Call, 93, of Harbor Beach, passed away on Friday, January 7, 2005, in Courtney Manor Nursing Center in Bad Axe where she had been a resident since November 2002. She was the only child of Columbus and Florence (Cooper) _________ born in Grand Ledge on June 7, 1911. On November 5 1931, she married Kenneth Call who was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard in Sault Ste. Marie. They spent the next 25 years living near life-saving stations on the Great Lakes. He preceded her in death on December 6, 1976. Myrtle was a life member of the Order of Eastern Star of Harbor Beach and Ubly and was the past Matron, life member and past president of the American Legion Auxiliary and was a past District President of the Michigan American Legion, and a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Bad Axe. She enjoyed writing true stories of her life along Lake Superior in the 1930s and enjoyed playing the piano and playing solitaire. The couple had two children, Jo Anne Will and her husband, Keith, of Harbor Beach, and Larry Jay Call and his wife, Karen, of Kalamazoo. She had six grandchildren, Wayne Dickinson, of Marquardt, Kelly Dickinson, of Ingalls Quilcine, Washington, Merrie Dickinson, of Santa Rosa, California, Christopher, Brian and Danielle Call, of Kalamazoo; and seven great grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 10, 2005, at the Ramsey Funeral Home, Harbor Beach, with the Rev. Elsa Pressentin, pastor of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, officiating. Burial will be in the New River Cemetery, Huron City. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today, and from 10 a.m. until the service time on Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the St. Paul's Church, Courtney Manor, or the Salvation Army. Mary B. Hoffman Mary B. Hoffman, 99, of Pigeon, passed away Thursday, January 6, 2005, at the Huron Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. She was born in Chappel, Nebraska on November 16, 1905, daughter of the late Henry and Maggie (Ernst) Kuhns. She was united in marriage to John W. Hoffman in Thurman, Colorado in 1925. He preceded her in death in 1969, and Mrs. Hoffman moved to Huron County to be near her daughters. Mrs. Hoffman was a homemaker throughout her lifetime, enjoying sewing, quilting, and crocheting. She was a member of the Michigan Avenue Mennonite Church in Pigeon as well as the Michigan Avenue Mennonite Friendship Circle. She is survived by three daughters, Helen Ruby and her husband, Joe, of Pigeon, Ethel Gunden and her husband, John, and Alice Albrecht and her husband, Lyle, both of Bay Port; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lucille Kemph, of Kalona, Iowa, and Laura Miller, of Mount Pleasant, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Ida Johnson; five brothers, Glen, John, Ervin, Lawrence and Delmar; and two sisters, Velma Hoffman and Stella Kuhns. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 10, 2005, at the Michigan Avenue Mennonite Church, Pigeon, with the Rev. Scot Wilson, pastor, officiating. Schultz, 60, of Otisville, passed away on Thursday, January 6, 2005, at the University of Michigan Medical Center. Arlene was born in Parisville on February 27, 1944, daughter of Alfred and Evelyn (Glaza) Lemanski. She was employed by Rite Aid Pharmacy in Otisville. Arlene is survived by her husband, Edward Schultz; three children, Deanna Beyer, and her husband, Jeffrey, Daniel Kociba and his wife, Cheryl, Denise Stewart and special friend, Matthew Scrase; seven grandchildren; a brother, Ronald Lemanski and his wife, Linda, of Mauldin, South Carolina; sisters, Mary Ann Wrubel and her husband, Kenneth, of Minden City, Rita Osentoski and her husband Jim, of Ubly, Lorraine Barnes and her husband, James, of Imlay City; several nieces and nephews; a step-father, George Lemanski, of Bad Axe; sister-in-laws, Janet Elbers and her husband, Ed, Margaret Cook, Loretta Hoose and her husband, Bill; brother-in-law ,Ronald Schultz and his wife, Kaye. Monday, January 10, 2005 Phyllis (Christenson) Alvord Phyllis (Christenson) Alvord, 91, of Harbor Beach and formerly of Port Huron, went to her eternal resting