Sunday, February 22, 2004 Bernard Heilig Bernard Heilig, 84, of Cass City, died Friday, February 20, 2004, at Hills and Dales General Hospital in Cass City. He was born January 21, 1920 in Minden City to the late William and Margaret (Oswald) Heilig. He married Josephine Pryka in Frankenmuth on October 11, 1987. Bernie enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and telling incredible stories. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II as a fire chief in India. He also was part of a task force that guarded the Memphis Belle. Mr. Heilig is survived by his wife, Josephine Heilig; a daughter, Diane Bodner and her husband, Louis; a son, Gary Heilig and his wife, Elizabeth; stepdaughters, Kathleen Bitterman, Debra Waddell, Donna Wilkins, Elizabeth Rammal and her husband, Sam, Rose Frew and her husband, Rob; grandchildren, Jim Bodner and his wife, Heidi, Tammy Bodner, Deanna Lincoln and her husband, Gary, Courtney Heilig, Robert Heilig; step grandchildren, Kristen, Cristopher and Kristi Singleton, Steven Waddell, Amy and Olivia Grima, Saphie, Sarrah and Summar Rammal, Seth, Solomon, Samson, Shadarach and Sila Frew; great- grandchildren, Jessica and Miranda, Michael, Jesse and Nicholas Bodner, and Dante Singleton; brothers and sisters, Clarence Heilig, Mark Heilig, Gert Cerveny and her husband, Sam, Ralph Heilig and his wife, Jean, Katheren Stewart, Bernard's twin brother, Ben Heilig and his wife, Odelia, Jeneve Mitoff, Beatrice Drake, Bill Heilig and his wife, Doreen, Nick Heilig, Winifred Sageman, Wilfred Heilig and his wife, Pat, Gerald Heilig and his wife, Fran, Jeanette Heilig, Harold Heilig and his wife, Darlene, Lucy Hintz and her husband, Kenneth, Regina Koglin and her husband, Gerald; and many nieces and nephews. Janet Heron Janet Heron, 90, of Caseville, died Friday evening, February 20, 2004, with her family at her side at Sunny Acres Nursing Center near Bad Axe. She was born November 22, 1913 in Armadale, Scotland, and moved to the Detroit area as a little girl with her parents, the late John and Janet (Ramage) Cook. On March 27, 1937, she was united in marriage to Thomas C. Heron in Pontiac. They moved to Caseville in 1963, where her husband was co-founder of Walsh Sheet Metal. He preceded her in death on June 8, 1989. Mrs. Heron was a member of the Caseville United Methodist Church and enjoyed spending time in the kitchen, cooking and baking. She also liked tending to her garden and enjoyed spending time with her friends and family. Surviving are three daughters, Joyce D'Alessandro and her husband, Gena, of Lapeer, Arlene Nance and her husband, Jim, of Caseville, and Linda Vaal and her husband, Tony, of Bloomfield Hills; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were two sisters, Charlotte Boal and Margaret Lively. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 24, 2004, at the Champagne Funeral Chapel, Caseville, with burial in the Caseville Township Cemetery. Beatrice Hundersmarck Beatrice Clara Hundersmarck, 82, of Bad Axe, died Friday, February 20, 2004, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. She was born November 17, 1921, daughter of the late Charles and Marnie (Oldenberg) Britt. She was married to Hubert Hundersmarck in July 1943 in Pontiac. He preceded her in death in 1971. Beatrice enjoyed crocheting, jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles, playing cards, bowling and visiting with her family. Beatrice is survived by three sons, Ron Hundersmarck, Fred Hundersmarck and his wife, Pat, David Hundersmarck and his wife, Charlene; a daughter, Barbara Izzo; a stepdaughter, Greta Davidson; a sister, Marguerite Schenk; grandchildren, Troy, Aaron and Jeff Hundersmarck, Kori Kotter, Don, James, John and David Clark, Tim and Jason Hodges, Laura, Kristie, Mary, and Phoebe Izzo, Todd, Chad, Stacy, Autumn and Charles Hundersmarck; 20 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Monday, February 23, 2004 – Presidents Day Holiday Tuesday, February 24, 2004 Joseph Clavenna Joseph Louis Clavenna, 82, of Bad Axe, died Sunday, February 22, 2004, at Genesys Hospice, Goodrich, after a short illness. He was born December 18, 1921 in Detroit, son of the late Louis and Marie (Miramonti) Clavenna. Joseph Clavenna and Helen Cook were married October 23, 1965 in Mt. Clemens. She preceded him in death on November 17, 1977. He was co-owner of Gibraltar Manufacturing, Port Huron, retiring in 1977, and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Surviving are one daughter, Lisa Seres and her husband, Steven, of Metamora; three