Sunday, March 9, 2003 George Duda George Duda, 82, died Thursday, March 6, 2003, at his home in Mt. Clemens. He was born Dec. 22, 1920 in Bad Axe to Paul and Frances (nee Balcer). He was married to Leta Maurer on June 22, 1948. He graduated from Central Michigan University and attained his master's degree at Wayne State University. He served in the U.S. Navy as Chief Specialist during World War II. He retired after 36 years from the Roseville Public Schools as an elementary school principal in 1982. He was a devoted family man and enjoyed golf and gardening at his farm in Bad Axe. He especially enjoyed and appreciated his grandchildren. He is survived by wife, Leta; children, Robert and his wife, Pamela, Paul and his wife, Janice, Michael and his wife, Carolyn, David and his wife, Kathy, Douglas and his wife, Michelle, Mary Lee Pisha and her husband, Drew, Beth Peltier and her husband, Todd; 18 grandchildren; sisters Mary Micek and Gertrude Duda. He was preceded in death by one brother, Daniel Duda and sister, Julia MacIntyre. Funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday, March 10, 2003, at St. Thecla Church at 20740 S. Nunneley Rd. in Clinton Township. A prayer service will be at 7:30 tonight at the Wujek-Calcaterra and Sons, Inc. Funeral Home, 54880 Van Dyke at 25 Mile Road in Shelby Township. Interment Resurrection. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. He will lie in state from 9:30 a.m. Monday at the church until the time of mass. Memorials may be made to Capuchin Soup Kitchen or the charity of your choice. Veronica Gelnaw Veronica Louise Gelnaw, 76, long-time resident of Elkton, passed away on Thursday, March 6, 2003. She is survived by five children, Joe Kleiss and his wife, Sue, Becky Bishoff and her husband, Art, Jane Dumm and her husband, Bob, Bill Kleiss and his wife, Lori, Rob Kleiss; grandchildren, AJ, Dawn, Sally, Dawn, Jeniffer, Bridget, Rachel, and Bobby; great-grandsons, Tyler and Sam; sister, Sister Martina Finn O.P.; brother, Bert Finn. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Ted and Joe Kleiss; brothers, Tom Finn and Micky Finn; sisters, Betty Amman and Agnes Kleiss. Memorials may be made to the Hospice of Michigan. Gertrude McPeak Gertrude M. McPeak, 78, of Port Hope, passed away Thursday, March 6, 2003, at Autumnwood of Deckerville following a long illness. Born in Detroit on March 17, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Jacob and Elizabeth (Palosaari) Soronen. Gertrude Soronen and Ashley McPeak Jr. were united in marriage in 1943 in Detroit. He preceded her in death on Aug. 25, 1979. She enjoyed sewing and working with handicapped people. Gertrude was a member of the Church of Christ in Bad Axe. She is survived by her children, Ashley J. McPeak and his wife, Joanne, of Howell and Dianne Farrell and her husband, Dale, of Port Hope; seven grandchildren, AJ and Eva McPeak, Carolyn and Joseph Kaltenbach, Bill McPeak, Rob McPeak, Todd Farrell, Tiffany Farrell, and Damon Farrell; a great-granddaughter, Zoe Kaltenbach. Gertrude was preceded in death by a sister, Hazel, and six brothers, Hubert, Ernest, John, Hank, Al and Raymond Soronen. Eileen Muentener Eileen Elizabeth Muentener, 82, of Pigeon, died Friday afternoon, March 7, 2003, at her home while under hospice care. She was born August 26, 1920 at the home of her parents, the late Anthony and Anna (Walding) Englehardt in Filion. On May 6, 1966, she was united in marriage to Gerald R. Muentener in Bad Axe. He preceded her in death on Jan. 24, 1999. She was a member of the Salem United Methodist Church of Pigeon and was a homemaker. Eileen enjoyed playing cards and going to the coffee shop to visit friends. She especially loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Surviving are six children, Janet Fleis and her husband, Al, of Westland, Dave Campbell and his wife, Pat, of Fairland, Ind., Karen McDonnough and her husband, Michael, of Canton, Donna Santelle and her husband, Al, of Sand Point, Florence Whelihan of Magnolia, Texas and Linda Jones and her husband, Allen, of Sebewaing; sisters-in-law, Alice Cooper of Cleveland, Texas and Julie Muentener of Port Austin; two brothers, Bob Englehardt and his wife, Elaine, of Bad Axe and Charley Englehardt of Washington; one sister, Cassie Ritter of Fraser; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her cat, Sweetie. Preceding her in