McGuire, 85, of Port Austin, died Thursday, June 26, 2003, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Saginaw. She was born on Jan. 24, 1918 in Port Crescent, daughter of the late Thomas and Anna (Ahearn) McGuire. Doris lived in Port Austin all of her life and worked at Winders Products. She was a life-long member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin and a member of the American Legion Frank Horetski Post 499 Ladies Auxiliary. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Caroline McGuire; four nephews, Jack Rodgers, Thomas McGuire, Daniel McGuire, and Shawn McGuire; and two nieces, Carole Inda and Kelly Debono. She was preceded in death by her twin sister, Dorothy Rodgers, and her brother, James McGuire. A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 30, 2003, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin. Fr. Robert Shine will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 tonight at the Knoblock Funeral Home in Kinde, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church. A vigil will be held at 7 tonight at the funeral home. Wilbert Sturm Wilbert LaVerne "Bernie" Sturm, 81, of Pigeon, passed away Thursday, June 26, 2003, at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Kim Sturm, in North Muskegon. He was born in McKinley Township on March 15, 1922 to the late Ervin H. and Clara (Wildfong) Sturm, and graduated from Pigeon High School in 1940. On Nov. 6, 1943, he was united in marriage to Eileen Marie Ayotte in Detroit, and they celebrated 59 years of marriage together. LaVerne loved the outdoors and sports, and spent most of his life farming. He played the guitar, sang, and also played drums for a local dance band. After his retirement from Evans Products in Gagetown, he enjoyed yard work, gardening, ball games, and his family. He attended the First United Methodist Church in Pigeon. He is survived by his wife, Eileen, of Pigeon; two sons, Gary Sturm, of Southfield, and Ronald Sturm and his wife, Kim, of North Muskegon; and two grandchildren, Audra and Mason. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 30, 2003, at the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home, Pigeon, with the Rev. Margaret Passenger, pastor of First United Methodist Church in Pigeon, and the Rev. Robert Garrett officiating. Burial will be in the Souletown-Chandler Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today, and 9 a.m. until the time of service on Monday at the funeral home. Memorials for Mr. Sturm may be made to Visiting Nurse Services Hospice Program of Muskegon or First United Methodist Church. Hope Winter Hope Winter, 78, died unexpectedly Friday evening, June 27, 2003, at her home. She was born Jan. 21, 1925 in Bay Port, daughter of the late Roy and Lena (Ballard) Dutcher. She was united in marriage to Herman G. Winter on March 18, 1945 in Sebewaing. He preceded her in death on Aug. 17, 1985. Hope had been employed as a cook for many years at the former Log Cabin, Old Heidelberg, and Mary's Lunch restaurants in Sebewaing before retiring many years ago. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sebewaing. She enjoyed crocheting, needlepoint and especially loved being with her children and grandchildren. Surviving are two daughters and one son, Paula Winter and Jane Pike, both of Sebewaing, and Michael Winter, of Alger; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Joy Kuhl and her husband, George, of Bay Port, and Lois Baumer and her husband, Donald, of Carson City, Nev.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Kathryn Carter. The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 1, 2003, at the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing. The Rev. Daniel Hahn, pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church, will officiate with burial in New Bay Port Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Monday, and from 9 a.m. until the time of service Tuesday at the funeral home. Monday, June 30, 2003 – No obituaries reported Tuesday, July 1, 2003 Maria Chesney Maria "Mary" Reyes (Trevino) Chesney, 81, resident of Bad Axe, died Sunday, June 29, 2003, at Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe. She was born Jan. 6, 1922 in Laredo, Texas, daughter of the late Fermin and Paula Trevino. Mary Trevino and Minor Chesney were united in marriage on June 22, 1964 in Kinde. He preceded her in death in 1994. Mrs. Chesney was a member of Bad Axe Free Methodist Church. She also attended Bad Axe Church of the Nazarene and Colfax Methodist Church. She was a Sunday school teacher and teacher's aide