Local Obituaries for the week of April 8, 2001 Sunday, April 8, 2001 Sherman Fountain Sherman E. Fountain, 82, of Sand Point, passed away Thursday March, 1, 2001, in Lake Placid, Fla. He was born on Sept. 20, 1918 in Millington Tenn., to the late Maggie and Sherman E. Fountain, Sr. He married Marion in Gaylord. she preceded him in death in 1997. Sherman was a retired vice president of manufacturing for Marlette Homes. He belonged to the United Methodist Church in Caseville. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren. Surviving are his son, Bob Fountain, and his wife, Angela, of Sterling Heights; one granddaughter, Angela Fountain; and a grandson Ryan Fountain. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marion. There will be a memorial service at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 5, 2001 at the United Methodist Church in Caseville. A luncheon will follow at Mitch's Hidden Harbor. Nelson Santhany Nelson Joseph "Sonny" Santhany, 87, of Gotts Corner died Friday afternoon, April 6, 2001, at Courtney Manor, Bad Axe. He was born March 27, 1914 at the home of his parents, the late Nelson and Mary Jane (Stinson) Santhany in Pinnebog. On February 19, 1944 he was united in marriage to Mary Irene Soper at St. Felix Catholic Church, Pinnebog and lived on the family farm north of Gotts Corner in Lake Township. Sonny and his father cleared that land around Rush Lake that he farmed until retiring in 1979. Sonny was a member of St. Felix Catholic Church, Pinnebog. He was an avid gardener and superior euchre player. He was also a woodsman and trapper along the shores of Rush Lake all his life. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Irene; his daughter Mary Nicholson and her husband, Ed, of Fairgrove; his son, Paul Santhany of Gotts Corner; five grandchildren, Cheryl, Wendy, Heidi, Marcy and Lisa; his sister Clara Kuhn of Florida, also many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son Don on Aug. 23, of 1999; four sisters and their husbands Mary Florence Santhany, Hazel McCormick and her husband, John, Helen Reilly and her husband, Martin, and Eileen Peterson and her husband, Bates. A funeral mass will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday April 11, 2001 at St. Felix Catholic Church. Sr. Mary Schwartz, and Fr. Dennis Kucharczyk will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Champagne Funeral Chapel, Elkton and for 10 a.m. until the time of service on Wednesday. Esther Scheiwe Esther M. Scheiwe, 88, of Sebewaing, passed away Saturday April 7, 2001 at the Carriage House of Bay City following a lengthy illness. She was born April 27, 1912 in Sebewaing, daughter of the late Adolph and Ann Maria (Gall) Neuman. She was united in marriage to Alfred E. Scheiwe on June, 25, 1937 in Sebewaing. He preceded her in death on Oct. 16, 1994. Esther was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aid. She also enjoyed cooking and baking. Surviving are one daughter, one son and spouses; Barb and Clark Eidt of Sebewaing; Warren and Jean Scheiwe of Bay City; seven grandchildren; two great grand children; two sisters, Ruth Neuman and Elsie Baur both of Sebewaing; several nieces and nephews, also a very close friends Betty and Earl Crabtree of Sebewaing. She was preceded in death by one sister, Thelma Neuman, three brothers, Walter, Albert and Edgar Neuman. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday April 9, 2001 at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Rev Charles Kuhl will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be at the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing from 3 to 9 p.m. on Sunday. She will lie in state at the church from 9:30 p.m. Monday until the time of service. Memorials may be made to Scheiwe Scholarship Fund or the Radio Mission Fund. Harrison Stine Harrison H. Stine, 81, of Cass City, died Friday, April 6, 2001 at Hills and Dales General Hospital, Cass City. He was born April 21, 1919 in Novesta Township to George Ilerman and Mabel (Gleasure) Stine. He married Roberta F. Romig on Nov. 16, 1945 at