Gettel Clarence George Gettel, 82, of Sand Point, passed away tragically on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, along with his wife, Phyllis, and grandson, Seth Schupan, as a result of an automobile accident in Gilford Township. He was born in Bay Port on April 26, 1920, the son of the late Herbert J. and Dora (Schubach) Gettel. After graduating in 1937 from Pigeon High School, he attended and graduated from Michigan State College in 1941. From April 1942 until his discharge as a Captain in February 1946, he served with the United States Army, taking part in the Battle of the Bulge, where he received an air medal as an observer for the artillery. He was united in marriage to Phyllis A. Leipprandt on June 29, 1946 at the Hayes Methodist Church and they celebrated their 50th anniversary in 1996. Clarence farmed for four years until 1950, when the family established the Gettel Implement Co., which he managed until retiring in 1986. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Pigeon, the Pigeon Lions Club, the Farm Bureau, and the Sand Point Association. He enjoyed boating, traveling to visit his children and grandchildren, and MSU sports, especially football and basketball. In addition to his deceased wife, Phyllis, his family includes: his son, James C. Gettel of Longboat Key, Fla.; two daughters, Marian Kaser, and her husband, Vaughn, of Los Osos, Calif., Jeanne Schupan and her husband, Marc, of Kalamazoo; six grandchildren, Ian, Elliott, Shayna, Seth (deceased), Jacob, and Jordan; a sister, Dorothy Parks and her husband, Charles, of Port Austin; two brothers, Herb Gettel and his wife, Doris, of Pigeon, Douglas Gettel and his wife, Judy, of Bloomfield Hills; a sister-in-law, Mary Gettel of Pigeon; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Barbara, and a brother, Loren. Funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 2, 2002 at the First United Methodist Church, Pigeon, with the Rev. Margaret Passenger and Rev. Gordon Nusz officiating. Burial will be in the Grand Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 9 tonight, and from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday, at the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home, and from noon until the service time at 1 p.m. at the church. Phyllis Ann Gettel Phyllis Ann Gettel, 78, of Sand Point, passed away tragically on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, along with her husband, Clarence, and grandson, Seth Schupan, as a result of an automobile accident in Gilford Township. She was born in Bad Axe on Nov. 28, 1923, the daughter of the late E. Theo and E. Lillian (Sturm) Leipprandt. Following her 1941 graduation from Pigeon High School, Phyllis attended Central Michigan College, obtaining her teacher certification in 1943. She taught at the Maxwell School for one year and in Pigeon for two years. On June 29, 1946 she and Clarence G. Gettel were united in marriage at the Hayes Methodist Church and celebrated their 50th anniversary in 1996. Mrs. Gettel was bookkeeper for the Gettel Implement Co. for 20 years, retiring in 1982. She enjoyed traveling to visit her children and grandchildren, gardening, MSU sports, especially football and basketball, and her local club activities. She was a member of the Pigeon Worthwhile Club, the Scheurer Hospital Auxiliary, the Sand Point Association, and Farm Bureau. She also served as a Brownie, Girl Scout and 4-H leader. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Pigeon, as well as the United Methodist Women at the church. In addition to her deceased husband Clarence, her family includes: son, James C. Seth Schupan (Obituary in the Kalamazoo Gazette, Monday, November 30, 2002) Seth N. Schupan, 23, died Wednesday morning, November 27, 2002, in a tragic auto accident with his grandparents. Seth was born September 9, 1979 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the son of Marc A. and Jeanne M. (Gettel) Schupan. He was a 1998 graduate of Portage Northern High School, a 2002 graduate of Northwood University, where he was a Phi Delt, and played hockey at both schools. Seth was loved and admired by his brothers, and loved and respected by his sister. He had the ability to bring warmth to people young and old. Though physically strong, he was always gentle and kind. Seth was always the first to offer a helping hand. Seth is survived by his parents; grandmother, Charlette