Brown, 97, of St. Clair Shores, formerly of Kinde, passed away on Friday, April 12, 2002 in Seneca, Mo., following an extended illness. She was born on Feb. 10, 1905, in Kinde, the daughter of the late Max and Emma (Loss) Geyer. She married William Brown in Detroit. He preceded her in death. She is survived by one grandson, Larry Papp and his wife, Cindy, of Seneca, Mo.; one great grandson, Johnathon Papp of Seneca, Mo.; two sisters, Mabel Riecher and Edna Haldane, both of Bad Axe; one brother, Henry Geyer of Kinde, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a daughter, June Papp; three brothers, William, Russell and Roy Geyer. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 16, 2002 at the Kaufman Funeral Home in Bad Axe. Officiating will be Rev. Kenneth Lueke, pastor of Our Savior Lutheran Church of Bad Axe. Burial will be in the Colfax Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday, and from 10 a.m. until the time of service Tuesday at the Kaufman Funeral Home. Leo Kaliszewski Mr. Leo T. Kaliszewski, 86, of Powers, passed away Thursday, April 11, 2002 in Pinecrest Medical Care Facility of Powers. He was born on June 28, 1915 in Ubly to the late Theodore "Ted" and Felicia (Nowak) Kaliszewski. He married Eleanor LaBuhn on Nov. 21, 1936 at Holy Name Catholic Church of Detroit. She preceded him in death on Sept. 21, 1964 in Marquette. Leo was a graduate of the Sparling Country School. He farmed in the Ubly area until 1948 when he worked road construction in Huron County. He owned Leo's Bar in Lewisville from 1950 to 1955. He then moved to the Upper Peninsula and owned Seney Tavern from 1959-1967. He worked as a millwright for Munising Forest Products for years before starting the Tri-County Sanitary Works. He was a former parishioner of St. John Catholic Church of Ubly. He had lived in Christmas, and recently lived with his son in Rapid River and Powers. Leo is survived by one son; Arthur Kaliszewski and his wife, Patricia, of Rapid River; one daughter, Carol Santille of Chesterfield Township; 12 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; one sister, Helen Hughes of Florida; two brothers, Chris Kaliszewski and his wife, Ruth, of Ubly; Mark Kaliszewski of Port Austin. He was preceded in death by one daughter: Joann Modad; one son, Leo Jr.; one sister, Marie "Mamie" Smielewski. Funeral mass for Leo Kaliszewski will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, April 15, 2002 at St. John Catholic Church of Ubly. Rev. Kevin Maksym, associate pastor, will officiate. Harold Klaus Harold Leon Klaus, 86, of Midland, and former lifetime resident of the Forestville area, went hone to the Lord on Saturday, April 13, 2002. He was born in Minden City on July 4, 1915, youngest of 13 children. Harold graduated from Deckerville High School, and on March 10, 1951, he married the former Ruth Fagan at Trinity Lutheran Church, Forestville. He was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church and a lifelong farmer in the Forestville area. He moved to Midland in 2001. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Ruth; six children, Susan Hoffman and her husband, Henry, of Petoskey, Sally Allen of Fort Wayne, Ind., Lee Klaus and his wife, Joyce, of Roanoke, Ind., Linda Frasier and her husband, Richard, of Port Huron, Jackie Maxwell of Midland, and Timothy Klaus and his wife, Trenie, of Bay City; grandchildren, Kyle and Tim Hoffman; Matthew Klaus and his wife, Jessica; Stacey Kuster and her husband, Brent; Scott Klaus; Trevor and Brendon Allen; Chad Frasier, and Austin Maxwell; sister, Helen McGillis; sister-in- law, Winnie Klaus, both of Frankenmuth; and many special nieces and nephews. Harold was proceeded in death by his parents, Charles and Anna (Lietke) Klaus; 11 brothers and sisters. Local arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Directors, Midland. Philip Wiederhold Phil G. Wiederhold, 88, long-time Elkton businessman, died Friday morning, April 12, 2002 at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon after suffering a massive heart attack at home. He was born June 1, 1913 in Elkton at the home of his parents, the late Mose and Lucille (Laclair) Wiederhold. In 1933, Phil bought his first truck, a 1930 Model A Ford and hauled sand to the new school being built in Ubly. He and brother Ed started Wiederhold Brothers Trucking Co. in 1937 and changed the name to Wiederhold Freight Lines in 1942 when they got their MPSC license. At one time they had 50 truck/ trailer rigs on the road, hauling anything from grain