Sunday, November 3, 2002 Marie Korman Marie "Bingo" Korman, 79, of Caseville died Friday evening, Nov. 1, 2002, at St. Mary's Medical Center, Saginaw. She was born Oct. 31, 1923 in Detroit to the late William and Lena (Ashwood) Priebe. On July 2, 1981 she was united in marriage to Joseph Korman in Warren. They made their home in the Detroit area until her husband retired in 1982. At that time they moved to their home in Lake Township near Sleeper State Park. She was a very active member of the Caseville Eagles Auxiliary where she was affectionately known at "Bingo" because of her love of the game. Surviving are her husband, Joe; her daughter, Diane Shawber and her husband, Jerry, of Crestline, Ohio; three grandchildren, Wendy Johnson and her husband, Tim, Robert, and Benjamin; a great-granddaughter, Jessica; four sisters, Jeanette and Norma Priebe of Detroit, Helen Fulkerton of Hazel Park, and Margaret Wilson and her husband, Darrell, of Butler, Ind. Preceding her in death was a son, Donald; a daughter, Beverly; and two brothers, Charles and William Priebe. A memorial service will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, at the Champagne Funeral Chapel, Caseville, where the family will receive friends after 11 a.m. Tuesday. Petrat, 96, of Kinde, passed away on Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. She was born on Oct. 25, 1906 in Jerome, daughter of the late Walter and Bessie (Travis) Vickers. She married Arthur Petrat on Nov. 17, 1928 in Detroit. He preceded her in death on Jan. 19, 1998. Mrs. Petrat had been actively involved in her former church and had also taught Sunday School for several years. She enjoyed her grandchildren, flowers, reading and her cats. She is survived by two sons, David Petrat and his wife, Jackie, of Bay City, Frank Petrat of Melvindale; one daughter, Marjorie Cartee of Southfield; 12 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Owen Vickers; and one sister, Fedelma Hart. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, at the Kaufman Funeral Home in Bad Axe. Burial will be in Verona Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. until the service time at 11 a.m. on Monday at the Kaufman Funeral Home. Dorothy Reifert Dorothy M. Reifert, 74, of Warren died peacefully in her sleep Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, in Faith Medical Center, St. Clair, following a short illness. She was born March 5, 1928 in Detroit to Ray and Jen (Howarth) Harbin. She married Elwood W. Reifert on Sept. 26, 1947 in Warren. Dorothy was a member of Immanuel United Methodist Church of East Pointe. She babysat in her home for many years. Dorothy has been visiting her cottage on Lake Huron in Harbor Beach every summer since she was a child. She enjoyed crocheting, and loved watching ice skating on television. She loved her grandchildren and spending time with them. Dorothy is survived by her husband, Elwood; her children, Paul Reifert and his wife, Beverly Kranz, of Chico, Calif., and Sharon Furchak and her husband, Karl, of St. Clair; her grandchildren, Jason Reifert and Jenna Furchak; special adopted grandchildren, Elizabeth Bandy and her husband, David, and their daughter, Aaliyah, of Warren, and Suzette Johns of Warren; her brother, James Harbin and his wife, Judy, of South Branch; her sister, Helen Jones, of Ocala, Fla.; sister- in-law, Marlene Harbin and her husband, Dick, of Marlette; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Ronald and Cecil R. Harbin; and a brother-in-law, Robert Jones. Coltson, 95, of Tonawanda, N.Y., and formerly of Cass City, died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, in Schofield Residence, Tonawanda, N.Y. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, at Kranz Funeral Home, Cass City, with Pastor Lyle Clarke of Cass City Church of Christ officiating. Monday, November 04, 2002 Ena L. Krueger Ena L. Krueger, 96, resident of Bad Axe and former resident of Ruth and Bingham Township near Ubly, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility of Bad Axe. She was born on Aug. 13, 1906, one of twelve children, in Ruth and moved to Bingham Township. Her parents, the late Henry and Mary (Nemitz) Emling were Huron County Pioneers. Ena moved to Bad Axe in 1920. She was a 1924 graduate of Bad Axe High School and then furthered her education at Huron County Normal College. She taught at various country schools, including Verona, 3-Mile, and Kipper Schools. She and Alfred Krueger were married Dec. 11, 1925 in Port Huron. He preceded her in death Jan. 20, 1970. Ena was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bad Axe and was very active in the Presbyterian Women's Association since 1929. She was active in scouting; all three of her sons became Eagle Scouts. She was past president