Local obituaries for the week beginning March 24, 2002 Sunday, March 24, 2002 Douglas Brakenberry Douglas Edward Brakenberry, 84, a retired Colfax Township farmer, died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe under hospice care. He was born on March 20, 1918, at the home of his parents, the late Edward and Delia (Wilder) Brakenberry in Colfax Township. Douglas attended McDowell Country School. On March 1, 1941, he was united in marriage to Minnie Motz at the Assembly of God Church in Bad Axe. He and Minnie lived in Monroe for two years and then moved to Colfax Township where they lived and farmed most of their lives. He retired in 1976 and they moved to Oliver Township. He was a member of the Evangel Life Assembly of God Church where he was a board member. He was a member of the Thumb Two Cylinder Club, also. Surviving are his wife, Minnie; four children, Marilyn Smithers and her husband, John, of Elkton, Marie Schember and her husband, Duane, of Pigeon, Ralph Brakenberry and his wife, Linda, of Pigeon and Ron Brakenberry and his wife, Brenda, of Bad Axe; 10 grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, June Nicholls of Woodhaven and Irene Benzo and her husband, Warren, of Brooklyn. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Evangel Life Assembly of God Church in Bad Axe. The Rev. Robert E. Smith, pastor, will officiate with burial in Riverside Cemetery in Elkton. She was born May 2, 1906, in Kilmanagh, daughter of the late Alexander and Marie Spomer. On Aug. 12, 1926, she was married to Herbert C. Heider in Kilmanagh. He preceded her in death in July of 1979. Mrs. Heider was the first woman school teacher at the St. John Lutheran School in Kilmanagh. She also was a seamstress at Satow's Furniture in Sebewaing. She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sebewaing and a member of the Immanuel Ladies Aid. Her survivors include four grandchildren, Linda Wiltse and her husband, Bob, Larry Heider and his wife, Becky, all of Sebewaing, Ann Zsido and her husband, Art, of Rochester, and Sue Fagan and her husband, Michael, of Warren; six great-grandchildren, Ryan and Adam Wiltse, Matt and Nicole Zsido, and Angie and David Fagan; daughter-in-law, Dorothy Heider of Caseville; special friend, Anna Gall; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by four children, Donald, William, Herbert A. and Sharon Heider; four brothers, Phillip, Alex, Edward and William Spomer; a sister, Hilda Satow; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 25, 2002, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sebewaing, with the Rev. Albert Bahr and the Rev. James L. Nihiser officiating. Paul Lemanski Mr. Paul Lemanski, 92, of Harbor Beach died Wednesday, March 20, 2002, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. He was born June 12, 1909, in Parisville, the son of the late James and Martha (Warczak) Lemanski. He married Lucy Ertman on May 26, 1935, at St. Louis the King Catholic Church in Detroit. She preceded him in death on July 28, 1988. He was a graduate of a country school. He farmed with his family. He sailed the Great Lakes for years. He lived in Detroit and was millwright at General Motors Corp. for 37 years before retiring in 1972. He was a parishioner of St. Louis the King Catholic Church until 1972. He moved to Harbor Beach in 1973 and has been a parishioner of Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church. He enjoyed gardening and planting. He is survived by his children, Calvin and his wife, Charmaine, of Troy, James and his wife, Lynn, of Warren, Mary Ann Meesseman and her husband, Raymond, of Macomb, Donna Weerts and her husband, James, of San Mateo, Fla., seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Agnes White of Roseville; one brother, Arthur Lemanski of Hamtramck. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Frank, Alfred and Elmer; two sisters, Grace Biddlingmeier and Freida Smielewski. A funeral mass will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 27, 2002, at Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach. The Rev. Gerald Kukla, pastor will officiate. There will be vigil service at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Elfriede Koepf Elfriede A. Schwara Koepf, 71, of Cass City went to be the Lord on Thursday, March 21, 2002, at the home of Brian and Betsy McHugh. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 25, 2002, at St. Pancratius Catholic Church in Cass City with the Rev. Steve Filion officiating. Interment is in Novesta Cemetery. Visitation is from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today with a vigil service at 7:30 p.m. at Kranz Funeral Home in Cass City, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church. Memorials may be made to St. Pancratius Catholic Church. Monday, March 25, 2002 James Bonini Lt. Col. James Irving Bonini, ret., 79, of Sebewaing passed away Saturday, March 23, 2002, at St. Mary's Medical Center of Saginaw. He was born in Franklin Mine, on Nov. 1, 1922, son of the late James and Stella Pearl (Gale) Bonini. On Oct. 30, 1943, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Bendler at College Station, Texas. She preceded him in death on Feb. 22, 1995. Mr. Bonini retired on July 1, 1970, as a Lieutenant Colonel with the United States Air Force. During the Korean conflict, he flew the F-86 Sabre fighter jet. During the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, he was a B-47 command pilot. In Vietnam, he was a command pilot for the C-130. In retirement, he continued to fly for pleasure and flew also as a stunt pilot for local air shows. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed boating. He was also an accomplished artist and wood carver. Mr. Bonini was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sebewaing. He is survived by two sons, James O. Bonini of Conway, S.C. and Robert Bonini and his wife, Margo, of Sebewaing; three daughters, Christine Morford and her husband, Gary, of Boise, Idaho, Ruth Ann Hurst and her husband, Thomas, of Saginaw, and Charlotte Mohr and her husband, Timothy, of Saginaw; nine grandchildren; one great-grandson; two sisters, Alberta St. Andre of Lake Linden and Eleanor Weber and her husband, Bob, of Manistique; two brothers, Roy G. Bonini and his wife, Lenore, and Charles R. Bonini and his wife, Paulette, all of Lake Linden; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Carole Christine "Carrie" Morford; three sisters, Ruth Malgren, Lillian Sarazin, and F. Tully Bonini; and a brother, Albert C. Bonini. Memorials may be made to the Sebewaing Library. Eldon L. Clark Eldon L. Clark, 62, of Meade Township near Elkton passed away Sunday morning, March 24, 2002, at Bay Medical Center in Bay City following a lengthy illness. Mr. Clark was born Aug. 31, 1939 in Meade Township, son of the late William and Irene (Witherspoon) Clark. He and Miss Roberta L. McPhail were married Aug. 15, 1964 at St. Peters Lutheran Church in Kinde. The couple lived in the Wixom-Hudson vicinity for the past 32 years in Meade Township. Mr. Clark attended Riverdale Country School, graduated from Elkton High School in 1957, and enrolled at the Railroad Communications School in Kansas City, Mo. For a time he was a test driver at Ford Motor Co., He was a foreman at the former Active Industries in Elkton and did carpenter work with his brother. Eldon enjoyed visiting with his family and friends, gardening and bird watching. Surviving are his wife, Roberta; two daughters; Linda L. Clark and her fiance, Todd Smith, of Bay City, and Cindy L. Clark living at home; two sons, Scott R. Clark of Annapolis, Md., Michael J. Clark of Elkton; one grandson, Troy Philip Clark; three brothers, Lester Clark and his wife, Donna, of Caseville, Melvin Clark and his wife, Wanda, of Lake, Bruce Clark and his wife, Ruth, of Elkton; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Clark was preceded in death by four sisters, Beulah Hass, Doris Hass, Wilma Clark, Sharon Eisinger and two brothers, Arthur Clark and Merlin Clark. Edward F. Elftman Edward Franz Elftman, 98, of Elkton passed away Saturday, March 23, 2002, at his home. He was born in McKinley Township on June 10, 1903, son of the late Fredrick and Hulda (Fick) Elftman. On March 8, 1930, he was married to Viola Damm in Pigeon. She preceded him in death in August 1935. He was united in marriage to Meta Licht in Indiana on Dec. 28, 1938. She survives him. Mr. Elftman was a farmer and lived on Campbell Road throughout his lifetime. He was a member of the Chandler Township Board for 25 years and was supervisor for 15 years. He was chairman of the Huron County Board of Supervisors in 1965. He was a member of Cross Lutheran Church in Pigeon as well as a member of the church board for 12 years. In addition to his wife Meta, he is survived by a daughter, Maxine Walsh and her husband, Paul, of Pigeon; six grandchildren, Cheri Diebel and her husband, Ronald "Jake", of Elkton, Michael Walsh and his wife, Patsy, of Caseville, Beth Kraft and her husband, Tim, of Roscommon, Vicki Lomba of Bay City, Patrick Walsh and his wife, Pam, of St. Johns, and Brian Walsh and his wife, Kelli, of Pigeon; 14 great-grandchildren, Jeff, Jami, Jennifer, Scott, Jayne, Jason, Kim, Joe, Jessica, Jacklyn, Ben, Carolyn, Nick, and Daniel; three great-great grandchildren, Jeffrey, Joel, and Emalee; two sisters, Frieda Leyrer of Bay City and Anna Damm of Pigeon; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers, William, Henry, Fred, and Emil; and three sisters, Lizzie Elftman, Emma Cain, and Hilda Trost. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at Cross Lutheran Church in Pigeon with the Rev. Joseph Wold officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Gross, 89, of Port Austin died Saturday, March 23, 2002, at Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. He was born July 15, 1912, in Toledo, Ohio to Robert Abbey and Helen Goldie (Roath) Gross. He married Catherine "Kate" E. Wallace Feb. 26, 1938, in Bowling Green, Ohio. She died July 13, 1996. James graduated from the University of Toledo in 1933 with a Bachelors degree in business. He played football on the college team. He began work for Swift and Co. of Chicago out of their Saginaw office as a salesman with a route through the Thumb. James bought the Gross & Meier Meat Market in 1941 with Fred Meier. He operated the store for 33 years. Mr. Gross was the last living charter member of the Cass City Gravel Club. He served eight years on the Cass City School Board and the Cass City Village Council. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the former Cass City Hospital. He was a member of Cass City First Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder, deacon, choir member and on the pulpit committee. Mr. Gross served on the Cass City Development Group that was responsible for bringing Walbro to town. In his early years, Mr. Gross enjoyed woodworking, ceramics, rug hooking, decoupage and other crafts. He loved fishing, boating, playing bridge, watching birds and tending to his flowers. He was shuffleboard champion at his home in Florida. James is survived by his children, Barbara Kube and her husband, Dr. Kenneth S., of Bad Axe, Carolyn Hall and her husband, Dennis, of Cazenovia, NY, and Virginia "Ginnie" Bullock and her husband, Donald, of Decker; grandchildren, Kimberly Herrington and her husband, Michael, Brian Kube and special friend, Kelly Champagne, Elizabeth Angelastro and her husband, Robert, Leslyn Hall and husband, Jacques Bailly, Laurie Ganzberg and her husband, Vince, Kristin Fuller and her husband, Jeff, and Lynette Waligora and her husband, Matt; 14 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Beva Wallace of Cass City; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death was his sister, Lucille Hardy. The funeral service took place at 11 a.m. today, March 25, 2002, at Kranz Funeral Home in Cass City with pastor Larry VanSlambrook of Open Door Missionary Church in Sandusky officiating. Kuhl, 85, passed away Saturday, March 23, 2002. He was the beloved husband of Isobel O. Kuhl; dear father of Kathleen Stone and her husband, Doug, Christine Kuhl, Patrick Kuhl, Margaret Giroux and her husband, Mark, Susan Vosburgh and her husband, Andrew; dear grandfather of Ruth, Frances, Anne, Patrick, David, James, Mary Margaret, Michael and Kathryn; dear brother of Lloyd and his wife, Belva, Alberta Cagle, Wilhma Beyer, Doris Quick, Willard and his wife, Lorraine, Sylvia Wheeling and her husband, Douglas. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael, and three brothers, Harry, Bernhardt and Bruce. Funeral services will take place at noon today, March 25, 2002, at the First Congregational Church of Royal Oak. There will also be a second service at noon on Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at the Kilmanagh United Methodist Church in Kilmanagh. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service today in Royal Oak and from 10 a.m. Tuesday until the time of service in Kilmanagh at the church. Maitland, 78, of Port Austin and formerly of Roseville, passed away Friday, March 22, 2002, at his residence in Port Austin. He was born Dec. 4, 1923, in East Detroit. He was a retired sheet metal worker and was a member of the Sheet Metal Workers Union Local No. 80 and Cpl. Neil Reid VFW Post #2358 of Roseville. He was a World War II Marine Corps. veteran. Surviving include his spouse, Betty J. Maitland; two sons, Norman Maitland and his wife, Mary, of Clinton Township and William Maitland and his wife, Cindy, of Marysville; four grandchildren, Shelly Wandzel and her husband, Derek, Scott Maitland and his wife, Amy, Todd Maitland and his wife, Jennifer, and Stacy Maitland; one great-grandchild, Mariah Maitland; and one sister, Eileen Mayhew of Roseville. Tuesday, March 26, 2002 Edward Iseler Edward Carl Iseler, 89, of Bad Axe died Sunday, March 24, 2002, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Saginaw following a lingering illness. Mr. Iseler was born on Oct. 23, 1912, in Bloomfield Township near Kinde, son of the late Karl Charles and Emma Christina (Engel) Iseler. He and Elinor M. Elliott were united in marriage on March 25, 1939, at St. John's Parsonage in Port Hope. The couple resided in Bloomfield Township until 1943 when they moved to Verona Township. Edward attended Redman Country School. He was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Bad Axe serving as an usher for many years. Edward worked as a milk hauler. He also was a farmer for 20 1/2 years until his retirement in 1995. Edward enjoyed spending time with family and friends, hunting and playing cards. He also was a Detroit Tigers