Sunday, May 8, 2005 Elmer "Joe" Gehring Elmer "Joe" Gehring, 81, of Bad Axe, passed away Saturday, May 7, 2005, at Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe following an extended illness. He was born on March 8, 1924 in Harbor Beach, son of the late John and Cecelia (Rogers) Gehring. He married Grace Allan on January 15, 1955 in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. He had formerly been employed by Mueller Brass Company in Port Huron and by Buick in Flint. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the VFW. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and in the Marines during the Korean Conflict. He is survived by his wife, Grace, of Bad Axe; one son, John Gehring, of Davison; one grandson, Jason Gehring, of Royal Oak; one brother, Edward Gehring, Sr. and his wife, Marianne, of Harbor Beach; one sister, Marie Ryckman, of Port Huron; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his stepmother, Edith Zmich; one brother, John Gehring; two sisters, Evelyn Gehring and Elizabeth Dutcher. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 10, 2005, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Officiating will be Fr. James Carlson, pastor. Burial will be in Colfax Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the Kaufman Funeral Home in Bad Axe, and from 10 a.m. to the time of service on Tuesday at the church. A parish vigil service will be offered at 7:30 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be offered to Heartland Hospice. Keith L. McTaggart Keith L. McTaggart, 81, of Bad Axe, passed away on Saturday, April 30, 2005, at the Blake Medical Center in Bradenton, Florida following a short illness. He was born on July 6, 1923 in Bad Axe, son of the late Russell and Mabel (Kerr) McTaggart. He married Bertha Lutz on September 28, 1946. He served as an MP in the U.S. Army Air Corps, participating in the India and China Theaters during World War II. He was a 1941 Bad Axe High School graduate, a 1949 graduate of Michigan State University and long- time Spartan fan. He was in education for 35 years, teaching agriculture at Elkton High School, serving as high school counselor at Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port High School, and closing out his career as vocational education director of the Huron Intermediate School District. He was a member of the Bad Axe First Presbyterian Church, the Elkton Lions Club, and a lifelong resident of Huron County living on the McTaggart centennial farm. Keith and Bertha have spent the last 10 winters in Bradenton, Florida, enjoying the warm weather and their many friends. Keith enjoyed travel, camping trips, golfing, yard work, and taking kids of all ages on wagon rides around the farm. He and Bertha loved visiting and entertaining their family and many friends. He is survived by his wife, Bertha McTaggart, of Bad Axe; three daughters, Julee McTaggart and Marc Veneroso, of Vancouver, Washington, Janice Kanters and her husband, Rudi, of Rotterdam, The Netherlands, Melinda Stone and her husband, David, of Birmingham; one son, Jim McTaggart and his wife, Lisa, of Elm Grove, Wisconsin; three granddaughters; and four grandsons. A celebration of life memorial service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. on July 30, 2005, at the Bad Axe First Presbyterian Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Jan G. Dykshoorn, pastor, and retired pastor and family friend, The Rev. Don Remillard, of Sterling Heights. A visitation period will be conducted with the family in the church activity hall immediately following the services. John Bernard "Bun" Ross Bernard "Bun" Ross, 89, of Cass City, died Thursday, May 5, 2005, in the Tuscola County Medical Care Facility after a short illness. He was born August 29, 1915 at home in Cass City to John and Bridget (McCormick) Ross. He married Loretta B. Dillon on September 28, 1940 in St. Agatha Catholic Church, Gagetown. Bun graduated from Cass City High School in 1933. He then attended Ferris Institute, now Ferris State University, graduating with a bachelor's degree in business administration. He owned the Federated Store for 41 years, retiring in 1982. Bun was one of 10 original investors in the Cass City Industrial Development Corporation, which was responsible for attracting Walbro to Cass City. He was a charter member of the Chamber of Commerce. He served on its board of directors four years and was president for one year. Bun served on the village council from 1967 through 1973. He also served on the zoning board for 12 years. He also was a member of the Gavel