death were two sons, Gerald Muentener Jr. and Stanley Cooper; two brothers, Ed and Dennis Englehardt; her sister, Marie Labelle. Donald Weiss Donald J. Weiss, 60, of Lenox Township and formerly of Port Hope, passed away Friday, March 7, 2003, in Mt. Clemens General Hospital following a four-year illness. Born in Harbor Beach on Nov. 6, 1942, he was the son of the late Wallace and Luella (Haggerty) Weiss. He was a four-year veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, serving in Cuba during the Cuban Crisis. Donald was the owner and operator of Son Weiss Excavating in Lenox and previously operated the Port Hope Meat Market in Roseville. He also farmed in his younger years. Donnie was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Richmond. He is survived by a daughter, Chris Dudek of Anchor Bay; a sister, Nina Essenmacher and her husband, John, of Lenox Township; sister-in-law, Elain Weiss of Roseville; two granddaughters, Samantha and Erin; several nieces and nephews. Monday, March 10, 2003 Arthur Abraham Arthur I. Abraham, 70, of Bad Axe, passed away on Sunday, March 9, 2003, at St. Mary's Hospital in Saginaw, following an extended illness. He was born on May 10, 1932 in Bad Axe, son of the late Stanley and Matilda (Schipinski) Abraham. He married Christine Masa on Nov. 7, 1955 in Angola, Indiana. He was a retired milk hauler and also worked at the former Nagel's Mobile Milling of Bad Axe. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rapson and a life member of the Grindstone-Port Hope Sportsman Club. He served in the U.S. Army, receiving the National Defense Service Medal. He enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, gardening, listening to polka music, and plowing snow with his old Ford tractor. He is survived by his wife, Christine Abraham of Bad Axe; two sons, Robert Abraham and his wife, Corinna, of Port Hope, David Abraham of Bad Axe; one daughter, Pam Koroleski and her husband, Ken, of Bad Axe; one sister, Nancy Filion and her husband, Don, of Filion; eight grandchildren, Eric Koroleski of Bad Axe, Kristy Koroleski and her fiance, Keith Stambaugh, of Sebewaing, Justin, Marci, Ryan, Brent, Kendra, and Otyllia Abraham of Port Hope; one niece, Traci Beatty and her husband, Abe, of Oxford; one great-nephew, Zachary Beatty of Oxford; several aunts, uncles and cousins. Hunt, 72, of Saginaw and formerly of Ubly, passed away on Saturday, March 8, 2003, at the St. Francis Home of Saginaw. Virginia was born on May 25, 1930 in Olive Green, Ohio to the late Montella and Ada (Wade) Wilcox. She married Duane William Hunt Sr. on June 23, 1945 in Sandusky. He preceded her in death on July 11, 1993. Virginia graduated with an elementary education from a country school. She lived in the Ubly area for 40 years before moving in 1975 to Phoenix, Ariz. with her husband. She attended Four Squares Nondenominational Church in Phoenix for many years. She returned to Michigan in 1994 to reside with her daughter in Saginaw. She enjoyed bowling and playing slot machines. Virginia is survived by four sons, Duane Hunt Jr. and his wife, Barbara, of Bad Axe, Richard Hunt and his wife, Darline, of Ubly, Bob Hunt and his wife, Bonnie, of North Branch, Ron Hunt and his wife, Janet, of Phoenix, Ariz.; two daughters, Eva Sparks and her husband, Bill, of Saginaw, Sue Lythgoe and her husband, Richard, of Salt Lake City, Utah; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Joseph Wilcox and his wife, Frances, of Lake Placid, Fla. Virginia was preceded in death by one great-grandchild, Elizabeth Hunt; infant grandson, Ronald Hunt; one sister, Eva Wilcox; two brothers, Charles and Forest Wilcox; one half-sister, Alice Beck. Tuesday, March 11, 2003 Amanda Ittner Amanda E. Ittner, 88, of Caro and formerly of Sebewaing, died on Monday morning, March 10, 2003, at the Tuscola County Medical Care Facility in Caro following a lengthy illness. She was born on Nov. 22, 1914 in Sebewaing, daughter of the late Charles F. and Emma R. (Gettel) Sonntag. She was united in marriage to Richard Ittner on Nov. 22, 1936 in Sebewaing. After 52 years of marriage, he preceded her in death on May 7, 1988. They lived in Sebewaing until moving to Caro in 1986. She was a former member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sebewaing and was most recently a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Caro. She enjoyed