Schupan of Kalamazoo; sister, Shayna Schupan of Naples, FL; two brothers, Jacob of East Lansing, and Jordan of Kalamazoo; several aunts, uncles and cousins. A Memorial Service will be held 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Congregation of Moses, 2501 Stadium Drive, with Rabbi Harvey Spivak officiating. There will be no visitation. Graveside services for the family only will be held in Jewish Riverside Cemetery. In Seth's memory and out of respect for his grandparents, contributions may be directed to the American Diabetes Association or the Parkinson's Foundation. Burdick St., Kalamazoo, Michigan. Arthur Klucznik Arthur Klucznik, 88, of Port Austin, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, under Hospice Care at Huron Medical Center. He was born on Dec. 11, 1913 in Detroit, son of the late Michael and Martha (Jaskowski) Klucznik. Mr. Klucznik founded and operated Suburban Tool & Machine in Fraser, and upon retiring moved to the Thumb in 1976. He owned Arthur's Sharpening Center in Caseville and Port Austin. He was a member of the Caseville Eagles and a charter member of the Eastpointe Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed playing the organ, painting and fishing. Surviving are four daughters, Judy Purdo of Brunswick, Ohio, Bonnie Rozycki and her husband, Richard, of Grosse Pointe Woods, Karen Chiodo and her husband, Donald, of Sterling Heights, Patricia Marlin and her husband, Richard, of Port Austin; eight grandchildren, Derek Purdo and his wife, Lori, of New Jersey, Brooke Purdo of Chicago, Richard Rozycki of Grosse Pointe Woods, Amy Rozycki of Grosse Pointe Woods, Gregory Chiodo of Boston, Mass., Beth Chabot and her husband, Joe, of Clinton Township, Seth Marlin of Port Austin, Sara Marlin of Port Austin; one great-grandchild, baby Chabot, yet to be born. Dr. Catherine Miller Catherine Lorraine Bourgeois Miller, DC, 77, of Port Huron, passed away Thursday afternoon, Nov. 28, 2002, at Mercy Hospital in Port Huron. The daughter of Sarah Jane White and Phillip Joseph Bourgeois, she was born on April 1, 1925 in Winchendon, Mass. Catherine Miller was a graduate of Gardner High School in Gardner, Mass. She received her BA from Fitchburg State Teachers College, Fitchburg, Mass., and her MA from Boston University in Boston. She taught kindergarten through high school in East Orange, N.J., Amesbury, Mass., Chicago and Bad Axe. She was a graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic, Davenport, Iowa in 1960 where she was a member of the faculty. She later received her diplomate degree from the International Chiropractic Association Council on Chiropractic Pediatrics in 1996. Dr. Miller opened a joint chiropractic practice with her husband, Raymond J. Miller, DC, in Bad Axe in 1962. They both officially retired in 2000. Their practice was recognized for outstanding service to the community in the Thumb area by the Huron Daily Tribune. Over the years, she maintained memberships in the Michigan Chiropractic Society; Board member, Michigan Chiropractic Council; International Chiropractic Association; Founding member, International Chiropractors Association Council of Chiropractic Pediatrics; the Daughters of Isabella, Michigan Right to Life, Huron County Right to Life (former president), St. Anne's Altar Society, St. Stephen Parish of Port Huron, Port Huron Art Museum, the Detroit Institute of Arts and most recently the Red Hat Society Bluewater les Chapeaux Rouge of Port Huron. She is survived by her husband, Raymond John Miller, DC, Port Huron; her daughter, Lorraine Anne Miller of Chicago, Ill.; her brothers, Gilbert Bourgeois, Welmouth, Mass., and Phillip Joseph Bourgeois, Winchendon, Mass.; and cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Edith "Edie" Ann Fay Edith "Edie" A. Fay, 62, of Kingston, died Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, in Marlette Community Hospital under the care of United Hospice of Marlette. Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. today, and 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on Monday at Kranz Funeral Home in Cass City, and on Tuesday from 10-11 a.m. at Caro Church of the Nazarene. Virginia Sageman Virginia Marie Sageman, 72, resident of Bad Axe, passed away at home on Thursday morning, Nov. 28, 2002. She was born Oct. 10, 1930 in Detroit to the late Norman and Violet (Stirrett) Musselman. She married Wally Sageman on Dec. 18, 1948. Virginia was a member of Our Savior Evangelical Lutheran Church. She was a meat packer for several area grocery stores, including McDonald Food and Family Center, Farmer Jack's, Gainor's Meat Packing and Dibbles Store. She also worked for MacAlpine Funeral Home for four years. Virginia enjoyed babysitting, baking, sewing, puzzles, bingo, and visiting with family and friends. She is survived by her husband, Wally; one son, Daniel and his wife, Crystal of Rossville, Ill.; one daughter, Debra Renner and her husband, Duane, of Manistee; two sisters, Donna Hanson of Bad Axe, Barbara Cieslinski of Port Charlotte, Fla., six grandchildren, Richard Will and his wife, Marsha, Tina Will, Michael Will and Sara Will all of Bad Axe, Christina Smith and her husband, Chad, of Hoopston, Ill., Robert Sageman of Alabama; five great-grandchildren, Adam Harp, Mariah Will, Brandon Will and Marissa Hiller all of Bad Axe, and Kylie Smith of Hoopston, Ill. Gaydos, 83, of Marlette, died Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, in Marlette Community Hospital Extended Care. Joseph Katnik Jr. Joseph John Katnik Jr., 83, of Battle Creek and formerly of Pinconning and Cass City, died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, in VA Medical Center Battle Creek. Tuesday, December 3, 2002 Ferdinand Meyer Ferdinand Meyer, 86, of Sebewaing died Monday morning, Dec. 2, 2002, at Bay Shores Nursing Care Center in Bay City following a one-month illness. He was born on May 28, 1916 in Sebewaing, son of the late Leonard and Mary (Wunsch) Meyer Sr. Ferdinand was employed at the Michigan Sugar Company in Sebewaing for 47 years before retiring as house foreman in 1981. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sebewaing and also was an avid gardener. Surviving are two sisters, Alma Stephens and her husband, John, Leah Heiman and her husband, Frank, all of Sebewaing; one brother, Walter Meyer of Harbor Beach; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers, David, Arthur and Leonard Meyer Jr.; two sisters, Anna Koch and Emily Gschwind. A private funeral service will take place later. The Rev. Memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church. Stephanie Wade Stephanie Lynn Wade, 22, resident of Bad Axe, died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, at home following a brave fight with cancer. She was born Aug. 10, 1980 in Bad Axe to Donald Warren and Paula Corrine (Kapanka) Wade. Stephanie was adventurous and found great pleasure traveling abroad. Stephanie was happiest when she was camping, down hill skiing, and enjoying the outdoors with family and friends. Her love for drawing, doing crafts and collecting picture frames and mirrors was evident in her everyday life. Her kindness, positive, giving attitude and love for animals will be remembered by all who knew her. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. Stephanie was a 1998 graduate of Bad Axe High School. She attended Central Michigan University majoring in interior design. She worked for Corner Cabinet in Pigeon. She is survived by her parents, Don and Paula Wade of Bad Axe; one brother, Christopher Wade of Bad Axe; her fiance, Brandon Bender of Port Hope; grandparents, Donald and Lexie Wade of Marysville; Robert and Rita Kapanka of St. Clair; great-grandfather, Allen Schmalz of Harbor Beach; special friends, Dr. Julianne Collinge of Bad Axe, Steve and Deb Schubring of Port Hope, Albert and Janice Bender of Port Austin; several aunts, uncles and cousins. Young, 76, of Elkton died Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Sarasota, Fla. following a long illness. He was born Dec. 14, 1925 in Chandler Township at the home of his parents, the late Arthur and Minnie (Bell) Young. He attended and graduated from the Farver School near their home. Clayton served in the Army Air Force during World War II, returning home in 1945. On April 4, 1946, he was united in marriage to Helen L. Damm at the Pigeon United Methodist Church. They lived and farmed in Oliver Township all their married lives. They started traveling to Florida after harvest in the late 1970s for a few weeks at a time. After retiring in 1987, they began spending their winters there. He was a member of Evangel Life Assembly of God Church in Bad Axe, and in Florida he attended the Sun-N-Fun Community Church in Sarasota. Clayton enjoyed his retirement