Local obituaries for the week of October 14, 2001 Sunday, October 14, 2001 George Rapson George A. Rapson, 77, of Harbor Beach, passed away Friday Oct. 12, 2001 at his home following a short illness. Born in Harbor Beach on May 1, 1924, he was the son of the late Karston and Pauline (Reisner) Rapson. George and Shirley were united in marriage on Jan. 21, 1950 in Harbor Beach. Shirley preceded him in death on April 11, 2001. He was a graduate of the Harbor Beach Schools in 1942 and a graduate of the Coyne Electronic School in Chicago in 1943 and attended the Detroit School of Business. George was a veteran of World War II, serving in Burma with the US Army. He worked with his father in their store, and in 1947 George and his brother William opened the Rapson Electric Co. in Harbor Beach. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Harbor Beach and the VFW Post 9344 of Harbor Beach. He was past president of the Harbor Beach Chamber of Commerce, Past President of the Harbor Beach Community Hospital Board of Trustees, former member of the First of American Bank Board and the Huron County Bank Board, co-chairman of the Hospital expansion campaign that built the long-term care unit and a member of the hospital Board of Incorporators. George is survived by his children, Rhonda Cook and her husband, Richard, of Bad Axe; Paula Wood and her husband, Thomas, of Harbor Beach; Randy Rapson and his wife, Andrea, of Harbor Beach; David Rapson and his wife, Ellen, of Traverse City; 11 grandchildren; a brother, William Rapson of Harbor Beach; a sister, Joyce Hopson of Muskegon. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Ryan Cook. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 15, 2001 at the First Presbyterian Church in Harbor Beach with Rev. Theresa Cutler, pastor officiating. Burial will be in the Rock Falls Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Ramsey Funeral Home, Harbor Beach, and from 10 a.m. until the time of services at the church. Elmer Schenkel Elmer W. Schenkel, 85, of Ruth, passed away Friday morning, Oct. 12, 2001 in Deckerville Community Hospital. He was born Sept. 24, 1916 in Ruth to the late Christian and Emma (Dittimer) Schenkel. He married Jessie Whitney on July 4, 1943 at the Methodist Church of Bay City. She preceded him in death on April 22, 1991. Elmer was a graduate of Sherman Township School. He retired from farming in 1962 and worked for seven years at Driveall Manufacturing of Harbor Beach. He was a former member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Harbor Beach. He enjoyed flying his own plane and tinkering with music and around the house. Elmer is survived by one daughter, Sally Wolschleger and her husband, David, of Minden City; three granddaughters, Sheila Wolschleger of Minden City, Renae Dick and her husband, Jack Jr. of St. Clair Shores, Angela Wolschleger and her fiancee, Thomas Veda II, of Warren; one great grandson, Troy Wolschleger of Minden City. He is also survived by one son, Calvin Whitney and his wife, Rita, of Minden City; three grandsons, Craig Whitney of Minden City, Bruce Whitney of Palms, Bradley Whitney of Port Huron; two great grandchildren, Gregory and Amanda Whitney of Minden City. Funeral services for Elmer Schenkel will be at 10 a.m. Monday Oct. 15, 2001 at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home of Ubly. Rev. Henry B. Friends may call the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home of Ubly on Sunday from 1:30 to 9:30 p.m. and on Monday from 9 a.m. until the service time at 10 a.m. Mary Catherine Wellock Mary Catherine Wellock, 77, of Franklin, Tenn., formerly of Bad Axe, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001 in Franklin Tenn. following an extended illness. She was born on June 12, 1924 in Pontiac, daughter of the late Michael John and Mary (Finley) Sheridan. She married George C. Wellock in February of 1947 in Bowling Green, Ohio. He preceded her in death on February 11, 1973. Mrs. Wellock was a nurse at the former Hubbard Hospital, the Huron Medical Care Facility and Huron Memorial Hospital. She was a former member of the Verona Hills Golf Club. She is survived by two sons, Kenneth Wellock and his wife, Anne Marie, of Bad Axe, Gary Wellock and his wife, Maureen, of Franklin, Tenn.; two grandchildren, Shannon and Michael Wellock of Franklin, Tenn.; two sisters, Mary Margaret LaForge and Mary Patricia Blust, both of Waterford; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Michael and Jack Sheridan. Services will take place at 11 a.m. on Tuesday Oct. 16, 2001 at the Kaufman Funeral Home in Bad Axe. Officiating will be Rev. Robert Garrett, pastor of the Port Austin United Protestant Church. Burial will be in the Rock Falls Cemetery in Harbor Beach. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday and from 10 a.m. until the time of services at 11 a.m. Memorials may be offered to the hospice program. St. Clair William Young Sr. St. Clair William "Bill" Young Sr., 82, of Bay Port, died unexpectedly early Friday morning, Oct. 12, 2001 at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon. He was born March 2, 1919 in Elkton, son of the late Victor and Ida (Wenzel) Young. He was married to Susanne M. Harder on Sept. 7, 1985 in Bay Port. She preceded him in death on May 26, 1988. Bill had been employed as a mechanic at Wiederhold Repair Service in Elkton and later Thumb Truck Equipment Inc., in Pigeon before retiring in 1963. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Surviving are one son, St. Clair William Young Jr., of Bay Port; one daughter Sarah Jane Young of Bay Port; two sisters, Helen Mero and her husband, Robert, of Hudson, Vernita Divo of Fraser; also one brother, Kenneth Young and his wife, Lena, of Elkton; one sister-in-law, Lena McGee of Elkton; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother Eldon Young. The funeral services will take place at 5 p.m. today at the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing. Rev. Wayne Keim officiating with burial in the Riverside Cemetery in Elkton. Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. today at the funeral home in Sebewaing. Monday, October 15, 2001 Catherine Gajewski Catherine H. Gajewski, 61, of Elkton died Saturday morning, Oct. 13, 2001, at Covenant Healthcare Cooper in Saginaw. She was born Feb. 2, 1940, in Paisley, Scotland to the late Patrick and Ina (Reid) Carlton. Cathy moved to the United States in 1959, settling in Chicago where she met Frank Gajewski at Fort Sheridan. They moved to Huron County in 1967 and were married at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Dec. 16, 1967. In 1983, they purchased Tamblyn's Party Store at the corner of M-53 and Soper Road, renaming it This & That Party Store. They operated it for 10 years, closing in 1993. Cathy enjoyed her grandchildren and gardening. Her favorite pastime was going to garage sales. Surviving are her husband, Frank; her son, Pat Gajewski of Elkton; her daughter, Kimberly Gajewski and her special friend, John Trupe, of Owendale; and four grandchildren, Justin, Shyler, Cortney and Daltin. Family in Scotland include her brother, Charles Carlton; and two sisters, Margaret Gallacher and Moira Gemmell and her husband, George. In keeping with her wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. A private service for the family will take place later this week. Arrangements are being handled by the Champagne Funeral Chapel, Elkton. Memorials may be made to the family. Andrew Hay Mr. Andrew "Andy" Hay, 88, of Ubly passed away Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, at Courtney Manor Care Facility in Bad Axe. He was born May 27, 1913, in Ubly to the late Robert and Elizabeth (Stewart) Hay. He married Eleanor McKenzie on Dec. 24, 1935, in Snover. She preceded him in death on Sept. 5, 1998. Andy graduated from Ubly High School and was a member of the 1931 Ubly High School championship football team. He also attended Alma College. He was a milk hauler for many years and drove a fuel truck for Kiehl Oil of Ubly for 20 years. He farmed from 1935 to the mid 1950s. He attended both the Presbyterian and Methodist churches of Ubly. He was a former member of the Ubly Lions Club, Ubly Community Club and the Free and Accepted Masons. He was co- founder and drum major of the Ubly Royal Highlanders Bagpipe Group. He is survived by a son, Gene Hay, of Sterling Heights; two grandchildren, Bryan Hay and his wife, Krista, of Sterling Heights and Sheri Beall and her husband, Jack, of Sylvan Lake; one great-grandson, McKinnon Hay of Sterling Heights; and two great-granddaughters, Kennedy Hay of Sterling Heights and Jillian Beall of Sylvan Lake. Funeral services will take place at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, at the Ubly United Methodist Church. The Rev. Ellen Burns, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Valley Cemetery. Arthur Heilig Mr. Arthur Heilig, 81, of Forestville passed away Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, at Harbor Beach Community Hospital. He was born May 21, 1920, in Minden City to the late Henry Sr. and Susan (Michalski) Heilig. He married Norma Jane Slack on May 20, 1950, at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church of Ruth. Arthur graduated from the Charleston School. He retired in 1972 from farming in Minden City. He was a dealer with Sno-Jets Snowmobiles and Lawn Business. He was the neighborhood handyman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and visiting with family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Norma, of Forestville; two daughters, Dorothy Janowiak of Sandusky and Linda Howard and her husband, Gary, of Sandusky; one grandchild, Amanda Ruthko of Kalamazoo; two brothers, Henry "Hank" Heilig, Jr., and his wife, Leona, of Minden City and Herbert Heilig and his wife, Evelyn, of Sanford; and two sisters, Mary Fisher and her husband, Sylvester, of Ubly and Stella Cook and her husband, Elmer, of Florida. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Raymond, Sr., Joseph and John Heilig. The funeral mass will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church of Ruth. The Rev. Steve Gavit, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. There will be a vigil service at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Smigielski Funeral Home on Cass Avenue in Minden City. Visitation will be 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. this evening, 1 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, and from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Family Discretionary Fund. Gerald Koskie Gerald Koskie, 75, of Ubly died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, at his residence after a long illness. At his request, there will be no visitation or funeral service at this time. Cremation has taken place at Sunset Valley Crematory in Bay City. Arrangements are being handled by the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home of Ubly. Phyllis Schweitzer Phyllis M. Schweitzer, 76, of Sebewaing died Monday, Oct. 8, 2001, at Tendercare of Cass City following a lengthy illness. Private committal services took place at Memorial Park Cemetery in Sebewaing. Arrangements were handled by the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing. Tuesday, October 16, 2001 Dolores Bell Dolores (Costello) Bell, 70, of Farmington Hills and formerly of Kinde, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001. She was born on March 22, 1931, in Bad Axe, daughter of the late William Sr. and Mary (McGee) Costello. Her husband, Marion Bell, preceded her in death in June 1978. She worked at Karmonos Institute in Detroit for 38 years. She is survived by sons, Johnny Bell of Stockbridge and Billy Bell of Farmington Hills; daughters, Mary Hatch, R.N. of Farmington Hills, Barbara Knuutila of Hollow Rock, Tenn., Ann Shane of Pinckney, Kathy Cox of Lewisville, Texas and Patty Kucera of Chelsea; 14 grandchildren; brother, George Costello, of Kinde; sisters, Virginia Eskau of Caseville and Margaret "Peggy" Sturm of Port Austin. She was preceded in death by a brother, William Costello Jr. of Kinde. Funeral arrangements were conducted by the Helney-Sundquist Funeral Home, and a service was conducted at St. Alexander Church, both of Farmington Hills. She was buried on Oct. 13, 2001. Memorials may be given to the St. Alexander Workers of Mary. Rose G. Gilbert Rose G. Gilbert, 85, of Bad Axe passed away Monday, Oct. 15, 2001, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility after a long illness. She was born Feb. 9, 1916, in Parisville, daughter of the late Ignatius and Rose (Staroska) Rumptz. Rose and Kenneth were united in marriage on Feb. 19, 1937, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Argyle. Kenneth preceded her in death on August 23, 1984. Rose attended the Parisville Country School. She was a homemaker throughout her life and helped her husband on the farm. Rose is survived by one son, Dale R. Gilbert, Sr., and his wife, Marilyn, of Rapson; four grandchildren, Darin and his fiancee, Marsha Laming, of Warren, Dwayne of Essexville, Jamie Lynn of Mount Pleasant and Dale Jr. of Big Rapids; and two sisters-in-law, Aletha Wills and Eldora Gowan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth; her son Richard; twin daughters Shirley and Mary; two sisters, Alma Schefka and Sylvia Priemer; one brother, William Rumptz; two sisters-in-law, Genevieve Wooley and Eva Reimann. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Rapson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly from 1:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, and from 9 to 10 a.m. on Thursday. Wednesday, October 17, 2001 Cass Ertman Mr. Cass I. Ertman, 84, of Ruth died Monday, Oct. 15, 2001 at Courtney Manor Care Facility in Bad Axe. He was born Jan. 13, 1917 in Ruth, son of the late John and Anna (Karchina) Ertman. He never married. Mr. Ertman was a graduate of St. Mary Elementary School. He farmed until 1978. He was a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Smith Corners for 45 years. He is survived by one brother-in-law, Paul Lemanski, of Bad Axe and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four sisters: Lucy Lemanski, Regina Tyranski, Agnes Hill and Esther McCoy; one brother, Frank Ertman. Funeral mass will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001 at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Smith Corners. The Rev. Stanley Surman will officiate with burial