needlework and cross stitching. She is survived by one daughter, Karen Ann Peruski and her husband, Jerry, of Caro; one brother, Albert Sonntag of Sebewaing; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother, Paul Sonntag; one sister-in-law, Doris Sonntag. Selma Geiger Selma M. Geiger, 82, of Harbor Beach, passed away Monday, March 10, 2003, at Huron Medical Center, Bad Axe under hospice care. Born in Harbor Beach on April 18, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Julia (Kucharczyk) Lackowski. On June 23, 1936, Selma and George Geiger were united in marriage in St. Mary's Church in Parisville. George preceded her in death on Aug. 28, 2000. Selma was a parishioner of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Helena. She was a past member of the ladies Sodality Society. She loved to visit with friends, playing cards, quilting and loving her grandchildren. Wednesday, March 12, 2003 Sally Aubry Sally Aubry, 69, of Port Austin, died Thursday, March 6, 2003, at her home. She was born on March 1, 1934 in Roseville, daughter of the late Russell and Mildred (Tomlinson) Kitchen. She and Billie Lee Aubry were married on July 3, 1954. He preceded her in death in May of 1983. Sally loved spending time with her family. She is survived by three sons, Russell Keith Aubry and his wife, Christine, of Romeo, Steven David Aubry and his wife, Patricia, of Sebewaing, and Bruce Alan Aubry and his wife, Marcy, of Marlboro, Mass.; five grandchildren, Jason and his wife, Christina, Shannon, Laura, Leslie, and Brian; three great-grandchildren, Victoria, Jordan, and Aubry Joy; three brothers, James Kitchen of Port Austin, Richard Kitchen and his wife, Gerry, of Port Austin, and Austin Kitchen and his wife, Jan, of Clinton Township. Charles Klump Charles Henry Klump, 74, of Scottsdale, Ariz., passed away Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003. He was born in Harbor Beach on May 1, 1928 to Edwin and Ada Klump. He and Acenith "Acie" Stevens were married on June 4, 1948 in Grand Rapids. He was the owner/operator of Charlie Klump's Restaurant in Harbor Beach for 25 years. In 1980, Charlie and his wife Acie moved to Scottsdale, Ariz. where he worked for McCormick Ranch Golf Club as a chef until he retired in 2001. He loved to cook and loved to be among his family and friends. He thoroughly enjoyed cooking for the people he loved. The memory of his remarkable sense of humor will keep his family and friends smiling for many years to come. He will be missed by many. He is survived by his children, Randy and his wife, Jackie, of Rogers City, Jackie Gieger of Mesa, Ariz., and Eric of Port Huron; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister, Marge Cottrell of Hallowell, Maine; and special friend, Virginia Nauman of Decker. He was preceded in death by his wife, Acie; and in 1996 by his eldest daughter, Jan. Cremation has taken place as per Charles' wishes. No funeral will be conducted. A private memorial service will take place at a later date. Pauline Milligan Pauline Milligan, 92, of Cass City, died unexpectedly Monday, March 10, 2003, in her home. She was born May 20, 1910 in Cass City to Robert and Grace (Karr) Knight. She married James A. Milligan on Nov. 25, 1944 in her home in Cass City. Pauline was born, raised and lived in her home for virtually all of her life. She graduated from Cass City High School in 1927, and Michigan State College in 1931. She was a school teacher for Fairgrove, Unionville, Port Huron and Cass City schools. Pauline taught home economics and was in charge of the hot lunch program. She was a member of Cass City First Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed gardening, baking and sharing her food with others. Pauline is survived by her husband, James A.; sons, Dr. Robert Milligan and his wife, Dr. Sharon Danes, of St. Paul, Minn., David Milligan and his wife, Kristine, of Cass City; grandchildren, Adam Milligan, Samuel Milligan, Michael Milligan, and Elisabeth Milligan. She is preceded in death by her sisters, Vernita Knight, Lucile Knight, Elisabeth Althauser; brother-in-law, William Althauser. Perry, 79, of Bad Axe and formerly of Caro, passed away on Tuesday, March 11, 2003, at her home under Hospice care following an extended illness. She was born on June 3, 1923 in Grand Rapids, daughter of the late William and Iva (Bresse) Wegner. She married Byron "B.J." Perry on Nov. 9, 1939 in Caro. He preceded her in death on June 19, 1988. She was a member of the Bad Axe First Presbyterian Church where she was a member of the Women's Association, Tuesday Noon Bible Study, Miriam Circle and served on the Helps and Caring Committee. She enjoyed ceramics, collecting dolls, baking, and helping others whenever needed. She is survived by two daughters, Beatrice Theaker and her husband, Ivan, of Caro, Bonnie Perry of Bad Axe; one son, Terry Perry of Bad Axe; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great- great-granddaughter; special childhood friend, Ellen Mincy of Caro; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by foster parents, Foster and Gertrude Sherman; two brothers, William and Robert Wegner; two sisters, Margaret Osterle and Neva Haley. Thursday, March 13, 2003 Kyle Casey Kyle Alan Casey, 16, of Gaylord, died Tuesday, March 11, 2003, due to injuries sustained in an auto accident. Kyle was born in Bad Axe on Jan. 22, 1987. He was raised in Gaylord and was a tenth grade student at Gaylord High School. He played on the Gaylord High School junior varsity football team and was advanced to the varsity team during the district championship. Kyle was active in the Boy Scouts and enjoyed listening to music, playing paintball and computer games and loved science. He had a great affection for animals especially his two dogs and cat. Kyle is survived by his parents, Patrick and Susan Casey, and his brother, Michael, all of Gaylord; maternal grandmother, Shirley Phillips of Bad Axe; paternal grandparents, James and Joyce Casey of Kinde; many uncles, aunts and cousins. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather Cyrus Phillips. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, March 14, 2003, at 2 p.m. at St. Mary Cathedral in Gaylord. The Rev. Laurence Gaines Sr. Laurence "Larry" G. Gaines Sr., 53, of Owendale, died Tuesday, March 11, 2003, in Tendercare Nursing Facility in Cass City. He was born July 24, 1949 in Highland Park to Rayon and Emogene (Reese) Sullins. He married Jacqueline Case on Oct. 12, 1968 in Immaculate Conception Church in Detroit. They've lived in this area for 17 years. Larry worked as a dockman for Earl C. Smith Trucking Company for 28 1/2 years. He volunteered for the Family Independence Agency doing medical and juvenile transporting and also for the Huron County and Tuscola County sheriff departments transporting work details. Larry enjoyed camping and traveling. Larry is survived by his wife, Jackie; children, Denise Falbo and her husband, Frank, of East Pointe, Lisa Gaines of Sterling Heights, Laurence Gaines, Jr. and his fiance, Nichole Brown, of Bay City; grandchildren, Jacqueline Falbo and Vincente Falbo; mother, Emogene Sullins of Detroit; brothers, Ray Sullins and his wife, Lisa, of River Rouge, Dennis Sullins of Detroit; sisters, Barbara Hogston and her husband, Thurston, of Yale, Judy Gaines of Detroit, Janet Coffee and her husband, Gene, of Lincoln Park; several nieces and nephews. Friday, March 14, 2003 Clarence Boldt Clarence A. Boldt, 68, of Harbor Beach passed away Thursday, March 13, 2003, at Harbor Beach Community Hospital. Born on Aug. 24, 1934 in Ruth, he was the son of the late Albert and Ella (Brahmer) Boldt. On Nov. 20, 1954, Clarence was united in marriage to Gerry Cronce in Harbor Beach. Together they farmed in Sherman Township until his retirement. Clarence was a guitar player and recently taught himself to play the mandola. He often played for the senior residents of the long term care as well as weddings, parties and yearly at the Zion German Dinner. He also enjoyed playing with other area musicians. Clarence was an active member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Harbor Beach and was a member of the Lutheran Laymen's League and served his church in numerous capacities. He was a member of the Farm Bureau and loved hunting and beagle dogs. He is survived by his wife, Gerry, of Harbor Beach; children, Randy Boldt of Chickasha, Okla., Cindy Sopczynski and her husband, Michael, of Harbor Beach, Bonnie Messing and her husband, David, of Harbor Beach, Pattie Alsop and her husband, Dennis, of Lakeport, Judy Lautner and her husband, Richard, of Forestville; eight grandchildren, Mike Sopczynski, Jr., Robin, Jennifer, Peter and Travis Messing, Elizabeth and Kathrine Alsop and David Lautner; sister, Shirley Dimick and her husband, James, of Mentor, Ohio; sister-in-law, Evelyn Boldt of Harbor Beach. Clarence was preceded in death by his brother, Russell Boldt; and two grandsons, Andrew and Steven Sopczynski. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Monday, March 17, 2003, in Zion Lutheran Church in Harbor Beach with the Rev. Mark Girardin, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Rockfalls Cemetery. A scripture service will be at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday in the Ramsey Funeral Home in Harbor Beach. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, from 1 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home and from noon until the time of services on Monday at the church. Charles Eddy Charles A. Eddy, 79, of Gladwin, passed away Feb. 9, 2003 at the Saginaw Veterans Administration Hospital in Saginaw. He was born May 24, 1923 to Alfred and Helen (Bedford) Eddy in Huron County. Charles was married to Donna Deccons of Filion in 1946. She preceded him in death in 1986. He married Shirley (Kimmel) Eddy on Sept. 7, 1993 in Blanchard. He was the owner and operator of Eddy Auto Electric, retiring in 1977. He then worked at Brown Machine in Beaverton, retiring in 1984. Charles was a World War II veteran, having served in the United States Army. He has been a resident of Gladwin County since 1967, previously residing in Vassar. He was a member of V.F.W. Post 7303 and God's Love For Humanity in Reed City. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Eddy of Gladwin; sons, Terry Eddy of Vassar, Richard Eddy and his wife, Penny, of Vassar, Kenneth Eddy and his wife, Linda, of Gladwin, Dennis Eddy of Sanford; daughter, Glenda Gager and her husband, Mark, of Vassar; step-children, Enoch Kimmel of West Point and Solomon Kimmel of Harrietta; 11 grandchildren; 12 great- grandchildren; and brother, Richard Eddy of Columbus, Ohio. He was preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, at Hall Funeral Home in Gladwin with Paul Kile officiating. Burial took place in Eastland Cemetery in Saginaw. Christine Talaski Christine A. Talaski, 48, of Filion, died Wednesday, March 12, 2003, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Saginaw. She was born on Sept. 11, 1954 in Bad Axe, daughter of Patricia (Hagle) and the late James L. Champagne. She and Gregory Talaski were married on July 1, 1972 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Dwight Township. Chris owned and operated Bad Axe Tire with her husband since 1977. She was a member of St. Edward's Catholic Church in Kinde, the Two Cylinder Club, the Lincoln Swamp Kennels, the Preferred Reader Club and a board member of White Tails Forever. She participated in Relay for Life and was very active, working on fish fries and dinners around the county. Chris was a big supporter of the Junior Livestock and 4-H programs. She loved playing cards and enjoyed the outdoors. A very giving and compassionate person in life, Chris very fittingly was an organ donor after her death. She is survived by her husband, Gregory of Filion; three sons, Gregory Chad Talaski and his special friend, Julie Schipinski, of Kinde, Aaron James Talaski and his wife, Tammy, of Filion, and Eric Jeffery Talaski at home; her mother, Patricia Champagne of Pigeon; three sisters, Bernadette Heleski and her husband, James, of Pigeon, Frances DeWyse and her husband, Joseph, of Essexville and Mary Thompson and her husband, Todd, of Bay City; and her brother, Leo Champagne of Caseville. Funeral mass will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 17, 2003, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Dwight Township. The Rev. Mieczyslaw Oniskiewicz, pastor will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. A Vigil will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday at the Knoblock Funeral Home in Kinde. Visitation will be conducted from 4 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, from 1 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, and from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Marguerite Brandow Marguerite I. Brandow, 72, of Harbor Beach, passed away Thursday, March 13, 2003, at her home following an apparent heart attack. Funeral arrangements will be at 8 p.m. on Sunday at the Ramsey Funeral Home in Harbor Beach. Visitation will be from 6 until the time of the service.
