Local obituaries for the week beginning May 19, 2002 Sunday, May 19, 2002 Garry Copeland Garry Keith Copeland, 57, of Houston, Texas died Friday, May 17, 2002, at St. John Macomb Hospital in Warren. He was born on Nov. 7, 1944, in Bad Axe, the son of Delbert and the late Lorraine (Benttley) Copeland. Garry was raised in Harbor Beach and Verona. He was a graduate of Harbor Beach High School Class of 1962. He moved to Texas in 1976. He enjoyed fishing, boating, playing darts and visiting with family and friends. He is survived by his father, Delbert Copeland, of Kinde; two sons, Michael Copeland of Bad Axe and Daniel Copeland of Harbor Beach; four daughters, Tammy Runyon and her husband, Harold, of Warren, Kelli Sanders and her husband, Anthony, of Warren, Candi Wright and her husband, Thomas, of Houston, Texas, and Kimberly Copeland of Dallas, Texas; one sister, Julie Goodwin and her husband, Craig, of Atlanta, Ga.; 17 grandchildren. Visitation is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe. Funeral services and burial will take place in Houston. Lucile DeLong Lucile M. DeLong, 76, of Cass City took her final journey homeward bound on Friday, May 17, 2002. She died in her home with her family by her side. She was born Aug. 24, 1925, in Gagetown to Howard and Cecil (McConkey) Loomis. She married Donald DeLong on Oct. 5, 1946, in Gagetown. He died on Jan. 7, 1985. Lucile attended Bay City School of Nursing after her graduation from high school. She worked for Dr. June McRae for many years, helping to deliver many babies. She worked for the Cass City Public Schools as a bus driver for 28 years, Lucile drove the Amish school bus for many years, also. She was an active member of the Novesta Church of Christ, the O.E.S. and 4-H. She served on the Novesta Township Board and was a charter member of the Thumb Draft Horse Association. Lucile is survived by her children: Francis DeLong and his wife, Sharon, of Cass City, Duane DeLong and his wife, Denise, of Kingston, Connie Benitez and her husband, Manuel, of Cass City, Richard DeLong of Cass City, Robert DeLong and his wife, Kathy, of Cass City, Donna Lenhard and Dr. Larry Seale of Cass City; 15 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren with the 11th due soon; sisters, Dorothy Murray and her husband, A.J., of Williamston, Shirley Kritzman and her husband, Irving "Bud" of Millersburg, Ind.; brothers, Donald Loomis and his wife, Anita, of Cass City and David Loomis and his wife, Joyce, of Cass City; many nieces and nephews, friends and neighbors. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Paul Robert DeLong on Sept. 30, 2000. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, May, 20, 2002, at Novesta Church of Christ in Cass City with Chuck Emmert officiating. Interment is in Novesta Township Cemetery. Visitation is from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Kranz Funeral Home in Cass City and from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church. Pall bearers for Mrs. DeLong will be her grandchildren. "Molly" Soule, 87, of Austin Township died Thursday, May 16, 2002, at Hills & Dales General Hospital of Cass City. She was born Nov. 19, 1914, in Harbor Beach, daughter of the late Robert and Rebecca (Schmidt) Haggert. She married Guy A. Soule on Nov. 26, 1932, in Harbor Beach at her residence. He preceded her in death on Sept. 18, 1989. Molly was a graduate of Harbor Beach Elementary School. She farmed with her husband and family. She was a member of the Ubly United Methodist Church since 1935. She was a member and former officer of the Ubly Miriam Chapter 214 Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed gardening, growing African violets and visiting, especially with family and grandchildren. She is survived by three children, Fannie Rebecca "Becky" (Babiszewski) Nieschulz of Pigeon, Robert Soule and his wife, Nila Jean, of Ubly, and Leona Warner and her husband, Wallace, of Elkton; 20 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Donna Soule; two sons-in-law, Michael Babiszewski and Lyle Nieschulz; three sisters, Ethel Andrews, Della Collings and Alice Hymer; four brothers, Orville, Irving, Lawrence and baby boy Harold Haggert. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 20, 2002, at the Ubly United Methodist Church. The Rev. Ellen Burns and the Rev. Robert Srock will officiate. Burial will be in Valley Cemetery in Ubly. There will be an Eastern Star service at 6 p.m. today at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly. Visitation is from 1:30 to 9:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Monday at the church. Christine Wolfe Christine Wolfe, 88, of Port Austin died Wednesday, May 15, 2002, at St. Joseph Hospital in Mount Clemens. She was born on Dec. 8, 1913, in Port Austin to the late Edward and Frances (Jimpkowski) Stockoski. Christine and Clemence "Stubby" Wolfe were married in August 1958. He preceded her in death in 1974. They owned Stubby's Bar and Grill in Hamtramck. Christine enjoyed cooking, gardening, fishing and flowers. She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and Ladies Sodality in Port Austin. She is survived by a daughter, Eileen Lerash of Richmond; a grandson, Kenneth Lerash of Lenox Township; a granddaughter, Karen Gamalski and her husband, Michael, of Port Huron; three great-granddaughters, Lynne and Pamela Lerash of Lenox Township and Elaine Gamalski of Port Huron; three brothers, Irwin Stockoski and his wife, Dorothy, of Port Austin, Leonard Stockoski and his wife, Rita, of Royal Oak and Raymond Stockoski of Port Austin; four sisters, Regina Fisher of Warren, Helen Lapka and her husband, Steve, of Clinton Township, Josephine Korleski of Kinde and Lillian Wills and her husband, LeRoy, of Port Austin; several nieces and nephews. Christine was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Leske; a daughter, Joanne Sokel; a son-in-law, Joseph Sokel; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Stockoski; two sisters, Emma Yaroch and Mary Palmer; four brothers-in-law, Edward Fisher, Bill Yaroch, Jim Palmer and Martin Korleski. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 20, 2002, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin with Fr. Surman officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery. There will be a rosary service at 2 p.m. today at MacAlpine Funeral Home- Gage Chapel in Kinde performed by the Monday Rosary Group of Our Lady of Satima. Fr. Surman will perform another rosary at 7 p.m. Sunday at the chapel. Visitation is from 1 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be offered to the Family Discretionary Fund. Monday, May 20, 2002 – None Tuesday, May 21, 2002 Margaret Faltyn Margaret L. Faltyn, 87, of Sebewaing, formerly of Bay Port, died Sunday afternoon, May 19, 2002, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. She was born March 19, 1915, in Bay Port, daughter of the late George W. and Katie (Flickinger) Harder. She was married to Ray Brown on Feb. 19, 1939. He preceded her in death in 1951. She then married Leonard Faltyn in 1953. He died in 1973. Margaret was employed as an assistant cashier at Bay Port State Bank for 15 years. She was a member of the Bay Port Church, Community of Christ, and was a member of the women's department of the church. She also was a member of the Bay Port Women's Club and was a great lover of music and an avid organ and piano player. She had devoted her whole life as a Christian woman dedicated to God. Surviving are two sisters, Carrie Bartlett of Sarasota, Fla., and Doris R. Albrecht of Sebewaing; her loving and caring niece, Rhea Walden of Bay Port; many other nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great nieces, great-great nephews; many friends of her church family and the Medallion Village in Sebewaing. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Iva Horton and Hilda Deering; and one brother, Floy Harder. Cremation has already taken place at the Sunset Valley Crematory in Bay City. A memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 25, 2002, at the Bay Port Church, Community of Christ in Bay Port. Elder Ervin Haley, Elder Terry Brown and Evangelist Donald B. Richards will officiate. Visitation will be 10 a.m. until the time of services Saturday at the church. Memorials may be made to the Bay Port Church, Community of Christ, in lieu of flowers. Wednesday, May 22, 2002 Glenn Buschlen Glenn Wilmer Buschlen, 81, of Pigeon passed away suddenly on Monday, May 22, 2002. He was born in Winsor Township on Aug. 1, 1920, son of the late William W. and Edna C. (Gregor) Buschlen and graduated from the Winsor School. On Sept. 14, 1940, he was united in marriage to Marie H. Moore at the Owendale Evangelical parsonage. Mr. Buschlen farmed throughout his lifetime and during the 1960's, he was a member of the Cooperative Elevator board. He was an active member of Salem United Methodist Church in Pigeon, where he served in many areas, including trustee, pastor-parish committee, administrative council and usher. He is survived by Marie, his wife