place on Saturday, January 8, 2005, at the long term care unit of Harbor Beach Community Hospital. Phyllis married Lewis F. Christenson on February 17, 1934 in Port Huron. He preceded her in death on May 22, 1970. She married Joseph Alvord on July 20, 1972 in Ohio. He preceded her in death on March 23, 1992. She was a former employee of the JC Penney and Winkelman stores in Port Huron. She is survived by a daughter, Joyce Schmalz and her husband, Richard, of Harbor Beach; a son, Mark Christenson and his wife, Ann, of Port Huron; grandchildren, Beth Welker and her husband, Alfred, of Harbor Beach, Paul Schmalz and his wife, Theresa, of Valley View, Ohio, Michael Schmaltz and his wife, Sharon, of Harbor Beach, Daniel Schmalz, of Aiken, South Carolina, Amy Moran and her husband, Tom, of Port Huron; great- grandchildren, Jennifer and Andrew Schmalz, of Ohio, Zachary and Gabe Martinez, of Harbor Beach, and Jade and Leah Schmalz, of South Carolina. Joy Anthony Joy Anthony, 78, of Ubly, died Sunday, January 9, 2005, in Marlette Hospice Residence. She was born December 24, 1926 in Flint to Archie T. and Leita M. (LeMay) Solman. She married James E. Anthony on October 30, 1948 in Pontiac. He died March 1, 1973. Joy worked as a real estate salesperson for over 55 years, most recently for Osentoski Realty in Bad Axe. Joy and James built Wildwood Farms Restaurant in 1972. She was a former member of the Cass City Zonta Club and a current member of the Ubly Library Board. Joy loved to travel. She was a member of the Nomad Travel Club. She had traveled around the world twice. Joy also took part in several Windjammer trips. Joy is survived by her sons, Kim Anthony and his wife, Barbara, of Ubly, Kevin Anthony and his wife, Jean, of Ubly; grandchildren, Matthew Anthony and his wife, Christine, Kathryn Khoury and her husband, Joseph, Nicholas Anthony, Michelle Anthony, Kristopher Anthony; great-granddaughter, Laci Renae Anthony. She was preceded in death by her brother, Lee Solman. Braun Mrs. Esther M. Braun, 80, of Harbor Beach, passed away Saturday, January 8, 2005, at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. She was born February 17, 1924 in Harbor Beach to the late Edward and Rose (Lorkowski) Roggenbuck. She married Anthony Braun on September 15, 1945 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Helena. He preceded her in death on April 19, 1961. She married Norman Braun on January 20, 1962 at St. Anthony's in Helena. He preceded her in death on March 22, 1986. Esther was a graduate of a country school. She was a member of Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach since 1962. She was a member of the Harbor Beach VFW Auxiliary #9344. She enjoyed gardening, quilting, cards, and visiting with family and friends. Lipiec, 86, of Caseville, died Sunday, January 9, 2005, in her home. She was born February 20, 1918 in Lackawana, New York. Genevieve married Anthony W. Lipiec, Sr. on March 19, 1942 in Detroit. They moved from Detroit to Caseville in 1974. She was a retired seamstress for the Chrysler Corporation. She was a charter member of the Caseville Eagles Auxiliary, a member of St. Roch Catholic Church, St. Roch Altar Society, American Legion Seniors, and the Caseville Eagles REACT. Genevieve is survived by her son, Anthony W., Jr., of Caseville, and her daughters, Barbara Lerchenfeld, of Warren, Gwen Ploe, of Caseville; grandchildren, Michael Weber, Michele Weber and her husband, Mike, Christy Grumelot and her husband, Carey, Karl Lerchenfeld, Stacy Lerchenfeld, Brandy Ploe, and Robyn Fritz and her husband, Brian; great-grandchildren, Ariel, Joe, Jessica, Kaleb, Katy Lynn, Dalton, Jesse, Cody, and Logan. Words of condolences can be left at www.cfcCaseville.com Richard Duerr Purdy Richard "Dick" Duerr Purdy, 72, of Harbor Beach, went to be with his Lord on Saturday, January 8, 2005, at his home under Hospice care. He was born in Harbor Beach on November 5, 1932 to the late Theron and Gladys (Duerr) Purdy. Dick was united in marriage to Shirley A. Liedke on October 11, 1952, and they raised five daughters in a home he built by the lake. He was a life long resident of the Harbor Beach area. After