Local obituaries for the week of September 16, 2001 Sunday, September 16, 2001 William Russell William W. Russell, 89, of Elkton died Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, at Sunny Acres Nursing Center. He was born on Nov. 1, 1911, in Detroit to the late William P. and Blanche (Waite) Russell. On July 31, 1937, he was united in marriage to Helen M. Smith in Detroit. She preceded him in death on March 4, 1996. They were married almost 60 years. Bill was quite talented musically. He could play a number of instruments, including the saxophone, clarinet, trombone and violin. While living in Detroit in the 1930s, he had his own radio show on WJR. Bill and his young family moved to Elkton in 1950 and was employed at Meinhold Dairy. In 1965, they moved to Los Angeles, where he worked finishing and upholstering furniture, returning to Elkton in 1977. During his retirement years he continued using his talents, doing upholstering out of his garage. He was a member of the Elkton United Methodist Church, served in the National Guard during World War II. He enjoyed music, especially jazz and the big band sound. Surviving are five children and their spouses, Arnold Russell and his wife, Dee Dee, of Caseville, Ronald Russell and his wife, Marilyn, of Houghton Lake, Barbara Wills and her husband, Tom, of Las Vegas, Cheryl Atkinson and her husband, Dale, of Elkton and Frank Russell and his, wife, Deborah, of Elkton; 15 grandchildren; 14 great- grandchildren; sister, Leah McClure-Periseau. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2001, at the Elkton United Methodist Church. The Rev. Pete Crawford, pastor, will officiate with burial in Riverside Cemetery in Elkton. Visitation is from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Champagne Funeral Chapel in Elkton and after 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Memorials may be given to Sunny Acres or Elkton United Methodist Church. Monday, September 17, 2001 Marie Lamb Marie E. Lamb, 92, of Bad Axe passed away on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, at the Huron Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. She was born on Dec. 30, 1908, in Kinde, daughter of the late Ora and Priscilla (Gratton) Benson. She married Luther M. Lamb on Aug. 1, 1933, in Flint. He preceded her in death on March 22, 1988. She graduated from Kinde High School in 1927. She began her teaching career in a country school and later, after graduating from Eastern Michigan University, taught in Bad Axe, Elkton, and Port Austin, retiring from Port Austin in 1971. Mrs. Lamb was a longtime member of the Bad Axe First Presbyterian Church where she served as a trustee, Sunday School teacher, and Dorcas Circle member. She was a member of the church choir for 47 years. She enjoyed reading, music, and traveling. She was a charter member of the Retired Teachers Association. Surviving are her daughter, Mel Gingold and her husband, Dave, of Mission Viejo, Calif.; two granddaughters, Dawnn Alane of Pacific Palisades, Calif. and Terry Gingold of Santa Monica, Calif.; one great-granddaughter, Madison Laine Zagarino of Pacific Palisades, Calif.; one sister-in-law, Margaret Lamb of Holland. Preceded in death by two brothers, Lloyd and Owen Benson. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001, at the Bad Axe First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Colfax Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the Kaufman Funeral Home in Bad Axe and from 10 a.m. until the service time on Wednesday at the church. Ira Melick Ira Lynn "Wimp" Melick, 71, of Harbor Beach passed away on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, at his home following an apparent heart attack. Born in Harbor Beach on April 3, 1930, he was the son of the late Earl and Elva (Ascher) Melick. On Dec. 16, 1950, he and Beverly True were united in marriage in Harbor Beach. Wimp was a retired employee of Hercules, Inc. retiring in 1992 after working for 43 years. He enjoyed golfing and duck hunting and raising his dogs. He was a sports fan, playing on the Carlings Baseball team in Harbor Beach, the Men's Bowling League, and was a lifetime member of the Harbor Beach Gun Club and was its treasurer for many years. Wimp is survived by his wife, Beverly Melick of Harbor Beach; a daughter, Julie Hernandez of Lakeworth, Fla.; two sons, William Melick of Greenbush and Todd Melick and his wife, Kathy, of Algonac; nine grandchildren; one sister, Edna Kleinknecht of Harbor Beach; and a brother, Keith Melick of Harbor Beach. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Marsha in 1969; a daughter-in-law, Elaine Melick in 1999; two brothers, Wirgil and Orin Lee Melick; and three sisters, Donna Hoffman, Evadine Pickman, and Wilma Kroetch. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001, in the Ramsey Funeral Home in Harbor Beach with the Rev. Clarence VanConant, pastor of the United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Rock Falls Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. today, from 1 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, and noon until the time of services on Wednesday. Irene Santhany Mary Irene Santhany, 79, of Caseville died Sunday morning, Sept. 16, 2001, at her home after a long illness. She was born on April 30, 1922, at the home of her parents, the late Arthur and Mabel (Stirrett) Soper in Bad Axe. On Feb. 19, 1944, she was united in marriage to Nelson J. Santhany at St. Felix Catholic Church in Pinnebog. He preceded her in death on April 6, 2001. Mary was a farm wife who loved to bake. Whenever you went to her house, she was either putting something in the oven or taking something out. She enjoyed the time she spent with her family, especially the grand and great- grandchildren. She was an active member of St. Felix Church and the Altar Society. Surviving are her daughter, Mary Nicholson and her husband, Ed, of Fairgrove; her son, Paul of Gotts Corner; five granddaughters, Cheryl, Wendy, Heidi, Marcy and Lisa; six great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Kelsey, Jacob, Jordan, Hope and Elisha; a sister, Joan Lawson of Souletown; a special niece, Delores Ruth of Kinde and several other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Donald, on Aug. 23, 1999; three sisters, Eleanor Smith, Eulah Keillor and Joyce Merrick; two brothers, Bud Soper and Ward Soper. A funeral mass will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, at St. Felix Catholic Church in Pinnebog. The Rev. Fr. Joseph Schabel will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. A scripture service will be conducted by Sr. Mary Schwartz at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Champagne Funeral Chapel in Elkton. Visitation will be from 2 until 9 p.m. on Thursday at the chapel and from 10 a.m. until the time of services Friday at the church. Memorials may be given to Huron Memorial Hospice or St. Felix Church. Karl Swanson Karl Swanson, 83, of Caseville died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, at his home while under hospice care. He was born on Feb. 20, 1918, at the home of his parents, the late Johan and Anna Mae (Kirchner) Swanson in Turtle Creek, Pa. On April 26, 1941, he was united in marriage to Theresa Schmidt at St. Rita Catholic Church in Detroit. Karl was employed at Burrough's Plymouth for nine years prior to becoming a cost engineer at Ford Motor Co. He retired in 1973 after more than 25 years. He and Theresa began coming to Caseville in 1973 from Redford Township and they moved here permanently in 1990. He was a member of St. Roch Catholic Church, the Caseville Eagles and past member of the Knights of Columbus. Karl enjoyed photography, golfing, fishing, bowling, building model planes and ships and most of all, his family. Surviving are his wife, Theresa; two daughters, Carol Mayra and her husband, Ray, of Caseville, Susan Nigro and her husband, Louis, of Chesterfield; two sons, William Swanson and his wife, Bonnie, of Northville, Robert Swanson of Ypsilanti; seven grandchildren; seven great- grandchildren; a brother Frank Swanson and his wife, Iva, of New Mexico. A funeral mass was conducted at 11 a.m. today at St. Roch Church in Caseville. The Rev. Fr. Tuesday, September 18, 2001 Sylvia Block Sylvia J. Block, 96, of Mio and formerly of Ruth, died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, at the Au Sable Valley Home of Fairview. She was born on Sept. 20, 1904, in Minden City, daughter of the late Anthony and Anna (Jabrowski) Sadro. She married Rudolph Block on April 10, 1922, in Detroit. He preceded her in death on Aug. 20, 1962. She was a graduate of Sts. Peter and Paul School of Ruth. She was former member of Sts. Peter and Paul Christian Mothers and a former member of the Daughters of Isabella. She was a volunteer with the American Red Cross in Gastonia, N. C. She was a current member of St. Mary Parish of Mio and a current member of the American Legion Post Auxiliary No. 8465 of Port Huron. She is survived by one daughter, Beatrice Fenwick and her husband, William, of Mio; four sons, Clarence R. Block and his wife, Fay, of Pacolet, S. C., Raymond J. Block and his wife, Rosemary, of Gastonia, N. C., Donald P. Block and his wife, Barbara, of St. Charles; John E. Block and his wife, Margaret, of Orion; one sister, Delores Stimpfel of Bad Axe; one brother, Marcus Sadro and his wife, Mary, of Minden City; 21 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; 21 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one son, Arnold J. Block; four brothers, Frank, Edward, Herbert and George Sadro; one sister, Margaret Sadro. Funeral mass will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church of Ruth. The Rev. Steven Gavit, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. There will be a Christian Mothers rosary at 7: 30 p.m. and a parish scripture service by Fr. Gavit at 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home of Ubly. Visitation will be from 1:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday and from 9 to 10 a.