pursuing his interests and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Surviving are his wife, Helen; his daughter, Patricia Hundersmark and her husband, Fred, of Pigeon; three grandchildren, Todd, Chad and Stacy; sister, Audrey McBride and her husband, Bob, of Mt. Morris; brother, John Young and his wife, Pat, of Harbor Beach; sister-in-law, Daphne Young of Caro; several nieces and nephews and many friends. Preceding him in death were two brothers, George Young and his wife, Rhea, and Gordon Young; and his sister, Betty Levenski. Wednesday, December 4, 2002 Eleanor Meredith Eleanor Meredith, 83, Bad Axe, passed away Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at Saginaw St. Mary's Hospital. She was born Feb. 17, 1919 in Hume Township, daughter of the late Louis and Edith (Stiebe) Fehner. She and Robert C. Meredith were married May 29, 1947 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. He preceded her in death on Jan. 27, 1996. Mrs. Meredith was a graduate of Pinnebog High School. She was a nursemaid in Birmingham and later worked in the Bad Axe office of Drs. Charles and Willett Herrington and Charles B. Morden. She joined the Navy Waves in October of 1943, serving as Pharmacists Mate 2nd Class at the San Diego Naval Hospital and Marine Corps Air Station in El Toro, Calif. She received an honorable discharge in December 1945. Returning to Bad Axe, Mrs. Meredith was a bookkeeper for the Goebel Beer Company and worked at Buckley's Shoes and the Sears Catalog Store before becoming office manager at the Huron County Health Department, retiring in 1982. Surviving are two sons, Darryl of East Lansing, Gary and his wife, Cathy, of Bad Axe; two daughters, Karen McKeon and her husband, John, of Adrian and Linda Meredith of Hale; four grandchildren, Kara and Kyla McKeon of Adrian, and Nathan and Alicia Meredith, of Bad Axe; three sisters, Veronica Rogers and her husband, Richard, of Bad Axe, Theresa Georke of Lakewood, Wash. and Doris Hughes and her husband, Mark, of Freeland; one brother-in-law, Larry Meredith and his wife, Eileen, of Lake Ann; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother, Louis Fehner; an infant sister, Eileen; a half-brother, Clarence Fehner; and a half-sister, Loretta Ruth. In accordance with her wishes, a private family service was conducted Wednesday at the H. W. Weitenberner Funeral Home in Bad Axe. Burial followed at Sacred Heart cemetery. Thursday, December 5, 2002 Ella Hobkirk Ella Hobkirk, 93, lifelong resident of Meade Township and Bad Axe, died Wednesday morning, Dec. 4, 2002, at Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. She was born April 2, 1909 in Bad Axe to the late William and Jessie (Thompson) Hobkirk. She was married to Walter Hobkirk on May 20, 1932. He preceded her in death in 1983. Ella was the longest standing member of First Presbyterian Church. She joined the church at age 14 in 1924. She was a member of the Rose Society and served on the Deacon board. She was active in North Aid, Goodwill, and Merriam Circle. She was a member of the County Board of Canvassers. She enjoyed gardening and was active in Tuesday noon bible study. Ella is survived by three sons, Don Hobkirk and his wife, Charlene, of Saline, Jim and his wife, Bernice, of Houston, Texas and Glenn and his wife, Linda, of Westerly, R.I.; one son-in-law, Floyd Gasta of Bay City; two daughters-in-law, Carole Hobkirk of Bad Axe, Gail Hobkirk of Florida; one sister, Doris Dinkel and her husband, Robert, of Northville; 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter; two sons, Bob and Ernie Hobkirk; one daughter, Alice Gasta; two brothers, William and Chester Thompson; and one sister, Marguerite Moore. Grace McDowell Grace McDowell, 84, lifelong resident of Bad Axe, died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, at Health Source Saginaw. She was born Oct. 26, 1918 in Bad Axe to the late Samuel and Margaret (McTaggart) McDowell. Grace was a member of Bad Axe First Presbyterian Church. She was very active in the church, missions and committees. She was a member in the Merrian Circle. She enjoyed reading and spending time with family and friends. She is survived by one sister, Jean Robertson and her husband, Bill, of Florida; eight nieces and nephews, Kathy Frantz and her husband, Ken, of Howell, Barbara Wolf and her husband, Tom, of Boyne City, Bruce McDowell of Williamston, Margaret