Local Obituaries for the week of April 29, 2001 Sunday, April 29, 2001 Ruth Brown Ruth Brown, 88, of Port Austin died Sunday, April 22, 2001, at Courtney Manor, Bad Axe. She was born March 3, 1913, at the home of her parents, the late Harry and Gertrude (Hacker) Waller in Detroit. On Aug. 22, 1932, she was united in marriage to John Brown in Indiana. He preceded her in death on Jan. 21, 1988. Ruth was a homemaker her entire life. She was a member of the United Protestant Church in Port Austin. She and her husband moved to their summer cottage in Port Austin from Detroit after his retirement in 1987. Ruth loved wildlife and nature and dining out with family and friends. She is survived by one daughter, Barbara Evens of Oak Beach and one grandson, Tom, and his wife, Maryjane Evans, of Orlando, Fla. She was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Waller on Oct. 19, 2000. Private family services will be conducted by the Rev. Robert Garrett at a later date. Funeral arrangements are by Champagne Funeral Chapel, Caseville. John Camarata John Camarata, 86, of Caseville died Friday morning, April 27, 2001, at Covenant Harrison Hospital, Saginaw. He was born Aug. 9, 1914, at the home of his parents, the late Vincenzo and Bartala (Vertrano) Camarata in Detroit. On Oct. 2, 1936, he was united in marriage to Bernadette C. Krause in Ferndale. John worked in the Shipping and Receiving Department of the Ford Motor Co. for over 35 years, retiring in 1971. He and his wife then moved to Caseville in 1972 from Warren. He was a member of St. Roch Catholic Church and the Caseville Rod and Gun Club. John loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, horseshoes and bowling. Surviving are his wife, Bernadette; two sons, James and his wife, Maryann, of Sterling Heights, and Richard and his wife, Gladys, of St. Clair Shores; one daughter, Barbara Ann LaPorte, and her husband, Rocky, of Standish; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Bosco, of Grosse Isle. A funeral mass will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, April 30, 2001, at St. Roch Catholic Church, Caseville. The Fr. John Weis will officiate with burial in St. Roch Cemetery. A parish scripture service will be conducted at 7 p.m. tonight at the Champagne Funeral Chapel, Caseville. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today. Eleanor McCaslin Eleanor Irene McCaslin, 82, of Port Austin died Wednesday, April 25, 2001, at her home after a short illness. She was born on Nov. 11, 1918, in Ubly, daughter of the late Victor and Pauline (Kaliszewski) Brzezinski. She and Clark McCaslin were married on Feb. 16, 1941 in Ubly. Eleanor enjoyed playing playing bingo, euchre, crosswords and reading. She was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary in Port Austin, the U & I Club, and St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin. She is survived by her husband, Clark; and several nieces and nephews, Janice Hill and her husband, Gordon, of Port Austin; Barbara Krull and her husband, Jim, of Durand; Marshall Brzezinski and his wife, Ruth, of Fenton; Rickey Brzezinski and his wife, Joann, of Davison; David Mazure and his wife, Lorraine, of Tampa, Fla.; Diane Lasceski and her husband, Tom, of Port Austin; Myron Mazure and his wife, Toni, of Ubly; Debra Mazure of Harbor Beach; and William Mazure and his wife, Elaine, of Harbor Beach. She was preceded in death by her brother, Floyd Brzezinski, and her step-sister, Mary Mazure. Funeral mass was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 5, 2001, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin. Arrangements are being handled by the Knoblock Funeral Home in Kinde. Edna Peters Edna Marie Peters, 80, of Palms died unexpectedly on Friday, April 27, 2001, in Port Huron Hospital. She was born July 25, 1920, in Minden City, daughter of the late Bernard "Barney" and Martha (Guigar) Roberts. She married Albert W. Peters on Feb. 10, 1945, at St. Patrick Catholic