Nursing School, where she graduated in 1928. On June 24, 1931, she was united in marriage to Walter W. Kretzschmer in Pigeon. He preceded her in death on May 3, 1975. Mrs. Kretzschmer was a registered nurse at Scheurer Hospital for many years. She was a member of the County Extension and Farm Bureau, as well as the Salem United Methodist Church in Pigeon. She enjoyed spending the winters of 1976 through 1994 in Florida. She is survived by a son, Clark W. Kretzschmer and his wife, Gloria, of Mancos, Colo.; a daughter-in-law, June Kretzschmer of Caseville; five grandchildren, David and Tammy Kretzschmer of Charlotte, Catherine and Matthew Riesterer of Brighton, Julie Kretzschmer of Brighton, Gary and Lisa Kretzschmer of Snyder, Texas, and Cheryl and Wayne Hendricks of Gilbert, Ariz.; and seven great-grandchildren, Nathan and Nichole Kretzschmer, Elizabeth and Emily Riesterer, Lauren Hendricks, and Bergen and Peter Kretzschmer. She was preceded in death by a son, Vernon L.; six sisters and seven brothers. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, at the Salem United Methodist Church in Pigeon with the Rev. Michael T. Sawicki, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Grand Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home, A Golden Rule Funeral Home and from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Salem United Methodist Church. Memorials may be made to the Scheurer Hospital Long Term Care Unit. Cathryn McIntyre-Schamel Cathryn A. "Kittye" McIntyre-Schamel of Caseville died Monday evening, Aug. 6, at her home while under hospice care. She was born in Detroit, the daughter of the late Henry and Mary (Houlihan) Clancy of County Clare, Ireland. On Sept. 7, 1940, she was united in marriage to Angus J. McIntyre at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Grosse Pointe. The McIntyres had enjoyed coming to the Caseville area since 1954 and retired here in 1977. Angus preceded her in death on April 29, 1985. On June 17, 1987, she was united in marriage to Clyde Schamel at the University of Notre Dame. They made their home in Caseville in the summer and spent winters in Venice, Fla. She was a member of St. Roch Catholic Church, Caseville Library Club, Caseville Eagles Auxiliary, and Epiphany Cathedral in Fla. Surviving are her husband, Clyde; two daughters, the Rev. Dr. Moni McIntyre, of Pittsburgh, Pa. and Michele Fratarcangeli and her husband, Sandy, of Troy; four grandchildren, Kerry Skidmore and her husband, Jim, Gina Nahabedian and her husband, Rich, Maria and Michael; two great-grandchildren, Jack and Mallory Skidmore. She was preceded in death by six brothers and four sisters. A memorial mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001, at St. Roch Catholic Church in Caseville. The Rev. Joseph Schabel will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. In keeping with her wishes there will be no visitation. The family will receive friends after 10 a.m. on Saturday at the church. Memorials may be given to Sisters IHM, 610 W. Elm, Monroe, MI 48162. Arrangements were handled by Champagne Funeral Chapel in Caseville. Thursday, August 9, 2001 Clarence Horton Clarence W. Horton, 85, of Port Mansfield, Texas passed away Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at River Bend of Grand Blanc. He was born on May 18, 1916, son of the late Clarence W. and Edna Mae (Commings) Horton. He was raised in Caseville and worked on the family farm. On July 20, 1940, he was united in marriage to Kathleen C. Leneway in Caseville. She preceded him in death on June 19, 2001. Mr. Horton served with the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a commercial fisherman for several years, working in Caseville with the Gillingham Fish Company. He also did carpentry work in Caseville and built many homes after moving to Utica in the 1950's. Upon his retirement, he and his wife began building Horton's Patio Furniture, which can be found in many towns in southern Texas. Mr. Horton was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6719 in Raymondville, Texas, as well as a former member of the American Legion Caseville Jean Post 543. He is survived by a daughter, Mary Louise LaLonde and her husband, Keith, of Kalkaska; two sons, Wilmont L. Horton and his wife, Shirley, of Auburn Hills and Peter J. Horton and his wife, Dawn, of Burton; four grandsons, Keith LaLonde and his wife, Tamara, Mike LaLonde and his wife, Vicki, Shane Horton, and Tony Horton; four great-grandchildren, Travis LaLonde, Rachel LaLonde, Kathleen LaLonde, and Alyssa Cathleen Horton; four sisters, Marie MaLone of Blue Springs, Mo., Madilene Marks of Lapeer, Donna Bell Messing and her husband, Clem, of Ruth, and Ula Rae Messing and her husband, James, of Hudson, Fla.; a brother, Larry D. Horton of Grand Haven; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Eva Moore and Thelma Arntz; and two brothers, Lewis Horton and George Emerson Horton. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001, at the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home in Pigeon, with Elder Truman Horton officiating. Burial will be in the Caseville Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today, from 1 to 9 p.m. on Friday, and from 9 a.m. until the time of funeral service at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. Friday, August 10, 2001 Mary Murray Mary Ellen (Shepherd) Murray, 60, of Farmington passed away Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, at her home under Hospice Care. Mary was born on June 1, 1941, to George and Lydia (Rienke) Shepherd. She was married to Bob Murray. He preceded her in death. Surviving are three sons, Ronald and his wife, Connie, Liland, and Orville, all of Detroit; two daughters, Bobby Jo and her husband, Danny, and Bella, all of Detroit; seven grandchildren; eight sisters, Wanda Farbing and her husband, Otis, Marie Carson and her husband, Durrell, Mildred Ropp and her husband, Harold, Elsie Craig and her husband, Jim, Travadon Schave and her husband, Oscar, Beverly Lasceski, Terry Reinke and Atlene Schave; and three brothers, Orlen and his wife, Barbara, Keith and his wife, Diane, Edgar and his wife, Ira.
