Sunday, November 24, 2002 John Gage John "Chet" Gage, 66, of Bad Axe died Sunday, Nov. 16, 2002, at Courtney Manor after a long illness. He was born on July 12, 1936 in Bad Axe, the son of the late John W. and Anna (Vesich) Gage. Chet was a graduate of Bad Axe High School. He played football for the Hatchets and was an avid Bad Axe football fan. Surviving are three sons, John Gage and his wife, Kristina of Arlington, Texas, Eric Gage and his wife, Danette, of Georgetown, Texas and Kevin Gage and his wife, Amy McLaughlin of Portage; one daughter, Kellie Garrett of Arlington, Texas; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four sisters, Goldie Robinson and her husband, Orin, Nellie Parr, Helen Mitchell and Linda Fladzinski and her husband, John, all of Bad Axe. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Andrea Gage; two brothers, Robert and Theodore Gage. Private cremation services were directed through the H.W. Weitenberner Funeral Home in Bad Axe. Victoria Longuski Victoria Longuski, 92, of Ubly passed away on Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility following an extended illness. She was born on July 3, 1910 in Paris Township, the daughter of Paul and Martha (Gatza) Warchock. She was united in marriage to Leo Longuski on June 9, 1928 at St. John's Catholic Church in Ubly. They farmed together in Bingham Township for 48 years. He preceded her in death on Oct. 24, 1976. She attended St. Mary's Catholic School in Parisville and the Kelly Bingham Rural School in Ubly. She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church for 85 years and a member of the Christian Mothers St. Monica's Circle No. 2. She was a past member of the Huron County Farm Bureau and Huron County Extension Homemakers. She moved to Ubly in 1977 and was a member of the Bingham Township election board for many years. Vicki was an excellent cook and enjoyed quilting, sewing, crocheting and playing cards. She is survived by three sons, Lawrence of Ubly, Jerome and his wife, Arlene, of Ubly and Marvin and his wife, Mary Anna of Peck; two daughters, Beatrice Rutkowski of Carleton and Gertrude Pawlowski Fudala and her husband, Chester, of Troy; a daughter-in-law, Mary Jane Longuski of Ubly; one sister, Irene Rudy and her husband, William, of Cass City; one brother-in-law, Elmer Susalla of Harbor Beach; 19 grandchildren: John Rutkowski and his wife, JoAnn, Mary Alice Bonde and her husband, Bob, Mark Rutkowski, Joy Rutkowski, Julie Robideau, Stephen Pawlowski and his wife, Kathy, Cheryl Braun, James Pawlowski and his wife, Shanna, Eugene Longuski, Karen Maurer and her husband, David, Kathy Kirsch and her husband, Michael, Shelly Messing and her husband, Gregory, Earl J. There will be Christian Mother's rosary at 4:30 p.m. today and a parish vigil service at 7:30 tonight at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly. John Shpilia John "Scout" Shpilia, 86, of Caseville died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at his home while under hospice care. He was born on March 6, 1916 at the home of his parents, the late Peter and Katherine (Lysak) Shpilia in Detroit. After high school, John worked at the Aluminum Company of America in Detroit for several years before becoming a firefighter for the city of Detroit. He retired as a battalion chief in 1976 after 34 years of service. He was then employed at Detroit Osteopathic Hospital for five years. In late 1980, he retired again and moved permanently to his cottage in Lake Township, which he began building in 1962. He was a member of St. Roch Catholic Church in Caseville, the Caseville Eagles Club and served as Lake Township zoning administrator for several years. John enjoyed the shoreline of Caseville by fishing from his boat in the summer and on the ice in the winter. He is survived by his wife, Mary; daughter, Marlene Sharples of Caseville; four grandchildren, Laura Scott and her husband, Jeff, of Memphis, Lloyd Cox and his wife, Janet, of Redford, Kevin Sharples and his wife, Michelle, of Pinckney and Britney and her husband, Jason, of Taylor; seven great-grandchildren, Keli, Holli, Leah, Haley, Ashley, Ryan and Brett. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, at Kranz Funeral Home in Cass City with Sr. Ruth Adamites of St. Michael Church in Wilmot officiating. Agnes Milligan Agnes Milligan, 93, of Cass City died Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, in Huron County Medical Care Facility. Tuesday, November 26, 2002 Julius Laba Julius Sylvester Laba, 64, of Bad Axe died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, at Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe. He was born May 8, 1938 in Bad Axe to the late Albert Kula and the late Agnes Laba. He was united in marriage to Stella Landenberg on May 12, 1956. Julius enjoyed the outdoors and visiting with family and friends. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles post 3690 in Caseville. He was a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus Post 11432. He is survived by his wife, Stella; stepfather, Xavier Palach; two sons, Jeffrey Laba and his wife, Loretta, of Bad Axe, Alvin Laba and his wife, Brenda, of El Paso, Texas; three daughters, Stella Marie Pawloski and her husband, Dennis, of Harbor Beach, Julia Boyce and her husband, Steve, of Midland, Tammy Laba of Midland; four brothers, Clem Palach and his friend, Nattie Wilson, of Wilson, Virgil Palach of Ubly, Robert Kula and his wife, Debbie, of Norwood, La., Wayne Kula and his wife, Beverly, of Kalkaska; three sisters, Genevive Kondziolka and her husband, Stanley, of Warren, Christine Jaworski and her husband, Edward, of Filion, Josephine Kleiner and her husband, Jerry, of Warren; 16 grandchildren; one great- granddaughter. Dorothy Rogers Dorothy (McGuire) Rogers, 84, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, in her home in Sault Ste. Marie after a long illness. She was born on Jan. 24, 1918 in Port Crescent, daughter of Frank and Annie (Ahearn) McGuire. Dorothy graduated from Port Austin High School in 1938. She married Jack Rogers in 1939 in Chicago. He preceded her in death on March 24, 1982. Dorothy was a registered nurse. She is survived by one son, Jack Rogers of Sault St. Marie; one daughter, Kelly Ann Rogers of Garden City; one grandson, Matthew; twin sister, Doris McGuire of Port Austin; sister-in-law, Carolyn McGuire; three nephews; one niece; one great-nephew; four great-nieces; and two great- great nieces. She was preceded in death by a brother, James "Mickey" McGuire. Services will be at 1 p.m. today in Sault St. Marie funeral home. Burial will be at 3 p.m. on Friday in the Port Austin Township Cemetery. Elsie Richardson Elsie M. Richardson, 82, passed away on Nov. 25, 2002. She was born in Kinde on June 7, 1920, daughter of the late Richard and Margaret E. (Thompson) Schrom. She graduated from Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan with a teaching certificate. She was a school teacher for 32 years in the Tyre and Ubly school systems including McIntire and Wadsworth Country Schools. She retired from the Ubly school system. She was a special reading teacher in the outlying Ubly School District and was a private tutor. She was elected three times Past Worthy Matron of the Ubly Eastern Star. She was the beloved wife of the late Elmer Branda, the late Charles "Zeke" Scott and the late Clifford "Pete" Richardson; dear mother of Janice Allen and many step-children; sister of Jessie E. Helm and her husband, Clarence, and Lois B. Curl and her husband, Thomas, and the late William Schrom. She is also survived by several grandchildren including Hailey, Marsha, Amy and Kelly Lohr, Jerrad and Shannon Dulz and Laura and Brad Osentoski. She enjoyed quilting, knitting, crocheting, tatting and loved to travel. She was a resident of Bad Axe before moving to Plymouth, Michigan where she passed away. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, at Cherry Hill United Methodist, 321 S. Ridge Rd., Canton, MI, south of Cherry Hill. Frank Sharrah Frank "Smokey" Sharrah, 85, formerly of Kinde, died Sunday morning, Nov. 24, 2002, at Courtney Manor Nursing Home in Bad Axe. He was born Dec. 14, 1916 in Kansas City, Kansas. He married Mildona "Millie" Bouvrette on Aug. 5, 1946. She preceded him in death in 1978. Frank and his wife owned Millie and Smokey's Restaurant in the late 1940s and early 1950s. He was a carpenter at Caseville Lumber, worked at North Huron Schools, and was the town constable and department of public works supervisor in Kinde for several years. Frank helped to organize the Kinde Fire Department in 1953. He served in the United States Army from 1942 to 1945. He is survived by his sister, Xepha R. Mnor of Colorado Springs, Colo.; three sisters-in-law, Becky Bouvrette, Hannah Bouvrette, Lena Baument; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today at the Gage Chapel MacAlpine Funeral Home in Kinde. Burial will be at St. Edward's Cemetery in Kinde. Wednesday, November 27, 2002 Helen Banek Helen Cottick Banek, 83, of Bad Axe, beloved wife of Tony, died unexpectedly Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, at Saginaw St. Mary's Hospital after an apparent heart attack. She was born Sept. 3, 1919 in New York, N.Y., daughter of the late Nikslaj and Wena Zalozezky. Helen and Michael Cottick were married in 1942. He preceded her in death in 1967. She married Tony Banek in April of 1969 at St. Felix Catholic Church in Pinnebog. Helen was a parishioner at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. She loved singing, dancing and garage sales. Surviving are her husband, Tony; two sons, Mike Cottick and his wife, Jean, of Bad Axe, Stanley Cottick of Pigeon; two daughters, Mary Ann Gajewski and her husband, Leonard, of Romeo, Beth Bouverette and her