Local obituaries for the week beginning April 28, 2002 Sunday, April 28, 2002 Frank Butler Frank Butler, 80, of Cass City died Friday, April 26, 2002, in his home after a long illness. He was born May 25, 1921, to Elmer and Ida (Beach) Butler on the same farm that he lived his whole life. He married Adeline Holzwart on Nov. 14, 1942 in her parent's home in Unionville. Frank's farm was his life, and he cared for it with the same zeal that he applied to his family and his church. His farming career spanned from horse drawn equipment to his favorite Oliver tractors. Frank loved the land and its wildlife, he greatly enjoyed hunting and sporting events and yet never failed to turn aside for a Killdeer's nest while working a field. Frank had the only Brown Swiss dairy cattle in the area. As a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church he served as congregational president, head elder, and was the last living member of the church building committee. His strong work ethic and sense of humor will be greatly missed. Frank is survived by his wife, Adeline; daughters, Bonnie Zeidler and her husband, Bill, of Cass City, Linda Voss and her husband, Ron, of Deford, Molli Hartel and her husband, Scott, of Caro, Mari Lowe and her husband, Ken, of Cass City, and Paula Butler of Ypsilanti; grandchildren, Ron Voss and his wife, Sue, Bill Zeidler Jr., Beth Rienstra and her husband, Dennis, Rachel Perkins and her husband, Chad, Brandon Hartel, and Kari, Kevin, and Kyle Lowe; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Mac Dodds and her husband, Lyle, Alice McComb and her husband, Carl, Elizabeth Guisbert and her husband, Dane, and Edith Rae and her husband, Robert; also many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kaye Frances, in 1987; and brothers Kenneth, Gerald and Paul. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, April 29, 2002 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church with The Rev. Gerald Meyer officiating. Burial is in Elkland Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Kranz Funeral Home, Cass City, and from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Monday in church. Osborn Otto, 88, of Cass City died Friday, April 26, 2002, in her home. She was born March 11, 1914, in Brookfield Township, Owendale, to George and Elizabeth (Teller) Ricker. She married C. Robert Osborn on April 22, 1933 in Fremont, Ohio. He died May 18, 1982. She married Elbert "Doc" Otto on June 11, 1983 in Cass City. He died June 13, 1994. Beryl helped her husband farm until her retirement in 1973. She was Huron County Deputy Register of Deeds for 12 years. She was a member of Cass City First Presbyterian Church, life member of Cass City Echo Chapter Order of Eastern Star #337. Beryl was organist for Owendale United Methodist Church for many years, occasionally for Cass City First Presbyterian Church, and also organist for Gifford OES Chapter #369. She enjoyed reading, working crossword puzzles, and watching wildlife, especially birds, from her home. Beryl is survived by her daughters, Gwen McLachlan and her husband, Robert Cregeur, Marilyn Peters and her husband, Anton, Norma Wallace and her husband, Richard, all of Cass City, and Nida Jean Osborn of Marysville, Mo.; her grandchildren, Robert McLachlan, Scott McLachlan and his wife, Cindy, Beatrice B. McLachlan, Cindy Peters, Sally Peters, Joann Peters, Christopher Peters and his wife, Valerie, Patrick Peters and his wife, Stephanie, Thomas Wallace and his wife, Leigh, and Stephen Wallace; her great-grandchildren, Shelby and Zachary McLachlan, Veronica and Laura Conlin, Toni, Hayley, Karley, Christopher, Eric and Megan Peters, Heather Miller, Ashley Wallace, and Mikayla Wallace; her stepson, Clarence Otto and his wife, Phyllis, of Columbus Grove, Ohio; a stepdaughter-in-law, Louise Otto of Vaughnsville, Ohio; four step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three infant children; a son-in-law, Archie McLachlan; a sister, Erma Reimer; four brothers, Harold, Vern, Arthur, and Alva Ricker; and a stepson, Dale Otto. Mark Morningstar of Sandusky Presbyterian Church will officiate with burial in Grant Township Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Cass City First Presbyterian Church Piano Fund. Monday, April 29, 2002 Marion Eichler Marion B. Eichler, 82, of Pigeon passed away on Saturday, April 27, 2002, at