of more than 61 years; five children, Eleanor Adams and her friend, Larry Loll, of Bay City, Ruth Creswell and her husband, Thomas, of Charlevoix, Richard Buschlen and his friend, Judy Jarvis, of Pigeon, Roger Buschlen and his wife, Sally, of Pigeon, and Gary Buschlen of Caseville; 10 grandchildren, Michelle Fortsch and her husband, Daniel, Stacey Gettel and her husband, Thomas, Michael Rosa and his wife, Teri, Marc Rosa, Connie Dubs and her husband, Roger, Scot Buschlen and his wife, Nancy, and Kathy Muether and her husband, Jeffrey, Lisa LePage and her husband, William, Brenda Hoffman and her husband, Derek, and Heather Buschlen; 14 great-grandchildren, Meaghan and Maureen Fortsch, Erin and Kate Gettel, Chloe and Madelane Rosa, Kyle and Kevin Dubs, Bryan Buschlen, Sarah and Michael Muether and Quinn, Lukas and Austin LePage; three sisters, Maxine Stirrett of Pigeon, Grace Reibling of Elkton and Shirley Zinnecker and her husband, William, of Cass City; four brothers, LeRoy Buschlen and his wife, Genevieve, and Duane Buschlen, all of Pigeon, Calvin Buschlen and his wife, Ann, of Elkton and Clifford Buschlen and his wife, Vivian, of Lake, Miss.; and several nieces and nephews, including one special nephew, Robin Buschlen. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Brian Buschlen. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 23, 2002, at Salem United Methodist Church, Pigeon, with Pastor Michael T. Sawicki officiating. Burial will be in Grand Lawn Cemetery in Winsor Township. Visitation will be 2 to 9 p.m. today at the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home in Pigeon and from 10 a.m. until the time of services Thursday at the church. Memorials may be made to Salem United Methodist Church. Alvin Burk Alvin R. "Fin" Burk, 75, of Decker died Monday, May 20, 2002, from injuries sustained in a traffic accident. He was born Dec. 13, 1926, in Waldenberg, Macomb County. He married Juanita P. Barfield on Feb. 22, 1947, in Bowling Green, Ohio. Fin served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He worked at the Sanilac County Garage as a mechanic. He owned Fin's Sinclair Service Station for many years. He was a Mac Toolman for a time. Fin worked for Hunt's Construction as a mechanic until his retirement. Fin enjoyed square dancing with his wife. He was a professional square dance caller and also gave lessons over the years. Fin had a business/hobby of engraving name tags. He was a member of the Michigan Square Dance Leaders Association and Shabbona United Methodist Church. At one time Fin was a Cub Scout leader and a Boy Scout leader. He was a private pilot and owned his own plane at one time. Alvin is survived by his wife, Juanita; children Alvin Burk and his wife, Kathy, of Woodbury, Minn., David L. Burk and his wife, Charlene, of Delton, James Burk and his wife, Rose, of Cass City, Ruby Burk of Albion and Diane Morrison and her husband, Greg, of Williamsburg; grandchildren Alvin R. Burk III, Kathy A. Burk and her friend, Corey Miller, Rebecca Burk, Amy Burk, Allen Burk and his wife, Tammy, Michael Russell and his wife, Kim, Angie Williams and her husband, Tom, Matthew Ramsey, Natalie Ramsey, Thomas Ramsey and Corey Edwardson; great-grandchildren Chloe Rose, Suzanne, Megan, Jason, Gabriel and Elizabeth; a brother, Alfred Burk and his wife, Mary, of Cass City; a sister, Ann Brede and her husband, Jim, of Shelby Township; several nieces and nephews; and Juanita's sister, Ona Barfield of Florida and stepmother, Frances Barfield of South Carolina. Memorials may be made to the Ronald McDonald House or the American Cancer Society. LeRoy Friedland LeRoy C. Friedland, 75, of Port Hope passed away Tuesday, May 21, 2002, at the Harbor Beach Community Hospital. Born in Port Hope on April 28, 1927, he was the son of the late John and Matilda (Hartz) Friedland. He and Dolores Dietiker were united in marriage on Dec. 24, 1949, in Port Hope. She preceded him in death on Dec. 6, 1999. LeRoy was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. LeRoy was a retired employee of Ford Motor Co., retiring in 1979. Surviving are a son, Michael Friedland and his wife, Darlene, of Livonia; three grandchildren, Jennifer McClaud and her husband, Christopher, Jill and Morris Flett and Michael Friedland; four great- grandchildren, Ashley, Taylor, Madison and Joshua McClaud; and five brothers, Donald of California, Ken of Mount Clemens, Lavern of Port Hope, Roger of Port Hope and Gerald of Florida. LeRoy was preceded in death by a sister, Marjorie Friedland; and by four brothers, Clarence, William, Clifford and Eugene Friedland. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 24, 2002, in the Ramsey Funeral Home in Harbor Beach. Burial will be in the Marquardt Cemetery in Port Hope. Visitation will be 1 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 10 a.m. until the time of the services Friday at the funeral home. Barbara Ignash Barbara J. Ignash, 66, of Port Austin died Monday, May 20, 2002, at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe. She was born May 22, 1935, in Highland Park, daughter of James and the late Harriette (Soper) Stone. She and Raymond (Pete) Ignash were married on Aug. 2, 1974, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Parisville. He preceded her in death on April 23, 2000. Barbara was a member of the American Legion Frank Horetski Post No. 499 Ladies Auxiliary in Port Austin. He enjoyed shopping and visiting with her friends. She is survived by two sisters, Sally Inglet and her husband, Lonnie, of Modesto, Calif., and Yvonne Abbott of Bellflower, Calif.; a nephew, Rusty Inglet and a niece, Linda Valentin, both of Modesto, Calif.; and several cousins and in-laws. She was preceded in death by a half-sister, Caroline Beringer. Cremation took place. Burial will be at St. Michael's Cemetery in Port Austin. A memorial service will take place at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by the Knoblock Funeral Home in Kinde. Mabel Riecher Mabel Riecher, 90, of Bad Axe passed away on Tuesday, May 21, 2002, at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe. She was born on Oct. 8, 1911, in Kinde, daughter of the late Max and Emma (Loss) Geyer. She married Lewis Riecher in 1975. He preceded her in death in 1992. She is survived by a sister, Edna Haldane of Bad Axe; a brother, Henry Geyer of Kinde; a stepson, Melvin Riecher and his wife, Mary, of Detroit; six step- grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Brown; and three brothers, William, Russell and Roy Geyer. Funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 23, 2002, at the Kaufman Funeral Home in Bad Axe. The Rev. Kenneth Lueke, pastor of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Bad Axe, will officiate. Interment will be in the Colfax Township Cemetery. Visitation will be 10 a.m. until the time of services at 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Marjorie Schultz Marjorie C. Schultz, 72, formerly of Bad Axe, has died. She was born Aug. 3, 1929, in Bad Axe. She moved to Detroit in 1950 and retired from Cunningham Drug Store in 1992. She was a member of St. Anne Sodality of Our Lady Queen of Heaven Church in Detroit. She enjoyed working with craft items. She was the beloved wife of Hubert; the dear mother of Jean Schultz; and the dear sister of Helen Simmons and Neil MacDonald; the dearest aunt of several nieces and nephews. A funeral mass will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 24, 2002, at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Church, corner of Terrell and Lantz in Detroit. A rosary service will take place at 3 p.m. and a scripture service will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Wasik Funeral Home, 11470 Thirteen Mile Road, west of Hoover Road in Warren. Moran of Pigeon passed away on Feb. 25, 2002, at Lakeland, Fla. Memorial services will take place at 11 a.m., May 25, 2002, at First United Methodist Church in Pigeon. Memorials may be made to the church. Thursday, May 23, 2002 Vickie Wurst Vickie A. Wurst, 49, of Pigeon died Tuesday evening, May 21, 2002, at Bay Regional Medical Center in Bay City. She was born Sept. 29, 1952, in Bad Axe and grew up in the Kinde area. Vickie lived in Huron County all her life, raising three children. Vickie was a homemaker but also was employed in the family business, Berne Enterprises, as a key person in environmental quality. She attended St. Roch Catholic Church in Caseville and enjoyed playing bingo, playing with her dog "Mokie," but most especially spending time with her family. Surviving are her husband, Keith; three children, daughter Kelly Greene of Clinton Township; sons Bryon Kanyak of Caseville and Tony Kanyak of Pigeon; her grandson, Corey; her mother, Arlene Wallace of Kinde; two sisters, Roxanne Dzuirgot of Redford and Kim Dukakis of Taylor; and two brothers, Jim Kerr of Redford and Bill Kerr of Riverview. A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, May 24, 2002, at the Champagne Funeral Chapel in Caseville. Cremation took place at Sunset Valley Crematory in Bay City.
