Local Obituaries for the week of February 18, 2001 Sunday, February 18, 2001 Barry David Barry Allan David, 57, of Kalkaska and formerly of Harbor Beach, died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001, at Munson Medical Care Facility in Traverse City. He was born on April 22, 1943, in Harbor Beach son of Norman and Reona (Pine) David. On September 7, 1974, he married Rita Jean Claire. He worked at Turtle Creek Casinos in Williamsburg. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He is survived by his wife, Rita Jean David of Harbor Beach; one son, Barry Norman David of Harbor Beach; two brothers, Lee David of Filion and Dale David and his wife, Betty, of Harbor Beach; several nieces and nephews; and two aunts. He was preceded in death by his parents. A memorial visitation was held on Friday Feb. 16, 2001, at Penzien Funeral Homes, Inc., in Mancelona. Mary Herman Mary B. Herman died Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, in the Carriage House of Bay City. She was born to the late Cyriel and Pharailda (Dafaegher) Matten in Blissfield. Mary was married to John C. Herman who preceded her in death on Oct. 31, 1967. She helped her husband on their Tuscola County farm for many years. Mary was a member of St. Joseph Church, Bay City. She was an avid square dancer and gardener and enjoyed walking. Mary walked over the Mackinac Bridge nine times over the years. She is survived by four daughters, Irene M. Roth of Bay City, Elaine M. Brown and her husband, Robert, of Filion, Maryann B. Borkowski and her husband, Thomas, of Bay City; and Joan M. Kreger and her husband, Carl, of Auburn; 16 grandchildren, Thomas Roth, Kathleen Kennell and her husband, Andy, James Roth and his wife, Mary, William Roth and his wife, Trisha, Randy Brown and his wife, Arlene, Lori Leppek and her husband, James, Dennis Brown and his wife, Tami, Robert J. Brown and his wife, Lisa, Mary Sha Borkowski, Thomas Borkowski, Andrew Borkowski, Elizabeth Belhumeur and her husband, Kevin, John Borkowski and his wife, Trisha, Margaret Borkowski, Jennifer Kreger and Carl Kreger IV and his fiancee, Holly DeVeau; and 27 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Arthur and Oscar Matten and a stepsister Julia Lucio. The funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, in St. Joseph Church, Bay City.. Mary will lie in state in church Monday after 10 a.m. Interment will take place in St. Patrick Cemetery. The vigil prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday in the Trahan Chapel. Visiting hours are from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday and from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the W.A. Trahan Funeral Chapel. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Lions Club Leader Dog for the Blind Program or a charity of the donor's choice. Frances Powers Frances T. Powers, 77, of Caseville died Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, at Covenant Cooper, Saginaw. She was born July 4, 1923, in Grindstone City to the late Joseph and Mary (Andreski) Talaski. In 1942, she married Alex Lapka, he preceded her in death. She lived in the Kinde area until she married Robert A. Powers and moved to Caseville. They were married October 21, 1976, in Bad Axe. He died January 16, 1993. She was a member of St. Edward's Catholic Church, Kinde and attended St. Roch, Caseville until her health failed. She loved her family and enjoyed cooking, canning, gardening, fishing and playing the lottery. She is survived by five children, Mary Deachin and her husband, Randy, of Lake Orion, Connie Clish and her husband, Rich, of Oxford, Margo Connors and her husband, Chuck, of Bad Axe and Lavern Buschlen and her husband, Gary, of Caseville and Joe Lapka of Caseville; 17 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; her brother, Stanley Talaski of Bad Axe; her sister, Cecilia Slack and her husband, Bill, of Bad Axe. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Alex and John, and a grandson, Jeremy Miller. A funeral mass will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, at St. Roch Catholic Church, Caseville. The Rev. Fr. Dennis Kucharczyk will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. Monday, February 19, 2001 Eleanor Fisher Eleanor Fisher, 80, of Port Austin died Feb. 17, 2001, at Mount Clemens General Hospital. She was born on July 12, 1920, in Dwight Township, to the late Leo and Frances (Inda) Goretski. She and Edward Fisher were married on Oct. 28, 1950, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin. He preceded her in death on Oct. 13, 1964. Eleanor was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin and of the Holy Rosary Sodality. She started working at Mayes Level in 1940 and retired from Port Austin Level in 1990. She is survived by one son, Allan Fisher of Harrison Township; one granddaughter, Jessica Lynn Fisher of Harrison Township; two brothers, Marvin Goretski and his wife, Cathy, of Port Austin and Jerome Goretski and his wife, Judy, of Bay City; two sisters, Rita Krajenka and her husband, Edward, of Kinde and Agnes Strozeski of Sterling Heights. Funeral mass will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2001, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin. The Rev. Michael Bell, pastor, will be officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. There will be a parish rosary at 7 p.m. today at Knoblock Funeral Home in Kinde. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the church. Rita Hunt Rita R. Hunt, 75, of Bad Axe died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at her home. She was born on July 2, 1925, in Dearborn to the late Peter and Anna (Zella) Koroleski. She and Herbert Hunt were married Feb. 10, 1045, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Dwight Township. He preceded her in death on June 19, 1974. Rita worked in the 754th Air borne division at Port Austin. Air Force station from 1982 until 1996. She enjoyed her grandchildren and going to garage sales. She is survived by one daughter, Marjorie Hunt of Bad Axe; two granddaughters, Shannon Hunt of Roscommon and Hope Hunt of Gagetown; one grandson, Warren of Gagetown; two great-granddaughters, Brittany and Harley Hunt of Roscommon; one brother, Ralph Koroleski and his wife, Jenny, of Port Austin; one sister, Rosemary Koroleski of Troy; one sister-in-law, Betty Respondek and her husband, Lawrence, of Bad Axe; five nieces, Carol, Patti, Sharon, Lorna, Darlene and Monica; and five nephews, Rapheal, Mike, Larry, Gary and Roual. She was preceded in death by one son, Donald, on Feb. 27, 1993. Funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2001, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Dwight Township. The Rev. Tuesday, February 20, 2001 Elvin Fankhauser Elvin Paul "Al" Fankhauser, 90, of Owosso, formerly of Grindstone City died Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, due to complications after surgery at Memorial Healthcare Center. He was born on Oct. 10, 1910, in Tipton, Iowa to the late Thurmond and Cora (Wagmen) Fankhauser. On Sept. 24, 1966, he married Katherine Sisson. He resided most of his life in Flint. He attended mechanics school in Davenport, Iowa. He attended Calvary United Methodist Church in Flint. Al enjoyed bowling and serving as his league secretary, fishing, watching baseball and helping other people. Most of all, he loved his family and cherished his time with them. He retired after 35 years of service with Automobile Carriers where he was the Parts Manager. He is survived by his wife, Kay; one son, Ernest Lawrence and his wife, Lois, of Kan.; two daughters, Sherrill Wisenburger and her husband, Chuck, of Owosso and Donna Mears and her husband, Tom, of Va.; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one nephew; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Verna, "Butch"; a brother, Bud. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2001, at Nelson-House Funeral Home, 120 E. Mason St., Owosso, with the Pastor Rodger De Vore officiating. Burial will be in Flint Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday with the family being present from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Memorials may be made by the donor's choice. Irving Winkel Irving A. Winkel, 90, of Harbor Beach passed away Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, in the long term care unit of the Harbor Beach Community Hospital. He was born on Nov. 15, 1910, to the late Julius and Ida (Koehn) Winkel. On Nov. 21, 1935, he and Genevieve Siemen were united in marriage in St. Anthony's Church in Helena. She preceded him in death on Nov. 22, 2000. Irving was a retired employee of Hercules, Inc., of Harbor Beach retiring in 1973 after being employed for more than 28 years. Irving also farmed and enjoyed gardening, playing cards and visiting with family and friends. He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Helena and the Men's Club, he was a former usher and was a life member of the Knights of Columbus, Ruth Council. Irving is survived by his children; Shirley Braun and her husband, Earl, of Port Hope, Melvin Winkel and his wife, Joyce, of Perris, Calif., Ilene Parish and her husband, Robert, of Harbor Beach, Robert Winkel and his wife, Jean, of Harbor Beach and Jerry Winkel and his wife, Evelyn, of Bad Axe; 25 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren; two brothers, Art Winkel of Fla. and Ralph Winkel and his wife, Arlene, of Harbor Beach; and a sister, Violet Darling and her husband, Jim, of Filion. He was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Janet Braun and Bruce Parish; two sisters, Mable Holdwick and Esther Holdwick; and by six brothers, Eddie, Julius, George, Harry, Alton and Wilhelm Winkel. Funeral mass will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, in St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Helena with Fr. Charles Hammond, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A parish vigil service will be at 7:30 p.m. following with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 8 p.m., both on Wednesday at the Ramsey Funeral Home in Harbor Beach. Wednesday, February 21, 2001 Kristen Boyle Kristen L. Boyle, 14, of Kingston died Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center, Saginaw from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She was born May 22, 1986, in Saginaw to Michael and Pamela (Allan) Boyle. Kristen was a Freshman at Kingston High School. She participated in volleyball and track. She enjoyed swimming, shopping and spending time with her friends. Kristen hoped to be a marine biologist. Kristen is survived by her mother, Pamela Boyle and her fiance, Harry Perkins; two brothers, Michael Bennett Boyle of Caro and Benjamin Bennett Boyle of Kingston; one sister, Candice Ann Boyle of Kingston; grandparents, Marvin and Elizabeth Lambert of Kingston, Frank and Tonna Boyle of St. Helen and Beverly Allan of Caro; aunts and uncles, David and Michelle Allan of Caro, Newt and Debbie Robinson of Caro; cousins, Lynda Robinson, Michael Robinson, Brian Robinson and Travis Parrish and Tiffany Parrish. She is preceded in death by her father, Michael Boyle and her grandfather, David Allan. Hilda Nieschulz Hilda Emma Nieschulz, 90, of Caseville passed away Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. She was born in Oliver Township on June 30, 1910, to the late William and Dora (Roeber) Licht. On Apr. 17, 1937, she was united in marriage to Edwin V. Nieschulz, who preceded her in death on Aug. 20, 1953. Hilda was a farmer and enjoyed crocheting and needlework. She was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church in Berne. She is survived by a daughter, Carol Holtrop and her husband, Jim, of Bad Axe; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Nieschulz of Bay Port; four grandchildren, Valarie Holtrop and Nathan Holtrop of Grand Rapids, Joseph Holtrop of Bad Axe, and Jessica Holtrop of Harbor Beach; three sisters, Louise Ziegler and Meta Elftman and her husband, Ed, of Elkton and Leona Beck and her husband, Nelson, of Saginaw; two brothers, Barney Licht and Werner Licht of Elkton and Al Licht and his wife, June, of Bad Axe; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Delbert, on July 8, 2000; a sister, Delores Bendrey; an infant sister; and a brother, Ervin Licht. Thursday, February 22, 2001 Jeffrey Knoll Jeffrey Charles Knoll, 49, resident of Verona Township, died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2000, at Huron Memorial Hospital in Bad Axe. He was born on May 18, 1951, in Detroit to Robert and Ruth (Rathbun) Knoll of Verona Township. Jeffrey was a 1969 graduate of Roseville High School. He lived in Roseville, Mount