Albrecht, 71, of Bay Port died unexpectedly Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002, at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon. He was born on Nov. 28, 1930, in Bay Port, son of the late Mose and Mary E. (Gunden) Albrecht. He was united in marriage to Roxanna Harder on March 23, 1991, in Bay Port. Melvin was a farmer in the Bay Port area for many years before retiring in 1992. He was a member of the Pigeon River Mennonite Church and also attended the Bay Port United Methodist Church. He was a member in the church choir and enjoyed bowling, golfing and was an avid fast pitch softball player. Surviving are his wife, Roxanna of Bay Port; step-children, Kurt Grigg and his wife, Teresa, of Coggin, Iowa; Jodi Grigg of Dillon, S.C., Melissa Parrish and her husband, Troy, of Gagetown, Jamie Grigg of Pigeon; eight step grandchildren; one sister, Doris Albrecht; two brothers, John Albrecht and his wife, Betty, all of Pigeon; Lyle Albrecht and his wife, Alice, of Bay Port; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one infant brother and one infant sister. The funeral service will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at the Bay Port United Methodist Church. the Rev. Alan DeGraw, pastor of the Bay Port United Methodist Church and the Rev. Luke Yoder, pastor of the Pigeon River Mennonite Church will officiate with burial in the Pigeon River Mennonite Cemetery near Pigeon. Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today at the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing. He will lie in state at the church from 9 a.m. on Monday until the time of service. Apolonio Avalos Sr. Apolonio Antonio "Paul" Avalos Sr., 81, of Pigeon passed away on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002 at Scheurer Hospital Long Term Care Unit after a long illness. He was born in Hebbronville, Texas on March 10, 1921, the son of the late Antonio and Anita (Leal) Avalos. On Oct. 5, 1947, he was united in marriage to Ella Cantu in Hebbronville. Mr. Avalos was a factory worker and farm worker in the Pigeon area for many years. He enjoyed woodworking, playing billiards and especially being with his family. He attended Salem United Methodist Church in Pigeon and was a member of the Pigeon V.F.W. Post #2236. He is survived by his wife, Ella, of Pigeon; eight children, Mary Guardian and her husband, Armando, Jesse Avalos and his wife, Mary, Mary Schulze and her husband, Gene, Joe Avalos and his wife, Sylvia, Joel Avalos and his wife, Lisa, Esther Hill and her husband, Jeff, and Raul Avalos, all of Pigeon and Juan Avalos of Gagetown; 18 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Josephine Garcia of Texas; a brother, Bernardo Avalos and his wife, Andrea, of Georgia; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Juanita; a son, Chino; two brothers, Manuel and Porfidio; two sisters, Maria and Sophia. Memorial contributions may be made to the family. Albertine Glidden Albertine "Al" Glidden, 95, of Sand Point passed away on Friday, Oct. 25, 2002, at Scheurer Long Term Care Unit in Pigeon. She was born on Oct. 19, 1907, in Chicago, the daughter of the late Herman and Zerline (Benjamin) Kleinschmidt. On Sept. 10, 1932, she was united in marriage to Benjamin Frank Glidden in Marrietta, Ohio. He preceded her in death on Nov. 28, 1971. Mr. and Mrs. Glidden established the Caseville IGA grocery store in the early 1960s and operated the Bay Port Store and the Owendale Grocery for many years. She was a homemaker and loved being with her family. She was a charter member of the Order of the Eastern Star Mera Chapter of Prairie Village, Kan. and was a member of Scenic Golf and Country Club in Pigeon for many years. Mrs. Glidden was a former member of the Old Mission Methodist Church in Kansas City, Kan. and a current member of the Caseville United Methodist Church. She is survived by a son, Richard Glidden and his wife, Takeko, of Owendale; a daughter, Diane Watson and her husband, John, of Sand Point; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home, a Golden Rule funeral home, in Pigeon with the Rev. "Mickey" Philippart, 75, of Redford died on Oct. 23, 2002, at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. He was born on Aug. 20, 1927, in Detroit. Howard was an Attorney at Law. He retired from the Wayne County Prosecutors Office in 1994. He was previously employed as the Redford Township Magistrate and Garden City Magistrate. He graduated from the University of Detroit Law School in 1952. Howard was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Cardinal Mooney Chapter, Michigan Bar Association, Veterans Affairs, Downriver Irish American Club, American Legion, "Choir Boys," Wayne County Detectives Association, Ancient Order of Hibernians. He served in the U.S. Navy. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Betty; beloved father of Michelle Stirrett and her husband, Keith, Mary Beth Shimshock, Howard "Mike," and his wife, Maribeth, Timothy, Matthew and his wife, Paula, Lisa Simonds, and Rosemary Whalen and her husband, Gerald. 23 grandchildren; sisters, Janet, Nancy and Kay. Smith, 74, of Deford died on Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002, in Tendercare Nursing Facility. Funeral services took place at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at Kranz Funeral Home in Cass City with Pastor J.T. Mabe of Mizpah Missionary Church officiating. Interment was in Roderfield, W.Va. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association or the American Heart Association. Monday, October 28, 2002 Don Bennett Don G. Bennett, 76, of Sand Point died Sunday morning, Oct. 27, 2002, at Bay Medical Center in Bay City. He was born May 2, 1926, in Lansing to the late William and Bessie (Crumb) Bennett. Don was inducted in to the U.S. Navy in 1943, serving in the South Pacific during World War II. When he returned, he went back to school and received a degree in engineering from Michigan State University. On Oct. 29, 1971, he was united in marriage to Elsie (Friebe) DeShano in Bay City. In 1989, he retired from Gerace Construction in Midland and moved from Freeland to the home on Sand Point he began building in 1982. He was a member of St. Roch Catholic Church in Caseville, Knights of Columbus 3rd and 4th degree, Caseville-Pigeon, Caseville Kiwanis Club. He was a former Caseville Township clerk, served on the Caseville Township Planning Commission and was instrumental in starting the Point of Sand Point Association. Don enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, and snow and water skiing. He is survived by his wife, Elsie; ten children, Ken DeShano and his wife, Debbie, of Poulsbo, Wash., Cathy Johnson and her husband, Tony, of Tucson, Ariz., Randy DeShano of Auburn, Rhonda Roth and her husband, Daniel, of Linwood, Brian DeShano and his wife, DeAun, of Edenville, John Bennett and his wife, Debbie, of Grand Blanc, Tim Bennett, Patrick Bennett and his wife, Tammy, of Tulsa, Okla., Daniel Bennett and his wife, Marie, of Belton, Texas, Jennifer Fagan and her husband, Kelly, of Jeddo; 19 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and his brother, William Bennett of Indianapolis, Ind. Forbing, 85, of Bloomfield Township, Port Hope, passed away Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at home under Hospice Care. He was born on April 25, 1917, in Standish to the late William and Emma (Cunningham) Forbing. He and Irene Perdue were married Oct. 10, 1936, in Bad Axe. She preceded him in death on Feb. 1, 1982. He then married Mary Armstead on Aug. 6, 1983, in Harbor Beach. Seymour was a member of Our Lady Of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach. He retired from farming in 1980 and retired from the Port Hope Elevator in 1982. He is survived by his wife, Mary, of Port Hope; four daughters, Neva Finkbeiner of Sebewaing, Emma Goyette and her husband, Thomas, of Mo., Barbara Peck and her husband, Jack, of Pigeon, June Jackson of Midland; seven sons, Seymour E. Clarence Williams Clarence R. Williams, 80, of Bad Axe died Friday, Oct. 25, 2002, at Courtney Manor Nursing Center in Bad Axe. He was born Jan. 4, 1922, in Hume Township near Kinde to the late Ray and Myrtle E. (Cummings) Williams. Clarence attended Country School in Hume Township. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a Purple Heart recipient. Mr. Williams was employed in Detroit at Chrysler Corporation and at Vernors Bottling Company. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and was a Detroit Tiger's baseball fan. He is survived by two sons, Clarence R. Williams, Jr. and his wife, Lucy, of St. Augustine, Fla., Charles C. Williams and his wife, Michelle, of St. Augustine, Fla.; two daughters, Janet H. White of Jacksonville, Fla., Madeleine J. Rose Winter Rose D. Winter, 78, of Sebewaing, died unexpectedly Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002, at her home. She was born Dec. 6, 1923, in Pigeon, daughter of the late Michael and Pauline (Reher) Schmidt. She was united in marriage to Edgar P. Winter on March 30, 1946, in Sebewaing. He preceded her in death on Sept. 19, 2000. Rose was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Mary Martha Guild and also was a former member of the Sebewaing American Legion Auxiliary, Post No. 293. She is survived by three sons, Terry Winter and his wife, Pam, Dennis Winter and his wife, Judy, of Charlevoix, and Ronald D. Winter of Houston, Texas; two daughters, Janice K. Brown and her husband, Dan, of Deford, and Gail M. Wilson and her husband, Al, of Sebewaing; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three sisters, Caroline Miller of Lake Okeechobee, Fla., Margaret Hamilton of Lapeer, Nancy Gainor and her husband, Gene, of Bad Axe; two brothers, Frank Schmidt and his wife, Evelyn, of Sebewaing, Dale Schmidt and his wife, Lorraine, of Flint; and several nieces and nephews. Charles and Nevah Woodruff Charles Blaine Woodruff, 65, and Nevah Fern Woodruff, 63, of Cass City, died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, in an automobile accident in Tuscola County. Charles was born March 1, 1937, at home in Genesee County to Jasper Blaine and Mary Elizabeth (Murphy) Woodruff. Nevah was born Dec. 5, 1938, in Flint to Edwin Wilber and Ruby Viola (Van Arsdale) Nash. They were married March 10, 1956, in Genesee County. Charles worked as an auto body repairman at various collision shops near Flint and later owned and operated Woodruff's Collision. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing cards and joking and teasing with his grandchildren. Nevah worked as a tax preparer for many years from her home. She was a beloved member of Mizpah Missionary Church serving as a board member and deaconess. Nevah enjoyed writing poetry and singing with her grandchildren on her lap, but most of all she had an inexpressible love for her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Over the years she enjoyed gardening and canning, including making jams, jellies, and pickles. Nevah put everyone else first. She was grandma to many. She always had a beautiful smile and a hug for everyone. Charles and Nevah are survived by their ten children, Lena Waltz and her husband, John, of Deford, Charles Woodruff II and his wife, Kelly, of Cass City, Gerald Woodruff and his wife, Cindy, of Cass City, Stanley Woodruff and his wife, Julie, of Gagetown, Robert Woodruff of Cass City, Ronald Woodruff and his wife, Mary, of Jackson, Shelly Hamilton and her husband, Robert, of Warren, Gregory Woodruff of Cass City, Kathleen Bouverette and her husband, Rocky, of Deford, Carrie Woodruff of Cass City; 26 grandchildren; three great grandchildren. Tuesday, October 29, 2002 Anna Ritsema Anna Edwina "Winnie" Ritsema, 102, of Northport, formerly of Naperville, Ill., and Sebewaing, passed away Thursday evening at Leelanau Memorial Health Center in Northport. Winnie was born June 28, 1900, in Peru, Ind., the daughter of Frank and Etoile (Stewart) Gillaum. On Sept. 15, 1926, in Detroit, she married Dr. John Ritsema, who preceded her in death in 1960. Winnie was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Sebewaing, a member of Trinity United Church of Christ in Northport, a member of the Eastern Star, and a former president of the Michigan Federation of Women's Clubs. She is survived by her two daughters, Patricia Sobehrad and her husband, Jerry, of Northport and Rosemary Zimmerman and her husband, Dale, of Naperville, Ill.; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Winnie was also preceded in death by her son, John. Funeral services were held at the Trinity United Church of Christ in Northport on Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Gehrs, 83, of Frankenmuth died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at Covenant Medical Center-Cooper. He was born on Sept. 18, 1919, in Elk Grove Village, Ill. He married Mildred A. Schalk on July 1, 1944, in Detroit. She survives him. Martin taught school at Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Chicago then moved to Frankenmuth in 1949 and served 33 years at St. Lorenz