of the Bad Axe Women's Club, Child Study Club, Huron Memorial Auxiliary, and Verona Hills Golf women's division. She was also a member of the P.T.A. and the Band Parent's Association. Large, joyful family gatherings at her home on Irwin Street were commonplace. There was always plenty of good, hearty food to eat. Particularly enjoyed by all were her homemade sugar cookies. She is survived by one son, Paul Krueger and his wife, Nancy, of Watertown, Mass.; one daughter-in-law, Ellen Krueger of Glenview, Ill.; ten grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Ena was preceded in death by her two sons, Donald Krueger and Alan Krueger; her daughter-in-law, Fay (Reichel) Krueger; four sisters, Clara Binder, Lydia Ackerman, Esther Fenske, Freda Hoeft; seven brothers, Christopher, William, Walter, Arnold, Eli, Max and Ernest Emling. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, at the Bad Axe First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jan Dykshoorn officiating. Jose Santos Jose "Joe" Santos, 92, of Elkton died Sunday morning, Nov. 3, 2002, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility. He was born July 7, 1910 in Fresnillo, Zacatecas, Mexico to the late Juan and Fransisca (Carrillo) Santos and moved with them to Michigan in the early 20s. On Nov. 20, 1930, he was united in marriage to Paula Cruz in Corunna. They moved back to Mexico in 1931, and returned to Elkton in 1949. He was employed at Michigan Sugar Company in Sebewaing until 1953 when he took a position at the Wallace & Morley Elevator in Elkton, retiring in 1975. Joe loved being with his family and playing the accordion for them. He also enjoyed playing horseshoes and visiting with his friends at Ty's and Bud's. He was a member of St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church, the Society of Our Lady of Guadalupe and a former member of Local 15298 United Steelworkers of America. Surviving are six children, Esperanza "Hope" Hernandez of Ecorse, Alfredo Santos and his wife, Georgina, of Elkton, Marie Armbruster and her husband, Dave, of Saginaw, Joe Santos and his wife, Wanda, of Cass City, Anita Harrant and her husband, Greg, of Midland and Rosa Klosowski and her husband, John, of Elkton; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He is preceded by a grandson, Johnny Klosowski; a son-in-law, Guadalupe Hernandez; six children; three brothers; and two sisters. Janice Shemka Mrs. Janice Ann Shemka, 54, of Essexville and formerly of Bad Axe and Ubly, died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, at her residence. She was born on Aug. 3, 1948 in Bad Axe, daughter of John Maurer and the late Helen (Weltin) Maurer. She married John Shemka Jr. on Aug. 23, 1969 at Holy Trinity Parish, Smith Corners. He preceded her in death on Aug. 26, 1989. She attended elementary school at St. Mary's Catholic School of Parisville and was a 1967 graduate of Ubly High School. She attended Northern Michigan University for two years. Janice held a number of different positions including doing the parish bulletin at St. John Parish of Ubly. She worked at Seat Belt, was a clerk at Perry Drug Store, was a salesperson at Sweetheart Bridal in Bad Axe, worked as a secretary at Maurer Builders, and was employed as a secretary for the Huron County Board of Commissioners. She was a "go to person" for all of her younger siblings and would say to them "as all of you know, I am right." She collected china, crystal and jewelry. She enjoyed baking, canning and cooking. She sewed her own wardrobe. She is survived by her daughter, Lori Shemka of Eastpointe; her son, Anthony "A.J." Shemka of Pinckney; her father, John Maurer and his wife, Joan, of Ubly; eight brothers, Benedict Maurer of Ubly, Marcus Maurer of Homer, James Maurer and his wife, Jeannie, of Ruth, John Maurer Jr. and his wife, Diane, of Plymouth, Stephen Maurer and his wife, Carlin, of Bad Axe, Joseph Maurer of Ubly, Glen Maurer and his wife, Melissa, of Chesterfield Township, Gary Maurer of Northeast Grand Rapids; six sisters, Marian Holdwick and her husband, Gene, of Harbor Beach, Theresa Mazure and her husband, Michael, of Port Austin, Lucille Recker and her husband, August, of Ubly, Ann Maurer of Waterford, Carol Maurer of Bloomfield Township, Margaret Maurer of Saginaw; brother-in-law, Bill Herford, of Elkton; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Shemka Jr.; her mother, Helen Maurer; and her sister, Pauline Herford. Holly Talaski Holly Lynn Talaski, 20, of Harbor Beach went to be with her Lord Jesus Christ on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor following a year long illness. She was born on Oct. 4, 1982 in Harbor Beach, the daughter of Philip and Lois (Koehn) Talaski. She was a former member of the Happy Gals 4-H Club for 10 