HURON DAILY TRIBUNE, Bad Axe, Huron County, Michigan Local Obituaries for the week of January 28, 2001 Monday, January 29, 2001 Miller Potts Miller H. Potts, 89, of Lincoln Township near Filion and former resident of Hazel Park, died on Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at the home of his daughter, Guydeane Kirkpatrick. Miller was born on Oct. 23, 1911, in Bement, Mo. He was the son of the late Guy and Bertha (Daniels) Potts. Miller H. Potts and Miss Francine B. Presson were united in marriage on Nov. 24, 1934. Mrs. Miller preceded her husband in death on Jan. 3, 1995. Miller was employed by the Wallock Lumber Co. in Detroit and was member of the Teamsters Union. After his retirement, he and his wife, Francine, moved to the Filion area. He was frequently in the company of Jim Jelinek - a Filion beekeeper - tending his bees. Mr. Potts was a member of the Kinde, Bad Axe and Port Hope senior citizens clubs, the Huron County Farm Bureau. He was a bingo caller. Miller enjoyed visiting with his family and friends, bowling at the Monday Senior Bowling League and spending time at the Sandusky Dance Clubs. Mr. Potts is survived by two daughters, Guydeane Kirkpatrick of Kinde and Constance Brown and her husband, Billy, of Fair Oaks, Texas; seven grandchildren, Dean Kirkpatrick and his wife, Maureen, of Kinde, Ronald Kirkpatrick and his wife, Andrea, of Kinde, Brad Kirkpatrick and his wife, Amy, of Au Gres, Lisa Iden and her husband, Craig, of Kinde, Billy Brown and his wife, Diana, of Lakeland, Fla., Elizabeth Brown of Fair Oaks, Texas and Nicole Brown of Corpus Christi, Texas; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Maude Galightly and her husband, Clarence, of Cahokia, Ill.; two sisters-in-law, Joan Skobel and her husband, Wayne, of DeSota, Ill. and Esther Presson of Olney, Ill.; special friend, Irene Polega of Kinde. Miller was also preceded in death by one brother, Russel Potts. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at the MacAlpine Funeral Home- Gage Chapel in Kinde. The Rev. Jay Barsaleau, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Bad Axe will officiate. Burial will take place in the New River Cemetery. Visitation is from 1 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday and from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Huron Memorial Hospice at 1100 South Van Dyke Road, Bad Axe, MI 48413. Arnold Jedele Arnold E. Jedele, 76, died unexpectedly on Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at his home. He was born on Nov. 4, 1924, in Sebewaing, son of the late Frederick P. and Emma R. (Winter) Jedele. Arnold was a self-employed carpenter in the Sebewaing area for many years. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church on Berne Road in Pigeon. He also was an avid woodworker. He is survived by many cousins, neighbors and friends. The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing. The Rev. James A. Gorsegner will officiate with burial in New Salem Lutheran Cemetery near Sebewaing. Visitation is from 4 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until the time of the service Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to St. John Lutheran Church or the Frankenmuth Radio Fund. Ervin Wrubel Ervin Roman Wrubel, 76, of Rogers City and formerly of Parisville, died on Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at Tendercare Health Care of Rogers City. Private funeral services were conducted on Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly. The Rev. T.J. Fleming, pastor of St. John Catholic Church in Ubly, officiated. Burial will be in the St. Mary Cemetery in the spring. Tuesday, January 30, 2001 Frieda Ziehm Mrs. Frieda L. Ziehm, 86, of Gagetown passed away on Friday, Jan. 26, 2001. She was born in Unionville on Dec. 24, 1914, the daughter of Henry and Katherine (Thaut) Kruse. She was a lifelong area resident. She married Basil Ziehm, who preceded her in death in 1997. Mrs. Ziehm was a member of the Gagetown United Methodist Church. She is survived by her children, William Burrows and his wife, Nancy, Richard Ziehm and his wife, Evelyn, Donna Salcido and her husband, Thomas, Nora Lee Flores, Phyllis Root and her husband, Michael, and Georgia Condon and her husband, Dennis; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Donald Kruse and his wife, Shirley; sisters, Margaret Beutel, Ella Beutel and Helen Arbuckle and her husband, Eldon; a brother-in-law, Nathan Joles; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Esther Joles. Funeral services were conducted on Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at the Gagetown