Brown, 72, of Decker, died unexpectedly on Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, in his home. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, at Kranz Funeral Home in Cass City with the Rev. Fred McDowell of Argyle United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Willow Grove Cemetery in Armada. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Aleda E. Lutz Veteran Medical Center or the Argyle United Methodist Church. Waldron Knechtel Waldron A. "Sim" Knechtel, 87, of Pigeon and formerly of Elkton, died on Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, at Scheurer Hospital. He was born on Oct. 18, 1915 in Oliver Township to the late Solomon and Elizabeth (Schlotzhauser) Knechtel. On Jan. 14, 1939, he was united in marriage to Verdalee Bouck in Berne, Ind. After high school, he began working at the Elkton Co-op Creamery, and in 1944 he took a position with Michigan Milk Producers Association from where he retired as a marketing representative in 1980. Waldron and his wife raised their four children at their Elkton home where they lived most of their lives. He was a member of the Elkton United Methodist Church, former member of the Elkton Civic Center Board, Elkton Lions Club and served on the Elkton-Oliver Fire Department for 20 years. He is survived by his wife, Verdalee; one son, Robert Knechtel and his wife, Diane, of Scotch Plains, N.J.; three daughters, Karen Roth and her husband, Doug, of Dryden, Darlene Wardhammer and her husband, Per, of Marysville; and Beth Tibbits and her husband, Kent, of Pigeon; eight grandchildren, Tammy, Debbie, Scott, Brad, Robert, Paul, Lance and Logan; 11 great-grandchildren, James, John, Joey, Melissa, Becky, Maggie, Josh, Trent, Carly, Carson and Christian. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Alvin, Simon and Milton Knechtel; three sisters, Ida Milholin, Melinda Lantz and Leila Knechtel. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, at the Elkton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Pete Crawford, pastor, who will officiate with burial in Riverside Cemetery in Elkton. Yvonne Lindland Yvonne Lindland, 74, of Harbor Beach passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, at Harbor Beach Community Hospital. Yvonne was born on June 8, 1928 in Amherst, Wisc. to the late Gerald and Linda (Loberg) Soule. She and Dewane Lindland were united in marriage on July 21, 1947. Yvonne loved to work with handcrafts and traveled to many places. She is survived by her husband, Dewane; one son, Richard Lindland, and his wife, Kathy; one daughter, Sharon Rae Miller and her husband, Wayne, of Maryland. Yvonne was preceded in death by a brother, Wayne Soule. A memorial service for Yvonne will be at 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, at the First Presbyterian Church in Harbor Beach with the Rev. Theresa Cutler officiating. Cremation took place at Sunset Valley Crematory in Bay City. Arrangements are being handled by Ramsey Funeral Home in Harbor Beach. Visitation starts at 1 p.m. on Monday at the church. Elsie Posade Elsie L. Posade, 86, of Elkton died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility. She was born June 24, 1916 in Detroit to the late Emanuel and Lydia (Stecker) Forster and moved with her family to Huron County when she was in her teens. On May 14, 1932, she was united in marriage to Berthold Posade at St. John's Lutheran Church in Berne. They lived all of their married life in Oliver Township where they raised three children and farmed together. Bert preceded her in death on June 12, 1975. Elsie was a caregiver to her mother-in-law, Katarina Posade, until her death in 1976. She was a faithful member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Elkton where she was very active in the choir and the ladies organization. She always enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening. She is survived by three children, Ruth Walsh, Ralph Posade and his wife, Lucille, all of Elkton, and Sharon Nehring of Grant Township; 10 grandchildren, Patti, Tim, Kathleen, Steve, Lisa, Tracey, Mark, Dave, Lori and Julie; 18 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Walter Forster and his wife, Carol, and Roger Forster and his wife, Chris; sister, Marilyn Chappel and her husband, Bill, all of Elkton. Preceding her in death were three brothers and their wives, Gustav Forster and his wife, Violet, Rudy Forster and his wife, Arleta, and Otto Forster and his wife, Betty; sister, Edna Forster. Klee, 42, of Ruth, passed away Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at St. Mary Hospital in Saginaw after an extended illness. Cathy was born Jan. 8, 1961 in Harbor Beach to Jerome "Curly" and Judy A. (Priemer) Messing. She married Ernest L. Klee on Sept. 13, 1980 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ruth. Cathy attended Sts. Peter and