Fleming, longtime Pinnebog resident, died Friday afternoon, October 31, 2003, at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon. She was born in Port Hope at the home of her parents, the late William and Sarah (Cowie) Varney, in the early 1900s. After high school and a year of college she returned to the area. On August 27, 1928, she was united in marriage to Charles J. Fleming in Bowling Green, Ohio. They made their home at the south limits of Pinnebog where they farmed all their married life. Charlie preceded her in death on July 14, 1970. Mildred was a life-long member of the Chandler Presbyterian Church, life member of the Order of Eastern Star, past member of the Pinnebog Women's Club and Pinnebog Bridge Club. She enjoyed playing cards, working around the house and yard, and taking care of her family. Surviving are her daughter, Judy Lesock, of Caseville; nine grandchildren, Jane, Patty, Bill, Judy, Tracey, Dan, Todd, Stephanie and Jim; 16 great-grandchildren, Tara, Rochelle, Stephanie, L.J., Charlie, Jim, Jaime, Chancey, Joey, Angel, Ryan, Alex, Patrick, Liam, Lauren and Quinn; and six great-great grandchildren, Brody, Kylie, Drew, Lindsey, Skye and Ryan. Preceding her in death were: a son, James Fleming, and her brother, Clifford Varney. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. on Monday, November 3, 2003, at the Champagne Funeral Chapel of Caseville. Rev. Doug Mater will officiate with burial in Colfax Township Cemetery. Visitation in Caseville will be from 2-9 p.m. today, and after 10 a.m. on Monday. Memorials may be given to the Huron County Nature Center. Donna Hessler Donna Jean Hessler, 76, of Sebewaing, died Thursday morning, October 30, 2003, at her home following a three-month illness. She was born December 15, 1926 in Sebewaing, daughter of the late August M. and Hilda (Huebner) Weisenberg. She was united in marriage to Carl Milton Hessler, Jr. on July 31, 1947 in Saginaw. He preceded her in death in 1957. Donna was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Sebewaing. Surviving are one son, Timothy Hessler and his wife, Jennifer, of Bancroft; two daughters, Trina Barnum, of Perry and Kathy Esther and her husband, Russell, of Grand Rapids; three grandchildren, Aimee, Trisha and Donna Jean; two great-grandchildren, Mackenzie and Madison; also one sister, Luella Utich, of Sterling Heights; one sister-in- law, Hazel Weisenberg, of Sebewaing; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Teresa Hessler; one granddaughter, Meggin Hessler; three brothers, Raymond, Maurice and Russell Weisenberg; three sisters, Ruby Smith, Doris Painter and Isabelle Westerlund. As per the family's wishes, there will be no visitation at the funeral home. Cremation has taken place at Sunset Valley Crematory in Bay City. A memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 8, 2003, at Dinkel- Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing. Fr. John Weis will officiate with inurnment to take place at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Unionville. Jean Mellendorf Jean I. Mellendorf, 67, of Owendale, died Thursday morning, October 30, 2003, at Crittenton Hospital in Rochester Hills. She was born September 15, 1936 in Bad Axe to the late Stanley Seely and Bonnie (Loucks) Seely. Jean Seely married Milton K. Mellendorf on April 26, 1958. He preceded her in death on April 23, 1975. Jean enjoyed spending time with her granddaughter, visiting garage sales, drinking ice tea, cooking and attending family gatherings. She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Garascia and her husband, Michael, of Lake Orion; one granddaughter, Tricia Anderson, of Lake Orion; her mother, Bonnie Fritz, of Owendale; three sisters, Maxine Becker and her husband, Robert, of Owendale, Bonnie Vennevy, of Owendale, Arvilla Hobson and her husband, Colin, of Marlette; two brothers, Elmer Schram, of Sandusky, Alfred Schram, of Caseville; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Mrs. Mellendorf was preceded in death by seven brothers, Ilo Seely, Roy Schram, Jr., Earl Schram, Carl Schram, Ervin Schram, Arthur Schram, Nelson Schram; two sisters, Joyce Isaac, Delores Schram; one brother-in-law, Edward Mellendorf; and one sister-in-law, Thelma Mellendorf. Bradley Talaski Dubs Bradley Thomas Talaski Dubs, 22, of Kinde, died Thursday, October 30, 2003, in Huron Township. He was born April 4, 1981 in Bad Axe, son of Anthony and Lori (Talaski) Dubs. Bradley was a member of Grindstone Sportsman's Club in Port Hope. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, playing euchre and pool, and spending time with his friends. He is survived by his parents; two brothers, Zachary Dubs, of Northville, Jeramie Dubs, of Northville; one sister, Stazy Rutkowski and her husband, Faron, of Utica; and his grandparents, Elmer and Darlene Talaski, of Rapson, and William and Valeria Dubs, of Port Hope. Mildred Thompson Mildred "Midge" Irene Thompson, 92, of Cass City, died Friday, October 31, 2003, in Huron County Medical Care Facility of Bad Axe. Arrangements are being handled by Kranz Funeral Home of Cass City. Monday, November 03, 2003 Cleo Cain Cleo M. Cain, 86, of Pigeon (Caseville Township), passed away Friday, October 31, 2003, at the Huron Medical Care Facility, Bad Axe. She was born in Calumet on May 19, 1917, the daughter of the late Peter and Christina (Vollmer) Jaerling. On October 12, 1940, she was united in marriage to William M. Cain in Detroit. He preceded her in death on February 24, 1966. Mrs. Cain was a homemaker, and worked at Corbishleys and Kritzmons in Bad Axe after 1966. She enjoyed reading, crocheting and knitting, but in her younger days she enjoyed all sports, especially swimming. She was a member of the Caseville United Methodist Church. She is survived by two daughters, Carol Diener and her husband, Dennis, and Sharon Mohr and her husband, Dieter, of Pigeon; five grandchildren, Dennis Diener and his wife, Patricia, Lori Rathje and her husband, John, Michael Mohr and his wife, Amy, Mark Mohr and his wife, Jennifer, and Michelle Mohr and her special friend, Brad; seven great-grandchildren, Jenilee Rathje, Joshua Rathje, Zachary Diener, Kailey Mohr, Megan Mohr, Emily Diener, and Madison Mohr; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, William M. Cain, Jr. in 1970; one brother; and five sisters. Tuesday, November 4, 2003 David Swanson David Arnold Swanson, 57, died Wednesday, October 29, 2003, in Grand Rapids after a short illness. David was born May 1, 1946 in Huron County. David's father was Carl Arthur Swanson, originally of Crystal Falls, who had a dentistry practice in Ubly, in the 1940s and 1950s. His mother was Grace Swanson, originally of Port Austin. They had six children, Paul, Frederick "Fritz", Eric, David, Carl and Ann. David's father, Carl Arthur "Doc" Swanson died in 1953 of a heart attack, and his mother, Grace, and four of his siblings, Paul, Fritz, Carl and Ann, died in 1954 in an auto accident while driving in Huron County. From 1954 David and Eric were raised in Port Huron with their uncle and aunt, Carl and Nan Schwedler, along with their three sons, Rick, Pat, and Carl. David was an altar server at St. Edward's and St. Mary's Parishes in Port Huron, and graduated from Port Huron High School in 1964. He broke his neck that summer in a diving accident. David received an associates degree from St. Clair County Community College in Port Huron in 1967, and attended Wayne State University in Detroit, graduating in 1969 with a bachelor's degree in political science. He received a law degree in 1972 from Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. From the late 1970s to recent years, David practiced law in Benton Harbor, with his uncle, Thomas Robinson, and his cousin, Jim Ford, in the law firm of Robinson, Ford and Swanson. He lately resided with his cousin, Stan Slavin and his wife, Nancy, in Benton Harbor. He was a member of the Berrien County and Michigan Bar Associations. David was an active member of the St. Bernard's Parish of Benton Harbor, where he participated in the Crusillo movement, taught Catechism and was a member of the Benton Harbor Council of the Knights of Columbus. David had a lifetime avocation for birding, and was a supporter of Sarett Nature Center in Benton Township. In the last couple of years, he was a resident of the Michigan Assisted Breathing Center in Grand Rapids. David's remaining brother, Eric, preceded him in death in 1965. His Aunt Nan Schwedler preceded him in death in 1972. Pat Schwedler preceded him in death in 1985, and his Uncle Carl Schwedler preceded him in death in 1993. David is survived by Rick Schwedler and his wife, Jean, of Port Huron, and their two children, Barbara Greaux, of Port Huron and Julie Schwedler, currently residing in Tennessee; Debbie Ladensack and Pat's two children, Sarah and Amy, all of Port Huron; Carl Schwedler and his wife, Marcia Berry, of Davis, California, and their four children, Lena, Grace, Catherine and Luke; Stan and Nancy Slavin, of Benton Harbor and their children, Elaine Slavin, residing in South Carolina, Charles and Louis, of Kalamazoo; and Raymond and Norah of Benton Harbor; his aunts and uncles, Chuck Ehlen, of Chicago, Tida and Bob Finan, of Port Austin, Ann Schwedler, of Port Austin, Susan Schwedler, of Bay City, Margaret Howard, of Benton Harbor, Bill Robinson, of Detroit, John and Betty Robinson, of St. Joseph, Gert Preble, of