graduating from Harbor Beach High School in 1951, he served four years in the U.S. Coast Guard. Most of that time was spent on the cutter Mackinaw. Before leaving for service, Dick was employed by Huron Milling Company, which later became Hercules, Inc. His position was open for him when he returned from military service and he retired as a maintenance supervisor from Hercules Inc. in 1990, fulfilling 40 years of service. Eight years of his retirement was spent as chief dishwasher at his daughter's business, Cheryl's Cakes and Catering. A wonderful and loving husband and father, he was also an avid golfer and hunter. He enjoyed woodworking, photography, training and raising labrador retrievers, playing cards and shooting pool. Playing cribbage online and chatting with his Yahoo friends was a favorite pastime along with helping his family with all their projects. Dick was a member of the American Legion Post 197. He is survived by his wife, Shirley, of Harbor Beach; five daughters, Julie Arndt and her husband, Gary, of Harbor Beach, Cindy Purdy and her husband, Joe Prewozniak, of Harbor Beach, Cheryl Pawloski and her husband, Raymond, of Harbor Beach, Kathy Miller and her husband, Bill, of Croswell, and Debra Woody and her husband, Lee, of Burlington, Kentucky; 13 grandchildren, Tony Burkhard and his wife, Renee, Lea (Burkhard) Soderlind and her husband, Erik, Shannon Russell, Erica Russell, Christina Siedlecki, Shayla Siedlecki, Hunter Pawloski, Billie Miller, Jessica Miller, Alexandra Miller, Dilan Woody, and twins Camryn and Jordan Woody; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Rice, 72, of Sand Point, passed away Sunday, January 9, 2005, at Scheurer Hospital Long Term Care Unit in Pigeon. She was born July 26, 1932 in Detroit, daughter of the late Herbert and Iva Price. Carol was a graduate of Denby High School in Detroit. She was united in marriage to William Rice on February 11, 1956 at Calvin United Presbyterian Church in Detroit. They moved permanently to Sand Point in 1986. Surviving are her husband, Bill, of Sand Point; children, Gilbert Rice and his wife, Laura, of Elida, Ohio, Robert Rice, of Washington, Michigan, Dawn Miller and her husband, James, of Rochester; five grandchildren, William and Nicole Rice, Jennifer, Sydney and Andrew Miller; also one brother, Herbert Price. Donald Duane Ziehm Donald Duane Ziehm, 72, of Owendale, died Monday, January 10, 2005, at his home following a 10-year illness. He was born December 22, 1932 in Brookfield Township, son of the late Floyd and Madeline (Good) Ziehm. He was married to Jeannine D. Faust, May 8, 1954 in Owendale. Duane was a longtime farmer in the Owendale area until 1996. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Linkville, served as an elder and coached fifth and sixth grade basketball at the Owendale-Gagetown High School. He also served on the Owendale-Gagetown Board of Education for four years and was a former member of the Owendale Lions Club. He worked as a groundskeeper at the Huron County Fair from 1997 to 2004. Engel John F. Engel, 84, of Hume Township, passed away Monday, January 10, 2005, at Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe. He was born June 14, 1920 to the late August and Emma (Kraase) Engel in Bad Axe. John was united in marriage to Edna Townley on October 22, 1949 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Kinde. They enjoyed 55 years of marriage together. He was a lifelong resident of the Kinde area. John was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church where he served on the finance committee and was a member of the St. Peter's Men's Club. He also was active in the Good Sam's Camping Club, the Port Hope Retiree's Club and the Thumb Sportsmen Club. John, at one time farmed, drove a school bus, was a mechanic for Frank Minnick, worked at the Bad Axe and Port Austin elevator, Tate Implement and McDonald's Food and Family Center. He is survived by his wife, Edna; two daughters, Darlene Rinnert and her special friend, Tom Carlen, of Shelby Township, and Marsha Maschke and her husband, Charles, of Port Hope; one son, Larry Engel and his wife, Margaret, of Hemlock; seven grandchildren, Erik