Local obituaries for the week beginning April 21, 2002 Sunday, April 21, 2002 Rose Chapon Rose M. Chapon, 90, of Essexville died Thursday, April 18, 2002, in Bay Medical Care Facility in Essexville. She was born on July 17, 1911, in Cement City, Texas to Michael and Mary (Gersha) Kalovits. She married Stephen Chapon on May 28, 1932, in Detroit. He died on Feb. 13, 1979. Rose worked for AC Spark Plug in Hamtramck for many years. She and her husband moved to Cass City from Clarkston after his retirement from the Department of Natural Resources. Rose was a former member of St. Pancratius Catholic Church, where she was very involved. She enjoyed needlework, cooking, bingo, crafts and her two dogs. Rose is survived by her grandchildren, Raymond J. Brashaw Jr., Stephen G. Brashaw, Pamela A. Brashaw, all of Bay City, Cheri R. Shay and her husband, Robert, of Lowell; great-grandchildren, Stephen R. Simmons and Misty A. Coss, sisters, Mary Toth of Temperance, Elizabeth Sakatch of Quincy, Ill.; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Rose Marie Brashaw; sister, Margaret Shaffer; brothers, John Kalovits and Michael Kalovits. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 22, 2002, at St. Pancratius Catholic Church in Cass City with the Rev. Steve Filion officiating. Interment is in Novesta Township Cemetery in Cass City. There will be a vigil service at 7:30 p.m. at Kranz Funeral Home in Cass City. Visitation is from 2 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday at the church. Memorials may be made to Bay Medical Care Facility. Ida Glaza Ida Glaza, 92, of Center Line died on Friday, April 19, 2002, at the St. John Macomb Hospital in Warren. She was born on Sept. 29, 1909 in Port Austin. She was a homemaker and lifetime member of the Altar Society at St. Michael Catholic Church in Port Austin. She volunteered for many years at the Fr. Murray Nursing Center in Center Line. Ida is survived by three daughters, Bernice Pawloski, Frances Garrow and Florence Gilcher; son, Theodore "Dave" Glaza and his wife, Betty; 22 grandchildren; 33 great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore. The funeral service will take place at 9:45 a.m. on Monday, April 22, 2002, at St. Clement Church at 25320 Van Dyke Road in Center Line. The Rev. Bernard Fraser will officiate. There will be a rosary at 7 tonight at the Ford Funeral Home at 26560 Van Dyke Road in Center Line. Faith Koehn Faith Lee Koehn, infant daughter of Juliann (Cook) and Trevor Koehn of Harbor Beach, went to be in the loving embrace of God on Thursday, April 18, 2002. She was born on April 18, 2002, at Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe. Faith is survived by her parents, Juliann and Trevor Koehn of Harbor Beach; grandparents, Anne and Earl Cook of Harbor Beach, and MaryLee and James Koehn of Harbor Beach; great-grandmothers, Delores Eppenbrock and Marie Koehn, both of Harbor Beach. Graveside services were conducted Saturday, April 20, 2002, at St. Anthony's Church Cemetery in Helena with Claudia Miller of Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church officiating. Ramsey Funeral Home of Harbor Beach handled the arrangements. Martin Korleski Martin F. Korleski, 74, lifelong resident of Kinde died Friday, April 19, 2002 at Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe. He was born Nov. 18, 1916, son of the late Michael and Catherine (Wadas) Korleski in Kinde. Martin and Josephine (Stockoski) Korleski were married Nov. 13, 1943. Martin enjoyed farming and his family, especially his great- granddaughter, Jenna, who was the joy of his life over the last year. He is survived by his wife, Josephine; two sons, Edward Korleski and his wife, Sue, of Chicago, and Dennis Korleski and his wife, Patricia, of Bad Axe; one daughter, Nancy Korleski and her friend, Cameron, of Shelby Township; one brother, Michael Korleski and his wife, Joan, of Kinde; two sisters, Rose Baranski and her husband, Bernie, and Helen Yaroch, of Kinde; three grandchildren, Delores Alexander and her husband, Darryl, of Warren, Anna Soeiero and her husband, Saucho, of Santa Fe, N.M., and Ian Korleski of Elmhurst, Ill.; one great-grandchild, Jenna Alexander. Martin was preceded in death by two sisters, Bernice Rice and Janette Yaroch; five brothers, Edward, Ted, Leo, Walter and