Sunday, September 19, 2004 Donna Boyce Donna Boyce, 51, of Bad Axe, passed away on Saturday, September 18, 2004, at Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe. She was born on January 2, 1953 in Cass City, daughter of the late Frederick and Ann (Koreck) Freeman. She married Charles Boyce on April 4, 1970 in Akron, Michigan. She was the head cook for the Bad Axe Senior Citizen Meal Site. She enjoyed playing bingo and collecting porcelain dolls. She is survived by her husband, Charles Boyce, of Bad Axe; two sons, Dennis Boyce and his wife, Michelle, of Filion, and Brian Boyce and his wife, Roena, of Bad Axe; two daughters, Alice Boyce, of Bad Axe, and Carolyn Boyce and her friend, Larry Howey, of Bad Axe; four brothers, Rick Freeman and his wife, Mary, of Bad Axe, Robert Freeman, of Akron, Victor Freeman and his wife, Pam, of Akron, and William Freeman and his wife, Kimberly, of Caro; four sisters, Leann Freeman, of Caro, Tina Hutchinson and her friend, Milton Schmitt, Jr., of Akron, Merrie Freeman, of Bad Axe, and Jacqueline Freeman and her friend, Matt Clark, of Akron; nine grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and her special best friend, Deb Butcher, of Bad Axe. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Gary, Kenneth and David Freeman. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, September 21, 2004, at the Kaufman Funeral Home in Bad Axe. Burial will be in Colfax Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. on Monday, and from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Tuesday at the funeral home. Franklin Flannery Franklin L. Flannery, 68, a native of Bad Axe, passed away on Friday, August 20, 2004, at Silver Cross Hospital, Joliet, Illinois. He was the son of the late Patrick and Helen (Donner) Flannery. Frank was born June 20, 1936 at Bad Axe. Mr. Flannery graduated from Elkton High School, Class of 1954, participated in football and track and was elected class president during his junior year. He was selected first team halfback on the all-area Class C honor team by the Saginaw News in 1952. He also received the Northern Thumb C Conference first team all-conference award that same year. He served honorably in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. After his service, he attended Central Michigan University. He is survived by two sisters, Patricia M. Flannery Pratt and her husband, Dewey, of Vero Beach, Florida, and Marilyn A. Flannery Roelofs and her husband, Richard, of Saco, Maine; several nieces and nephews, Maurice J. Flannery, II, Kittie Flannery Graf, Elizabeth A. Flannery Dunn, Michelle R. Roelofs Lesperance and Mary M. Griggs; and numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Maurice J. Flannery and Delphus J. Flannery, one sister, Corrine M. Flannery Griggs and a nephew, Thomas W. Flannery. Mass of Resurrection will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, September 21, 2004, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe with Fr. James Carlson, Pastor, officiating. Memorial contributions may be offered to the Family Discretionary Fund for the Veteran's Home. Dorothy L. Gemmill Dorothy L. Gemmill, 76, of Lake Township near Oak Beach, died Friday afternoon, September 17, 2004, at her home while under hospice care. She was born July 3, 1928 in Warren at the home of her parents, the late Ralph and Lena (Jewell) Craft. Dorothy was a 1946 graduate of Lincoln High School and remained very active with the alumni association. On October 2, 1948, she was united in marriage to Richard C. Gemmill at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Warren. They raised their family in Warren and moved to Lake Township in 1990. She had been employed at Children's Hospital, Detroit, as the business office manager, retiring in 1996 with 14 years of service. She was a member of Cross Lutheran Church and the Caseville Library Club, member and past president of the Caseville Eagles Auxiliary. Surviving are her husband, Richard, two daughters, Constance VanWieren and her husband, Tom, of Rapid City, and Nancy Lafferty, of Troy; two granddaughters, Megan and Emily VanWieren; two brothers, Harry Craft and his wife, Amelia, of Surprise Arizona, and Robert Craft and his wife, June, of Rochester; her sister, Betty Sikorski, and her husband, Joe, of Huntersville, North Carolina. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Hazel Hendry and Rachel Cagle. Patty G. Hatfield Patty G. Hatfield, 42, of Flint and formerly of Corbin, Kentucky, died Wednesday, September 15, 2004, in McLaren Regional Medical Center in Flint after a short illness. Mrogik, 45, of Lake Township near Oak Beach, died Friday morning, September 17, 2004, at Huron Medical Center following a massive heart attack. He was born October 30, 1958 at Mt. Carmel Hospital, Detroit, to the late Carl and Elene (Dimitri) Mrogik. Danny was a bump and paint auto repairman by trade; he had also worked the campaign at Michigan Sugar the past seven years. He had move to Lake Township permanently in 1998, but had been coming to the area since 1980. On August 30, 2002, he was united in marriage to Mary F. Leckenby in Bad Axe. Surviving are his wife, Mary; a daughter, Jayme; a stepson, Jacob Moore; two sisters, Frances Lenczewski and her husband, Mel, of Sycamore, Illinois, and Cindy Nesbitt and her husband, Bill, of Livonia; two nieces; two nephews; a great niece and a great nephew. She was born on October 10, 1909 in Port Austin, daughter of the late Frank and Jennie (Horetski) Yaroch. She married Anthony Baranski on November 23, 1938 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin. He preceded her in death on July 16, 2003. Viola was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin. She loved her flowers and spending time with her family and friends. She is survived by two daughters, Connie Baranski, of Port Austin and Barbara Allen and her husband, Vern, of Munising; one granddaughter, Cheryl Allen, of Ypsilanti; two sisters, Josephine and Genevieve Yaroch, both of Port Austin; brother, Lewis Yaroch, of Bad Axe; and several nieces and nephews. Viola was preceded in death by three sisters, Florence O'Connor, Gertrude Krease, and Nellie Yaroch; three brothers, Albert, Edwin, and Paul Yaroch. Carol Jean Steinbis Carol Jean Steinbis, 60, of Colfax Township, passed away on Saturday, September 18, 2004, at Hills and Dales General Hospital. She was born March 20, 1944 in Bad Axe, daughter of Charlotte (Perdue) Sherman. She was united in marriage to Arnold Steinbis in 1961. Carol was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Bad Axe. She was a graduate of Bad Axe High School. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, playing cards, working puzzles and most of all, enjoyed visiting with family and friends. She is survived by three sons, Gerald Steinbis and his wife, Beverly, of Bad Axe, George Steinbis and his wife, Joann, of Bad Axe, Brian Steinbis and his wife, Brenda, of Bad Axe; one daughter, Marilyn Boks, of Bay City; her mother, Charlotte Sherman; two brothers, Glenn Sherman, of Detroit, and Grant Sherman and his wife, Pam, of Sylvan Lake; one sister, Sandra Frechette and her husband, Mark, of Mason; ten grandchildren, Justin Ackerman, Amanda, Melissa, Thomas, and Jonathan Steinbis, Krystle Boks, Kristie and Kyle Arntz, and Nathan and Alyssa Steinbis; three great-grandchildren, Kendrick Johnson, Hailey and Jenna Arntz and several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Joseph Konkel. Hessling, 49, of Ruth, passed away Monday, September 20, 2004, at her residence under hospice care. She was born February 8, 1955 in Sandusky to the late Donald L. and Isabell (Hodgins) Sample. She married James A. Hessling on June 1, 1987 in Bad Axe. Charlotte attended Sandusky High School. She worked for Midwest Rubber Company in Deckerville for twelve years. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Parisville. She enjoyed bowling, golf, feeding and watching the birds, camping, fishing, playing cards, vacations, and her family. Charlotte is survived by her husband, James, of Ruth; three sons, Daniel J. Hessling and his wife, Karen L., of Bad Axe, Jamie H. Hessling, of Ruth, Aaron J. Hessling, of Kinde; one daughter, Kelsey B. Hessling, of Ruth; two brothers, Heman T. Sample, of Port Huron, and Donald R. Sample, of Sandusky; four sisters, Phyllis L. Stephanie Jill Holben Stephanie Jill Holben, 41, of Alpena, passed away suddenly Tuesday, September 14, 2004, at her home. Stephanie was born on February 1, 1963 in Caseville to Ralph Ross and the late Zella (Allen) Ross. She and Richard Holben were married on May 11, 2002 at Grace Lutheran Church of Alpena by the Rev. Owen Williams. She was a care provider for North East Michigan Mental Health and a loving mother to her son, Allan. Stephanie enjoyed living life to the fullest. Stephanie is survived by her loving husband, Richard; her infant son, Allan, born June 9, 2004; her father, Ralph Ross, of Bellaire; one brother, Ralph Ross and his wife, Molly, of Caseville; her father and mother-in-law, Carl and Beverly Holben, of Alpena; her two sisters-in-law, Dawn and Shari; and several nieces and nephews. Haughton Beverly Shepler Haughton, 67, of Cass City, died Saturday, September 18, 2004, in Marlette Community Hospital Hospice Residence. She was born August 13, 1937 in Rochester, New York to Harold W. and Biena V. (Dokter) Shepler. She married Thomas J. Haughton on June 29, 1957 in Gates, New York. Beverly was an officer and member of both the Junior Service Club and Welcome Wagon in Collinsville, Illinois. She was a member, secretary, elder, and deacon at Cass City First Presbyterian Church and churches in towns she lived in prior to moving to Cass City. Beverly enjoyed traveling. She and Tom had been doing a great deal of that since 1991. She had been in every state in the Union except Alaska, and visited many other countries. She was a member of the Lake Huron Sweet Adelines and was a former Girl Scout Troop Leader. She