and gravel to lumber, and even Pepsi. Also in March of 1942, he and Annabelle Grigg were married. She preceded him in death Dec. 30, 1995. Phil and Annabelle raised 10 children, and from 1963 to 1973, would pack them all up for a trip to Florida. In the early 1970s, Phil sold his interest in the trucking business to his nephew, Larry. He purchased property at the west limits of Elkton and built a new business, Wiederhold Repair Service. In 1986, he sold the business to two of his sons and 'kind of' retired. He continued working at the shop, selling used cars and running parts. His little yellow car will be missed traveling the west side of the county. Surviving are four sons, Gordon of St. Louis; Ed and his wife, Mary; John and his wife, Becky; and Doug and his wife, Michelle, all of Elkton; five daughters, Alice Birchfield and her husband, Vernon, of Leander, Texas; Donna Sherwood of Bad Axe, Connie Wiederhold; Laura Prill, and her husband Bill; and Rose Karastes and her husband, Dennis, all of Elkton; 32 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lilly Jackson; two grandchildren, Jim Wiederhold and Ashley Prill; his brother and sister, Edward and Lillian Wiederhold. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 16, 2002 at the Community Wesleyan Church, which he helped build and was a member. Rev. Weiss, 62, prominent Port Hope area farmer, passed away Saturday morning, April 13, 2002 at his home following an apparent heart attack. Born in Harbor Beach on May 18, 1939, he was the son of the late Fred and Mabel (Maschke) Weiss. Les and Mary Goniwicha were united in marriage on Feb. 27, 1960 in Port Hope. Together they farmed with their family near Port Hope for more than 42 years. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Port Hope and he enjoyed playing cards, especially euchre and visiting with friends. He enjoyed selling fertilizer and seed and investing in real estate. Leslie is survived by his wife, Mary Weiss of Port Hope; his son, Leslie Weiss Jr., and his wife, Linda, of Port Hope; a daughter, Susan Dobson, and her husband, Scott, of Waterford; two grandchildren, Steven and Jennifer Weiss; two brothers, William Weiss and his wife Jean, of Boyne Falls; and Larry Weiss and his wife Diana, of Columbia City, Indiana. He was preceded in death by a son, Richard James Weiss, and a sister, Wilma Jean Weiss. Tuesday April 16, 2002 Agnes Clor Agnes C. Clor, 78, of Harbor Beach passed away Monday, April 15, 2002, in St. Mary's Medical Center following a brief illness. She was born on Sept. 29, 1923, in Ruth to the late Edward and Anna (McCleod) Heilig. Agnes and Thomas Clor were married on Aug. 16, 1941, in Ruth. Thomas preceded her in death on March 20, 1994. She was a member of Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach. She loved to play cards, work in her flower garden, work on her lawn, and was always willing to help others in their times of need. Agnes is survived by her children, Carol Sawdon and her husband, Bruce, of Algonac, Thomas L. Clor and his wife, Helen, of Minden City, Jean Lemanski and her husband, Dennis, of Dearborn, Robert Clor and his wife, Gaile, of Rochester Hills, Gordon Clor and his wife, Karen, of Port Huron and Marcus Clor and his wife, Terri, of Sterling Heights; 19 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Clarence Heilig of Port Huron, Eugene Heilig and his wife, Josephine, of Port Austin and Gerald Heilig of Ubly; and a sister, Marie Clor of Port Huron. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Eddie and Tony Heilig; and a grandson, Timothy Sawdon. Durrell Jacobs Durrell Lee Jacobs, 44, of Pigeon passed away unexpectedly on Monday, April 15, 2002, at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon. He was born at the old Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon on Nov. 29, 1957, son of Dwight M. and Doris J. (Robarts) Jacobs. Following his graduation in 1976 from Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port High School, he attended Central Michigan University. On May 8, 1982, he was united in marriage to Donna J. Ropp at the Pigeon River Mennonite Church south of Pigeon. She survives him. Durrell farmed the Jacobs family farm with his brothers and was a commercial electrician. He liked puzzles and enjoyed sports. In addition to his wife, Donna, he is survived by two children, Aaron and Jennifer, both at home; a sister, Deanne Schlusler and her husband, Michael, of Lapeer; two brothers, Dennis Jacobs of Saginaw and Durwin Jacobs and his wife, Pat, of