Sylvester. Mass of Christian burial will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 22, 2002, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Kinde with Fr. Oniskiewicz and Fr. Surman officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery. A rosary will be offered by Fr. Surman at 7 p.m. Sunday. Visitation is from 1 to 9 p.m. today at MacAlpine Funeral Home-Gage Chapel. Daniel Tschirhart Daniel L. Tschirhart, 60, of East Lansing, formerly of Ruth, passed away Thursday, April 18, 2002, at his home. Mr. Tschirhart was a well-respected and committed attorney and was a former district judge. He was a character who will be dearly missed by his family and many friends. He was a devoted father to his two daughters, Jennifer L. Tschirhart and Lori A. Tschirhart. He is survived also by two sisters, Mary Ann Kubacki and her husband, Tony, and Sally Mowry and her husband, Jim; a brother, Tom Tschirhart and his wife, Janice; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eleanor and Joseph; and a brother, Paul. Funeral services took place on Saturday, April 20, 2002, in the Tiffany Funeral Home in Lansing with the Rev. Robert J. Besemer officiating. Burial took place today in SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Ruth. Monday, April 22, 2002 Lawrence Gwisdalla Mr. Lawrence K. "Larry" Gwisdalla, 48, of Port Sanilac, formerly of Paris Township, passed away Friday, April 19, 2002, at St. Mary's Medical Center of Saginaw after a long illness. He was born on Nov. 30, 1953, in Detroit to the late Frank and Theresa (Jaskowski) Gwisdalla. He was never married. Larry worked at the Chrysler Lynch Road plant for a few years. He was a truck driver for various companies for the last couple of years. He was a parishioner of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Parisville. He enjoyed the lottery and visiting with his great-nephews. Larry is survived by his two brothers, Walter Gwisdalla and his wife, Betty, of Ferndale, and David Gwisdalla of Warren; two nephews; one niece; and one special niece, Theresa Caird and her husband, James, of Sandusky. The funeral mass will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at St. Mary's Catholic Church of Parisville. The Rev. Charles Hammond, pastor will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. There will be a parish vigil service at 8 p.m. today at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly. Tuesday, April 23, 2002 Margaret Cook Mrs. Margaret "Marge" Cook, 79, of Parisville passed away Sunday evening, April 21, 2002, at her residence while under hospice care. Margaret was born July 28, 1922, in Ruth to the late August and Margaret (Noechel) Hunsanger. She married Arthur Cook on Sept. 9, 1944, at St. John's Church of West Dearborn. Marge attended country school. She worked at Buhl and Son Hardware of Detroit for four years. She was co-owner of Cook's Grocery of Parisville from 1945 to 1963. She worked at Murray Ladies Apparel for 28 years and Kritzman's for five years before retiring in 1996. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Parisville. She was a former officer and current member of the St. Mary Rosary Sodality. She was chairperson for many years for the St. Mary Picnic in Parisville. She enjoyed cooking, the Detroit Tigers, baking, gardening, sewing, music and visiting with family. Marge is survived by her husband, Arthur, of Parisville; three daughters, Julianne Cook of Midland, Noreen Donnellon and her husband, James, of Minden City and Susan Swartz and her husband, William, of Howell; four sons, Anthony Cook and his special friend, Cathy McDonald, of Bay City, Charles Cook of Chicago, Ill., Timothy Cook of Grosse Pointe Woods and Joseph Cook and his wife, Andra, of Howell; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four sisters, Terese Doherty and her husband, Earl, of Royal Oak, Bernadette Doe and her husband, Oliver, of Chicago, Martha Immerman of Ruth and Mary Jane Maloney of St. Clair; three brothers, John Hunsanger of West Bloomfield, Ben Hunsanger and his wife, Deloris, of Ruth and Carl Hunsanger of Ruth; and two sisters-in-law, Beatrice Mitch and her husband, Joseph, of Port Austin and Blanche Hunsanger of Harper Woods. Marge was preceded in death by four brothers, Bernard, Herb, Leo and Larry Hunsanger. A funeral