Sunday, October 10, 2004 Dorothy Gardner Dorothy Gardner, 62, of Bad Axe, passed away Thursday, October 7, 2004, at Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe. She was born September 28, 1942 in Otter Lake to the late Lawrence and Eva (Lee) Pfundt. Dorothy was a Victory in Christ Church member. She enjoyed doing crafts, painting, having or going to yard sales, going for car rides in the country, listening to country music, and spending time with her family. Surviving are her son, Lawrence Pfundt and his wife, Lucille, of Bad Axe; one daughter, Theresa Anthony, of Jackson; three brothers: Dale Pfundt and his wife, Gwen, of Worthington, Minnesota, Donald Pfundt and his wife, Edith, of Flushing, and Norman Pfundt, of Clio; one sister: Jean Ruth, of Clio; three grandchildren, Ricky, Melissa and Jeremy; her grandmother; Beverly Taylor; and several nieces and nephews. Dorothy was preceded in death by her mother and father and two sisters, Lucille Hodge and Maxine. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 12, 2004, at Victory in Christ Church in Bad Axe. Rev. Justin, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be at Zion St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery. MacAlpine Funeral Home of Bad Axe is handling arrangements. John F. Kroll Long-time Sebewaing area businessman, John F. Kroll, 75, died Friday, October 8, 2004, at his home with his family at his side. He was born January 21, 1929 in Sebewaing, son of the late Henry and Hannah (Mavis) Kroll. He was united in marriage to Joan G. Early on October 29, 1949 in Sebewaing. She preceded him in death on December 22, 1980. He then married Arlene Baur on September 12, 1981. John had been co-owner and operator of Kundinger & Kroll, Inc. in Sebewaing for 40 years before retiring in 1989. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, had served on the Board of Education, was a member of the Sebewaing Sportsman's Club, had been on the Sebewaing Fire Department for 25 years, served on the Sebewaing Village Council and the Sebewaing Township Library Board, and he was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved the outdoors and bird watching. Surviving are his wife, Arlene, of Sebewaing; three daughters: Susan Speers, of Lansing, Leslie Sharrow, of Bay City, and Sherry Dutcher, of Sebewaing; one son, Jeff Kroll and his wife, Lois, of Sebewaing; two step-daughters, Sheree Goebel and her husband, Wayne, of Sebewaing, and Susan Gremel and her husband, Michael, of Sebewaing; 10 grandchildren; and five step-grandchildren. The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 11, 2004, at Immanuel Lutheran Church. The Rev. Daniel Hahn will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. Lee, 88, of Caseville, passed away Tuesday, September 28, 2004, at Home Sweet Home Retirement Manor in Pigeon. Born in Vassar on July 22, 1916, she was the daughter of late Elmer and Hattie (Goodman) Titsworth. She graduated from Vassar High School in 1934. On May 16, 1936, she was united in marriage to Walter J. Lee in Vassar. He preceded her in death on May 14, 1999. Mrs. Lee helped her husband with the family business, Lee Salvage Company in Vassar, until Mr. Lee's retirement. Mr. and Mrs. Lee than moved to Caseville in 1989. She was a life member of the Eastern Star of Millington, a long-time member of Vassar United Methodist Church, and member of the Caseville United Methodist Church. She was a homemaker throughout her lifetime. Her survivors include five children, Carol Cooper and her husband, John, of Caseville, Ron Lee and his wife, Jackie, of Vassar, Diana Barrett, of Hutchinson Island, Florida, Debra Estep, of Caseville, and Sheri Lee-Cornett, of DeWitt; 15 grandchildren; and 20 great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother, Kenneth. A memorial service for Mrs. Lee will take place at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 16, 2004, at the Caseville United Methodist Church, with Pastor Philip Voss officiating. Gertrude Mae O'Parka Mrs. Gertrude Mae O'Parka, 88, of Ubly, passed away Thursday, October 7, 2004, surrounded by her daughters, at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe after a short illness. Gert