Church of Palms. He preceded her in death on June 22, 1989. She lived in Minden City and the Palms area most of her life with her family. Edna was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a member of St. Patrick Church of Palms. She was a member of the Deckerville Community Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed cards, quilting, sightseeing and visiting with her grandchildren, family, and friends. She attended Minden City High School. She is survived by four sons, Gary and his wife, Terry, of Holly; Richard and his wife, Linda, of Lake Orion; Dennis of Lapeer; Donald and his wife, Karen, of Washington; three daughters, Nancy Thompson and her husband, Richard, of Holly; Karen Bungart and her husband, John "Jack", of Deckerville; Sherry Abbott and her husband, David, of Deckerville; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Bea Hunt and her husband, Dick, of Palms; Marge Stocker and her husband, Dave, of Marysville; Fran Swartzendruber and her husband, Don, of Saginaw; two sisters-in-law, Mavis Roberts of Deckerville and Florence Roberts of Ruth; one brother-in-law, Ralph Halifax of Lexington. She was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Douglas Peters and Doug Bungart; four brothers, John, Clarence, Bernard, and Elmer Roberts; one sister, Stella Halifax; and her sister-in-law Mabel Roberts. Alfred Reimann Alfred Joseph Reimann, 77, a well-known Lincoln Township farmer, died Friday, April 27, 2001, at Huron Memorial Hospital following an extended illness. Mr. Reimann was born Aug. 29, 1923, in Bad Axe. He was the son of the late William and Florence (Gay) Reimann. He and Miss Violet Zehr were united in marriage Oct. 29, 1948, at the Bad Axe First United Methodist Church. The couple celebrated 52 years of marriage last October. Mr. Reimann was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Kinde. He served as elder for many years. He served as a Lincoln Township trustee, and with the Kinde Area Fire Department. He and his brother, Deward, owned and operated their excavating business, Reimann Brothers Excavating, for a number of years. As an outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing, the deer, and his trout pond; and visiting with his family and friends. Surviving are his wife, Violet; one daughter, Connie Creamer, and her husband, Fred, of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; one son, Keith Reimann, of Boston; two granddaughters, Tiffany and Courtney Creamer; and two step-grandsons, Scott and Hans Creamer; one brother, Deward Reimann and his wife, Frieda, of Filion; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Reimann was predeceased by two sisters, Florence Snyder and Leona Breen; and three brothers, Orrie Reimann, Lloyd Reimann, and Wilfred Reimann. Funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Monday, April 30, 2001, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Kinde. The Rev. Richard G. Wilson will officiate. Burial will take place at Colfax Township Cemetery, Bad Axe. Junior Robinson Junior Robinson, 77, of Caseville died Friday morning, April 27, 2001, at Riverbend Nursing Center, Grand Blanc, after a long illness. He was born April 29, 1923, at the home of his parents, the late Thomas and Fern (Scott) Robinson in Snover. He grew up in northern Sanilac County and attended Lang Country School. He served in the Army from 1948 to 1951 and was stationed in Korea. On Nov. 29, 1952, he was united in marriage to Shirley Ann Bukowski at St. Joseph Church in Argyle. They lived in Imlay City most of their married life. Junior was an engineer at GM for 14 years, retiring on April 19, 1982. He had worked at Champion Homes in Dryden for over 14 years before going to GM. On March 6, 1982, he and his wife moved from Sterling Heights to Sand Point. He was a member of St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and the Caseville Eagles. He and his wife enjoyed Florida in the winter months. He also enjoyed fishing