Sunday, June 13, 2004 Robert Inman Bouck Robert Inman Bouck, 89, a retired agent of the United States Secret Service, died on April 27, 2004 of congestive heart failure at the Powhatan Nursing Home in Falls Church. Mr. Bouck was born on a farm near Elkton. In 1934, he entered Michigan State University. After studying electrical engineering for two years, Mr. Bouck decided to major in police administration, at that time a new field of study. His field work included an internship with the Michigan State Police Department. In 1939, Mr. Bouck earned a bachelor of science in police administration. On September 5, 1939, Mr. Bouck entered the United States Secret Service as one of the first two agents with college degrees in police administration. During his 29 years of service, he was involved in the physical protection of six presidents from Franklin Delano Roosevelt to Richard Nixon. Mr. Bouck held many important administrative, research, and training positions, including Director of Personnel Supervisor of the Counterfeit Division, Director of Training, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Protective Research Division, and Inspector of the Inspection and Audit Division. At the time of his retirement in 1969, Mr. Bouck was Special Agent-in Charge of the Special Investigations and Security Division. Highlights of Mr. Bouck's career included: • Member of the American delegation to the Potsdam Conference in July 1945 • Member of the American delegation of the Allied Commission on Reparations in Europe in 1945 (France, Germany, Poland, and Russia). • Provided security arrangements for numerous trips by Presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy including the Geneva Convention in 1955, China, India, Pakistan, Africa, and South America. Mr. Bouck also completed the advanced trip to arrange for President Eisenhower's ill-fated trip to Russia in 1960. After his retirement from the Secret Service, Mr. Bouck was a security consultant for the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. For nearly 20 years, Mr. Bouck advised the Board and individual Federal Reserve banks on a broad range of security issues, including the design, installation, and performance of security systems, the review of construction and renovation proposals, and the selection of contractors. After completing his work with the Federal Reserve, Mr. Bouck was a consultant to the central banks of several foreign nations, including Bolivia, Singapore, and Holland. Mr. Bouck was a founding member and President of the Association of Retired Secret Service Agents. Mr. Bouck was an active member of the Falls Church Presbyterian Church from 1953 until his recent illness. He was a deacon, an elder, and a member of the session. He also served as president of the Men's Council, and chairman of the Property and Maintenance, Christian Education, and Personnel Committees. Mr. Bouck is survived by his wife, Marjorie Dinan Bouck; three children, Judy Porter and her husband, Robert, of New York City, Robert and his wife, Julia, of Richmond, Virginia, and James and his wife, Cathy, of Chantilly, Virginia; four grandchildren, Jennifer Ogburn and her husband, Roger, Amy, Timothy, and Andrew; and one great-grandchild, Noah Ogburn. Wallace Hammond Wallace F. "Papa" Hammond, 79, of Fort Myers, Florida, died Thursday, June 10, 2004, at Lee Memorial Hospital. He was born on September 30, 1924 in Bay City to Lowell and Alice Hammond. He was a resident of Harbor Beach prior to moving to Ft. Myers in 1988. A graduate of Eastern High School in Lansing, he received his bachelor of arts degree from Northwood University in Midland. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served during WW II and was part of the preparation for the D-Day Invasion. He was a life member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Harbor Beach. He also was a life member of the Masonic Lodge in Bad Axe and he attended the American Legion in Ft. Myers Beach. Mr. Hammond was employed as a master mechanic for Hercules, Inc. in Harbor Beach for 45 years until his retirement in 1988. He was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church, Ft. Myers, and a former member of the Harbor Beach United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Barbara J. (Wood) Hammond; his children, Evelyn J. Bochenek, of Mason, Kathleen Eagan and her husband, Barney, of Ravenna, Dorrie Rogers and her husband, Richard, of Cape Coral, Florida, and W. Fred Hammond and his wife, Wendy, of Lexington, South Carolina; grandchildren, Kyle Krawczyk, Noel C. Rogers, Melissa Moran and her husband, Mike, Beth Ward and her husband, Billy, Rebecca Crouch and her husband, Greg, Michael Hammond, Eric Schneider and his wife, Therese, Tyler and Hope Eagan; great-grandchildren, Noel J. Ward, Brendan and Ashleigh Schneider; siblings Lowell Hammond of Lubec, Maine, Priscilla Lopinski, of Kalkaska, Barbara Dowker and her husband, Roger, of Lansing, Allyne Holloway, of Summertown, Tennessee, and Margaret Barker and her husband, Pat, of Grand Ledge. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Monday, June 14, 2004, in the Faith United Methodist Church, 15690 McGregor Blvd., Ft. Myers, Florida 33908. Mowery, Jr., 69, of Bay Port, died Thursday evening, June 10, 2004, at Bay Regional Medical Center in Bay City following a brief illness. He was born October 25, 1934 in Atlanta, son of the late John C. and Clara Mae (Cummins) Mowery. He was united in marriage to Pamela Lou Bryant on June 21, 1999 in Bay Port. John had been employed for the Romeo Community Schools as a teacher, guidance counselor and coach for 28 years before retiring in the 1980s. They moved to Bay Port eight years ago. He served in the U.S. Army 82nd AirBorne Division. Surviving besides his wife, Pamela, are two daughters, Judith Ann Woodall, of Rochester and Joy Lynn Mowery, of St. Clair Shores; two step-sons, Lewis Thick, of Pigeon, and William Thick, of Bay City; two grandchildren, Aaron and Stephanie; one sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Ole Pynnonen, of Basalt, Colorado; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Matilou. He was preceded in death by two sisters, June Smith, and Maybelle Bridges. According to his wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. A memorial service will take place at a later date. Memorials can be given to the American Lung Association or Duck's Unlimited. Arrangements are being handled by the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing. Florence H. Schuman Florence H. Schuman, 90, of Caseville Township and Lake Worth, Florida, passed away Wednesday, June 9, 2004, at St. Mary's Hospital in Saginaw after a brief illness. She was born in Caseville on September 29, 1913 to the late George and Mary Cleaver and graduated from Harbor Beach High School. On September 3, 1932, she was united in marriage to Elmer H. Schuman in Harbor Beach. Mrs. Schuman was a member of the Caseville Historical Society and the Caseville Library Club. She enjoyed her winter home in Lake Worth, Florida and golfing with her husband at Scenic Golf and Country Club in Pigeon. She was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Lake Worth and an associate member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Sand Point. She is survived by a son, Douglas J. Schuman, of Troy; a daughter, Carol Graham and her husband, Jack, of Utica; grandchildren, Todd Graham and his wife, Lisa, of Keller, Texas, and Margaret Keith and her husband, Randal, of Gig Harbor, Washington; three great-grandchildren, Austin Graham, Renee Graham, and Emma Keith. She was preceded in death by her husband and a sister, Georgene Lane. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home in Pigeon, with the Rev. James Nihiser, pastor of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Caseville Township Cemetery. Booms, 95, of Harbor Beach, passed away on Sunday, June 13, 2004, at Harbor Beach Long Term Care Facility. She was born September 8, 1908 in Sherman Township to the late John and Anna (Groll) Essenmacher. She married Wilfred C. Booms on June 4, 1930 at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ruth. He preceded her in death in 1988. Mrs. Booms attended the Helena School. She and her husband spent their married life on a farm in Sand Beach Township and attended St. Anthony Catholic Church in Helena. Estella was a former member of the Altar Society, a former 4-H volunteer and belonged to the Huron County Extension Club. Her hobbies included gardening, baking, especially Christmas cookies, and spending time with her family. She was an avid book reader, enjoyed crossword puzzles, tatting and quilting. She is survived by three daughters, Marjorie Messing and her husband, Edward, Sr., of Minden City, Sr. Evelyn Booms, IHM, of St. Clair Shores, Joann Ginther, of Saginaw; four sons, Gerald Booms, Sr. and his wife, Georgeann, of Ubly, Charles Booms and his wife, Georgine, of Pueblo, Colorado, Dennis Booms and his wife, Joan, of Kaukauna, Wisconsin, Harry Booms and his wife, Verna, of Harbor Beach; 36 grandchildren; 65 great-grandchildren; three great- great-grandchildren; former son-in-law, Willard Messing and his wife, Diane, of Minden City; one sister, Helen Weber, of Ubly; three sisters-in-law, Nora Essenmacher, of Harbor Beach, Bea Essenmacher, of Eastpointe, Anna Essenmacher, of Bad Axe. Joyce Dietzel Joyce L. Dietzel, 74, of Owendale, passed away Saturday, June 12, 2004, at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon. Joyce was born on July 25, 1929 at Hubbard Hospital in Bad Axe to the late Wesley A. and Pearl (Geiger) Kretzschmer of Pigeon. Joyce