Lutheran School. He was a member of St. Lorenz Lutheran Church. He served as secretary of Branch 204 of Aid Associations for Lutherans for 30 years and was past treasurer of the Michigan Federation of AAL Branches. He served for many years as an officer of the Frankenmuth High School Alumni Association and as a member of the City of Frankenmuth Recreation Committee. He was a member of the St. Lorenz Male Choir and the Lutheran Retired Teachers Association. He was employed as a tour guide at Heilmann Brewery Co. for many years. Surviving besides his wife, Mildred A., are his children, David Gehrs and his wife, Kathy, of Frankenmuth, Michael Gehrs and his wife, Karen, of Pigeon, Barb Jewell and her husband, Daniel, of Independence, Ky.; four grandchildren, Katie and Chris Gehrs of Frankenmuth, Kari and Kristie Gehrs of Pigeon; three sisters, Margaret Thurman and her husband, Larry, Pauline Gehrs, and Ruth Flett; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers, the Rev. Gerhardt Gehrs, the Rev. Walter Gehrs, Carl Gehrs; and one sister, Gertrude Albrecht. William Osak William F. Osak, 86, of Ubly died Thursday, Oct. 10, 2002, in the Huron County Medical Care Facility of Bad Axe. William was born on Feb. 12, 1916, in Hamtramck, the son of the late Lawrence and Sophia Tarapata Osak. He married Monica Czrolo on Dec. 2, 1939, in Hamtramck. She preceded him in death on Aug. 26, 1999. Bill was a quiet, introspective and fiercely independent person who grew up during the Depression, becoming an airline mechanic. Later he became self-employed, working with his hands. He was creative in auto-body work, carpentry and later in life he joined his wife, Monica, in hair dressing in their beauty shops in Bad Axe and Ubly. Bill sought to be fair and followed the Golden Rule. Losing his wife of 59 years was a great loss to him. They loved to travel and sought the freedom to do so. Bill is survived by one son, Bill Osak and his wife, Dorothy, of Visalia, Calif.; two grandsons, Rob Osak of Visalia, Calif., and Bryan of Genoa, Italy. He has one brother, Mike Osak and his wife, Ruth, of Algonac. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, in St. John Catholic Cemetery in Ubly. The Rev. T.J. Goretski, 66, of Port Austin, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. She was born on July 25, 1936, in Wyandotte, daughter of the late Arthur and Alice (Doute) Odine. She and Marvin L. Goretski were married on May 5, 1962, at St. Pius X in Southgate. Catherine was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin where she was also a member of the Holy Rosary and Bible Study Group. She was also a member of Right to Life and a CCD teacher. Catherine was a Teacher's Aid for twenty years until retiring in 1996. Catherine is survived by her husband, Marvin of Port Austin; her children, Mary Theresa Mangliers and her husband, Robert, of Clawson, Mary Ellen Goretski of Madison Heights, Thad Goretski of Boling Book, Ill., Patrick Goretski of Bay City, Mark Goretski of Birch Run, and Mary Beth Goretski of Waterford; three grandchildren, Kim, Ben, and Cindy; one brother, Joseph Odine and his wife, Janet, of Wyandotte; two sisters, Barbara Borth and her husband, David, of Big Rapids and Mary Zoerman and her husband, Lyle, of Holland. Anastasia Schwanitz Anastasia Schwanitz, 95, of Nutley, New Jersey and formerly of Port Austin, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, at the home of her daughter in Nutley. She was born on Dec. 28, 1906, in Chandler Township, daughter of the late Bernard and Mary (Hoffner) Reilly. She married William Schwanitz who preceded her in death in 1976. Anastasia was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin, the Blessed Virgin Mary Sodality, and the Priscilla Club of Port Austin. Anastasia is survived by two sons, Edward W. Schwanitz of Albuquerque, N.M., Gerald R. Schwanitz of Livonia; one daughter, Mary Ann Chagnon of Nutley, N.J.; 14 grandchildren; and 22 great- grandchildren. Linda Walsh Linda Mary (Reinelt) Walsh, 52, of Linden and formerly of Argyle, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, at University Hospitals of Ann Arbor. She was born Aug. 21, 1950, in Cass City, daughter of the late Gerald and Helen (Kroetsch) Reinelt. She was a graduate of Deckerville High School. She loved painting, lighthouses, making quilts, gardening, NASCAR and the