Pigeon; his mother, Doris J. Jacobs of Pigeon; his in-laws, Duane and Elaine Ropp of Pigeon; and several cousins, nieces, nephews and in-laws. He was preceded in death by his father, Dwight; and his grandparents, George and Grace Robarts and Julius and Nora Jacobs. Lasceski, 58, of Farmington Hills died Saturday, April 13, 2002, at St. John's Health System in Mount Clemens. He was born on June 2, 1943, in Kinde, son of the late John and Anna Lasceski. He and Barbara Knoblock were married in November 1965 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin. She preceded him in death on June 6, 1999. He is survived by his son, Dale Lasceski of Northville; two brothers, Bernard Lasceski and his wife, Florence, and Jerry Lasceski and his wife, Suzanne; and two sisters, Bernice Osentoski and her husband, Mark, and Grace Goretski and her husband, Ernie. Local arrangements are being handled by the Knoblock Funeral Home in Kinde. Sara Loining Sara V. Loining, 83, of Caseville passed away Monday, April 15, 2002, at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe. She was born on June 27, 1918, in Duluth, Minn., daughter of the late Carl and Mary (Erickson) Soderstedt. On Sept. 14, 1940, she was united in marriage to William Loining in Duluth. He preceded her in death on March 21, 1999. Mrs. Loining was a homemaker throughout her lifetime and moved to Huron County 14 years ago. She enjoyed music and playing the organ. She was a member of the Caseville Retirement Club. Mrs. Loining is survived by a daughter, Connie Power and her husband, Michael, of Caseville; a son, Robert Loining and his wife, Sherry, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two granddaughters, Terri Wiechert and her husband, Jeff, and Jodi Smith and her husband, Todd; three great-grandchildren, Aaron and Allison Smith and Matthew Wiechert; two sisters, Lois McNally of Summer, Wash., and Janet Berntsen and her husband, Erling, of Duluth, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews. Larry Szeszycki Larry Szeszycki, 54, of Warren died Sunday, April 14, 2002, at St. John's Health System in Madison Heights. He was born on Dec. 9, 1947, in Hamtramck, son of Emilie (Krajenka) Szeszycki and the late Clarence Szeszycki. He was a member of St. Louise Catholic Church in Warren. Larry also belonged to the American Legion Frank Horetski Post 499 and served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam. He is survived by his mother, Emilie; one sister, Jacqueline Tauber of Birmingham; two nephews, Jay and Aaron Tauber, both of Florida; and two aunts, Irene Tschirhart of Sterling Heights and Helen Lemanski of Madison Heights. Schornack, 85, of Harbor Beach, Michigan, passed away Sunday, April 14, 2002 at Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe, Michigan following a short illness. She was born December 19, 1916 in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of the late Albert and Mary (Essenmacher) Mausolf. Gertrude and Stanley Schornack were united in marriage on November 25, 1935 in Harbor Beach. He preceded her in death on November 23, 1994. She was a member of Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church at S. First Street, Harbor Beach, secretary for the Harbor Beach Senior Citizens Club, a member of the Port Hope Senior Citizens and a member of the Daughters of Isabella of Bad Axe. She loved quilting, playing cards, and reading. She was survived by four daughters and two sons: Donna Conforti and her husband, Phillip, of Warren Michigan, Barbara Decker and her husband, Gary, of San Diego, California, Julie Maschke and her husband, Gary, of Yorktown, Virginia, Linda Peoples, and her husband Ray, of Westerville, Ohio, James Schornack and his wife, Sharon, of Fillion, Michigan, and Ron Schornack and his wife, Lori, of Ruth, Michigan; 12 grandchildren; two great grandchildren. Visitation is scheduled for Monday, April 15, 2002, from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Ramsey Funeral Home, Inc., and on Tuesday from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m., and on Wednesday at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Wednesday, April 17, 2002 Joseph Pelant Joseph B. Pelant, 79, of Lake Township near Caseville, died Monday evening April 15, 2002, at Hills & Dales General Hospital in Cass City. He was born Dec. 2, 1922, at the home of his parents, the late Joseph and Frances (Pucek) Pelant in Caseville. Joseph attended Rock City Country School and Caseville High School. He was a dairy farmer and lived all his life on