in the St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Parisville. Visitation will be at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly from 2:30 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, and from noon until 1 p.m. on Thursday. Norman Nowicki Norman A. Nowicki, 84, of Harbor Beach passed away Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001 in the Harbor Beach Community Hospital following a long illness. Born in Harbor Beach on April 22, 1917, he was the son of the late Joseph and Frances (Smielewski) Nowicki. Norman and Margaret Siemen were united in marriage on Aug. 31, 1940 in St. Anthony's Church in Helena. He was a member of the Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach where he was an usher for many years. Norman was employed by Brissie Motor Sales, owned and operated Norm's Sales and Service, and was a commercial fisherman for a number of years. In his retirement, he mastered the art of rag rug weaving, enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He is survived by his wife, Margaret, of Harbor Beach; one son, Raymond Nowicki and his wife, Ann, of Woodhaven; two daughters, Stella Osentoski and her husband, Duke, of Harbor Beach, and Dorothy Persons and her husband, Jerry, of Saginaw; eight grandsons, David, Daniel, and Terry Osentoski, Jeff, Chris, and Tom Nowicki, and Rob and James Burkhard; one granddaughter, Beth Fournier; four great-grandchildren, Justin, Erika, Nicholas, and Kyle Osentoski; three sisters, Marion Mausolf and Virginia Leisse of Harbor Beach, and Della Wolschleger of Ruth. He was preceded in death by a brother, Clarence, and a sister, Margaret Groll. Funeral mass will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 19, 2001 in Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church, Harbor Beach. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Clare McQueen Clare McQueen, 77, of Snover died unexpectedly Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, in Lapeer Regional Hospital. Memorial services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, at Kranz Funeral Home in Cass City with the Rev. Ellen Burns of Shabbona United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will take place in the spring in the Elkland Township Cemetery in Cass City. Visitation is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Thursday, October 18, 2001 Harry Roach Harry James Roach, 82, of Bad Axe and a former resident of Alpena and Harbor Beach, died Wednesday morning, Oct. 17, 2001, at Courtney Manor Nursing Home in Bad Axe. Harry was born Aug. 6, 1919, in Detroit to the late John and Florence (Howard) Roach. Harry Roach and Dorothy Hay were united in marriage on July 3, 1943. He owned and operated Huronia Hardware in Lexington for eight years. He also worked as a printer in the newspaper business. He was a member of Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of and former leader of the VFW Post No. 9344 in Harbor Beach. Harry enjoyed woodworking and gardening. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; five daughters, Sharon Jasina and her husband, Stanley, of Romeo, Kathleen Delaney of Royal Oak, Maureen Hall and her husband, Ed, of Omaha, Neb., Patricia Hinds and her special friend, Tom Talaski, Jr., of Bad Axe, and Colleen Ethridge and her husband, Curtis, of Brosely, Mo.; one son, William Roach of Santa Cruz, Calif.; 16 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Maynard; and a brother, John Roach. In keeping with his wishes, a private graveside service will be conducted at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Bad Axe. Cremation took place at Sunset Valley Crematory in Bay City. MacAlpine Funeral Home of Bad Axe is handling arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Parkinson's Association. Marvin Woods A memorial service for Marvin "Roger" Woods, one of the missing and presumed dead in the rubble of the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001, will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, in the Owen-Gage High School gymnasium. Roger graduated from Owen-Gage in 1962. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy while still in high school. He retired from the Navy in 1984. He returned to the Navy as a civilian to become the Director of Communications at the Pentagon, where he worked for the last 10 years. Roger was born in Oak Hill, Ohio, on Jan. 6, 1944, to Willard and Hazel Woods. He is survived by his wife, Betty, of Great Mill, Md.; his mother, Hazel (Woods) Parker of Bay City; one son, James Woods and his wife, Indi, of Navarre, Fla.; two daughters, Terri Hayes and her husband, Robert, of South Carolina and Jennifer Woods of Virginia; one grandson, Morgan; two granddaughters, Lindsey and Shannon; two brothers, Ray Woods and his wife, Darlene, of St. Leonard, Md. and Robert Woods and his wife, Francis, of Davisburg; one sister, Cathy DeLeon and her husband, Tony, of Bay City; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by his father, Willard Woods in 1975. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Navy Relief Society. The service is open to the public to show their support for the victims of the disaster of Sept. 11, 2001. Friday, October 19, 2001 James Oldenkamp James L. Oldenkamp, 93, of Sebewaing, formerly of Owosso, passed away Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, at Sunny Acres Nursing Center with his family at his side, following a long illness. He was born in Grand Rapids on Sept. 29, 1908, son of Harry and Harriett (Liebe) Oldenkamp. He married Dorothy Noftz on Jan. 18, 1936, in Detroit. She preceded him in death on Nov. 20, 1987. Mr. Oldenkamp retired from carpentry work at the age of 78 following many years of building homes in Detroit, Caseville and Pigeon. He built his last brick home in Owosso at the age of 72. He was a past member of the Kilmanagh United Methodist Church and the Zion Methodist Church of Detroit. His survivors include three daughters, Marjorie Elenbaum of Sebewaing, Shirley Streight and her husband, James, of Leesburg, Fla., and Janet Ellis and her husband, Gary, of Leesburg; a son, Ronald Oldenkamp and his wife, Diane, of Kirby, Texas; 12 grandchildren, Tammy Dawes and her husband, Darrell, of Brookfield, Wisc., Todd Elenbaum of Bay Port, Terry Gruehn and her husband, Mark, of Sebewaing, Tracy Schaper and her husband, Les, of Pigeon, Robb Streight and his wife, Beth, of Raleigh, N.C., Laura Taus and her husband, Dennis, of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Mark, Christopher, Ronald, Pamela, Carolyn and Bonnie Oldenkamp, all of Texas; many great- grandchildren; and a special friend, Lorraine Thompson of Owosso. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother-in-law, Sherl "Jake" Elenbaum; and five sisters. Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, at the Kilmanagh United Methodist Church with the Rev. Alger T. Lewis, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Detroit. Memorials may be made to Bay Shore Camp or the Kilmanagh United Methodist Church. Lottie Schott Lottie Mroczek Schott, 86, passed away Monday, Oct. 15, 2001. Lottie was born in Zuawice, Poland, the fifth daughter of the late John and Antoinette (Marzec) Mroczek and was christened Wladzia. In 1922, at the age of 8, the family moved to the United States where an elementary school teacher suggested that "Wladzia" Americanize her name to Lottie. After marrying Edward Schott in 1933, she spent 14 years in Detroit, working and raising her family. They moved to Kinde in 1947 to take over the family farm, where they remained until their move to Arizona in 1975. Edward preceded her in death in 1982. She remained in Arizona until 1991, when she returned to be near her family as her health declined. Surviving Lottie are her two children, Richard Schott and his wife, Cheri, of Plymouth and Carol Whiteis and her husband, Bill, of Iowa City, Iowa; two brothers, John Mroczek and his wife, Betty, and Edward Mroczek and his wife, Marie, all of Kinde; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and 23 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by five sisters, Josephine Gach, Sophie Cheslak, Mary Moore Eustace, and two infant sisters, both named Bernice Mroczek. Mass of Christian Burial took place at St. Edith Catholic Church in Livonia. Interment will be Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Kinde. Ernest Wiegert Ernest "Al" Elden Wiegert, 88, of Caseville died Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 17, 2001, at Scheurer Hospital, Pigeon. He was born March 31, 1913, in Detroit and moved to the Caseville area to raise his family. Al was a mason by trade, building and finishing many buildings in and around Huron County. He was also an excellent machinist, helping his son at his business, Vector Aeromotive, in California, after retiring. He was talented in other ways, as an accomplished jazz musician, playing the vibes and guitar throughout his life. Surviving are his son, Jerry Wiegert and his wife, Brenda, of San Pedro, Calif.; his daughter, Corrine Menko of St. Clair Shores; nine grandchildren; and many great- grandchildren. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001, at the Champagne Funeral Chapel in Caseville. In keeping with his wishes, there will be no funeral services. Elouise Klaska Elouise M. Klaska, 80, of Harbor Beach passed away Thursday evening, Oct. 18, 2001, at Harbor Beach Community Hospital. Cremation has taken place at Sunset Valley Crematory in Bay City. A memorial mass will take place at a later time. Ramsey Funeral Home, Harbor Beach, a Golden Rule Funeral Home, is handling arrangements. 1
