Miller, 69, of Kinde passed away on Thursday, June 6, 2002, at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon following a long illness. She was born on Sept. 26, 1932, in Port Austin, daughter of the late Norman and Mary (Hoody) Bouverette. She married Edward Miller on Sept. 30, 1950, in St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Dwight, St. Mary Holy Rosary Sodality, the Extension Group and the Bible class. She is survived by her husband, Edward Miller, of Kinde; four sons, Michael Miller and his wife, Barb, of Harbor Beach, David Miller and his wife, Sylvia, of Cass City, Mark Miller and his wife, Donna, of Sebewaing and Christopher Miller and his wife, Melissa, of Gagetown; four daughters, Mary Celestino and her husband, Ricardo, of Newport News, Va., Patricia Guigar and her husband, Elmer, of Bad Axe, Barbara Miller and friend, Brian Kosal, of Bad Axe, Rebecca Gerdeman and her husband, William, of Roy, Utah; one sister, Patricia Gusa and her husband, Andrew, of Minden City; two aunts, Ann Goretski of Hamburg, N.Y. and Clara Hoody of St. Clair Shores; 18 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Veronica Talaski and one granddaughter, Katlin Miller. A mass of Christian burial will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 10, 2002, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Dwight. Officiating will be Fr. Mieczyslaw Oniskiewicz, pastor. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A parish vigil service will be conducted at 7 tonight with a holy rosary sodality service to follow at 7:30 p.m. along with a Daughters of Isabella ceremony at 8:30 p.m. at the Kaufman Funeral Home in Bad Axe. Visitation is from 1 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and 10 a.m. until the time of the service Monday at the church. Pat VanHamme Darleen Pat VanHamme, 79, of Harbor Beach passed away Friday, June 7, 2002, in the Long Term Care Unit of the Harbor Beach Community Hospital following a short illness. Born in Detroit on June 9, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Otto F. and Helena (Schoberlein) Wandrie. She and Joseph VanHamme were united in marriage on Aug. 22, 1969 in Roseville. They were parishioners of Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach and lived in the Harbor House Senior Apartments. Pat was a member of the AmVets Auxiliary in Port Hope. She is survived by her her husband, Joseph VanHamme, of Harbor Beach; her children, Judy Osmulski and her husband, Ronald, of Harbor Beach, Barry VanHamme and his wife, Pamela, of Clarkston, Darla Dickson and her husband, Mark, of Las Vegas, Nev., Nannette Blaska and her husband, Frank, of Warren, Patricia Wright of Detroit and Michael Hojara of Detroit; 19 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren. Pat was preceded in death by a son, Otto Hojara, and a grandson, Craig Osmulski. Cremation has taken place at Sunset Valley Crematory in Bay City. As to Pat's wishes, there will be no services. Conger, 76, of Harbor Beach passed away Friday, June 7, 2002, at Autumnwood of Deckerville following a long illness. Monday, June 10, 2002 Barbara Ignash Barbara J. Ignash, 66, of Port Austin died Monday, May 20, 2002, at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe. She was born on May 22, 1935, in Highland Park, daughter of James and the late Harriette (Soper) Stone. She and Raymond (Pete) Ignash were married on Aug. 2, 1974, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Parisville. He preceded her in death on April 23, 2000. Barbara was a member of the American Legion Frank Horetski Post No. 499 Ladies Auxiliary in Port Austin. She enjoyed shopping and visiting with her friends. She is survived by two sisters, Sally Inglet and her husband, Lonnie, of Modesto, Calif. and Yvonne Abbot of Bellflower, Calif.; one nephew, Rusty Inglet; one niece, Linda Valentin, both of Modesto, Calif.; several cousins and in-laws. She was preceded in death by a half sister, Caroline Beringer. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on June 12, 2002, at the American Legion in Port Austin. Her brother- in-law, Lonnie Inglet, will officiate. Arrangements are being handled by Knoblock Funeral Home in Kinde. Donald Schneider Donald A. Schneider, 68, of Ubly passed away Saturday, June 8, 2002, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Saginaw following a short illness. Don (Pickles) was born Dec. 7, 1933, in Juhl, Mich., son of the late Frederick and M. Viola (Preston) Schneider. He was a 1952 graduate of Sandusky High School and later took law enforcement classes at St. Clair County Community College. He married Marilyn Gray on Oct. 11, 1958, in the Shabbona United Methodist Church. Don was an avid hunter and collector and a member of Ducks Unlimited and Pheasants Forever. He enjoyed family activities, attending flea markets, antique shows and camping. He was a former Ubly Village police officer and worked as a deputy for the Huron County Sheriff's Department. He was a long-time president of the Huron County Fraternal Order of Police. He worked for Bloch & Guggenheimer in Bad Axe from 1965 to 1989, the last few years as plant manager. He served in the United States Army, was an active member and current finance officer of the Thumb Veterans Organization of Ubly, a member of the Port Austin Post of the American Legion, and a member of the Huron County Allied Veterans Council. He was active in community organizations. He was a former Lions Club member and officer, former member of the Community Club, served as treasurer of the Ubly Centennial Committee, was a charter member of the Ubly Historical Society and served on Ubly's planning committee. Don is survived by his wife, Marilyn; children, Danna Mose of Port Huron, Donna Schirmer and her husband, James, of Imlay City and Daniel Schneider and his wife, Laura, of Sterling Heights; grandchildren, Garet and Griffin Schirmer and Caitlin Schneider; one brother, Frederick, of Bay City. The funeral service will be at noon Tuesday at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly. Mr. Mike Gage will officiate. Burial will be at Valley Cemetery with graveside military honors. Memorials may be made to the Thumb Veterans Organization or the family discretionary fund. Lillian Workman Lillian B. Workman, 87, died June 5, 2002, in Napa, Calif. following a long illness. Formerly of Deckerville, Lillian was born on April 20, 1915, to the late John and Bertha (Somerville) Young. She was the wife of the late Aubrey R. Workman. Lillian was a graduate of what is now Eastern Michigan University. She retired in 1976 after teaching for many years in the Deckerville Community Schools. She was a member of the Sanilac County chapter of Retired Michigan School Personnel and Delta Kappa Gamma, educational honorary. She was a longtime member of the Deckerville United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She is survived by two daughters, Catharine M. Hazen and her husband, Bruce, of White Lake and Marjorie Dixon and her husband, Peter E., of Yountville, Calif.; three sisters, Doris Scott and Violet Parrott of Deckerville and Mildred Hamm of Americus, Ga.; four grandchildren, John Hazen and his wife, Denise, Thomas Dixon and his wife, Erin, of California, Susan Raunegger and her husband, Michael, of Austria and Sara Hazen and her husband, John Gibbs, of Michigan; five great-grandchildren, Maxwell and Andreas Raunegger of Austria. Hannah and Harrison Hazen and Georgia Dixon of California; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Bessie Brabant, Evelyn Jones and Selma Young. Tuesday, June 11, 2002 Loretta Nugent Fox Loretta Nugent Fox, 93, of Bad Axe died Sunday evening, June 9, 2002, at Huron County Medical Care Facility. She was born April 19, 1909 in Bingham Township to the late Howard and Alice (Porsche) Nugent. Loretta married Henry Fox in 1941. He preceded her in death in 1968. Loretta retired from Bloomfield Hills School District in 1974 after more than 40 years of teaching. She was a member of St. Eugene Catholic Church in Detroit. Her hobbies included gardening, flowers, and visiting with friends and students from all over the country. She is survived by one bother, William Nugent and his wife, Annette, of Bad Axe; three sisters-in-law, Yvonne Nugent of Grander, Ind., Betty Wringa, Helen Rohiff and her husband, Gleason, of Bad Axe; and 20 nieces and nephews. Loretta was preceded in death by four brothers, Leon Nugent, Percy Nugent, Ralph Nugent and Ronald Nugent; and one sister, Ardis Yageman. Gretz, 80, of Bad Axe passed away on Sunday, June 9, 2002, at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe. He was born on Aug. 21, 1921, in Winber, Pa., son of the late George and Verna (Verb) Gretz. He married Dorothy Leyrer on July 21, 1951, in Pigeon. Mr. Gretz was a milk hauler in Huron County for 30 years. He was a member of the Bad Axe Bowling League for many years and was an avid gardener. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Gretz, of Bad Axe; son, Michael Gretz and his wife, Anna, of Houghton; sister, Anna Papp of Cass City; brother, James Gretz and his wife, Mary Alice, of Decker; two granddaughters, Michele Gretz of Houghton and Lisa Hewiuk of Springfield, Va. Visitation is from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the Kaufman Funeral Home in Bad Axe. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. Anthony Gryka Anthony W. Gryka, 76, of Port Austin died Saturday, June 8, 2002, at the Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe. He was born May 11, 1926 in Detroit, son of the late Anthony and Julie (Kowalski) Gryka. He and Dolores Weber were married in 1974 at Holy Innocents in Roseville. Anthony was a self-employed certified public accountant in Roseville. He became a permanent resident of Port Austin after semi-retiring two years ago. He enjoyed boating, golfing and traveling. He is survived by his wife, Dolores; his son, Dennis and his wife, Pam, of Clinton Township; two daughters, Donna Marie Gryka of Grosse Pointe Woods and Kathleen Gryka of Grosse Pointe Woods; two grandchildren, Julie and Jackie Gryka; three step-children, Cheryl Holzen of Warren, Guy Weber and his wife, Carrie, of Roseville and Shawn Weber of Port Austin; 10 step-grandchildren; and one brother, Ernie Gryka and his wife, Ruth. He was preceded in death by one brother, Kenneth Gryka. Cremation has taken place. There will a memorial service at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 14, 2002, at St. Donald's in Roseville. Arrangements are being handled by the Knoblock Funeral Home in Kinde. Rose Koenig Rose M. Koenig, 89, of Caseville died on Sunday evening, June 9, 2002, at her daughter's home while under hospice care. She was born on July 19, 1912, in Detroit to the late Mietz and Rose Mary (Macholl) Greca. After high school, she became a registered nurse at St. Joseph Hospital in Ann Arbor. She was united in marriage to Paul Koenig on Nov. 2, 1940, in Detroit. After raising four children, she went back to work at Mount Carmel Hospital in Detroit. Her husband, Paul died in July 1973 and she retired in 1974. That same year, she moved to the Oak Beach area where she lived until 1995. She lived at Oakwood Senior Apartments until her health began failing rapidly. Rose was a very active member of St. Roch Catholic Church and Altar Society and a member of the Caseville Retirement Club. She is survived by two sons, Robert Koenig and his wife, Elaine, of Washington and Karl Koenig and his wife, Judy, of Walled Lake; two daughters, Patti Koenig of Pontiac and Mary Musich and her husband, Michael, of Midland; eight grandchildren, Jeff, Kim, Bev, Janine, Curt, Beth, Dave and John; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Richard Greca and his wife, Dorothy, of Carleton; sister, Anne Jaworski and her husband, Erv, of Port Austin. A memorial mass will take place at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 13, 2002, at St. Roch Catholic Church in Caseville. The Rev. Fr. Janis Krug Mrs. Janis Krug, 49, of Bad Axe passed away Saturday, June 8, 2002 at her home from injuries sustained in an accident with a falling tree limb. She was born on March 3, 1953 in Bad Axe to the late Charles R. and Virginia (Sherrow) Wyrick. She married Kenneth Krug on May 7, 1971 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Bad Axe. Janis was a 1971 graduate of Bad Axe High School. They lived in Mount Victory, Ohio for nine years before moving home to Bad Axe in 1978 to work with her husband. She worked at the Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service Office (now the Consolidated Farm Service Agency) for eight years. She was the office manager for Ken Krug & Dgtrs. Trucking. She was a receptionist at the Bad Axe Animal Medical Clinic for two years. She was a member of St. John Catholic Church of Ubly. She enjoyed bowling, antiques, traveling, gardening and visiting with her grandchildren. Janis is survived by her husband, Kenneth, of Bad Axe; three daughters, Jody Hass and her husband, Dan, of Bad Axe, Elizabeth Krug of Phoenix, Ariz., and Colleen Zammit and her husband, Chris, of New York, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Jacob and Diana Hass; her special Spanish daughter, Teresa Berruguete, of Madrid, Spain; three brothers, Thomas Wyrick and his wife, Cerita, of Eldon, Mo., John Wyrick and his wife, Mary, of Ubly, and Forrest "Frosty" Wyrick of Mount Pleasant; her mother-in-law, Martha Krug, of Tennessee; and many brother- and sister-in-laws and nieces and nephews. Lapp, 79, of Cass City died Sunday, June 9, 2002, in St. Mary's Medical Center in Saginaw. He was born on April 18, 1923, in Detroit to Ray T. and Amy (Humes) Lapp. He married June P. Shagene