enjoyed golfing, painting, sewing, gardening, needlework, singing, skiing, camping, and traveling. Beverly loved life and wanted it celebrated. "God has given me a loving and devoted husband and children for which I have been grateful, and I am also grateful for the gift of many truly good friends." Beverly is survived by her husband, Tom; children, Bradley T. Haughton and his wife, Virginia, of Boise, Idaho, Brenda Haughton and her husband, Mark, of Marine, Illinois; grandchildren, Cathryn Haughton, Bond Mangum; brother, Harold M. Shepler and his wife, Edna, of Carlysle, Pennsylvania.; nephews, Steven Shepler and his wife, Kim, of Cincinnati, Ohio, Martin Shepler and his wife, Maria, of Topeka, Kansas, Robert Shepler and his wife, Susanna, of Carlysle, Pennsylvania.; niece, Joyce Rolar and her husband, Joel, of Carlysle, Pennsylvania.; sister-in-law and her family, Ninalee Caswell and her husband, Robert, of Hilton, New York; a great aunt, who is 102 years old, Martha Vivian Robinson. Snover, 89, of Harbor Beach, passed away Tuesday, September 21, 2004, in the long term care unit of the Harbor Beach Community Hospital. Marguerite was born on November 10, 1914 to the late William and Julia (Kramer) Karl. She married Wesley Snover on February 2, 1942 in Pigeon. Wesley preceded her in death on May 17, 1997. Marguerite loved visiting and baking. She is survived by her two sons, Karl Snover and his wife, Michelle, of Walnut Creek, California, and William Snover, of Harbor Beach; two grandchildren, Guy and Megan. She was preceded in death by a sister, Theresa Karl. Funeral Mass for Marguerite will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 25, 2004, in the Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church. Fr. Steve Gavit, of Ss. Peter and Paul Church in Ruth, will officiate. Burial to follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight, from 1 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday in the Ramsey Funeral Home, Harbor Beach, and from 9 a.m. until time of services on Saturday at the church. A vigil service will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Friday in the funeral home. Beulah Adams Beulah McDonnell Adams, 93, of Bloomington, Indiana, passed away on Tuesday, September 21, 2004, at a Hospitality House. A memorial service will be conducted at a later date. MacAlpine Funeral Home of Bad Axe is handling the arrangements. A complete obituary will appear in the Huron Daily Tribune at a later date. Friday, September 24, 2004 Ret. Cmdr Robert W. Krause Ret. Commander Robert W. Krause, 78, of Pensacola, Florida and formerly of Harbor Beach, died Thursday, September 16, 2004, from injuries as a result of Hurricane Ivan, in Pensacola, Florida. He was born March 19, 1926 in Harbor Beach to the late Louis and Lenora (Pagels) Krause. Commander Krause graduated from Harbor Beach High School and Central Michigan University. On December 11, 1948, Robert and Earleen English were united in marriage in Harbor Beach. She preceded him in death on June 26, 1988. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943, received his commission as a naval aviator in 1946. During 1947 to 1952 he was on inactive duty, but was recalled during the Korean Conflict. At that time he received helicopter flight training. He was one of the first helicopter pilots who acquired one thousand flight hours. At that time he was assigned to the Navy's First Anti-Submarine Helicopter Squadron. He served as a test pilot for Bell Helicopter in Fort Worth, Texas. Later he had duties in Operations Officer in New Orleans. Cmdr. Krause retired in 1969. His last duty was officer in charge of the New York Recruiting District. Since then, a foundation was started in his name, Commander & Mrs. Robert W. Krause Foundation was established in December of 2002. Scholarships are given to graduates from Harbor Beach High School. He is survived by his sisters, Lois Phillips, of Flint, and Elva Robert Pressprick, of Largo, Florida, and many nieces and nephews. Commander Krause was preceded in death by his wife, Earleen; three brothers, Gerhardt, Orken, and Roy; and a sister, Vera Proper. Funeral services will be conducted at noon on Tuesday, September 28, 2004, at the Ramsey Funeral Home in Harbor Beach with the Rev. Mark Girardin officiating. A military graveside services will follow at the Rock Falls Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday and from 11 a.m. until time of services on Tuesday at the funeral home. A scripture service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the Grice Historical Museum, Harbor Beach Area District Library, and Zion Lutheran Church. Robert Klawon Mr. Robert Klawon, 85, of Caseville, passed away Thursday, September 23, 2004, at Courtney Manor of Bad Axe. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, September 27, 2004, at St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church in Pigeon. Arrangements are being handled by the Smigielski Funeral Home of Minden City. 1