the Ubly Presbyterian Church. Harrison was a dairy and beef farmer all his life. He retired in 1993 when he and Roberta moved into town. He was a member of Fraser Presbyterian Church and the Cass City VFW Post No. 3644. Harrison is survived by his wife, Roberta; sons, David Stine and his wife, Jean, of Saginaw, Dennis Stine and his wife, Susan, of Sanford; grandchildren: Marc Stine and his wife, Leslie, Laurin Gierman and her husband, Rick, John Stine and Jessica Stine; great grandchildren: Ester Gierman, Bethany Gierman, Jacob Gierman and Brenden Stine; sister Dorothy Smith of Fenton; brother Bruce Stine and his wife, Otillia, of Seattle, Wash; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Monday April 9, 2001 at Kranz Funeral Home, Cass City with Rev. Mark Morningstar of Sandusky Presbyterian Church officiating. Herbert Price Herbert J. Price Sr., 99, of Sand Point passed away Friday April 6, 2001 at Courtney Manor, Bad Axe. He was born on Sept. 23, 1901 in Ontario, Canada and was united in marriage with his late beloved wife, Iva (Brown) on July 15, 1925. Herbert and Iva moved to Sand Point in 1986. He is survived by his son, Herbert Price Jr., and his wife, Mary, of Palm Springs, Fla.; a daughter, Carol L Rice and her husband, William, of Sand Point; two brothers and one sister in Canada; five grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren and one great great grandson. Mr. Price was a member of the Pigeon Lions Club, past president of the Friendship Lions of Detroit, Friendship Lodge, NO. 417 F&AM and Moslem Shrine also of Detroit. Funeral services will be on Wednesday April 11, 2001 at Kaul Funeral Home in Clinton Township with burial in the Caseville Township Cemetery. Monday, April 9, 2001 Bette Neal Bette Jane Neal, 76, of Sand Point, Caseville Township, passed away Saturday, April 7, 2001, at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon. She was born on Nov. 9, 1924, in Flint to Harold and Clara Belle (Ferguson) Poley. She married in Mount Morris to Clinton William "Tony" Neal. The couple later divorced. Mrs. Neal was a charter member of the Caseville Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 3690 Auxiliary. She is survived by two sons, Scott Neal of Belize, Central America, and Bradley Neal and his special friend, Vicki Voelker, of Caseville; two grandsons, Nathan Clinton Neal and his wife, Janene Susanne and Brandon Alan Neal; one granddaughter, Rebecca Nicole; a great-grandson, Blake Hendrix; two sisters, Joyce Hillier and her husband, Garth, of Texas and Edna Hicks of Mount Morris; one niece and two nephews. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Peggy Jo. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home in Pigeon with the Rev. Alan DeGraw officiating. Memorials may be made to the family's wishes or the Caseville Library Club. Gertrude Osentoski Mrs. Gertrude B. Osentoski, 87, of Woodhaven and formerly of Verona, passed away on Saturday, April 7, 2001, in Oakwood-Scaway Hospital in Trenton after a long illness. She was born on Dec. 21, 1913, in Minden City to the late Frank and Annie (Ziskie) Zulka. She married Julius Osentoski on Nov. 12, 1934, at St. Mary's in Parisville. He preceded her in death on May 25, 1947. She was a graduate of a country school. In her younger days, she picked beans. She lived in the Verona area until 1967 when she moved to Detroit where she worked in the rectory at St. Gertrude Parish of St. Clair Shores. She was a food handler for 15 years in the cafeteria at Orchard Lake Seminary and College before retiring in 1975. She was a resident of Orchard Lake College Campus and a member of St. Mary's Orchard Lake Parish. She was an honorary member of St. Rita Altar Society and a past member of St. Anne's Mothers Study Club, both of St. Joseph Parish of Rapson. She is survived by four sons, Robert Osentoski and his wife, Janice, of Troy, Donald Osentoski and his wife, Patricia, of Temperance, Jerry Osentoski and his wife, Patricia, of Taylor, and Kenneth Osentoski and his wife, Nancy, of Port Hope; 14 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Betty; one