the family farm. In the 1950s, Joe was actively involved in the planning of, cutting of timber and construction of the Calvary Baptist Church in Caseville where he was a charter member. In past years, he taught Sunday school and greatly enjoyed singing the hymns of the church. All his life, Joe had a keen interest and knowledge of the outdoors and conservation. From boyhood, he loved trapping, fishing and hunting. He made much of his own equipment. Almost to his passing, Joseph continued to have an excellent knowledge of lakes, rivers and wildlife across northern Michigan and even throughout Canada. He is survived by his sister, Mary Depner and her husband, John, of Caseville; several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were two brothers, Edward and an infant, Jerry. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 19, 2002, at the Calvary Baptist Church in Caseville. The Rev. Michael Goforth, pastor will officiate with burial in the Caseville Township Cemetery. Helen Williams Helen Mary "Busia" Williams, 81, of Portsmouth, Va. died Sunday, April 14, 2002, at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth. She was born on Oct. 28, 1920, in Detroit and was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph L. Williams. She was a member of the Church of the Resurrection in Portsmouth for 30 years. She retired from civil service at the Sewells Point Branch Clinic in Norfolk, Va. She worked on numerous election boards, at the Taylor Road fire station and performed volunteer work at the Oasis Social Ministry and for the Welcome Wagon. She is survived by two sons, John Williams of Brighton and Mike Williams of Sault Ste. Marie; three daughters, Mary Cox, Connie Sample and Kathy Hare, all of Chesapeake, Va.; 10 grandchildren; a sister, Genevieve Jazek of Port Austin, an aunt, Gertrude Partika of Port Austin. She will be remembered for her love of God, family and friends and the acts of love and kindness she showed others. To her grandchildren, she was known as "Busia," which is grandmother in Polish. Beyer, 79, of Swartz Creek died Thursday morning, April 18, 2002, at Durand Convalescent Center. She was born Nov. 2, 1922, in Fairhaven Township, daughter of the late Edward and Leah (Braun) Kuhl. She is survived by two sons and two daughters, Alan Lloyd, Carole Gould and her husband, Dennis, all of Swartz Creek, Kathy Miller and her husband, Jim, of Fenton and Gary Lloyd and his wife, Janie, of Flint; seven grandchildren, Alan Lloyd, Brian Prescott, Lori Kerns, David Hewitt, Kris Reyes, Natasha Lloyd and Bruce Lloyd; 13 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Alberta Cagle of Taylor, Doris Quick of Bay Port and Sylvia Wheeling and her husband, Douglas, of Rochester; two brothers, Lloyd Kuhl and his wife, Belva, and Willard Kuhl and his wife, Lorraine, all of Sebewaing; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; one grandson, Ray E. Prescott; and four brothers, Bernhardt, Harry, Roland and Bruce Kuhl. Nellie Flanery Nellie May Flanery, 88, of Bad Axe and former resident of Port Crescent and Detroit, died Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at Sunny Acres Nursing Center in Bad Axe. She was born on Dec. 22, 1913, in Port Crescent to the late Julius and Stella (Ordee) Schlidgemilch. She married John A. McCarren in 1930. He preceded her in death in 1949. She then married Raymond Flanery on December 1965 in Grand Rapids. He preceded her in death on Aug. 20, 1998. She is survived by three daughters, Annabel Fatalski and her husband, Richard, of Westland, Delores Olson of Evert and Grace Baker and her husband, Bill, of Bad Axe; five sons, Patrick McCarren and his wife, Judy, of Traverse City, David McCarren of Arizona, Robert McCarren and his wife, Carol, of Lincoln Park, Joe McCarren and his wife, Louise, of Allen Park, and James McCarren of Dearborn; two sisters, Elenor Kologek of Bad Axe and Helen Woolworth of Dearborn Heights; 16 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Nellie was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Suzane; a son, John McCarren, Jr.; a grandson, Charles McCarren; a son-in-law, Ervin Olson; and a brother, Richard O'Connors. Forster, 62, of Elkton died Wednesday morning, April 17, 2002, at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon of Lou Gehrig's disease. She was born Dec. 12, 1939, in Kokomo, Ind., daughter of the late Stanley and Pauline (Creason) Keel. Phyllis' family moved to Cass City when she was 4 years old. She attended school there and was a 1957 