mass will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 24, 2002, at St. Mary's Catholic Church of Parisville. The Rev. Charles Hammond, pastor, and the Rev. Todd Arnberg will officiate. Cremation will follow at Sunset Valley Crematory of Bay City. There will be a vigil service at 7 p.m. and a joint rosary at 8 p.m. by the St. Mary Men's Club and the St. Mary Rosary Sodality this evening at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly. Visitation will be 2:30 to 9:30 p.m. today and 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Bay Area Hospice. Charles Rogers Charles E. Rogers, 78, of Harbor Beach passed away Monday, April 22, 2002, at his home with hospice care after a short illness. Born on May 20, 1923, in Port Huron, he was the son of the late John and Mable (Dunn) Rogers. Charles and Betty Teeple were united in marriage on Oct. 12, 1946, in Port Huron. She preceded him in death on Sept. 11, 1999. He was a retired employee of the Detroit Edison Co., retiring in 1985 after working for 40 years. Charles served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a life member of the VFW Post No. 9344 in Harbor Beach. Charles is survived by his children, Richard Rogers and his wife, Dorothy, of Fort Meyers, Fla., James Rogers and his wife, Deb, of Ortonville and Betty Cookson of Lawrenceville, Ga.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Phyllis Banning of Nevada, June Beauchemin and her husband, Donald, of Port Huron and Marcia Sue Boettner and her husband, Gerald, of Marysville. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Ellen Rogers, in 1979; a brother, Chester Rogers; and three sisters, Zoretta Earl, Marvel Davis and Ila Wehner. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 24, 2002, in the Ramsey Funeral Home in Harbor Beach with the Rev. Clarence VanConant, pastor of the United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Rock Falls Cemetery with the military service conducted by the VFW Post of Harbor Beach. Visitation will be 1 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. until the time of services Wednesday at the funeral home. Wednesday, April 24, 2002 Barbara Eldridge Barbara Iseler Eldridge, 80, of Chesapeake, Va., died Monday, April 22, 2002, in Suffolk, Va. Mrs. Eldridge was born on Jan. 13, 1922, in Huron County to Mary Hubbard and William Charles Iseler. She married Karson Max Eldridge in 1948. They made their home in Michigan, Florida and Virginia. She was a graduate of Port Hope High School and Harper Hospital School of Nursing, Detroit. Through her life, she worked in hospitals, nursing homes and public heath nursing. She is survived by her sons, retired U.S. Navy Capt. John K. Eldridge of Norfolk, Va., and the Rev. Thomas D. Eldridge of Pilot, N.C.; daughters-in-law, Diana M. Eldridge and Kathy R. Eldridge; grandsons, Schuyler K. Eldridge and Seth T. Eldridge; a sister, Rebecca I. Lange of Freeland; sisters-in-law Mary K. Carter of Clearwater, Fla., Ramona Tschirhart and Alta Iseler, both of Port Hope; and a brother-in-law, Fred Featherstone of Port Charlotte, Fla. A memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 25, 2002, at Jackson Memorial Baptist Church, 4316 Bruce Road, Chesapeake, Va. Final inurnment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church or the charity of the donor's choice. Arrangements were handled by the Kellum Funeral Home, Bonney Road Chapel. Harold Wissner Harold N. Wissner, 82, of Sebewaing was taken to his Lord in Heaven on Tuesday morning, April 23, 2002. He died at his home following a brief illness. He was born Feb. 16, 1920, in Sebewaing, son of the late Rudolph and Frieda (Neu) Wissner. He was united in marriage to Nora A. Lindeman on Oct. 18, 1941. She preceded him in death on March 13, 1995, after 53 years of marriage. On Sept. 12,1998, he was married to Orpha Bauer, who survives him. Harold was co-owner and operator of Sebewaing Concrete Products from 1954 until his retirement in 1974. He was a member of New Salem Lutheran Church and had served on many boards. He was a life member of the Sebewaing American Legion Post No. 293 and the Sebewaing VFW Post No. 4115. He also served on the Sebewaing Village Council. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Diane Strieter and her husband, Paul, and Larraine Ricker, all of Sebewaing; two grandsons, Brian Strieter and his wife, Rachel, of Frankenmuth, and Troy Strieter of Sebewaing; precious great-granddaughter, Hope Brianne Strieter, of Frankenmuth; one sister, Ruth Dronsella and her husband, Walter, of Bad Axe; two brothers, Victor Wissner and his wife, Christine, and Arnold Wissner and his wife, Esther, all of Sebewaing; and several nieces and nephews. He also is survived by Orpha's family, Larry Kuhl and his wife, Sandy, of Sebewaing, Wayne Bauer and his wife, Kathleen, of Frankenmuth and Gary Bauer and his wife, Marsha, of Jackson; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Gertrude and Luella Wissner and Irene Leiterman; and two brothers, Raymond and Roland Wissner. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 25, 2002, at New Salem Lutheran Church. The Rev. William Mayhew will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Dinkel- Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing and he will lie in state from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services Thursday at the church. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the charity of the donor's choice. Thursday, April 25, 2002 Larry Britt Larry W. Britt, 56, of Burkburnett, Texas died unexpectedly on Saturday, April 13, 2002, at Sheppard Air Force Base Hospital in Wichita Falls, Texas. He was born Sept. 9, 1945, in Bad Axe to Willard and Geraldine (Kelly) Britt. He attended Ubly Community Schools. Larry retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1985 after 22 years of service. He was a Vietnam veteran. He married Jacqueline Allison on Sept. 16, 1978, in England. He was the current Federal Fire Protection Inspector at Sheppard Air Force Base. He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline Britt; one daughter, Larissa Parkey; one son, Gareth Britt, all of Burkburnett; his parents, Willard and Geraldine Britt of Bad Axe; two brothers, Richard Britt and his wife, Patricia, of Cass City and James Britt of Sandusky. Services took place at the Sheppard Air Force Base Chapel. Information was supplied by MacAlpine Funeral Home of Bad Axe. Truman Hebner Truman E. (Heb) Hebner died April 16, 2002, at his home in Orlando, Fla., after a long illness. He was born Sept. 10, 1919, in Detroit and lived in Bad Axe and Vassar until 1965 when he and his wife of 42 years moved to Florida. Heb, as he was known to his many friends, owned Hebner Block Co. and worked in construction for many years. In Florida, he worked as maintenance supervisor for Super Foods Co. until his retirement in 1983. Besides his wife Loretta, he is survived by her sons, Walt Logan of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Doug Logan of Belleville, Ill.; his daughters, Tamie Schelke of Bad Axe and Tracie Couzens of Tucson, Ariz.; five granddaughters; one grandson; a sister, Elaine Wensley of Ellensburg, Wash.; and several nieces and nephews. He was a member of Tuskawilla Presbyterian Church where memorial services took place on Saturday, April 20, 2002. Glenn McCarroll Glenn G. McCarroll, 77, of Port Hope passed away Wednesday morning, April 24, 2002, at his home under hospice care following a long illness. Born in Detroit on April 19, 1925, he was the son of the late Raymond and Alvera (Rose) McCarroll. He and Ethel Kacir were united in marriage on Nov. 24, 1945, in Detroit. Glenn was the owner of Spartan Industries in Mount Clemens, Fraser and Harbor Beach, as well as Alco Simplex and Alcolite Products. He was a member of the Port Hope-Grindstone Sportsman's Club and the Moose Lodge in Bad Axe. He is survived by his wife, Ethel McCarroll of Port Hope; his children, Patricia Dettloff and her husband, Bruce, of New Baltimore, Dr. Brian McCarroll and his wife, Janice, of Sterling Heights, Gwen Chater and her husband, John, of Camarillo, Calif., and Kathy Stanislaw and her husband, Garrett, of New Baltimore; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one brother, Raymond McCarroll of Grosse Pointe. Memorial services will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 27, 2002, in the Ramsey Funeral Home in Harbor Beach with Fr. Bill Emil officiating. Cremation will follow in Sunset Valley Crematory in Bay City. Visitation will be 11 a.m. until the time of services Saturday at the funeral home. Pearl