Sunday, August 1, 2004 Alfred Gay Alfred "Jim" Gay, 92, of Kinde, passed away Friday, July 30, 2004, at Bay Medical Center in Bay City. Mr. Gay was born June 7, 1912 in Kinde. He was the son of the late Joseph and Stella (Harris) Gay. He and Miss Pearl Robinson were married in 1934. She preceded him in death on August 5, 1965. In 1971, he and Irene Besaw were married at St. Edwards Catholic Church in Kinde. Alfred was a Kinde High School graduate in 1931 and a member of the 1931 championship basketball team. He was a long time master plumber in Huron County and was a state plumbing inspector from 1967 until his retirement in 1982. He was an active member of The First Presbyterian Church in Kinde. He also was a life member of The Verona-Huron Masonic Lodge No. 365 F AM in Bad Axe and a member of the Kinde Senior Citizens. He also served on the Kinde Village Zoning Commission. Mr. Gay is survived by his wife, Irene; one son, Kenneth Gay and his wife, Berneice, of Bad Axe; one daughter, Rosalie Reynaert and her special friend, Jerry, of Sanford; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; four step-children, Regina Thompson, of Alpena, Janet Collins and Jim Besaw, of California, and Carol Kath, of Arizona; two sisters, Lota Grinstead, of Florida and Arvilla Arch, of Shelby Township; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Charles Gay, and one sister, Eldora Martinson. He enjoyed reading and watching sports on TV, working on his shop, playing cards and visiting with family and friends. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 2, 2004, at the Kinde Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Raymond Orth and the Rev. Matthew Arneson will officiate. Burial will take place at the Colfax Township Cemetery. A Masonic Memorial Service will take place at 7 tonight at MacAlpine Funeral Home, Gage Chapel, in Kinde. Visitation will take place from 2 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Monday at the church. Those serving as pall bearers are Bob Arch, Greg Gay, Doug Gay, Mark Reynaert, Marty Reynaert, and Todd Thompson. Mark Joseph Pyonk Mr. Mark Joseph Pyonk, 30, of Deford, passed away Thursday evening, July 29, 2004. Mark was born on November 1, 1973 in Dearborn to James Carter and Janet Pyonk. He was a graduate of Cass City High School. He was employed for many years at Imlay City Plastics and Newcor of Clifford. He loved carpentry, hunting, fishing, and the outdoors. He was a true Harley Davidson enthusiast. Mark is survived by his wife; two children, his 5-year-old son, Kane William Pyonk, and 4-year-old daughter, Irene Destiny Pyonk; his parents, James Carter and Janet Pyonk, of Deford; his siblings, Marion Carter, of Detroit, Donna Carter, of Port Huron, James Carter, Jr., of Deford, Lisa Carter, of Dearborn Heights, Scott Carter, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Tabatha A. Smith, of Deford, Matthew Carter, of Deford; one uncle, Harry Pyonk and his wife, Betty, of Harrison; in- laws, Kim and Ron Johnson, of Columbiaville, Bret and April Saltzgaber, of Lapeer, Don and Laura Drayton, of Otter Lake; and many nieces and nephews. Patti Leigh Fleming Wade Wolfe Patti Leigh Fleming Wade Wolfe, 53, of Bad Axe died unexpectedly on Thursday evening, July 29, 2004, at the Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe after a massive heart attack. She was born December 24, 1950 in Pigeon to the late James and Mildred (Osborne) Fleming. She was a 1969 graduate of Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port High School and married the following year. Patti lived in Huron County most of her life where she was a past member of the Chandler Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed sewing, canning, singing and writing poetry. She especially enjoyed taking care of her grandchildren and visiting with family and friends. Surviving are her companion and friend, Richard Kirsch, of Ubly; three children, Tara (Jeff) Lawrence, of Pigeon, L. J. Wade and his friend, Christina Furness, of Filion, and Chancey Wolfe, of Elkton; two grandchildren, Brody and Drew; two sisters, Jane Patterson and her husband, Dave, of Hemet, California, and Judy Rickett and her husband, Larry, of Pigeon; three brothers, Bill Fleming, of Bad Axe, Dan Fleming and his wife, Marcie, of Novi, and Jim Fleming and his wife, Candy, of Franklin, Tennessee, and several nieces and nephews. Ball, 86, of Harbor Beach, passed away Sunday, August 1, 2004, at her daughter's home in Midland with hospice care. Born in Whittemore on June 21, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Jenny (Sage) Woodman. On May 28, 1952, Lulu and Charles Ball were united in marriage in Bay City. Charles preceded her in death on March 30, 1995. After receiving her master's degree, Lulu was a teacher in the Wade School, Port Hope Schools and retired from the Harbor Beach Community Schools. Lulu was a member of the Free Methodist Church in Harbor Beach