She was born in Pemberville, Ohio on August 2, 1912 to Henry and Mary (Aufderstrausse) Smearsoll. She married Albert Avers on June 14, 1934 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Pemberville, Ohio and he survives. Anna had worked at Zips Cafeteria in Woodville, Ohio for 10 years, baking pies and rolls, before retiring in 1975. She was an active member of Solomon Lutheran Church in Woodville, Ohio, and helped in the kitchen preparing meals for Kiwanis and other occasions. Anna also quilted with the Dorcas Circle and was active with the women's group of the church. In her spare time, Anna loved to work in her garden, canning, freezing, enjoyed sewing, and had volunteered at the Luther Home of Mercy for over 20 years. Surviving along with Anna's husband are two sons: Robert Avers and his wife, Joyce, of Pickerington, Ohio; and Paul Avers, of St. Paris, Ohio; two daughters: Marilyn Buchholz and her husband, Gerald, of Harbor Beach; Shirley McKinniss and her husband, Douglas, of Findlay, Ohio; one brother: Paul Smearsoll, of Pemberville, Ohio; two sisters: Eloise Duncan, of Pemberville, Ohio and Esther Avers, of Elmore, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her parents and infant grandson, Theodore. He was born in Buffalo, New York on September 14, 1915 to the late Andrew and Bertha Hopka. He was a World War II veteran and a member of the Knights of Columbus in Detroit, St. Fancis Borgia Catholic Church in Pigeon, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Carpenter-Dorsch #6013 Post in Elkton. He retired from the Chrysler Corporation in 1977. He is survived by eight nieces and nephews: Sidney and Betty Hurlburt, of Elkton; Joanne and Thomas Bubar, of Shelbyville, Indiana; Susan and Larry Hackney, of Bakersfield, California; Ron and Martha Hurlburt, of Aliso Viejo, California; Henry and Carol LaCross, of Fenton; and Bill and Myra LaCross, of Redwood City, California. Robert Klawon Mr. Robert Warren Klawon, 85, of Caseville, passed away Thursday, September 23, 2004, at Courtney Manor of Bad Axe. He was born on September 24, 1918 in Minden City to the late Arthur and Hattie (Wiedel) Klawon, Sr. He married Marion A. Susalla on May 29, 1943 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Parisville. Robert was a graduate of the Linwood Country School. He was self-employed as a farmer until 1975 when he retired. He was a member at St. John Catholic Church in Forestville and was an usher there. He lived in Minden City for 57 years until he retired and moved to Caseville in 1983. He has been a member at St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church in Pigeon since 1983. He enjoyed fishing, boating, listening to Tiger baseball games and playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Robert is survived by his wife, Marion Klawon, of Caseville; one son, Mark Klawon, Sr. and his wife, Donna, of Minden City; six grandchildren, Darrin Klawon and his wife, Michelle, of Germany, Mark Klawon, Jr. of Bad Axe, Ryan, Kris, and Keri Klawon, all of Minden City, Melissa Ingles, of Lansing; three great- grandchildren, Halley, Mariah, and Chelsey Klawon; two sisters-in-law, Dorothea Klawon, of Port Huron, Virginia Leppek and her husband, Melvin, of Ubly; one brother- in-law, Elmer Susalla, of Harbor Beach. Lawrence Rivard Sr. Lawrence "Larry" Rivard, Sr., 67, of Bad Axe, passed away Thursday, September 23, 2004, at Oakwood Heritage Hospital in Taylor following an apparent heart attack. He was born on March 18, 1937 in Detroit, son of the late Francis and Esther (Kolb) Rivard. He married Patricia Vacekonis on February 11, 1956 at Holy Name Catholic Church in Detroit. He owned and operated his own trucking company for the past 21 years. He ran his dairy farm in Verona Township until 1983. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Ubly and served in the U.S. Navy. He is survived by his wife and best buddy, Patricia Rivard, of Bad Axe; two daughters: Cheryl Rice and her husband, David, of Bad Axe; and Renee Whitcomb and her husband, Edward, of Leslie; two sons: Lawrence Rivard, Jr. and his wife, Pamela, of Bad Axe; and David Rivard and his wife, Susan, of Bad Axe; one sister: Diane Malkiewicz of Lennox; 13 grandchildren: Michelle and Keith Wolschleger; David and Kelley Rice; Jaclyn, Christopher, and Rebecca Rivard; T.J. Monday, September 27, 2004 Willard William Miller Willard "Bud" William Miller, 78, of Sebewaing and formerly of Owendale, passed away on Saturday, September 25, 2004, at Bay Regional Medical Center. Willard was born October 24, 1925 in Pigeon to Edward Henry and Minnie Sylvia (Wurtz) Miller. He married Mary Ellen MacDonald on April 9, 1966 at Salem Evangelical United Brethren Church in Pigeon. Until recent years, they made their home in Owendale where they raised their five children on a 120-acre farm. In addition to farming, Willard was employed by the Michigan Sugar Company in Sebewaing for more than 30 years until his retirement in 1989. Willard was a member of Salem United Methodist Church in Pigeon, R.E.A.C.T. and the Audubon Society. He