was born Oct. 25, 1915 in Parisville to the late Theophil and Mary (Mandelski) Spitza. She married Isadore "Pete" O'Parka on October 19, 1932 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Parisville. He preceded her in death on September 21, 1999. Gert was a graduate of a country school. She worked at the Ruth Creamery and was a barmaid for many years at different taverns in the area. She worked with her husband in Gert's Catering for many years. She was a member of the Daughters of Isabella Fidelis Regina Circle #608, St. John Christian Mothers Circle 1, St. Anne's, and St. Mary Rosary Sodality. She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie # 3690 of Caseville, where she was a former chaplin. She was a former parishioner at St. Mary Catholic Church in Parisville, and has been a parishioner at St. John Catholic Church in Ubly since 1955. Gert is survived by five daughters, Rose Allen, of Ubly, Theresa Stomack and her husband, Clarence, of Minden City, Susan Krug and her husband, Robert, of Ubly, Arlene Schmidt and her husband, Al, of Bay City, and Julie Muentener, of Port Austin; one sister, Joann Piot, of Hazel Park; 23 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; and four great-great- grandchildren. Gert was preceded in death by two grandsons, Dean Hammerle and Todd Allen; four sons-in-law, Willard "Bill" Allen, Clarence Kubacki, Robert Smeader, and Jerry Muentener, Jr.; three sisters, Balbina Klama, Bertha Osantowski, and Minnie O'Parka; and one brother-in-law, Frank Piot. All services will be at the funeral home. Frank A. Peyerk Jr. Frank A. Peyerk, Jr., 86, of Filion, died Friday, October 8, 2004, at Courtney Manor Nursing Home in Bad Axe after an extended illness. Frank's goals and achievements in life were to instill values of honesty and the willingness to help others and faithfulness to God. He was greatly respected and loved by his children, grandchildren, and friends. Frank was born January 2, 1918 in Harbor Beach to the late Frank and Mary (Klama) Peyerk, Sr. He married Genevieve Sobieray on September 28, 1940 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rapson. Frank was a graduate of the country school system and farmed with his family and on his own until 1979. He was a life-long parishioner of St. Joseph Parish in Rapson, worked construction for many years, and was a member of the Laborers Union #1098 of Saginaw. He enjoyed euchre, fishing, and deer hunting. Frank liked traveling with his wife and visiting and inspiring his grandchildren and great- grandchildren with his values. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Genevieve "Gennie," of Filion; three daughters, Mrs. Pauline "Paula" Gucwa and her husband, Joseph, of Lapeer, Mrs. Carolyn Talaski and her husband, Duane, of Port Austin, and Shelley Richards, of Palm Harbor, Florida; and three sons, Kenneth Peyerk and his wife, Gwen, of Ortonville; Larry Peyerk and his wife, Melinda, of Port Huron, and Ron Peyerk and his wife, Cheri, of Bad Axe; 22 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Leona Lemanski, of Harbor Beach. Frank was preceded in death by five brothers, Ray, Tony, Ed, Joe, Julius; three sisters: Theresa Weymouth, Anna Wruble and Stacy Goniwicha; and one brother-in-law: Fabian Lemanski. Zurbrick, 86, of Pinnebog, passed away Thursday, October 7, 2004, at Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe. He was born August 6, 1918 in Snover to the late George and Pearl (Fox) Zurbrick. Mr. Earl Zurbrick and Annabel (Maynard) Wolfe were united in marriage February 7, 1981 at the Pinnebog United Methodist Church. Earl was a member of the Pinnebog United Methodist Church. He enjoyed antique tractors, playing cards, Tip of the Thumb Dance Club, farming, and spending time with his family. Mr. Zurbrick was a life-long agricultural farmer in the Snover area. Surviving are his wife, Annabel, of Pinnebog; one sister, Helen Buttermore, of Canton; four step-children: Carol Hobkirk, of Bad Axe, David Wolfe and his wife, Marcia, of Elkton, Jim Wolfe and his wife, Gail, of Caseville, and Debbie Ruth and her husband, Ron, of Elkton; 13 step- grandchidren; and nine great-grandchildren. Earl was preceded in death by five