and after retiring, she enjoyed needlework, visiting with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, doing puzzles and watching old-time movies. She is survived by her two daughters, Jane Good, of Midland and Judy Glaza and her husband, Steve, of Madison, Wisconsin; five grandchildren, Jennifer Patten, Marianne Good, Andrew Glaza, Adrian Glaza and his wife, Andrea, and Aaron Glaza; three great-grandchildren, Travis and Jessica Patten and Marlena Good. Funeral services for Lulu will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, August 3, 2004, in the Free Methodist Church of Harbor Beach with the Rev. Lyle Calkins and the Rev. John Vanest officiating. Harold Cox Harold J. Cox, 84, of Carsonville, passed away Saturday, July 31, 2004, at the Sanilac Medical Care Facility in Sandusky. He was born on February 19, 1920 in Urbana, Illinois, the son of the late Elwin and Lessie (Dunn) Cox. Harold married Helen (Wallace) Rader on March 31, 1968 in Carsonville. He began his long career in the grocery business in Harbor Beach. While in Harbor Beach, he worked in the grocery business, was a Watkins salesman, served on the Harbor Beach City Council and served as the Harbor Beach Chief of Police from 1949 to 1951. Harold later came to Carsonville where he owned and operated Harold's Market and was active in village politics, serving on the Carsonville Village Council for many years. He also was a member of the Countryside Free Methodist Church in Sandusky. Harold is survived by his wife, Helen Cox, of Carsonville; two sons, Ronald Cox and his wife, Kay, of Brown City and Phil Cox and his wife, Tammy, of Pigeon; a step-son, Larry Rader and his wife, Lily, of Lexington Heights; a step-daughter, Carol Rumble and her husband, Tom, of Deckerville; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Homer Cox and his wife, Charlotte, of North Carolina, Earl Cox and his wife, Jeanne, of Brown City, and Clarence Cox, of Argyle; two sisters, Martha Lessie Brundage, of Idaho, and Jennie Roach, of Attica; and several nieces and nephews and many, many friends. Harold was preceded in death by his brothers, Laurence, Merle, and Lloyd Cox; and a sister, Rachel Reamer. Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, August 3, 2004, at the Countryside Free Methodist Church in Sandusky. The Rev. Charles W. Thompson will officiate. Interment will be in the Washington Cemetery in Carsonville. Memorials in memory of Harold may be made to the church. Deward Reimann Deward "Dude" Reimann, 77, of Filion, passed away at his home on Friday, July 30, 2004. He was born on September 30, 1926 in Filion, son of the late William and Florence (Gay) Reimann. He married Frieda Becker on October 28, 1950 in Cadillac. He farmed and operated Reimann Brothers Excavating with his brother Alfred. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He had served as an officer in his church, St. Peter's Lutheran Church, in Kinde. He enjoyed building clocks and cutting stone. He is survived by his wife, Frieda Reimann, of Filion; two sons, Larry Reimann and his wife, Rebecca, of Bay City and Rod Reimann and his wife, Joni, of Filion; two grandsons, John and Joel Reimann, of Bay City; one granddaughter, Sarah Reimann, of Filion. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Orrie, Lloyd, Wilford, and Alfred Reimann; and two sisters, Leona Brehn and Florence Snyder. Services were conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 2, 2004, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Kinde. The Rev. David Putz, pastor, officiated. Burial will be in New River Cemetery. John Ratajczak John Bernard Ratajczak, 55, of Kinde, died Saturday, July 31, 2004, at his home. He was born October 6, 1948 in Bad Axe, son of Margaret (Maikel) and the late Arthur Ratajczak. John was a U.S. Army veteran and served in Vietnam where he was awarded the Bronze Star. He was a life member of the VFW in Fenton. John loved to spend time hunting, fishing, and playing euchre. He also had an extensive owl collection that he was very proud of. He is survived by his daughter, Kristy Ratajczak; four grandchildren, Bruce, Chelsea, Hanna, and Avery Ratajczak; his mother, Margaret Ratajczak; his sister, Michalene Tomlinson and her husband, Robert; and his brother, Dennis Ratajczak. John was preceded in death by his son, David Ratajczak, and his brother, Donald Ratajczak. Cremation will take place at Sunset Valley Crematory in Bay City. A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 7, 2004, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Dwight Township. Officiating will be the Rev. Mieczyslaw Oniskiewicz. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by the Knoblock Funeral Home in Kinde. Deacon Alvin F. Provot Deacon Alvin F. Provot, 75, went to be with his Lord on Saturday, July 31, 2004, when he died peacefully at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall, surrounded by his loving family. Beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he spent his life dedicated to living the principles of Christ, in order to share His message with others. Alvin was born in Detroit on July 21, 1929 to Alfred N. and Kathleen (Ridley) Provot. He graduated from Berkley High School in 1947 and attended the Chrysler Trade School. He married the love of his life, Marie Therese LeBlanc, on October 16, 1948, over 55 years ago. It was his loving marriage that inspired his involvement in the church, and his commitment to family and community. He was baptized into the Roman Catholic Church on his wedding day, which guided all his personal and spiritual accomplishments for the rest of his life. He worked for Liberty Special Tool Company in Royal Oak. In 1957 he became plant manager for their new plant in Bad Axe. He attended St. Paul's School of Religious Studies in the Diocese of Saginaw from 1971-1974. On June 8, 1975, he was ordained a Deacon in the Catholic Church at Sacred Heart Parish in Bad Axe. In 1975, he and a partner bought a metal fabricating plant in Bad Axe, which was destroyed by fire in 1977. In 1978, Al rebuilt the plant, and acted as owner and manager of the Martin Machinery Company. In 1981, Al and Therese moved to Madison Heights, where he began working at Special Drill and Reamers. He served as Deacon in the St. Vincent Ferrer Parish, and was very active in all areas of the church. In 1986, they moved to Coldwater in order to be closer to their children and grandchildren. They opened the "Provot Group Daycare Home", where Al was able to enrich the lives of many children with his unique sense of humor and fun. During this time, he also worked in human resources at Eagle Printing Company. He served as Deacon at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Coldwater, where his service included prison ministry; teaching confirmation, baptismal and prenuptial classes; providing counseling; officiating at funerals, weddings and baptisms; providing communion and prayer services for shut-ins and groups such as Pine Senior Respite Center; and making hospital visits. Al is a former Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus and is President of the 50-Plus Club at St. Charles. He was an active member of the Coldwater Kiwanis Club. Most dear to Al's heart was the Branch Area Food Pantry, which he founded and developed in 1987. In the fall of 2003, the Food Pantry was renamed the "Deacon Al Provot Food Distribution Center" in a ceremony conducted by the Honorable James A. Murray, Bishop of the Kalamazoo Diocese. He was honored with proclamations from Governor Jennifer Granholm, Representatives Bruce Caswell, and Mayor Robert Rumsey for dedication to this mission. He was a charter member of the Branch Interfaith Hospitality Network, which provides housing and support for families or individuals who are homeless and, in some cases, have no jobs. He has been a regular volunteer at the Relay for Life fundraisers, having battled lymphoma twice; and he was the keynote speaker for the Relay's kickoff breakfast in 2003. Al was an avid golfer and member of the Coldwater Country Club, where he played on two leagues. He recently was reintroduced to the game of pool by his good friend, Jack Lutz, and enjoyed the camaraderie at the Burnside Senior Center. Alvin is survived by 11 children, including three sons, Michael Provot and his wife, Barbara, of Canton, Patrick Provot and his wife, Donna, of Concord, Ohio, and Philip Provot and his wife, Theresa, of Coldwater; eight daughters, Marie Lippincott and her husband, Keith, of Port Byron, Illinois, Christine McMillin and her husband, Scott, of Sturgis, Helyn Castle and her husband, John, Kathleen Dunny and her husband, Keith, Susan Sobeske and her husband, Joseph, and Karen Sobeske and her husband, James, all of Coldwater, Marguerite Duke and her husband, Joe, of Bronson, and Judy Brombach and her husband, Robert, of Almont; 27 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Albert Provot, of Grand Rapids, Alan Provot, of London, Ontario, Canada, and David Provot, of Portland, Maine; three sisters, Kathleen Madison, of New Orleans, Louisiana, Vivian Miller, of Chalfont, Pennsylvania, and Lee Morse, of Rapid River; and step- mother, Helen Glass, of Portland, Maine. He was preceded in death by his parents. A Mass of Christian burial celebrating the life of Deacon Al Provot will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 4, 2004, at St. Charles Borromeo Church with the Honorable Bishop James A. Murray officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery. Deacon Al will lie in repose from 2 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday and from 9:30 until 11 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Charles Borromeo Church. Phyllis Margaret Cox Phyllis Margaret Cox, 84, of Deford, died Sunday, August 1, 2004, in Marlette Community Hospital. Interment will be in Novesta Township