Huron Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. She was born on May 13, 1919, in Popple near Bad Axe on the family farm. She was the daughter of the late Frederick and Lennie (Graves) Burton. On July 27, 1959, she was united in marriage to Roland A. Eichler in Bay City. Mrs. Eichler attended and graduated from the Popple Rural School and graduated from Bad Axe High School. She graduated from Bay City Business School and worked in the Bay City office of the Boy Scouts of America for many years. More recently, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Eichler was an avid reader and enjoyed books and newspapers. A faithful member of Salem United Methodist Church in Pigeon, she was a former member of of the administrative board and at one time taught vacation bible school. She was active in the P.T.A. while her son, Burton was attending public school. She is survived by her husband, Rollie; son, Burton R. Eichler and his wife, Maria Toth Eichler, of Pigeon; sister, Inez Leitch and her husband, Archie, of Rochester; sister-in-law, Verna Wright and her husband, Nelmer, of Pigeon; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Glen Burton and his wife, Vivian; a sister, Gladys Barton and her husband, Art. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 30, 2002, at Salem United Methodist Church in Pigeon with the Rev. H. Frank VanValin officiating. Burial will be in Grand Lawn Cemetery in Pigeon. Visitation is from 12:30 to 9 p.m. today at Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home in Pigeon and 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. Memorials may be made to the Salem United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society. Maurice Taylor Maurice F. Taylor, 79, of Deford died Sunday, April 27, 2002, in Covenant Health Care Cooper in Saginaw. He was born on June 20, 1922, to Howard and Olga (Shagena) Taylor in Denton. He married Dorothy J. Klinkman on Sept. 12, 1942, in South Carolina. Maurice served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He worked as a plumber in Cass City and then as a pipe fitter before retiring from General Motors in 1969 after 20 years. Maurice was a member of Deford Community Church, Cass City VFW Post No. 3644 and the American Legion Post No. 7. He enjoyed traveling, including taking trips to Hawaii and California, fishing trips to Canada and short trips around the Thumb. Maurice enjoyed watching the freighters on the Great Lakes and enjoyed collecting models of the ships. He loved his family, especially spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a very generous man and helped his family in every way he could. Maurice is survived by his wife, Dorothy; children, John Shagena and his wife, Jeanne, of Cass City, Lynn Babich and her husband, Bernie, of Deford, Sue Linderman and her husband, Harvey, of Cass City, the Rev. Lee Taylor and his wife, Kathy, of Whitmore Lake; daughter-in-law, Suzanne Humpert of Cass City; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sister, Genevieve Sheffer and her husband, Everett, of Highpoint, N.C.; sister-in-law, Virginia Taylor of Cottonwood, Calif.; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Larry Shagena in 1970; and a brother, Howard "Joe" Taylor. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May, 1, 2002, at Deford Community Church with the Rev. David Mercer officiating. Interment is in Elkland Township Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Deford Community Church. Tuesday, April 30, 2002 Deborah Baslock Deborah E. Baslock, 87, of Bad Axe passed away on Sunday, April 28, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital in Saginaw. She was born on April 26, 1915, in Bad Axe, daughter of the late John and Louisa (Kleinfeldt) Dutzel. She married Luther William Baslock on April 2, 1937. He preceded her in death on Jan. 18, 1991. She was a member of the First Missionary Church in Bad Axe. She is survived by two sons, Ronald W. Baslock and his wife, Gayle, of Huntsville, Ala. and Richard C. Baslock and his wife, Margaret, of Ferndale; one brother, Harvey Dutzel of Climax Springs, Mo.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers, William, Leonard, Lloyd and Charles Dutzel; three sisters, Evelyn Snell, Helen Morehead and Lavina Patterson. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 1, 2002, at the Kaufman Funeral Home in Bad Axe. Officiating will be the Rev. Anthony Ferriell, pastor of the Bad Axe First Missionary Church. Burial will be in the Colfax Cemetery. Visitation is from 5 to 9 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Bad Axe First Missionary Church. Charles Buss Charles O. Buss, 69, of Bad Axe died Sunday, April 28, 2002, in his home. He was born on Dec. 16, 1932, in Hudson, Ind., son of the late Ancil and Lucile (Libey) Buss. He married Linda Klink March 11, 1956, in Hudson, Indiana. Charles served in the United States Army at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri from 1953-55. He was a graduate of Salem Center in Hudson and of Tri-State University in Angola, Indiana where he earned a bachelor of science degree in business administration. In 1964, Mr. Buss moved to Bad Axe where he was district manager for Occidental Chemical Co. serving in Bad Axe, Elkton, Applegate and Fairgrove. In 1969, he purchased Ace Hardware in Bad Axe. He served on the Bad Axe board of education. Charles was a devoted husband, father, and he was a recent grandfather. He enjoyed his many friends. He was a member of Bad Axe First Baptist Church where he served as financial secretary for many years. He was a member of the Thumb Area Antique Auto Club, also. He enjoyed making homemade ice cream for the benefit of the Octagon Barn Fall Family Days and other special events. He is survived by his wife, Linda, two sons, Bradley Buss and his wife, Ann, of Bad Axe and Patrick Buss and his wife, Susan, of Oakland, Calif.; two daughters, Linda Chumbler and her husband, Michael, of Harbor Springs and Beckie Miller and her husband, Eric, of Bad Axe; three sisters, Mildred Brand of Fort Wayne, Ind., Catherine Schmidt and her husband, Doyle, of Angola, Ind. and Ruth Holden and her husband, Carol, of Corunna, Ind.; one grandson, Eli Charles Buss; many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 1, 2002, at the First Baptist Church in Bad Axe. The Rev. Jay Barsaleau will officiate. Burial will be in Colfax Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today at the MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe and from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Wednesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bad Axe First Baptist Church, Bay Area Hospice or the American Cancer Society. Victor Kain Victor Oscar Kain, 85, of Filion died Friday, April 26, 2002, at his home where he lived since 1948. He was born Feb. 21, 1917 in Owendale, son of the late Jacob and Mary (Kuhl) Kain. He graduated from Owendale High School and farmed with his dad until he was inducted into the U.S. Army. He served from 1941 to 1946. Victor and Mildred Nelson were married June 12, 1943. They lived in New Jersey and Brooklyn, New York until he was stationed overseas. When he returned, they lived briefly in Linkville before moving to Filion. Victor was a lifelong farmer. He liked to hunt and fish. He loved his children and grandchildren and his church family. Surviving are his wife, Mildred; three sons, Richard Kain of Ubly, Gerald Kain and his wife, Mary, of Kinde and Edward Kain of Georgetown, Texas; three grandchildren, Adam, Rachel and Robert Kain; one brother, Emerson Kain. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Leslie Kain, Russell Kain and Harold Kain; three sisters, Florence Dinkel, Dorothy Heckman and Fern Diebel. A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 1, 2002, at the MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe. The Rev. Frank Van Valin will officiate. Cremation took place at Sunset Valley Crematory in Bay City. A meal at the Farm Bureau building in Bad Axe will follow the service. Memorials may be offered to Chandler Presbyterian Church, Marlette Hospice or the donor's choice. Shirley Witherspoon Shirley O. Witherspoon, 68, of Port Hope passed away Monday, April 29, 2002, in the Huron Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe following a long illness. Born on Oct. 1, 1933, in Port Hope, she was the daughter of the late Hugo and Olga (Pleiness) Eggert. Shirley and Robert Witherspoon were united in marriage on Jan. 5, 1957, in Port Hope. She enjoyed cooking for her family and her specialty was banana cake. She was a former employee of the Huron Daily Tribune. Shirley was a member of St. John Lutheran Church. Surviving are her husband, Robert Witherspoon of Port Hope; children, Susan Witherspoon of Port Hope, Dennis Witherspoon and his wife, Kim, of Midland, Terry Witherspoon of Toledo, Ohio and Peggy Mashke and her husband, Ed, of Millington; six grandchildren, Adam, Joshua and Sarah Witherspoon and Andrew, Nickolas and Amanda Mashke; two brothers, Orville Eggert and his wife, Jean, and Gary Eggert, all of Harbor Beach; sister, Elaine Eggert of Harbor Beach. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Stanley and Gordon Eggert. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday, May, 2, 2002, in St. John Lutheran Church in Port Hope with the Rev. Gregory Eilers, pastor officiating. Burial will be in the New River Cemetery in Huron City. A scripture service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Ramsey Funeral Home in Harbor Beach. Visitation is from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight, from 1 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and from noon until the time of the service Thursday at the church. Wednesday, May 1, 2002 Dorothy Sprague Dorothy Peterson Sprague, 96, died peacefully at her home in Port Austin on Friday evening, April 26, 2002. Dorothy was born May 12, 1905, in Bad Axe to the late Arthur and Bella (Scott) Dundas. She was a graduate of Bad Axe High School and obtained a master's degree from Michigan State University. She was a high school teacher and guidance counselor in several school districts in Michigan. In 1926, she married George E. Peterson who died in 1980 after 53 years of marriage. In 1981, she married Willard M. Sprague who preceded her in death in 1983. Dorothy enjoyed reading and writing poetry. She was a member of the United Protestant Church of Port Austin and the Priscilla Club. She also was very active in the Michigan State Federation of Women's Clubs. Since 1970, Dorothy spent winters in Mesa, Ariz., where she was a member of Apache Wells Community Church. She belonged to Women's Fellowship and sang in the choir. Dorothy is survived by her son, George Peterson and his wife, Joan, of San Diego, Calif.; one daughter, Lynne Peterson of Port Austin; two grandsons, George Peterson and his wife, Jennifer, of Wilton, Conn., and Scott Peterson and his wife, Donna, of San Diego; three stepsons, Gerald Sprague and his wife, Connie, of Bad Axe, Dr. Bruce Sprague and his wife, Jean, of Goodrich, and the Rev. Richard Sprague and his wife, Betty, of Tavares, Fla.; one stepdaughter, Judith Holmes of Miami, Fla.; three great-grandchildren, Robert, Michael and Kelly Peterson; seven Sprague great-grandchildren; one sister-in- law, Mae Bouck and her husband, Olin, of Cass City; one niece, Lorraine Faist and her husband, Dale, of Mesa, Ariz., formerly of Elkton; four nephews, Harvey Furness and his wife, Lois, of Indian River, David Winston of Pinnebog, Roger Bouck and his wife, Vera, of Cass City, and Ernest Bouck; and a stepsister, Hazel Furness. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Francis Winston and Muriel Gilbert; and one sister-in-law, Marion Furness. In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be conducted at a later date. Local arrangements are being handled by MacAlpine Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to the United Protestant Church in Port Austin. Thursday, May 2, 2002 Charles Johnson Charles E. Johnson, 84, of Harbor Beach near White Rock passed away Wednesday, May 1, 2002, at his home with hospice care following a long illness. Born in Osceola, Pa., on Nov. 29, 1917, he was the son of the late Oscar and Margaret Thomas. Charles was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army in Central Europe where he received two Bronze Stars. He retired from Stroh Brewing Co. in Detroit after 30 years and was a member of the American Legion Burhans-Hagedon Post No. 197 of Harbor Beach. Charles and Marjorie Hoshaw Russell were united in marriage on June 16, 1984, in Algonac. Surviving are his stepchildren, Leaman Russell and his wife, Nancy, of Sterling Heights, William Russell and his wife, Karol, of Bad Axe, Howard Russell and his wife, Gloria, of Harbor Beach, Linda Rogers of Clinton Township, Ethel Maliszewski of Madison Heights, Tillie Marrow and her husband, Martin, of Romeo, Harriet Russell of Sterling Heights, Brenda Condo of Sterling Heights and Peggy Barrow of Algonac; 17 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Mildred Santucci of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, John R. Johnson. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, May 3, 2002, in the Ramsey Funeral Home in Harbor Beach with the Rev. Clarence VanConant officiating. Burial will be in the White Rock Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 9 p.m. this evening and 10 a.m. until the time of services Friday at the funeral home. Friday, May 3, 2002 Eugene Longuski Eugene Longuski, 79, of Cass City died peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, April 30, 2002, in his home. He was born Nov. 18, 1922, to Bruno and Bernice (Braiza) Longuski in Detroit. He married Marion Winter on June 18, 1949, in the St. Columbkille Catholic Church Rectory. Eugene served in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II. He was a carpenter for 15 years, then farmed, including 30 years of growing strawberries. Eugene was a musician years ago, playing violin, banjo and guitar. He loved music, especially bluegrass. Eugene was an animal lover and especially cared about his dogs. Eugene is survived by his wife, Marion; children, Dennis Longuski and his wife, Patsy, of Cass City and Daryl Longuski and his wife, Gayle, of Sterling Heights; grandchildren Robin Longuski, Dawn Longuski, Erin Shankie and Meghan Shankie; a brother, Jerome Longuski and his wife, Linda, of Bad Axe; sisters Gladys Pickering of Bad Axe, Florence Vogler of Bloomfield Hills and Eleanor Landra and her husband, Cyril, of Homosassa, Fla.; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Marvin Winter and his wife, Janice, of Cass City; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Bruno Longuski Jr.; and brothers-in-law George Vogler and Warner "Tim" Pickering. Funeral services took place at 11 a.m. Friday, May 3, 2002, at Kranz Funeral Home in Cass City, with retired clergy, the Rev. Robert Garrett, officiating. Interment was in Elkland Township Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Sanilac County Humane Society or to the American Heart Association. Floyd Abraham Floyd F. Abraham, 88, passed away Wednesday, May 1, 2002. Floyd was born in Parisville on Oct. 17, 1913, the son of the late Bertha and Jacob Abraham. He was married to Florence Schumacher on Nov. 19, 1938 in Ruth. He grew up in Huron County where he worked as a farmer. During his lifetime he drove milk truck and worked for Michigan Peat in Minden City. He retired at the age of 70 and had lived with his son in Mikado for the past 18 years. Mr. Abraham was an honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus and an usher for SS. Peter and Paul Church in Ruth for many years. He loved gardening, weaving and cooking. He is survived by his children, Ann Marie Pawloski and her husband, Robert, of East Tawas, Charlene Stojsik and her husband, Thomas, of Greenbush, Marlene Wachoski and her husband, Martin, of Royal Oak, Rosemary DeVito and her husband, Greg, of Eastpointe, Barbara Meyer and her husband, Bruce, of East Tawas, Gary Abraham and his wife, Michele, of Harrisville, Paula Terese Booms and her husband, Nicholas, of New Berlin, Wis., and Christopher Abraham and his wife, Amy, of Greenbush; 23 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 12 great- grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and two sisters, Ruth Kaliszewski and Bebe Ann Frahm. Mr. Abraham was preceded in death by one daughter, Paula Agnes who died at 2 months of age in 1941; four brothers, Alfred, Paul, Melvin and Alger; and two sisters, Evelyn and Eugenia. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 4, 2002 at St. Anne Catholic Church in Harrisville. There will be a rosary service at 7:30 tonight at the Oscoda Chapel of the Buresh-Bennett Funeral Home, 212 River Road, in Oscoda. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home, and from 10 a.m. until the time of services Saturday at the church. A committal service will take place at 2 p.m. Monday at SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Ruth. Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Hospice or SS. Peter and Paul Church or School. Envelopes are available at the funeral home. Arthur Bergman Arthur P. Bergman, 79, of Pigeon passed away on Thursday, May 2, 2002, at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 8, 2002, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Linkville.
