Sunday, March 30, 2003 – No obituaries reported Monday, March 31, 2003 Catherine Pelton Catherine "Cassie" Helen Pelton, 87, of Snover, died Saturday evening, March 29, 2003, at Tendercare of Cass City. She was born on April 22, 1915 in Harbor Beach, daughter of the late Alex and Mary (Wojciechowska) Kolar. She married John C. Pelton "Jack" on Feb. 18, 1937 at St. Joseph Parish of Argyle. She was a graduate of Ubly High School and attended Central Michigan College. She farmed with her husband and family in Austin Township. She was a parishioner of St. Ignatius Catholic Church of Frieburg and was a former member and officer of the St. Ignatius Sodality. She was a mentor to many area children. She enjoyed storytelling, reading and poetry, crossword puzzles, sewing, shopping and traveling. She was a former choir member of the parish and at college. She is survived by her husband, John, of Snover; two daughters, Cleopha Zauner and her husband, John, of Los Altos, Calif., Jacqueline Goretski and her husband, William, of St. Clair Shores; four grandchildren, Michael Zauner, Jennifer Clauson and her husband, Peter, Aimee Goretski and Christopher Goretski; one great grandson, Travis Clauson; one brother, Tom Kolar of Cass City. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Paul, Alex, Phil, Henry, Bernard, and John; sisters, Clara Woycik, Martha Zawilinski, Tracey Kolar, Christine Ulfig and Mary Kolar. Per her wishes, there will be no visitation. Cremation will take place at Sunset Valley Crematory of Bay City. A memorial mass will be scheduled at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home of Ubly. Helen Ritter Helen Angeline Ritter, 93, lifelong resident of Colfax Township, died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at the Tuscola County Medical Care Facility in Caro. She was born on Nov. 22, 1909, in Oliver Township to the late Robert and Susan (Schnieder) Baker. Helen married William Roberts in 1928. He preceded her in death in 1963. She was married to Max Ritter in 1966. He preceded her in death in 1987. Helen worked at the Huron County Medical Care Facility for 22 years as a nurse and occupational therapist. She was a member of the Elkton United Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star, Farm Bureau, and Elkton Senior Citizen. She enjoyed quilting, traveling, and crocheting. She is survived by four daughters, Dorothy Duggan of Port Austin, Norma Rouse and her husband, Orville, of East Lansing, Wilma Henne of Colfax, Phyllis Reehl of New Port Richey, Fla.; 17 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Dorothy Armstrong of Waterford Township, Edith Snell of Wayne; one brother, Bud Baker of Elkton; one sister-in-law, Pearl Baker. Helen was preceded in death by one son, Robert R. Roberts; two sisters, Marguerite Miller, Liddy Rosenthal; one brother, Robert "Bob" Baker Jr., three sons-in-law, Walter Duggan, Wayne Henne, Bob Reehl; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Baker. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April, 3, 2003, at the MacAlpine Funeral Home of Bad Axe with the Rev. Robert Garret and the Rev. Peter Crawford officiating. Burial will be in Colfax Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, from 1 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday and from 10 to 11 a.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be offered to the Elkton United Methodist Church. Tuesday, April 1, 2003 – No obituaries reported Wednesday, April 02, 2003 Elsie Kuehn Elsie H. Kuehn, 86, of Sebewaing, died Monday afternoon, March 31, 2003, at Bay Regional Medical Center in Bay City following a brief illness. She was born on Aug. 5, 1916 in Pigeon, daughter of the late Andrew and Anna E. (Wettlaufer) Binder. She was united in marriage to Nelson W. Kuehn on July 18, 1953 in Sebewaing. He preceded her in death on Jan. 4, 1974. Elsie had been employed as a domestic in Detroit for several years before moving back to Huron County. She then had been employed at Michigan Sugar Company and also Owendale Automotive before retiring several years ago. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sebewaing and the Farm Bureau. She enjoyed quilting and needlepoint. She is survived by one son, Nelson Binder and his wife, Eunice, of Pigeon; one daughter, Rhonda Kuehn, of Bay City; three grandchildren, Tom Binder and his wife, Barb, Gary Binder and his wife, Bree, Jim Binder and his wife, Corine; six great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Leona Bumhoffer of Sebewaing, Ada Binder of Pigeon, Helen Coombe of Allen Park; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters. The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 3, 2003, at Immanuel Lutheran Church. The Rev. Daniel Hahn will officiate with burial in the Silverlawn Cemetery in Sebewaing. Visitation will be from noon to 5 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. tonight at the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing. She will lie in state from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Thursday at the church. Memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sebewaing, St. John Lutheran Church 125th Anniversary Fund in Berne or Scheurer Hospital Fund. Eugene Lemke Eugene Roman Lemke, 64, of Ubly, passed away Monday, March 31, 2003, unexpectedly at his home. Eugene was born Nov. 6, 1938 in Hamtramck to Ervin and Irene (Zurek) Lemke. He married Carol Ann Rumptz on Feb. 24, 1962 at St. John Catholic Church of Ubly. Eugene attended the Ubly School. He was a self-employed mechanic welder and auto body repairman. He worked at Cove Sanitation for a few years. He was a member of St. Columbkille Catholic Church of Sheridan Corners for 40 years. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed camping, fishing, cards, visiting the casinos, vacationing in various states, and visiting with his family and friends. Eugene is survived by his wife, Carol A. Lemke, of Ubly; four sons, Alger Lemke and his wife, Kimberly, of Ubly, Gregory Lemke of Ubly, Jeffrey Lemke and his wife, Lisa, of Ubly, Paul Lemke and his wife, Mariann, of Ubly; six grandchildren, Shelby, Logan, and Ethan Lemke, Brandon, Briana, and Ashton Lemke; two step-grandchildren, Rebecca and Jeremy Roggenbuck; parents, Ervin and Irene Lemke, of Ubly; parents-in-law, Archie and Blanche Rumptz, of Ubly; one brother, Albert Lemke and his wife, Doris, of Ubly; one brother-in-law, Gary Rumptz and his wife, Kathy, of Ubly; eight nieces and nephews. Eugene was preceded in death by one infant sister and two infant brothers. Funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 3, 2003, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church of Ubly. The Rev. T. J. Fleming, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in St. John the Evangelist Cemetery of Ubly. There will be a parish vigil service at 8 p.m. tonight at the funeral home. John Slavin John Slavin, 81, lifelong resident of Bad Axe, passed away following a short illness Monday, March 31, 2003, at Bay Medical Center in Bay City. He was born on May 22, 1921 in Bad Axe to the late Michael and Mabel (Patterson) Slavin. John and Ellen Kohvakka were united in marriage on Oct. 27, 1951 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. They were married for 51 years. She survives him. He was a World War II veteran serving in the Pacific Theatre of Operations at Guadalcanal, New Caledonia, the Phillipines and the Army of Occupation in Japan. John enjoyed fixing cars, gardening, and woodworking. He was a fan of the Detroit Lions and the Detroit Tigers. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. He retired in 1977 after 23 years of service with the State of Michigan. He is survived by his wife, Ellen; three sons, Daniel Slavin and his wife, Sheila, of Spring Lake, John F. Slavin and his wife, Nanette, of Waukegan, Ill., Edwin Slavin and his wife, Gayle, of Kentwood; one daughter, Frances Fadie and her husband, Michael, of Commerce Township; one brother, Michael Slavin, of Caseville; two sisters, Margaret Kelly, of Caseville, and Catherine Rapson, of Bad Axe; ten grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and several relatives in Canada. He was preceded in death by four brothers, James, Thomas, Stanley and Martin; four sisters, Evelyn, Irene, Ann, and Flora. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 4, 2003, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Fr. John Killop will officiate. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe. There will be a scripture service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be offered to Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Thursday, April 3, 2003 – No obituaries reported Friday, April 4, 2003 Beatrice Lamke Beatrice V. Lamke, 78, of Ubly, passed away Thursday, April 3, 2003, at her home after a lengthy illness. Beatrice was born on June 3, 1924 in Ubly to the late Leo and Martha (Zurek) Danielski. She married John Jaskowski on Feb. 14, 1942. He preceded her in death on Jan. 27, 1979. She married Elmer Lamke on Nov. 21, 1981 at St. Mary Catholic Church of Parisville. Beatrice attended the MacDonald Country School. She worked at Clements Manufacturing. She then worked at General Cable of Cass City before she retired. She was a lifelong parishioner at St. Mary Catholic Church of Parisville and was a member of the St. Mary Rosary Sodality. Beatrice is survived by her husband, Elmer, of Ubly; three daughters, Diane Grifka, of Ubly, Dorothy Morell and her husband, Bernard, of Ubly, Emelie Thompson and her husband, Murray, of Tucson, Ariz.; two sons, Virgil Jaskowski and his wife, Lorraine, of Bad Axe, Rodney Jaskowski and his wife, Catherine, of Minden City; one step son, Dennis Lamke, of Parisville; two step daughters, Diane McLean and her husband, John, of Ubly, Judy Lamke and her significant other, Chris Peters, of North Carolina; one step-daughter-in-law, Carol Lamke, of Ubly; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Leo Danielski and his wife, Jeannette, of Ubly; five brothers-in-law, Ted Heilig, of Howell, Ervin Lemke and his wife, Irene, of Ubly, Cass Lamke and his wife, Ruby, of Bad Axe, Eugene Lamke and his wife, Mildred, of Parisville, Richard Lamke and his wife, Barbara, of Ubly; five sisters-in-law, Martha Plawinski, of Detroit, Anna Tomasczewski and her husband, Al, of Detroit, Marie Peruski of Ubly, Arlene Longuski and her husband, Jerry, of Ubly, Evelyn Susalla and her husband, Jake, of Ubly; several nieces and nephews. Beatrice was preceded in death by two grandsons, David Doerr Jr. and Dennis Grifka; one son-in-law, David Doerr Sr.; one sister, Esther Fisher; one step-son, Kenneth Lamke. Funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 7, 2003, at St. Mary Catholic Church of Parisville. The Rev. Andrzej Boroch, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, from 1 to 9:30 p.m. on Sunday and from 8 to 9 a.m. on Monday at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home of Ubly. There will be a Rosary at 3 p.m. on Sunday by the St. Mary Rosary Sodality at the funeral home. Sharon Horetski Sharon Horetski, 57, of Port Austin, died Friday, April 4, 2003, at her home.