Cemetery, Cass City. Tuesday, August 3, 2004 Anne Theresa Durr Anne Theresa Durr, 88, of Bad Axe passed away Monday, August 2, 2004, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility. Born in Westport, Ireland on January 15, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Patrick and Anne (McGing) Gibbons. She and Charles Durr were married in England in 1945 and moved to Bad Axe in 1946. She worked at the Bean Pot, cooked at the Sacred Heart Catholic School in Bad Axe, was employed at Bad Axe General Hospital, and worked for Hamill Manufacturing for 17 years. She enjoyed gardening, race horses, and playing cards. She is survived by two sons, William Durr, of Caro, and Carl and his wife, Betty, of Bad Axe; one daughter, Maureen Durr, of Bad Axe; two brothers, Austin Gibbons of England, and Paddy Gibbons and his wife, Margaret, of Ireland; two sisters, Sara Gillard of New Jersey, and Kathleen Lavell of England; six grandchildren, Ann Durr of Bad Axe, Billy Durr Jr. of Caro, Robin Durr of Bad Axe, Kelly Durr of Bad Axe, Brandon Durr of Bad Axe, and Robby Durr of Madison Heights. Anne was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, in 1972; one son, Charles Robert, in 1990; three sisters, Agnes Timothy, Margaret Dougherty, and Julia Crnkovich; and one brother, John Gibbons. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. Wednesday, August 4, 2004 Bernice V. Anton Bernice V. (Antoszewski) Anton, 84, of Port Austin, died Monday, August 2, 2004. She was born on August 26, 1919 in Hume Township, daughter of the late Walter and Mary Ann (Chaplinski) Antoszewski. Bernice was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin, the U & I Club in Port Austin, and the American Legion Frank Horetski Post No. 499 Ladies Auxiliary in Port Austin. Bernice is survived by her sister-in-law, Eleanor Antoszewski; her nephew, Henry Antoszewski; her niece, Marylana Duckworth; several great-nieces and nephews; and special friends, Criss and Rob Robbins and Sally and Bill Wood. Bernice was preceded in death by two brothers, Stanley B. and Henry W. Antoszewski. A Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. on Friday August 6, 2004, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin. Loraine Howard Loraine Ann Howard, 66, of Bad Axe, passed away unexpectedly at her home on Tuesday, August 3, 2004. She was born on August 2, 1938 in Bad Axe, daughter of the late Stephen and Margaret (Gorang) Balint. She married Dale Howard on November 11, 1961 in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. Mrs. Howard had worked at Michigan Bell as an operator and then as a secretary. She also was a secretary for the Huron Intermediate School District. She loved to garden and enjoyed music. She especially enjoyed being with her grandchildren. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. She is survived by her husband, Dale Howard, of Bad Axe; two sons, David Howard and his wife, Pauline, of Bad Axe, Kenneth Howard and his wife, Lynn, of Troy; one daughter, Karen Hass and her husband, Mark, of Bad Axe; one brother, Gary Balint and his wife, Cheryl, of Dearborn; one sister, Bonnie Kelly and her husband, Patrick, of South Lyon; eight grandchildren, Darin, Cory, Julia, Daria, twins Brian and Emily Howard, and Janeen and Lauren Hass; and many nieces and nephews. Kiehl, 94, of Verona, passed away on Sunday, August 1, 2004, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility following a brief illness. He was born on December 30, 1909, son of the late August and Martha (Strauer) Kiehl. He married Elnora Snoddon, his wife of 69 years, on November 23, 1935 in the Ubly First Presbyterian Church. He was the owner of Kiehl Oil Company from its founding in 1947 to his retirement in 1983. He was a past member of the Ubly Lions Club, Ubly Community Club, a mason at the Ubly Lodge, and the Verona Golf Club. Arnold is survived by his wife, Elnora Kiehl, of Verona but currently residing at the Huron Medical Care Facility; one daughter-in-law, Marjorie Kiehl, of Ubly; four grandchildren, Jean Kloska, of Bad Axe, Patricia Latimer and her husband, James, of Port Huron, Carol Pihaylic and her husband, Robert, of Port Huron, Chris Kiehl and his wife, Holly, of New Baltimore; two great-grandsons; and five great-granddaughters. He was preceded in death by one son, LaVerne Kiehl, in 1998; three brothers, August Kiehl, John Kiehl and Ernie Kiehl; three sisters, Frieda Fuller, Clara Rogers-Christiansen, and Ester Kiehl. Lampella, 78, of Bad Axe, passed away Tuesday, August 3, 2004, in the Huron Medical Care Facility near Bad Axe. Born in Bloomfield Township near Port Hope on December 3, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Theresa (Schave) Pleiness. On September 8, 1956, Louise and Floyd Lampela were united in marriage in Highland Park. Floyd preceded her in death on August 16, 1984. Louise was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Port Hope. She is survived by her four sons, Jeffery Lampela, William Lampela, Roger Lampela and Douglas Lampela and his wife, Angie, all of Bad Axe; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three sisters, Caroline Reinke, of Port Hope, Lena Pleiness, of Harbor Beach, and Jean Berry and her husband, Stanley, of Caro. Louise was preceded in death by her brothers, Alex, Ernest, Erwin Pleiness; and three sisters, Esther Zelz, Oldga Eggert, and Emma Hartz. A scripture service will be at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday in the Ramsey Funeral Home, Harbor Beach. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today, from 1 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home, and from noon until the time of services on Friday at the church. Robert P. Vatter Robert P. Vatter, 46, of Lansing, passed away Monday, August 2, 2004, in Lansing. He was born October 20, 1957 in Cass City, the son of Donald and Marcella (Gatz) Vatter. Bob spent his childhood years in Cass City and after graduating, he came to Lansing to attend Michigan State University. He graduated from Michigan State University with a bachelors degree in public administration. He recently received a bachelors degree in religious studies from Sienna Heights University. He was currently studying as a Deacon Candidate with the Diocese of Lansing. Bob loved his parish family at St. Casimir Catholic Church where he was very involved. He most recently was the coordinator of "The Twins" Habitat for Humanity project in Lansing. Bob also served on many parish committee's and commissions and was a member of the St. Casimir Knights of Columbus Council. He met his wife, Jill A. Field, in 6th grade, and they were married on August 16, 1980. Surviving are his wife of 23 years, Jill; his parents, Donald and Marcella Vatter, of Ubly; two sons, James and John, of Lansing; two brothers, Joe and his wife, Ann, and Michael and his wife, Jolene; a niece, Rhea; two nephews, Zach and Reese; and his best friend, Scott Mellendorf and his wife, Mary. He is preceded in death by his sister, Deborah Vatter. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday, August 5, 2004, at 11 a.m. at St. Casimir Catholic Church, 815 Sparrow Avenue, Lansing, with the Rev. Fr. Bill Lugger as celebrant. Rite of committal will follow in Elkland Township Cemetery, Cass City, at 4:30 p.m. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at St. Casimir Catholic Church where the vigil will be prayed at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at 10 a.m. on Thursday at the church. Waslar, 62, of Port Hope, died Monday, August 2, 2004, at his home. He was born December 8, 1941 in Detroit to the late William and Rita (Trombley) Waslar. He married Janet Burns on June 13, 1964. William worked as a press operator for the Chrysler Corporation for 28 years. He served in the United States Marine Corp for six years. He was a member of Light House Assembly of God Church, of Harbor Beach, and the Anchor Bay Lions Club. He enjoyed bowling, playing euchre, horseshoes, and his model cars and trains. William is survived by his wife, Janet; one daughter, Laura Chwan, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; two sons, William Waslar and his wife, Christina, of Chesterfield Township, Gregory Waslar and his wife, Marnee, of Kalamazoo; one granddaughter, Melanie Chwan, of Oklahoma City; three sisters, Elizabeth Gilin and her husband, Patrick, of Roseville, Rita Reese, of Croswell, Jenny Nitchie and her husband, Ken, of Lenox Township; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 6, 2004, from the Gage Chapel MacAlpine Funeral Home in Kinde with the Rev. Dennis Cupery, of Lighthouse Assembly of God Church, officiating. Edgerton, 68, of Oak Beach, died Tuesday, August 3, 2004, at the Henry Ford Continuing Care Center Belmont in Harper Woods. He was born on February 20, 1936 in Detroit, son of the late Weldon C. and Helen (Kaiser) Edgerton. Weldon served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Caseville Fraternal Order of the Eagle 3690 and of Scenic Golf and Country Club in Pigeon. Weldon enjoyed spending his time playing golf and traveling. Weldon is survived by three children, Carmen Scaglione and her husband, Frank, of St. Clair Shores, Anthony Edgerton and his wife, Jennifer, of Canton, and Dominique Pohl and her husband, Douglas, of St. Clair Shores; nine grandchildren, Paul Scaglione and his wife, Cynthia, and Brianne Scaglione, Justin and Meghan Pohl, and Bryan, Daniel, Kara, Megan, and Alec Edgerton; one great-grandchild, Destynee; three sisters, Marilyn Besson and her husband, Orville, Judy Olsen and her husband, Jack, and Nancy Vermiglio. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Sally. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Friday, August 6, 2004, at the Knoblock Funeral Home in Kinde. Officiating will be the Rev. Robert P. Garrett. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Elkton.
