Local obituaries for the week beginning March 31, 2002 Sunday, March 31, 2002 Mary Blondell Mary Blondell, 94, of Caro died Wednesday, March 27, 2002, at Caro Community Hospital. She was born on Dec. 8, 1907, in Crestline, Ohio to the late Karl and Katherine (Schmidt) Kappel. The former Mary Kappel married Steve Grasel in March of 1927. He preceded her in death on Dec. 22, 1938. She then married Martin Blondell in 1947. He preceded her in death in March of 1956. She had been employed at General Cable in Cass City. She liked to play cards, crochet, and liked everything to do with crafts. She also liked to visit, travel, and spend time with her children and grandchildren. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Caro. Mary is survived by three children and their spouses: Edna and Reuben Sjulstad, and Robert and Maryann Grasel, all of Punta Gorda, Fla., and Katherine and Robert Ricker of Owendale; 11 grandchildren and their spouses, Ken and Betty Sjulstad, Rob Sjulstad, Steve and Marcia Sjulstad, Katherine and Jeff Blank, Robert Jr. and Deb Grasel, Ann and John Krafft, Tony and Kath Grasel, Steven and Amy Grasel, Lynda and Paul Rocheleau, Jeff and Pam Ricker, and Kim and Randy Ewald; 28 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Adam and Simon Kappel; and two sisters, Helen Friesorger and Eva Frick. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 1, 2002, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Caro. Father Dennis Kucharczyk will officiate. Burial will be at St. Agatha's Catholic Cemetery in Gagetown. Visitation will take place from 4 to 9 p.m. today at the Collon Funeral Home in Caro and from 10 a.m. until the time of service Monday at the church. There will be a scripture service at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church building fund. Dorothea Detgen Dorothea E. Detgen, 69, of Port Hope passed away Thursday, March 28, 2002, at her home with hospice care after a long illness. Born in Harbor Beach, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Naomi (Essenmacher) Hurren. She and Sylvester Detgen were united in marriage Nov. 12, 1949 in Harbor Beach. Dorothea was a waitress at Al's Restaurant for 12 years and enjoyed doing quilting. She is survived by her husband, Sylvester Detgen, of Port Hope; two sons, James Detgen and his wife, Doris, of Harbor Beach, and David Detgen and his wife, Caren, of Shreveport, La.; three daughters, Linda Reid and her husband, Robert, of Harbor Beach, Bobbi Hallock and her husband, Victor, of Williamston, and Amy Rossman and her husband, David, of Warren; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; four brothers, Bill Hurren and his wife, Helen, of Sterling, Reg Hurren of Sterling, Ron Hurren and his wife, Marie, of Lawrenceburg, Tenn., and Russ Hurren of Florida; and three sisters, Lucille Breathour of Mt. Morris, Shirley Newton and her husband, Bill, of Alabama, and Anna Mae Catangara of Ft. Gratiot. Funeral services were conducted at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 30, 2002, at the Ramsey Funeral Home, Harbor Beach, with the Rev. Andrew Willis, pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial was in the New River Cemetery near Huron City. Edward Koneczny Edward F. Koneczny, 89, former Lake Township clerk, died Wednesday morning, March 27, 2002, at St. Mary's Medical Center. He was born Nov. 5, 1912, in Ziesing, W.V. and moved to Hamtramck at the age of 3 with his parents, the late Frank and Julia (Smizenski) Koneczny. On Nov. 28, 1936, he was united in marriage to Irene S. Witkowski at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Detroit. Eddie was employed at Chrysler Corp. for 38 years, retiring in 1971. That same year they moved to Lake Township. He was elected clerk in 1974 and served in that position until 1998 when he did not seek re- election. He was a very active member of St. Roch Catholic Church, Caseville, Caseville Eagles, Caseville REACT club, and a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Irene; his son, Edward Koneczny and his wife, Geraldine, of Oscoda; five grandchildren, Matt, Marylyn, Mitchell, Edward, and Douglas; and eight great-grandchildren, Justin, Lucas, Lindsay, Joseph, Kelsey, Lauren, Edward, and Michael. Preceding him in death were his granddaughter, Michelle; a great- grandson, Michael; and two sisters, Genevieve Frankowski and Emily Madej. A funeral mass will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, April 1, 2002, at St. Roch Catholic Church, Caseville. The Rev. Fr. Kenneth Yaroch, pastor, will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. An Eagles memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. and the Knights of Columbus will conduct a rosary service at 7:30 p.m. today at the Champagne Funeral Chapel, Caseville. "Radar" Luttman, 49, of Elkton died Friday, March 29, 2002 at Scheurer Hospital, Pigeon. He was born July 20, 1952 to John and Vivian Luttman in Detroit. Gary was a veteran of the US Air Force and had been stationed at the Port Austin Air Base serving in the 754 Airborne. He moved back to the area in 1975 after he was discharged from the service. Gary became a machine repairman at Active Industries in 1977, retiring in 2000 for health reasons. On Dec. 3, 1993, he was united in marriage to Linda McBride in Bad Axe. He enjoyed the stock car races at Owendale Speedway and also loved to tease, especially his family. Surviving are his wife, Linda; five sons, Dennis Luttman of Bad Axe, David and James Luttman of Port Austin, and Tim and Josh McBride of Elkton; his daughter, Jenny Luttman of Port Austin; three grandchildren, Dustin, Madison, and Josie; his parents, John and Vivian Luttman of Oceanside, Calif.; and three brothers, Jim Luttman and his wife, Mary, of Capac, Bob Luttman and his wife, Sigrid, of Fenton, and Ron Luttman and his wife, Jan, of South Lyon. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 2, 2002, at the Champagne Funeral Chapel in Elkton. The Rev. Fr. Joseph Schabel will officiate with burial in St. Felix Catholic Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Scheurer Hospital. James Howitt James Brian Howitt, 55, of Cass City died Wednesday, March 27, 2002 in Covenant Health Care Cooper Campus, Saginaw. Monday, April 01, 2002 Dorothy Helewski Dorothy C. Helewski, 85, of Port Huron Township passed away Sunday, March 31, 2002, in Mercy Hospital in Port Huron. She was born to Alex and Katherine Fisher on Nov. 30, 1916, in Grindstone City and married William "Bill" Helewski on August 11, 1951, in Port Huron. He died on Jan. 26, 1986. Dorothy was employed at Huron-St. Clair Mfg. until her retirement in 1979. She was a member of St. Stephen Catholic Church, enjoyed gardening, flowers and cooking and always had a good sense of humor. Her family was most important to her, especially her grandchildren. She is survived by six children, Eleanor Abbotts, Colorado Springs, Colo., Stan Kosloski and his wife, Eileen, of Chesterland, Ohio, Eileen Drouillard and her husband, Harvey, of Fort Gratiot Township, Randy Hewelski and friend, Debbie Curtis, of Fort Gratiot Township, Karen Sherman and her husband, Dennis, of Port Huron Township and Susan Piotter and her friend, Paul Carolan, of Port Huron; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; six brothers and sisters; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two grandchildren and six other brothers and sisters. The funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 3, 2002, in St. Stephen Catholic Church in Port Huron. The Rev. Fr. David Lesniak, pastor of St. Stephen Catholic Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery. A scriptural wake service will take place 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St., Port Huron. Tuesday, April 2, 2002 Dennis Lemanski Dennis Lemanski, 48, of North Carolina and formerly of Parisville, passed away Friday, March 29, 2002 in Greenville Hospital of South Carolina. He was born Jan. 28, 1954 in Parisville to the late Alfred and Evelyn (Glaza) Lemanski. He never married. Dennis was a graduate of the Ubly High School. He received a bachelor's degree in criminology from the University of North Carolina, Charlotte. He was a member of the American Legion in North Carolina and member of the Knights of Columbus of North Carolina. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 10. He was a veteran of the Air Force, serving during Vietnam Conflict. He as a member of the North Carolina National Guard Association, the Air Force Association, the Air Force Sergeants Association and the Enlisted Association of the National Guard of the United States (E.A.N.G.U.S.) He was active in the Air National Guard in Baden, North Carolina. He was a member of the St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church of Statesville, North Carolina. Dennis is survived by his one brother, Ronald Lemanski and his wife, Linda, of Mauldin, S.C.; four sisters, Mary Ann Wrubel and her husband, Kenneth, of Minden City, Arlene Schultz and her husband, Edward, of Otisville, Rita Osentoski and her husband, Jim, of Ubly, Lorraine Barnes and her husband, James "Butch", of Imlay City; step-father, George Lemanski of Bad Axe; many nieces and nephews; two aunts, Theresa Glaza and Agnes White; two uncles Elmer Glaza and Art Lemanski. Funeral mass for Dennis will take place at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, April 4, 2002, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Parisville. The Rev. Steve Gavit, pastor of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church of Ruth will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery with graveside military honors by the Ubly Veterans Organization. There will be a vigil service at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Zinger- Smigielski Funeral Home of Ubly. Visitation will be from 1 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Betty Luttermoser Betty J. Luttermoser, 77, passed away Sunday, March 31, 2002, at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe. She was born on May 10, 1924, in Detroit to the late Donald and Pauline (Trybon) Bement. Betty and Ralph Luttermoser were united in marriage on Sept. 6, 1947, in Detroit. He preceded her in death on April 11, 1999. Mrs. Luttermoser resided in Kinde for the past seven years. Prior to that, she was a resident of Taylor for 40 years. She was a member of t St. Pascal's Catholic Church in Taylor and very active with the Holy Rosary Sodality. Betty enjoyed crocheting and visiting with family and friends, especially her grandchildren. Betty is survived by four sons, Ralph Luttermoser Jr. and his wife, Barbara, of Flushing, NY, Ronald Luttermoser and his wife, Frances, of Napolean, Jeffrey Luttermoser of Kinde, and Donald Luttermoser of Johnson City, Tenn.