and gardening. He especially loved maintenance work and neighbors would bring things over to be fixed. He passed those skills on to his children. Surviving are his wife, Shirley; one son, Gary Robinson and his wife, Lois, of Lapeer; one daughter, Nancy Martilla and her husband, Marvin, of Lapeer; three grandchildren, Trisha and Bob Robinson, and Brandon Martilla, all of Lapeer; three great-grandchildren, Austin, Amber, and Ashley; one sister, Lola Foote of Pigeon. Preceding him in death were his brothers, Harold, Clark, Glen, Melvin, Wayne, Delbert, Merle, and Clarence; and four sisters, Angeline Robinson, Ada Roberts, Thelma Boglitch, and his twin sister, June Temple. Torres, 80, of Elkton died Thursday afternoon, April 26, 2001 at the Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. She was born May 29, 1920, at the home of her parents, the late Francisco and Francisca (Rodriguez) Robles in San Antonio, Texas. On Dec. 11, 1943, she was united in marriage to George Torres at St. Agatha Church in Gagetown. He preceded her in death on April 6, 2000. Julia was a member of St. Francis Borgia Church and taught catechism there for many years. She enjoyed her children and grandchildren, loved to cook, bake, sew, flower gardening, dancing, music and reading. Surviving are five sons, George and his wife, Cathy, of Fort Worth, Texas, Joseph of Elkton, Thomas of Pigeon, Richard and his wife, Pollyana, of Cadillac, and James and his wife, Martha, of Bad Axe; three daughters, Lenore Torres of Madrid, Spain, Delores Leonard of Bad Axe, and Carmen Nugent and her husband, Don, of Granger, Ind.; 21 grandchildren, Kelly, Frank, Amy, Michel, Eric, Tommy, James, Jessica, Christina, Julia, Danielle, Theresa, Alex, Tim, Ashton, Angelica, Jimmy, Andre, Joey, Jacqulyn, and Nicholas; two great-grandchildren, Andrea and Sandra; three sisters, Inez Torres of Lapeer, Emma Day and her husband, Fran, of Grand Ledge, and Isabelle Robles of Carson City; four brothers, Louis Robles and his wife, Geraldine, of Elkton, Leo Robles and his wife, June, of Diamondale, Alex Robles and his wife, Bertha, of Charlotte and Frank Robles and his wife, Cathy, of Tuscon, Ariz. Nicholson Wade Nicholson "Nick" Gooding Wade, 88, of Akron and formerly of Indianapolis, died Thursday, April 26, 2001, at Brittany Manor in Midland. He was born Aug. 31, 1912, in Indianapolis, son of the late Frank B. and Ethel A. (Nicholson) Wade. He graduated from Shortridge High School, attended Purdue University, and earned his BS degree in mechanical engineering from Tri-State University. Mr. Wade was a mechanical engineer for the Citizens Gas and Coke Utility Co. in Indianapolis for many years. He was a member of Delta Chi Fraternity, Kiwanis Club, Masonic Lodge, Shrine Club, and the Scientech Club of Indianapolis. He was a member of the First Friends Church and most recently, a member of St. Andrew's United Methodist Church in Syracuse, Ind. He is survived by his daughter, Janet Elizabeth Karr of Akron; son James Nicholson Wade and his wife, Debbie, of Hilliard, Ohio; grandchildren Eric Karr of Akron, Brett Wade of Hilliard, Renee Wade of Columbus, Ohio, Eric Weed and Amanda Weed, both of Hilliard. In addition to his wife, Mary (Gunsett) Wade, he was predeceased by his sister, Lucille Wade. Dorothy Zatell Dorothy Zatell, 88, former member of Lathrup Village, Mich., died Thursday, April 26, 2001, at Courtney Manor Nursing Center in Bad Axe. She was born March 19, 1913, in Detroit. She was the daughter of the late Ernest and Fredericka (Maltz) Hauck. Miss Dorothy Hauck and Vincent Zatell had been married over 55 years when Mr. Zatell preceded her in death on July 30, 1997. Mrs. Zatell was a member of St. Bede's Catholic Church, Southfield. She attended college in Detroit, was a member of the Women's Club of Lathrup Village, and the Garden Club. She enjoyed reading, painting, and visiting with her family and friends. She wrote articles for the Birmingham Observer & Eccentric