graduate. On June 7, 1958, she was united in marriage to Gerald (Hap) Forster at the Trinity Lutheran Parsonage in Elkton. For 20 years, Phyllis took care of the community board in Elkton, stepping down for health reasons. She kept track of local birthdays, anniversaries and other local events. In 2001, the Elkton Lions Club presented her with the "Citizen of the Year" award for her involvement in the community. Phyllis was a lifelong member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Elkton. She enjoyed word-find puzzles and reading. Surviving are her husband, Gerald (Hap); five children, David Forster and his wife, Sue, of Decker, Paul Forster and his wife, Michelle, of Warren, Jeff Forster and his wife, Sonya, of Lexington, S.C., Jayne Forster and her husband, Scott Parks, of Elkton, and Troy Forster and his wife, Tara, of Lexington, S.C.; a sister, Cheryl Moore and her husband, Jerry, of Monicello, Ind.; and 14 grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, April 22, 2002, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Elkton. The Rev. Eldon Bickel, pastor, will officiate with burial in Riverside Cemetery in Elkton. Floyd Taylor Floyd "Bugs" Robert Taylor, 80, of Sebewaing died Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at home following a one-month illness. He was born Aug. 22, 1921, in St. Charles, son of the late Floyd E. and Mildred (Clark) Taylor. He married Betty Jane Kothe on June 20, 1941, in Vassar. Floyd was employed at Michigan Milk Producers Dairy in Sebewaing for 35 years before retiring in 1984. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Phillipines during World War II. They resided in Sebewaing until moving to Caseville 12 years ago. He was a life member of the former Wallace Lodge No. 434 F&AM, later the Northern Star Lodge No. 277 of Sebewaing and the Hubbard-Winsor Lodge No. 420 of Pigeon. He served as Worshipful Master of all three lodges; High Priest of the Caro Chapter R.A.M.; Lebanon Chapter No. 125 Royal Arch of Bad Axe; Eminent Commander, Bad Axe Commandery No. 52; thrice Illustrious Master, Cass City Council No. 90 R&SM; Scottish Rite Valley of Bay City; life member of the Sebewaing Chapter No. 407 O.E.S. and Elkton Chapter No. 431 O.E.S.; and was Worthy Patron 22 times; committeeman on Masonic Relations of Upston Whittman Grand Family; second vice president of Thumb Association of O.E.S. and Huron County O.E.S.; member of Upston Whittman Gentle Shepherd Club; Strawberry Yacht Club of Webber Labis Family; Port Austin Community Players; the Port Austin U&I Club; Past Patron of Michigan Mallette Club; life member of the Sebewaing VFW Post No. 4115; had been one of the originators of the Sebewaing Little League Program and had coached for 15 years; and he was an avid motorcyclist and outdoorsman. Surviving are his wife, Bette, of Caseville; three sons, Tyrone Taylor and his wife, Sandra, Robert Taylor and his wife, Amy, all of Sebewaing, and Todd Taylor and his wife, Bregetta, of Pigeon; 15 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one sister, Genevieve Zimmerman of Vassar; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Eldon Taylor. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 20, 2002, at the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing. The Rev. Alan DeGraw of Hayes United Methodist Church will officiate with burial in Silverlawn Cemetery. A military graveside committal service will take place under the auspices of the Sebewaing VFW Post No. 4115. The Hubbard-Winsor Lodge No. 420 F&AM will conduct a memorial service at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Friday, April 19, 2002 Cecelia Johnston Cecelia Sylvia Johnston, 85, died Sunday, April 14, 2002, at McLaren Homewood Village. Mrs. Johnston was born April 12, 1917, in Huron County, daughter of Joseph and Agnes Peyok. She married Norman Johnston in January 1940 and they lived on a farm in Ubly before moving to Flint. She was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church and a member of the Altar Society. Sylvia belonged to three bowling leagues and enjoyed gardening, sewing and traveling. She worked as a housekeeper in doctors' offices. Surviving are her daughter, Jennifer Vollweiler; a sister, Ann Stee and her husband, John, of Warren; a brother, Sal Peyok of Kinde; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. A funeral mass will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, April 19, 2002, at St. Agnes Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Gracelawn Cemetery. 1