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at noon on Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at MacAlpine Funeral Home-gage Chapel in Kinde with Sr. Judy O'Brien officiating. Burial will be at New River Cemetery in Port Hope. Visitation is from 9 a.m. until noon Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made offered to the family discretionary fund. Norbert Polk Norbert E. Polk, 73, of Kinde passed away Monday, April 1, 2002, at the Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe. He was born on Sept. 18, 1928, in Verona, son of the late Thomas and Clara (Longuski) Polk. He and Johanna Baranski were married on May 6, 1950, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin. Norbert was a very active member of the Knights of Columbus in Bad Axe where he was a member of the fourth degree color corp as well as a past Grand Knight. He was also a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin and of the Ubly Fox Hunters. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed playing cards, bingo, and working at the fish fry events at the Knights of Columbus Hall. Norbert also sailed the Great Lakes as a wheelsman for the Columbia shipping line. He is survived by his wife, Johanna; six children, Theodore Polk and his wife, Carol, of Filion, Theresa Rumsey and her husband, Russ, of Smiths Creek, Anthony Polk and his wife, Barbara, of Akron, Timothy Polk of Ruth, and Tamara Schulze and her husband, Thomas, of Pigeon; eight grandchildren, Garrett and Brenda Polk, Amy Hess, Renee Acree and her husband, Curtis, Dylan Polk, Tonikay Polk, and Michael and Michelle Schulze; one brother, Thomas Polk and his wife, Pat, of Bad Axe; three sisters, Virginia Onufrak and her husband, William, of St. Clair Shores, Velma DeWitt and her husband, Robert, of Arkansas, and Violet Vertin of Clawson; and one sister-in- law, Evelyn Miller and her husband, Al, of Ubly. He was preceded in death by an infant granddaughter; six brothers, Orville, Harvey, Stanley, Alton, Donald and James; and three sisters, Verla, Vivian and Evelyn Ann. Fuester, 98, of Cass City passed away Easter Sunday, March 31, 2002, at Tendercare Nursing Facility in Cass City. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at Kranz Funeral Home in Cass City with Dr. Philip Rice of Cass City United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Elkland Township Cemetery in Cass City. Visitation is from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the charity of the donor's choice. Wednesday, April 3, 2002 – None Thursday, April 4, 2002 Delmar Hinton Delmar G. Hinton, 84, of Bay Port, passed away Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital in Saginaw. He was born in Winsor Township on Sept. 3, 1917, son of the late Olin and Laura Francis (Fritz) Hinton. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Augusta Fluegge in Defiance, Ohio on August 16, 1941. She preceded him in death on Oct. 2, 1993. Along with his wife, Dorothy, Mr. Hinton owned and operated the Scenic Bar for 44 and a half years, retiring in 1992. He was a former member of the Michigan Licensed Beverage Association and the Bay Port Chamber of Commerce. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping. He was a former member of the Pigeon Conservation Club. He was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church in Berne. He is survived by a step-sister, Diane Mason of Detroit; a step-brother, Edward Sharkey of Florida; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Mohr and her husband, George, and Eleanor Weiss, all of Pigeon; a brother-in-law, John Weiss and his wife, Norma, of Clinton Township; caregivers and friends, Richard and Peggy Kuhl of Bay Port; several cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 6, 2002, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Berne with the Rev. James A. Gorsegner, pastor officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation is from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home in Pigeon and from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Saturday at the church. Memorials for Mr. Hinton may be made to the American Heart Association or the St. John's Lutheran Church lift fund. Dorothy Kennedy Dorothy A. Kennedy, 85, of Bad Axe, passed away on Wednesday April 3, 2002, at Huron Medical Center following a long illness. She was born on Sept. 27, 1916, in Columbus, Ohio, daughter of the late Harry and Clara (Price) Derr. She married Albert Wayne Kennedy on April 3, 1949 in the manse of the Bad Axe First Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Kennedy enjoyed crocheting. She was a member of the Bad Axe First Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her husband, Albert Wayne Kennedy of Bad Axe; daughter, Gale Kennedy of Clarkston; son Alan Kennedy and his wife, Meredith, of Novi; five grandchildren, Patricia Altadonna and her husband, Joe, of Roseville, Raymond Herron and his wife, Theresa, of Warren, Alden, Adam and Erin Kennedy of Novi; two great- grandchildren, Asia and Johnathan Herron of Warren. A memorial service for Mrs. Kennedy will be conducted at a later date. Interment will be in Colfax Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are by Kaufman Funeral Home in Bad Axe.