attended Hayes School and Pigeon Rural Agricultural School, graduating from Pigeon High School in 1947. She worked as a secretary at Dow Chemical Company in Midland until her marriage in 1949. On May 14, 1949, Joyce was married to Eldon C. Dietzel at Salem E.U.B. Church in Pigeon. They celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on May 14, 2004. Joyce was involved for many years in the Owendale Study Club, the Scheurer Hospital Auxiliary and the Salem United Methodist Women. She enjoyed many hobbies including bowling, quilting, sewing, and knitting. Joyce and Eldon enjoyed taking cruises and made many new friends when they took up dancing. She was an active member of Salem United Methodist Church in Pigeon. Joyce is survived by her husband of 55 years, Eldon; four daughters, Marjorie VanDyke and her husband, Glenn, of Holt, Patricia VanZant and her husband, John, of Gilbert, Arizona, Kathy McQueen and her husband, James, and Angela Dubs and her husband, Gerald, both of Owendale; five grandsons, Jeremy Dubs, Jim McQueen, Mike McQueen, Jeff Dubs, and Kevin Dubs; one great-grandson, Mason Dubs; two step- grandsons, Kevin VanZant, and Scott VanZant and his wife, Stephanie; two step-great-grandchildren, Tyler and Nicole VanZant; three sisters and three brothers, Harold Kretzschmer, of Pigeon, Ruth (Fritz) Damm, of Bay Port, Dale Kretzschmer and his wife, Lorraine, of Caseville, Carol Kuebler Ruszala and her husband, Ray, of Midland, Janet Kretzschmer, of Pigeon, and Leon Kretzschmer and his wife, Donna, of Caseville; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Gloria Kretzschmer, of Caseville, Donald Dietzel and his wife, Sharon, of Elkton, and Eileen Bedford and her husband, John, of Hudsonville; and many nieces and nephews. Dufty, 53, of Lapeer and formerly of Caseville, drowned Saturday afternoon, June 12, 2004, after suffering a heart attack while swimming in Lake Orion north of Pontiac. He was born August 14, 1950 in Pigeon to the late William and Marie (Miles) Dufty. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force for four years. He moved to Oregon after the service, where he worked at First Interstate Bank as the facilities manager. On August 30, 1980, he was united in marriage to Judith V. Gallivan in Vancouver, Washington. They returned to Michigan near Detroit in 1988 and he was employed at Manufacturers Bank until 1992 when it merged with Comerica. That year, he took the position of facilities manager at HoneyBaked Hams where he was currently employed. He and Judy moved to Lapeer in 1993. Bill was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Davison, and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed swimming, hunting, fishing, and building snow caves in the winter. He loved his family and knew the importance of life, giving more than 10 gallons of blood through the Red Cross blood program. Surviving are his wife, Judy; two children, Grace, at college in Grand Rapids; and Peter, at home; two brothers, Dan Dufty and his wife, Roxanne, and Tim Dufty and his wife, Barb, both of Caseville; five sisters, Cindy Smith and her husband, Fritz, D'Ann McLean and her husband, Dick, and LaDonna Dufty, all of Caseville, Jan McCrimmon and Terese Umphrey and her husband, Steve, both of Cheboygan. A funeral mass will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 17, 2004, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Davison. The Rev. Fr. Opitz, 103, of Westland, passed away on Friday, June 11, 2004. She was the beloved wife of the late Elmer J., loving mother of Harold, Janisse M. and the late Robert J., dear sister of Edna Keating and Wilma Walz. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. Anna is preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters. Funeral mass took place at 11 a.m. today, June 14, 2004, at the Church of Divine Savior, in Westland. Natzel, 66, of Mount Pleasant, went to be with her Lord on Thursday, June 3, 2004, at Central Michigan Community Hospital. She was born on January 17, 1938 in Mount Pleasant, the daughter of Leroy and Pearl (Degeer) Hayward. She married Edward Natzel on June 22, 1957 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Ellen was employed with the Mount Pleasant School System for 15 years. She was a former member of the Catholic Daughters Society and the Altar Society. Ellen loved being with her family and looked forward to the holidays. She was known as the cookie lady. Ellen enjoyed working in the yard, antiques, refinishing furniture and she enjoyed traveling immensely. Ellen is survived by her husband, Ed Natzel, of Mount Pleasant; children, Chris Natzel and his wife, Jean, of Bad Axe, Cheryl Natzel, of Chandler, Arizona, Kevin Natzel, of Phoenix, Arizona, and Karen Natzel, of Portland, Oregon; grandchildren, Brian Natzel and his wife, Lindsey, of