Sunday, April 27, 2003 Luther Hicks Mr. Luther LaVearne Hicks, 58, of Harbor Beach and formerly of Texas, died Friday, April 25, 2003, at the Aleda Lutz VA Medical Center of Saginaw. He was born May 13, 1944 in Grand Rapids, son of Reggie Hicks and the late Della (Silsby) Hicks. He married Catherine Lillian Schwartz on Nov. 24, 1990 in Ubly. He attended the Grand Rapids public school. He was employed at Active Industries, worked as a chef in Grand Rapids, and worked as a nurses aid for the last seven years in Michigan, Ohio, and Texas. He served in the U.S. Army. He loved to read science fiction books, crochet and listen to country music. He is survived by his wife, Catherine, of Harbor Beach; his father, Reggie Hicks and his wife, Elaine, of Grand Rapids; his daughter, Samantha Jean Hicks, of Tennessee.; his son, Ronnie Dexter, of Colorado.; six grandchildren; two step- daughters, Tina Siemen and her husband, Michael, of Harbor Beach, and Marlene Whitenburg and her husband, John, of Toledo, Ohio; one step-brother, James Hicks of Grand Rapids; three step-sisters, Jacki Remersma and her husband, Don, of Holland, Jeanne Brink, of Holland, and Julie Ash, of Holland; many nieces and nephews, brothers- in-law and sisters-in-law. He was preceded in death by his mother, Della Silsby; his sister, Margarit Hicks; and one infant step-daughter, Linda Muma. Cremation will take place at Sunset Valley Crematory of Bay City. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are being handled by the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home of Ubly. Ferne Kunisch Ferne E. Kunisch, 84, of Sebewaing, died Saturday morning, April 26, 2003, at Marlette Hospice following a brief illness. She was born Jan. 13, 1919 in Bay Port, daughter of the late Gordon and Ada (Baker) Morris. She was united in marriage to Charles "Carl" Kunisch on Feb. 28, 1943 in Beaverton. He preceded her in death on Oct. 28, 1997. Ferne has been a substitute teacher for many years and later the librarian for the Sebewaing Public Schools and later Unionville-Sebewaing Area Schools before retiring in 1981. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Sebewaing. Her main hobby was her children and grandchildren. Surviving are one son, Charles Kunisch and his wife, Ellen, of Jeddo; one daughter, Patricia Dunning and her husband, Robert, of Rockford, Ill.; seven grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Tom Smith, of Sanford; several nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Gail Smith and Pauline Oak, and one brother, Bud Morris. The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 29, 2003, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sebewaing. The Rev. Daniel Hahn will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing. She will lie in state from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service Tuesday at the church. Pringle, 54, lifelong resident of Deford, passed away Thursday, April 24, 2003, at Lapeer Regional Hospital in Lapeer. He was born Sept. 23, 1948 in Cass City, son to Charles Grant and Marjorie (Wright) Pringle. He graduated from Cass City High School in 1966. He married Roberta Ross on June 17, 1972 in Clifford. Mr. Pringle owned and operated Pringle Trucking and then drove a milk truck for M & G Trucking and Rasmussen Transport. He is survived by his wife, Roberta; son, Ryan James Pringle, of Cass City; daughters, Robin Graves and her husband, Donald, of Mayville, and Ronda Pringle, of Deford; mother, Marjorie (Pringle) Gage, of Deford; brother, Gary Pringle, of Deford; sister, Kathy Champagne and her husband, Ed, of Owendale; grandsons, Jordan, Timothy, and Thomas Waggoner, and Brendan Nichol; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Grant Pringle. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, April 28, 2003, at Marsh Funeral Chapel in Marlette with Chuck Emmert officiating. Clarence Jahr Clarence "Sprizz" Jahr, Jr., 70, of Sebewaing, died Friday, April 25, 2003, at Bay Regional Medical Center in Bay City following a brief illness. He was born June 26, 1932 in Owendale, son of the late Clarence H. and Charlotte (Wiechert) Jahr Sr. He was united in marriage to Janet A. Kuhl on Jan. 27, 1951 in Bay Port. Clarence had been employed at the former Michigan Milk Producers Dairy in Sebewaing for 32 years before its closing. He also had been a licensed commercial fisherman for 40 years. For the past four years, he had been employed at the Jahr Fish Company in Sebewaing. He served in the U.S. Naval Reserves. He was a member of the Sebewaing Sportsmen's Club and enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping. Surviving besides his wife, Janet, are two daughters, Kathryn "Kitty" Rose and her husband, Ken, of Gaylord, and Amy McKeon and her husband, Terry, of Rhodes; three sons, David Jahr and his wife, Ann, and Terry Jahr, all of Sebewaing, and Jamie Jahr, of Midland; four grandchildren, Andrea Pattee and her husband, Jeff, Chad and his fiancee, McKenzie Kreiner, Jonathan and Alisson Jahr; two sisters, Yvonne Otto and her husband, Lee, of Gladwin, and Rita Bolger and her husband, Robert, of Saginaw; one brother, William Jahr and his wife, Dianne, of Freeland; several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until the time of service Monday at the funeral home. Monday, April 28, 2003 Carl Rummel Jr. Carl T. Rummel Jr., 76, of Sebewaing, died peacefully with his family by his side early Sunday morning, April 27, 2003, at his home following a 4-month illness. He was born on June 27, 1926 in Sebewaing, son of the late Carl H. and Mary (Kahlman) Rummel. He was united in marriage to Erma M. Kilgus on Aug. 22, 1947 in Sebewaing. Carl was a self-employed carpenter and builder in the Thumb area for many years. He constructed many homes and cottages on Sand Point in the 1950's and 1960's as well as Good Shepherd Lutheran Church at Sand Point and the Immanuel Lutheran parsonage in Sebewaing. He and his wife, Erma, operated Tree Haven Bed and Breakfast in Sebewaing for several years. He also had been a commercial fisherman for many years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed carving and collecting duck and fish decoys. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sebewaing. He is survived by his wife, Erma; three sons, David Rummel and his wife, Susan, of Midland, Daniel Rummel of Unionville, Derek Rummel and his wife, Lynn, of Rockford; one daughter, Amy Wojciechowski and her husband, Jim, of Manistee; five grandchildren, Jason and Krista Wojciechowski, Daniel, Jordan and Taylor Rummel; one brother, Walter Rummel of Sebewaing; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Rummel has donated his body to the University of Michigan Department of Anatomy in Ann Arbor. A memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 3, 2003, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sebewaing. The Rev. Daniel Hahn will officiate. Inurnment will take place at a later date in the Northlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday and from 9 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Great Room of Immanuel Lutheran Church. Memorials may be made to Bay Area Hospice or Immanuel Lutheran Church. Mae Yackle Mae Lillian Yackle, 88, left her earthly home on Saturday evening, April 26, 2003, in Pigeon. Mae was the daughter of Andrew and Clara (Mey) Maturen and was born on Oct. 12, 1914 in Saginaw. When Mae was four years old, her mother died unexpectedly and from that time on, Mae, along with her three brothers and one sister were raised by a good hearted woman known as "Aunt Matie". Mae attended Arthur Hill High School in Saginaw where she excelled at basketball. She played for the Ames Methodist Church and won the state championship her first year. After graduation, she accepted an offer to play basketball for the Kresge Company earning $20 a week. During a visit to Pigeon, Mae met a young farmer by the name of Willis Yackle and was impressed by his gentle nature. They were united in marriage on March 25, 1939. They were blessed with four daughters. Together they enjoyed camping, traveling in their motor home, and spending time in Florida. Willis preceded her in death in 1991. Mae was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church, served on the Huron Medical Care Facility Board, organized the local Meals on Wheels program and was well noted for her outstanding leadership ability. Mae loved God and her family. She was an avid sports fan her entire life and still attended Laker basketball games at the age of 85. Mae is survived by three daughters, Charmaine Fahrner and her husband, Jon, of Cass City, Ruth Depner and her husband, John, of Caseville, and Kristine Parker, of Boulder, Colo.; six grandchildren, Tim Fahrner, Michelle Erla, Eric Depner, Dan Depner, Annette Renn and Angela Herford; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Elaine Weidman in 1988; her husband, Willis in 1991; three brothers, Clarence, Howard, and Andrew; and a sister, Helen Hughes. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 30, 2003, in the First United Methodist Church of Pigeon with the Rev. Gordon Nusz and the Rev. Margaret Passenger officiating. Burial will be in the Grand Lawn Cemetery in Pigeon. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the Meyersieck- Bussema Funeral Home in Pigeon and from 10 a.m. until the time of the services Wednesday at the church. Memorials may be given to United Methodist Missions, Laker Athletic Booster Club. Tuesday, April 29, 2003 Kenneth Daubenspeck Kenneth P. Daubenspeck, 82, of Caseville, died Monday morning, April 28, 2003, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. He was born on May 30, 1920 in Detroit to the late Paul and Florence (Jakubiak) Daubenspeck. After his schooling, Ken entered the U.S. Army and served under General Patton in North Africa, returning home in 1945. On April 27, 1946, he was united in marriage to Audrey Donnelly at St. Matthews Catholic Church in Flint. Ken and his father owned and operated P & K Garage, an auto body repair business. In 1953, he left the business and began work at Mitchell Buick in their body shop. In 1976, he retired and he and his wife moved from their Rochester area home to Canada Creek Ranch near Atlanta where they had built a retirement home. Five years ago, in 1998, they moved to Caseville. He was a member of St. Roch Catholic Church in Caseville and the Canada Creek Ranch for 27 years, a life member of the VFW Onaway Post No. 5857 and the Knights of Columbus Council No. 8042 Caseville-Pigeon. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Audrey; his daughter, Ruth Beadle and her husband, Charles, of Howell; five grandchildren, Teresa, Kenneth, Christopher, Tracey and Thomas; three great-grandchildren, Alexa, Casey and Kyle; brother, Paul Daubenspeck and his wife, Julie, of Boyne City. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Anne; and three brothers, Ralph, Carl and Charles. A funeral mass will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 1, 2003, at St. Roch Catholic Church in Caseville. The Rev. Fr. Kenneth Yaroch, pastor, will officiate with military honors and burial in the church cemetery. Goniwicha, 92, of Hastings and formerly of Rapson, passed away Sunday, April 27, 2003, at Thornapple Manor Nursing Home in Hastings. Helen was born July 20, 1910 in Helena to the late William and Wilhemina (Wagner) Groll. She married Sylvester Goniwicha on Sept. 14, 1929 at Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church of Harbor Beach. He preceded her in death on Sept. 25, 1986. Helen attended a country school. She was a member of St. Ambrose in Delton. She was a member of St. Rita's Altar Society of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rapson, where she was a former parishioner. She was a member of St. Mary's Rosary Sodality of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Parisville. She loved to quilt, garden, farm, attend garage sales, and spend time with her grandchildren. Helen is survived by five sons, Joseph Goniwicha and his wife, Mary, of Sun City, Fla., Ronald Goniwicha and his significant other, Sally, of Bay City, Allen Gunn and his wife, Joan, of Port Austin, Dennis Goniwicha and his wife, Grace, of Owendale, Richard Goniwicha and his wife, Donna, of Hickory Corners; two daughters, Phyllis Talaski and her husband, Archie, of Bad Axe, Sherry Swartz and her husband, Robert, of Harbor Beach; 27 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; one great-great- granddaughter. Helen was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Shannon Lloyd; two infant great-grandchildren, Joshua Goniwicha and Frances Nowicki; two daughters-in- law, Doris and Mary Ann Goniwicha; two