Salmonawicz and her husband, Mark, of Royal Oak, Mary Blackall of Holland, Robert Hamilton and his wife, Becky, of Chicago, Ill., James Hamilton of Redford, and Lawrence Hamilton of Gainesville, Fla. Klee Dore, 83, of Palms passed away Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002, at McKenzie Memorial Hospital in Sandusky. Irene was born Aug. 14, 1919 in Harbor Beach to the late Frank J. and Rose (Lautner) Klee. She married Bert Dore on Jan. 28, 1948 at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Detroit. Irene graduated from the Sherman "Pumpkin Center" School. She moved to Detroit where she was married in 1948. She moved to the Palms area in 1954. She has been a parishioner at St. Patrick Catholic Church since 1954. Irene is survived by eight children, Richard Dore of Howard City, Edwin "Ronald" Dore and his wife, Karen, of Deckerville, Bert Dore and his wife, Nancy, of Pollock, Calif., Clifford Dore and his wife, Carol, of Sandusky, Sharon Jurn and her husband, Daniel, of Sandusky, Mark Dore and his wife, Vicky, of Shabbona, Robert Dore of Deckerville, James Dore and his wife, Tracy, of Ubly; 22 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Leo Klee and his wife, Ila, of Ruth, Charles Klee and his wife, Anna, of Harbor Beach, Lawrence Klee and his wife, Marie, of Ruth; one sister, Dorothy Oswald of Ruth. Irene was preceded in death by two infant sons, John and Michael; two sisters, Mary Booms and Helen Nickel; three brothers, Marcus "Bud", Edward and Frank Klee. Funeral mass for Irene T. Klee Dore will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at Sts. Peter and Paul Church of Ruth. The Rev. Steve Gavit, pastor will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9:30 p.m. tonight and from 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturday at Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly. Muriel Garrow Muriel L. Garrow, 87, of Port Austin died Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002, at the Sterling Nursing Center in Sterling. She was born on Jan. 15, 1915 in Tobacco Township, daughter of the late Eric and Sarah (Hughes) Reymore. Muriel married Alfred J. Garrow on Nov. 29, 1933. He preceded her in death on May 3, 1957. Muriel worked at Mayes' Brothers until they left. She then worked as a secretary for the Port Austin Schools for eighteen years. She is survived by two daughters, Joanne Borkowski and her husband, Dave, of Grayling, Beverly Misch and her husband, Don, of Mishawaka, Ind.; eleven grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; three step-great- grandchildren; and one sister, Gertrude Wing of Bay City. She was preceded in death by her son, Alfred Garrow; and her brother Vaughn Reymore. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at the Knoblock Funeral Home in Kinde. Martha Nivison Martha Nivison, 80, of Harbor Beach passed away Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002, in the long term care unit of the Harbor Beach Community Hospital. Born in Detroit on March 24, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Lottie (Stinson) Korv. She and Dr. David J. Nivison were united in marriage in 1941 in Detroit. He preceded her in death on Oct. 6, 1986. Jane enjoyed being with her family, reading, doing crossword puzzles and was thrilled to be hired by Harbor Beach Wire at the age of 75, her first job she ever applied for. She is survived by her children, Louise Moukalian and her husband, Michael, of Grosse Pointe Woods, David Nivison and his wife, Karlene, of Tucson, Ariz., Mary Jane Krim of Tucson, Ariz., Frances Bellanger of Ferndale, Anne Hicks and her husband, Joseph, of Hamburg, Thomas Nivison of Flint, Charles Nivison and his wife, Rhonda, of Harbor Beach; 13 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; her newly found family of six half sisters and half brothers; and her beloved cousin Rollie Sippel. She was preceded in death by two sons, Michael Nivison and Daniel Nivison. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, in the Ramsey Funeral Home in Harbor Beach with the Rev. Gerald Kukla and the Rev. Dennis Cupery officiating. Burial will be in Our Lady of Lake Huron Church Cemetery in Harbor Beach. Albert LeGue Albert LeGue, 80, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, at Heartland of Bridgeport. The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at Hanlin Funeral Home in Vassar.