husband, Jerome, of Bad Axe; four grandchildren, Andrea Drouillard and her husband, Chris, of Bloomfield Hills, Laura Gajewski of Grand Rapids, Michael Cottick and his wife, Susan, of Chicago, Matthew Cottick and his wife, Loren, of Chicago; two great-grandchildren, Calyn Drouillard and Sarah Cottick; one brother; one sister; and one sister-in-law, Helen Banek of Bad Axe. Norene Krug Norene Viola (Frantz) Krug, 82, of Ubly passed away on Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, at the Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe. Norene was born on May 13, 1920 in Ubly to the late William and Elizabeth (Johnson) Frantz. She married Captain Henry S. Krug in 1943 in Detroit. He preceded her in death on May 7, 1983. Norene was a graduate of Ubly High School. She worked as a bookkeeper for Pepsi-Cola in Detroit. She moved back to Ubly in 1946. She worked for Ubly Motor Service Ford Dealership in Ubly for ten years. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ubly since 1946. She was a member of Rolling Hills Golf Club of Cass City, and an honorary member of the Ubly Community Club. She bowled for the Thumb Electric Team for many years. She enjoyed reading, golfing, cards, baking, sewing and traveling world wide. Norene is survived by one son, Edward J. Krug and his wife, Dianne, of Port Austin; one daughter, Sheryl Horetski and her husband, Gerald, of Kinde; two brothers, Willis "Barney" Frantz of Youngstown, Ohio, Dr. Douglas Frantz and his wife, Arlene, of Traverse City; two sisters-in-law, Delores Frantz of Florida, Ruth Frantz of California; three grandchildren, Kristopher Krug and his wife, Angela, of Mt. Clemens, Scott Horetski of Filion, Todd Horetski of Kinde; two great-grandchildren, Sydney and Scott Krug of Mt. Bernard Lesoski Bernard "Ben" Lesoski, 81, of Gagetown passed away Tuesday morning, Nov. 26, 2002. He was born in Port Austin on Aug. 20, 1921, the son of Carl and Lucille (Prill) Lesoski. On May 12, 1942, he married Rosella M. Balacz in Pontiac. She preceded him in death on April 10, 1984. Bernard was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Caro and the Dom Polski Club. He was employed with the Budd Wheel Company of Detroit from 1942 until 1943, and then with Wallace Stone Plant of Bay Port where he was a loader, driver, drill operator, and locomotive operator, retiring in 1985. He then operated a Mobile gasoline station and a 24-hour wrecker service in Gagetown. He enjoyed hauling scrap iron, playing bingo, polka music and festivals, game shows, and Lawrence Welk reruns. He is survived by 11 children, Betty Lesosky and her husband, Gary, of St. Helen, Josephine Rivard and her husband, David, of Elkton, Richard Lesoski and his wife, Nancy, of Cass City, Genevieve Burkett and her husband, Robert, of Kinde, David Lesoski and his wife, Mary, of Pigeon, Donald Lesoski and his wife, Louann, of Caro, Virginia Ziehm and her husband, Larry, of Gagetown, Nancy Ligrow and her husband, Merritt, of Kinde, Robert Lesoski and his wife, Kathy, of Bay Port, Ronald Lesoski and his wife, Ruth, of Gagetown, and Patricia Hurren and her husband, Don, of Pigeon; 53 grandchildren; 68 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; special friend and companion of 17 years, Helen Kolacz. Richardson, 77, of Harbor Beach passed away Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, in the Huron County Medical Care Facility following a long illness. Born in Harbor Beach on Aug. 25, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Darrell and Helen (Hagedon) True. On May 4, 1946, Barbara True and Burton Richardson were united in marriage in Farmington. Burton preceded her in death on May 15, 1992. Barb was a graduate of the Harper Hospital Nursing School and was a registered nurse. She was a retired employee of the Harbor Beach Community Hospital after 40 years of service. Barb had a unique zest for life and enjoyed her work, family and friends. She could always find the humor in every situation. She is survived by her sons, Scott Richardson and his wife, Tonie, of Santa Rose, Calif., Jeffrey Richardson of Saginaw; six grandchildren; one great- grandchild; two sisters, Joan Abbe of West Chester, Ohio and Carol Schmidt of Pickford. Barb was preceded in death by a son, Bradley Richardson in 1999; and a sister, Janet Duering. Thursday, November 28, 2002 - Thanksgiving Friday, November 29, 2002 Yvonne Allen Yvonne T. Allen, 51, of Swartz Creek died on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at her residence. She was born on May 7, 1951 in Harbor Beach and was a resident of Swartz Creek since 1987. She married John Allen on April 27, 1974 in Ruth. Yvonne was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church. Mrs. Allen was employed as a School Teacher at Holy Redeemer for three years and prior to that, she was a principal at St. Mary's in Swartz Creek. She is survived by her husband, John; two