United Methodist Church with the Rev. Alice Sheffield officiating. Interment was in Grant Township Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Gagetown United Methodist Church. Arrangements were handled by Gagetown Funeral Chapel. Thursday, February 1, 2001 Sylvia Wilson Sylvia L. Wilson, 85, of Harbor Beach passed away Tuesday evening, Jan. 30, 2001, in the long term care unit of the Harbor Beach Community Hospital following a short illness. She was born in Harbor Beach on Feb. 24, 1915, the daughter of the late Lewis and Leota (Sample) Blashill. Sylvia and William Harold Wilson were united in marriage on June 30, 1936, in Harbor Beach. He proceeded her in death on Oct. 18, 1990. She retired from the Harbor Beach Community Hospital in 1977 after being employed there for 17 years. Sylvia enjoyed knitting and crocheting and was a former member of the bowling league. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women's Group in Harbor Beach and the Senior Citizens group. Surviving are a son, Lewis Wilson and his wife, Yvonne, of Oxford; and a daughter, Sharon Fuhrman and her husband, James, of Port Hope; nine grandchildren; 19 great- grandchildren; one sister, Jeanette Rapson of Harbor Beach; a sister-in-law, Peg Blashill of Harbor Beach. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Velma, Cliff, Lloyd, Glen, Raymond, and a twin sister, Hilda. Funeral Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at the Ramsey Funeral Home in Harbor Beach (A Golden Rule Funeral Home). The Rev. Clarence VanConant, pastor of the United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Rock Falls Cemetery, Harbor Beach. Visitation will be from 1-9 pm on Thursday and from 11 am until the time of the services Friday at the funeral home. Phyllis Baugher Phyllis C. Baugher, 79, of Kingston died suddenly on Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, in Fisher Convalescent Home in Mayville. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, in the Kingston United Methodist Church with Dr. Philip Rice of the Cass City United Methodist Church officiating. Visitation is from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home and 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the church. Matthew T. Glandon Matthew Thomas Glandon, two days old, infant son of Chester and Marie, died Sunday, Jan 28, 2001 at Covenant Harrison Hospital of Saginaw. Funeral services will be held today, Thursday, Feb. 1, at 7:00 pm at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home of Ubly. Rev. Charles Hammond will officiate. Burial will be in St. Peter and Paul Cemetery in the Spring. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home of Ubly. Friday, February 2, 2001 Thelma Guza Thelma S. Guza, 79, of Hume Township died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at Huron Memorial Hospital in Bad Axe. She was born Sept. 18, 1921, in Cass City to the late Arthur and Ida (Sullivan) Surprenant. Miss Thelma Surprenant and Mr. Raymond E. Guza were united in marriage at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe by Monsignor Roark on Sept. 2, 1946. Thelma attended Bad Axe High School, graduating class of 1939. She earned her nursing degree in 1947 from the Ford Hospital School of Nursing in Detroit. She worked as a registered nurse at Huron Memorial Hospital in Bad Axe. She was a Huron County Medical Care Facility supervisor, retiring in 1983. Thelma was a member of St. Felix Catholic Church in Pinnebog. She also was a member of the Huron Audubon Society, enjoyed playing cards, and visiting with family and friends. Thelma Guza is survived by her husband, Raymond Guza, of Hume Township; two sons, Thomas Guza and his wife, Deborah, of Caseville, and Joseph Guza and his wife, Linda, of Cass City; one sister, Phyllis Kerr and her husband, Olen, of Black River; two brothers, Donald Surprenant and his wife, Joyce, of Corunna, and Eugene Surpernant and his wife, Berdean, of Port Hope; one granddaughter, Carol Guza, of Cass City; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Ida Surprenant; three brothers, James, Aurther, and John Surprenant; and three brothers-in-law, Tom, Jerome, and Clair Guza. Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at St. Felix Catholic Church. Cremation will take place at Sunset Valley Crematory in Bay City. Burial will be in Colfax Township Cemetery in Bad Axe. There will be a scripture service at 7 p.m. on Friday at the MacAlpine Funeral Home-Gage Chapel in Kinde. Peplinski Mr. Frank A. Peplinski, 93, of Paris Township passed away Wednesday evening, Jan. 31, 2001, at Courtney Manor of Bad Axe. He was born on Nov. 29, 1907, in Parisville to the late Joseph and Lucy (Woyciechowski) Peplinski. He married Jean Montgomery Crudo in 1958 in Detroit. She preceded him in death in 1977. He attended Paris No. 1 Country School. He worked for 30 years at Budd Manufacturing in Detroit before retiring in 1969. He then moved to Phoenix, Ariz., area where he lived for 10 years before returning to Paris Township in 1978. He was a parishioner of St. Mary Catholic Church in Parisville. He enjoyed hunting and euchre. He is survived by one step-daughter, Lucille Prysok, of Southfield; one step-son, Raymond Crudo of Washington state; two brothers, Archie Peplinski and his wife, Regina, of Ruth, and Ernest Peplinski and his wife, Lorraine, of South Lyons; seven sisters, Bertha Vincent of Rochester Hills, Mary Maraj of Scottsdale, Ariz., Emilie Kopinski of Rochester Hills, Irene Zalewski of Northville, Selma Danielski of Ruth, Alma Osentoski and her husband, Ben, of Garden City, and Elsie Peruski of South Lyons; one sister-in-law, Leona Peplinski of Ruth; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Edmund and Elmer Peplinski. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at St. Mary Catholic Church of Parisville. Burial will be in the church cemetery in the spring. There will be a parish wake service at 8 p.m. today by Fr. Charles Hammond at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly. Visitation will be from 1:30 to 9:30 p.m. today and from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Shirley Ruhl Shirley A. Ruhl, 74, of Harbor Beach passed away Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, in the long- term care unit of Harbor Beach Community Hospital following a long illness. She was born on July 31, 1936, in Harbor Beach, daughter of the late Lawrence and Viola (Hunter) Ruhl. Shirley enjoyed children and often babysat for many of her nieces and nephews and friends. She was a member of Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach. Shirley is survived by a brother, Lawrence "Bud" Ruhl and his wife, Barb, of Harbor Beach; a sister, Joan Johnson of Hazel Park; several nieces and nephews; a brother-in-law, Del Gaffke. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Lorna Gaffke and Rita Kanaby. A funeral mass will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, in Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church with the Rev. John Weiss of St. Joseph's Catholic Church officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A parish vigil service will be at 7:30 p.m. today in the Ramsey Funeral Home in Harbor Beach. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and from 9 a.m. until the time of services Saturday at the church. Walter L. Samulski Walter L. Samulski, 76, of Harbor Beach passed away Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at his home following an apparent heart attack. He was born on July 11, 1924, in Detroit, son of the late Louis and Leona (Grates) Samulski. Irene Messing and Walter were united in marriage on Feb. 19, 1944, in Ruth. She preceded him in death on July 16, 1977. Walter was a farmer, formerly owned and operated the Farmer's Tavern in Ruth, and owned and operated the Farmer's Market (the Purple Store) south of Harbor Beach. He also had a grocery truck that traveled throughout the area and had dances and auctions in the Twin Star Barn. Walt is survived by his children, Judy Klee and her husband, Charles, of Bad Axe, Walter Samulski Jr. and his wife, Diane, of Canton, Michael Samulski of Pontiac and Marjorie Dickinson and her husband, Wayne, of Marquette; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Louise Terwilliger of Bad Axe. He was preceded in death by a son, Robert Samulski in 1997. A private family service will be conducted on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, with burial in the Our Lady of Lake Huron Church Cemetery, Harbor Beach. Fr. Harry Sikorski will officiate. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Ramsey Funeral Home in Harbor Beach. William E. Andrews William E. "Bill" Andrews, 75, of Marine City passed away at his home on Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001. Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, in the Marine City United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Donna J. Osterhout officiating. Urn interment will be in Rosehill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Bower-Rose Funeral Home, 222 N. Main St., Marine City, and from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday in the church. Memorials may be made to the "wishes of the family." 1