Menzel Pearl Marie Menzel, 79, of Mayville died Tuesday, April 23, 2002, in Saginaw at St. Mary's Medical Center. Pearl was born July 15, 1922, in Pigeon to William and Luanna (Weidman) Bechler. She lived in Mayville for the past 34 years and was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. She is survived by a son, Dale Bechler of Mayville; a daughter, Linda Berry and her husband, Daniel, of Mayville; two brothers, Roland Bechler and his wife, Phyllis, and Clare Bechler and his wife, Donna, both of Pigeon; one sister-in-law, Mildred Bechler of Pigeon; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold, in 1985; and a brother, Robert Bechler, in 2002. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, April 26, 2002, at St. Paul Lutheran Church of Mayville with Pastor Terry Balogh officiating. Interment will be in the Fremont Township Cemetery. Helen Tono Helen M. Tono, 79, of Bad Axe passed away Wednesday, April 24, 2002, at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe. She was born July 2, 1922, in Huron County, daughter of the late Xavier and Sophia (Lemanski) Respondek. Helen and Edward Tono were married on Nov. 15, 1947. They resided in Detroit until his death in 1974. She then returned to Bad Axe and became a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Fifty and Over Club. Helen enjoyed reading, bingo and playing cards. She is survived by her sister, Rita Champagne of Bad Axe; a brother, Lawrence Respondek and his wife , Elizabeth, of Bad Axe; a sister-in-law, Helen Tono of Sterling Heights; six nieces, Sharon Jensen of Bad Axe, Patricia Stephenson of Bad Axe, Linda English and her husband, Alan, of Bad Axe, Bonnie Kanaski and her husband, Dale, of Caro, Connie Bambach and her husband, Max, of Kinde, and Pamela Burns and her husband, Robert, of Sterling Heights; six nephews, Dennis Watchowski of Ohio, Mark Watchowski and his wife, Loretta, of Ohio, Larry Respondek and his wife, Connie, of Bad Axe, Gary Respondek and his wife, Rose, of Bad Axe, Donald Champagne of Florida, and Ronald Champagne of Caro; an uncle, George Lemanski of Bad Axe; and an aunt, Connie Mageski of Croswell. She was preceded in death by a sister, Irene Watchkowski. Mass of Christian burial will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 27, 2002, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. Fr. John Killop will officiate. Burial will take place in Sacred Heart Cemetery. There will be a scripture service at 6 p.m. Friday at the MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe. Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. this evening, from 1 to 9 p.m. Friday, and from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Friday, April 26, 2002 John Radloff John "Jack" Radloff, 72, passed away earlier this month at his home in Midland. He was born January 25, 1930, the son of Albert and Katherine (Otto) Radloff of Berne. He was baptized Feb. 16, 1930, and was confirmed on April 2, 1944. He attended Berne Lutheran Elementary School, graduating in 1944. He then attended Pigeon High School. After high school graduation, he attended Bay City Junior College in Bay City. He served in the U.S. Army before his career at the Dow Chemical Co., which spanned 36 years, beginning in 1950 until his retirement in 1986. During his career at Dow, he worked in the office of the Operations Vice President Levi Leathers and his responsibilities included the gathering of data on capitol projects. At the time of his retirement, he was working in the Technology Center area at Dow. Mr. Radloff maintained his membership at the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Berne but regularly attended worship services at Good Shepherd Evangelical Lutheran Church in Midland. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Louise Radloff and his parents, Albert and Katherine. He also leaves cousins in California, Arizona, Saginaw and Pigeon. His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 27, 2002, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Berne. Pastor James A. Gorsegner, pastor will present the liturgy for the funeral service and Pastor John C. Seifert of Good Shepherd Evangelical Lutheran Church in Midland will offer the funeral sermon. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home in Pigeon. 1