grandchildren, Kareen Marie Seres, Nathan James Seres, and Sarah Schmirl; one step-son, Charles Chewning and his wife, Debra, of El Paso, Texas; one step-daughter, Cynthia Schmirl, of Fredericksburg, Virginia; and three sisters, Donna Long, of Shelby Township, Geraldine Calvenna and Lois Calvenna, both of Rochester. Ruth Dronsella Ruth D. Dronsella, 82, of Sebewaing, died Sunday, February 22, 2004, at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe following a two-year illness. She was born January 2, 1922 in Brookfield Township, daughter of the late Rudolph and Frieda (Neu) Wissner. She was united in marriage to Walter Dronsella on May 10, 1942 in Kilmanagh. He preceded her in death on April 15, 2003. Ruth was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Kilmanagh. Surviving are two daughters, Virginia Toman and her husband, Richard, of Royal Oak, Mabel Knowlton and her husband, Cedric, of Zephyrhills, Florida; three sons, Daryl Dronsella and his wife, Joy, of Jefferson City, Tennessee, Arthur Dronsella and his wife, Carol, of Gagetown, Dennis Dronsella and his wife, Marjorie, of West Bloomfield; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Victor Wissner and his wife, Christine, Arnold Wissner and his wife, Esther, all of Sebewaing; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers; Roland Wissner and Harold Wissner; three sisters, Irene Leiterman, Gertrude Wissner and Luella Wissner. Kosal, 91, of Harbor Beach, passed away on Monday, February 23, 2004, in the long term care unit of the Harbor Beach Community Hospital. Born in Harbor Beach on July 11, 1912, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary (Kociba) Lemanski. Esther and Karl Kosal were united in marriage on June 20, 1936 in Harbor Beach. He preceded her in death in May of 1997. She was a member of Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach. Esther is survived by her children: Diana Wisienski and her husband, Ed, of Carsonville, Ruth Ann Girard and her husband, Frank, of Deckerville, and John Kosal and his wife, Joanne, of Louisiana; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Rose Henwood, of Harbor Beach. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Monica Fealko, Lucy and Martha Lemanski; brothers, Herman, Alex, Earl and Sylvester Lemanski. Elizabeth Kretzschmer Elizabeth I. Kretzschmer, 87, of Owendale, passed away Sunday, February 22, 2004, at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon. She was born in Grandon, Missouri on March 10, 1916, daughter of the late Louis and Katy (Pavlichek) Kovach. On March 31, 1937, she was united in marriage to Lloyd A. Kretzschmer in Owendale. He preceded her in death on July 13, 1989. Mrs. Kretzschmer was a member of the Owendale United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. Along with her husband, Lloyd, she enjoyed traveling and was active in many community activities. She also enjoyed gardening and bowling, but especially being with her family. She was a homemaker throughout her lifetime. Her survivors include a daughter, Joyce Goodman and her husband, Robert, of Grand Ledge; a son, Charles Kretzschmer, of Owendale; five grandchildren, Michael Goodman and his wife, Dianne, Christopher Goodman and his wife, Pamela, Mardi Pavlichek and her husband, Christopher, Dr. Bradi Boyce and her husband, Dr. Brent, and Kelly Gruber and her husband, William; five great-grandchildren, Sam and Lindsay Goodman, Blake and Brock Gruber, and Kinsey Pavlichek; three step-great- grandchildren, Matthew, David, and Dillon; a sister, Katherine Finkbeiner, of Pigeon; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary and Esther; three brothers, Michael, Louis, and Alex; and a daughter-in-law Geraldine Kretzschmer. Lohrmann, 95, of Sebewaing, died Saturday, February 21, 2004, at The Lutheran Home in Frankenmuth following a brief illness. She was born March 17, 1908 in Mecklenburg, Germany, daughter of the late William and Emma (Lubstorf) Sievert. She was united in marriage to Carl Lohrmann on March 22, 1958 in Sebewaing. He preceded her in death on August 25, 1984. Ella was a member of the Sebewaing Assembly of God Church. She enjoyed fishing. Surviving are two sons, Harold Bierschbach, of Hemlock, William Bierschbach and his wife, Ruth, of Frankenmuth; two step-daughters, Virginia Mill, of Sebewaing, Margaret Edler and her husband, Fred, of Pigeon; one step- son, Carl Lohrmann, Jr. and his wife, Sadie, of North Carolina; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren. He was born in Wise County, Virginia on July 