brothers, Adrian, Glen, Edgar, Russell, and Keith; and one sister: Mildred. Monday, October 11, 2004 Emily Adele Elmer O'Dell Emily Adele Elmer O'Dell, 80, of Port Austin, died suddenly and unexpectedly on Thursday evening, October 7, 2004, at Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe. Known as "Emy Del" by many friends, she was born in New York City on December 27, 1923. Her early years were spent in Westfield, New Jersey. She attended Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Virginia. She married Willet Herrington O'Dell on September 6, 1947 in New Jersey. The couple lived in many homes including New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Illinois, Georgia, and New Jersey. Emy Del was very active, loved to travel and enjoyed managing her homes, raising her children, and doing kind deeds for others wherever she was. Emy Del suffered a stroke on March 8, 1998 that paralyzed her right side and left her unable to speak. This was especially frustrating to someone who so loved life, reading, and communicating with people. But despite being confined to a wheel chair, she still managed to radiate happiness and to travel extensively throughout the USA visiting old friends. When home, Emy Del enjoyed her favorite pastimes, sunning herself, collecting ceramic turtles, perusing catalogs, and watching sports on television. Emy Del is survived by her husband, Willet; two children, Hunter O'Dell, of Salida, Colorado, and Emily Robbie, of Boulder, Colorado; four grandchildren, Jason Robbie and Christian Robbie, of Boulder, Colorado, Lissa Robbie, of Flagstaff, Arizona, and David Robbie, who is attending Syracuse University. Donations in Emy Del's memory may be made to the Port Austin or the Bad Axe public library. Cremation has taken place. Russell, 76, of Owendale, passed away on Sunday, October 10, 2004, at Covenant Health Care, Saginaw. He was born on April 29, 1928 at St. Albans, West Virginia to the late John and Stella (Holley) Russell. Ralph was a millwright at GM in Saginaw and for 25 years retiring on October 19, 1984. He enjoyed euchre, fishing, and hunting. He is survived by his wife, Mary A. Memorials may be offered to the family discretionary fund. Donald O. Tietz Donald O. "Bear" Tietz, 78, of Sebewaing, passed away on Sunday, October 10, 2004, at his home following a six-week illness. He was born April 7, 1926 in Sebewaing, son of the late Otto and Ida (Ertel) Tietz. He married Margaret "Marge" Eurich on October 12, 1944 in Denver, Colorado. She preceded him in death on May 11, 1993. Don had been employed as an excavating contractor for Tietz Contracting for 30 years before retiring in 1991. He had served in the U.S. Army in the European Theatre during World War II. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, the Sebewaing V.F.W. Post No. 4115 and the Sebewaing Lions Club and was a recipient of the Melvin Jones Award. Don was an avid hunter, fisherman and card player, and girls' softball coach for many years. Surviving are three daughters; Cheri Hopcroft and her husband, Marty, of Auburn, Pamela Wiltse and her husband, David, of Sebewaing, Jan Tatomir and her husband, Michael, of Farmington Hills; two sons, Rodney Tietz and his wife, Noreen, of Sebewaing, Jeffrey Tietz and his wife, Bev, of Unionville; 12 grandchildren; 5 step-great- grandchildren. Tuesday, October 12, 2004 Colin Karg Colin Kelman Karg, 56, of Fort Worth, Texas, a loving husband, dad, and doting grandfather, was called to his heavenly home Sunday, October 3, 2004. An electrician and jack of all trades, he loved to invent things and always helped anyone in need. Colin was born March 22, 1948 in Bad Axe, to the late Kelman and Dorothy Jurgess Karg. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Watauga, Texas. Colin married Della Woodke on June 14, 1969 at St. Johns Lutheran Church, Port Hope. Colin is survived by his wife, Della Karg, of Forth Worth, Texas; children, James Karg and his wife, Marlo, of Roanoke, Texas, and Jennifer Gruber and her husband, Bret, of Saginaw, Texas; brother, Lloyd Karg and his wife, Heidi, of Bradenton, Florida; sisters, Marlene Pfaff, of Goodrich, and Carol Clark and her husband, Donnie, of Harbor Beach; grandchildren, Heather and Julia Karg; and his favorite dogs, Loki and Tuffy. Murray, 86, of Frankenmuth and formerly of Bad Axe, passed away Sunday morning, October 10, 2004, at Tendercare Nursing Home in Frankenmuth. Esther was born July 20, 1918 in Parisville to the late Martin and Alice (O'Berski) Fisher. She married Clements V. Murray on February 10, 1945 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Parisville. He preceded her in death on April 19, 1986. Esther was a graduate of Ubly High School. She was a bookkeeper for Michigan Livestock retiring in 1980. She was a former member and officer of the Altar Society at Sacred Heart Parish where she was a parishioner for 50 years. Esther is survived by three daughters, Carolyn Murray, Marilyn Zander and Janet Murray, all of Saginaw; two sons, Paul Murray, of Jenison, Carl Murray and his wife, Karyl, of Harper Woods; two grandchildren; one sister, Lillian Peplinski and her husband, Frank, Sr., of Ubly; one brother, Marvin Fisher and his wife, Anastasia, of North Fort Myers, Florida. Esther was preceded in death by one son-in- law, Burt Zander; and one sister, Irma Fisher. Wednesday, October 13, 2004 Delphine Leavine Delphine Leavine, 95, of Dwight Township near Port Austin, passed away Tuesday, October 12, 2004, at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe. Delphine was born November 26, 1908 to the late Thomas and Cecilia (Horetski) Fisher. She was a resident of the Port Austin vicinity her entire life. Miss Delphine Fisher and Frank Leavine were united in marriage January 11, 1926 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin. They were married 65 years. Frank preceded his wife in death on August 29. 1991. Mrs. Leavine was a parishioner of St. Michael's Catholic Church and a member of the church's Holy Rosary Sodality. Delphine loved her animals, especially her dogs, and tending to her flower and vegetable garden. Delphine was the Dwight Township treasurer for many years and was employed at Mayes Level & Tool Company and The Winders Vile Shop. She also joined her husband and helped on the family farm. Mrs. Leavine is survived by one daughter, Genevieve Jandreski and her husband, Ernest, of Port Austin; five grandchildren, Gary Jandreski and his wife, Angela, Connie Nichols, Tim Jandreski and his wife, Paulette, Joyce Streussnig, and Keith Jandreski and his wife, Sheila; eight great- grandchildren, Jessica, Chris, Randi, Robin, Hannah, Ryan, Alexis, and Nicole; one great-great-grandson, Carter, son of Randi and David McGee; two sisters, Louise Yaroch and Anastasia Lasceski, both of Port Austin; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Leo Fisher and Paul Fisher; two sisters, Margaret Horetski and Rose Ventline; and four brothers-in-law, Cass Yaroch, Gordon Lasceski, Edward Horetski, and Peter Ventline. Thursday, October 14, 2004 Bettymarie Celmer Bettymarie Celmer, 82, of Caseville, died Wednesday morning, October 13, 2004, at Scheurer Hospital following a brief illness. She was born December 28, 1921 at the home of her parents, the late William and Luella (Pickett McIntosh) Flannery, in Lincoln Township. Bettymarie attended college one year, shortly after, she was united in marriage to Stanley A. Celmer on May 3, 1943 in Indianapolis, Indiana. She had been employed at General Motors for more than 34 years retiring in 1977. Bettymarie was and avid card player and a member of St. Roch Catholic Church, Caseville Retirement Club, Caseville Eagles Auxiliary and Drill Team, Sebewaing VFW Auxiliary and president of the Caseville American Legion. Surviving are four children, Anthony Celmer and his wife, Carol Ann, of Canton Township, James Celmer and his wife, Rosann, of Dearborn Heights, Dennis Celmer and his wife, Gail, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Henry Sulger, of Oregon; six grandchildren; four great grandchildren and a sister, Alvira Cain and her husband, Charles, of Orange, California. Preceding her in death was a grandson, Nicholas Celmer, and her brother, William Flannery. A funeral Mass will be conducted on Friday, October 15, 2004, at St. Roch Catholic Church, Caseville. He was born in Bay City on June 6, 1947, the son of