and Colleen Rinnert, of Mount Clemens, Holly Rinnert, of Clinton Township, Jason Maschke, of Port Hope, Jeremy and Shelia Maschke, of Caseville, Jonathan Maschke, of Port Hope, Angela Engel, of Hemlock, and her fiancee, Jason Oliver, of Saginaw, and Kelly Engel, of Hemlock; three great-grandchildren, Dakota Eckert, Austin Rinnert, and Kathleen Rose Maschke; one brother, Herbert Engel and his wife, LaDona, of Bad Axe. Thursday, January 13, 2005 – No obituaries reported Friday, January 14, 2005 Alexander Robert Fligger Alexander Robert Fligger, 78, of Bad Axe, passed away Thursday, January 13, 2005, at his residence of an apparent heart attack. He was born September 17, 1926 in Detroit to the late Alexander and Virginia (Grifka) Fligger. He never married. He attended the Martin Country School in Verona and went on to graduate from Ubly High School in 1944. He served in the U.S. Army from January 1946 to April 1947. He had been employed at Pontiac Motors for 34 years when he retired in 1982. He was a member of the Bad Axe Senior Citizens Group and the GM Retirees Group. He loved to play cards, read, and do crossword puzzles. Alexander is survived by two sisters, Marie Mroczek and her husband, Edward, of Kinde, Bernadine Janowiak and her husband, Herbert, of Bad Axe; four brothers, Marvin Fligger and his wife, Cindy, of Clarkston, Ralph Fligger of Bad Axe, James Fligger, of Bad Axe, John Fligger and his wife, Sandy, of Filion. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Elmer Fligger, in 1978. Pionk, 74, of Ubly, passed away Thursday, January 13, 2005, at his residence under hospice care. He was born September 8, 1930 in Smith Corners to the late John and Frances (Gosdzinski) Pionk. He married Marie Evelyn Shemka on May 1, 1954 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Parisville. Archie attended the Kelly Country School. In his younger days, he was an accomplished baseball/softball player. He was a drummer for 20 years with the band "The Polka Chips". He retired in 1997 after 43 years as a machine repairman for Active Industries. He was a parishioner at St. John Catholic Church in Ubly for 45 years. Archie enjoyed woodworking, rug weaving, gardening, and playing his accordion for his family. He also was an avid hunter. Archie is survived by his wife, Marie, of Ubly; two sons, Marvin Pionk and his wife, Barbara, of Bad Axe, Michael Pionk and his wife, Donna, of Hermitage, Tennessee; five grandchildren, Matthew and Kimberly Pionk, of Bad Axe, Hayley, Luke, and Julia Pionk, of Hermitage, Tennessee; two sisters, Susie Peruski and Rose Lemanski, both of Bad Axe; one brother, James Pionk, of Bad Axe; three sisters-in-law, Beatrice Osantoski and her husband, Martin, of Bad Axe, Louise Pionk, of Ubly, Jeanette Lemanski, of Madison Heights; and one brother-in-law, LaVerne Shemka and his wife, Mary, of Port Hope. Archie was preceded in death by three sisters, Lucy Osentoski, Anna Susalla, and Selma Grifka; and six brothers, Stanley, Sylvester, John, Clarence, Elmer, and Ignatz Pionk. Russell, 85, of Summerdale, Alabama, passed away on Monday, January 3, 2005. He was born June 29, 1919 in Sikeston, Missouri. He retired from Ford Motor Company and moved to Harbor Beach in 1971. Russell, Jr. and his wife, Nancy, of Sterling Heights, William Russell and his wife, Karol, of Bad Axe, Howard Russell and his wife, Gloria, of Harbor Beach, Tillie Morrow and her husband, Martin, of Bruce Township, and Harriet Russell, of Harbor Beach; dear family friend, Brenda Condo; 17 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted on Sunday, January 9, 2005, in Alabama. A family memorial service will be conducted on Sunday, January 16, 2005. Edward Drews Edward Drews, 32, of Port Hope, passed away on Thursday, January 13, 2005, at Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe, following an apparent heart attack. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, January 17, 2005, at Kaufman Funeral Home in Bad Axe. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, from 1 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, and from 9 a.m. until the time of service at 10 a.m. on Monday at the funeral home.