18, 1913. He married Anna Torma on April 15, 1936. After 67 years of marriage, she survives her husband and resides in Youngtown, Arizona. They were originally farmers of Unionville. Frank and Anna moved to Youngtown, Arizona in 1984. Frank was a member of the Moose Lodge No. 2243, Glendale, Arizona, Elks Lodge USA No. 2559, Sun City, Arizona, American Legion Post No. 62, The Senior Polka Association of Arizona, and the Polish American Club of Arizona. Frank is also survived by two sons, Richard, of Sun City, Arizona and Donald, of Joplin, Missouri; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. Frank will be missed by family and friends. Services will be private. Lloyd Smoot Lloyd M. Smoot, 74, of Charlotte, North Carolina, passed away on Thursday, February 19, 2004, at Lake Park Nursing Home in Indian Trails, North Carolina, after a long illness. Lloyd was born May 15, 1929 in Pontiac, son of the late Charles and Marion (Bills) Smoot. He married Janet M. Shagena on June 14, 1958 at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Freiburg. Lloyd served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953 in Colorado and Alaska. He retired from Pontiac Motor Division in 1978 after 31 years of service. He was a member of Eagles Lodge No. 1230 and Moose Lodge No. 182 in Pontiac, and a member of St. John Nuemann Catholic Church in Charlotte, North Carolina. The love of his life, second only to his devotion to his family, was his love of music. He was an accomplished guitar player, singer and song writer who loved country music. His other passions were bike riding, taking long walks and being with his children and grandchildren. A genuine family man in every sense of the word, his needs were always second to everyone else. He is survived by his wife, Janet; one daughter, Sharon Allen and her husband, David, of Charlotte, North Carolina; one son, Wayne Smoot and his wife, Marjorie, of Grand Blanc; five grandchildren, Tara, Daniel and Ryan, of North Carolina, and Caitlin and Evan, of Grand Blanc; one great-granddaughter, Aryanna, of North Carolina; and one brother, Bill Smoot, of Harrison. He was preceded in death by one sister, Donna; and three brothers, Evan, Reed and Warren Smoot. Wednesday, February 25, 2004 Keith Duerr Keith "Fuzz" Duerr, 76, of Ocala, Florida and formerly of Bad Axe, died Saturday, February 21, 2004, in his home under hospice care. He was born August 1, 1927 in Bad Axe to the late Carl and Cecelia Duerr. He and Viola Roehrs, of Kinde, were married on September 5, 1951 in Warren by her brother, the Rev. Edward Roehrs. She preceded her husband in death on September 27, 2003. Keith graduated from Bad Axe High School in 1945 and served two years in the U.S. Army in Biloxi, Mississippi. Upon his discharge, he went to work for L.E. Meyers Co. in the Jackson, Detroit, Chicago, and Longview, Texas areas and two years in Saudi Arabia. He retired to Florida in 1988 where he enjoyed golfing and yard work. He also worked part time as a guard at Laurel Run Community. Surviving are two sisters, Elva Heyd and her husband, Clinton, of Baldwin, June Edwards and her husband, Glenn, of Bad Axe; foster brother, Larry Essenmacher and his wife, Carole, of Vassar; three nieces, Bonnie Edwards, Sally Sloat and Janet Staten; four nephews, Jim and Bob Heyd, Randy Edwards and David Essenmacher. Betty King Betty M. King, 80, of Bad Axe, passed away on Monday, February 23, 2004, at McLaren Hospital in Flint. She was born on February 20, 1924 in Verona, daughter of the late Samuel and Mabel Burke. She married James E. King. He preceded her in death on April 23, 1987. Mrs. King was a member of the Bad Axe First Presbyterian Church where she was a longtime treasurer, a member of the Finance Committee and a member of the Leah Circle. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Cass City Lodge. Surviving are two sons, David King and his wife, Sharon, of Hemlock, Bruce King, of Bad Axe; five grandchildren, Brian King and his wife, Alissa, of Bad Axe, Jason King, of Hemlock, Patrick King, of Bad Axe, Craig King, of Hemlock, and Stephen King, of Bad Axe. She was preceded in death by one brother, George I. Burke; and one sister, Mildred "Millie" Schumacher. Thursday, February 26, 2004 John Carriveau John Henry Carriveau, 84, of Bad Axe, passed away on Wednesday, February 25, 2004, at the Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe. He was born on October 6, 1919 in Meade Township, son of the late Joseph H. and Theresa (Steinetz) Carriveau. He married Genevieve Lewandowski on May 22, 