Newspaper, and taught painting from her home studio. Surviving are one son, Jeffrey Zatell and his wife, Denise, of Bad Axe; three grandchildren, Christine Zatell of Macomb Township, Melinda Zatell of Shelby Township, and Joel Zatell of Pontiac; two great- grandchildren; and two sisters, Virginia Marks and her husband, Edward, of Clearwater, Fla., and Jean Conant of Arizona. Monday, April 30, 2001 Phoebe Terbrack Phoebe C. Terbrack, 95, of Frederic and formerly of Harbor Beach, passed away Sunday, April 29, 2001, in Mercy Hospital in Grayling following a short illness. Born in Saskatchewan, Canada, on April 30, 1906, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Rose (Delaney) Spitza. She and Mike Kramer were married in August 1924 in Harbor Beach, and he preceded her in death in May 1950. Phoebe then married Lawrence Terbrack in May of 1957, and he preceded her in death in August of 1986. Phoebe was a former employee of the Huron Laundry Cleaners, working there for more than 30 years, and she helped her husband farm. She enjoyed gardening, sewing and playing cards. Phoebe was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ruth. She is survived by a daughter, Johanna Page and her husband, Clarence, of Frederic; a son, Sebastian Kramer of Titusville, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and two great-great- grandchildren; two brothers, Bill Spitza of Ann Arbor and James Spitza and his wife, Maxine, of Bellaire; two sisters, Rose Kresic of Gaylord and Mary Matusik of Flint; a daughter-in-law, Bertha Kramer of St. George, Ga.; a son-in-law, Charles Piper. Maust, 77, of Pigeon passed away Sunday morning, April 29, 2001, at Scheurer Hospital Long Term Care Unit in Pigeon. He was born on Nov. 15, 1923, in Bay Port, son of the late Richard and Elizabeth "Lizzie" (Gunden) Maust. He attended and graduated from the Snell Rural School. On Aug. 11, 1946, he was united in marriage to Pauline Grace Fisher at Kalona, Iowa. She preceded him in death on Jan. 29, 1995. Mr. Maust was a farmer throughout his lifetime. He was an active, faithful member of the Pigeon River Mennonite Church. He is survived by two daughters, Martha Maust-Brown and her husband, Larry, of Michigan City, Ind., and Rebecca Maust and her husband, Paul Sparrell, of Greensboro, N.C.; three sons, Gary "Redford" Maust and his wife, Elizabeth, of Elkhart, Ind., Larry Maust of Sarasota, Fla., and Tim Maust and his wife, Stephanie, of Bay Port; seven grandchildren, Justin and his wife, Jenny, Seth and his wife, Sarah, Casey, Shelby, Zachary, Cory, and Carlene; three sisters and two brothers, Doris Basinger and her husband, Clair, Fern Brunk, Josephine Musser, and Clayton Maust and his wife, Thelma, all of Harrisonburg, Va., and Wilbur Maust and his wife, Miriam, of Salem, Ontario, Canada; and numerous nieces and nephews. Wednesday, May 2, 2001 Gladys Wallis Gladys (Somerville) Wallis, 79, of Kingston died Monday, April 30, 2001, at her daughter's home in Freeland. Mrs. Wallis lived in Kingston and was previously from the Decker area. She was born Nov. 5, 1921, in Bad Axe, daughter to the late John and Maude (McIllmurry) Ballagh. She married John J. Somerville April 14, 1945, in Juhl. He passed away April 24, 1980, and she remarried Harold Wallis July 25, 1987, in Caro. He preceded her in death July 1, 1993. She worked as a housekeeper at Tender Care in Cass City and she also farmed. Mrs. Wallis was a member of the Kingston United Methodist Church and former member of the Decker Extension Group. She enjoyed playing bingo with her friends and most of all, she enjoyed her family. She is survived by two sons, Gary Somerville and his wife, Catherine, of Kingston and James Somerville of Decker; two daughters, Roxy Sova and her husband, Tom, of Freeland, Maryann Ellery and her husband, Michael, of Harrison; brother, Lorene Ballagh of Pigeon; sister Eva Blaylock of Bad Axe, sister-in-law Mildred Ballagh of Three Rivers; four grandchildren, John Somerville and