brothers, Ray and Alvin Groll; two sisters, Adaline Belkowski and Ann White. Wednesday, April 30, 2003 Theresa Quinn Theresa Quinn, 81, of Kinde, died Monday, April 28, 2003, at Saint Mary's Medical Center in Saginaw. She was born on June 30, 1921 in Port Austin, daughter of the late John and Mary (Jaworski) Kozlowski. She and Francis Quinn were married on Nov. 8, 1941 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin. He preceded her in death on Sept. 1, 2001. Theresa was a member of St. Edward's Catholic Church in Kinde and the Kinde VFW Auxiliary. She was employed at the Wash King Laundromat in Bad Axe for twenty years. Theresa enjoyed camping, playing bingo, fishing, playing cards, and making quilts for her children and grandchildren. She loved her family very much. She is survived by her children, Merrily Jimkoski and her husband, Robert, of Port Austin, Wayne Quinn and his wife, Joann, of Kinde, Gail Norris and her husband, John, of Powell, Tenn., Darlene Kanaby, of Kinde, Ellen Rytlewski and her husband, Jerry, of Auburn, Colleen Majeski and her husband, David, of Filion; 21 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; sister, Eleanor Cassidy, of Pennsylvania; brother, Harry Kozlowski and his wife, Josephine, of Port Austin; sister-in-law, Catherine Davidson, of Cass City and Avalon Parrish, of Kinde; brothers-in-law, Mike Quinn, of Arizona and Lester Quinn and his wife, Ina, of Marlette. Thursday, May 01, 2003 Elmer Cook Elmer Cook 76, of Merritt Island, Fla., died Saturday, March 15, 2003, at Waterman Hospital, Eustis, Fla. Elmer was born in Parisville and came to Brevard County in 2000 from Daytona Beach, Fla. He was a member of the V.F.W., Moose Club, and Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his wife, Stella, of Merritt Island; daughters, Doris Gagner and her husband, Larry, of Tampa, Judy Thodey and her husband, Clyde, of Merritt Island, Marilyn Stumpf and her husband, Chuck, of McMurray, Pa., and Debra Russell and her husband, Mark, of Bethel Park, Pa.; son, Robert Cook, of Tamaqua, Pa.; brother, Harold Kucharczyk, of Ubly; sister, Margie Danielski, of Ubly; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Sherry Klemzak-Dandron Sherry Anne Klemzak-Dandron, 34, of Port Huron, died unexpectedly on Saturday, April 26, 2003, in Port Huron Hospital. She was born on Aug. 9, 1968 in Detroit to Thomas Klemzak and Linda Hedeen. She is survived by four children, Timmy, Michael, David and Daniel, all of Port Huron; her father, Thomas Klemzak, of Harbor Beach; mother, Linda Hedeen, of Port Huron; four brothers, Thomas Klemzak, Jr., Joseph Klemzak, of Bad Axe, Robert Klemzak, of Ubly and Timothy, of Port Huron; three sisters, Charlene Klemzak, of Harbor Beach, Jennifer Klemzak, of Ubly, and Tina Smith, of Mayville; and a niece, Trinity Star Klemzak, of Bad Axe. Friday, May 2, 2003 Raymond Streussnig Raymond Streussnig, 90, of Saginaw, passed away on Tuesday, April 29, 2003, at his home. He was born on Sept. 21, 1912, son of the late Raymond and Amelia (Turek) Streussnig, in Jeannette, Pa. He married Anna F. Menter on Oct. 2, 1934. She survives him. He was a baker, owning and operating Murphy's Bakery in Bad Axe, Ray and Ann's Pastry Shop in Cadillac, Court Center Bakery in Saginaw and co-owner of Hamilton Home Bakery in Saginaw. He is survived by his wife; six children, Theodore Streussnig, Paul Streussnig and his wife, Nancy, all of Bad Axe, Judy and Gaitis Skabardis, Linda Lagalo and her husband, David, all of Saginaw, Mary Ann Kuntze, of Ubly, Gretchen Soper and her husband, John, of Adrian; 17 grandchildren, Cherie, Ray, Ted, Pollyanna, Don, Jody, Paul, Erik, Guy, Maija, Scott, Juliana, Amy, Vincent, Amanda, John Raymond and Adam; 21 great-grandchildren; two great-great- grandchildren; seven siblings, Susan, Verna, Grace, Robert "Bob", Pius, Gertrude, Florence; many nieces, nephews and other relatives. Krause, Jr., 15, of Deford, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, April 30, 2003, in his home. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 4, 2003, at Kranz Funeral Home, in Kingston with Pastor Len Wyatt of Kingston Wesleyan Church officiating. John's cremated remains will be buried in Somerset Cemetery with his grandparents.