1943 in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. She preceded him in death on January 6, 2000. Mr. Carriveau was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Michigan Farm Bureau. He was retired from the former Universal Engineering in Bad Axe. He enjoyed going to the Bad Axe Senior Citizens Meal Site, being at his daughter's and son-in-law's farm, activities with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, tinkering in woodworking and taking up cooking later in life. Doris Cook Mrs. Doris Cook, 99, of Minden City, passed away Monday night, February 23, 2004, at Huron Medical Care Facility of Bad Axe. Doris was born May 27, 1904 in Parisville to the late Matthew and Josephine (Zmich) Susalla. She married Irvin Cook and he preceded her in death on May 30, 1931. She married Gaylord Cook on October 12, 1940 in Detroit. He preceded her in death on August 9, 1981. Doris attended Sand Beach School. She was employed as an auto assembler at Plymouth Car Factory in Detroit and Clements Wire Cable in Minden City. She worked as a switchboard operator at Deaconess Hospital in Detroit. She was a parishioner at St. Mary Catholic Church in Parisville. She enjoyed playing bingo, crocheting, playing cards and loved to attend area festivals. Doris is survived by two sons, Robert Cook, of Minden City, Irvin Cook, of Tavares, Florida; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Gladys Cook and her husband, Philip, of Harbor Beach. She was preceded in death by 11 brothers and sisters. A funeral mass will be on Monday, March 1, 2004, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church in Parisville. The Rev. There will be a parish vigil service at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. Jerry DuBois Jerry H. DuBois, 72, of Sebewaing, passed away on Monday, February 23, 2004. He was born February 17, 1932 in Detroit to the late Edgar and Florence DuBois. Mr. DuBois was former owner of Auburn Metalfab, Inc., Vice President of Scenic Golf & Country Club in Pigeon, past President of the Oakland Hunt Club and a life member of Rochester B.P.O.E. No. 2225. He was very patriotic and was an avid golfer and sportsman. He is survived by his wife, Linda Lee DuBois; two sons, Jeffrey S. DuBois and his wife, Debi, John G. DuBois and his wife, Suzanne; step-daughters, Kristin M. Phillips and her husband, Chris, and Kimberlee R. Meyers; grandchildren, Angela, Jamie, Lindsay, Sarah, Aimee DuBois and Sidnee Phillips. Beatrice Woycik Miss Beatrice Woycik, 81, of rural Parisville, beloved sister, godmother and friend, passed away Tuesday morning, February 24, 2004, at Courtney Manor of Bad Axe following a brief illness. Beatrice was born July 30, 1922 in Paris Township, Huron County, where she resided for 50 years of her life. She was the daughter of the late Thomas L. and Ida (Wodwaski) Woycik. Beatrice attended the Duda School in Sigel Township and graduated from the Grace School in Paris Township. She was employed at Chrysler Corporation in Detroit from 1942 until she retired in 1973 after 31 years of service. She was a lifelong member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Parisville and the Holy Rosary Sodality of the church. She was a member of the Bad Axe Daughters of Isabella Fidelis Regina Circle No. 608. She was an ardent enthusiast of the casino. She enjoyed playing euchre in several card clubs in the Parisville area. Her favorite bingo spot was at Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach on Sunday evenings with her friends. She enjoyed polka music to the utmost. Her greatest joy was listening to television game shows and working on dictionary crossword puzzles. She enjoyed gardening and cooking Polish recipes. She was a beloved godmother to several. Beatrice is survived by one brother, Thomas Woycik, of Parisville; one aunt, Mrs. Emma Wodwaski, of Ubly; and many cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Joseph, in 1982, and Frank, in 1989. A funeral mass will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 28, 2004, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Parisville. The Rev. Andrzej Boroch, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery in the spring. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 9 p.m. today, 3 to 9 p.m. on Friday, and from 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home of Ubly. There will be a joint rosary at 8 p.m. today by St. Mary Men's Club and Rosary Sodality. There will also be a rosary at 8:30 p.m. on Friday by the Daughters of Isabella Fidelis Circle No. 608.