Lewiston, Jennifer Natzel, of Portage; great-grandson, Christopher Natzel, of Lewiston; brothers, Leroy Hayward, of Caro, John Hayward, of Caro, Robert Hayward, of Abilene, Texas; and sister, Elizabeth Grinzinger, of Mount Pleasant. Ney, 88, of North Port, Florida and formerly of Bad Axe, died Wednesday, May 12, 2004, at his Florida residence after a long illness. He was born September 3, 1915 in Detroit, son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Eiselman) Ney. John Ney and Elizabeth "Peachy" Ignash were married September 28, 1946 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Dwight. He was the former owner of John's Bar, Bad Axe, a former distributor for Schlitz Brewery, former owner of Huron Party Store, Bad Axe, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving from 1941 to 1945, past president of the Michigan Beverage Association, and a past member of the Bad Axe Lions, Verona Hills Golf Club, and the Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his wife, Peachy; two sons, John Ney, Jr., of Strongsville, Ohio, Joseph Ney and his wife, Nancy, of Bad Axe; two daughters, Elizabeth Taylor and her husband, Bobby, of Palm Coast, Florida, and Tracy Barnes and her husband, Jim, of North Port, Florida; six grandchildren, Alissa King, of Bad Axe, Courtney and Brennan Ney, of Ubly, Joshua and Jeffrey Ney, of Bad Axe, and Korri Barnes, of North Port, Florida; three sisters, Betty Graham and Katherine Smith, both of Fort Gratiot, and Anne Kling, of Bad Axe. Two brothers, Joseph and Matt Ney; and one grandson, Jason Ratliff, preceded him in death. A memorial service for John J. Ney will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 19, 2004, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. The Rev. James Carlson, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friday, June 18, 2004 Arthur Cook Mr. Arthur Cook, 89, of Parisville, passed away Thursday morning, June 17, 2004, at his residence under hospice care. Art was born May 30, 1915 in Parisville to the late Anthony and Martha (Kowalski) Cook. He married Margaret Hunsanger on September 9, 1944 at St. John's Church in West Dearborn. She preceded him in death on April 21, 2002. Art was a graduate of St. Mary Elementary School. He then worked with his father at Cook's Grocery. He worked in Lansing for the State of Michigan Foreign Title Department. He was postmaster in Ruth for a few years. He also worked at Willow Run Airplane Plant. He owned and operated Cook's Grocery from 1945 to 1963. During this time, he also drove school buses for St. Mary Elementary School. Art was a bank courier for City Transfer for 30 years, receiving the Million Mile Safety Award. He was a senior member of the Paris Township Board of Review. He was a third degree member of the Ruth Knights of Columbus Council 3823. He was a parishioner at St. Mary Catholic Church in Parisville, where he was a Eucharistic Minister and a member of the Men's Club. Art loved driving, feeding and watching birds, and music. He loved traveling, especially the two trips he took to Hawaii. He also loved his grandchildren with all his heart. Art is survived by three daughters, Julianne Cook, of Midland, Noreen Donnellon and her husband, James, of Minden City, Susan Swartz and her husband, William, of Howell; four sons, Anthony Cook and his special friend, Cathy McDonald, of Bay City, Charles Cook, of Chicago, Timothy Cook, of Grosse Pointe Woods, Joseph Cook and his wife, Andra, of Howell; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. Art was preceded in death by one sister, Beatrice Mitch. Funeral mass will be 11 a.m. on Monday, June 21, 2004, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Parisville. The Rev. Marcella Deeg Mrs. Marcella Marie Deeg, 70, of Unionville, passed away Tuesday, June 15, 2004. She was born in Iowa City, Iowa on December 21, 1933, the daughter of Lester and Carrie (Hines) Coonfare. She married Gerald Meyer who preceded her in death July 8, 1988. Marcella married Harold Deeg in Iowa on November 2, 1996. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Guttenberg, Iowa and its St. Anne's Society. She was also a member of the American Legion, Amvets, and enjoyed doing volunteer work, mostly with community affairs. During her younger years, she assisted on the family farm. Surviving along with her husband, Harold, are their children, Allan Meyer and his wife, Jackie, of Alkader, Iowa, Vincent Meyer and his wife, Carol, Merl Meyer and his wife, Doris, all of Osterdock, Iowa, Marlene Hefel and her husband, Kurt, of Holy Cross, Iowa, Neal Meyer and his wife, Cindy, of Colseburg, Iowa, Bill Deeg, of Caseville, Sue Ahearn and her husband, John, of Bad Axe, Lee Deeg and his wife, Marci, of Forester, Ann Manial and her husband, Andy, of Elkton, Christine Legrand and her