Deike, 80, of Forestville, passed away unexpectedly at her home on Thursday, December 11, 2003. Born in Forestville on May 17, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Bruno and Ida Marie (Westphal) Rudel. On July 19, 1941, Bette and Eugene Deike were united in marriage in Hazel Park. Eugene preceded in her death after 57 years of marriage on September 7, 1997. Bette was a lifelong resident of Forestville. She worked as a waitress and bar maid at the Lakeview Hotel in Forestville for many years and was a retired employee of the Clements Wire and Cable Company in Minden City, retiring in 1997. She enjoyed gardening and tending to her flowers. If she was not busy with that, she then would be either baking or embroidering. Surviving are her children, Eugene Deike and his wife, Jackie, of Macomb, and Gloria Pawlowski, of Harbor Beach; five grandchildren, JoAnn Sutton and her husband, John, Jim Pawlowski and his wife, Deb, John Pawlowski and his wife, Judy, Lori Salsbury and her husband, Lee, and Christine Deike; nine great-grandchildren, Rebecca, Bette Jo, Ben, Steven, Jeffery, Jennifer, Emily, Abby and Meg. Bette was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Burchett; and brothers Albert and Clarence Engel. Funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. on Monday, December 15, 2003, in the Ramsey Funeral Home, Harbor Beach, with the Rev. Henry Malone officiating. Burial will be in the East Delaware Cemetery, Forestville. As were Bette's wishes, visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of service Monday at the funeral home. Jeanne Lawrence Jeanne Lawrence, 56, of Lake Orion, died at home Friday morning, December 12, 2003. She was born June 14, 1947 in Grosse Pointe, daughter of the late John and Beatrice Egan. Jeanne married Terry Lawrence on March 25, 1990 at St. Edward's Catholic Church in Lakeport. Mrs. Lawrence was a graduate of St. Paul Catholic High School. She enjoyed fishing and shopping. Jeanne is survived by her husband, Terry; one son, Michael Marlo, Jr. and his wife, Rebecca, of Rochester; two daughters, Michelle Marlo and Rachael Lawrence, both of Lake Orion; three brothers, Michael Egan, of Texas, Tom Egan, of Chicago, Illinois, John Egan and his wife, Bev, of Laguna Beach, California; six sisters, Vicky Egan, of Texas, Janice Charynski and her husband, John, of Jeddo, Debbie Campbell and her husband, Mark, of Lapeer, Cathy Sweeney and her husband, Jim, of Chicago, Illinois, Monica Marlo, and Vanessa Marlo; and several nieces and nephews. Virgil Rifenbark Sr. Virgil Rifenbark, Sr., 78, of Bad Axe, passed away Thursday, December 11, 2003, at St. Mary's Hospital in Saginaw. He was born on June 3, 1925 in Bad Axe, son of the late Albert and Jenny (Schadd) Rifenbark. He married Dorothy Inda on April 24, 1965 in Verona. Mr. Rifenbark had worked at the former Active Industries in Elkton for 28 years. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Rifenbark, of Bad Axe; four sons, Dewayne, Jamie and Robert Rifenbark, all of Bad Axe, and Virgil Rifenbark, Jr. and his wife, Diane, of Moore, Oklahoma; five daughters, Dessalee Eisinger and her husband, Richard, Lorraine Susalla and her husband, Dennis, Linda Gay and her husband, Douglas, all of Bad Axe, Bonnie Juarez and her husband, Armando, of El Paso, Texas, and Giselle Ropp and her friend, Mike, of North Carolina.; four sisters, Grace Cove, Helen Cove, Virginia Bucholtz and Joyce Hacker, all of Bad Axe; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and his mother-in-law, Agnes Inda, of Port Austin. Monday, December 15, 2003 Jeremy Dreher Jeremy E. Dreher, 23, of Palms, passed away Friday evening, December 12, 2003. Jeremy was born January 24, 1980 in Deckerville to Matthew and Denise (Burns) Dreher. Jeremy was a 1998 graduate of Deckerville High School. He enjoyed softball, bowling, spending all the time he could enjoying nature, hunting with family, and visiting with family and friends. Jeremy is survived by his parents, Matthew and Denise Dreher, of Palms; two brothers, Matthew Dreher, Jr., of Palms, Jeffery Dreher and his wife, Wendy, of Palms; his maternal grandmother, Doreen Burns, of Harbor Beach; special friend, Laura Feury, of Forestville; several uncles and aunts; nieces and nephews, Matthew III, Kristina, and Elizabeth Dreher, of Deckerville, Michael and Derek Dreher, of Palms. Memorials requested