years, The Indian Trails Riding Club, the Blue Water Thumb Youth for Christ and the New Covenant Singers. Holly was a member of the Teens With the Truth Theatre Troop through the Huron County Health Department. She was an active and faithful member of the Bad Axe Free Methodist Church and was on the Bible Quizzing Team for 5 years, a Sunday school teacher, a vacation bible school volunteer, and a member of the 1999 Nicaragua mission trip. Holly graduated with honors with the class of 2000 from the Harbor Beach Community Schools where she was a cheerleader for three years and she was a member of the National Honor Society. She currently was attending Saginaw Valley State University in the nursing program. Holly was also an employee of the Glastender Co. of Saginaw. She is survived by her parents, Lois and Philip Talaski of Harbor Beach; her twin sister, Jessica Talaski of Spring Arbor; sisters, Chelsea and Jolene Talaski, both of Harbor Beach; grandparents, Alvin and Gail Koehn of Harbor Beach and Charlotte and Lawrence Kranz of Harbor Beach; great- grandmother, Cecilia Siemen of Harbor Beach; and several aunts and uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Robert Talaski. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002, in the Bad Axe Free Methodist Church with the Rev. Memorials may be given to the annual Nicaragua mission or a nursing scholarship in Holly's name. Tuesday, November 5, 2002 Dale Davis Dale E. Davis, 62, of Bay City died unexpectedly Sunday, Nov. 3, 2002, at Bay Regional Medical Center. He was born on June 9, 1940 to the late Lloyd and Florence (Bouvrette) Davis in Bad Axe. On Nov. 25, 1961, he married Helen Leavine. Dale was employed with GM Powertrain of Bay City for 28 years. He retired in 1992. Dale was presently working part-time with Bay Auto Auction. He was a member of St. Hyacinth Church, the PLAV Post No. 162, the Fraternal Order of Police and the Association of Michigan Sheriffs Department. Dale was a former trustee of Portsmouth Township and it's fire department, St. Hyacinth Ushers Club and the Elks Lodge No. 88. He also served with the U.S. Army. Surviving are his wife, Helen; children, Corinne Pillaro and her husband, John, of Grayling, Edward Davis and his friend, Anna, of San Diego, Calif., Kate Young and her husband, Jeff, of Bay City; grandson, Trevor Young; granddaughters, Tianna and Tegan Pillaro; his brother, Patrick Davis and his wife, Joanie, of Cass City; sisters-in-law, Marie Osantoski and her husband, Arthur, Marcella Whitenack and her husband, Grover, Josephine Szymanski and her husband, Richard, Catherine Miller and her husband, Gordon, Virginia Gembarski and her husband, Michael, Linda Reimann and her husband, Walter, Sharon Gisel and her husband, David; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. The funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002, in St. Hyacinth Church. Dale will lie in state in the church Wednesday after 9 a.m. The Rev. Edward J. Long, 95, a resident of Flint died on Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, in Flint. She was born Jan. 2, 1907 in Bad Axe, daughter of Shadrach and Agnes (Sanford) Dean. She married John Long. He preceded her in death in 1965. Surviving are her daughter, Gloria Knapp of Flint; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren. Cremation took place. Burial will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002, at the Colfax Cemetery in Bad Axe. Pastoral Assistant Jan Rapson will officiate. McGeachy Sr., 81, long time educator and Camas, Wash. resident, passed away Sunday, Nov. 3, 2002. Mr. McGeachy was born on June 13, 1920 in Detroit. He was a World War II Navy veteran and a graduate of the University of Idaho. Mr. McGeachy spent the last 22 years in Long Beach, Wash. where he enjoyed golfing, fishing and reading. He is survived by his sisters, Rita Lapworth of Farmington, Lila Contreras of Livonia; brother, Gordon McGeachy of Port Austin; two sons, Irvin McGeachy Jr. of Vancouver, Wash., Bryan McGeachy of Camas, Wash.; a daughter, Linda McGeachy of Vancouver, Wash.; two grandchildren, Scott McGeachy of Camas, Wash., Lisa McGeachy of Bellingham, Wash.; and an extended family of step-grand-children and great-grandchildren. Wednesday, November 6, 2002 Donna Brunet Mrs. Donna (Holeman) Brunet, 69, of Vassar, passed away Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, at her residence. Donna was born on Oct. 2, 1933 in Saginaw and was the daughter of John and Betty (Stone) Holeman. On Jan. 9, 1951, she and Harry Brunet were married at Keesler A. F. B. in Biloxi, Miss. and together they celebrated 51 years of marriage. Following discharge, they moved to Mount Pleasant where Harry finished his teaching degree. In 1956, they moved to the Flint area where Harry