Clemens and then Bad Axe. He was a U.S. Navy veteran on the USS Reasoner during the Vietnam War. Jeffrey was employed as a machinist at Tru-Flo in Ubly. He liked to hunt and fish. He is survived by his son, Garrett Charles Knoll of Verona; his parents, Robert and Ruth Knoll of Verona Township; two sisters, Suzanne Ruth Meyers and her husband, Jeffrey, of Texas, and Rebecca Anne Russell of Roseville; his godparents, Gilbert and Arlene Regentin of Ubly; and five nieces and nephews. Jeffrey was preceded in death by his grandparents, Howard and Mildred Rathbun, Edward and Ethel Knoll. A memorial service will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 26, 2001, at the MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe with the Rev. Kenneth D. Van Dyke, Bad Axe, or donor's choice. Janeel McIntyre Janeel Ardith McIntyre, 56, of Kinde died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at her home. She was born Dec. 31, 1944, in Bad Axe to the late William and Ardith (Merrick) Elliott. Janeel was a graduate of North Huron High School class of 1963. On Nov. 2, 1974, she and Maurice McIntyre were united in marriage. They lived in Lincoln Township for twenty- six years and she was a member of the Kinde First Presbyterian Church. Janeel was a secretary for 12 years, then a library aide for 16 years at North Huron Schools. She enjoyed camping, deer hunting, watching soap operas, country music concerts, and gardening. She is survived by her husband, Maurice McIntyre; one daughter, Michelle McIntyre of Lincoln Township and her special friend, Matthew, of Hume Township; one son, Bradley McIntyre of Lincoln Township and his fiancee, Erin, of Meade Township; one brother, Lynn Elliott and his wife, Janet, of New Baltimore; and four nieces, Jackie, Tammy, Wendy, and Sandra Elliott, all of New Baltimore. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at the MacAlpine Funeral Home-Gage Chapel in Kinde with the Rev. Valerie Fargo, associate presbyter of the Lake Huron Presbytery, officiating. Burial will be in Colfax Cemetery. Memorials may be offered to the American Cancer Society or the Kinde First Presbyterian Church. Friday, February 23, 2001 Ignatz Pionk Ignatz J. Pionk, 84, of Bad Axe died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001, at Huron Memorial Hospital of Bad Axe. He was born Jan. 26, 1917, in Parisville to the late John and Frances (Gosdzinski) Pionk. He married Edith Kappler on Oct. 30, 1943, at Holy Trinity Church of Smith Corners. She preceded him in death on March 3, 1999. He attended the Maurer Country School, farmed with his family and worked in the city doing various jobs. He returned to Bingham Township to farm until he retired in 1993. He was a life long parishioner at Holy Trinity Parish. He loved bingo, dancing and enjoyed family gatherings. He is survived by four sons, Ron Pionk and his wife, Linda, of Bad Axe, Donald Pionk and his wife, Colleen, of Bad Axe, Charles Pionk and his wife, Diane, of Kinde, David Pionk and his wife, Lisa, of Bad Axe; five daughters, Margie Bugenski and her husband, Kenneth, of Port Austin, Shirley Cregeur and her husband, Richard, of Gaylord, Janice Carson and her husband, Edward, of Bad Axe, Diana Kociba and her husband, Gordon, of Bad Axe, Gloria Froede of Cass City; 30 grandchildren; 18 great- grandchildren; three brothers, Elmer Pionk and his wife, Louise, of Ubly, Archie Pionk and his wife, Marie, of Ubly, James Pionk of Bad Axe; two sisters, Rose Lemanski of Ruth, Susie Peruski of Bad Axe; one daughter-in-law, Laurie Pionk of Saginaw; two sisters-in-law, Grace Roberts of Warren, and Beatrice Osantoski and her husband, Martin, of Bad Axe. He was preceded in death by one son, Richard Pionk; four brothers, John, Clarence, Sylvester and Stanley Pionk; three sisters, Anna Susalla, Lucy Osentoski, and Selma Grifka. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at Holy Trinity Church of Smith Corners. The Rev. John Weis, pastor, will officiate. There will be a parish wake service at 8 p.m. today at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly. Burial will be in the church cemetery in the spring. Visitation will be from 1 to 9:30 p.m. today and from 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. 1