to the Family Discretionary Fund. Joseph Lorencz Jr. Joseph Lorencz, Jr., 82, of Gagetown, passed away Friday, December 12, 2003, at Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe. He was born in Detroit on March 12, 1921, son of the late Joseph, Sr. and Mary (Hozsa) Lorencz. Following his graduation from Roosevelt High School in Wyandotte, he served with the United States Navy during World War II. On June 8, 1946, he was united in marriage to Mary L. Bozarth at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She survives him. Mr. Lorencz farmed in the area for 20 years, retiring in 1980. He also worked at Automotive Industries in Owendale, Pigeon Manufacturing and Sebewaing Industries, from which he retired in 1982. He enjoyed bowling, golf, and dandelion hunting. He was a charter member of the Owendale Lions Club, where he held several offices throughout the years, and was a 3rd Degree member of the Caro Council No. 3224, Knights of Columbus. He was a member of St. Agatha Catholic Church, Gagetown. Betty Smith Betty Joyce Smith, 72, of Port Austin, died Saturday, December 13, 2003, at Sunny Acres Nursing Home under the care of hospice with her family around her. She was born on December 24, 1930, daughter of Lester and the late Rebecca (Anderson) Smith. Betty loved sewing, crocheting, and making quilts. Her favorite thing in the world was to spend time with her family. Betty was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin. Surviving are her daughter, Diana Kosinski and her husband, Donald, of Port Austin; eleven grandchildren, Shelly Jimpkoski and her husband, Terry, Donald Kosinski, Jr. and his wife, Lisa, Becky Kosinski and her special friend, Michael, Rudy Kosinski and his wife, Amy, Troy Kosinski, Taffaney Ross and her husband, Harvey, Laura Monaco and her fiance, Brian Breuss, Tina McLaughlin and her husband, Jim, Julianne Kosinski, Travis Kosinski and his wife, Christina, and James Riley; and 18 great-grandchildren; her father, Lester F. Clara Wilke Clara E. Wilke, 89, of Palms, died Saturday, December 13, 2003, in Autumnwood of Deckerville. She was born February 10, 1914 in Delaware Township, the daughter of Charles and Bertha (Barbknecht) Lietke. She married Theodore Wilke on May 22, 1947 in Detroit. He preceded her in death on July 3, 1968. Mrs. Wilke was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, a member of the Ladies Aid, and a Sunday school teacher for many years. She graduated from Deckerville Community High School in 1933. She retired from Bindicator, Inc. after several years of employment. And she liked to quilt for the Lutheran World Relief. Mrs. Wilke is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Randall and Sandy Wilke, of Palms; one daughter, Mrs. Julie Siens, of Minden City; six grandchildren, Trisha Wilke, Scott Wilke, Tim Wilke, Paula Klee, Robert Siens IV, and Becky Siens; two great-grandchildren, Keenan Siens and Stephanie Klee; one brother, Harold Lietke, of Palms; and one sister, Mrs. Leona McGlasson, of Deckerville; and several nieces and nephews. Tuesday, December 16, 2003 Sylvester Bukowski Sylvester Bukowski, 91, of Sand Point, passed away Saturday, December 13, 2003, at Courtney Manor Nursing Home of Bad Axe. Sylvester was born November 30, 1912 in Sigel Township to the late John E. and Martha (Perek) Bukowski. He married Lucille Chinoski on November 25, 1932 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Parisville. She preceded him in death on January 1, 1973. He married Genevieve Vassallo on December 15, 1973. Sylvester graduated from the Bingham No. 2 Township School and attended Ubly High School. In 1932, he worked for Joe Block running a portable bean picking machine until 1934 when he moved to Detroit to work for the Chrysler Dodge Main Plant in Hamtramck. He started farming in 1937 in Argyle Township and kept working in Detroit until 1941. He sold his farm and bought a tavern in Argyle Township in 1943. In 1944 he sold the tavern and bought a farm on Robinson Road in Austin Township. He was involved in farm and milk producing organizations for many years. In 1966 he crop farmed and worked at General Cable in Cass City. He started a Robo Car Wash in 1968 in Bay City. He sold the car wash in August of 1977 and retired. He lived on Deckerville Road in Deford until 1985 when he moved to Sand Point. He is a parishioner at St. Roch