his wife, Theresa, of Unionville, Julie Ruggles and her husband, Tim, of Kingston, Joe Somerville and his wife, Kristy, of Gaylord, Jermery Somerville of Kingston; two step-grandchildren, Bill Sova and his wife, Patty, of Freeland, and Lori Finney and her husband, Ed, of Freeland; seven great-grandchildren and four step-great- grandchildren. Weisenberg, 91, of Sebewaing died unexpectedly on Tuesday, May 1, 2001, at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon. He was born July 16, 1909, in Saginaw, son of the late August M. and Hilda (Huebner) Weisenberg. He was united in marriage to Hazel E. Errer on June 27, 1931, in Detroit. Russ was employed at the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad in Saginaw for 37 years before retiring in 1971. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sebewaing. Surviving are his wife, Hazel; one son, Russell L. Weisenberg and his wife, Debra, of Bonita Springs, Fla.; one daughter, Audrey E. Melvin and her husband, Wilbert, of Washington, Pa.; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Luella Utich of Sterling Heights and Donna Hessler of Sebewaing; several nieces and nephews. Gyomory, 85, of Cass City died Tuesday, May 1, 2001, in Hills & Dales General Hospital in Cass City. He was born Feb. 16, 1916, in Detroit to Daniel and Lydia (Toth) Gyomory. He married Mary Laslo on Sept. 13, 1941, in Detroit. She died Sept. 14, 1984. Daniel worked for the elevator in Cass City for many years, retiring in 1978. He was a member of the Cass City Masonic Tyler Lodge No. 317. Dan was a handyman and enjoyed repairing appliances. He enjoyed bowling and loved golfing. He is survived by his children, Jim Gyomory and his wife, Shelly Drake, of Middlebury, Ind., Jean Murphy and her husband, Michael, of Cass City; grandchildren, Brian Gyomory and his wife, Noelle, Darin Gyomory and his wife Linda True, Paul Murphy, David Murphy, Shelly's daughter, Erin Drake; great grandchildren Claire Gyomory, Linda's daughter, Tara Fishback; brother Louis Gyomory and his wife, Mary, of Kingston, daughter-in-law, Judy Gyomory of Cass City; special friend, Kathleen Auvil of Cass City; and nephew, John Gyomory of Lapeer. Carol Kaufman Carol Marie Kaufman, 49, of Port Hope, passed away on Tuesday at War Memorial Hospital in Sault St. Marie. She was born on Nov. 5, 1951, in Harbor Beach, daughter of Nathan and Doris (Schave) Kaufman. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Port Hope and the Kinde Bowling League and a member of the Port Hope High School Class of 1969. She was employed by Sensient Flavor Inc. in Harbor Beach. She is survived by parents Nathan and Doris Kaufman of Port Hope; two nieces, Jennifer Iseler and her husband, Brian, of Essexville and Jodi Eggert of Macomb Township; one nephew, Casey Eggert of Port Hope; one brother-in-law Arnie Eggert of Port Hope. She was preceded in death by one sister, Diane Eggert; paternal grandparents, Carl and Mabel Kaufman; maternal grandparents, Paul and Beatrice Schave. Beaver, 65, of New Baltimore passed away Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at home. Rae was born May 29, 1935, in Kinde, the daughter of the late Theodore and Frances Schubert. On Sept. 27, 1952, she married Orval Beaver in Sacred Heart Church in Bad Axe. She retired in 1990 after 30 years as credit secretary for Sun Oil Company. Rae is survived by her husband Oral; daughter Jane Redford of Waterford; son Frederick Beaver and his wife, Maureen, of New Baltimore; grandchildren Charles, Chad, Maxwell and Miles; sisters Caroline Maurer and her husband, Haven, of Ubly, Angeline Waddell and her husband, Donald, of Springfield, Ill., Lillian Rooney and her husband, Gary, of Armada; step-father Martin Osentoski of Bad Axe. She was preceded in death by her daughter Mary Elizabeth; grandson baby Bryan Beaver. Indo, 87, resident of Grindstone City, died at his home, Thursday, May 3, 2001, following an extended illness. Mr. Indo was born Feb. 20, 1914, in