Paul Elementary School and graduated from Ubly High School. She worked for Pigeon Co-op (Ruth Farmers Elevator) for 18 years as a bookkeeper. She enjoyed watching her sons play sports for the Ubly Bearcats. She also enjoyed playing cards, skiing and collecting snowmen. Cathy is survived by her husband, Ernest L. Tuesday, January 14, 2003 Bernita Haertl Bernita "Bernie" (Western) Haertl, 82, died Dec. 15, 2002, peacefully at her home in Pinehurst, N.C. Bernie was born on Aug. 14, 1920 in Bad Axe and lived there until 1966. Bernie's passion was golf and she made her mark on all the golf courses where she lived. She also selflessly gave of her time to help and cheer up others. She is held gratefully in the hearts of all who knew her. She is survived by two daughters, Sandy McComb of Novato, Calif., Ann Thurman of Brighton; sister, Verna Schurr of Sun City West, Ariz.; step-children, Bruce Haertl of Indian Wells, Calif., Barbara Dorr of Daytona Beach, Fla. and Jake Haertl of Woodhaven, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; three great- grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Edwin J. Haertl; two sisters; and one brother. There will be a Memorial and celebration of Bernie's life for her family in Howell. Donations can be made in her name to Hospice or the American Lung Association. Helen McKinley Helen Frances Karr McKinley, 97, of Caro, died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, in Caro Community Hospital. She was born on July 27, 1905 in Millington to William and Ada (Akley) Reed. She married Floyd H. Karr on Sept. 29, 1924. He died Nov. 29, 1937. She then married William McKinley on July 1, 1942. He died on April 18, 1985. Helen worked a variety of jobs including at a laundry and picking beans in season. She was a Blue Star and Gold Star mother in World War II. Helen was the oldest living member of the Cass City United Methodist Church. She enjoyed refinishing furniture, china painting and going to garage sales. Helen is survived by her children, Aletha Misch of Cass City, Ellis Karr and his special friend, Ruth Freeman, of Caro, Dean Karr and his wife, Doris, of Caro; grandchildren, Richard Tait and his wife, Kathleen, of Bellville, Larry Tait of Dewitt, Rosemary Bushong and her husband, George, of Cass City, Alan Karr of Traverse City, Sharon LaPratt and her husband, Jim, of Caro, Debra Link and her husband, Jon, of Unionville, Kim Karr and his wife, Melanie, of Grand Rapids, Joyce Ann Schwartz and her husband, John, of Deford, Patricia Dietz and her husband, Duane, of Hiram, Ga., Ronald Karr of Deford; 17 great-grandchildren; three great-great- grandchildren; sister, Jannetta Conway of Ithaca, is the oldest and last surviving sibling at 105; and many nieces and nephews. Wednesday, January 15, 2003 William Bardell William Oliver Bardell, 64, lifelong resident of Bad Axe, died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, at Saint Mary's Medical Center in Saginaw. He was born on Feb. 16, 1938 in Bad Axe to the late William Eugene and Lorraine (Apley) Bardell. William and Betty June Louks were married Dec. 2, 1961 in Bad Axe. She preceded him in death on Sept. 2, 1997. William was employed by Huron Tool and Engineering for more than 25 years. He was a graduate of Bad Axe High School in 1956 and served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and walking his dog. He is survived by two daughters, Charlotte Meddaugh and her husband, Wayne, of Port Huron, Leigh Hershey and her husband, Dwight, of Strasburg, Pa.; one brother, Sam Glasgow and his wife, Liz, of Bad Axe; three sisters, Marie Isbister and her husband, Mike, of Bad Axe, Sarah Wilson and her husband, Walter, of Bad Axe, Mary Jane Brown of Kentucky; five grandchildren, Tim and Wendy Geiger of Bad Axe, Miranda and Melissa Heck of Strasburg, Pa., Amy Meddaugh of Port Huron; his mother-in-law, Wanda Louks of Bad Axe; and several nieces and nephews. Mabel Eyth Mabel Evelyn Eyth, 90, of Rochester, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, at Sunrise Assisted Living of Rochester. She was born on May 22, 1912 in Filion. Mrs. Eyth worked as a teacher for several years in Huron County and later at Canal Road School in Utica before deciding to marry and raise her family. She was a member of the Zion Evangelical Church in Mt. Clemens where she served as the first female president of the church council and with the women's Auxiliary. She was also a former member of the United Methodist Church in Bad Axe. She took great pride in the community of Mt. Clemens, serving on the Mt. Clemens Planning Commission and serving as past president of the Mt. Clemens Women's Club, past president of Wilson School P.T.O., and also past president of the Macomb County Girl Scouts - Otsikita Council. In her free time, Mabel enjoyed golfing, cooking, baking, entertaining children, and was known as a "voracious reader." She is survived by her son, Timothy Eyth and his wife, Susan, of Presque Isle; two daughters, Greeta Douglass and her husband, Glen, of Kalamazoo, Diane Basso and her husband, Peter, of Auburn Hills; two sisters, Alta MacAlpine and Ruth Green and her husband, Charles, of Bad Axe; six grandchildren, Shawn, Amy, Peter, Jennifer, Brian, Darin; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was born on Nov. 2, 1907 in Fostoria, Ohio and was a resident of Port Austin and a winter resident of Bradenton, Fla. Carl married Florence Doverson on Dec. 7, 1933 and lived in East Detroit. He worked for Bundy Tubing as an accountant until 1969. In 1976, Carl and Florence moved to Fremont, Ohio where Florence passed away in 1985. On May 31, 1986, Carl married Ester Pobanz. Carl and Ester lived in Bradenton, Fla. during the winter months and Port Austin during the summer. Carl was an avid golfer his entire life. During his younger years, he was a golf professional and instructor. He owned a driving range for a number of years. Among his numerous golf titles and awards, Carl earned the Detroit Recreation Department Senior Champion for 5 consecutive years. One of Carl's proudest points of his golf career was that he had made four holes in one. Carl continued to golf until he could no longer shoot his age, thus ending his golf game at the age and final score of 87. He is survived by his wife, Ester V.; a son, Clifford Robinette of Fremont; a step-son, Gerald Pobanz of Harper Woods; a daughter, Barbara Densmore of Richland; two step-daughters, Shirley Racioppa of Arlington, Texas and Dorothy Colletta of Port Austin; three sisters, Helen Sidwell of Ferndale, Ruth Robinette of Yucaipa, Calif., Rae Stanton of Auburn, Calif.; a brother, Tom of Yucaipa, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren. Pierce, Fla. She was born on Aug. 26, 1920 in Caseville to the late William and Myrtle (Dufty) Robinson. On Oct. 11, 1940, she was united in marriage to Ralph Steinman and was a resident of Ft. Pierce for the past 25 years. She is survived by her husband, Ralph of Ft. Pierce; one son, William Steinman and his wife, Donna, of Albuquerque, N.M.; two sisters, Edna Mae Palazzolo and Clarabelle Kobylski both of Caseville. Pierce, Fla. 34954. Kathleen Hess Kathleen Hess, 93, of Alma and formerly of Huron County, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, in Alma. Thursday, January 16, 2003 Steve Karpovich Steve Karpovich, 86, of Cass City died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, in Tuscola County Medical Care Facility in Caro. He was born on July 4, 1916 in Hamtramck to Roman and Mary (Smulka) Karpovich. He married Katheryn Lutomski on Aug. 3, 1939z in Caro. She died on June 4, 1977. Steve was a lifelong farmer. He was the second man hired at General Cable and worked there until his retirement in 1978. He served as President of his union local for eight years. He was a member of St. Agatha Catholic Church and was active with the parish picnic. He was a member of the Tuscola County Polish American Club. He was an avid gardener, loved animals and small children. He always helped the neighbors and enjoyed his cottage up north. Steve traveled to Poland and Switzerland. Steve is survived by his children, Edna Kujawski and her husband, Gordon, of Cass City, Stephen C. Karpovich and his wife, Faye, of Caro; grandson, David Karpovich and his wife, Tonya, of Gagetown; great-grandson, Charles; step- grandsons, Kevin Kujawski of Livonia, Gregory Kujawski and his wife, Justine, of Arizona, Matthew Kujawski and his wife, Shea, of Arizona, David Kujawski of Redford; Step-great-grandchildren, Kristofer, Gary, Tiffany, Matthew Jr., Derrick, Joseph; brothers, John Karpovich and his wife, Marianne, of Caro, Thomas Karpovich and his wife, Anita, of Brown City; and many nieces and nephews. Joseph Mazzoni Joseph Mazzoni, 84, of Kinde died Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe. Joseph was a U.S. Army Veteran. He was the VFW commander in Kinde for two terms. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and VFW. He was a member of the Grindstone Port Hope Sportsman's Club and the Moose Lodge in Bad Axe. Joseph owned the Grindstone Bar and Restaurant for 21 years. According to his wishes, cremation took place and there will be no service. Information was provided by MacAlpine Funeral Home. Frank Petrykowski Frank Benedict Petrykowski, 87, of Owendale passed away on Wednesday Jan. 15, 2003 at the United Hospice House in Marlette. He was born on Dec. 9, 1915, in Hamtramck, son of the late John and Josephine (Wolak) Petrykowski. He married Dolly Theresa Poklie in Hamtramck. Frank recently retired to Huron County from Belleville and started farming and tending to livestock. He previously worked as a steel worker in the Detroit area. He is survived by two daughters, Donna Riehle of