enjoyed summers at Bay Shore Camp in Sebewaing, roller skating, and was an avid fisherman. In recent years, he enjoyed spending time with his six young grandchildren. Tuesday, September 28, 2004 Elizabeth Davidge Elizabeth Davidge, 104, of Shelby Township, died Monday, September 20, 2004, at the Evangelical Home, Sterling Heights. She was born November 23, 1899 in Newfoundland, Canada. Mrs. Davidge was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening and sewing. She is survived by her children, Gwen Parrish and her husband, William, William Davidge and his wife, Mae, Alfred Davidge and his wife, Nancy, and Gerald Davidge and his wife, Gerry; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and six great- great-grandchildren. Burial was in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Detroit. Vincent Freeman Vincent Freeman, 85, of Pigeon, died Monday morning, September 27, 2004, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility, Bad Axe. He was born September 13, 1919 in Saginaw to the late Roy and Helen (Hoppe) Freeman and was a 1937 graduate of the Pigeon High School. On February 4, 1945 he was united in marriage to Grace Rounds in Pigeon, where they made their home and raised their family. Vincent retired from Pigeon Manufacturing in 1984 with over 25 years of service. He enjoyed playing checkers and gardening, giving most of the stuff he grew to his kids, family and friends. He was a member of St. Roch Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Council 8042 Caseville-Pigeon and the Pigeon Historical Society. "Pert" Schack, 86, died Sunday, September 26, 2004, at Huron County Medical Care Facility. Pert was born April 9, 1918 in a box car between Watrousville and Wahjamega (her father worked on the railroad), the daughter of Charles and Sarah (Houghtaling) Baker. She and John Schack were united in marriage on October 29, 1937. He preceded her in death on October 22, 1983. Pert was a lifelong resident of the Vassar area. After high school she was employed at Floyd Mills Ice Cream Parlor, downtown Kroger Store, the Shoemaker's Market, Vassar Dairy, and Slafter's Insurance as a secretary. She was a member of St. Lukes Lutheran Church in Vassar, and an avid Detroit Lions and Pistons fan. Mrs. Ruth was born in Dwight Township on December 27, 1917 to the late Michael and Agnes (Ignash) Inda. Miss Florence Inda and Clarence M. Ruth were united in marriage on June 25, 1937. Mr. Ruth preceded his wife in death on September 12, 1975. Florence was an active member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Port Austin, the U & I Club and the American Legion Auxiliary. Her hobbies included traveling, playing cards and bingo, and spending time with her family. Mrs. Ruth, along with her late husband, owned and operated the Port Crescent Bar and Beachcomber Motel for a number of years. Surviving are four sons, Kenneth J. Ruth and his wife, Barbara, Delbert F. Ruth and his wife, Dianne, Clarence "Chuck" M. Ruth, Jr. and his wife, Amy, all of Port Austin; William M. Wednesday, September 29, 2004 Beulah McDonnell Adams Beulah McDonnell Adams, 93, resident of Bloomington, Indiana and former resident of Bad Axe and Caseville, passed away Tuesday, September 21, 2004, in Bloomington, Indiana. She was born September 15, 1911 in Bay Port, daughter of the late John and Sarah (Steele) Haug. Miss Beulah Haug and John Kenneth "Doc" McDonnell were united in marriage on February 27, 1930 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Bad Axe. The late Fr. Leo Dorsey celebrated the wedding. Mr. McDonnell preceded his wife in death on August 16, 1974. She later married Robert Adams on February 8, 1980. He preceded his wife in death on August 31, 1985. Mrs. Adams was a homemaker, a member of the Active Senior Citizen Group in Caseville, Sacred Heart Altar Society, Bad Axe Women's Club, Bad Axe Child Study Club, volunteer for the Michigan School for the Deaf, a supporter of the Bad Axe Library and Huron County Historical Society, and was a Meals on Wheels committee member. She enjoyed dancing, sewing and visiting with her family and friends. Surviving are one daughter, Mary M. Riordan, of Indianapolis, Indiana; two sons, John L. McDonnell and his wife, Patricia M., of White Lake, Terrence J. McDonnell and his wife, Noreen S., of Bad Axe; ten grandchildren; six great- grandchildren; two step-daughters, Judith Weeks and her husband, Charles, of Grand Blanc, Linda Bishop, of Livonia; one step-son, Robert Adams, Jr. and his wife, Barbara, of Caseville; and five step-grandchildren. Maurine Todd Powers Maurine Todd Powers, a long time resident of Bad Axe, passed away September 20, 2004, after a long illness. She was the wife of Arthur Powers and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Todd. The Powers had two daughters, Barbara Powers, of Lansing, and Virginia Powers, of Seattle, Washington; five grandchildren; and seven great- grandchildren. Rooney, 69, resident of Verona Township near Bad Axe, passed away Tuesday evening, September 28, 2004, at Covenant-Harrison Hospital in Saginaw. She was born May 31, 1935 in Flint, daughter of the late Wesley and Maude (Nicholas) Brown. Miss Patricia Brown and LeRoy Rooney were united in marriage on January 17, 1959 in Bad Axe. Patricia was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Bad Axe. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, reading, and spending time with her family, and was a graduate of Bad Axe High School. Mrs. Rooney was employed at Walbro Corporation, Cass City, for six years and at the Huron County Medical Care Facility, Bad Axe, as a nurse aide, for 17 years. She retired in 1994. Surviving are her husband, LeRoy, of Bad Axe; one son, Kenneth Rooney, of Auburn; one daughter, Barbara DeGrandt and her husband, Randall, of Bad Axe; two brothers, Tom Brown and his wife, Virginia, of Daytona Beach, Florida, Albert Brown and his wife, Ruth Ann, of Kingston; four grandchildren, Melissa Livingston and her husband, Dale, of Athol, Massachusetts, Jessica DeGrandt, of Curtis, Cynthia DeGrandt, of Bad Axe, and Rebecca DeGrandt, of Bad Axe; one great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Livingston; and several nieces and nephews. Dutcher, 69, of Pigeon, passed away Wednesday, September 29, 2004, at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor. She was born in Bay Port on November 4, 1934, daughter of the late Victor and Virginia (Hansen) Forman. Following her graduation in 1952 from Bay Port High School, she attended business school in Bay City. On July 21, 1957, she was united in marriage to Donald R. Dutcher in Bay Port. He survives her. Mrs. Dutcher worked for Pigeon Motor Sales for many years, and was office manager for 27 years at Dr. E. Wayne Miller, DVM. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and flower gardening, as well as singing with the Sweet Adelines. She especially loved her family and enjoyed her grandchildren. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Pigeon, where she currently served as a member of the trustees committee, sang in the choir, and was a former church treasurer. In addition to Donald, her husband of 47 years, her family included three children, Todd Dutcher and his wife, Muriel, of Pigeon, Kurt Dutcher and his wife, Denise, of Dexter, and Laura Armbruster, who passed away March 11, 1993; a son-in-law, David Armbruster and his wife, Debbie, of Pigeon; eight grandchildren, Adam, Brittany, Bryce, Alexandria, Zachary, Madeleine, Haley, and Jack; a brother, Ralph Forman and his wife, Judy, of Bay Port; a step-sister, Lana Hunter and her husband, Pat, of Coldwater; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her step-mother, Mary Turner-Forman. John Warner Lewis John Warner "Louie" Lewis, 63, of Detroit, passed away on Thursday, September 28, 2004, at his home. He was born on October 23, 1940 in Detroit. Mr. Lewis began working for his father in the family business, Lewis Tire, in Hazel Park, over 50 years ago. Mr. Lewis took over the business from his father in 1972 and operated it for the next 30 years. Mr. Lewis enjoyed spending time at his business and at home with his family and many friends and his long time dog, Blackie. He had a mischievous and fun-loving personality and loved playing with his four grandchildren. Mr. Lewis enjoyed playing pool and going to the Hazel Park Race Track. He also enjoyed watching Lions football games and tending to his garden. He enjoyed sitting outdoors at his home on his porch. Surviving are his children, John Lewis and his wife, Manu, of St. Clair Shores, and Paul C. Lewis, of Dallas, Texas; four grandchildren, Jeremy, Madison, Luke, and Joshua; mother, Barbara Lewis; sisters, Beverly Gage and her husband, Leon, of Grandville, Ohio, Margo Pittman, of Lake Orion; and nieces and nephews, Dan Pittman, Lisa Pittman, Denise Juilliard and her husband, Randy, Cathy Jones, Diana Ufert and her husband, Curtis, and Dave Gage and his wife, Sandy. He was preceded in death by his father, John William Lewis. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 2, 2004, at Hopcroft Funeral Home, Hazel Park. Visitation is from 2 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oakview Cemetery. Laurence Warren Laurence "Doc" Warren, 89, of Port Austin, passed away on Thursday, September 30, 2004, at Shelby Nursing Center, Shelby Township. He was born on November 21, 1914 in Detroit. Laurence was in the Armed Forces. "Doc" worked for Detroit Edison in accounts payable after the co-op program from Murray Wright. After retirement, he enjoyed time at his cottage in Port Austin. He was a loyal and loving brother and uncle. Survived by his loving brothers, W. Leslie and his wife, Gerry, Frank and his wife, Norma, and James and his wife, Arlene. "Uncle Doc" had many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister and brother-in-law, Marguerite Mouton and her husband, Frank; his brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and his wife, Bette. The funeral service will be at 6 p.m. on Saturday, October 2, 2004, at Sterling Heights Chapel of Bagnasco and Calcaterra Funeral Home, 13650 E. Fifteen Mile Road.
