HURON DAILY TRIBUNE, Bad Axe, Huron County, Michigan Local obituaries for the week of May 6, 2001 Sunday, May 6, 2001 Richard Dillon Mr. Richard S. Dillon, 69, of Ubly died Friday, May 4, 2001 at Huron Memorial Hospital. He was born Feb. 25, 1932 in Unionville, son of the late Lesley and Elva (Roberts) Dillon. He married Audrey Rutkowski on June 3, 1962 at St. Joseph Catholic Church of Argyle. He was a graduate of the Remington Country School and Gagetown St. Agatha Elementary School. He farmed with his family in the Unionville area. He served in the U.S. Army Korean War from October 1953 to 1955. He was a truck driver locally for C.R. Hunt and other companies. He also was a heavy equipment operator for various road construction companies. He was a former member of the V.F.W. Zurek- Graham Post #6965, a parishioner of St. Ignatius Catholic Church since 1962 and an usher for many years. He enjoyed gardening and mechanic repairs. He also enjoyed visiting with his family and friends and listening to polka music. He is survived by his wife, Audrey, of Ubly; one daughter Denise Gornowicz and her husband, Larry, of Ubly; one son, Brian Dillon of Ubly; three brothers, Bernard Dillon and his wife, Kay, of Cass City; Leonard Dillon and his wife, Lois, of Unionville; Gerald Dillon of Fairgrove; two sisters, Joan Hendrick and her husband, Tom, of Cass City; Jane Kamrad and her husband, Jim, of Birch Run; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lynn Marie, and two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Dillon and Elizabeth Dillon. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 8, 2001 at St. Ignatius Catholic Church of Frieburg. The Rev. Stephen Fillion, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be at the Zinger- Smigielski Funeral Home of Ubly from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. Sunday, from 2 to 9:30 p.m. Monday, and from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday. There will be a parish wake service on Monday at 8 p.m. at the funeral home. John Lackie Jr. John 'Jack' Ernest Lackie Jr., 91, of Elkton died Friday, May 4, 2001, at Sunny Acres Nursing Center in Bad Axe. He was born July 18, 1909 at the home of his parents, the late John and Laura (Schram) in Meade Township. On May 19, 1929, he was united in marriage to Verda Hazard in Detroit. She preceded him in death on June 28, 1995 after 66 years of marriage. Jack was employed at Automotive Industries for over 20 years in Owendale. He also was a manager at Pigeon Manufacturing, starting in the early 1960s, and retiring in 1972. He was a lifetime member of the Masons and attended Wesleyan Church in Elkton. Jack enjoyed visiting with family and friends. Surviving are two daughters: Joyce Fritz and her husband, Willard, of Zepher Hills, Fla., and Shirley Holtzhouse and her husband, Edward, of Caseville; one son: John Lackie and his wife, Janet, of Elkton; seven grandchildren: Kathy, Carol, Diane, Laura, Cynthia, John and Douglas; eight great-grandchildren: David, Darren, Kristy, Lisa, Melissa, Richard, Rebecca and Hannah; and four great-great-grandchildren. Visitation will take place today from 2-9 p.m. at the Champagne Funeral Chapel in Elkton. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, May 7 at the Champagne Funeral Chapel in Elkton. Rev. Monday, May 7, 2001 Arnold Engelhardt Arnold W. "Buzz" Engelhardt, 81, of Sebewaing died on Saturday, May 5, 2001, at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon following a six-month illness. He was born July 24, 1919, in Bay Port, son of the late John E. and Emma L. (Nietzke) Engelhardt. Buzz was a farmer in the Kilmanagh area for many years. He also was employed at the Michigan Sugar Co. in Sebewaing and was a school bus driver for the Unionville-Sebewaing Area schools. He was a life member of St. John Lutheran Church in Kilmanagh. He enjoyed music and played the accordion, piano and organ in local bands for more than 65 years. Surviving are one daughter, Elaine Wildman of Sebewaing; one son, Dennis Engelhardt and his wife, Sharon, of Gagetown; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Florence Kundinger and her husband, Edward, of Sebewaing; two brothers, Orin Engelhardt and his wife, Frances, of Sebewaing, Victor Engelhardt and his wife, Louise, of Au Gres; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby, on Jan. 24, 2001; two sons, Duane and Gary Engelhardt; and one son-in-law, Jim