Hartz, 58, of Port Hope passed away Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002 at Huron Medical Center, Bad Axe, following an apparent heart attack. Born in Port Hope on Sept. 30, 1943, he was the son of Emma (Pleiness) Hartz and the late Ernest Hartz. Daniel and Janet Mellendorf were united in marriage in St. John Lutheran Church in Port Hope on Feb. 3, 1968. He was an employee of Evenheat Kiln Co. of Caseville for the past 30 years. Deniel was a member of St. John Lutheran Church of Port Hope. He is survived by his wife, Janet Hartz, of Port Hope; his sons, Brent Hartz and his wife, Julie, of Chesterfield Township, Bradley Hartz and his, Sally, of Colorado Springs, Co., Barry Hartz and his wife, Rebecca, of Macomb; two grandchildren, Madison and Brendan Hartz; his mother, Emma Hartz, of Bad Axe; a sister, Donna Wolschlager and her husband, Al, of Bad Axe; three brothers, Melvin Hartz and his wife, Beverly, of Port Hope, Gerald Hartz and his wife, Marsha, of Pigeon and Clifford Hartz of Port Hope. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002 at St. John Lutheran Church in Port Hope with burial in the Lakeview Cemetery with the Rev. Gregory Eilers, pastor, officiating. A scripture service will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Monday in the Ramsey Funeral Home of Harbor Beach. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 1 to 9 p.m. Monday in the funeral home, and from noon until the time of service Tuesday at the church. Monday, September 16, 2002 Doreen Hagedon Doreen M. Hagedon, 68, of Harbor Beach passed away on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002, at Mercy Hospital in Port Huron following a brief illness. She was born on Nov. 5, 1933, in Harbor Beach, the daughter of the late William and Anna (Geiger) Siemen. On Nov. 5, 1949, Doreen was united in marriage to Jack Hagedon in Harbor Beach. He preceded her in death on May 8, 1988. Doreen was a parishioner of Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach and enjoyed going on casino trips. She is survived by her children, Perry Hagedon of Fairgrove, John Hagedon of Redford, Kathy Burkhard and her husband, Greg, of North Street, David Hagedon of Harbor Beach, Mary Peyerk and her husband, Joe, of Riley and Bradley Hagedon of Harbor Beach; 11 grandchildren; two brothers, Lavern Siemen of Harbor Beach and Clem Siemen and his wife, Marjorie, of Harbor Beach. Doreen was preceded in death by three sons, Tom, Randy and Rodney Hagedon; three brothers, Allen, Marcus and Ray Siemen; three sisters, Mildred Siemen, Lillian Essenmacher and Alma Woycehoski. A funeral mass will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002, in Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church with the Rev. John Weiss, pastor at St. Joseph's Church in Rapson, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A parish vigil service will be at 7:30 p.m. in the Ramsey Funeral Home in Harbor Beach. Visitation is from 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Wednesday at the church. Bonnie Pettit Bonnie L. Pettit, 38, of Kinde, died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002, at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon following a courageous battle with cancer. She was born on May 22, 1964, daughter of the late Lee and Ruth (Proudfoot) Chappel. Bonnie was employed at Scheurer Hospital. She was an avid racing fan and loved to spend time with her family and friends. She is survived by her husband, Ray, of Kinde; son, Jami; daughter, Brooke, both at home; stepdaughter, Shannon of Pontiac; sister, Cindy Farver and her husband, Brion, of Elkton; brother, Jim Chappel and his wife, Sue, of Kinde; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ellen and Suzie. A funeral mass will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002, at the United Methodist Church of Pinnebog. The Rev. David Freeland, pastor, and the Rev. Robert Garrett will officiate. Burial will follow in Colfax Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at Knoblock Funeral Home in Kinde and from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Wednesday at the church. Tuesday, September 17, 2002 Stella Schlaud Stella P. Schlaud, 87, of Marlette died on Monday, Sept. 16, 2002, at Marlette Community Hospital. She was born on July 21, 1915, in North Branch, daughter of the late August and Sara (Tallieu) Young. She moved to Marlette from North Branch in 1958. Stella married Peter B. Schlaud on June 2, 1937, in North Branch. He preceded her in death on Feb. 19, 1999. She was an active member of the St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Marlette serving as president of the Women's Council. She was involved in Project Blessing and she was active in the Marlette Community Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing bingo, also. She is survived by three sons, Peter B. Schlaud Jr. of Marlette, Ronald Schlaud and his wife, Carol, of Brown City and Charles Schlaud and his wife, Sandy, of Marlette; daughter, Rita Guigar and her husband, John, of Bad Axe; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one foster granddaughter. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002, at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Marlette. The Rev. Fr. Richard Bokinskie will be officiating. Burial will be in Ss. Peter and Paul Cemetery in North Branch. A parish wake service will be conducted at 6 p.m. at Marsh Funeral Chapel in Marlette. Wednesday, September 18, 2002 Harold Abke Harold G. Abke, 85, of Unionville died on Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002, at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe. He was born on Jan. 1, 1917, in Unionville. On March 29, 1941, he married Madeline Ziegler at the Methodist Parsonage outside Unionville. She preceded him in death on May 19, 1997. Harold was a farmer throughout his life, starting at a young age after the death of his father. He was a life member and past master of the Hubbard- Winsor Lodge No. 420 F&AM, Kedron Chapter No. 33 O.E.S. and the Bay City Elks Club. Harold served on the Unionville Village Council and was chairman of the Tuscola County ASCS board. Harold loved his winters in Lakeland, Fla. He is survived by one son, Lynn Abke and his wife, Kathie, of Bad Axe; two grandchildren, Andrea Abke of Mount Pleasant and Lance Abke of Hazel Park; one brother, Dale Abke of Lapeer; one sister-in-law, Maxine Profit of Cass City; three nephews; one niece; several cousins. He was preceded in death by one sister, Lucille La Fave. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, 2002, at the Collon Funeral Home in Caro. The Rev. William R. Wright of First United Methodist Church in Bad Axe will officiate with burial in Indianfields Township Cemetery. There will be a Masonic memorial service at 7:30 p.m. Thursday under the auspices of the Hubbard-Winsor Lodge No. 420 F&AM. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today, 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday, and 1 p.m. until the time of the service Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Bad Axe or the American Cancer Society. Katherine Gulash Katherine M. Gulash, 77, of Swartz Creek died Monday, Sept. 16, 2002, at McLaren Regional Medical Center in Flint. Mrs. Gulash was born April 29, 1925, in Iron Mountain, the daughter of Donald and Margaret (Kelly) Nelson. She resided in Swartz Creek since 1948. She married George Vincent Gulash. He preceded her in death in 1973. She was a graduate of Kingsford High School. She received her bachelor of science degree from Northern Michigan University, and her master's degree from Michigan State University. She retired from Swartz Creek Community Schools as a business instructor. Mrs. Gulash was a member of St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church and the M.E.A. She is survived by two children, Mary Katherine Nichols and her husband, Jack, of Conifer, Colo., and Robert Gulash and his wife, Janet, of Caseville; two grandchildren, Nathan, at Michigan State University, and Erin, at Central Michigan University; her brothers, Judge Allen Nelson and his wife, Mary, of Flushing, Irving Nelson and his wife, Jane, of Davison, Merlin Nelson and his wife, Shirley, of Iron Mountain, Donald Nelson and his wife, Donna, of Oakland County, sisters, Alice Brown of Wisconsin, Carol Trauter and her husband, Leo, of Wisconsin, Mavis Powell and her husband, David, of Midland, Pat Wolf and her husband, Dien, of Detroit, and Norma Scolatti of Iowa; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George; two sons, George, in 1969, and John, in 1971; and a grandson, Brian, in 1987. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 20, 2002, at St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Swartz Creek. The Rev. Fr. Amos Wischmeyer will officiate. Polowski, 86, of Port Austin died Monday, Sept. 16, 2002, at Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe. He was born on Oct. 31, 1915, in Port Austin, son of the late Joseph and Catherine (Goretski) Polowski. He married Virginia Zimmerman on Oct. 10, 1941, in Trenton. She preceded him in death on Oct. 3, 1985. Stanley lived in Port Austin since 1945. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, the American Legion Frank Horetski Post No. 499, and St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin where he participated as a council member. He served in the United States Army during World War II as a chief warrant officer, becoming one of the first radar technicians. During his life, Stanley engaged in a variety of occupations. Prior to World War II, he worked in the excavating and home moving business. He owned a garage/car dealership in Port Austin from 1946 to 1950. In the 1950s, he was employed as a television and radio repairman. He operated Eagle Bay Market from 1957 to 1961, and worked as a mailman for 23 years. He is survived by his son, Joseph Polowski and his wife, Elaine, of Washington; his daughter, Patricia Dailey of Nashville, Tenn.; a grandson, Joseph Michael Polowski of Portland, Ore.; several step- grandchildren; many step-great-grandchildren; a brother, Alan Polowski, of Cornville, Ariz. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles, Robert, and Paul Polowski; and four sisters, Eleanor Stinson, Irene Butterwick, Freda Gorney, and Bernice Polowski. Funeral Mass will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, 2002, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin. Fr. Robert Pare', pastor will officiate. Thursday, September 19, 2002 Emily Pasternak Emily E. Pasternak, 89, of Caseville passed away Wednesday Sept. 18, 2002, at her home. She was born in Detroit on Jan. 19 1913, the daughter of the late Anthony and Anna (Rudnicki) Sniecikowski. On May 8, 1937, she was united in marriage to Joseph J. Pasternak in Detroit. He preceded her in death on Nov. 6, 1983. Mrs. Pasternak worked in Detroit for Parke Davis Pharmaceuticals for 10 years, until her retirement in 1960. She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 3690 Auxiliary in Caseville. She is survived by a son, Joseph Pasternak and his wife, Ginger, of Pigeon; five grandchildren, Glenn and April Pasternak of Armada, Valerie and Mark Brackevelt of Berkley, Lorraine Zorvan of Andersonville, Tenn., Craig and Holly Olsen of Bakersfield, Calif., and Tom and Christine Fibranz of Macomb; nine great-grandchildren a sister, Blanche Supanich of St. Clair Shores; a brother, Ray Sniecikowski and his wife, Rita, of Sand Point; a sister- in-law, Mary Sniecikowski of Eastpointe; several nieces and nephews; a special friend, Henry Jaskula. She was preceded in death by two brothers Ed and Phil Sniecikowski; and a sister Mary Augustniak. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, 2002, at the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home of Pigeon with Sr. Theresa Fox, O.P. officiating. Burial will be in the St. Roch Catholic Cemetery in Caseville. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donors choice. Friday, September 20, 2002 Gregg Ropp Gregg L. Ropp, 36, of Nampa, Idaho, passed away Sept. 5, 2002, following a seven month illness. He was born on May 11, 1966, in Pigeon to Harold and Mildred (Shepherd) Ropp. Gregg was 1984 graduate of Elkton Pigeon Bay Port High School after which he joined the U.S. Air Force, serving his country for nine years. On Oct. 16, 1987, he was united in marriage to Janine Van Nuz in the Netherlands. After the USAF, he attended Boise State University, receiving an applied science degree in drafting technology. In 1999, he took a job as an engineer at CH2Mhill in Boise, designing interstate highways. Gregg loved athletic and outdoor activities since childhood. He played basketball, tennis and softball during and after high school. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, also. He took up skiing, golf and softball in adulthood. He loved sharing these pastimes with his family and friends. The most important thing throughout these wanderings of his was that he found Christ as his Lord and Savior and made it a priority to develop close relationships with his wife, children and friends. He is survived by his wife, Janine; daughter, Milissa; two sons, Daniel and Joshua, all of Nampa; parents, Harrold and Mildred Ropp of Pigeon; two brothers, Troy of Harrison Township and James of Spring Lake, N.C.; nephew, Keagan of Bay City; special cousin, Ronald Shepherd of Warren. A funeral service took place on Sept. 10, 2002, in Boise, Idaho, with burial in Dry Creek Cemetery in Boise. Memorial services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at the First United Methodist Church in Pigeon with pastor Margaret Passenger officiating.