Catholic Church in Caseville and a former parishioner at St. John Catholic Church in Ubly. He spent his winters in Holiday, Florida. He loved to play cards and belonged to a card club with friends for at least 52 years. Sylvester is survived by his wife, Genevieve, of Sand Point; three sons, Ronald Bukowski and his wife, Marlene, of Metamora, Richard Bukowski and his wife, Jinny, of Lake Orion, Roger Bukowski and his wife, Sharon, of Palm Bay, Florida; three daughters, Shirley Robinson, of Sand Point, Virginia Schaffer, of Marietta, Georgia, Jane Deachin and her husband, Robert, of Lake Orion; two step-sons, Richard Vassallo and his wife, Mable, of Silverwood, Ronald Vassallo and his wife, Kathy, of Vassar; one step-daughter, Shirley Lucik and her husband, Leonard, of North Branch; 34 grandchildren; 64 great-grandchildren; four great-great- grandchildren; 12 step-grandchildren. Lillian Maurer Mrs. Lillian Marie Maurer, 85, of Bad Axe, passed away Monday morning, December 15, 2003, at her residence. "Another Baby" - these joyous words were heard often at the Maurer home. With a family of ten children, Lillian was kept very busy being a homemaker all her life. As we celebrate Jesus's birth at this joyous time of year, Lillian wanted to join her husband, Bernard and daughter, Elizabeth, and be there for the heavenly celebration. She died with her children around her and under the care of hospice. Lillian was born November 16, 1918 to the late George and Katherine (Osentowski) Guigear in Austin Township. She married Bernard Maurer on November 23, 1940 at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Detroit. They celebrated 59 years of marriage. He preceded her in death on January 13, 2000. In her spare time, she loved sewing, crocheting, growing flowers and mostly enjoying her grandchildren. Newton Eade Newton G. Eade, Jr., 83, of Pigeon and formerly of Dearborn, passed away Saturday, December 13, 2003. "Big Newt" grew up in the upper peninsula. He graduated from Michigan State University and was in the U.S. Marine Corps, veteran of World War II. He was a successful entrepreneur and an excellent bridge player. Beloved husband of Evelyn. Beloved father and role model of Newt III (Nancy) and David (Micky) and grandfather of Carrie, David, Ryan and Jonathon. Predeceased by his first wife, Beatrice, in 1993. Wednesday, December 17, 2003 Margaret Eremia Margaret Eremia, 85, of Sebewaing, died Monday evening, December 15, 2003, at her home following a two-month illness. She was born February 9, 1918 in Sebewaing, daughter of the late Adolph and Elizabeth (Tabar) Eremia. Margaret had been employed at Prestolite in Bay City for 30 years before retiring in 1979. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Sebewaing. Surviving are many nieces, nephews, and one brother-in-law, Thomas Karbowski, of Clinton Township. She was preceded in death by five sisters, Anna Stockenauer, Barbara Lorentz, Elizabeth Genow, Kathleen Karbowski and Susanna Eremia; and two brothers, Joe and John Eremia. Harder, 89, of Pigeon and formerly of Country Bay Village, died Wednesday, December 17, 2003, at Scheurer Hospital, Long Term Care, in Pigeon. She was born June 17, 1914 in Huron County to the late Roy and Mary (Spalding) Tomlinson. Katherine Tomlinson and Rollie Harder were married February 27, 1934 in Kinde Methodist Church. Mr. Harder preceded his wife in death on October 24, 1988. Katherine was a graduate of Kinde High School. She was the head of the Fitzgerald School System cafeteria in Warren for 25 years. She wintered in Florida. She enjoyed gardening, quilting and baking bread and cinnamon rolls. Mrs. Harder is survived by one son, Richard Harder and his wife, Sherry, of Lapeer; one daughter, Glenda Masch and her husband, Roger, of Highland; two sisters, Iva Ramseyer and her husband, Wendel, of California, Ollie Smith, of Pigeon; one sister-in-law, Carolyn Tomlinson; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Lee Tomlinson and Roy Tomlinson; one sister, Doris Baslock; one brother-in-law, Rollie Smith; and one sister-in-law, Virginia Tomlinson. He was born August 12, 1922 in Bad Axe, son of the late Gustav A. and Bertha (Kernsprect) Hass. He married Doris Clark on July 28, 1945. She preceded him in death on December 15, 1990. Mr. Hass was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Bad Axe. He was a farmer for more than 