Local obituaries for the week beginning July 21, 2002 Sunday, July 21, 2002 Lorelei Holmes Lorelei Kay Holmes, 64, of Sebewaing, passed away Friday July 19, 2002 at her home following a six-month illness. She was born Jan. 18, 1938 in Unionville, daughter of the late Elmer William and Rose H. (Gotham) Hahn. She was united in marriage to Arlo Dean Holmes on May 11, 1972. Lorelei had been employed at Automotive Industries in Owendale for 24 years before retiring several years ago. She was a member of New Salem Lutheran Church in Sebewaing. Surviving, besides her husband, Arlo Dean, are one daughter, Beverly Tietz, and her husband, Jeffrey, of Unionville; three grandchildren, Jeremy, Joshua and Lacey Tietz; two sisters, two brothers and spouses; Mabel and Arthur Hase of St. Clair Shores, Annabel Diefenbach of Cass City, Larry and Lynn Hahn of Sebewaing, and Allen and Karen Hahn of Unionville; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one infant daughter, Barbara Lynn Engelhardt; four brothers, Arnold, William, Charles and Franklin Hahn, four sisters, Donna Fritz, Arlene McCallum, Mamie Tabar and Betty Wing. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, July 22, 2002 at New Salem Lutheran Church in Sebewaing. Vacancy pastor James Plocher will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from noon until 9 p.m. today at the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing. She will lie in state from 10 a.m. until the time of service Monday at the church. Memorials may be given to New Salem Lutheran Church or the donor's choice. Harold Hunt Harold Stanley Hunt, 72, of Deford, passed away Friday morning, July 19, 2002 at Bay Medical Center of Bay City. He was born Sept. 16, 1929 in Tyre, son of the late Dewitt and Mary (Guigar) Hunt. He married Ila Jean Neiman on April 14, 1951 at the Baptist Church of Cass City. She preceded him in death on April 3, 2001. He was a graduate of the Freiburg Country School. He served in the U.S. Army in the Korean War. He worked for Budd Wheel in Detroit and was employed at Active Industries of Elkton for 40 years as a metal finisher. He retired in 1991. He was a member of the Cass City V.F.W. Post. He was an avid hunter, enjoyed auctions of horse sales and farm equipment, and vacationing with his wife. He is survived by one daughter, Mary Lawson of Deford; three sons, Jerry Hunt and his wife, Carol, of Meeker, Okla., Dan Hunt of Harrisonburg, Va., Donald Hunt and his wife Sandy, of Webberville; 12 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; one brother, Calvin Hunt of Ubly; two sisters, Maryann Walsh and her husband, Don, of Ubly; Marie Sherman of Ubly; one daughter-in-law, Martha Hunt of Shawnee, Okla. He was preceded in death by his son, Tom; two brothers Duane and Gerald; one sister, Joyce Schmidt. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, July 22, 2002 at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home of Ubly. Mr. Charles Emmert of Novesta Church of Christ of Cass City will officiate. Burial will be in the Elkland Cemetery of Cass City with graveside military rites conducted by the Cass City V.F.W. Post. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today and from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials are requested to the Family Discretionary Fund. Linus "Mike" Maurer Linus "Mike" Stephen Maurer, 81, of Ubly passed away Friday, July 19, 2002 at Sunny Acres Nursing Home of Bad Axe after a long illness. Mike was born Feb. 18, 1921 in Parisville to the late Leo F. and Helen (Murray) Maurer. He married Lila H. Walker on Aug. 30, 1944 at St. Columbkille Catholic Church of Sheridan Corners. Mike was a graduate of the Maurer Elementary School, and a 1939 graduate of Ubly High School. He farmed with his family. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving in Japan. He was a parishioner of St. John Catholic Church of Ubly since 1944 and was a former usher there. Mike worked at Bukoski Dealership in the parts department for five years and Ubly Tractor Service for five years. He drove a school bus for the Ubly Schools for nine years from 1950 to 1959. He owned and operated Mike's Shoe Repair. He was a driver of Gelco Dispatch of Flint for 13 years, retiring in 1982. Mike was a member of the Ubly Fire Department for 28 years. He was a member and officer of the Thumb Veteran's Organization No. 1, the Ubly Fox Hunter's Club and the Zurek Graham Ubly Post No. 6965. He was a former member of the Veteran's of Foreign War Ruth Post No. 5740. He was a member and former officer of the Ubly Community Club. He