Local obituaries for the week of September 9, 2001 Sunday, September 9, 2001 Garnet Dean Garnet Dean, 100, lifelong resident of Huron County, passed away Friday, Sept. 7, 2001, at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon. She was born in Oliver Township on March 5, 1901, daughter of the late Henry and Pauline (Ginter) Motz. After receiving a diploma from Del-Mar Beauty School in Detroit, she opened Garnet's Beauty Shop, the first beauty shop in Pigeon, in 1928. She worked there for 22 years. On Nov. 11, 1950, she was united in marriage to Charles A. Dean at the Elkton E.U.B. Parsonage. He preceded her in death on June 3, 1960. Mrs. Dean was an accomplished seamstress and cook and loved baking and entertaining family and friends. She enjoyed word search and crossword puzzles, Yahtze, dominoes, and Scrabble, as well as television programs such as Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, travelogues, and Hour of Power. She also enjoyed drawing, coloring, reciting poems she learned in school, and reminiscing. She was a member of the Salem United Methodist Church in Pigeon. Mrs. Dean is survived by four nieces, Esther Motz of Bad Axe, Donna Noble and her husband, Stuart, of Kinde, Charlene Bensinger and her husband, Gordon, of Ubly, and Evelyn Motz of Croswell; and many great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Beulah Pierce and Reva Pauline Peterson; and two brothers, Freeman and Homer Motz. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 10, 2001, at the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home in Pigeon, with the Rev. Michael Sawicki, pastor of the Salem United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Elkton. Visitation will take place at the funeral home today from 2 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Monday from 9 a.m. until the time of services. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or Salem United Methodist Church. Robert Musall Robert Russell Musall, 65, of Cass City died unexpectedly Friday, Sept. 7, 2001, at Hills and Dales General Hospital. He was born Aug. 14, 1936, in Gagetown to Edward and Gretta (Gill) Musall. He never married. Bob worked for Erla's Food Center and Packing for 51 years, retiring in 2000. During this time, he worked as meat cutter, salesman, truck driver and butcher. Bob worked six days a week since he was 14. Bob is survived by his brothers, Don Musall of Bad Axe, Carl Musall of Washington, and Gary Musall; and many friends, including Ken and Jean Klinkman of Deford and Jeff Krol of Cass City. He was preceded in death by his sister, Shirley Musall and two brothers, Dale and Richard Musall. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10, 2001, at Kranz Funeral Home in Cass City, with Pastor David Edwards of Cass City Missionary Church officiating. Interment is in Elkland Township Cemetery in Cass City. Visitation will be at the funeral home today from 2 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Pallbearers for Mr. Musall are Dave Ware, Jeff Krol, Oscar Brooks, Norris Holdburg, Joe Szrapski and Trent LeValley. Monday, September 10, 2001 - None Tuesday, September 11, 2001 Wanda Stoeckle Wanda Marie Stoeckle, 79, of Bay Port passed away Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001, at St. Mary's in Saginaw. She was born in Bay Port on Aug. 16, 1922, daughter of the late Vernon C. and Sophia K. (Kuhl) Quick. She was a 1941 graduate of Bay Port High School. On Sept. 4, 1943, she was united in marriage to Floyd Stoeckle at Great Falls, Mo. He preceded her in death on Sept. 3, 1961. Mrs. Stoeckle worked for 20 years at the Caro Regional Center as a nurse attendant until her retirement in 1985. She thoroughly enjoyed gardening, reading, bird-watching, and going to auctions. She also enjoyed cooking and collecting cookbooks. She was a member of the St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church in Pigeon. Her survivors include her daughter, Janice Wurst and her husband, Leroy, of Pigeon; grandchildren, Christopher and Shelly Wurst of Sebewaing and Catherine and Shawn Dayak of Pigeon; five great-grandchildren, Derek, Kalyn, Kristyn, Nicholas, and Christian; her sister, Helen Krauss of Sebewaing; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Jerry T. Stoeckle; and three brothers, Clare, Glen, and Earl Quick. The Mass of Christian Burial will be private. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home, A Golden Rule Funeral Home in Pigeon. Memorials for Mrs. Stoeckle may be made to Walk For Life-Huron County Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, St. Francis Special Projects Fund, or the charity of the donor's choice. Wednesday, September 12, 2001 Jean Davis Jean M. (Brown) Davis, 71, former resident of Bad Axe, long time resident of Lincoln Park, and current resident of Westland, died on her birthday, Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2001, from lung cancer. She was a graduate of Bad Axe High School, Class of 1949. Jean was a fun loving person, who was huggy, kissy, and sometimes spirited, with a hearty laugh. She is survived by two sons, Joel C. Davis and his wife, Rene, of Ecorse, and Terrance E. Davis and his wife, Karen, of Lincoln Park; one grandson, Kyle Davis, of Ecorse; three sisters, Phyllis M. Jones of Flint, Doris L. Meyer of Des Plains, Ill., and Peggy Champagne of Wixom; two brothers, Calvin J. Brown, and C.B. Morden (Doc) Brown, both of Bad Axe; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles O. Davis in 1988; her father, Earl W. Brown in 1947, her mother Mabel E. Brown, in 1985; and her brother, Charles E. Brown, in 1994. A private burial took place at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Bad Axe. Local arrangements were handled by the Collon Funeral Home in Caro. Kathleen Krohn Kathleen Krohn, 77, of Colfax Township near Elkton died Monday afternoon, Sept. 10, 2001, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Saginaw. She was born on Oct. 12, 1923, at the home of her parents, the late Herman and Lillian (Gregor) Gettel in Sebewaing. On Oct. 7, 1925, she was united in marriage to Wayne A. Krohn at the Methodist parsonage in Kilmanagh. She and her husband farmed in Oliver Township and had owned and operated the Elkton Dairy Bar for eight years before selling it in 1965. She was a member of the Elkton United Methodist Church, charter member of Century Oaks Golf Club, and enjoyed many hobbies including bowling, golf, gardening and fishing. She also enjoyed the time she spent with her family, especially the grand and great-grandchildren. Surviving are her husband, Wayne; her daughter, Kay Thompson and her husband, Floyd; three sons, Terry Krohn and his wife, Cathy, Jim Krohn and his friend, Jean Rubble, all of Elkton and Doug Krohn and his wife, Chris, of Colfax Township; twelve grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and her sister, Viola Dembowske, of Sebewaing. Kathleen was preceded in death by a great grandson, Kyle; her sister, Orpha Webber; and a brother, Harlan Gettel. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001, at the Elkton United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today at the Champagne Funeral Chapel in Elkton and from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Thursday at the church. Memorials may be given to the Elkton United Methodist Church. Walter Loss Mr. Walter F. Loss, 81, of Port Huron and Capac passed away Monday, Sept. 10, 2001, after a long illness in his residence. He was born on Aug. 6, 1920, in Forestville to the late William and Martha Loss. He married Victoria Jean Lasurka on Dec. 20, 1947, in Port Huron. She preceded him in death on June 4, 1999. Mr. Loss was a retired Mueller Brass Co. employee and was a long time farmer. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II. He was a member of the VFW Post No. 796, Capac American Legion, South Park Lions Club and Old Newsboys. He was a loving father and grandfather. Surviving are his daughter, Kathy Jaminson and her husband, Ron, of Port Huron; his two little angels, Racheal and Nikki; brother, Arnold Loss of Forestville; sisters-in-law, Dorothy McGraw of Marysville, and Mary Pilan of Shelby Township; several nieces and nephews; and a special care giver, Virginia Hite of Dryden. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, in Our Savior Lutheran Church at 1029 Sixth Street in Port Huron. The Rev. Donald Doerzbacher, Pastor of Our Savior Lutheran Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery. St. Clair County Allied Veterans will conduct Military Honors. Pallbearers will be Jeffery Smith, Gary Smith, Michael Smith, Ray Toech, Larry Rosseau and Walter Loss. Honorary Pallbearers are Robert Bennke and Tom Thielman. Visiting hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday in the Jowett Funeral Home, 1634 Lapeer Ave. at 17th Street, and from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday at the church. Thursday, September 13, 2001 Virginia Etzler Virginia Etzler, 79, of Bad Axe died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001, at Huron Memorial Hospital. She was born on May 30, 1922, in Bad Axe to the late Russell and Beulah (Panborn) Braden. A lifelong resident of Bad Axe, Virginia graduated from Bad Axe High School in 1940. She was a member of First United Methodist Church. Virginia and Jack Etzler were married Jan. 26, 1944, at the United Methodist Parsonage. She is survived by her husband, Jack; a daughter, Ruth Ann Etzler of Bad Axe; brother, Russell L. Braden and his wife, Dorothy, of Bad Axe; and several nieces and nephews. Her sister, Evelyn R. Jacks, preceded her in death. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe. The Rev. William Wright will officiate. Burial will be at Colfax Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 until 9 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. William Kiehl William Kiehl, 66, a lifelong farmer and resident of Sigel Township died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, at his home. He was born on Feb. 27, 1935, in Bad Axe, son of the late John and Alma (Kirsch) Kiehl. William and Sharon Anderson were united in marriage on Feb. 6, 1960. William, a member of Most Holy Trinity Church and Jr. Governor of Moose Lodge 2358, graduated from Bad Axe High School in 1953. He enjoyed golfing, playing euchre, ice fishing, and visiting with family and friends. Surviving are his wife, Sharon; two sons, Rusty Kiehl of Bad Axe, Jeff and his wife, Amy Kiehl, of Bad Axe; two daughters, Coleen and her husband, Robert Koglin, of Port Hope, Janet Kiehl and her special friend, Boyd Buschlen, of Bad Axe; five brothers, Robert and his wife, Jean, of Bad Axe, John Jr. "Jack" and his wife, Betty, of Caro, Ed and his wife, Mary, of Bad Axe, Dan "Duck" and his wife, Marie, of Bad Axe, Richard and his wife, Joyce, of Bad Axe; two sisters, Joanne Roggenbuck and her husband, Herb, of Bad Axe, Mary Sageman of Bad Axe; nine grandchildren, Jonathan "John Boy" Koglin, Allan Koglin, Matthew Koglin, Eric Koglin, William "Willie" Kiehl, Amanda Wehner, Nicholas Wehner, Emily Kiehl, Katie Kiehl; and three honorary children, Danny Decker, Brian Decker, Michael Decker. William was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Joseph "Tubby" Sageman Jr. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church at Smith Corners. Fr. John Weis will officiate. There will be a Moose Lodge service at 7 p.m. and a scripture service at 7:30 p.m. today at MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe. Burial will be at Verona Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon until 9 p.m. today and from 9 until 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be offered to Huron Memorial Hospice, the American Cancer Society, and the American Diabetes Association. Gerald Thompson Gerald R. Thompson, 67, of Harbor Beach passed away on Wednesday morning, Sept. 12, 2001, at Harbor Beach Community Hospital. Born in Detroit on April 25, 1934, he was the son of the late Henry and Elsie (Fenning) Thompson. Dorothy Kosal and Jerry were united in marriage on Nov. 29, 1953, in Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Ruth. He was in the U.S. Marines for four years. Jerry was a former Harbor Beach Policeman during 1959 to 1965 and was employed by Chrysler for 6 years and was owner of the Thompson Oil Co. in Harbor Beach for 24 and a half years until his retirement in 1995. He enjoyed doing woodworking projects, especially building boats and ships. Jerry was a member of the VFW Post 9344 and the American Legion Post 197 both of Harbor Beach. Jerry is survived by his wife, Dorothy Thompson of Harbor Beach; children, Gary Thompson of Escanaba, Tracy Swartzendruber and her husband, Brian, of Three Rivers; an uncle, A. G. Thompson of Fla.; two aunts, Lucille Fenning of Troy and Lydia Tabor of Bad Axe; several nieces and nephews; a brother-in-law, Kenneth Kosal of Farmington Hills; five sisters-in-law, Bea Opalewski and her husband, Norbert, of East Pointe, Patricia Scripka and her husband, Dan, of Roseville, Doreen Grifka and her husband, Lavern, of Ubly, Judy Ulfig and her husband, Ken, of Ruth, and Cindy Pollum and her husband, Dan, of Ubly; and his mother-in-law, Agnes Kosal of Harbor Beach. Cremation has taken place at Sunset Valley Crematory in Bay City and a memorial service will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, in the Ramsey Funeral Home, Harbor Beach with Sr. Eileen Houlihan, IHM, pastoral associate of Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church officiating. Interment will be in the Rock Falls Cemetery. A Military graveside service will be conducted by the VFW and American Legion. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the time of services on Sunday in the funeral home. Friday, September 14, 2001 Patricia Knoblock Patricia A. Knoblock, 61, of Port Austin died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001, at Huron Memorial Hospital in Bad Axe. She was born on Sept. 7, 1940, the daughter of the late Charles and Mildred (Sedlow) D'Hondt. She and Edwin Knoblock were married on Dec. 20, 1972. Pat worked at the Port Austin Bank from 1980 to 1995. She enjoyed crafting, gambling and traveling. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and her family. She is survived by her husband, Edwin; her daughters, Justina Louma and her husband, Timothy, of Sparta, N. J. and Lynne Wiley and her husband, David, of Carlton; and her sons, Edwin Knoblock and his wife, Barbara, of Farmington Hills, and Robert Knoblock and his wife, Michelle, of Richmond; grandchildren, Cody, Kelly, Edwin, Eric, Kala, Kelsey, Alex, Cody and Hailey; one sister, Joan Dalian and her husband, Anthony, of South Lyon; one brother, Charles D'Hondt and his wife, Hazel, of Warren. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin with Fr. Robert J. Pare, pastor officiating. Joseph LaBelle Joseph Raymond LaBelle, 92, of Bay City passed away Wednesday evening, Sept. 12, 2001, at Bay Medical Center. He was born on Oct. 23, 1936, to George and Rose (DesJardins) LaBelle in Huron County. Mr. LaBelle owned a farm near Sebewaing for 13 years and lived in Elkton for 16 years. He retired from Michigan Lumber Fabricators of Elkton after 25 years as head of maintenance. He resided in Bay City for since 1979. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and was a regular attendee of Riverside Friendship Senior Center for 22 years, where he would often sing songs for them and liked to tell stories about his French Heritage. He is survived by three daughters, Joan Burzynski and her husband, James, of Bay City, Linda Buda and her husband, John, of Bay City, Evelyn DeMetrick and her husband, David, of Yuma, Ariz.; three sons, Donald LaBelle and his wife, Elaine, of Marlette, James LaBelle and his wife, Virginia, of Marlette, and Thomas LaBelle and his wife, Mary, of Elkton; two sons-in- law, Frederick Meyers of Bay City, John Douglas of Auburn Hills; 22 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one brother, Wilfred LaBelle of Westland; two brothers-in-law, Robert Cregeur of Bad Axe and Louis Zinniger of California; one sister-in-law, Mary LaBelle of Oregon; many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was predeceased in April 1988 by his wife, Frances Marie (Englehart) LaBelle whom he married Oct. 23, 1936; two daughters, Patricia Meyers in 1987, and Shirley Douglas in 1986; one son, William LaBelle in 1993; one brother and four sisters. The funeral mass will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Fr. Leonard F. Wilkuski with the Rite of Committal following in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. The Parish Vigil Service will be at 7:30 pm. today at the Gephart Funeral Home, Inc., 201 W. Midland St., Bay City. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and from 9 a.m. until the time of services at the church. Memorial envelopes for Hospice of Bay Area or Holy Trinity Catholic Church will be available at the funeral home. Mary Beth Loewe On Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001, Mary Elizabeth Loewe, a women of great inner beauty and dignity, returned to the loving arms of her Lord and Savior. Mary Beth was a mother, a grandmother, and a great-grandmother, her greatest treasure was her family. She was loved by all and was a dear friend to many. She was born on Feb. 6, 1921, in Detroit, daughter of the late Vernon and Mary Everton. She and Carl Loewe were married on Aug. 13, 1949, in Detroit. He preceded her in death on Dec. 15, 1993. Mary Beth was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin, as well as a member of the Port Austin Friends of the Library. She is survived by eight children, the Rev. Timothy Loewe and his wife, Betty, of Saginaw, Thomas Loewe of Ann Arbor, Anthony Loewe and his wife, Jill, of Port Austin, Pamela Kirtchen and her husband, Harold, of Ann Arbor, Penny Day and her husband, Gary, of Silver Springs, Md., Theodore Loewe and his wife, Kathy, of Bad Axe, Terry Collison and her husband, Allen, of Pigeon, and Cheryl Rowe and her husband, Robert, of Pigeon; 19 grandchildren; and eight great- grandchildren; one sister, Myrtle Angott Laufenberg of West Bloomfield; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one grandchild and one sister, Vivian Gafne. A funeral mass will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. A vigil will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday at Knoblock Funeral Home in Kinde. Visitation will be from 7 until 9 p.m. on Saturday and from 2 until 9 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home and from 9:30 until the time of the service on Monday at the church.