in Laredo, Texas. Mary worked as "Rosey, the Riveter" building planes during World War II. She was a nurse's aide at Huron Medical Care Facility for 30 years. Mary enjoyed dancing, singing, playing cards and dominoes, crocheting, gardening, flowers and the beach. She loved people, especially her family. Mary is survived by two sons, Virgil Rifenbark, Jr. and his wife, Diane, of Moore, Okla., Robert James Rifenbark, of Bad Axe; five daughters, Dessalee Eisinger and her husband, Richard, of Bad Axe, Lorraine Susalla and her husband, Dennis, of Bad Axe, Linda Gay and her husband, Douglas, of Bad Axe, Bonnie Juarez and her husband, Armando, of Alpazo, Texas, Giselle Ropp and her friend, Mike Turner, of Spring Lake, S.C.; four brothers, Frank, Nicholas and John Trevino, all of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Ed Trevino, of Ohio; three sisters, Arene Schaefer, of Indiana, Bertha Robles and her husband, Alex, of Charlotte, Pauline Garcia, of Lansing; 14 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Minor; two sisters, Dell and Connie; and two brothers, Jerry Trevino and Roy Trevino. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 2, 2003, at MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe. The Rev. Richard Shuart will officiate. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today and from 10 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday. Burial will be in Colfax Township Cemetery. Memorials may be offered to the Family Discretionary Fund. Mildred Dennis Mrs. Mildred R. Dennis, 88, of Marlette, passed away Monday morning, June 30, 2003, at the Huron Medical Care Facility of Bad Axe. Mildred was born on Nov. 15, 1914 in Greenleaf Township to the late Luther and Elsa (Ball) Sowden. She later moved to Grant Township in Huron County. She married Clark Dennis on Nov. 2, 1953. He preceded her in death on Nov. 23, 2001. Mildred was a 1932 graduate of Owendale High School. She lived on their centennial farm near Marlette until her recent illness. She was a member of the Marlette First United Methodist Church. She enjoyed quilting, crafts and helping other people. Mildred is survived by one brother, James Sowden and his wife, Louise, of Clarkston; one sister, Virginia Sweeney, of Ubly; and several nieces and nephews. Mildred was preceded in death by two brothers, Clark and Gordon Sowden. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 2, 2003, at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home of Ubly. The Rev. Daniel Bowman, pastor of Marlette First United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Elkland Cemetery of Cass City. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today and from 10 until the service time at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly. Martin Kelly Martin J. Kelly, 82, of Caseville, died Sunday morning, June 29, 2003, at Covenant Harrison in Saginaw. He was born Nov. 15, 1920 to the late Thomas and Emma (Klein) Kelly in Cleveland, Ohio and moved to Bay Port in his youth. On June 15, 1941, he was united in marriage to Virginia Weeks in Bay Port. She preceded him in death on March 8, 1962. Mart was a commercial fisherman at the Bay Port Fish Company until June of 1944, when he was inducted into the U.S. Army and served in Italy during World War II. When he returned home in 1946, he worked several places before taking a position with Consumers Power in Saginaw. On May 11, 1963, he married Florence (Portice) DeLoach in Saginaw, where they made their home until he retired in 1979 after 22 years of service. He was a member of the Bay Port United Methodist Church, the Caseville Eagles, Sebewaing VFW Post and the Caseville Retirement Club. His big passion in life remained fishing. Surviving are his wife, Florence; two children, Pat Shabluk and her husband, Bob, of Saginaw, Dave Kelly and his wife, Julie, of Bay City; nine grandchildren, Mike and his wife, Lisa, Steve and his wife, Amy, Dave and his wife, Billie Jo, Jennifer and her husband, Matt, Sean, Emily, Abigail, Catherine and David; five great grandchildren; brother, Frank Kelly and his wife, Pauline, of Bay Port. Preceding him in death were four brothers, Fred and Charles Mann, James and Melvin Kelly; sister, Anna Hoermann. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the Champagne Funeral Chapel in Caseville with burial and military honors by the Sebewaing VFW at the Caseville Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today and after 10 a.m. on Wednesday. Memorials may be given to the Bay Port United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society.