60 years, first as a dairy farmer and then raising beef cattle. He enjoyed gardening and traveling, playing euchre and visiting with family and friends. He played the harmonica and enjoyed raising poultry as a hobby. Josephine McCarty Mrs. Josephine Mae McCarty, 89, of Austin Township, passed away Wednesday, December 17, 2003, at Autumnwood of Deckerville. Josephine was born May 8, 1914 in Argyle to the late Frank and Pauline (Fisher) Peters. She married Mark M. McCarty on October 2, 1934 at St. Joseph Catholic Church of Argyle. He preceded her in death on December 30, 1987. Josephine attended the Argyle and Lang Schools. Before she married, she worked in Port Huron and Detroit. After she married, she was a homemaker. She was a member of the Argyle, Ubly and Bad Axe Senior Citizen Clubs. She was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Argyle. She enjoyed cooking, baking and playing cards. Josephine is survived by three daughters, Ilene Franzel and her husband, Carl, of Ubly, Judy Freel and her husband, Duane, of Ubly, Paulette McCarty, of Florida; one son, William McCarty and his wife, Beverly, of Rochester; 17 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; 11 step-great- grandchildren; one sister, Marie Plevin and her husband, Wally, of East China; one brother-in-law, Patrick McCarty, of Ubly; one sister-in-law, Mabel McCarty, of Lake Orion. Josephine was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Mark Weltin and Janis Lautner; five brothers, Dolph, Virgil, Harold, Clifford and Edwin Peters; two sisters, Pauline Peters and Everal Walker. Funeral mass will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 20, 2003, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Argyle. The Rev. T.J. Fleming, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Ignatius cemetery. There will be a parish vigil service at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home of Ubly. Visitation will be from 2 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home and from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday at the church. Friday, December 19, 2003 Irene Rudy Mrs. Irene G. Rudy, 78, of Cass City, passed away Thursday, December 18, 2003, at St. Mary's Hospital in Saginaw. She was born on May 27, 1925 in Bad Axe to the late Paul and Martha (Gatza) Warchock. She was united in marriage to William Rudy on June 28, 1947 at St. John Catholic Church in Ubly. He preceded her in death on February 16, 2003. Irene and her husband farmed together in Austin Township for 40 years. After their retirement, they moved to Cass City. She was a member of St. Pancratius Catholic Church in Cass City. She enjoyed cooking, baking, crocheting and quilting. Irene is survived by five sons, Donald Rudy and his wife, Linda, of Snover, Kenneth Rudy and his wife, Diane, of St. Johns, David Rudy and his wife, Melissa, of Holland, Gerald Rudy and his wife, Michelle, of Tacoma, Washington, Gary Rudy and his wife, Jeanette, of Bay City, one daughter, Darlene Tetter and her husband, William, of Sandusky; 16 grandchildren, Keith Rudy, Jennifer Smalley and her husband, Brent, Amanda Anderson and her husband, Dr. Kevin, Alana and Alissa Rudy, Pamela Hill and her husband, Stephen, Michael Tetter, Jessica, Brian, Kevin, and Sarah Rudy, Rene and Samantha Rudy, Kayla, Matthew, and Erica Rudy; several nieces and nephews; two brothers-in- law, Elmer Susalla, of Harbor Beach, Joe Rudy and his wife, Adeline, of Bad Axe; one sister-in-law, Rita Nowc, of St. Clair Shores. Irene was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Julie Tetter; four sisters, Victoria Longuski, Bertha Kubacki, Regina Osentoski and Susan Susalla; three brothers, Edward, Ignatius, and Raymond Warchock. Funeral mass will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 22, 2003, at St. John Catholic Church in Ubly. The Rev. Steve Fillion, pastor of St. Pancratius Catholic Church in Cass City, will officiate. Regina Rapson Regina Marie Rapson, 86, of Lake Orion, Port Austin and Greenvalley, Arizona. passed quietly away on Wednesday, December 17, 2003, while sleeping. Her death occurred after a long fight with Leukemia. Loving mother of Marie Hedgcock and her husband, James. Dear grandmother of Melissa and Scott Hedgcock. Wrubel, 95, of Harbor Beach, passed away Friday morning, December 19, 2003, in Meadowbrook Lodge Nursing Center Rochester.