began a career in education. They moved to Mancelona in 1969 where her husband was superintendent of schools. Four years later they moved to the Thumb area where her husband was superintendent of the Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port Schools, a position he had until his retirement in 1988. They then moved to Las Vegas following retirement, where they lived until her health prompted a move back to Vassar in 1997. She fought off numerous emphysema attacks along with other illnesses until her death. She was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker her entire married life. She is survived by her husband, Harry; five children, Vicki Faber and her husband, Brad, of Corunna, Michael Brunet and his wife, Jeanie, of Caro, Laurie Slate and her husband, Gary, of Hesperia, Dan Brunet of Brookshire, Texas, Matt Brunet of Katy, Texas; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandson; her mother, Betty Holeman of Saginaw; sister, Sue Piechowiak and her husband, Finis, of Saginaw; brother, Jim Holeman and his wife, Carol, of Weidman; several nieces, nephews, aunts, cousins, and extended family. She was preceded in death by her father, Johnny. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, at the Hanlin Chapel for Funerals of Vassar with Pastor Douglas Stockwell officiating. Visitation will be at 11 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday. Joann Fairchild-Ludington Joann Fairchild-Ludington, 57, of Grosse Pointe Shores died on Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002, at her home. She was the beloved wife of entrepreneur and philanthropist Ivan Ludington, Jr. and mother of Michael Ludington Fairchild, the wind beneath her wings, and sister of Diane Fairchild of GPS and John A. Fairchild Jr. and his wife, Anne, of Grand Rapids. Joann, also known as Jodi had a varied career. She worked for New York Magazine, the debut issue and first year of Ms Magazine with Gloria Stienem and was executive V.P. of PBAA, a national publishing trade association. "The 60's were a great time of joy and thought - the evolution of women had come to the forefront..." speech given by Joann in Fairbanks, Alaska. She turned her career thoughts to broadcasting after nursing her mother in Cleveland. Joann studied and received her FCC License. If you knew Jodi, you would know that when she was told she could never get a job in a top market and never in her choice of music, she did just that: country music WKSW, talk show host and news reporter with WJW and finally morning and afternoon traffic reporter. Jodi moved to Grosse Pointe in 1989 so that Michael could be closer to his father. She always said the 90s were the best. Her work was mostly volunteer. She dedicated the majority of her time to the Grosse Pointe School System. She was President of the Grosse Pointe North Parent's Club, Publisher and editor of the club's newsletter, co-chair of the 1996 All Night Party, and co-chair of Norsemoms. She and her friend Lana Vrabal did take time out to write Dennis Archers newsletter "The Future is Now". She worked directly with Dennis, Freman Hendrix and Neddi Seabrooks. In addition to her husband, son, brother and sister, Joann is survived by niece Alexandria Fairchild; step-sons Dana and his wife, Judy, and their son, Ian Ludington; David and his wife, Karen, and their children David, Erin and Kathy; step-daughter, Susan and her husband, Randal, and their children Emily, Jennifer, and Katie. She was predeceased by step- granddaughter Kimberly Ann in the Spring of 2000. The memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, at Mariner's Church, 170 East Jefferson in Detroit, with the Rev. Richard W. Ingalls officiating. Burial will be in Ludington Cemetery in Harbor Beach. Lucille Swaffield Lucille A. Swaffield, 82, of Bad Axe died Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, at Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe. She was born on Feb. 11, 1920 to the late Andrew and Dora (Grasley) Cole in St. Helen. Lucille married Earl Swaffield on June 20, 1940 at Trinity Episcopal Church in West Branch. He preceded her in death in 1992. Lucille worked as a buyer of children's clothing for Sears in Bay City. She and Earl owned and operated the Huron Party Store in Bad Axe for many years. They retired in 1976. Lucille is survived by her sister, Ruth Long of Lake Clark Shores, Fla.; nieces and nephews, Bob Adrian and his wife, Donna, of Payson, Ariz., Butch Cole and his wife, Sue, of S.C., Barbara Fazekas of Florida, Bud Swaffield and his wife, Delores, of Flint; a grandniece, Denise, of Flint; and a grandnephew, Jim Swaffield of Florida. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Philip, Robert, and Richard Cole; four nieces and two nephews. There will be a memorial service for Lucille and Earl Swaffield at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at Bad Axe First United Methodist Church. The Rev. William Wright will officiate. Thursday, November 7, 2002 Alvin Guild Alvin Charles Guild, 87, of Cass City, died peacefully Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, in his home. He was born April 15, 1915 at home in the Colwood area of Tuscola County to Oscar and Edith (Smith) Guild. He married Mayme (Mary Caroline) Strickland on Oct. 23, 1935 in Toledo, Ohio. She died on July 23, 1988. Alvin farmed until 1947. He drove a gas truck for Gulf (now Cass City Oil and Gas) and was a gasoline station attendant for a few years. He worked for Cass City Manufacturing and he worked 20 years for General Cable. Alvin visited Mio every two weeks since 1966 while Mayme was alive. He enjoyed fly fishing and hunting. He was a member of the Cass City Gun Club. He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Helen; brother, 'Stub' Hall; sister, Alice Gordon; great- granddaughters, Sarah Sutton and Amanda Gere. The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, at Kranz Funeral Home in Cass City with Pastor Phil Whipple and Pastor Rocky Spear of Colwood United Brethren in Christ Church officiating. Interment is in Elkland Township in Cass City. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today, from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, and from 11 to 1 p.m. on Saturday. Memorials may be made to the Family Discretionary Fund. Bernice Haley Bernice C. Haley, 84, long time resident of Bad Axe, died on Sept. 23, 2002 of natural causes at her home in Berkeley, Calif. Bernice was born in Tustin on March 22, 1918 and earned her B.S. degree at Michigan State University before moving to Bad Axe in 1938 to teach home economics at Bad Axe High School. After moving to Bad Axe, she met G. Kirk Haley, whom she married on Christmas Eve 1942 in Hot Springs, Ark. near where Kirk was stationed for basic training in the Army. While Kirk was overseas during World War II, Bernice attended law school at the University of Illinois where she was elected to the Order of the Coif honor society and graduated with highest honors in 1945. She was admitted to the Michigan Bar, and practiced law from 1945 until her retirement in 1986 in partnership with her husband Kirk under the name Haley & Haley. She was the first woman to practice law in Huron County and among the first in the state of Michigan. Bernice was active in a number of charitable causes in the community and as a homemaker for her family. In 1992, after the death of her husband, she moved to California to be close to her sons and grandsons. She is survived by one brother, Donald Cooper of Jensen Beach, Fla.; one sister, Gert Perotti of Brighton; son, George Thomas and his wife, Theresa, of Berkeley, Calif.; daughter-in-law, Sharon Haley of Yosemite, Calif.; two grandsons, Kirk Haley of Davis, Calif. and Brent Haley of Columbus, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her husband; her son James; one brother; one sister. A memorial service will take place at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, at the MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe. Risdon, 49, of Cass City, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, in Hills and Dales General Hospital. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, at Kranz Funeral Home in Cass City with the Rev. Eric Holmgren of Cass City First Baptist Church officiating. Friday, November 8, 2002 Donna Kennedy Donna L. Kennedy, 74, of Ubly passed away Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002, at her residence after a short illness. Donna was born on Aug. 15, 1928 in Zilwaukee to the late Wesley and Eileen (Ditmar) Brown. She married John Kennedy on Dec. 1, 1957 in Angola, Ind. Donna was a graduate of Saginaw Arthur Hill High School. She was a china painter and teacher for 25 years. She participated in many craft shows under the name D & J Crafts. She was a seamstress for Marlette Homes for 7 years. She was a bowler for many years. She has resided in Ubly since 1957. She enjoyed playing bridge, going to casinos and spending time with her grandchildren. Donna is survived by her husband, John "Jack" Kennedy of Ubly; her children, Lana Deo of Ubly, Capt. James Kennedy of Destin, Fla., Cammie Rae Hill of Ubly; four grandchildren, Justin Morrison of Mt. Pleasant, Kyle Kennedy of Panama City, Fla., Tricia Deo of Ubly, Tom Hill of Ubly; one brother-in- law, Harvey Griffore of Indian River. Donna was preceded in death by two sisters, Gloria Collins and Marcie Griffore. A memorial service for Donna Kennedy will be 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly. Mr. Max Gibbs will officiate.