husband, Todd, Valerie Meyer, John Beck and his wife, Kara, all of Guttenberg, Iowa; son-in-law, Lennie Beck, of Garnville, Iowa, Melynda Deeg, of Saginaw, and Harold Deeg, Jr. and his wife, Leanne, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 35 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Ruth Coonfare. Yvonne Dufty Yvonne Dufty, 67, of Bay Port, died Thursday, June 17, 2004, at St. Mary's Regional Medical Center in Saginaw following a lengthy illness. She was born December 9, 1936 in Bay Port, daughter of the late Raleigh and Lucinda (Gotham) Wise. She was united in marriage to Charles William Dufty, Sr. on June 6, 1952 in Bay Port. He preceded her in death on February 3, 2002. Yvonne was a member of Faith Bible Baptist Church near Bay Port. She enjoyed cooking and also loved playing with her grandchildren. Surviving are five sons and their spouses, Charles O. Dufty, Terry and Vickie Dufty, Chris and Karen Dufty, all of Bay Port, David and Kelly Dufty, of Sebewaing, Mark and Sherrie Dufty of Palmyra; 14 grandchildren; one sister, Naomi and Bud Steadman, of Bad Axe; one brother, Richard and Beverly Wise, of Pigeon; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by an infant brother, Raymond. The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 21, 2004, at Faith Bible Baptist Church, corner of M-25 and Haist Road. The Rev. Phillip Parkin will officiate with burial in New Bay Port Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, from 1 to 9 p.m. on Sunday at the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing, and she will lie in state from 10 a.m. on Monday until the time of service at the church. Ila D. Klee Mrs. Ila D. Klee, 80, of Ruth, passed away Thursday, June 17, 2004, at her residence. Ila was born June 26, 1923 in Sherman Township to the late Daniel and Jenny (Emling) Piper. She married Leo Klee on March 23, 1946 in Detroit. Ila attended Helena Country School and was a graduate of Harbor Beach High School. She was a parishioner at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ruth and a member of the Christian Mothers. She enjoyed fishing with her grandchildren, gardening, baking, bird watching, and spending time with her family. She was an avid reader and enjoyed crossword puzzles. Ila is survived by her husband of 58 years, Leo, of Ruth; one daughter, Gloria Bischer, of Munger; four sons, Gordon Klee and his wife, Marlene, of Harbor Beach, Sid Klee and his wife, Monika, of Ruth, Dave Klee and his wife, Cindy, of Harbor Beach, Allen Klee and his wife, Donna, of Harbor Beach; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister, Lois Rapson, of Emmett; one brother, Charles Piper, of Harbor Beach. Funeral mass will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 20, 2004, at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ruth. The Rev. Steven Gavit, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 9 p.m. today, from 1 to 9 p.m. on Saturday at Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home of Ubly, and from 1 to 2 p.m. on Sunday at the church. There will be a Christian Mothers rosary at 7:30 p.m. today and a parish vigil service at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday by Fr. Steve Gavit. Both services will be at the funeral home. Bernice M. Rogers Bernice M. Rogers, 76, life long resident of Marlette, passed away Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at Gratiot Community Hospital in Alma. She was born July 28, 1927 in Detroit, daughter to the late Earl and Mary (Franzel) Boddy. She graduated from Marlette High School in 1945 and attended MSU and Mary Grove College. She married Donald "Bud" Rogers on June 12, 1948 in Clifford. He preceded her in death on February 23, 1987. Mrs. Rogers was a member of the St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Marlette. She is survived by a son, Randy Rogers and his wife, Jane, of East Lansing; daughter, Renee Shaver and her husband, Bernie, of Elwell; grandchildren, Allison Shaver, of Plymouth, Kimberly (Hopeton) Prendergast, of Grand Rapids, Alexander James Rogers, of East Lansing; great-grandson, Connor Prendergast, of Grand Rapids; sister, Norma Jean Batkie and her husband, Frank, of Frankenmuth. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and grandson, Todd Albert Shaver. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 19, 2004, in the St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Marlette, with Fr. Richard Bokinskie officiating. Burial will be in the Marlette Cemetery in Marlette. Casket bearers are Allison Shaver, Kimberly Prendergast, Bob Lambert, John Lambert, Randy Taylor, Andrea Sargent and Alexander James Rogers. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today at the Marsh Funeral Chapel in Marlette and from noon until the time of service on Saturday at the church.