Wildman. The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at St. John Lutheran Church in Kilmanagh. The Rev. David Lukefahr will officiate with burial in the church cemetery in Sebewaing. Visitation is from noon to 9 p.m. today at the Dinkel- Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing and from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service Tuesday at the church. Memorials may be made to St. John Lutheran Church or the charity of the donor's choice. Bernice Koglin Bernice B. Koglin, 70, of Bloomfield Township, died Friday evening, May 4, 2001, at Huron Memorial Hospital in Bad Axe. She was born Dec. 20, 1930, in Dwight Township to the late Robert E. and Ethel (Witherspoon) Gee. On Oct. 29, 1949, Bernice and Edwin Koglin were united in marriage. Edwin preceded her in death on Dec. 1, 1965. Bernice was a member of the former Zion Lutheran Church, a member of the former Trinity Lutheran Church in Bloomfield Township and a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church of Port Hope. She attended Port Hope Schools, Lawitzke Schools and St. John's Lutheran School. She farmed with her husband for many years. She enjoyed playing bingo, embroidery, puzzle books, reading, gardening and flowers. She is survived by one daughter, Carolyn Collings and her husband, Harold, of Filion; two sons, Donald Koglin and his wife, Joyce, of Ubly and Charles Koglin of Filion; two grandchildren, Donald Koglin Jr. of Bowling Green, Ohio and Michael Koglin of Ubly; several nieces and nephews. Bernice was preceded in death by her husband Edwin; one granddaughter, Chandra Koglin; one infant brother, Edward Gee. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at St. John's Lutheran Church of Port Hope with Pastor Henry Malone officiating. Burial will be at Colfax Township Cemetery. Memorials can be made to St. John's Lutheran Church or St. John's Lutheran School. Euleta McComb Euleta A. McComb, 77, of Lewiston died Friday, May 4, 2001, in Otsego Memorial Hospital in Gaylord. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at Kranz Funeral Home in Cass City with Dr. Philip Rice of Cass City United Methodist Church officiating. Tuesday, May 8, 2001 Morgan Ballagh Morgan A. Ballagh, 92, of Country Bay Village in Pigeon, and formerly of Kinde, died Sunday, May 6, 2001, at Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe after a brief illness. He was born Jan. 29, 1909, near Cass City to the late John and Maude (McIllmurray) Ballagh. On Dec. 25, 1936, Morgan A. Ballagh and Miss Lorene Armstrong were united in marriage. Morgan was a graduate of Bad Axe High School, attended Huron County Normal, received a B.S. at Central Michigan University College of Education, and his M.A. at the University of Michigan. Morgan taught school in Alpena and in Huron county, spending 13 years at Kinde public schools where he became High School Principal. Later he became Superintendent of Huron County Schools, retiring in 1973, with a total of 44 years in education. Morgan was a member of the Kinde First Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed many hobbies including gardening and working in the yard, history, reading and traveling as well as being an avid Detroit Tiger fan and spending time with family. Morgan was also a former member of the Lions Club and the Michigan Association of Retired Personnel. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Lorene (Armstrong) Ballagh; one daughter, Rosemary Hill and her husband, Jim, of Essexville; two grandchildren, Anne Hill and her special friend, Chad Sepas and his son Chad of Bay City and Scott Hill of Lansing; one sister, Eva Blaylock of Bad Axe; a sister-in-law, Mildred Ballagh of Three Rivers. Mr. Ballagh was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Leonard Dale Ballagh; three brothers, William, Ralph, and Russell Ballagh; three sisters, Marguerite Thompson, Gladys Wallis, and Edith Ballagh. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at the Kinde First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Tom Beachy, pastor of the Pigeon River Mennonite Church, will officiate. Mary O'Connor Mary Lee O'Connor, 75, lifelong resident of Bad Axe died Monday, May 7, 2001, at Huron Memorial Hospital. She was born July 7, 1925, in Saginaw, daughter of the late Leo and Alyce (Veaque) Thourlby. Mary Lee was a homemaker, an avid reader, and enjoyed ceramics and needlepoint. She was chairperson of the Bad Axe Board of Education for many years. Surviving are two daughters, Molly English of Bad Axe, and Amie O'Connor and her husband, Paul Steckel, of Canandaigua, New York; five grandchildren, Alex, Ryan, Laura, and Anna English, and Alyce Emard; one great- granddaughter, Haylee Emard; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister and brother-in-law, Barbara Ann and Joseph Piorunek. A private funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 10, 2001, at the MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe. Anna Ziegelmann Anna Jane Ziegelmann, 74, of Bad Axe died Sunday, May 6, 2001, at Courtney Manor Nursing Center in Bad Axe. She was born Sept. 24, 1926, in Verona Township to the late Daniel Ernest Reehl and Ina (Townley) Reehl. Anna Jane and Leo Ziegelmann were united in marriage on March 16, 1946, at the Bad Axe First United Presbyterian church. The ceremony was officiated by Manson H. Lowe. Anna was a homemaker and also enjoyed working with ceramics and spending time with her grandchildren. Anna was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Bad Axe. Surviving are her husband, Leo; two sons, Daniel and his wife, Mary, of Bad Axe and Roger of Bay City; three daughters, Judy Joppich and her husband, Chester, of Bay City, Lee Ann Krueger and her husband, Gordon, of Caseville and Bonnie Ziegelmann of Ubly; one brother, Elger Reehl and his wife, Hilda, of Alamo, Texas; three sisters, Betty Scofield and her husband, William, of Maumee, Ohio, Marie Langley and her husband, Willett, of Bad Axe and Beatrice Baker of Cass City; 14 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Martin Reehl; three sisters, Laura Rapson, Dorothy Goff, and Beverly Reehl. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at the First United Presbyterian Church of Bad Axe with the Rev. Jon Dykshoorn officiating. Burial will be in Colfax Township Cemetery. Sommerville, 74, of Cass City died Monday, April 30, 2001, at Hills and Dales General Hospital in Cass City. She was born Oct. 12, 1926, in Detroit. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 11, 2001, at Cass City United Methodist Church with Dr. Philip Rice officiating. Interment is in Mikesville Cemetery in Lake City, Fla. Wright, 84, of Cass City died Monday, May 7, 2001, in Genesys Hospice in Goodrich. Ellen Burns and Pastor John Heims of Argyle United Methodist Church officiating. Interment is in Elkland Township Cemetery, Cass City. Wednesday, May 9, 2001 Victor Kriewall Victor C. Kriewall, 85, of Harbor Beach passed away Tuesday, May 8, 2001, in the Cartwright Center of Saginaw following a brief illness. Born in Port Hope on July 27, 1915, he was the son of the late Ralph and Hulda (Pochert) Kriewall. He and Gertrude Krueger were united in marriage on Aug. 9, 1941, in Harbor Beach. She preceded him in death on May 27, 1997. He was the owner and operator of the Rubicon Evergreens and Shrubs of Harbor Beach for many years. Victor was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Port Hope. He was a member of Michigan Nurseryman's Association and attended he Michigan State University. He is survived by a daughter, Cherye Krueger and her husband, Lee, of Auburn; a son, Dale Kriewall and his wife, Shelly, of Avon, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Jeff, Kim, Trevor, and Becky; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, John Kriewall and his wife, Marla, of Port Hope and Art Kriewall and his wife, Sharon, of Bridgeton, Mo.; a sister, Otilia Sonic of Harbor Beach; and a sister-in-law, Valenda Kriewall of LaGrange, Ill. Victor was preceded in death by a brother, William Kriewall. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 12, 2001, at St. John Lutheran Church in Port Hope with the Rev. Loretta Ypma Loretta Delores Ypma, 81, of Cass City died Monday, May 7, 2001, at Hills and Dales General Hospital. Funeral services will be conducted at 7 tonight, May 9, 2001, at Kranz Funeral Home in Cass City with the Rev. Paul Bala of St. Pancratius Catholic Church officiating. Thursday, May 10, 2001 Frances Flannery Frances Flora (McLeod) Flannery, 92, died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. She was born on Aug. 22, 1908, in Greenleaf Township, to the late Angus and Frances (McIntyre) McLeod. On June 25, 1932, Miss Frances McLeod and Mr. Leo Flannery were united in marriage. Frances was a homemaker, and enjoyed reading, cross stitching, and crossword puzzles. Surviving are one son, Patrick Richard Flannery and his wife, Pamela, of Traverse City; three daughters, Mary Docas (Flannery) Tulloch and her husband, Dr. John Tulloch, of Grosse Pointe, Frances Anne Esckilsen of Jackson, and Honora (Flannery) Gilmore and her husband, Thomas, of St. Clair Shores; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Frances was preceded in death by her husband, Leo Flannery; two sisters, Dorcas McLeod and Flora McIntosh; and two brothers, Angus McLeod and Duncan McLeod. A graveside burial service was conducted on April 10, 2001. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 12, 2001, at St. Columbkille Catholic Church, with Father T. J. Jacob Hessling Jacob Matthew Hessling, infant son of Amber (Schelke) and Jason Hessling of Filion, was received into the loving arms of God shortly after birth on Monday, May 7, 2001. He was born on May 7, 2001, at Covenant Medical Center - Harrison Campus in Saginaw. Jacob is survived by his parents, Amber and Jason Hessling of Filion; his twin brother, Sean David Hessling; maternal grandparents, David and Irene Schelke of Harbor Beach; paternal grandparents, Marvin and Patricia Hessling of Harbor Beach; his maternal great-grandmother, Florence Schelke of Harbor Beach; his paternal great- grandparents, Harry and Josephine Kozlowski of Port Austin. A private family funeral service will take place on Friday, May 11, 2001, at Zion Lutheran Church in Harbor Beach with the Rev. Mark Girardin, pastor officiating. Florian Particka Mr. Florian "Floyd" Joseph Particka, 81, of Ubly died Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at Bon Secours Hospital of Grosse Pointe, following a short illness. He was born Oct. 16, 1919, in Rapson, son of the late Frank M. and Anna (Goniwiecha) Particka. He married Margaret Rossi on Nov. 5, 1949 in Detroit. She preceded him in death on June 20, 1974. He married Irene Marquardt on April 20, 1979, in Sandusky at Peace Lutheran Church. He attended the country school. He farmed in the Huron County area. He moved to Detroit and lived there until 1962 when he and his wife moved to Ubly. While in Detroit he was a carpenter. He built homes in the Detroit area and in Huron county. He was a lifelong parishioner of St. John Catholic Church of Ubly. He was an avid gardener and collector and loved to fish, play cards, hunt and travel. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Irene; three daughters, Patricia Evans and her husband, Clayton, of Ubly, Sharon Particka of Minneapolis, Minn., Linda Williams and her special friend, Art Kramer, of Nashville, Tenn.; three sons, Mike and his special friend, Dee Dee Niebel, of Pigeon, Joseph and his wife, Marlene, of Ubly, James and his wife, Chona, of San Diego, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Judi Martin and her husband, Kevin, of Croswell and Sheryl Gabara and her husband, Dale, of Sandusky; one stepson, Duane Marquardt and his wife, Barbara, of Carsonville; six grandchildren, Richard Glaza, Stephanie Wood, Jason Particka, Kimberly Jones, Bryan and Glenn Particka; two great-grandchildren, Samantha Wood and Tyler Jones; seven step grandchildren, Derek and Brent Marquardt, Chris Gibson, Shanna Turnbull, Jennifer Gabara, Kevin Martin Jr., Teresa Winiarski; three step great-grandchildren, Michailla Gibson, Kaitlyn Turnbull and Morgan Winiarski; two brothers, Alex Particka and his special friend, June, of Ubly and Frank Particka Jr. and his wife, Donna, of Ubly; five sisters-in-law, Matilda Ginther and her husband, Steve, of Elkton, Regina Smith of Bad Axe, Rose Volz of Sebewaing, Lena MacCullum of Sebewaing, Mary McFadden of Garden City; one brother-in-law, Anthony Lamarra of Capac; one aunt, Josephine Rosinski of Davison; and many nieces and nephews. A parish wake service will be at 8 p.m. on Friday at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home of Ubly. Visitation is from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday, from 1 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday and from 8 to 9 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Sleeper Public Library or the American Heart Association. Friday, May 11, 2001 Ann Thiel Ann Eleanor Thiel, 81, of Bad Axe passed away on Dec. 12, 2000. The burial service will be at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 12, 2001, at St. Joseph Cemetery, 3455 Rapson Road, in Rapson. Fr. John Weis of St. Joseph Church will officiate. A meal will follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association. 1