was a four-time cast member of the Alabama Jubilee Production. He bowled with the Al Puvalowski Team League in Ubly. He also bowled on Sunday and Tuesday nights in the mixed doubles league. Mike is survived by his wife, Lila, of Ubly; three daughters, Lana Gordon and her husband, Gregory, of Port Austin, Elaine Lansing of Chandler, Ariz., Lois Hill and her husband, Marvin, of Ruth; five grandchildren, Brandy, Courtney and Erin Gordon, Adam and Andrea Hill; one great grandchild, Mason Pechette; four sisters, Blanche Rumptz and her husband, Archie, of Ubly, Norine Williamson and her husband, Edward, of Sterling Heights, Leta Duda and her husband, George, of Mount Clemens, Dorothy Zurek and her husband, Lawrence, of Clinton Township; one step-brother Marvin Tschirhart and his wife, Iva, of Ubly; three step-sisters, Madeline Wheaton of Fort Meyers, Fla., Emma Geiger and her husband, Louis, of Cass City, Blanche Hunsanger of Harper Woods; one sister-in-law, Virginia Maurer of Bad Axe. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Joanne Marie in 1965; step-mother Veronica Bukoski; one sister, Mary Maurer; one brother, Ervin Maurer; one step sister Bernice Bouverette; one step brother Leonard Tschirhart. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday July 23, 2002 at St. John Catholic Church of Ubly. Rev. T.J. Fleming, pastor of St. John, will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery with graveside military honors by the Ubly Veteran's Organization. There will be a parish vigil service at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. today, from 2 to 9:30 p.m. Monday, and from 8 to 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home. Memorials may be made the Family Discretionary Fund. Monday, July 22, 2002 - None Tuesday, July 23, 2002 Deward L. Trepkowski Deward (Dewey) Leo Trepkowski, 68, of Cape Coral, Fla. passed away Sunday, July 21, 2002, at the Hope Hospice House after a short illness. Deward was born June 26, 1934, in Deckerville to the late Walter and Minnie (Jaskowski) Trepkowski. He married Mary Margaret (Peggy) Mathias on May 28, 1960, in Grosse Ile. Deward was a graduate of Cedardale Elementary School and a 1952 graduate of Bad Axe High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in Japan. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Elks Club of Cape Coral. Deward is survived by his wife, Mary Margaret of Cape Coral; three daughters, Lisa Wellenbacher, Jill Muller and her husband, Charlie, and Anne Marie Searls and her husband, Jeffery, all of Cape Coral; one son, David Trepkowski and his wife, Carrie, of Santa Clarita, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; four sisters, Betty Cornett, Doris Holz and her husband, Kenneth, Mary Ann Brown and her husband, Wilburt, all of Bad Axe, and Nancy Smith and her husband, Gerald, of Bay City; one sister-in-law, Patricia Trepkowski. He was preceded in death by one brother, James Trepkowski and brother-in-law Ernest Cornett. A memorial mass took place at 3 p.m. Monday, July 22, 2002, at the Coral Ridge Funeral Home in Cape Coral with the Rev. Fr. John Deary officiating. Memorials may be made to the family discretionary fund. Wednesday, July 24, 2002 Bonnie Lowry Bonnie M. Lowry, 73, of Port Austin passed away on Monday, July 22, 2002, at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe following an extended illness. She was born on Jan. 20, 1929, in Illinois, daughter of the late John F. Sr. and Deena (Manus) Pickering. She married Kenneth D. Lowry on Nov. 1, 1958 in Warren. He preceded her in death on Nov. 15, 1985. Mrs. Lowry was a member of the Bad Axe Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She enjoyed bowling at Biff's Bowling Alley in Kinde. She is survived by two daughters, Karen Kamello Sisco of Harrison and Tonya Lowry of Harbor Beach; three sons, Kenneth Lowry Jr. of Caseville, Guy Lowry of Bad Axe and Mark Lowry of Caseville; two stepsons, Mike Lowry and his wife, Shirley, of Ohio and Dean Hawk of Arizona; five step-daughters, Carol Celsey and her husband, Chuck, of Warren, Janet Good and her husband, Bill, Linda Burkowitz of Warren, Wanda Shorkey and her husband, Ray, of Warren and Nancy Lowry of Kentucky; one sister, Mary Lumitta of Warren; 59 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Jack Pickering; one stepson, Bob Lowry. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 25, 2002, at Kaufman Funeral Home on Bad Axe. Officiating will be Pres. William Andrews of the Bad Axe Church of Christ of Latter Day Saints. Visitation is from 3 to 9 p.m. today and 10 a.m. until the time of the services Thursday at the funeral home. Simon Schmitt Simon H. "Smitty" Schmitt, 62, of Elgin, Ill. and formerly of Bad Axe passed away on Wednesday April 17, 2002, in Elgin after a sudden heart attack. He was born on Nov. 11, 1939, in Bad Axe, son of the late John and Frances (Heleski) Schmitt. He married Mary Hartman. Smitty was a graduate of the Maurer School and a 1958 graduate of Ubly High School. He served in the U.S. Navy. He worked for the city of Chicago. He then worked for Precision Refrigeration in Elgin, Ill., until he retired in November 2001. He was a former officer and member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No. 799. They honored him at the service. Smitty is survived by his wife, Mary; two sons, two daughters; 13 step-children; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; five brothers, Carl Schmidt and his wife, Joan, of Fallbrook, Calif., James Schmidt and his wife, Irene, of Ubly, John, Frances and Bernard, all of Bad Axe; one sister, Helen Decker and her husband, Lon, of San Jose, Calif. Smitty was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister. Funeral services were conducted on Saturday April 20, 2002, in Elgin. Interment was private. Information was provided by Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly. Thursday, July 25, 2002 – None Friday, July 26, 2002 Frances Lawrence Frances C. Lawrence, 96, of Bad Axe died Thursday, July 25, 2002. Mrs. Lawrence was born Aug. 24, 1905, in Grand Rapids, Minn. to the late Joseph and Mary (Cameron) Laisure. Miss Frances Laisure and Walter Lawrence were united in marriage Nov. 28, 1925, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. Mr. Lawrence preceded his wife in death on Oct. 23, 1981. Frances lived in Bad Axe since 1925. She was a parishioner of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Bad Axe for many years. She was a former member of the parish council and was a charter member of the Daughters of Isabella Fidelis Regina Circle No. 608 of Bad Axe. Frances was a Detroit Tigers fan. She enjoyed flowers, cooking and visiting with her family and friends. Mrs. Lawrence is survived by one daughter, Mary Porze and her husband, Alex, of Coloma; three sons, Fred and his wife, Rita, of Green Valley, Ariz., George and his wife, Frances A., of Sebewaing and William "John" and his wife, Gertrude, of Saginaw; 14 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant son, Joseph Lawrence; two brothers, Fred and Donald Laisure; and a sister, Mary Belle Jones. Mass of Christian burial will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, July 29, 2002, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Bad Axe. Fr. Cornelius MacEachin will officiate. Burial will take place at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Bad Axe. A parish wake scripture will be offered at 8 p.m. followed by a rosary by the Daughters of Isabella at 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be offered to the family discretionary fund. Joann Morrison Joann N. Gucwa Morrison, 56, of Madison Heights passed away on Thursday, July 11, 2002, at Botsford Hospital of a heart attack. Funeral services were conducted on July 15, 2002, at St. Vincent's Catholic Church in Madison Heights and burial was in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield. Florence Rosinski Mrs. Florence E. Rosinski, 83, of Grass Lake and formerly of Dearborn passed away Tuesday, July 23, 2002, in Cedar Knoll Care Center of Grass Lake. She was born Sept. 16, 1918, in Tyre to Nicholas Speck and her mother's name is unknown. She married Stanley Rosinski on Nov. 25, 1935, at St. John Catholic Church of Ubly. He preceded her in death on Aug. 24, 1999. Florence was a graduate of a country school. She was a former member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church of Dearborn and St. John Catholic Church of Ubly. Florence is survived by one son: Gary Rosinski of Onondaga; six grandchildren; Jennifer, Jamie, Jeff, Julie, Jeanne and Jill; five great-grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Connie Rosinski of Ubly; one sister-in-law, Verna Sperkowski and her husband, Leonard, of Ubly. Funeral mass for Florence Rosinski was to take place at 10 a.m. today, Friday, July 26, 2002 at St. John Catholic Church of Ubly. The Rev. T. J. Fleming, pastor, was to officiate. Burial was to be in the church cemetery at 9:30 a.m. today where family and friends were meeting prior to mass. Arrangements were handled by the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home of Ubly. 1