St. Clair Shores, Sharon Nowicki and her special friend, Brian Volz, of Owendale; two sisters, Alice and Gloria; friend and caretaker, Irene Volz of Owendale; three grandchildren, Len Nowicki II and his wife, Deborah, of Minden City, Renee Phiffer and her husband, Steve, of Milan, Lou Eric Riehle and his wife, Michelle, of Macomb Township; four great-grandchildren, Robbie Riehle of Fenville, Len Nowicki III of Minden City, Jessica Phiffer of Milan, and Zachary Nowicki of Minden City. Larry Shuff Larry Walter Shuff, 55, lifelong resident of Bad Axe died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003. He was born Jan. 8, 1948, in Oakhill, Ohio to the late Clifford and Florence (Vititoe) Shuff. Larry and Georgene Schmittdiel were married Oct. 8, 1983. He enjoyed country music, working in the yard, family, friends, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Larry is survived by his wife, Georgene; two daughters, Mary Ann Miller and her husband, Brian, of Bad Axe, Laura Jeane Shuff of Bad Axe; two brothers, Fred Shuff of Unionville, David Shuff and his wife, Gloria, of Flint; five sisters, Betty McGuire of Unionville, Phyllis Delton and her husband, Nicholas, of Jackson, Shirley Lakies and her husband, Robert, of Bad Axe, Linda Ruhling and her husband, Daniel, of East Jordan, Mary Cram and her husband, Robert, of Jackson; two grandchildren, Jacob and Alexis Miller; and several nieces and nephews. She was born on July 1, 1957, in Pigeon to Robert and Mary K. (Cherry) Quinn. Teri grew up in Caseville and was a 1975 graduate of Caseville High School. She played basketball for Lake Superior State College, then transferred to Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo where she lived the rest of her life. She is survived by her son, Ryan A. Cavey and his father, Jeff Cavey, of Kalamazoo; her parents, Robert and Mary K. (Cherry) Quinn of Caseville; brothers, Dan Quinn and his wife, Rhonda, of Caseville, Mark Quinn and his wife, Karen, of Naperville, Ill., Tim Quinn of Downers Grove, Ill., Larry Watterworth and his wife, Darlene, of Okemos; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. today at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Kalamazoo. There will be another mass celebrated at noon on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at St. Roch Catholic Church in Caseville. The Rev. Fr. Violet Sorvari Violet H. Sorvari, 89, of Harbor Beach passed away Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, in the long term care unit of the Harbor Beach Community Hospital following a long illness. She was born in Karhula, Finland on April 23, 1913, the daughter of the late George and Elena (Aaltio) Hill. Violet and Jalo Sorvari were united in marriage in 1932 in Detroit. He preceded her in death on July 27, 1979. She attended Wayne State University and retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1975 after working for 26 years. She is survived by her two daughters, Joyce Stevenson of South Paris, Maine, Doris Meyers of Southgate; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. Cremation took place at Sunset Valley Crematory in Bay City and a memorial service will be conducted at a later time. Ramsey Funeral Home in Harbor Beach is handling arrangements. Philip Woycik He is a Man He is a man just like me. He laughed, he cried and suffered through some awful pain. He loved music. He is a brother, father, son, uncle, and friend. He is a special person to me. He is not suffering now. I remember the times when we talked, got mad, and cheered each other up. He is now waiting for me to join him again. His time is up on Earth. I will miss my brother. We will meet again. I don't want to see him suffer anymore. I love my brother. Philip Woycik, 37, died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, at Tendercare in Cass City after a long battle with Lou Gehrig's Disease. He was born on Oct. 10, 1965 in Bad Axe to the late Ernest and Ilene (Armstead) Woycik. Phil graduated from Harbor Beach High School in 1984, although most of his schooling was in Bad Axe. He was a great father who enjoyed cooking, music, and playing the tuba. He is survived by five daughters, Amber, Autumn, Jacklynn, Jessica, and Emma; a very special friend, Sharon; four brothers, John Woycik and his wife, Marcia, of Flint, Terry Woycik and his wife, Rose, of Ortonville, Roy Woycik and his special friend, Sue, of Warren, Charles Woycik and his wife, Beth, of Waterford; three sisters, Linda Bolinger and her husband, Dave, of Flint, Joyce Kendrick and her husband, Roger, of Flint, Beverly Zick and her husband, Dean, of Bad Axe; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Amy. Cremation took place. A memorial dinner is being planned for a later date. Memorials may be offered to the Family Discretionary Fund. Arrangements have been handled by MacAlpine Funeral Home. 1