wind through her hair on the back of a Harley. She was a member of A.B.A.T.E. for two years. She is survived by her son, Jeff Walsh of Argyle; her daughter, Valerie Walsh and her husband, John Watkins, of Commerce; two sisters, Diane Best of Sandusky, Nancy Reinelt of Argyle; one brother, Robert Reinelt and his wife, Lou Ann, of Argyle; one grandson, Shawn Green of Snover; one granddaughter, Ashli Watkins of Commerce; stepchildren, Bryan, Jeffery, and Jayme Park; and many nieces and nephews. Watchowski, 46, beloved husband, father, brother and son, passed away Sunday, Aug. 27, 2002. Adalbert Joseph Chandonnet, C.R.s.R., 78, passed away on Oct. 16, 2002. "Fr. Chan" was born on Dec. 4, 1923, in Detroit. He was a beloved brother, priest and former pastor of Holy Ghost Catholic Church. He professed religious vows as a member of the congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, known as the Redemptorist's on Aug. 2, 1945, and was ordained a Roman Catholic priest on June 29, 1950. He served the church for more than 50 years. He was stationed mainly throughout Texas and Louisiana, serving in San Antonio, Corpus Christi, New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Amarillo, and most often in Houston at Holy Ghost Church where he served a total of 31 years. The parish feels especially blessed to have known and enjoyed his friendship and loving service. He is survived by his brother, Robert Chandonnet and his wife, Sylvia; sister, Carol Sorrentino and her husband, Tony; several nieces and nephews, Suzan Mann and her husband, Ron, Marilyn Kalmar and her husband, Frank, Julie Psujek and her husband Jerry, Rob Chandonnet and his wife, Joely, and Tony Sorrentino. Matilda Huestis Matilda Marie "Peggy" Huestis, 106, of Bad Axe passed away Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, at Sunny Acres Nursing Home in Bad Axe. She was born in Madison, Wis. on March 9, 1896, daughter of the late Albert and Augusta (Reinke) Siewert. In 1937 she was married to Robert B. Huestis, who preceded her in death on Jan. 12, 1951. Mrs. Huestis was the last surviving widow of a Spanish-American War veteran in Michigan. Mrs. Huestis enjoyed physical exercise and caring for her yard and home, as well as entertaining and playing cards. She was a member of the Huronia Chapter No. 51 Order of the Eastern Star since moving to Bad Axe in 1965, and in 1986 she was honored as a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She attended the First Presbyterian Church in Bad Axe. She is survived by a sister, Edith Sparks of Clio; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by six brothers and four sisters. The Order of the Eastern Star will conduct a service at 3 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, at the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home, Pigeon. The memorial service will follow at 3:30 p.m. with the Rev. Jan Dykshoorn, pastor of Bad Axe First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Interment of the cremated remains will take place at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Omaha, Neb. Dale Jamieson Dale Jamieson, 79, of Owendale died Thursday evening, Oct. 31, 2002, at his home following a 3-month illness. He was born on Sept. 13, 1923, in Grant Township, son of the late Alex and Inger (Roberts) Jamieson. He was united in marriage to Barbara A. Edler on July 31, 1948, in Linkville. Dale along with his brothers owned and operated Jamieson Brothers Tiling Co. for many years serving the Thumb before retiring in 1984. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Linkville. He served in the Pacific during World War II. He enjoyed and collected antique cars. Surviving are his wife, Barbara, of Owendale; two daughters, Linda Roe and her husband, Jim, of Gagetown, Joanne Rinke and her husband, John, of Fenton; two sons, Larry Jamieson of Arlington, Va., David Jamieson and his wife, Mary, of Owendale; nine grandchildren; two sisters, Lois Benson of Detroit, Irene Goyette of Rock Hill, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one infant sister, Evelyn Jamieson; and two brothers, Lee and Robert Jamieson. The funeral service will take place at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 3, 2002, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Linkville. The Rev. Lee Wenskay will officiate with burial in the Grant Twp.