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Horace Murry The Rev. Horace Murry, 87, of East Lansing and formerly of Zephyrhills, Fla. passed away on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, at his residence. He was born on May 2, 1914, in Salina, Saskatchewan, Canada and came to Akron as a small boy. He was a 1931 Akron High School graduate. On Dec. 28, 1936, Horace Murry and Lena Marra were united in marriage in Akron. He farmed near Deford and managed the Tuscola County farm prior to attending C.E.I. Horace was ordained in the United Methodist Ministry in 1959. He pastored at various locations in Michigan and then at Alturas and Zephyrhills, Fla. He loved his devotional life, reading, and sports activities. He is survived by his wife, Lena Murry; one son, Roy Murry and his wife, Betty, of Holt; one daughter, Geraldine Tibbits and her husband, Lewis, of Sebewaing; four grandchildren, Cindy Adams and her husband, Steve, of Diamondale, Cathy Wirth and her husband, Dennis, of St. Johns, Tamara Shorna and her husband, Mike, of Holt, Todd Tibbits and his wife, Denice, of Lambertville; five great-grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren; one brother, Lyle Murry and his wife, Dorothy, of Sebewaing. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001, at Deford United Methodist Church. Burial will be at Novesta Township Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Lansing or Bayshore Camp. Wednesday, September 19, 2001 Thomas Boris Thomas W. Boris, 68, of Harbor Beach and formerly of Davison, passed away Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at his home under hospice care. He was born in Flint, on Sept. 21, 1932, the son of the late Harry and Agatha (Jacobs) Boris. Tom and Catherine Sylvester were united in marriage on Aug. 18, 1951, in St. John's Catholic Church in Davison. He was a graduate of the Davison High School Class of 1950 and worked for General Motors, AC Division in Flint for 37 years, retiring in 1987 and moved to the Harbor Beach area. In his retirement, he was employed by Dow AgroSciences security and Brennan's Men's Shop in Harbor Beach. Tom was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Helena and was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus Council 4090 of Davison which formed in 1955. He is also a charter member of the Our Lady of Lake Huron Knights of Columbus Council 11,432 in Harbor Beach. Tom also was a member of the Harbor Beach Lions Club. He is survived by his wife, Catherine Boris of Harbor Beach; six daughters, Deborah Jacobs and her husband, Roger, of Harbor Beach, Christine Culver of Indiana, Annie Lang and her husband, Robert, of Grand Blanc, Mary Geraghty and her husband, Timothy, of Davison, Kathryn Hitz and her husband, Andrew, of Texas, Sandra Boris of Harbor Beach; one son, Michael Boris and his wife, Laurie, of Oklahoma; 21 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harry Boris and his wife, Dolores, of Davison and Victor Boris and his wife, Jean, of Rapid River; one sister, Joan Beholz and her husband, Glen, of Flint; and a sister-in-law, Jacqulin Boris of North Branch; and many nieces and nephews. Tom was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Boris; a daughter, Margaret Boris; a granddaughter, Amy Lang; a grandson, Thomas Robert Boris; and a brother, Charles Boris. Cremation took place at Sunset Valley Crematory in Bay City and a memorial mass will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Helena. The Rev. Charlie Hammond, pastor will officiate with internment in St. John Cemetery in Davison. Visitation will be at the church prior to the services. Memorials may be given to the Harbor Beach Lions Club through the Ramsey Funeral Home in Harbor Beach, which handled arrangements. Verna Dobbs Verna M. Dobbs, 81, of Alma, formerly of Cass City, died Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2001, in Masonic Home in Alma. She was born on July 15, 1920, in Lexington to Artemus and Elsie (Kirk) Emeigh. She married Willard J. Dobbs on May 1, 1943, in Bad Axe. Verna attended County Normal for three years and Central Michigan University for two years. She taught piano for 25 years from her home. She was a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Zonta, Trinity United Methodist Church Woman's Society and the Cass City United Methodist Church, the former Trinity United Methodist Church. Verna enjoyed crafts and participating in craft bazaars after her retirement. Verna is survived by her husband, Willard J. "Tom"; children, William D. Dobbs and his wife, Janice, of Holland, Pam Barnes and her husband, Tim, of Kawkawlin; grandchildren, David Dobbs and his wife, Sue, Dennis Dobbs and his wife, Laura, Daniel Dobbs and his wife, Sue, DeAnn Dobbs, Joshua Barnes, Brandi Barnes; great-grandchildren, Danielle, Andrew, Derek, Kimberly, Jared and Tyler Dobbs. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, at Doig Chapel, Masonic Home in Alma with Dr. Phil Rice of Cass City United Methodist Church officiating. Eastern Star services will take place at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 20. Interment is in Croswell Cemetery in Croswell next to her mother. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001 at Kranz Funeral Home in Cass City. Memorials may be made to Cass City United Methodist Church. Jack Fleming Jack A. Fleming, 81, of Harbor Beach and long-time resident of Grosse Pointe, passed away on Monday, Sept. 17, 2001. Born in Detroit on July 8, 1920, he was the son of the late Al and Elsie (Woods) Fleming. He was a graduate of Grosse Pointe High School and the Detroit Institute of Technology. He worked for Chrysler Corp. for 42 years and was director of Manufacturing Engineering when he retired in 1988. Jack was a great sportsman most of his life. He was an active sailor on both water and ice. He was a champion in his class in DIYRA and MORC sponsored events on Lake St. Clair and Lake Huron. Jack was also a snow skier and lived in Beaver Creek, Colo. for 10 years after retirement. Jack and his family attended Knox Presbyterian Church most of his life where he was chairman of the board of elders, chairman of the trustees and chairman of the building relocation committee, which moved the church from Detroit to Harrison Township. Jack is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marian; sons, John and his wife, Carol, and Lance and his wife, Mary; daughter, Mary Ann Kerr and her husband, David; 10 grandchildren: Kristyn, Elisabeth and Amy Fleming, Jason and his wife, Lesley, Kelly, Sarah, and Alex Fleming, and Justin, Lucas and John Kerr; one great-grandchild, Josey Fleming. Since retirement, Jack and Marian have made Harbor Beach their summer home. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001, at the First Presbyterian Church, 405 State St., in Harbor Beach. Jack will be interred at Rock Falls Cemetery overlooking Lake Huron in Harbor Beach. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday at the church. Phyllis Lukas Phyllis A. Lukas (nee Shereda, formerly Kress), 86, of Ubly and formerly of Detroit, died Monday, Sept. 17, 2001. Dear wife of 44 years to Daniel and the late Theodore Kress; loving mother of Barbara Krusinski, Irene Pieknik, and Ted Kress and his wife, Sandra; grandmother of eight; great-grandmother of five. We celebrate her life, love for her family, feisty personality and beautiful dimpled smile. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in White Lake. Visitation is from 1 to 9 p.m. today and Thursday at the Elton Black and Son Funeral Home in White Lake. Memorials may be made to the American Red Cross. Welthy Schadd Welthy E. Schadd, 97, of Filion, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2001, at home. She was born on June 21, 1904, in Sigel Township, daughter of the late Lewis and Ida Carson) Jurgess. She married Clarence M. Schadd on July 31, 1929, in Bad Axe. He preceded her in death on April 22, 1971. She taught school in Reese and in various Huron County grade schools. She was a member of Cross Lutheran Church in Pigeon and the Retired Teachers Association. Surviving are two sons, Clarence Schadd and his wife, Eleanor, of Filion, Earl Schadd and his wife, Evelyn, of Filion; two daughters, Elmira Smithe and her husband, Roger, of Manistee, Marie Leonetti, of Eastpointe; one brother, Lawton Jurgess and his wife, Marcella, of Harbor Beach; 12 grandchildren; and 17 great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Wanda Nelson; three brothers, Floyd, Elsworth, and Lynn Jurgess; one foster sister, Dorothy Karg and her husband, Kelman Karg. Thursday, September 20, 2001 – None Friday, September 21, 2001 Mary McIntosh Mary Margaret McIntosh (Pomella), 91, of Clawson and formerly of Birmingham and Caseville, passed away on Wednesday Sept. 19, 2001, at home in Clawson. She was born on Dec. 10, 1909, in Forestville. Mary Pomella married Lloyd O. McIntosh on May 10, 1931, in Detroit. He preceded her in death in May 1978. Mrs. McIntosh was a woman who was always there for you. She loved her family dearly and held them close to her heart. She was a member of the Guardian Angels Catholic Church, and a former member of the Altar Society at Holy Name Church in Birmingham. Mrs. McIntosh enjoyed being in the company of others. She took pleasure in baking pies and cookies for friends and family especially during the holiday season and loved to fish with her husband at Wild Fowl Bay. Surviving are her children, William J. McIntosh and his wife, Laurel, of Goddard, Kan., Douglas O. McIntosh and his wife, Beverly, of Ann Arbor, Irene E. Miller of Clawson; sister, Lois A. Arbanas of Chicago; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; 14 nieces and four nephews. Services will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 24, 2001, at Guardian Angels Catholic Church in Clawson. Graveside service will be at 3 p.m. on Sept. 24 at Elkland Township Cemetery in Cass City.