Club, working on many projects including making toys for Christmas for the auction for the hospital fund. Bun was a member of St. Pancratius Catholic Church for 64 years and served as an usher there for nearly as many years. He enjoyed golf and loved his grandchildren. Bun is survived by his wife, Loretta; children, Shirley Law and her husband, Delbert, of Whitmore Lake, Gerald B. Ross, of Novi, Richard Ross, S.J., of Chicago, Robert Ross and his wife, Patti, of Ventura, California, Sharon Delamarter and her husband, Dan, of Cass City, and Mary Thacker and her husband, Jack, of Belleville; grandchildren, Elizabeth Law, Tyler Ross, Amanda Ross, Jessica Ross, Erica Delamarter, Danielle Delamarter, Cody Ross, Jared Thacker, Alex Ross, Dillon Ross, Zachary Thacker and Jonas Thacker; sisters, Florence London, Helen Jackson and her husband, Bill, Kathleen Steeh and her husband, Larry, and Frances Flynn and her husband, John; brothers, Edward Ross and his wife, Jackie, and Fred Ross and his wife, Shirley; and many nieces and nephews. Suomi, 85, of Bad Axe, passed away Thursday, May 5, 2005, at Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe. Mr. Suomi was born May 9, 1919 in Ishpeming. He was the son of the late Dan and Mary Suomi. He was united in marriage to Helen Seilo on October 12, 1946. He graduated from Rock High School and was a graduate of Michigan State University. He was employed by the State of Michigan as a conservation officer early in his career in the Upper Peninsula. He later worked in Huron and Sanilac counties as a Michigan state parole and probation agent. He retired in 1978. Mr. Suomi was a resident of Bad Axe since 1955 and attended Cross Lutheran Church in Pigeon. He served in the United States Air Corps in counter-intelligence during World War II. Mr. Suomi was a life member of the Verona-Huron Masonic Lodge #365 F&AM Bad Axe. Arnold is survived by his wife of 58 years, Helen; one son, Daniel Suomi and his wife, Regina, of Olympia, Washington; and one daughter, Kathleen Johnson and her husband, Paul, of Seattle. Cremation has taken place. No services will be conducted, but visitation will occur from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, May 9, 2005, at the MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe. A Masonic memorial service will follow. Monday, May 9, 2005 Newell S. Wightman Newell S. Wightman, 93, resident of Country Bay Village died Saturday, May 7, 2005, at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon. Mr. Wightman was born September 2, 1911 in Caseville. He was the son of the late Willard and Katherine (Fisher) Wightman. Newell and Miss Ruth Elizabeth Osborne were united in marriage on February 29, 1936 in Chandler Township. Mrs. Wightman preceded her husband in death on November 17, 1982. Mr. Wightman later was united in marriage to Clara (Gotts) Faupel on July 27, 1985 at the Elkton Missionary Church. Newell was an active member of the Elkton Missionary Church. He made his home in Chandler Township, where he farmed for many years. He enjoyed the outdoors, ice fishing, riding his motorcycle and repairing small engines. He loved and enjoyed being with his grandchildren, was an avid reader especially of poetry and also wrote a number of poems. He is survived by his wife, Clara; one daughter, Ann Everett and her husband, Carl, of Clarkston; two grandchildren, Christopher and his wife, Dr. Kari Everett, of Oxford, and Juli Nimer and her husband, Steve, of Walled Lake; five great-grandchildren, Keegan, Cassidy, Annie, Devon, and Caleb; one brother, Bradley Wightman, of Alma; three step-sons, Dr. D. William Faupel and his wife, Bonnie, of Washington D.C., Dr. Charles Faupel and his wife, Martha, of Auburn, Alabama, and Donald Faupel and his wife, Barbara, of Bad Axe; five step-grandchildren, Jennifer E. Ewing and her husband, Chad, Alison Faupel and her husband, Joey Fones, Christina Faupel, David Faupel, and Kevin Faupel; one step-brother-in-law, William Gotts and his wife, Donna, of Caseville; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Wightman is preceded in death by his brothers, Lloyd, Lewis George, and Edward; and one sister, Virginia Hoffman. Clements Miller Clements Miller, 93, of Parisville and Fraser, passed away on Saturday, May 7, 2005, at his daughter's residence under hospice care. Tuesday, May 10, 2005 Pauline Harriet Geddes Pauline Harriet (Polly) Geddes, 80, of Ann Arbor died Monday, May 9, 2005, of renal failure at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ypsilanti. She was born August 15, 1924 in Detroit, the daughter of Lewis O. and Clara C. (Kline) Witherby. She spent many summers growing up in Caseville on her grandparents' farm. She graduated from high school in 1942 and was married on August 29, 1942 to Charles W. Geddes of Ann Arbor. He preceded her in death on December 1, 1993. Polly worked as a homemaker, raising six children and helping out on the dairy farm, which has been in the family since 1827. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and traveling. She was very involved with her family and her church, Ann Arbor House of Worship. Polly is survived by her children: Chuck Geddes and his wife, Sheri, of Lexington, Tennessee, Hannah Wright and her husband, Bill, of Parma, Jack Geddes and his wife, Becky, of Ann Arbor, Paul Geddes and his wife, Diane, of Oregon, Illinois, Marti Soenen and her husband, Dan, of Rapid City, and Joe Geddes, of Ann Arbor; 15 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, David Witherby and his wife, Judy, of Kimberling, Missouri, and Michael Witherby and his wife, Melda, of Jacksonville, Alabama; one sister, Patricia (Patsy) Palisano, of Lockport, New York; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister, Suzanne. Edna Mae Damm Yackle Edna Mae Damm Yackle, 88, of Pigeon, passed away Sunday, May 8, 2005, at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon. She was born in Pigeon on October 18, 1916, daughter of the late Rudolph and Lena (Albrecht) Born and was united in marriage to Earl O. Damm on December 5, 1934. He died February 22, 1987. She married Carl Yackle on May 5, 1990 and he died July 2, 1996. Mrs. Yackle was a homemaker throughout her lifetime, enjoying gardening, reading, and writing poetry, as well as picking strawberries, canning, and farming along with her husband, Earl. She was a former Farm Bureau member. She was a member of the Pigeon First United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women of the church. She is survived by a sister, Dorothy Rehberg, of Eastpointe; a brother, Clarence Born, of Pigeon; and several nieces and nephews. She also is survived by her late husband Carl's children. She was preceded in death by five sisters, Martha Meyforth, Mabel Hacker, Alvina Lentner, Violet Diebel, and Anna Heirer; and two brothers, Henry and Charles Born. He was born on March 20, 1927 in Tyre to the late Alexander and Margaret (Trudeau) McCarthy. He married Dorothy Peters on June 18, 1944 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Argyle. She preceded him in death on October 10, 2001. Patrick was a 1944 graduate of Ubly High School. He served in the U.S. Army. He was a former member of the Sandusky Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the Caro Thumb Area Old Engine and Tractor Association. He was a member of a VFW Association. He was co-owner for many years of McCarty Brothers Moving and McCarty Brothers Saw Mill. He was an owner operator and former owner of M.G. Trucking. He liked tractors, traveling, and playing cards. He loved to play and listen to music. Patrick had a great sense of humor and was very appreciative of his family and friends. Patrick is survived by three sons, Gregory McCarty and his wife, JoAnn, of Davison, Michael McCarty and his wife, Glorie, of Ubly, Timothy McCarty and his wife, Karen, of Kent; two daughters, Angela Wasierski and her husband, Richard, of Conklin, Theresa Glaza and her husband, Gary, of Snover; one daughter-in-law, Kim Allis and her husband, John, of Davison; 22 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; special friend, Iva Rockwell, of Cass City; one sister-in-law, Mabel McCarty, of Lake Orion. Harold Dennis Whittaker Harold Dennis Whittaker, 75, of Cass City, passed away Monday, May 9, 2005, at Hills and Dales General Hospital in Cass City. Harold was born May 21, 1929 in Lamotte Township, the son of the late Freeman and Janet (Garbett) Whittaker. On June 9, 1951, he married Ethel Polmounter in Clio. Harold was self-employed as a lumberman having owned Harold Whittaker Saw Mill for 42 years. He was a former Sunday school superintendent, teacher, deacon and a charter member of Cass City Missionary Church and enjoyed watching sports and played in a softball league. Harold is survived by his wife, Ethel; children, Sherry Broeker and her husband, Daniel, of Arizona, and Larry Whittaker and his wife, Michelle, of Cass City; two brothers, Gerald Whittaker and his wife, Ruth, and Wayne Whittaker and his wife, Evelyn, both of Cass City; one sister, Leona Innes and her husband, Marvin, of Decker; seven grandchildren; and four great- grandchildren. He was predeceased by siblings, Cecile, Evelyn, Vernon, Erwin, Ralph, Melvin