Fremont, Tom and Audrey Robinson, of South Haven, Dorothy and Joe Ludlum, and Sally and Dick Tucker, of Allegan; numerous cousins and dear friends throughout the state of Michigan and beyond, including his close friend, Jean Domer, of Sawyer. Watson, 85, of Ubly, passed away Monday morning, November 3, 2003, at Tendercare of Cass City. Florence was born on June 28, 1918 in Cass City to the late Charles "Frank" and Theresa (Patrick) Decker. She married Joseph L. Watson on August 2, 1958 at St. Pancratius Catholic Church in Cass City. He preceded her in death on August 18, 1982. Florence was born in Greenleaf Township and was a graduate of the Greenleaf Country School. She farmed with her family and husband. She was a member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church of Freiburg since 1958 and was a member of the Altar Society. She enjoyed quilting, traveling, cards, and gardening. Florence is survived by one sister, Sister Marie Decker O.P., of Adrian; two brothers, Arthur Decker and his wife, Betty, of Cass City, Francis Decker and his wife, Patricia, of Caro. Wednesday, November 05, 2003 Thomas Czewski Thomas Leo Czewski, 68, of Ubly, passed away Sunday, November 2, 2003, at Huron Medical Center of Bad Axe after a long illness. Tom was born on October 9, 1935 in Ubly to Leo and the late Agnes (Heleski) Czewski. Tom attended Ubly Community Schools. He was employed by the Great Lakes Shipping Co. He served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1959. He was a lifelong member of the Operating Engineers Local No. 324 in Livonia. Memorials requested to the Family Discretionary Fund. Charles Fox Charles P. Fox, 48, died unexpectedly on Monday, November 3, 2003, at his home. He was born January 6, 1955 in Mt. Clemens, son of George and Barbara (Willing) Fox. He was united in marriage to Marceline Fox on November 24, 1989 in Bay Port. Charles had been employed as a carpenter for Leo Hien Construction of Goodells for the past 30 years. He was a hunter and fisherman and was active with Ducks Unlimited. He truly enjoyed and adored his children, grandchildren and also taking his dogs for a ride to the lake. Surviving are his wife, Marceline (Marcy) Fox of Sebewaing; two sons and one daughter, Paul Fox and his wife, Anna, of Clawson, Lisa Hagadorn and her husband, Dan, and Charles Fox, all of Gaylord; one step-daughter, Connie and Michael Derdowski, of Saginaw, one step-son, Dale Herman and his wife, Angie, of Unionville; eight grandchildren; and his parents, George and Barbara Fox, of Armada; one sister, Cathy Wood and her husband, Gary, of Frankfort; two brothers, Daniel Fox and his wife, Linda, of Armada, and Donald Fox and his wife, Jeanie, of Memphis; three brothers-in-law, Brian Stock, of Sebewaing, Ralph Henne, of Lansing, DeVere Henne and his wife, Annette, of Pigeon; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Memorials may be made to the Family Discretionary Fund. Fabian Lemanski Fabian S. Lemanski, 89, a lifelong resident of Harbor Beach, went home to the Lord on Tuesday, November 4, 2003, at Courtney Manor of Bad Axe. He was a resident there for nine months. Fabian was born May 10, 1914 in Harbor Beach, son of Frank and Agnes (Pawlowski) Lemanski. He and Leona Peyerk were married September 4, 1938, at St. Joseph Catholic Church of Rapson. They lived on North Finkle Road after they were married. They purchased their farm in 1942 in Sigel Township and have lived there ever since. Fabian was a dairy and crop farmer his entire life. He was a lifetime member of Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach and a school board member for Cooper School. He was also a member of the Michigan Milk Producers Association. When he was 21, he traveled to the Dizzy Dean Baseball Camp in Hot Springs, Arkansas. He tried out for the Detroit Tigers as a pitcher. Because he developed a sore pitching arm, that career never materialized. He played baseball for many years for the Halfway Baseball Club Team as a pitcher, catcher and first baseman. Fabian loved his family. He loved baseball, Polish and country music, and playing cards, especially euchre. Fabian is survived by his wife of 65 years, Leona, of Harbor Beach; four daughters, Virginia Gentner and her husband, Richard, of Royal Oak, Shirley Guza, of Ubly, Marjorie Booms and her husband, Dan, of Harbor Beach, Betty Durr and her husband, Carl, of Bad Axe; one son, Randy Lemanski and his wife, Sue, of Harbor Beach; 23 grandchildren, Carol (Tom) Septer, Jayme (Tom) Halter, Perry (Karen) Gentner, Jeff (Jeanne) Gentner, Steve (Sandi) Guza, Mary Jo (Larry) Roggenbuck, Dan (Paula) Guza, Deb (Matt) Knarian, Terry (Jean) Guza, Jeanne (Andy) Guza, Jr., Sally Hazel, Gary (Terra) Booms, Scott (Shelly) Booms, Rick Booms, Sandy Booms, Michael Lemanski, Jodi (Kevin) Holdwick, Jason Lemanski, Russell "Rusty" Lemanski, Ryan Lemanski, Robin, Kelly, and Brandon Durr; and 44 great-grandchildren. Thursday, November 6, 2003 Genevieve Marks Genevieve Marks, 59, resident of Kinde, died at her home Wednesday afternoon, November 5, 2003. She was born on July 31, 1944 in Huron County, daughter of the late John and Kathleen (Bruce) Itchue. Genevieve was a member of St. Edward Catholic Church in Kinde. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, dancing, and visiting with family and friends. She is survived by four daughters, Susan (Marks) Buschlen, of Fraser, Delilah Marks, of Clinton Township, Katie Marks, of Kinde, Julie Marks, of Sault Ste. Marie; two granddaughters, Lauren and Taylor Buschlen; four sisters, Rene Haldane and her husband, James, of Warren, Mary Symons and her husband, Roland, of Bad Axe, Catherine Zablocki and her husband, Jerome, of Clinton Township, Helen Itchue, of Fraser; and many nieces and nephews. Amelia Oberin Amelia "Amy" Hebert Oberin, 96, of Saginaw and former resident of Bad Axe, died Tuesday, November 4, 2003, at St. Francis Home in Saginaw. She was born October 4, 1907 in Pinnebog, daughter of the late John Jr. and Harriet (Mousseau) Hebert. Miss Hebert married Walter H. Oberin on September 3, 1936 at St. Felix Catholic Church in Hewelton. Walter preceded his wife in death on October 27, 1976. Mrs. Oberin was a former member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Marlette and Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe, where she assisted with religious education for many years. Amelia is survived by one son, Fred Oberin and his wife, Barbara, of Los Angeles, California; three daughters, Janice Kasdorf and her husband, Jack, of Marlette, Carole Oberin, of Saginaw, Sherry Baron, of Saginaw; one sister, Berneice Castlen; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. Mary Collier Mary M. Collier, 89, of Sebewaing, died Wednesday, November 5, 2003, at her home. The funeral service will take place at 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 8, 2003, at the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing. Burial will be in Hickory Island Cemetery near Wisner. Friday, November 07, 2003 Lawrence Geiger Lawrence F. Geiger, 61, of Harbor Beach, passed away Monday, November 3, 2003, at the home of his daughter in Alpena. Born in Harbor Beach on December 26, 1941, he was the son of the late George and Selma (Lorkowski) Geiger. On September 14, 1963, he was united in marriage to Dora Treiber in Germany. She preceded him in death on January 21, 1975. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in Germany. Larry is survived by his five daughters, Brenda Burgess, of Radcliff, Kentucky, Denise Couillard and her husband, David, of Alpena, Angela Frakes and her husband, Mickey, of Elizabethtown, Kentucky, Nicole Hunter and her husband, Edward, of Gilbert, Arizona, and Shannon Gray, of Mesa, Arizona; 12 grandchildren; two brothers, James Geiger and his wife, Linda, of Harbor Beach, Daniel Geiger, of Harbor Beach; four sisters, Jean Talaski and her husband, LaVern, of Harbor Beach, Arlene Cook and her husband, Tom, of Ruth, Cheryl Halifax and her husband, Gary, of Harbor Beach, and Barbara Burkhard and her husband, Randy, of Saginaw. Family and friends will gather at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Helena on Monday, November 10, 2003, at 10 a.m. for a service with Fr. Andrzej Boroch, pastor, officiating. Interment will take place in the church cemetery. Cremation has taken place at Autumn Valley Crematory in Gaylord. Ramsey Funeral Home, Harbor Beach, is handling arrangements. Memorials may be given to the family discretionary fund. Jauregui Josianne Jauregui Josianne (nee ARNOLD), 76, passed away Saturday, November 1, 2003. Mrs. Jauregui was a loving and caring wife and mother who also liked traveling and spending time with her family and grandchildren and friends. She was the beloved wife of Manuel; dear mother of Dorothy (George, Sr.) Ordus, Gil (Ani) Helmick and Henry (Mary) Werda; special friend of Helen Werda; dearest daughter of Gilbert and Lucille Arnold, of Brussels, Belgium; dear sister of Jeanine Arnold, of Belgium; loving grandmother of George, Jr. (Kim) Ordus, Greg (Dawn) Ordus, Joe Ordus, Vanessa Helmick, Brianna Helmick and Zoe Helmick; loving great-grandmother of Meghan Ordus and Lauren Ordus. Funeral services were conducted at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 4, 2003, at Voran Funeral Home (Allen Park Chapel), 5900 Allen Rd. Visitation was from 1 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. 1