on July 2, 1955, in Argyle. George served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II and was stationed in the Philippine Islands. After returning from the service he worked for Nestles in Cass City, and for a time in Pontiac working construction. George retired in 1985 from General Cable as a foreman after more than 20 years. He was a member of the Masonic Tyler Lodge No. 317 and was to receive his 50-year pin this month. George was a very active life member of the Cass City VFW Post No. 3644 and a life member of the Cass City Gun Club, where he served as president for many years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and bowling. George loved watching sports on television, especially the Detroit Red Wings and the Detroit Tigers. George is survived by his wife, June; children, Robin Horne and her husband, Don, of Cass City, Vicky Lander and her husband, Alton, of Cookeville, Tenn., Barry Lapp of Caro and Tracy Lapp and his wife, Silvia, of Windemere, Fla.; grandsons, Patrick Horne, Kalihib Lander and Levi Lander; brother, Ray Lapp and his wife, Sandy, of Caro; sister, Louella Huntwork of St. Charles. He was preceded in death by a son, Gary Lapp. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 12, 2002, at Kranz Funeral Home in Cass City with Chuck Emmert of Novesta Church of Christ officiating. Memorials may be made to the family discretionary fund. Wednesday, June 12, 2002 Clarence Gremel Clarence H. Gremel, 90, of Sebewaing, died suddenly on Monday, June 10, 2002, at Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe. He was born May 6, 1912, on a farm in Sebewaing, son of the late Edward and Sophia (Taschner) Gremel. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sebewaing and was a lifelong member. He graduated as valedictorian of the Sebewaing High School Class of 1931 and attended Central Michigan University for two years. He served in the United States Infantry for four and a half years during World War II, three and a half years of that were in the European theater of operations. He was in Gen. George S. Patton's Third Army in the Battle of the Bulge. He was discharged in 1945 after earning five battle stars and the bronze star. He was united in marriage to Hannah L. Gallow on April 5, 1953, in Sebewaing. She preceded him in death on Jan. 31, 1998. Clarence was employed as a cashier at the Michigan Sugar Company in Sebewaing for 30 years before retiring in December 1978. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and served on the finance board. He loved his rose garden, weaving rugs and he was an avid bowler. He is survived by two daughters, Susan Gremel of Sebewaing and Lori Gremel of San Francisco; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Norman and Otto Gremel; two sisters, Martha Otto and and Laura Otto; an adopted sister, Rose Estell. The funeral service will take place at 1 p.m. on Thursday, June, 13, 2002, at Immanuel Lutheran Church. The Rev. Charles Kuhl will officiate. Burial will be in Northlawn Cemetery. A military graveside committal service will take place under the auspices of the V.F.W. Post No. 2115 and the Sebewaing American Legion Post No. 293. Visitation is from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing and from noon to the time of the service Thursday at the church. Schott, 74, of Port Austin and formerly of Mayville and Cass City, died Monday, June 10, 2002, at Tuscola County Medical Care Facility. Frank was born on Aug. 5, 1927, to Lambert and Nellie (Fowler) Schott. He married Belva Gardner on Oct. 16, 1947. Frank loved his family, fishing and working in the yard. He managed grain elevators in Mayville, Cass City and Gagetown. He was an Army veteran, a Mayville firefighter and past president of the Mayville Athletic Association. He is survived by two sons, Darwin Schott and his wife, Bonnie, of Scottsdale, Ariz. and Kenneth Schott and his wife, Shari, of Essexville; four grandchildren; two great-grandsons; a brother, Leland "Duke" Schott and his wife, Kate; sister, Maxine Roebuck and her husband, Clark. He was preceded in death by his wife, Belva on Nov. 28, 1994; and his parents. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 14, 2002, at the Juniata Baptist Church with Pastor Dean Bryan officiating, Interment is in the Rich Township Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Juniata Baptist Church or the donor's choice. Bill Wohlford Bill I. Wohlford, 64, of Harbor Beach passed away on June 11, 2002, in the Aleda E. Lutz Veterans Medical Center in Saginaw following a long illness. Born in Harbor Beach on Nov. 15, 1937, he was the son of the late Bert and Mae (Wisenbach) Wohlford. He was a veteran of the Korean conflict, serving in the United States Army. Bill was a retired employee of Hamill Manufacturing in Ubly and enjoyed the out of doors, fishing and hunting. He was a member of the Harbor Beach Gun Club. He is survived by a son, Jack Wohlford and his wife, Vicki, of Sandusky; a daughter, Pamela Coker and her husband, Dennis, of Croswell; two grandchildren, Christopher Gelenski and Crystall Gelenski; three brothers, Charles Wohlford and his wife, Kitty, James Wohlford and his wife, Sandy and Robert Wohlford and his wife, Loraine, all of Harbor Beach; one sister, Pat Siemen and her husband, Harry, of Harbor Beach; two half-sisters, Shirley Adams and her husband, Don, of Flint, and Sharon Howard and her husband, Bill, of Clio; and a friend, Delphine Rutkowski of Harbor Beach. Thursday, June 13, 2002 Lucille Ward Lucille Jean Ward, 92, of Venice, Fla. and Caseville passed away on Nov. 9, 2001, in Ottawa, Ill. A memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 15, 2002, at the First Presbyterian Church in Harbor Beach. The Rev. Theresa Cutler will officiate. Cremation took place and interment was in Rock falls Cemetery in Harbor Beach. Lucille is survived by her daughter, Jean Steinert of Madison, Ind.; a son, Thomas Jean of Roscommon; sister, Gertrude Wells of Nokomis, Fla.; five grandchildren; 10 great- grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Mary June Preistkorn Hollander Wilkerson. Friday, June 14, 2002 Leonard Booms Leonard W. Booms, 83, of Harbor Beach passed away on Thursday, June 13, 2002, at his home under hospice care. Born on Oct. 18, 1918, on the family farm homestead on Eppenbrock Road near Harbor Beach, he was the son of the late John and Elizabeth (Bischer) Booms. Leonard attended the Track School. He and Rita Geiger were married on June 17, 1941. Together they farmed in Sherman Township and raised their 14 children. He worked also for Dott Manufacturing for 29 years, retiring in March 2001. He was a lifelong member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Helena. He enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, doing mechanical repairs and gardening. Leonard is survived by his wife, Rita Booms of Harbor Beach; children, Ronald Booms and his wife, Pauline, of Ruth, Richard Booms and his wife, Connie, of Bad Axe, Sandra Stacer and her husband, Herb, of Rochester Hills, Nancy Vogel and her husband, Frank, of Minden City, Janis Quint and her husband, Don, of Warren, Larry Booms of Shalimar, Fla., Wally Booms and his wife, Carol, of Harbor Beach, Cheryl Cole and her husband, Gene, of Port Huron, John Booms and his wife, Jean, of Kawkawlin, Glen Booms and his wife, Lynda, of Bay City, Wayne Booms and his wife, Margie, of Marysville, Tim Booms and his wife, Paula, of Haslett, Perry Booms and his wife, Jacki, of Taylor, Texas and Terry Booms and his wife, Wendy, of Northville; 38 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Rosaline Messing and Margaret Maurer, both of Harbor Beach; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Jean; five brothers, Roman, Arthur, Wilfred, Leroy, and twin brother, Bernard; five sisters, Clara Roggenbuck, Loretta Dropiewski, Alma Messing, Bernetta Messing and Emma Geiger. A funeral mass will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 15, 2002, in St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Helena with the Rev. Charlie Hammond, pastor officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A parish vigil service will be conducted at 8 p.m. today at the Ramsey Funeral Home in Harbor Beach. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and from 9 a.m. until the time of the service Saturday at the church. Memorials may be given to the St. Anthony's Memorial Fund or to Huron Memorial Hospice. Judy Emling Judy Ann Emling, 63, of Watertown, Wisc., died Monday, June 10, 2002. She was born Nov. 30, 1938 in Ubly, the daughter of the late Arnold and Laura (Stanke) Emling. Judy is survived by three sisters, Charlotte Tyler and her husband, Barney, of Huntington Woods, Marilyn Dowd and her husband, George, of Laguna Woods, Calif., and Dorothy Doering and her husband, William, of Ponca City, Okla.; her guardian, Pat Memdez of Delafield, Wisc.; and many friends at Bethesda Lutheran Home in Watertown, Wisc. There will be a graveside service at 11 a.m. Monday, June 17, 2002, at Colfax Cemetery with the Rev. Kenneth Lueke officiating. Arrangements are being handled by MacAlpine Funeral Home. 1