John and Elizabeth (Horst) Kruse. On February 1, 1975, he married Kaye Downing in Unionville. Dale served with the U.S. Air Force for four years and was a member of VFW Post No. 7486, Fairgrove. In early years, he worked with Reed-Draper Chevrolet, Bay City, and had proudly served as parts department manager with Gettel Motors, Sebewaing, for 29 years. Surviving are his wife, Kaye; his mother, Elizabeth; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Keith and Rose Downing; brother, Larry and his wife, Shirley; brothers-in-law, Mac Downing and his wife, Audrey, Joseph Downing, and Dennis Sobieray and his wife, Mary; sisters-in-law, Judy Brown and her husband, Bud, Debbie Albrecht and her husband, Leroy, Lucy Hellickson, Marsha Heinkele and her husband, Harry, and Elaine Sobieray; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews; and his dog, Tugger. Kowalski, 85, of Minden City, passed away Tuesday, October 12, 2004, at the Deckerville Hospital after a long illness. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. Friday, October 15, 2004 Era Binkley Era Binkley, 88, of Port Austin and formerly of Franklin, Kentucky, passed away Thursday, October 14, 2004, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility. Mrs. Binkley was born April 11, 1916 to the late Ervine and Mattie (Taylor) Akens. Miss Era Akens and Theodore Binkley were united in marriage June 16, 1933. Theodore preceded her in death on April 23, 2000. Mrs. Binkley attended the United Protestant Church in Port Austin. Era enjoyed spending time with her family, taking care of her flower garden, and cooking. Era, a homemaker, enjoyed taking care of her house. Mrs. Binkley is survived by one daughter, Sylvia Snyder, of California; two sons, Robert Binkley and his wife, Julie, of San Marcos, California, and Donald Binkley and his wife, Judy, of Port Austin; five grandchildren, Glen Binkley, of Oxford, Mark Binkley of San Marcos, California, Diane Fitzpatrick and her husband, Denny, of Clarkston, Tawnya Bareis and her husband, Gary, of Mesa, Arizona, and Scott Binkley, of Otisville; three step-grandkids, Robert Bloodgood and his wife, Kim, of California, Curtis MacInnis and his wife, Jennifer, of Metamora, and William MacInnis, of Shelby Township; five great-grandkids, Nicholas LaMora, of Clarkston, Forest Bareis, of Mesa, Arizona, Ryan Binkley, of Otisville, Kelly Fitzpatrick, of Clarkston, and JR Bareis, of Mesa, Arizona; four step great-grandkids, Abby MacInnis, of Metamora, Bobby Bloodgood, of California, Robin Bloodgood, of California and Kate MacInnis, of Metamora. One son, Ted Binkley, one sister, Anne Akens, and her mother and father all preceded her in death. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 16, 2004, at MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe. The Rev. Robert Garrett will officiate. Burial will take place in Spring Hill Cemetery in Nashville, Tennessee. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday at the MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe. Paul Jaworski Paul Jaworski, 39, of Port Austin, died at his residence. He was born on December 20, 1964 in Bad Axe, son of Gertrude (Yaroch) and the late Chester Jaworski. Paul is survived by his son, Jason; his mother, Gertrude, of Port Austin; three sisters, Debbie Petree and her husband, Ken, of Peaster, Texas, Cindy Thompson and her husband, Tom, of Silverwood, Maureen Savedra of Milan, New Mexico; and one brother, Tom Jaworski, of Port Austin; nieces and nephews, Tim and Stacy Thompson, Nicole and Ashley Savedra, and Branden, Jacob, and Katelyn Jaworski; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Chester, and infant twin brothers, Timmy and Terry. Paul was a very good-hearted person who enjoyed doing things for his family. He liked to spend time hunting, fishing, and working around the farm with the livestock. A Funeral Mass will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 16, 2004, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin. Officiating will be the Rev. Robert Pare, pastor. Cremation has taken place at Sunset Valley Crematory in Bay City. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Knoblock Funeral Home in Kinde.