baseball fan. Surviving are his wife, Elinor; four daughters, Shirley Wydra and her husband, Joseph, of Frankenmuth, Linda Longuski and her husband, Jerome, of Bad Axe, Beverly Greyerbiehl and her husband, Michael, of Bad Axe, and Darlene Moore and her husband, Keith, of Hemlock; one son, Gene Iseler and his wife, Sandy, of Bad Axe; one brother, Herbert Iseler and his wife, Esther, of Peck; 19 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Edward was preceded in death by a son, Curtis Iseler; seven sisters, Alma Sliney, Lydia Bartz, Agnes Ender, Gertrude Detgan, Minna Witherspoon, Clara Iseler and Matilda Wick; and two brothers, Frederick Iseler and Leland Iseler. Wednesday, March 27, 2002 - None Thursday, March 28, 2002 Betty Gardner Betty Gardner, 53, of Elkton died Wednesday morning, March 27, 2002, at Scheurer Hospital following a long illness. She was born Aug. 18, 1948, in Pigeon to the late Herbert and Kathryn (Keatts) Beck. Betty grew up in Pigeon and was a 1966 graduate of Laker High School. She worked in Cass City for a time until her marriage to Richard "Rick" Gardner. They were married at Salem United Methodist Church in Pigeon on Sept. 17, 1971. They made their home in Elkton where she raised two sons and babysat for numerous other children from around town. After the children had grown, she worked as a waitress, first at the Lunch Bucket and later at Tiny's on the west end of town. She also worked at the Big Wheel store in Bad Axe for a while. Betty enjoyed her life at home with her boys. She was very good with a needle and thread, making crafts and baskets and doing things around the house. She was a member of the Elkton United Methodist Church, Club 59 and a charter member of the Elkton Jaycettes. Surviving are her husband, Rick; two sons, Jason Gardner and his wife, Jodi, of Midland and Scott Gardner of Essexville; and her granddaughter, Caleigh. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Mattie; and her sister, Karen Walker. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, March 29, 2002, at the Elkton United Methodist Church. The Rev. Pete Crawford, pastor, will officiate with burial in Riverside Cemetery in Elkton. Nemitz, 100, of Harbor Beach passed away Tuesday, March 26, 2002, in the Harbor Beach Community Hospital Long Term Care Unit. Born Aug. 6, 1901, in Sand Beach, he was the son of the late August and Amelia (Mausolf) Nemitz. He and Mathilda Gerstenschlager were united in marriage on Sept. 24, 1924, in Harbor Beach. Mathilda preceded Walter in death on May 12, 1998. Walter was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Harbor Beach. He loved to farm. Walter is survived by two sons, Earl Nemitz and his wife, Patricia, of St. Clair Shores and Norman Nemitz and his wife, Ruth, of Maple City; two daughters, Evelyn Zick of Harbor Beach and Betty Penn and her husband, Terrell, of Dryden; one daughter-in-law, Shirley Nemitz of Sterling Heights; 23 grandchildren; and 54 great-grandchildren. Walter was preceded in death by two sons, Ronald and Melvin Nemitz; one daughter, Esther Nemitz; two brothers, Alfred and Arnold Nemitz; a half-brother, Leo Leese; and a half-sister, Ella Hess. Scott Harder Scott Dean Harder, 45, of Bay Port passed away on Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, March 29, 2002, at the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. this evening and 9 a.m. until the time of services Friday at the funeral home. Friday, March 29, 2002 Edward Koneczny Edward F. Koneczny, 89, former Lake Township clerk, died Wednesday morning, March 27, 2002, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Saginaw. He was born Nov. 5, 1912, in Ziesing, W.V., and moved to Hamtramck at the age of 3 with his parents, the late Frank and Julia (Smizenski) Koneczny. On Nov. 28, 1936, he was united in marriage to Irene S. Witkowski at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Detroit. Eddie was employed at Chrysler Corp. for 38 years, retiring in 1971. That same year they moved to Lake Township. He was elected Lake Township clerk in 1974 and served in that position until 1998, when he did not seek re-election. He was a very active member of St. Roch Catholic Church in Caseville, the Caseville Eagles, Caseville REACT Club and a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Irene; his son, Edward Koneczny and his wife, Geraldine, of Oscoda; five grandchildren, Matt, Marylyn, Mitchell, Edward and Douglas; and eight great-grandchildren, Justin, Lucas, Lindsay, Joseph, Kelsey, Lauren, Edward and Michael. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Michelle; a great-grandson, Michael; and two sisters, Genevieve Frankowski and Emily Madej. A funeral mass will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, April 1, 2002, at St. Roch Catholic Church in Caseville. Fr. Kenneth Yaroch, pastor, will officiate with burial in the church cemetery.