and baby, Allen. Arnold, 51, of Sebewaing, died Thursday morning, May 12, 2005, at his home following a six-month illness. He was born July 18, 1953 in Bay City, son of Gertrude (Schultz) Arnold and the late Robert Arnold. He was united in marriage to Debbie M. Koepf on May 21, 1977 in Unionville. Lynn had been employed by General Motors Powertrain in Bay City for 27 years. He was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Unionville; was past president, and former Sunday school teacher and superintendent. He was a member of Bay Area Runners Club, was a musician and enjoyed basketball. Surviving besides his wife, Debbie, are four sons, Robert Arnold and Jonathon Arnold, both of San Diego, California, Charles Arnold and his wife, Deana, of Katy, Texas, and Adam Arnold, at home; his mother, Gertrude Arnold, of Unionville; three brothers and one sister, Byron Arnold and his wife, Janice, of Unionville, Vernon Arnold, of Bay City, Wayne Arnold and his wife, Jennifer, of Caro, June Simon and her husband, John, of Portland; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. Etta Mae Auten Etta Mae Auten, 89, of Cass City, died Thursday, May 12, 2005, at Northwood Meadows Medical Care Unit after a short illness. She was born February 2, 1916 at home in Novesta Township to John R. and Hattie (Ashby) Collins. She married Kenneth J. Auten on March 19, 1934 in Caro. He died December 7, 1954. Etta worked for Owendale Industries beginning in the mid 1940s for about 10 years. She then worked for Cass City Manufacturing and General Cable. Etta retired from General Cable in 1973 after more than 13 years. She loved to sew and do needlework. Her flower gardens were second to none. Etta was a member of the Cass City United Methodist Church. Etta is survived by her children, Kathleen Warner, of Vassar, and Gerald Auten and his wife, Donna, of Cass City; grandchildren, Suzanne Frazier, Mark Warner, Donald Warner and his wife, Regina, David Warner and his wife, ElizaBeth, Darlene Bedford and her husband, Riggs, Jul Ann Kuenzli and her husband, Ronald, Colleen Sweeney and her husband, Terry, and Geraldine Auten; great-grandchildren, Megan, Brett, Ellie, Nathalie, Erin-Shea, Andrea, Holly, Jennifer Rebecca, Heather, Emily, and Katelyn; Etta's first great-great-grandchild is due any day; sister-in-law, Mary Collins, of North Branch; and nieces and nephews. Born on August 20, 1919 in Ruth, he was the son of the late Julius and Frances (Makowski) Klebba. Frank was united in marriage to Viola Grates on January 16, 1943 at Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach. He was formerly employed by Malloy Manufacturing of Fraser and former owner of the Halfway Tavern-Engles Corner. He was a member of Our Lady of Lake Huron and Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Viola, of Harbor Beach; three daughters, Delphine Peplinski and her husband, Virgil, of Ruth, Frances Holdwick, of Bad Axe, and Elizabeth Booms and her husband, Lloyd, of Ubly; two sons, Jack Klebba and his wife, Ricky, of Harbor Beach, and Ronald Klebba and his wife, Nadine, of Harbor Beach; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one sister, Frances Briolat, of Cass City; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Martin, Joseph and John Klebba. Elsie Mabel Travis Elsie "Sally" Mabel Travis, 85, of Bad Axe, passed away on Wednesday, May 11, 2005, at Hills and Dales Hospital in Cass City. She was born February 24, 1920 in Detroit to the late George and Mabel (Flagg) Dew. Elsie was united in marriage to the late John Robert Travis. Mrs. Travis was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was a homemaker and enjoyed visiting with family and friends. Elsie loved animals and especially enjoyed her dog "Rusty". She is survived by her sons, Robert Travis and his wife, Jackie, of Shelby Township, and Kenneth Travis and his wife, Lynne, of Mayville; ten grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Violet Kollor, of Indiana. Services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe. Officiating will be the Rev. Peter Crawford, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Elkton. Burial will be in the Colfax Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today and from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday at the MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Axe. Memorials may be offered to the Family Discretionary Fund or the donor's choice. Charles Thuemmel Jr. Charles Thuemmel Jr., 78, of Port Austin, died Friday morning, May 13, 2005, at Tendercare Nursing Center in Cass City.