sons, Matthew and his wife, Carolyn, Christopher; mother, Theresa Volmering; nine brothers and sisters, Jan and her husband, Mel Morrell, Don Volmering, Mary Lou Pawlowski and her husband Roy, Joan Dodd and her husband, Chuck, Louise Morell and her husband, John, Dan Volmering and his wife, LaDonna, Dave Volmering and his wife, Linda, Carolyn Andrews and her husband, Bill, Robert Volmering and his wife, Tammy; sister-in-law, Janet Volmering; and many nieces and nephews. Janette Ferguson Janette Loraine Ferguson, 70, of Marlette died on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, in Covenant Cooper in Saginaw. She was born on Jan. 18, 1932 to Paul and Mary (Poirier) Lobb in Detroit. She married Dugald Ferguson on July 28, 1954 in Wyandotte. He preceded her in death on May 31, 2000. Janette attended the St. Columbkille Catholic Church. She was involved in church activities. She liked to read, play bingo and loved animals. Janette loved spending time with her grandchildren. Janette is survived by her daughters, Celine M. William Gehring William John Gehring, 83, of Bay Port and formerly of the Detroit area passed away Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at Scenic AFC Home in Pigeon. Mr. Gehring worked in the automotive industry from 1944 to 1975 with Borg Warner. He enjoyed fishing, watching baseball, bowling and reading the Detroit Free Press and was known for his sense of humor. Karr, 63, of Cass City died suddenly on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, in Covenant Cooper in Saginaw. She was born on March 20, 1939 to Robert and Maxine (Gary) Sutton in Royal Oak. She married Clayton R. Karr on Jan. 14, 1962 in Cass City. Helen did babysitting in her home. She bowled on the Charmont Women's Bowling League for many years. She enjoyed watching hummingbirds. Helen loved to read and visit with family and friends on the telephone. Helen is survived by her husband, Clayton; children, Brian Thompson and his wife, Cindy, of Commerce, Diane McIntosh and her husband, Lorn, of Decker, Rhonda Hartel and her husband, Scott, of Argyle; step- daughter, Debra Licea of Marlette; 13 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; brothers and sisters, Dorothy, Darlene, Carol, David, Ted, Sherry and Judy; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, Dennis Karr; brother, Robert Sutton. Eileen Lamb Eileen W. Lamb, 81, passed away Tuesday evening, Nov. 26, 2002. She was born Oct. 25, 1921 in Royal Oak and lived in the Detroit area for most of her life before moving to western Michigan 4 years ago. She was employed as a home economics teacher and a substitute teacher in Detroit and suburban area. She was known for her love of bridge playing, her sense of humor, and her religious enthusiasm for her former parish in Grosse Pointe Woods, Our Lady Star of the Sea, and her current parish, St. Francis deSales Catholic Church in Muskegon. The former Eileen Walsh was married to Woodrow L. Lamb who preceded her in death on Aug. 2, 1978. Eileen is survived by four children, Clare Closz and her husband, David, of Norton Shores, Monica Mignoni of Ubly, Joseph Lamb and his wife, Shari, of Littleton, Colo., David Lamb and his wife, Mary, of Hong Kong; 15 grandchildren, Michael, Sean, Brendan, and Rory Closz, Eileen, Casey, Samuel, and Peter Mignoni, Erin, Megan, Ryan, and Shannon Lamb, Eneka, Alicia, and John Lamb; four sisters, Rosemary Clinton of Livonia, Winifred Tait of Romeo, Marjorie Ziegler of Florida, Rita Dobbs of San Diego, Calif.; sister-in-law, Diane Walsh of Davison; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Winifred (O'Mara) Walsh; daughter, Kathleen Qualls; three brothers, Michael "Mickey", Robert, and Edward Walsh. Mellendorf, 86, of Bad Axe formerly of Owendale, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. She was born in the Owendale, Brookfield Township area, on Feb. 3, 1916, the daughter of the late Charles A. and Shirley F. (Chisholm) Ross. On Nov. 20, 1937, she was united in marriage to Edward F. Mellendorf in Owendale. He preceded her in death on July 19, 1986. Mrs. Mellendorf was a homemaker throughout her lifetime. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Huronia Chapter 81 in Bad Axe. While she was a member of the Owendale United Methodist Church, she taught Sunday School for many years. She was currently a member of the Bad Axe First United Methodist Church. She is survived by a son, Leland R. Mellendorf and his wife, Betty, of Grandville; three daughters, Carolyn Harvey and her husband, Gary, of Armada, Linda Mellendorf of Caseville, and Fronda Janik and her husband, Peter, of Bad Axe; ten grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; two nieces, Elizabeth Garascia and Brenda Niebel; and a sister-in-law, Jean Mellendorf of Owendale. She was preceded in death by two grandsons, Jonas and Justin Ashmore; and a step- grandson, David Janik.