son, Leonard; two brothers, Bill Zulka and Ed Zinger; three sisters, Martha Gwisdalla, Anna Peruski and Albina Zulka; and one half-sister, Agnes Grymski. Mass of Christian Burial for Gertrude B. Osentoski will be at noon on Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at St. John Catholic Church of Ubly with the Rev. T.J. Fleming, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery in the spring. There will be a parish wake service at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly. Tuesday, April 10, 2001 Alma Case Alma "DesJardin" Case, 84, passed away Monday, April 9, 2001, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. She was born on Nov. 15, 1916, in Bad Axe to the late Charles and Tilly (Tetreau) Gates. She graduated from Bad Axe High School. On July 3, 1937, Miss Alma Gates and Mr. Clarence Joseph DesJardin were united in marriage. Clarence preceded Alma in death on April 7, 1966. On Sept. 20, 1975, Alma married Mr. Harold Case. He preceded Alma in death on Oct. 20, 1990. Alma was employed by the Huron County Medical Care Facility from 1961 to 1978. She was a 4-H leader and enjoyed reading novels and poems, traveling and playing cards. She is survived by one daughter, Colleen E. McGee and her husband, Jim, of Bad Axe; one son, William H. DesJardin and his wife, Cathy, of Seattle; one brother, Jack Gates and his wife, Bettie, of Davison; three sisters, Amber Leipprandt of Pigeon, Pat Gross of Bad Axe and Charlene Zessin and her husband, Jim, of Bay City; five grandchildren, Shelly DesJardin of Washington, Jill Lohman and her husband, Chris, of Greenville, LaNee McShane and her husband, Bernard, of Anderson, S.C., Joe McGee and Steve McGee of Bad Axe; three great-grandchildren, Amber and Bernie McShane and Joel Lohman. Alma was preceded in death by her husbands, Clarence DesJardin and Harold Case; one son, Joel DesJardin; four sisters, Hazel Gates, Peg Harrison, Grace Leigh and June Hartjoy; one brother Russ Gates. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 12, 2001 at the MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe. The Rev. Gordon Gossman, pastor of the Bad Axe Church of Nazarene, will officiate with burial in Colfax Township Cemetery. Frances Flannery Frances Flora (McLeod) Flannery, 92, died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at Murson Medical Center in Traverse City. She was born on Aug. 22, 1908, in Greenleaf Township to the late Angus and Frances (McIntyre) McLeod. On June 25, 1932, Miss Frances McLeod and Mr. Leo Flannery were united in marriage. Frances was a homemaker and enjoyed reading, cross stitching and crossword puzzles. She was of the Catholic faith. Surviving are one son, Patrick Richard Flannery and his wife, Pamela, of Traverse City; three daughters, Mary Flannery Tulloch and her husband, Dr. John Tulloch, of Grosse Pointe, Frances Ann Ezakilson of Jackson and Honora Flannery Gilmore and her husband, Thomas, of St. Clair Shores; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. Frances was preceded in death by her husband, Leo Flannery; one sister, Flora McIntosh; two brothers, Angus and Duncan McLeod. A graveside burial service will take place at 5 p.m. today, Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at St. Columbkille Catholic Cemetery with Father T.J. Flemming officiating. A memorial service will be conducted at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe. Edward Fletcher Edward G. Fletcher, 73, of Speaker Township died unexpectedly on Monday, April 9, 2001, on arrival at McKenzie Memorial Hospital in Sandusky. He was born on Jan. 23, 1928, in Speaker Township in Sanilac County, the son of Harry and Birdie Groat Fletcher. Ed served his country in the United States Army from October 1946 to February 1948. He and Shirley Phillips were married on Feb. 4, 1949, in Sandusky. He was employed at Mueller Brass Co. in Port Huron from 1950 until retiring as a saw grinder in 1986. He was a lifelong area farmer. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; two sons, Rick Fletcher and his wife, Theresa, of Bad Axe and Larry Fletcher and his wife, Marie, of Almont; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother Merrell; and a sister, Joyce Jones. He was preceded in death by sons, Ronald in 1980 and Robert in 1997; brother, Clifford; sister, Erva. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 12, 2001, at Kaatz Funeral Directors, 10 S. Main St. in Yale. The Rev. Memorials may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. William Knaus William J. Knaus, 82, of Meade Township died on Sunday, April 8, 2001, at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon. He was born on Feb. 19, 1919, in Meade Township to the late Clemens and Thressia (Weis) Knaus. He and Grace McCormick were married on Nov. 27, 1943, at St. Felix Catholic Church in Pinnebog. William was a lifelong member of St. Felix Catholic Church, where he served on the cemetery board. He was a charter member of the U&I Club in Port Austin, a member of the UCT and a third degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He served on the Pinnebog school board and as a Meade Township trustee for more than 30 years. William was a lifelong farmer in Meade Township and also worked at the Michigan Sugar Co. factory in Sebewaing. He is survived by his wife, Grace; six children, William D. Knaus and his wife, Bonnie, of Vermont, Virginia M. Buggia and her husband, Ralph, of Saginaw, Marlene R. Knaus of Royal Oak, Robert A. Knaus and his wife, Susanne, of Saginaw, David A. Knaus and his wife, Linda, of Saginaw and Ronald Knaus and his wife, Janet, of Grand Rapids; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son, Richard C. Knaus; one sister, Catherine Pechette; two brothers, Alex F. and Lawrence Knaus. A funeral mass will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 12, 2001, at St. Felix Catholic Church in Pinnebog with Sr. Mary Schwartz officiating and with Fr. Visitation is from noon to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home and from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Thursday at the church. Wednesday, April 11, 2001 Bruce Thompson Bruce A. Thompson, 88, of Cass City died Monday, April 9, 2001, in Tendercare Nursing Facility in Cass City. He was born on Nov. 12, 1912, in Adrian to Charles A. and Clara (Daily) Thompson. He married Ila Dougherty on Dec. 23, 1934, in Kinglsey. She died Aug. 15, 1974. He later married Mildred Spoor on June 22, 1977, in Traverse City. Mr. Thompson was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps for two years. He retired from GTE as a construction supervisor after more than 41 years. He enjoyed golf, bowling and played semi-professional football with the Big Reds of Adrian. Bruce is survived by his wife, Mildred; children, Judy Pryor and her husband, Jim, of Adrian and Gregory Thompson of Cass City; stepchildren, Nada Doerr and her husband, Ed, of Caseville, Winona Farrington and her husband, Al, of Bitley, Kay Cohoon and her husband, Glen, of Romulus, Sharon Frantz and her husband, Jim, of Traverse City; step- daughter-in-law, Sylvia Spoor of Lake Ann; 15 step-grandchildren; brother, Robert Thompson and his wife, Rosemary, of Adrian; sister-in-law, Doris Thompson of Adrian; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Charles Thompson and Jim Thompson; sisters, Alice Yensch, Lillian Clark and Darrow Eich; stepson Duane Spoor. Arrangements were handled by Kranz Funeral Home in Cass City. Thursday, April 12, 2001 Shirley Rapson Shirley A. Rapson, 71, of Harbor Beach passed away Wednesday, April 11, 2001 at her home. She was born in Harbor Beach on Dec. 12, 1929, the daughter of the late Ted and Matilda (Schewe) Fuhrman. Shirley and George Rapson were united in marriage on Jan. 21, 1950, in Zion Lutheran Church in Harbor Beach. She was a former employee of the Huron County Bank in Harbor Beach and was an active member of the Zion Lutheran Church her entire life. She was a former Sunday school teacher, choir member, member of the bible study group, Lutheran Women's Missionary League and the Ladies of Zion. She was also a member of the Thumb Chapter of Multiple Sclerosis Society. Shirley is survived by her husband, George Rapson of Harbor Beach; children, Rhonda Cook and her husband, Richard, of Bad Axe, Paula Wood and her husband, Thomas, of Harbor Beach, Randy Rapson and his wife, Andrea, of Harbor Beach and David Rapson and his wife, Ellen, of Traverse City; 11 grandchildren; one sister, Virginia Fuhrman of Sandusky. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 14, 2001, at Zion Lutheran Church in Harbor Beach with the Rev. Mark Girardin, pastor officiating. Burial will be in the Rock Falls Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. tonight and from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday at the Ramsey Funeral Home in Harbor Beach and from noon until the time of the services at the church. Memorials may be given to Zion Lutheran Church or Zion School funds. Margaret Walsh Margaret Doris Walsh, 72, of Royal Oak passed away on Monday, April 9, 2001, in William Beaumont Hospital of Royal Oak. She was born on Oct. 21, 1928, in Detroit, the daughter of the late Thomas and Helen (Gould Walton) Mainwaring. She married Lawrence J. Walsh (Chappy) on June 28, 1952, in Detroit. He preceded her in death on March 14, 1997. She was a graduate of Cooley High School and Wayne State University, where she earned a master of library science degree. She was a teacher in the Berkley School District and a librarian at the Anderson School. She was a parishioner of the Shrine of the Little Flower Parish of Royal Oak and a resident of Royal Oak for many years. She enjoyed reading, crosswords and traveling with her husband. She is survived by two daughters, Laurie Potter and her husband, Keith, of Huntington Woods and Cynthia Dillon and her husband, Francis, of Berkley; one son, Thomas Walsh of Royal Oak; five grandchildren; one brother, Rosser Mainwaring, M.D. and his wife, Helen, of Dearborn. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Margaret (Peggy) Walsh in 1967. Arrangements are being made by the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly. There will be no visitation. Cremation took place at Sunset Valley Crematory of Bay City. A memorial service will be scheduled at the St. Ignatius Cemetery at a later date. Friday, April 13, 2001 Matthew Mazure Mr. Matthew E. Mazure, 94, of Ubly died on Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at the Huron Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. He was born on Feb. 1, 1907, in Ubly, son of the late Rufus and Martha (Skrzyanski) Mazure. He married Constance Zurek on Oct. 13, 1934, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Parisville. She preceded him in death on Feb. 10, 2000. He attended McMillan Country School. He farmed and worked at the Bad Axe grain elevator for many years, retiring in 1965. He was a bartender in Ubly for many years, a security guard at Hamill Industries and a caretaker at Sheldon Campground. Mr. Mazure was a lifelong parishioner at St. Mary's Church in Parisville. He enjoyed playing cards and spending time with his family. He is survived by three sons, Virgil Mazure and his wife, Nancy, of Bad Axe, Willard Mazure and his wife, Louise, of Livonia and LaVern Mazure and his wife, Judy, of Hale; two daughters, Diane Leppek and her husband, Ronald, of Bad Axe and Joyce Lamke and her husband, Myron, of Ubly; 13 grandchildren, Lisa Polega and her husband, Martin, of Bad Axe, Rodney Mazure and his wife, Lori, of Cass City, Erin Mazure of Bad Axe, Willard Mazure and his wife, Linda, of Jackson, Kevin Mazure and his wife, Cindy, of Westland, Radene Kumaus and her husband, Mark, of Ubly, Rhonda Leppek of Ubly, Rene Kluger and her husband, Keith, of Bad Axe, Ryan Leppek and his wife, Janet, of Bad Axe, Kristy Hallock of Kinde, Elliot Lamke of Ubly, Michele Olechnowicz and her husband, Scott, of South Lyon, Matthew H. Amanda Errer Amanda Errer, 106, of Pigeon passed away on Thursday, April 12, 2001 at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon after a short illness. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