Grindstone City, son of the late John and Gertrude (Yaroch) Indo. Alvin and Miss Elsie M. Rothe were united in marriage at St. Michael's Catholic Church Rectory, Port Austin, on Feb. 15, 1941. The couple celebrated 60 years of marriage this past February. Mr. Indo graduated from the Grindstone City School. He was employed in Detroit for a time, then returned in 1969 to live in Grindstone City. He farmed, raising cattle and horses. He enjoyed gardening and visiting with his family and friends. Surviving are his wife, Elsie; two sisters, Marie Pitrollo of Detroit, and Oveda Rice of Port Austin; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Indo was preceded in death by an infant brother, Joseph Indo; one sister, Irene Pitrollo, and a brother-in-law, Elmer Rothe. Gorang, 79, life-long resident of Verona Township, Bad Axe, died Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at Huron Memorial Hospital, Bad Axe. He was born Jan. 12, 1922, in Bad Axe; son of the late Dominick and Anna (Wagner) Gorang. Mr. Henry Gorang and Miss Thelma McDonald were united in marriage on May 4, 1946, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Bad Axe, with Msgr. Charles A. Roark officiating. Henry attended the Bad Axe Public Schools; and was employed by Fairmont Foods, Bad Axe Public Schools, Pigeon Manufacturing, and Moco Thermal Industries, Caseville. He enjoyed bowling, playing cards, and visiting with his family and friends. Surviving are his wife, Thelma Gorang; one daughter, Maureen Duggan and her husband Dennis of Bad Axe; two sons, William Henry Gorang and his special friend, Belma Schmidt, of Caseville, and Larry David Gorang and his wife, Diana, of Bad Axe; eight grandchildren, Anita Majkowski and her husband, Dan, Aaron Gorang and his wife, Jamie, Dennis, Kristie, and Tanya Duggan, Amber, Dominick, and Felicia Gorang; three great-grandchildren, Kamden Gorang, and Jacob and Jordan; one sister, Margaret Balint and her husband, Steve, of Bad Axe; one brother, John Gorang and his wife, Betty, of Oakland; two sisters-in-law, Myrtle Gorang of Saline, and Lena Baumert of California. Taylor, 65, of Oak Beach, passed away on Thursday, May 3, 2001, following an extended illness. John was born Sept. 26, 1935, in Detroit, son of the late Frank H. and Dorothy (Nigh) Taylor. John H. Taylor and Miss Sharon A. (Baur) Jones were united in marriage on Sept. 1, 1987, in Sterling Heights. The couple lived in Warren for nine years and since 1996, have lived in Oak Beach. He was a Bad Axe High School graduate, class of 1953. He attended General Motors Institute. John was a U.S. Army Veteran. He and his wife attended the Caseville United Methodist Church. Mr. Taylor was employed by the Detroit Edison Company of Detroit. After forty years of service, he retired in 1998, from the newly established Cass City District as their supervisor. He was a Board Member and Trustee of the Huron County Community Foundation, and was a member of the Bird Creek Golf Course, Port Austin. John enjoyed visiting with his family and friends, golfing, fishing, and playing cards. Surviving are his wife, Sharon, of Port Austin; two daughters, Pam Penkala and her husband, Ronald, of Sterling Heights, Dorothy Powell and her husband, Mike, of Sterling Heights; five grandchildren, Kathleen Penkala, Joseph Penkala, Timothy Kolanowski, Kimberly Kolanowski, and Shannon Powell, all of Sterling Heights. Also surviving is his step-mother, Mary Taylor of Pigeon; two step-sons, Brian Jones and his wife, Kim, of Lakeland, Fla., and Bruce Jones and his wife, Sheryl, of Alpharetta, Ga.; two step-grandsons, Morgan and Noah Jones; and one step-granddaughter, Sophia Jones. Mr. Taylor was preceded in death by his mother and father, and an infant son, John. A Funeral Memorial Service will take place on Saturday, May 5, 2001, at the Caseville United Methodist Church. Rev. Jack Lackie Jack Lackie, 91, died this morning, Friday, May 4, 2001, at Sunny Acres Nursing Center in Bad Axe.
